One more pup, and we've got twice the fun!!!!!
posted on 03 Jun 2009In 1996's "101 Dalmatians," Cruella De Vil was arrested by the London Metropolitain Police (God bless them) for attempting to steal and murder 101 puppies - dalmatians. All covered in mud and hay, she spent the next 4 years in the "tin can." Now, 4 years later, she, unfortunately, was released from the jail. I say, that's about 28 years - in dog years!!!!!So, in 2000, Disney decided to release a sequel to the successful live-action version of the classic film and it is hereby dubbed "102 Dalmatians." In it, there is a 102nd dalmatian added to the family (Oddball is the name, I think; I should know this since this was just shown on TV recently), and the puppy had no spots!!!!! Also, while Cruella (again played by Glenn Close) has escaped again, she wanted a bigger, better coat - made once again out of the puppies!!!!!I especially liked the theme song - I'm sure everybody loves the "Atomic Dog" song from the 70s or so. And now, we hear a bit of it in this movie!!!!!"102 Dalmatians" is such a great film that I keep on wondering - WHEN WILL THERE BE A "103 DALMATIANS?????" LOL10 stars
Not a spot of originiality on this dalmatian.
posted on 14 Apr 2009On a rating scale of 0 to 100, I give "102 Dalmatians" a 48.Be aware this review may contain small spoilers, I briefly wrote what happened in the finale. Is making a sequel out of a remake a good idea? In 102 Dalmatians' case, no it isn't. This is not a terrible film, but it is not a good one either. I actually expected this movie to be worse than it's predecessor, but, hey, it wasn't. It was better. But, that is not even a compliment. It would be pretty easy to beat the standards of 101 Dalmatians, so is this film anything special? No, no, no!After a spot of therapy Cruella De Vil (Glenn Close) is released from prison a changed woman. Devoted to dogs and good causes, she is delighted that Chloe (Alice Evans), her parole officer, has a Dalmatian family and connections with a dog charity. But the sound of Big Ben can reverse the treatment so it is only a matter of time before Ms De Vil is back to her incredibly ghastly ways, using her new-found connections with Chloe and friends.Glenn Close is superb in her role of Cruella, that is one very good about the movie, which earns it a higher rating than it otherwise would've got. Add to that a cool theme song and a hilarious finale in which Cruella gets caked, and you may have a good movie. But, what about the originality? You can search this film and find nothing new, nothing much has changed from the first film. And what about the laughs? There aren't any of them until the end, and all the way until the finale, the film overflows with unfunny 'gags' that'll have the audience snoring. Also, no points to Ioan Gruffudd, who wears shorts through the entire film and looked to me like a school boy than a grown adult.102 Dalmatians earns very, very high on the snooze factor. But, what about the entertainment factor? It hardly makes it to the score I've given it in this review.
Fantastic but 101 is better i think
posted on 12 Jan 2009I really like 101 Dalmations when it came out in 1996, now 5 years later i went to see 102 dalmations in 2001, i thought it was fantastic but i think 101 is better because i think it's more funnier, more humor, and also that movie was based on the same story as the cartoon version (one hundred and one dalmations (1961) i wonder if there are plans for 103 Dalmations. I hope there is, maybe yes, maybe no, all of us dalmation fans will have to find out if there is going to be 103 dalmations in the future.
Another buzz-cut from the Disney Regime
posted on 04 Oct 2008102 Dalmations isn't as good as the first (if you can call the first one any good), despite Ok performances by Glenn Close and Gerard Deardieu. Story is original (not a remake, I'll give it that), but it lacks a core, even if it is a kids movie. I guess it's a good kids movie, but unlike the Rugrats or especially the Gricnh, that's it's only lock in. Eric Idle brings very little as the voice of a parrot. C+
Character Engineering
posted on 30 Jul 2008Disney has the world's most advanced character lab. That's what these kinds of movies depend on. What we see are the broad strokes, but what's more interesting are all the little touches that are added based on the science of discovery through tests. It all revolves around the notion of the wheels of justice. So the mechanical ticks of the character mesh with the John Hughes-like mechanical contraption she gets caught up in at the end. And that mirrors the mechanical way that all this is derived and the mechanical reaction we unwittingly intend for our children to have when watching.Wish he would have used Molly Ringwald.Ted's Evaluation -- 1 of 3: You can find something better to do with this part of your life.
