Finally a decent flick
posted on 30 Aug 2009The movie is a thriller, drama, and comedy all in one. Yes the first half was dragging but Timothy Olyphant did an amazing job portraying his character. Steve Zahn and Mila were great and the other two were completely wasted in the movie. Didn't expect the movie to turn out the way it did, but when i think about the movie in its entirety it was definitely worth the watch.Basically I wasn't upset I saw this movie in the theaters and also I wasn't bored at all. So I would recommend this movie to all my friends I don't care if they watch it at home or in the theaters it won't matter.
A Perfect Getaway
posted on 30 Aug 2009A Perfect Getaway is the kind of romp that plays on people's fears of having too much of a good time away from the mundane but at least controllable confines of an American city. Milla Jovovich and Steve Zahn are honeymoon couple, Cydney and Cliff, who decide to hike eleven miles to a remote beach. Along the way they meet another couple, Cleo (Chris Hemsworth) and Kale (Marley Shelton), and traveler's Nick (Timothy Olyplant) and Gina (Kiele Sanchez). Rumor has it that a couple murdered a pair of honeymooners in Honolulu and are still at large around the islands. Director-writer David Twohy (The Chronicles of Riddick, Pitch Black) provides the kind of fireside spooky story that people love plus a liberal amount of twists and red herrings to warrant a sequel.http://www.examiner.com/x-2744-Inside-Hollywood-Examiner
A decent action-chiller
posted on 28 Aug 2009Whodunits are notoriously hard to film. On paper, they can work well, because the non-dialogue parts can spread enough time between the scenes to distance the amount of time between the twists, which makes the red herrings seem less obvious. The problem with translating this kind of a story to film is that these passages are represented with images, and, as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. So here is "A Perfect Getaway," written and directed by David Twohy, a filmmaker I didn't care for after seeing "Pitch Black" and parts of its sequel. I am however, beginning to reassess my position after seeing this film. It's a whodunit, but it keeps you guessing all they way. For the most part, it works.Cliff (Steve Zahn) and Cydney (Milla Jovovich) are honeymooning in Hawaii, and plan to take a three-day trip to a coveted beach on one of the islands. Along the way, they run into two other couples, the creepy Kale (Chris Hemsworth) and Cleo (Marley Shelton) and the nice Nick (Timothy Olymphant) and Gina (Kiele Sanchez). Along the way, Cliff and Cydney hear of a couple who is murdering newlyweds on one of the islands. And they might be traveling with them. The acting is great. Steve Zahn is known mainly for his comedic performances, but this isn't is first foray into the genre (he was opposite Paul Walker and Leelee Sobieski in "Joy Ride." He's effective playing it straight, although the role could have been better cast. Milla Jovovich is also good as the sunny Cydney, though she has made a career out of being in horror movies. Chris Hemsworth is menacing as Kale. He's intimidating, but he allows the film to keep its balance. Marley Shelton is unrecognizable as Cleo, Kale's squeeze. Her sunny disposition makes Kale's character (and thus hers) even more mysterious. Timothy Olymphant continues to impress as Nick, the gung-ho ex-military guy who may be a little too nice for comfort. Same goes for Kiele Sanchez, who plays his girlfriend. However, the lion's share of the credit has to go to David Twohy. I wasn't expecting a bad movie, but I was surprised at how good it is, ESPECIALLY for an August release (where studios dump the movies that they don't have any hope for). Twohy is able to keep a sense of dread and suspense present throughout the film, something that is rare these days. He is also great at sleight-of-hand. He presents the clues and characters just so, so we never are really sure of anything. And the big twist is unexpected.Unfortunately, that's where the big problem is. His handling of this scene is not good. It takes too long and it gives more information than is needed, which makes it confusing. But the film quickly recovers, and it is suspenseful to the end (though one question is left unresolved).Although it doesn't hold up very well once the credits begin to roll, it's a good chiller until then. And really, that's all that matters.
