PLOT SUMMARY

In the farm of Oregon Dottie Henson and Kit Keller are working on the farm. Sisters that do love each other, except when it comes to baseball. Kit wants to play in the league but is upset to hear that it is Dottie who is chosen to play for the AAPGL. (All American Pro Girls League) Dottie refuses to play unless Kit can come along. AAPGL was only made because of the World War II and all of the man were in the war. Along the way to the stadium they meet Marla Hooch who is a great hitter, but to most people not the prettiest girl. When they are going to try out they meet Doris and Mae because Doris threw a baseball at Dottie who caught it impressing Doris. They girls find out their new manager is Jimmy Dugan. Jimmy Dugan drinks a lot and is the worst manager until Dottie get through to him and he becomes a better person. Miss Cuthbert makes sure the rules are followed, no boys, no drinking or smoking until Mae poisons her meal. The girls go to party and Marla who had been overlooked a lot is noticed by a guy named Nelson. Dottie's husband Bob is in the army and when news comes that a man in the army has been killed it turns out to be Betty Spaghetti. After awhile, Kit feels that once again like at home she is behind Dottie's shadow. Dottie notices it to and asks to be transferred to another team. Of course Mr. Lovitz doesn't want the best player to be transferred so he has Kit transferred to Racine. Kit feels that Dottie did this on purpose. Kit plays for the Racine while Dottie plays for Rockford. In the final scene Dottie is crashed into by Kit and she drops the ball, letting Racine win, making Kit have her own stardom instead of being in Dottie's shadow. The girls have a reunion and they remember the fun they had together.

Brilliant!

Its a true classic! I have watched this film probably about 10 times, I love it! The first time I watched it, I think I was 11. I was just struck by the brilliant performances, everyone was great... no, they were all fantasic. Its one of my all time favourite movies. It made me laugh, cry, cheer, and think. What more do you want in a movie? It is just so real, so understanding and so human. If you haven't watched this film, watch it and I am sure you'll love it forever.

Awesome Movie!!!

Great movie for the entire family. It's about girls playing baseball during the war while the men are away. It's a must see. Watch once or again and again!

When World War II threatens to shut down Major League Baseball, candy manufacturing magnate Walter Harvey (Garry Marshall) decides to create a women's league to make money. Ira Lowenstein (David Strathairn) is put in charge and scout Ernie Capadino (Jon Lovitz) is sent out to recruit players.Capadino likes what he sees in catcher Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis). She's a terrific hitter and, almost as important, a "doll". He offers her a tryout, but the married woman is content where she is, working in a dairy and on the family farm in Oregon. He's less impressed with her younger sister, pitcher Kit Keller (Lori Petty), who loves the game passionately, but appears to be less talented. He finally lets her come along when she persuades Dottie to give it a try. Along the way, he also checks out Marla Hooch (Megan Cavanagh), a great ambidextrous slugger from Fort Collins, Colorado, but the blunt-speaking scout sees too much of a resemblance to General Omar Bradley and rejects her. Dottie and Kit refuse to leave without her, and Ernie reluctantly gives in.When they arrive at the tryouts in Chicago, they meet Doris Murphy (Rosie O'Donnell) and Mae Mordabito (Madonna). They are all assigned to the same team, the Rockford Peaches, which is managed by drunken, former baseball great Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks). Initially, Jimmy treats the whole thing as a joke, leaving the coaching duties to Dottie. But he eventually takes over, as he sees how hard and well his team is playing. At first, the league attracts little interest. In one memorable scene, Lowenstein tells the Peaches that things aren't going so well and that the owners are having second thoughts. With a Life magazine photographer in attendance, he asks them to do something spectacular. Dottie obliges. When a ball is popped up behind home plate, she catches it while doing the splits; the resulting photograph makes the cover of the magazine. Jimmy is (predictably) disgusted, while the opposing coach and catcher are stunned. Gradually, more and more people show up and the league becomes a success. When Dottie wants to quit, Lowenstein is alarmed. He had been publicizing the photogenic catcher as the "Queen of Diamonds". He mistakenly thinks it's because of a personality conflict with her sister, so he has Kit traded to another team, the Racine Belles. This exacerbates the already intense sibling rivalry between the two women. Kit has a massive inferiority complex; Dottie is a better player, a better hitter and much more beautiful. Kit blames her sister for getting her traded. The two meet again in the championship game of the AAGPBL World Series. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Kit comes up to bat, with her team trailing. She hits the ball into the outfield and rounds the bases, ignoring the stop signal by the third base coach. Dottie catches the ball and blocks home plate, but Kit runs into her so hard she can't (or won't) hold onto the ball and Kit scores the winning run. Dottie quits baseball to be with her husband Bob (Bill Pullman), who has returned from the war, but before she leaves, she and Kit reconcile. Many years later, the two sisters, who haven't seen each other in quite a while, are reunited, along with many of their Peaches teammates, at the opening of a women's section in the Baseball Hall of Fame

