Wow...this is just tripe. I love the wannabe hefty drama/emotional movie title "A Man Apart". This is just another gang bangin' shoot 'em up.

I thought Pitch Black was very good, and I liked the Riddick character. But as soon as I saw the previews for Fast & the Furious, XXX and A Man Apart I knew Vin had fallen into the once promising actor pit. This movie just sucks.

Oh yeah, to the guy who wants Vin to admit he's black, guess what? Vin has stated several times that he's of mixed background, it's easy to see(how many african americans have german names?). Get off of it already.

Not Bad, Not Great

This is the type of movie that would have been fine in the days when you could go to a theater and see two movies for three dollars. A Man Apart would have been perfect as the second movie along with Enter the Dragon or Dirty Harry. But today in major cities we have to pay ten dollars. Is this movie worth ten dollars? No.A Man Apart is entertaining. It moves quickly. It has nice editing, lots of action. Performances are ok for this type of movie. But we have seen this plot before. It's Hard Target revisted. If your video store has a bargain day with a cheap rental, A Man Apart might be worth viewing on a Saturday night. So, I would suggest that you wait for the film to come to video.

Vin Diesel: A Dramatic Actor?!?

posted on 29 Jun 2009

The movie of "A Man Apart" has taken Vin Diesel from an action hero actor to a very good dramatic actor. Vin Diesel plays a narcotic officer who's wife is killed and is force to take "revenge" on the people who murder the woman he loves.Larenz Tate plays Mr. Diesel's partner and a former gang member who's a loyal friend of Diesel's character during his hardship. Mr. Tate does a wonderful job in this role and meshes well with Vin Diesel. So how far a person has to go to avenge the death of a love one without going above the law? It is a tough choice for any individual that has to endure. Overall, the movie does has several action sequences but it is mostly played as a drama instead. The Dark Gengar rates this movie from a single Gengar to ten Gengars: Eight Gengars. The soundtrack could have been better. Enjoy the movies and aloha from one and all.

Great

I thought that they did a great job on this movie. Now i know why its rated "R" I mean for the language, blood, nudity. I would recommend it for people to 16-17 years old.

Great Movie a Must see

This movie is great and a must see. Vin shows his true acting abilities and that he can be more than a tough guy that drives a car. Great movie I would recommend it to anyone who loves action, and it also has a great story about love intertwined with it.

A Story Full of Cliches and Having an Awful Edition of the Action Scenes

posted on 09 Jun 2009

Sean Vetter (Vin Diesel) is a DEA detective, who has been chasing the Mexican drug lord Ramon Cadena (Ken Davitian) for seven years. He finally arrest him in a combined operation of the Mexican and American authorities. He comes back to his beloved wife Stacy (Jacqueline Obradors), and after celebrating in his seaside house with his friends and colleagues, his wife and he suffer an attack in the night and they are shot by the killers. Stacy dies and Sean looks for revenge. He finds out that, with Cadena in prison, a new gang, with the leadership of `El Diablo', is getting the spot of Cadena. Sean chases `El Diablo' looking for revenge. First of all, this plot is a collection of cliches: how many films have we seen where the family/wife/girl-friend of a correct detective/man is executed and he wants to revenge? Chales Bronson`s `Death Wish', Dolph Lundgren`s `The Punisher', Steven Seagal`s movie etc. The awful edition of the action scenes, with very short cuts, is very confused and hard to be seen, and the mysterious character ‘El Diablo' is not clearly resolved. Most of the characters are politically incorrect, using drugs, killing a bandit with bare hands and simulating a shooting etc. I was very disappointed with this movie. My vote is six.Title (Brazil): `O Vingador' ( `The Avenger')

Not Bad for a Modern Action Flick

posted on 06 Jun 2009

As someone who grew up watching the action films of the 80s---Chuck Norris, Stallone, Schwarzenegger and others---I fully expected A Man Apart to follow along the same lines. In some ways I ended up being pleasantly surprised, and in some ways I didn't.

The surprise came from the fact that Vin Diesel truly does have a fair amount of acting ability and showed good emotional range as the husband of a murdered wife who becomes obsessed with finding her killers. Vin does well as the strong, silent type with an explosive temper. The bad came from the fact that the basic plot of this film made very little sense, especially the big "who-dunnit" at the end. Was a big chunk of the movie edited out or what? When the main villian is revealed, it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. As we get further along in the movie, the writing lapses into the same old cliches and tired old lines that popped up in all those 80s movies I was talking about. The ending could have been ripped off from Cobra, Commando or one of those other flicks chock full of lame one-liners. I expected more from the ending, frankly, but I can't say that the rest of the movie was altogether bad. A Man Apart is worth viewing at least once.

good but not great!

I am a die hard Vin Diesal fan. I think I have seen almost all of his movies. I found that this movie was good enough to keep my attention to the end, but not one of his best. I beleive that he is attempting to make a small break from his usual action only flicks. Maybe he does not want to be stereotyped into only one type of role. Overall, the movie was alright, not great. Plus, he didn't even remove his shirt once!