Very enjoyable fun suspense thriller
posted on 28 Aug 2009I loved this movie - Kauai is my favorite Hawaiian island and not all, but quite a bit of this movie, was filmed there. So the scenery is beautiful, the cast, plot and dialogue are all very good and the whole is a very enjoyable 100 minutes.I actually guessed the twist, but that was only because I had read in reviews that there was a huge twist two-thirds of the way through, and that was the most obvious "huge" one - maybe in future I shouldn't read reviews before seeing this kind of movie! Either way it didn't spoil my enjoyment - I think the movie is underrated by most reviewers, I really don't know what people expect, some of them over-analyzing it too much.I would recommend watching this film to anyone.
If you're a fan of the genre, you'll be disappointed (indirect spoiler reference)
posted on 28 Aug 2009I found this "thriller" to be pretty mundane...the only spoiler I'll offer is that I knew the killer within the first several minutes of the movie. From there it was just looking for the "clues" they'd drop to reveal their "surprise ending".There are a couple of good sight gags (nearing stylized violence) and the typical quick things that will scare those who aren't fans of the genre. It's fairly formulaic and if you're paying attention, the director almost goes out of his way to drop hints. The acting is pretty well done, although some of the characters are written to be pretty one-dimensional, so you don't know what else the actors might have been able to do with the part. The only thing that really makes this film stand out is the scenery: Hawaii really is the most beautiful of the 50 states. That said, for the cost of admission you can rent several travel videos that will give you lots more and probably will be more entertaining. Bottom line, you can save this one for the DVD rental, at least IMHO.
Clever twisty-turny suspenser with exceptionally acted ensemble
posted on 28 Aug 2009A PERFECT GETAWAY (2009) *** Steve Zahn, Timothy Olyphant, Milla Jovovich, Kiele Sanchez, Marley Shelton, Chris Hemsworth. Decent thriller with newlyweds Zahn & Jovovich in high danger on their honeymoon in Hawaii where they learn a murdering couple are on the loose and perhaps closer than they think after encountering two distinctly off-beat, and vaguely threatening, other couples en route to their hike in the island wilds. Written and directed with clever (perhaps too clever for its own good) élan by David Twohy, the twisty-turny plottings are knotty enough for the average viewer, but for those in the know by act two you'll figure out the turn-of-the-screw headings. Well-acted by the young ensemble, the film works on its own merits of a crackerjack popcorn suspenser.
Good, entertaining thriller
posted on 28 Aug 2009I liked it. You had to watch carefully, especially the flashbacks, to get the whole twist of the plot but when you do it's great. The screenplay is very well written for the most part; it takes a while to get down to business but you won't mind waiting. I think the fact that its only 97 minutes is a great boost, it's short but feels like a much longer movie. It tells its story in its own good time but doesn't drag.Unlike most films like it, this one has very solid performances by the main players, very. Cinematography is top-notch, VERY important in this type of movie... and the scenery is very busy on that tropical island. All put to good use, great direction as well. If you're looking to go to the movies one night, and this is playing, see it - a nice ride on a summer night for sure and satisfying to any film lover. Good job.
Good, but not perfect!
posted on 28 Aug 2009David Twohy has an unusual collection of films to his name. The Chronicles of Riddick is perhaps his biggest blockbuster, but let us not forget Pitch Black, the space age film released back in the millennium! Well those films worked pretty well on certain levels, but some left feeling disappointed. Twohy is back this year with A Perfect Getaway. This isn't a film for the young, or the action cravers; it starts out slow, perhaps intolerably slow for some. For a horror/thriller it goes about character development like nothing I have ever seen. The acting from all corners is excellent and the cinematography is absolutely wonderful, showcasing all Hawaii has to offer it's tourists; though in some parts, I felt I was watching an advertisement for the Islands. The final half of the film really packs up the momentum, definitely making up for a dreary first act. The final twist wasn't outright obvious, and worked well. All in all, it's a good stab at the genre, and there aren't many who have done it better.