Wow what a great movie! The actors in it are wonderful Tom Hanks, Madonna, Rosie O'Donnel what more could you ask for people? This movie really shows what women can do, very inspiring! I love the part when they poison the chaparone person and they sneak off to go dancing! I thought it was funny :). Its a really good movie especially for women!

"Girls playing baseball?" More than just a 'chick flick!'

This has to be one of my favorite movies. No other movie makes me laugh, cry, remember certain lines, and basically make me feel good about myself. It's one of those movies that leaves you with such a smile you can't wait until you watch it again. That's the way I am, at least. You can't help but love Stillwell "Angel", whose mother pleads with her manager that "he's a really sweet boy. Everyone will love him" when he's far from the angel he's called. You can't help but love Marla Hooch, who shows looks aren't everything by her batting. And who doesn't love Kit, the tagalong kid sister who wants to break free from her Queen of Diamonds big sister Dottie? With great scenes, great quotes ("There's no crying in baseball!") and great characters, this is a movie to love. See it!

Thank you, Penny Marshall.

This film will always remain high on my list of all-time favourite movies. Having watched this film hundreds (okay, maybe just dozens) of times growing up, I am so glad to finally own the Special Edition DVD copy, far better than my now worn out VHS copy.

A League of their Own embodies every aspect of a great film - it is hilarious at times, sad and touching at others, has great characters, a great story, a fantastic soundtrack (hearing Madonna's "This Used to Be My Playground" at the end makes me tear up every time), and touches on an American past that should never be forgotten, making me nostalgic for a time in which I've never even lived. It is so much more than simply a film about baseball - it is a reminder of how important the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League was, for the girls involved, and for all Americans, who had something comforting to turn to while WWII was on. And what a great cast, from the major stars to the hundreds of real baseball-playing extras. You really couldn't ask for much more of a film.

The Special Edition DVD has a few extras that any fan of the film would thoroughly enjoy, the highlights being a documentary with cast interviews, and an audio commentary featuring some cast members and director, Penny Marshall.

I can't imagine how great it must have been for those involved with the film to be able to recreate this fantastic piece of American history, but I am grateful to Penny Marshall for capturing it on film for us all to witness.

Enjoyable until the last 15 minutes

I really did enjoy (most) of this film - but I can't understand why filmmakers can't just make a period piece and leave it at that - the modern day reunion bit at the end almost ruined what until then had been a hugely enjoyable (if a tad overlong) film. Such a shame.

I *finally* got to see this film and it was a really fun movie. The idea of women playing baseball (and playing well) is a great thing to portray. There is also something about that era that is very magical and meaningful and it shows through well in the movie. The actresses who play the girls are very believable they made it look like fun but also like hard, rewarding work. It made me want to go out and join a women's baseball team! Some parts were a little bit sappy, but it was supposed to be a sensitive film as well as comical. I have mixed emotions about the uniforms because they were cute, but a little bit sexist. This movie is also a movie you can see over and over and enjoy it each time.

A decent film about the only Woman's Baseball League

This is about the most even movie I have ever seen. The film had enough to keep my interest for the duration, but not enough to make me think "Wow, I've just seen a great movie" There is little in the way on conflict for the talented cast to act around. Consider Hanks who plays a recovering alcoholic ex ballplayer. His transformation is not mentioned in any way. One moment drunk and down on himself, the next moment fully recovered and socially functional. There is no down point of this movie so there is no soaring to an up point. The movie is even all the way through. What really peaks your interest is the history behind the league.