An entertaining doggy film - with stuff for everyone!
posted on 30 Jun 2008Arguably this is a very good "sequel", better than the first live action film 101 Dalmatians. It has good dogs, good actors, good jokes and all right slapstick! Cruella DeVil, who has had some rather major therapy, is now a lover of dogs and very kind to them. Many, including Chloe Simon, owner of one of the dogs that Cruella once tried to kill, do not believe this. Others, like Kevin Shepherd (owner of 2nd Chance Dog Shelter) believe that she has changed. Meanwhile, Dipstick, with his mate, have given birth to three cute dalmatian puppies! Little Dipper, Domino and Oddball...Starring Eric Idle as Waddlesworth (the hilarious macaw), Glenn Close as Cruella herself and Gerard Depardieu as Le Pelt (another baddie, the name should give a clue), this is a good family film with excitement and lots more!! One downfall of this film is that is has a lot of painful slapstick, but not quite as excessive as the last film. This is also funnier than the last film.Enjoy "102 Dalmatians"! :-)
102 paws up
posted on 06 Jun 2008I knew "102 Dalmations" would become one of my favorite films because it was filled with dogs. My love for dogs attracted me to the film and I wasn't disappointed in the result of this movie."102 Dalmations" was simply one of the smartest and funniest films I have seen all year. The one thing I found to be so cool was the director wouldn't let up on the comedy. There was not a moment that went by that I didn't laugh. I'm so glad I saw this film because it allowed me to forget the outside world and let me relax with my popcorn and soda pop.Glenn Close has done another incredible job portraying Cruella De Ville. Her performance was so incredible that she made me mad everytime she did something evil to one of the dalmations; when this happens, you know you have a good actress on your hands. Kudos to newcomers Ioan Grufford and Alice Evans as they pull off performances, which make them look like veterans. There performances were so great I could mistake them for naturals. These two have a lot to offer and are here to stay. "102 Dalmations" is such a delightfully light-hearted comedy that will warm your hearts and spur you into action at the same time.
Not as good as 101
posted on 19 May 2008This movie lacked of fun. I was expecting something similar to the first one, may be a repeat of the first. I did but the first one was funnier. Parts of the movies were entertaining but other parts were boring. Overall the movie will be forgotten easily. I rated it 6.
A dog of a dog movie
posted on 05 Dec 2007A sequel to (actually a remake of) Disney's 1996 live-action remake of 101 Dalmations. Cruella deVil (Glenn Close) is released from prison after being "cured" of her obsession with fur by a psychologist named Dr. Pavlov (ugh!). But the "cure" is broken when Cruella hears the toll of Big Ben, and she once again goes on a mad quest to make herself the perfect coat out of dalmation hides. This movie is bad on so many levels, starting with the fact that it's a "Thanksgiving family schlock" movie designed to suck every last available dime out of the Disney marketing machine. Glenn Close over-over-over-over-acts as Cruella. With all that she had to put up with in this movie -- the lame script, the endless makeup, getting baked in a cake at the end -- I hope they gave her an extremely-large paycheck.(Speaking of which, where in the world are you going to find a fur coat factory, a bakery with a Rube Goldberg assembly line, and a candlelight restaurant all located within the same building -- as you do in the climax of this film?) Of course, the real stars of the movie are supposed to be the dogs. They serve as the "Macaulay Culkin's" of this movie, pulling all the stupid "Home Alone" gags on the villains. (Biting them in the crotch, running over their hands with luggage carts, squirting them with icing, etc., etc., etc., ad nauseum.) I have to admit, the dogs were fairly good actors -- much better than the humans.Gerard Depardieu is completely wasted in this movie as a freaked-out French furrier. The two human "dog lovers" -- rehashed from the earlier film, but with different actors -- are completely boring. When they have a spaghetti dinner at an Italian restaurant, the movie cuts back and forth between the two lovers, and their dogs at home, watching the dinner scene from "Lady and the Tramp." I thought to myself, "Oh please, don't go there!" I half-expected the humans to do a satire on the "Lady and the Tramp" dinner scene -- as Charlie Sheen did in "Hot Shots: Part Deux" -- doing the "spaghetti strand kiss," pushing the meatball with his nose, etc.And don't get me started on the annoying parrot with Eric Idle's voice. The costumes were nominated for an Oscar, and the costumes in the movie *are* good. But they are the only good thing in the movie. The rest of it is unbearable dreck.
