It could have been good- but it wasn't.
posted on 20 Aug 200950 First Dates had the potential to be a sweet romantic movie about a guy trying to help the woman of his dreams fall in love with him every day, however it delivered a stupid movie filled with stalking, illogical ideas and penis jokes. Maybe I have too logical of a mind for a movie like this, didn't think I did, but apparantly I can't appreciate Rob Schiender in booty shorts and belly button tees and Sean Astin (who I used to respect) lisping in mesh muscle tank tops... this movie owes us a couple stars -**s
A Sandler movie for romantics
posted on 14 Aug 2009This movie started out like a typical Sandler comedy, and gradually gain momentum as a heartfelt romantic comedy. Despite some crudeness and idiotic jokes in the beginning, I would say that overall this was a love story, not a typical Sandler comedy. The acting by Sandler was both funny and touching, even the scene in which he was the typical 'Sandler' in his slapstick comedies. The story was well-written overall and I was truly touched by his love for her. The ending of this movie was as beautiful an ending as I've ever seen in a movie. People who are romantics will truly enjoy this movie as much as me and my wife did.
HILARIOUS!!!!!!! Yet romantic
posted on 10 Aug 2009As i said HILARIOUS!!!!!!! yet Romantic. It was soooooooooo funny, especially all the stunts he got up to in order to get her attention, especially when he got Ula to 'mug' him, amazing. Her brother Doug brought the movie to life. And it wouldn't have been the same without Ula, no movie is complete without Rob Schneider. Alexa and the Walrus were 2 hilarious characters that are impposible to forget. It was soooooooo sweet, all the romantic dates they went on, and how he made her fall in love with him every day; why can't all men be like that these days?! It was really sad when she said she'd brake up with him though! I cried! But it was a brilliant ending to a brilliant movie. A ten out of ten in my book. I can't stop watching it! I highly recommend it if your up for a laugh and a cry. You can't stop it for anything. Thank-you for a wonderful movie!
Funny if not memorable
posted on 06 Aug 200950 First Dates is a funny comedy that doesn't deviate from the Hollywood standard. This makes it a standard comedy that can be appreciated for just that. It's fun to see Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore in their respective roles, since I enjoy both actors in most movies they have done. They are able take the standard dialogue written for this movie and make it somewhat enjoyable because of the interaction of the two actors works. I must also mention that Lusia Strus who plays Alexa is quite funny in her role even though the jokes centered around her is quite predictable. But sometimes, predictable (aka staying safe) can work and it does most of the time in funny ways. A solid enough 7 out of 10.
Undateable!
posted on 27 Jul 2009Here are 50 reasons why I should have stood up `50 First Dates':1) Adam Sandler was no Mr. Sandman as an island gigolo who falls for an amnesiac who cannot remember her experiences of the previous day (which scarcely enough resembles my monthly series entitled `50 Last Hangovers'.)2) `Who plays the amnesiac?' you ask. I forgot! Why? Because her performance did not cause enough brain chemical reaction to transfix itself in my cerebral cortex. Ok! I will stop brainwashing you on the negativity of her performance and tell you who it is: Drew Barrymore.3) Director Peter Segal, who also guided the disciples `Anger Management' & `The Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps', is no directorial professor and actually needs to take some courses on director management.4) George Wing's vapid screenplay is of the not-right wing party group.5-50) it sucks! It sucks! It sucks! It sucks! Now `copy' and `paste' the previous phrase 43 more times! Please do not set a date to view `50 First Dates'! ** Needs Improvement
Sandler & Barrymore are wonderful together as always
posted on 23 Jul 200950 First Dates is funny romantic comedy that is just funny. One day Sandler meets Barrymore in a Cafe a plan a date for the next day. Unfortunatly, he finds out that she has Short Term Memory Problem & meets her several times hoping she will eventually remember him. Their on screen chemistry is sweet. My one problem with the script is that he tries to make a tape for her that she watches everyday & she cries & cries which is mean, but that didn't stop me from liking this film. Rob Scheinder is hilarious as Sandler's friend Ula. 50 First Dates is a romantic comedy that is sweet & funny at the same time. Sandler & Barrymore work well together & I would like to see them do another movie together.6/10
Funniest Part!(spoiler)
posted on 15 Jul 2009How funny was the part at the beginning where the lady was talking about him and she says in anoher language..."He pounded me like mallard duck" and you see it in subtitles. When i saw that i thought i was back to old school adam sandler movies like happy and billy. This was still one of his better though, funny and a good story for Adam.