Heartwarming and hilarious, the movie features one of Tom Hanks most amusing performances as a former baseball star turned alcoholic manager. And all the female players under his shaky leadership make up a terrific ensemble, including, believe it or not, Madonna.

Fantastic

Review - "A League Of Their Own" Excellent Movie!!!

posted on 10 Mar 2009

"A League of Their Own" (1992), directed by Penny Marshall, takes place during the World War II era. Since a lot of male baseball players were being drafted to the armed forces, an All American Girls Baseball League was formed to try to keep the prosperity of baseball alive in America. The two main characters Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) and Kit Keller (Lori Petty) join up with a whole turnout of women including the flirtatious Mae Mordabito (Madonna) and the strong, bold Doris Murphy (Rosie O'Donnell), and experience life as a female athlete during the 1940's. Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks) is one of the male coaches hired to coach one of the all woman teams, and is one of the many that show transformation throughout the season.
This movie is full of stereotypical ideas of what a female should be, but that is not to say that the movie promotes these ideas. Some examples could be shown through the uniforms that the women are forced to wear, which consists of a skirt! As stated in the movie, the women are to act "ladylike" and are sent to a beauty school, where they are taught "ladylike" manners and are given makeovers. We see in Dottie Hinson, whose husband Bob Hinson (Bill Pullman) is away at war, the outlook of women back then as she almost quits the league by the final game because Bob returns from the war and Dottie's aspirations are to start a family and be a housewife. Even in Jimmy Dugan, the coach barely cares at first about the team and states "girls can't play baseball", and how he doesn't have a team of ballplayers, but a "team of girls". We see a transformation however in him that shows his true love of the game, looking past what gender roles were considered back then. Although there are many more, one last example discussed here is Marla (Megan Cavanagh), who is a better hitter than most men, yet is almost not allowed in the league because she is considered "ugly".
This movie was excellent. It shows how hard it was for women to be taken seriously outside of "housewife" labels that were bestowed upon them, yet it adds great humor throughout to make it a very entertaining, yet educational film!

One of the best films ever...

You may look at the cover and think, "Modonna...in a baseball movie?" And, besides that, the cover, I have always felt, does the film absolutely no justice. It just go to show, the old addage really does apply in this circumstance, 'don't judge a book (or in this case, movie) by its cover.'Picture 1944. Oregon state, farm country. Two girls milking cows, when all of a sudden a man walks into their lives that will change them forever. With a smart, yet for that time, eccentric idea, Harvey Weinstein (Gary Marshall)decides to have a girl's baseball team. Throughout the film, we meet all different characters. Women, all over the country who have come to New York, to become a professional female baseball player. A smart, funny, and ultimately touching film, Penny Marshall directs the piece in a way that is equally heartfelt as it is human, and funny. Tom Hanks and Geena Davis lead the movie, with their talents as dramatic actor and actress, and also comic styles. It's a must watch, for anyone interested in good dramas, and movies that touch not only the soul and heart, but also really mean something in the end.One of the best films to ever come out.

5 Stars for Movie 3 for DVD

This is a great movie starring Geena Davis and Tom Hanks. It is about women in baseball during WWII. The acting is superb but you know what is going to happen through the whole movie meaning it is predictable. This movie was released in 1992 and grossed 109 million dollars. The DVD is disappointing because it doesn't have many extras and doesn't include the Madonna video "This Use To Be My Playground". If you like this movie buy It and if you like Tom Hanks movies try Big(1988).

I can't remember the entire story, but I do remember that it is based on a true story. Tom Hanks plays Jimmy Dugan, a great baseball player who wants more men on his team, what he actually gets is two women. Golden Globe nominated Geena Davis as Dottie Hinson and Madonna as Mae Mordabito are the two women that could play baseball just as good as any man can. Their personals lives did clash a couple of times (I think) but they did continue to play really well and get to a final championship game. Also starring Lori Petty as Kit Keller, Jon Lovitz as Ernie Capadino, Bill Pullman as Bob Hinson and Rosie O'Donnell as Doris Murphy - 3rd Base. It was nominated the Golden Globe for Best Original Song for Madonna and Shep Pettibone's "This Used To Be My Playground". It was number 54 on 100 Years, 100 Quotes ("There's no crying in baseball!"). Good!

