I personally loved this ;-)
posted on 13 Dec 2008I often go back to watching this movie every now and then because I really do like it. It's not Oscar material for sure, but it's good and enjoyable and almost anything that Martin Lawrence is in, is great. He's funny and yet in this, you can see he's got a more serious side too. I do agree with some other reviewers that it is a semi cross between Fatal Attraction and Boomerang. There are moments of comedy and moments of insanity with the female lead. Darnell meets Brandi outside his club, Chocolate City, and she looks like she has it all. Limo driver, fine crib in Malibu, good paying job, but that's only the surface.
He can't say he wasn't warned. His mother (Della Reese) said near the start that there is a fine line between love and hate, and also Brandi (Lynn Whitfield) told Darnell that it wouldn't be a good thing if she were hurt and she also told him in bed for their first time, that she'd killed her husband because he'd been abusive. He should have heard warning bells then, but didn't.
I love watching this; it's funny in parts and also fun watching Brandi go off the deep end. I love the music throughout the movie and if you are a fan of Black cinema, then check it out. It's an old favourite of mine and really enjoy it.
This movie is about a woman who's heart broken by a man who harasses her into seeing him. The woman tries to kill the man and gets caught
posted on 28 Jun 2008A THIN LINE BETWEEN LOVE AND HATE is a movie that'll never make a person want to lie to someone again. This movie made me express every emotion that a person could show except crying.I loved the cast and the characters that they played and I also think that they should consider making a part 2 to this movie. My favorite cast member was Lynn Whitfield because of how strongly she played the character "Brandi Web". Martin Lawrence Did an Awesome Job Being "Darnel Write," He was the Martin Lawrence that everyone knows and loves.Bobby Brown,Regina King and all the other cast members also did a great job to make this movie what it is.
PLEASE!
posted on 21 Aug 2007How this piece of drivel ever got the greenlight is totally beyond me! An embarassment from start to finish, "Thin Line.." is a slow moving, poorly directed, over-acted and ridiculously written attempt at making a cautionary tale of watching who's heart you toy with. A total waste of time, black talent and film!
Thin Line Between Love and Hate, A ('96)
posted on 24 Nov 2006A Thin Line Between Love and Hate is a comedy/drama that revolves around a "player" played by Martin Lawrence who is looking for a special woman to call his own. During his search, he gets involve with a young lady who gives him more than he can bargain for (played by the very voluptuous Whitfield). The acting is sub-par but the story brings a very good twist on an over-told story. This film reminds me of "Fatal Attraction" in many ways. It is a decent film that is slept on because of the acting. I have "Thin Line" in my collection and rated it a 7/10. Pretty good if you're not expecting Oscar caliber performances and A-level talent. A pretty good pick up if it is on sale.Peace... Buggieblade
Comedy with a surprisingly evil and sinister twist.
posted on 12 Nov 2006A Thin Line Between Love And Hate is a very solid movie production job from Martin Lawrence. The film provides a nice mix of drama and comedy. The story line revolves around Darnell (Martin Lawrence) Brandi (Lynn Whitfield) and Mia (Regina King). Darnell is a ladies man who thinks he says all the right things to the ladies. He runs across Brandi and makes a bet with his buddy Tee (Bobby Brown) that he would have sex with her once he gets to know her. Eventually he gets his chance and hits paydirt with Brandi sexually. Brandi was hurt before by her cheating husband and holds brutal grudges for "womanizing" men (She killed her ex husband after finding him in bed with another women) As her relationship with Darnell develops she warns him that she is not the type of woman to be hurt and taken advantage of. The Producer does a good job of bringing along Darnel's rekindling relationship with ex flame Mia. Somehow you feel that Darnel and Mia's future relationship holds promise despite Darnel's flirtatious ways. Some of the things that happen to Darnel because of his womanizing ways you feel are justified but Brandi is out for serious revenge. Brandi inflicts injury to herself and convinces police that Darnel is the perpetrator, she leaves his Truck on bricks outside of a police station, she stops at nothing. Darnel calls off his relationship with Mia due to threats by Brandi that she would hurt Mia. Determined to settle the score once and for all he goes to Brandi beautiful estate overlooking the Pacific....> Thin Line Between Love And Hate was much better than I thought it would be. The movie definitely is funny but also provides plenty of drama. Lynn Whitfield is ever convincing in her role as Brandi, her piercing eyes slamming a knife down wickedly into her birthday cake is a scene worth remembering. What adds greatly to the movie is the fact that everything is centered around a nightclub which adds a certain feel and environment. This is a movie that is better than you would think. A definite thumbs up 8/10 on the scale.
Hilarious, witty, sexy, suspenseful, and TOTALLY BEAUTIFUL!
posted on 24 Jun 2006In my opinion, A THIN LINE BETWEEN LOVE AND HATE is a hilarious, witty, sexy, suspenseful, and TOTALLY BEAUTIFUL movie. It is also one of the best Martin Lawrence films I have ever seen. I thought that Martin (Lawrence) and Lynn (Whitfield) lit up the screen as Darnell Wright and Brandi Web. One of my favorite quotes of this movie is, "You put your hands on the wrong woman." That REALLY made me feel good and smile. But the part that REALLY made me feel good and smile was when Brandi (Lynn Whitfield) got even with Darnell (Martin Lawrence) at her home towards the end. Also, I thought that Erica (Malinda Williams) looked VERY beautiful in her prom dress -- Especially with the way she had had her hair done. That sure brings back memories for me. In conclusion, to anyone who's a fan of Martin Lawrence, I recommend this movie. You're in for a LOT of laughs and thrills, so, go out there, rent it or buy it, kick back with a friend, and watch it.
When a woman's fed up
posted on 01 May 2006I hadn't seen this movie in 10 years until this past weekend when it resurfaced on TV -- whew!!! what a welcomed blast from the past.