Not a bad movie for Valentine's Day
posted on 15 Jul 2009Adam Sandler does his best to make this an entertaining movie. It works for the most part if one is looking for a mediocre romantic comedy. I saw the movie on Valentine's Day and the theater was packed with young couples hoping to enjoy a romantic, "cute" movie. There were a few scenes that just didn't jive with the overall sentiment of the movie. But Sandler seems to always throw one or two lame, gross displays of simpleton humor into his movies. So there ya go. 5/10
so so
posted on 13 Jul 200950 First Dates is a watchable, sort of funny but nothing more. Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler have genuine chemistry. The film's premise, about a guy who falls in love with a woman with no short term memory is not very funny. The movie gets off to a slow start, with Barrymore's father and brother trying to tell her it's the same day all over again day after day. This part of the movie is not believable because sooner or later she would catch on. The second half improves because it has more of Barrymore and Sandler together. Still, I am not a big fan of Adam Sandler or Drew Barrymore. Sandler plays the same character over and over again. I think Barrymore is a good actress who has wasted herself in one mediocre movie after another, such as the Charlie's Angels movies. I think she can do better. A generous 5/10
Brilliantness!
posted on 13 Jul 2009This is such a cute film! Although, i wasn't convinced at first. Once the it all gets going, it's pretty damn good! Both actors done an amazing job. They were pretty much perfect for the characters. I can def see how it would make people cry. It shows what people do for love/the one they love. It took you through a whole range of emotions and yes, it does make you laugh. If it doesn't, what's wrong with you?! Things don't always go to plan and this shows that but things will work out in the end! Especially if you fight for what you want!I found it to be a really original storyline and I would recommend this to anyone!
Adam Sandler's Best movie yet!
posted on 07 Jul 2009The story was creative, every joke, every one liner a screamer.
This movie is the most funny and best Romance movie ever! All of the major Characters, Sandler, Barrymore, Schneider (Funniest) Astin, Strus, Clark, Aykroyd, Covert, Brown, Nakashima, and Amy Hill were all hilarious! I have never seen a realistic Romance comedy before where every single major character is hilarious. I recommend this to anyone who loves; Comedy, Romance, Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider, Drew Barrymore. I give it a 10, and the award for being the best Romance Comedy ever!
Not great, but above average rom-com with Sandler and Barrymore.
posted on 19 Jun 2009Sandler plays a marine biologist who lovingly cares for his assortment of animals in a SeaWorld type of environment. The opening sequence shows how he meets pretty Hawaiian tourists, romances them, and they leave, with no commitment, no follow up. Barrymore plays a very sweet instructor who has a loving father and brother, but a short-term memory problem that creates the interest in the movie's story. I mostly like both Sandler and Barrymore, and they are good together here. The story is a fantasy, and best appreciated as such. It doesn't come up to the standard set by my favorite rom-coms, but it is a very nice movie in its own way. The first half is not as enjoyable at times, because of the often silly humor, especially with Rob Schneider, but the second half makes the movie.SPOILERS follow, for my own recollection, please read no further. When Sandler meets Barrymore in the local restaurant over breakfast, they hit it off immediately when he helps make a toothpick hinge for the house she is building with her waffles. She is different from all the others, and he looks forward to seeing her again the next morning. Which he does. But she has no memory of him and rebuffs what she senses is a pushy guy. Turns out she was in a car wreck a year or so earlier and developed a short-term memory problem, a specific kind (fantasy) which erases each day's new memories as she sleeps overnight. Akin to 'Groundhog Day', but exactly the opposite, where days continue but her memory does not. But Sandler persists, as he develops a particular affection for this sweet girl, gains the trust of her dad and brother, uses videotape to show her their relationship.
Movie ends with her waking up on a boat, looking out a port hole, going on deck, there are Sandler and their daughter, videotape remaining her connection with previous days.