More of those cute little puppies...
posted on 17 Nov 2007Unlike its predecessor, which was a live action version of the animated 101 Dalmatians, this version is completely new and original. However, the premise is as old as they get: boy finds girl, boy gets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl again, and they all live happily ever after. Of course, I'm not giving anything away here because the movie is not about the humans; it's about the dogs and one bird.
And you can't leave out the bird. The bird is the real star of the movie. His name is Waddlesworth, and he is a MacCaw that does more than just talk -- he converses. The voice is that of Eric Idle (of Monty Python fame). Waddlesworth thinks he's a dog and cannot fly and is the comic relief for the movie, adding asides for our enjoyment. This film is better than 101 Dalmatians, which in its own right was very good, and both children and adults will enjoy it. It is pure entertainment. My teenager and six-year-old both liked it and said Waddlesworth was their favorite character. This is typical Disney entertainment: Wholesome with just enough adult humor for mom and dad, excitement for the teenagers, and tenderness for the younger ones. Besides, who doesn't like a little puppy? This movie has 102 of them!
a dopey movie which didn't even bother to try
posted on 30 Sep 2007This movie provided NOTHING new or worthwhile. After seeing it, my wife and I both agreed that the studio simply churned this out and could have cared less if it was entertaining. This is a good example of a "concept only" film--they have a concept about a film and the other details are unimportant because execs KNOW it will make $$ just based on the initial concept. The movie starts with Cruella getting out of prison and going on parole. She no longer hates puppies but has been programmed to adore them--she simply couldn't hurt a flea. This doesn't last too long after her release and she's back to her old ways. Period. The most annoying aspects of the movie were the supporting characters. Eric Idle as the voice of Waddlesworth the bird made me HATE him--and that is TOUGH considering I am a die-hard Python fan. It was obvious he did this because they gave him lots of money (there can't be any other reason). Cruella's low self-esteem servant, Tim McInnerny, was funny in the Black Adder shows but here he is totally wasted and unfunny. And it must have cost a few bucks to get Gérard Depardieu but he was utterly wasted as well. There were some other supporting actors as well but given how poorly written the characters were, I am trying to block them out of my mind.Overall, you'd be better just to let your kids watch television than bother letting them see this drivel.
Not for kids, not for anyone.
posted on 14 Jul 2007This film was pure pain. Sitting in the theater for x-amount of minutes, I was wondering when the film was going to start. All the setups were in place; typical love story, characters have to overcome their short-givings, villain has to emerge, but none of it ever initiated. By the time these things happened, I was already bored stiff and the devices were completely ineffective. In scenes that required immense tension and buildup, it felt like necessary frames were cut. Kid's stuff does not have to be this way. Children's films can be as riveting and engaging as adult ones. The excuse, "hey , its for kids," is bull. I'll take "Sword in the Stone" any day. This was terrible. I'm getting the feeling that Disney will put out anything these days. And as for the kids, the 10-year I saw this with will agree...pure trash.