A Predictable Yet Entertaining Thriller.
posted on 26 Aug 2009A couple on their honeymoon go to Hawaii and meet up with another couple along the way. They discover that there is another couple killing people on the island and they suspect each other, among others. Who is the real killer? This film suffers from the same fate Hide and Seek had, the trailer gives away the ending. Maybe not bluntly, but if you know how these films work, you know how the film will end. Going into this film, I had a pretty good idea, from the trailer, how this one was going to end. I ended up being right, but I still enjoyed the film and what it had to offer. Knowing the ending makes it a bit more interesting because you can look at things from different angles, as opposed to someone who may have no clue at all. Despite the predictable ending this film has, it has more to offer. The cast consists of funny man Steve Zahn, who has been stepping out of his usual comedic roles and taking on more things these days, and Milla Jovovich as the honeymoon couple. He is a screen writer, she is just happy to be on her honeymoon. We don't get much else from her, besides one scene in which she has a conversation about her past. Zahn does a good job playing the nerdy role. I said in another review he couldn't carry a film (Strange Wilderness) yet here is seems like the type of person who can. Only time will tell, I hope he takes on more than just comedic roles though.Timothy Olyphant and Kiele Sanchez (Nikki from Lost) are the second couple. He is some kind of ex-marine type guy, who is a man's man, boar killing and all. She comes off as a free spirited chick, who is able to match her significant other. There is a third couple, who pop in and out of the film as the scary duo. They serve their purpose and leave, nothing more to really say about them. The director, David Twohy tries his hand at something other than sci/f. His resume includes an underrated flick The Arrival and Vin Diesel vehicles Pitch Black & The Chronicles of Riddick. Glad to see him trying his hand at new stuff and it works. The film is entertaining and thrilling, two key things needed in this type of flick. It has it's by the numbers moments, every film like this does, but in sea of films like these, this one isn't bad.I wish they film did play up the, which couple are the killers, a little more. It could have been a good mystery, but again, if you pay attention enough, you'll guess who's who early on. The film throws clues as to who the killers are left right and centre. Some people might not like how the film tries to fool it's audience and near the end it does shift it's focus, which seemed odd, yet needed. Can I recommend A Perfect Getaway? Sure, for the people who might be interested that is. If you know this type of film is not for you, keep on walking. If you're a little bit interested, give it a look.
A silly thriller with an extremely dumb twist in the tale.
posted on 26 Aug 2009This is not a good movie. It's stupid. The big twist is just dumb. It makes you lose what little empathy you may have built up towards the main characters. It does not work at all. If you back-track everything that the characters have done, then their ultimate changes in character just do not convince in the slightest. In the Charlie Kaufman-penned Adaptation, there is a rather hilarious sub-plot, in which, Kaufman's twin brother is writing a screenplay about a serial killer who turns out to be the split personality of the detective who is hunting him. It brilliantly highlights the dumb-ass nature of some Hollywood screen writers, with their constant need to come up with ever more elaborate twists to confound the audience, no matter how ridiculously implausible they may be. Clearly, the makers of this film have not seen Adaptation, or if they have they just didn't get it.The film isn't a total washout. There are some good performances. Steve Zahn is always great value for money, even when he's in dross like this. And I would rather sit through this than another Saw movie. But it doesn't stop me wandering why this kind of nonsense is repeatedly the best that some major Hollywood studios have to offer.