Loved this Movie
posted on 17 Jun 2009I would like to start off by saying that I hate Adam Sandler movies. But I have to compromise if I expect him to see a chick flick with me. My husband loves SNL people movies and I find them stupid. I like movies with substance and that make you think. He hates them. I was forced to see this movie and I loved it. It was sweet without being to corny, I could have done without the other SNL guy (Rob Snider). I love romantic movies like this that don't seem to be like other movies. It is a great movie that my husband and I both enjoy. It is our movie the perfect combo of what we both like, and it is refreshing. It is on my top ten list for favorite movies.
Make up your mind
posted on 17 Jun 2009The premise here is derivative but full of potential. In short, two lovers are stuck in the same day. The woman (Barrymore) is stuck due to a mental impairment that prevents her from retaining new memories. The man (Sandler) is stuck because, smitten with her, he resigns himself to the same fate. Day after day he takes her on a romantic first date, knowing she'll never remember him in the morning. The filmmakers could have played this a number of ways. They could have played to Barrymore's strengths and made on those edgeless rom-coms in which everything turns out fine in the end. They could have played to Sandler's strengths and exploited the idea for cheap, crude laughs. They could have opted for the black humour and narrative fun of 'Groundhog Day.' There are certain filmmakers who would work this idea as a tragicomedy. The problem is the filmmakers never choose one of the above paths. They try to negotiate them all. Therefore, despite some promise, we get a painfully uneven film that never resolves the issue of whether to take itself seriously or not. We get scenes that belong in a harmless rom-com, we get scenes that belong in a bittersweet drama, and we get scenes involving Rob Schneider and a barfing walrus. I doubt anyone could meld these into a cohesive film.To understand why this doesn't work, consider the ending. The film concludes with a 'solution' that is presented as sweet and romantic. But it's not. Consider the dilemma Barrymore's character would wake up to every morning. Throughout the film, Sandler's character is presented as decent and well-meaning but what he does at the end is selfish and cruel.Of the four stars I awarded, three are for Barrymore who tried hard to hold this mess together with sweetness and charm. In the end, though, this movie is just too poorly conceived.
Garbage, Local Style
posted on 09 Jun 2009Fifty First Dates is state-of-the-(f)art Farrelly Bros style filmed comedy circa 2000. The closest this warped mess comes to normality is in parading a few familiar comic faces. Ackroyd is here lazily loafing his way through his now-standard role. That gravel-voiced guy from countless HBO comedy specials does a decent almost-dramatic turn as Drew Barrymore's father (he should have pulled Sandler aside and talked to him about career transitioning). Rob Schneider is on hand as "Cheech Marin 30 years ago" (quite a role, that). And dear Sam Wise He-Shall-Ever-Be, Sean Astin, desecrates his little plaque in the film hall of fame yet again, this time as a steroidal, lisping weight-lifter with a predilection for fishnet tank tops. (The producers lack the courage to wholly own what they clearly intend him to be. By this little game, they get to shoot lots of digs at gays through this character, without having to take any responsibility for it. "YOU said he was gay; WE never said that." Come on, guys!)That's the high part of this low comedy. The lower and lowest part includes an incredibly sexist, anti-humanistic Miss Jane character, straight out of the 50s and 60s. The choicest part of her thankless, grindingly self-humiliating role is to get sprayed with fifty gallons of thousand island dressing by a vomiting sea lion. --And seeing Rob Schneider stick a cigarette in his butt crack the way some people stick a cigarette or pencil over one ear. No lie.My qualms with Adam Sandler Struggling Film Star continue, basically unchallenged by anything the man seems capable of doing. Sandler, you'll recall, made his name as a comic during a brief tenure on the relatively freer small screen, seeming to make comedy history there before devolving into a mid-level star in one mediocre-to-abysmal film after another. Sandler shares this curse with his fellow SNL alumni: A flash of seeming brilliance on the tube followed by an excruciating film death. Sandler's persona isn't robust, antic or madly inventive like Jim Carrey's or Robin William's. Minus the crutch of the SNL writers, he always seems bereft of material. But more to the point, film tests any actor's likability quotient, as the small screen, with its super-short formula, doesn't. The actor who kills 'em in a four minute sketch on a TV show may chew on your last nerve in a two hour big screen vehicle.Sandler shows up over and over again as a just-plain-guy devoted to all the guy things half the audience wouldn't understand (sports, beer and pizza, never cleaning the house, porn, flatulence jokes, etc.). These tired received attitude jokes are the only possible source of comedy in any Sandler film. To me, this means one thing: Lacking a strong comedic persona, Sandler has been handed one off-the-rack by Hollywood. He isn't being well-served by this arrangement, to be sure. Sandler would do well to follow Bill Murray's sterling, self-aware example and gravitate toward drama. Punch Drunk Love should have shown him that. At this point, it's that or nothing, it seems to me.Zero Stars. There is no defense for this films existence beside helping the millionaire makers stave off indigence for one more day. If you feel like depositing funds in their account, go ahead. Just remember I warned you.