While the Men Fought in War, the Women Folk Lead an All-American Baseball Team!

posted on 24 Nov 2008

[CONTAINS SPOILERS] Set in the early 1940's, during the big one: World War II. The men were overseas either getting killed or killing opponents. But the women back home had to amuse themselves, so they started an all-American baseball team. This is their story.
A scout, Ernie Capadino, meets two women, Dottie Hinson and Kit Keller, at their farm one afternoon. Ernie was working for Mr. Harvey, founder of Harvey candy bars, who was starting a woman's baseball team. Dottie is quite good at baseball, but Kit wasn't, but Dottie wouldn't go with Ernie unless Kit could. Ernie is a very sarcastic man. He could really annoy people, but his cameo is scene stealing! They pick up another recruit for the team along the way: Marla Hooch, well, let's just say with her, her beauty is on the inside. They finally arrive at the field and meet other players: Doris Murphy, Mae "All the Way Mae" Mordabito, Evelyn Gardner and more. Ira Lowenstein, Harvey's right-hand man, showed the ladies the new uniforms: skirts. The girls didn't like them one bit.
All they needed now was a coach. Harvey seeked Jimmy Dugan, a washed up drunk baseball legend. Dugan, half sober, was delighted to coach the team. He expressed his gratitude to the women by tearing up their baseball cards and speaking not a word to them. Well, from then on, the ladies really played ball! One of them had a little boy, Stillwell, who would annoy the players. And Dugan just loved kids. I mean that sarcastically. Tension begins to build up: morale drops. Kit picks a fight with Doris. Kit is traded to the other team! Dottie's husband, Bob, returns from overseas and they want to go home, and Dugan is not happy about that, but Dottie returns to win the world series for them.
Forty years later, the ladies, now old women, have a reunion. Sadly, Jimmy Dugan wasn't there. He had died five years earlier.
My opinion of this movie: pretty good. Geena Davis is very pretty, naturally Tom Hanks is good, but why do Tom Hanks' characters always have to yell so much? In all his movies, he either plays a guy who rants and raves or just snaps and starts screaming. Some Hanks movies I like are Big, Forrest Gump, The 'burbs, Turner & Hooch, The Green Mile. Tom Hanks is a good actor, I'm not saying anything against him, just that he ought to tell his characters to take a valium. Rosie O'Donnell, everyone's favorite mouth, is good too. Everybody is good! If you're a fan of Davis, Hanks, Madonna or whatever, then I recommend A League of Their Own!-

A timeless classic...(Contains Spoilers)

It's the early 1940s and a World War is at hand. With most American males, including famous baseball players, going off to war, a plan is made to keep the baseball industry going by drafting women to fill their beloved men's shoes.Enter Dotti Henson and Kit Kellar, two sisters who battle each other both at their home on the farm and on the ball field. Kit, a decent pitcher at best, feels as though she's constantly in the shadow of her older, married, more athletic and all-around better sister, Dotti.During the girls' struggle to see who can truly be "The Best," we meet many colorful characters, including Jimmy Duggan (a brilliant Tom Hanks), coach of the Rockford Peaches, the team Kit and Dotti play for. From there, the balls fly and the base runs just keep on comin'.***POSSIBLE SPOILERS***In my opinion, this is Penny Marshall's best film. Never have a group of women been portrayed in such a graceful AND strong light as "A League of Their Own." Geena Davis, Hanks, and Lori Petty shine in their leading roles, while Rosie O'Donnell, Madonna, and David Strathairn are brilliant as the supporting cast. This timeless piece of cinematography will pull at your heartstrings in ways you've not felt in a long time. We all rolled on the floor laughing when Jimmy Duggan finally outwitted the bratty Steelwell Angel by hitting him in the face with a baseball mitt. No one could stop the tears from flowing when they heard Betty "Spaghetti" scream out the name of her husband George who, along with countless other young soldiers, was never coming back. And who will ever forget the delightful chills they felt in their spine when Kit Keller was hoisted up on her teammates' shoulders to the crowd excitedly chanting her name, finally saving the day and proving that sometimes, simply "wanting it more" really can make all the difference, even removing the brutal power struggle between two sisters who realize that they love each other more than all the home runs in the world.I recommend this film for anyone that wants to see a movie that will make you laugh and cry without taking either to the extreme. "A League of Their Own" is a classic film and will definitely be around for years to come.God bless you all.