One Twisted Tale of Deceit!
posted on 26 Aug 2009Definitely a very satisfactory film for the thriller fans! It s thoughtfully crafted where characters cleverly lead or mislead the audience a nerve-wrecking experience, without the tiresome clichés, seen over and over in so many contemporary horror flicks and thrillers. Yep, it's not the typical formulaic and predictable horror flick. This film cleverly combines an appropriate and nicely proportioned mix of the genres of drama, thriller, horror, mystery and action to keep the story solid and interesting to follow Even romance has not been excluded, subtly being molded into the story to offer an appeal that's not overwhelmingly silly or pretentiously absurd. On screen chemistry is well established in this film. The gory scenes are not over extended or become repetitively trashy and cheap.I salute every actor for his/her performance. Each brings perfect timing to his/her role in the every event and scene, allowing a nice suspenseful flow to the story. The characters are indeed interesting to watch, providing the viewers time to analyze them, despite the fast-paced adrenaline rushes the film provides. There is not a single moment that any of the actors has failed to hold my attention. Steve Zahn's character will not be easily forgotten! The plot-twists are smartly contrived to pump up shock, surprise, and awe. Yes, there is a couple of brief knee-jolting experiences, but I'm frankly glad Writer/Director David Twohy has not depended on the continuous use of knee-jolting ploys to fill up his film's story for the lack of creative story-telling. Indeed, he allows his story's characters to develop in phenomenal ways, from frame to frame, to bring suspense, thrill awe and fear. The dialog is sharp, adding intensity to the story and for misleading the audience till the exposure of the 'who dun it.' Overall, a pretty smart mystery-thriller that should satisfy those loving a tale with a strong and unsuspecting twist.
Good, but honestly it doesn't offer anything amazing.
posted on 26 Aug 2009"A Perfect Getaway" is a movie that not only disappointed me with the entertainment they could have provided, but their was just overall SO much more they could have done to make it better. Anyways before I go into full detail let me say this, if you go to see this movie don't go in with high expectations. Okay well as most of you know it is about this couple(Steve Z. and Mila J.) who, while honeymooning in Hawaii encounter two other couples who they suspect of being responsible for a murder that happened near where they're at. Doesn't sound to ENTIRLEY original does it? Though one must admit at least it's not a slasher movie, so for that props to A Perfect Getaway. However although it seems original, it really isn't. Okay note I didn't go in to this movie with the lowest of expectations, but instead good. The movie seemed like the kind of thriller, not horror, movie I might would enjoy. Unfortunately as much as "A Perfect Getaway" wanted to be that cool, scary, entertaining, thrilling, and suspenseful thriller to keep you constantly guessing, it really isn't. About the film, although the main couple (Mila & Steve) were original and well conceived, they really just arn't THAT likable. I mean I didn't really care about them, but was instead more interested in the other couple (played greatly by Timothy Olyphant and Kiele Sanchez), than the main. I mean the main couple is just so faceless and so uninteresting. Next it tried way to hard to try and provide us with enough stuff keep us watching, and honestly I just got so fed up with it, that I wasn't to in to the movie. Plus it gets boring. Also although Steve Zahn is a good actor he gives a really bad performance, and he's just so annoying, so faceless, so unoriginal, that I was hoping he would die in the most painful way imaginable! Also was the third couple (played very dryly by Chris Hemsworth and Marley Shelton) really entirely necessary? I mean nobody really liked them, or cared about them, and even the film hated them for they just disappear and re-appear only to be captured and never seen or heard of again. I mean yes I was glad they did disappear cause I hated them, but still give us a reason to want to see them, or at least make a better effort. Next was the so called twist, I didn't mind that Mila and Steve's character were the bad guys, it just it was VERY predictable. For example the other two couples were given many reasons as to who may be the killers, so much so that it's like if Mila and Steve wern't the killers but instead the other couples nobody would really be like "Oh my gosh, I never saw that coming!" So in result of this it was no shock at all that Mila and Steve were the killers. Plus I never bought Steve Zahn being a killer for one minute. Last is just overall the film is just really annoying at times, and kind of boring, and dull. However I though it was very well directed, and I liked some of the characters. Plus I really like the ending and I liked how you took a liking to Timothy Olyphant and Kiele Sanchez's characters. Overall "A Perfect Getaway" is really for those who don't like scary movies, if you're a fan of horror/thrillers like me than you would be better off skipping "A Perfect Getaway" because as much as it wants to be something special, it just isn't.
