What a frightful waste of time...

posted on 22 Aug 2009

This is probably one of the worst movies I have seen so far this year. Dull, boring, not-making-a-lot-of-sense... lots of holes in the plot and acting which I have seen better in school plays.. Actually I think I would prefer watching 'Bloodrayne' and 'Bloodrayne 2' again as opposed to this lame excuse of a movie. If you have never seen any movies in this genre (The Omen, Stigmata, Bless The Child and so on) - please - do not watch this one. It will make you run away from the genre... But OK - to be fair to this movie - I haven't seen the first one (666 The Child.. I think), but I do not feel any urge to see the first one. It probably could have been OK for a Sunday with a hangover if they had changed the script, the director and the actors...

" Genre that wouldn't die, ANTI-Christ CINEMA !"

666: THE BEAST Theasylum.cc" Genre that wouldn't die, ANTI-Christ CINEMA !" In the tradition of Devil's Advocate, Omen , and Stigmata…Well sort of. This is a direct sequel to 666: The Child,And the boy has grown up and become the leader of the devil's new army. The director's commentary will amuse and there is no fighting for the microphone like Theasylum's usual. Collin Brock as the lead priest is the best of male leads, Great accent. The actresses are very well represented by- Makinna Ridgway is very talented as our resident good girl and The Bad Girl, Alma Saraci steals every scene she is in with a million dollar arse( Which the producers INSISTED on showing numerous occasions). The film was good and obviously the original did well,But would have preferred a sequel to DRACULA'S CURSE, lol!

Good Actors + Sub-Par Story = Average Movie

posted on 07 Feb 2008

Basic setup: The devil turns out to be a CEO bent on world domination. This is an average film, that's a good thing, and here's why.Asylum has decided to back away from making terrible films. Films with choppy acting, terrible sound, and god awful plots, such as Universal Soldiers (Emphasis on the plural). Most of these films were so bad, that tons of pointless (though nice to watch) nudity had to be tossed in to give viewers an excuse to rent (See Invasion of the Pod People). 666: The Beast is a shocking departure from the terrible - It's not great, nor good, but compared to what's they've done (Snakes on a Train, anyone?), it's a heck of an improvement. The Good: First off, the sound design is, shockingly, good. Gone is the camcorder audio of films past; if they didn't get it right the first time, they went to ADR, like you're supposed to. God bless that.Second, 666: The Beast was shot in 10 days, but at no time does it look it. Dolly shots abound, with proper lighting. How they achieved those types of setups with that limited time frame is beyond me. Up until that point, I thought only Michael Feifer could pull that off professionally. Very good.Third, the acting. Asylum is known for crappy acting. It's their hallmark of recent years, and I can't put a better spin on it beyond what I've said. Somehow, that's changed in this 666 sequel. The scenes between the two leads, Donald Lawson and Ashmed Chammadai, at times, work very well. Some scene shooting was rushed, one scene was done in 90 minutes for example - in a normal Asylum film, that would be tantamount to embarrassing performances by the actors. Not here, the leads pull it together the best they could given the conditions. Ashmed in particular, who has come a long way since his "911 Commission Report" days; he's now showing he has the chops to handle a real film. Even Alma Saraci catches the eye with her looks and screen class.Fourth Directing: Nick Everhart can direct, and direct well. He fights for his scenes, knows where the camera should be, and did a very good job.The Bad:The script. Nick is a good director, but as a writer, apparently not so much. The story sinks what could have been a very modest religious thriller. Some of the corniest dialog gets tossed into what seems to be, just horrible writing. Good actors, with talent, are directed to say/do retarded things. Examples: why is a priest mysteriously, suddenly, and conveniently allowed to be in the middle of a crime scene! Or, why is this multimillion dollar corporation look everything like a small company with only 4 employees, total? Or why does the devil have only 5 followers in robes (Actually, this part is explained in the commentary - answer, money + time). So why is the script so bad that an entry level screenwriter could have done better? In my opinion, it needed at least 1, possibly 2 scrub overs. I really get the feeling Asylum gives their writers a week to toss out a script before they shoot. If that's the case, I can see why 666: The Beast fails as a story.Set Design: A hospital emergency room that looks like someone's cubicle? Yes Nick, to his credit, tries to hide with quick camera cuts and tight shots, but there's no escaping it - the ER looks like the office cubicle they filmed it in.Editing: Not so much a complaint, but Kristen Quintrall's style, which had been one of the few positives that Asylum had prior to this film, is noticeably missing. Rumor has it she's moved on to doing work for Nickelodeon, which might explain her absence. Who knows. Conclusion: It's average, but for Asylum, that's a positive trend. The DVD includes a trailer for "I am Omega." Unlike the trailer for 666: The Beast, this one looks hot. Has Asylum turned over a new leaf? We'll find out for sure next month.