Martin Lawrence was still in his heyday as a comedian in this movie's 1996 release.
A sober Bobby Brown delivers an entertaining performance as Martin's pseudo sidekick, Regina King plays a believable "it girl" role and Lynn Whitfield totally delivers an Oscar nomination-worthy performance as a woman scorned and determined to make her man pay for all the heartache that comes from lies and deception.
This is one of those twist-of-fate movies for playaz who manipulate relationships just to "get some" and move on.
The story is easy to follow.
There's tons of subtle but gutbustingly funny scenes.
The movie moves along at a great pace -- you won't go to sleep on this!
For anyone -- male or female -- who's ever had an "adventure in dating" with a nut you later question why you ever dated, this movie's for you.
As the movie's theme song says, "The sweetest woman in the world could (also) be the meanest woman in the world/Did you make her that way?"
You're just gonna have to watch this movie to "get it."
Why do some men act like dogs when they see something they want?
posted on 08 Dec 2005You don't have to like Martin Lawrence to let this movie have an impact on you. i know it's a comedy but when i turned off my DVD player i made me think of when i was wild and stupid. I'd do anything to get a girl i liked into my bed. I even used those forbidden 3 words. They are like a magic key, effective for instant access but oh so dangerous. Fatal attraction and Boomerang came into my mind when i saw this movie. Martin Lawrence acts like he usually does and Lynn Whitfield was great. I actually believe he's like that in real life too.Others have commented on the realism of having a woman like Whitfield going with a smooth low life like the character displayed by Martin. but i think these people don't know the first thing about "hitting" on girls. (excuse the term). Guys that try first and persevere usually get their women. I you have'n seen it, enjoy the movie. I did.
A great mixure of Comedy, Drama, and Romance
posted on 30 Oct 2005I think this movie is great. This shows that Martin Lawrence can make in thing funny. I liked this movie, and I recommend this movie to any Martin Lawrence fan, and if not a fan go see this movie and you will be. I give this movie an 8/10.
This movie does have its moments
posted on 07 Mar 2005This movie is sort of mess and it doesn't get any better with repetitive viewing. The screenplay is credited to four writers, and its unevenness argues that none of them were on the same wavelength. Subplots start but never finish, characters come and go, and even the main storyline can't decide whether it wants to be a comedy, a morality play, or a thriller. Lead actor Martin Lawrence (in his directorial debut) has a degree of screen presence, but not even his charisma can rescue this clichéd film from sliding into oblivion.
Darnell (Lawrence) is the kind of character who it's easy to dislike. He's a classic womanizer -- the kind of man who keeps a stream of girlfriends waiting at the other end of the phone for his call. For Darnell, the harder a woman is to get, the more she entices him. So when Brandi (Lynn Whitfield), a wealthy real estate agent, turns her nose up at his come-ons, Darnell goes after her with the tenacity of a pit bull. Eventually, he succeeds, but he gets more than he bargained for. When he tries to break things off with Brandi to prove his affection for the high school sweetheart who has come back to town (Regina King), he discovers that Brandi isn't willing to let him go. She'll try anything, including bodily harm, to keep him.
Mix Eddie Murphy's `Boomerang' with `Fatal Attraction,' and you get an idea how confused this movie can get. Although Lawrence, who's wearing half-a-dozen hats for this film (Executive Producer, Music Supervisor, Story, Screenplay, Director, and Star), includes a few humorous scenes, there's not enough comedy to leaven the film's slower portions. The dreary setup takes forever, the thriller elements are disappointingly pedestrian, and the climax is formulaic. There is the core of an interesting story here -- what happens when a lothario becomes a victim -- but Lawrence never does more with this plot strand than superficially trace it. There should be a lot transpiring on a psychological level, but the script is content with unbelievable transformations and simple labels. Darnell is the repentant sinner and Brandi is the psycho scorned woman. The film's message -- don't say you love someone unless you mean it -- doesn't have any resonance because, aside from a few cuts and bruises, Darnell never pays a real price for his actions. The ending doesn't have the guts to demand a meaningful sacrifice.
`A Thin Line Between Love and Hate' boasts several solid performances. Lawrence is energetic, but never so completely out-of-control that he loses the audience the way Jim Carrey does. Lynn Whitfield occasionally manages to bring hints of humanity to Brandi (the almost- invisible tear on her cheek when Darnell breaks off the relationship is a nice touch). Regina King and Della Reese (as Darnell's mother) are effective in supporting roles. With a more clear notion of what it was trying to do and a shorter, tighter script, this movie could have been worthwhile as a comedy or a thriller, although doubtfully as both.

Thin line Between Love and Hate
posted on 16 Nov 2003A cross between Lawrence humor and Hitchcock suspence. Martin plays the "playa" and uses his comedic style to provide the humor. This time there is less of the absurbed humor than in some of his previous movies. The Hithcock suspense is Lynne Whitfield's character. How many ways will she make the man pay and in the end to what degree does the playa learn his lesson. For the Martin Lawrence fan there is no disappointment. Maybe his best to date.

Love means never having to say, "I'm Psycho..."
posted on 02 Feb 2009...one day a bright young playa decides to go for the creme de la creme. An older lady with a little more style and a little more $ than the average club hopper. But see, the playa's kinda hung up on the lady who left him behind for the armed forces. Soldier girl shows up right in the middle of his playa antics with the classy dame and he finds out it ain't easy pulling the plug. That's where the cheese hits the fan. Martin's prat falls in response to Lynn Whitfield's evil woman scorned, starts out a bit funny, then it gets serious. Way too serious. Like, downright too real. As the adage goes, "You catch more flies with honey...", the powers that be here should have kept the film comedic. It would be a sought after video now, if it had been kept comedic.