Dismiss the first half of the movie
posted on 24 Aug 2009You read the title right. Dismiss the first half of the movie. It's slow and COMPLETELY goes against logic with what's finally unveiled later on, plot-wise. Nearly everything that the main characters do in the first 45 min to an hour doesn't make any sense whatsoever later on in the final 35 minutes. The cinematography was gorgeous, and the film satisfies on some levels, I suppose, but I like some consistency with my characters. The acting was decent; there were no noticeable flaws there. They worked fine with the script they were given. But when the story fails on building logical characters, it's difficult for the performers to flesh out their characters to any great extent. And the plot device is cheapened by the lack of development of the script. Unfortunately, this one doesn't have any cohesiveness, and for that it earns a less than stellar 5 from me.
Absurdly Entertaining
posted on 24 Aug 2009One of the most unadulterated entertainment experiences I've had in the theater in a while. It felt as though the writing which was sometimes clever, charming, and hilarious, became purposefully terrible... The well crafted 'badness' of the movie is what makes it so damn good.I laughed more than I do at most comedies - but because it was SO designed it didn't feel like I was laughing AT a b-movie it felt more like the film itself was making hilarious and charming self deprecating jokes. The humor of which contrasted the 'thriller' elements making them more exciting than they would be in a standard flick.Overall I was totally shocked by how much I enjoyed this movie. There are of course other 'issues' with this movie, and some cutting room stuff I think could have improved some scenes - but it's fantastic unabashed entertainment. This movie knows what it is and is SO immensely self-aware it really stands out on it's own and is well worth your time.
Good Thriller with Questionable Twists
posted on 24 Aug 2009Perfect Getaway, A (2009) *** (out of 4)The "old dark house" genre was made famous back in the silent days as we'd get a group of people in one house with the idea that one of them is a killer. That basic idea continues with this film, although instead of a house we're treated the beautiful locations of Hawaii. A newlywed couple (Steve Zahn, Milla Jovovich) are on their honeymoon in Hawaii and decide to go on an eleven mile hike. Half way through the hike they learn that another newlywed couple were butchered. The film then has our couple meeting two other couples (Timothy Olyphant/Kiele Sanchez, Marley Shelton, Chris Hemsworth) with the possibility that one of them are the murderers. This 97-minute movie is pure buildup for the final ten minutes when the twist is revealed. I certainly won't reveal the twist but I must say I was somewhat letdown by it but not enough to really enjoy the film. This is the type of movie that gives you a rather simple idea and then works every little inch out of it and in the end we're left with a pretty tense little thriller that is sadly being marketed as a horror movie, which might keep some people away. The film benefits from the great locations, terrific acting and some nice direction. All six leads do a terrific job and it was great seeing someone like Zahn get the leading role. He's basically played supporting roles most of his career but he has no problem carrying the film here. He and Jovovich have great chemistry together and work well with the other cast members. Olyphant clearly steals the film as the ex-soldier who is hiding a few secrets of his own. Another very positive thing about this film is that the majority of it takes place during the daylight so there's nothing jumping out of the shadows at night. I think it's brave to try and build suspense during the day but the director pulls it off perfectly. The 2.35:1 aspect ratio picks up the entire beauty of the island, which really becomes a character all by itself. The film is up for a lot of debate over the twists and turns it takes, which is good. Discussion never hurts a movie and I'm sure people will be discussing what happens here. I personally found it to be a cheat but a lot of thrillers do this. No matter how one feels about the twists there's really no denying that there's still a lot of fun and tension building up to the final moments.
A perfect suspense film!
posted on 24 Aug 20092009 will not be the greatest year for many of us, but I think 2009 will be remembered for producing many good/great films. Seems many old school Hollywood execs, directors, producers have been taken out to pasture, thus allowing fresh young blood to create films that we want to see these days. (Snakes on a Plane not included).I won't go into the details of this movie, but let's just say it is not predictable. This movie keeps you in suspense throughout. A well-crafted yet simple plot should entertain all.I don't think the Hawaii Tourist Bureau will appreciate this movie at all. The scenery is beautiful, but I don't know if I'll do much hiking in remote areas of the U.S. anymore. If you see this movie, you won't be disappointed.