Pretty good

Vin Diesel is MUCH better in this drama/action film then he was in his last action film, "XXX". His performance as a broken man who just lost his wife to drug dealer, & his violent crusade against said criminals, while not original in the least, does captivate you. As far as action movies go, this one can hang with the better of them. The action doesn't mix too well with the drama though...My Grade: B-Eye Candy: 2 topless women, 1 erotic dancer (Former Man Show Juggy, Paula Harrison) in see-through clothExtras: 7 Deleted Scenes (the first having 1 more topless chick, the 7th being an extended version of the aforementioned Juggy's dance) ; Trailers for (of all things)Run, Ronnie, Run & Highwaymen

Timothy Olyphant is the Reason to See this Film

posted on 08 May 2009

I believe this movie meets the needs of the people who are interested or curious about watching it. Decent acting mixed in with a lot of good ole' gunfights and explosions. The plot is good enough, and so is Vin Diesel in the leading role. Larenz Tate is solid as his childhood friend/co-worker on the force. The real reason to see this movie is for Timothy Olyphant's hilarious part as the drug-dealer/hair dresser "Hollywood Jack". Olyphant provides some great comic-relief. Did this movie win any awards, i doubt it, but that doesn't matter. Some movies are for guys who like movies, and well choreographed violence and explosions. Great to watch on DVD to pass a couple of hours. It is not as gritty as other revenge-oriented movies like "Man on Fire" but a gem in it's own way.

Diesels best work yet..A must see

What can you say...

this was a tired cliche ridden plot. It was your standard formula for action films from the 80s and early 90s. A tough cop suffers a loss and tackles the bad guys either by himself or with a few friends. He manages to get out of a lot of harry situations unhurt even though he should end up shot numerous times. And the ending was even more uninspired as our "hero" vists his wife's grave.FINAL VERDICT: Vin's husky voice is as hot as ever, but that is about the only good thing in this story. No one should bother watching this unless you think Vin Diesel is the greatest because you won't like it.

A great movie

This movie rocks. There is action, several twists and the performance of Diesel is award winning. It reminds me of traffic with a more street feel. If you doubt Gary Gray's movies then check this one out. He does a great job of controlling the actors, while still allowing enough room for them to adlib and dig deep into their characters. I highly recommend this movie.

GREAT ACTION FLICK!

I thoroughly enjoyed the story and action of the movie.
I still can't understand why there is such use of the "f" word - it sounds so much like an adolescent rebellion and un-educated persons who don't know how to use english.

And face it guys - bare bodies aren't all that exciting -- gee!
Attitude, presence, chrisma is what comes across to make a great character. Vin Diesel comes across well as does his partner.

Generally all around good action - gross language [in spots] great villians - great photography - well put together. Wouldn't change it, except............

Excellent but Complicated

Unconvincing but distracting revenge thriller

posted on 17 Mar 2009

Being from the "streets", Sean Vetter and his colleagues excel as DEA officers and pull off their biggest success by taking down a kingpin they have been pursuing for over seven years. However the blowback hits Sean hard as an attack on his house leaves his wife dead. Seeking revenge, Sean visits his target in prison, however it is soon clear that another player has entered the drug war and that revenge will not be the short term goal he originally thought. The set-up comes quickly and you can see it in the pretty actress cast as Mrs Vetter that what is coming is obvious – she is relaxed, sexy and gorgeous without a hint of real person about her, you'll not see a more likely character to be violently mourned than her. Sure enough it is not long before Vetter is off chasing drug dealers and kingpins in an attempt to get revenge for the death of his wife. And so the plot takes off in one sting that turns into violent mayhem after another after another. It is hard to really care too much but the macho posturing and solid thrills were just about enough to distract me.What I was waiting for was something more interesting behind all this action, something that would suggest Vetter was a human. Sadly the closest we got was a moment of regret after a spell of the red mist turned a set-up bad and left several dead in a totally botched job. This does rather take the narrative down to the level of the criminal without even suggesting that it is somehow wrong or ignoble and the conclusion to the film is too little too late and, in my opinion, somewhat of a cop-out.Vin Diesel is not really worth much of my time but he does have a solid screen presence; of course his performance is little more than a series of macho grunts formed into words by intensive ADR but physically it is hard to ignore him. Perhaps it is just as well the script offered him little in the way of depth as I have seen no real evidence that he would have known what to do with it anyway. Tate offers little alongside him while Olyphant, Silva and others do so-so jobs around the edges. However this is not really a film to come to for performances and there isn't much in the way of character here. Gray can make it all look professional though and in fairness he was never going to be the person that anyone comes to with a morally complex revenge-driven character.Overall then this is a distracting enough thriller that provides glossy and violent action in a predictable narrative. It really could have used even a hint of complexity or depth but instead it embraces the superficial and runs with it. Not as bad as I feared it might be but certainly nothing more than I expected.

A great movie, despite all of the negative reviews...

Say what you want to about Vin Diesel, but he's a great actor in my opinion. Those of you that bash him like there is no tomorrow must be looking for Meryl Streep (gag) or someone with that acting ability. He plays action type roles and he does so in a well, menacing manner. What do you expect him to act like, a wuss? If you want to talk about bad actors, try Fred Prinze Jr., not Vinnie Mack. This movie had everything I look for in movies. Action, drama, emotions, spills, thrills, I mean, what more could one ask for? With sidekick Larenz Tate (Menace 2 Society) how could this movie rate a 5.1 or 5.2? Yet, crappola movies like Being John Malkovich, Royal Tenenbaums, etc.. can rate so highly. Don't believe all of the nay sayers. If you like good acting, action and a kick #*( movie, then watch A Man Apart and you won't be disappointed. (Unless you're aged 25-75) and are male. They tend to not want to admit that Vin's a decent actor. Watch Pitch Black, Boiler Room, Knockaround Guys and tell me he's a bad actor. Get a life, Vin bashers. This coming from a 25 year old guy, yes I like him. Get over it!!!!

I was Surprised

I waited to see this movie b/c I was sure that I would be disappointed and thought the plot was much like Hard to Kill (Steven Segal). I was surprised that I actually liked this movie. The plot was so so and it almost caught me off guard. The acting was not great but for Vin it wasn't bad. The action kept me watching and it was not as slow as I thought it would be.
All in all this was a pretty good watch that I would not mind watching again someday.