Pretty cute, actually.
posted on 12 Jul 2007While this was a better movie than 101 Dalmations (live action, not animated version), I think it still fell a little short of what Disney could do. It was well-filmed, the music was more suited to the action, and the effects were better done (compared to 101). The acting was perhaps better, but then the human characters were given far more appropriate roles in this sequel, and Glenn Close is really not to be missed, as in the first movie. She makes it shine. Her poor lackey and the overzealous furrier sidekicks are wonderful characters to play off of, and they add to the spectacle Disney has given us. This is a great family film, with little or no objectionable material, and yet it remains fun and interesting for adults and children alike. It's bound to be a classic, as so many Disney films are. Here's to hoping the third will be even better still- because you know they probably want to make one. ;)
Well, the puppies were cute...
posted on 17 May 2007I decided that this was going to be the first movie that I took my young daughter to see. Seeing as how she is a dog lover and is riveted to the TV screen every time she sees a commercial or TV show with a puppy, I figured how could I go wrong?I was sadly disappointed. I found that the movie tried too hard to be dark and sinister....Cruella got way too much screen time and the puppies, too little. The movie just wasn't much fun. Amazingly, my daughter got an hour or so of entertainment from this film, and then got horribly bored. We ended up leaving before the movie was finished, so I'm not even sure how it ended. The movie was cute, but it ran way too long for the younger set who have a reduced attention span. More time should have been devoted to the puppies and their antics, and less to Cruella and her scheming. I don't believe I was the only one who felt this way....as my daughter and I were leaving the theatre, I noticed two youngsters fast asleep. Not a good testimonial for a children's film.Save this one for a video rental so your kids can fast forward through the boring bits before they, too, fall fast asleep.
jaw-dropping dud
posted on 19 Apr 2007Remember the name Kevin Lime - and please, please never lethim direct again. Timing, pacing, editing: all hopelessly wrong.Three or four decent professionals (next time, guys, walk off theset) can do nothing to save this film from amateurs like AliceEvans, and the kind of production standards you'd expect fromteen-produced children's shows on british TV.Greatest mystery: the music. A score so inept, inappropriate andill-matched to the tone of the film that one seriously wonders if it isa case of sabotage. Add an acoustic that booms apparentlyunengineered from a single mike, and a director who onlyintermittently remembers to add auditory action offscreen, and wehave what must be on of the greatest ratio of money to result ofrecent years.
Good, Clean Fun For The Whole Family
posted on 04 Feb 2007Glenn Close was born to play Cruella De Vil. She is just magnificent in this role, this time playing a reformed Cruella ("Just call me Ella") who slowly drifts back into her puppy-napping ways, lusting after a Dalmatian coat. There's a lot of fun in this movie - and a lot of adorable puppies - and (amazingly!) absolutely nothing here that should make you embarrassed to let your five year old watch it with you. No language, no violence, no sexual innuendo. That in itself is worth applause.Unfortunately I have no children. I watched this primarily out of curiosity and while it was an enjoyable enough way to help pass an afternoon it contained little of substance to keep me glued to the set, so my attention did wander from time to time. Trust me on this - you'll enjoy this a lot more if you watch it with a child. My (admittedly adult) feeling? 5/10. The child within me would go significantly higher.
Good Entertainment for Children
posted on 20 Nov 2006Only reason I have seen 101 Dalmatians was its nominations for original song and costume design for the Oscars. I must admit that I was less than impressed with this film. In this sequel, Cruella DeVil(by the way Glen Close pulls off this role very well) is released from the hospital due to her good behaviour. She likes all sort of animals and locks all her furs away. From that point, we only wait until she starts having crises. Soon enough, she does and tries to make the best coat of fashion world, of course for herself and from fine Dalmatian fur. Apart from Glen Close, I found all cast quite silly but from a child's eye funny. That is fair enough as its target market is, I assume, children under 12. Quite a good entertainment for children and families, but didn't do much for me. * out of *****

a pale imitation of it's predecessor
posted on 24 Aug 2009unfortunately,this second live action film is a pale imitation of its predecessor.it's a lot slower, and the story feels contrived.it almost seems like filler to me.there are a few comic moments, though not as many as its predecessor.i think they should have left it at the first one,101 Dalmatians.Glenn Close returns as Cruella De Vil,and is good, but has much less to do this time around.plus, her two henchmen form th preventions film are not in this one,and they added some comic relief.Gerard Depardieu is in this one,in a completely ridiculous role, and he looks quite silly,to be polite.despite its problems its still watchable.my vote for 102 Dalmations is a 5/10