romanticizing tough condition works for Sandler
posted on 28 May 2009This movie is one of Mr. Sandler's glimmering jewels among dead weight rocks. In my opinion it ranks up there with The Wedding Singer, also co starring Drew Barrymore. Maybe its her characters' innocent charm that brings out Sandlers better, romantic side. The problem for me comes with way they romanticize the situation. Many married people split after one of them goes through the trauma Lucy has, and yet according to the movie, it is appealing to have to get your lover up to speed every day of their life. I admire the person that can do that, and only the best of wishes for those like Henry who know what lies ahead of them and they still make that commitment. But in reality, its not so exciting and uplifting. In that respect, it is good of them to have Lucy feel like she is inconveniencing Henry. The scenery is beautiful, the editing/styling on segments like the pineapple intro and crash scene were marvelous; really displaying what the company's/producers are capable of producing. aside from the 'birdies' (not including the penguin), the film is incredible! i love it!
Adam Sandler Revives himself with this brilliant comedy
posted on 14 May 2009I must admit that I thought Sandler was going more or less downhill rather than uphill, with movies such as Mr Deeds, Big Daddy, The Waterboy & Little Nicky, although these are all OK movies but not the usual Sandler great. This movie has certainly shown that Sandler is still a great actor, him & Drew Barrymore have done 2 great movies now, the other being "The Wedding Singer". It was great to see Sean Astin coming back into comedy with this outstanding performance from his character "Doug" every scene he was in was hilarious, especially the scene when hes doing situps on the chandeliers. On the other hand Rob Schneider was also amazing in his role of "Ula". Overall this is an amazing Adam Sandler movie. If your an old Sandler fan you are gonna appreciate this one. This Definitely deserves a 10/10.Everyone was great in this movie, never boring & always funny.
Quit Complaining about plots, this is meant to entertain
posted on 14 May 2009Considering I deal with a lot of writing depth, often mature material and research, and watch lots of serious and engrossing plots ... sometimes I want to unwind with something I don't have to think about a lot, but can make me laugh. The so - called critics, whose jibs I have read here, have probably never performed in public, published any literature, or studied drama. Adam is generally a goof in his parts. But have any of you ever diliberated on how difficult it can be to do any kind of comedy? He makes you laugh. If you don't like his brand of humor, don't watch. This particular film I enjoyed because not only was it light, but if you are intelligent enough to know what to look for you can tell he has a lot of range in his ability. Sure, he is goofy, but he has a lot of ability in those moments he actually shows emotion through his eyes and facial expression. Drew had some good moments as well. As to Sean, I can only imagine he had a blast just letting go and not having to be a lead. Anyone who doubts his ability doesn't have to watch his Hobbit, go back and watch "Rudy". Oh well, there is always going to be complainers. I watched, I liked, and now own a copy of this film.

Sweet story stuffed behind puke and Rob Schnieder
posted on 24 Aug 200950 First Dates50 First Dates marks the on screen reunion of Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler who co-starred in The Wedding Singer. In this one, Sandler plays a Hawaiian aquarium worker who has a propensity for showing single female tourists a good time during their visits. Barrymore is a local who has no short term memory. They fall in love, but with one catch, it has to happen for the first time every day.I am somewhat split on my opinion of this one. The problem is that the story is sweet and almost compelling, but is veiled behind a combination of toilet humor, sex jokes and Rob Schneider. The only thing that got a legitimate laugh out of me was the character of Sean Astin. Both Barrymore and Sandler are in fine form and do a good job of making the love story authentic, but in my opinion cannot save this film from its far from effective juvenile comedy. Over all grade: 5