Amazingly even worse than the original.

666: The Beast starts a number of years after the original 666: The Child (2006) & is set in Los Angeles where Donald Lawson (Chad Mathews) is a balding middle aged executive at a company called GlobalTech. His boss promotes Donald to junior vice president of the company & also reveals that Donald is in fact the Antichrist destined to take over the world which all things considered Donald takes pretty well. However Donald's boss also says that a baby will be born who will have the power to destroy him unless he kills it first, as by a strange (budget saving) coincidence it's Donald's wife Kate (Makinna Ridgway) who is pregnant with the baby. So in a roundabout ironic sort of way the only person who can stop Donald destroying the Earth is his wife, the one person who loves him the most...Writeen & directed by Nick Everhart 666: The Beast is The Asylum's straight-to-DVD sequel to their straight-to-DVD The Omen (2006) rip-off 666: The Child & against all the odds the makers of this have actually turned in a worse film than the original. I saw 666: The Child a couple of days ago so basically I have seen both in the space of a weekend & quite frankly I almost lost the will to live they are that bad. At least 666: The Child had a plot which you could follow, sure it didn't make much sense & it was pretty poor but there were at least signs of a story there while in the case of 666: The Beast you will struggle to find anything approaching a coherent story. 666: The Beast was a straight The Omen rip-off with a creepy demonic kid this time around Donald is grown up & the first hour or so is nothing more than him getting a promotion & then being told his true destiny which he takes surprisingly well. Who was his boss anyway? How did he know who Donald was? Why was he Donald's boss? Wouldn't it have more sense if Donald was the company president? I doubt Donald will be able to mastermind the destruction of the entire world as a junior vice president! There's precious little incident, there's no horror, there's no gore, the story is awful, the supernatural elements are absolute rubbish & what happened to the sexy secretary Sydonai? It moves along at a snail's pace & is really boring, hardly anything happens & the whole thing is just a mess.Director Everhart has the shaky camera syndrome, it's not as bad as The Blair Witch Project (1999) but the camera sways gently from side to side on most shots. Basically it looks awful as well as being horrible to watch. There are a couple of scenes set in a church which are quite moody since they are lit by huge shafts of sunlight coming in through the window & they are at odds with how bland the rest of 666: The Beast looks to the extent they almost feel like they belong in a different film. The gore is none existent, all the murders from the first film 666: The Child are replayed in flashbacks but as far as original gore goes there are a few off screen stabbings & a bit of fake blood otherwise absolutely nothing. There's certainly nothing in 666: The Beast I would describe as a special effect. With a supposed budget of about $500,000 the makers didn't have a lot of money to play with but that's really no excuse for turning in such an awful film, there are plenty of low budget horror films out there which are much, much better than this. The acting sucks as well.666: The Beast is a terrible film, it's one of those films which make you want to reach for the 'stop' button on your remote control & how I managed to prevent myself from pressing it I will never know. 666: The Beast is awful & it's as simple & straight forward as that.