Predictable
posted on 24 Aug 2009This movie was a let down. Someone is murdering couples in Hawaii, so we are presented with at least three couples to chose from. In the writer/directors effort to keep us guessing who the bad guys are, when it's finally revealed, I didn't feel sympathetic for the victims. The cast was great, the movie was well acted and the locations were beautiful, but the movie just doesn't deliver. The black and white scenes that serve as a reveal were not sufficient to hold my interest. From that part, the movie went the way I had expected, so it was anti-climactic when it got to the big action scene. If all of the characters were equally likable, it would have been a better movie, but the bids at misdirection ruined it for me.
A good summer flick.
posted on 22 Aug 2009A good summer flick. I believe the one that gets you is the one you do not see coming. The film follows this thesis exactly. Who is the murder? The film keeps you guessing. Good acting and directing. I believe the movie plays on peoples assumptions, and how others use assumptions for their advantage. The story's climax is great. The aftermath affirms the story's theme about assumptions of who is the nice couple. I give A perfect Getaway a seven out of ten. I missed the first five minutes of the movie and possibly the film could even be better. Not a bad movie, but I figured out the plot and ruined it for my wife. How often are we tricked by someone who plays on our assumptions.
the filmic equivalent of a decent beach-reading book
posted on 22 Aug 2009One of the things you'll read about in the reviews of A Perfect Getaway, if you're the kind of guy or gal who does that sort of thing, is that there's quite a TWIST (in caps) that happens at about 2/3 of the way into the movie. I didn't see the twist quite coming, though thinking back there were a few clever touches, some a little subtle (i.e. a simple quick cutaway to a fidgeting with a ring on a finger, if that doesn't spoil too much), but it's something that goes on a little too long in explaining, and becomes a little too ludicrous to take really seriously (the meth is the thing that made it stupid for me, or just not explicable). And yet, after this twist comes around, the movie becomes a guilty pleasure, a bad-ass action movie with lots of running around (and with crazy frame changes!) and shooting and jumping and slashing of hands and fingers... for twenty minutes. Before this happens, we're fooled into believing this will be a thriller with characters to care about and even with their quirks or suspicions as "normal" people, and it's fairly well acted to boot. Hell, we even get one of Milla Jovovich's best performances, maybe the one where she actually has to do real *acting* as opposed to Resident Evil posing, since her films with Luc Besson. It's also lots of fun watching Timothy Olyphant as a self-proclaimed 'G-Damn American Jedi' who, according to himself and his Mississippi woman 'Can't be killed'. And it's beautifully shot in Hawaii, with the only suspicion to have here is that the crew of Lost had to battle for gorgeous locations.A Perfect Getaway is made by a confident professional (David Twohy) and acted by some really good actors, and it doesn't entirely work from start to finish. But there's some really terrific scenes and a BANG of a third act. You don't have to rush to see it, but I dare you to change the channel when it comes to cable.

Good thriller. Keeps you guessing.
posted on 30 Aug 2009This is a good movie. However, it will probably not get a fair shot by most. The reason is the way the story is structured in which apparently nothing happens in the first 45 minutes. For today's average 18-34 audience this is almost intolerable as they are now conditioned to expect cheap CGI thrills and impossibly huge explosions in the first two minutes of the film (not necessarily a bad thing BTW). What underrated Director/Writer David Towhy is doing is actually putting your brain to work during the first two acts of the movie, all the while enjoying some incredible visuals of the Hawaiian tropical rain forest. Towhy concentrates on subtle character development. The acting is good. Mila Jovovich and Timothy Oliphant are the two that carry the film throughout. All in all I have to say that Towhy put out a fairly plausible story here with none of the CGI generated hyperbole that we see so much of nowadays.
