A Complete Farce In Nearly Every Sense
posted on 31 Aug 2009Though I consider the first "Ace Ventura" film to be perhaps my favorite comedy of all-time, "When Nature Calls" is nothing more than a shame to both the legacy of the first film and to Jim Carrey's career.
Likely rushed to the theaters (only a year after part one) due to the success of the first movie, "Ace 2" never even comes close to capturing the pure hilarity of the first effort, and (on its own merit) isn't even that funny overall. Whereas in the first go-round Carrey was able to do his crazy facial reactions and physical comedy that made him a household name, in this film (because of the very poor quality of jokes/gags) he completely overreacts to every situation. I never thought I would say that Carrey could overreact to anything, but he actually does go WAY too far time after time after time.
Though the first 10-20 minutes of "When Nature Calls" are moderately funny, from there the movie absolutely tanks. The first time I watched it, I actually fell asleep about 20 minutes in, as the jokes/Carrey were no longer holding my interest whatsoever.
Thus, I would not wish this film on anyone. If you want more of Carrey's best performances, stay away from it at all costs, as it will leave you wondering how/why he would even sign off on the script.
Miles Better Than The First
posted on 31 Aug 2009Jim Carrey is a man who accentuates physical comedy and other than "The Mask", no film has better utilised his talents both as an actor and a comedian. The crazy hair, quirky one liners and over the top facial expressions are pulled together from all his comedic experiences to delight audiences by bringing this fantastic character alive. I was never crazy over the first film. It was something that I just did not enjoy on the same level as most others did; so a sequel for me was bound to be much of the same, but I was very wrong indeed.
The story starts off as a parody of Cliffhanger where Ace is trying to save a stranded Racoon, but accidentally loses grip allowing the Racoon to plunge to its death. A few years later we encounter explorer Fulton Greenwall (Ian McNeice) employing the services of Ace to find a sacred white bat of the ancient Wachati and Wachootoo Tribes to prevent them going to war. His employer is the remarkably snooty and suspicious Vincent Cadby (Simon Callow) and the ancient bat is called Shikaka which has the tribe members bowing at every mention of the name(you can imagine the fun Ace has with these two.)
Character definition isn't something you would really associate with comedies of this kind, but the characterisation is something very important that helps drive the plot along. The character of Cadby is transparent from the start, but is defined to a point that you don't trust him from the beginning and that's the way it should be. He's the main protagonist and Callow does a good job of making sure you know who's the slimey one in this film. Carrey is obviously brilliant in his role reprisal of Ventura and carries the character forward into legendary status with grace and confidence. We are, however, given a treat in this film as we see Ace deal with the one animal he truly hates and that's a bat. The interractions with Ace and the bat scenes are utterly fantastic and take full advantage of his physical comedy skill.
Obviously the supporting cast play just as an important role as Carrey himself, especially the return of his spider monkey companion Spike. I still want one by the way. The setting of an African jungle is somewhat a surprise and a delight; the surprise being that a Pet Detective would be less strange in the setting of an African jungle, and a delight in that it places Ace in his element and doesn't focus on the weirdness that a Pet Detective would create much like in the first film. Taking that weird factor away for a cheap laugh allows for a broader range of comedy. You do still have the weird reactions towards the man from the pompous upper class friends of Cadby, but they aren't so apparent as to become the main comedy movemement of the film.
The usual catchphrases make a return and are welcomed back as they again are not overused, and when are used, they are well placed and appear to be quite witty. I would eagerly place this on the table of any of my friends and order them to watch it, knowing full well they would enjoy it and too end up on the brink of wetting their pants with laughter. The only unfortunate thing about the Ace Ventura series is it has now been soiled by satan himself David Evans, who has decided to bring back the character in the form of a fat child. It is one of those movies that takes a fondly remembered Carrey character and destroys it with a terrible make prequel, sequel or alternative angle.
Steer clear from the third film; instead remember the character fondly by viewing this and the first incarnation.
not as good as the first, but still hilarious
posted on 31 Aug 2009Not surprisingly, this sequel is not as funny as the first Ace Ventura movie, but it is still hilarious and well worth seeing, especially if you like Jim Carrey and his physical comedy. The first Ace Ventura movie is an absolute classic of maniacal physical comedy, so it would have been very hard to top that. Nonetheless, if you liked the first one, you should get a lot of laughs out of this one too. Plenty of wacky nature scenes, funny animals, and car driving like only Ace can do it. Where does it rank with Carrey's other comedies? It's not as good as the top four: the first Ace Ventura, The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, and Liar Liar. But it's not that far behind either. excellent comedy movie!!!
posted on 12 Aug 2009One of the best and my favorite comedy movies ever! I have watched it at least 7 times and found it funny each time. All those guys saying this part is not as good as the first one, must be out of their sense of humor! This part lives up to its expectations and i found it even funnier than the first part. You might get bored watching the first part 3 or 4 times but not this part! This is a must see film if you haven't seen it already. I own its DVD and keep it very close to my DVD player all the times...never know when i'd like to watch it again :-) I would give it a well deserving 10 out of 10, it cant get any better than this. I really feel sorry for those who didn't find it funny. Please Don't miss it...watch it today!!! Highly recommended!!!!
Very funny
posted on 09 Aug 2009A very funny film, one of the funniest around. 'Ace Ventura:When Nature Calls isn't quite as good as the original, but is still quite good. This one is about him going to Africa to find a sacred bat before a couple are married. If the couple from different tribes are married without the bat, the tribes will go to war. The only problem, it turns out that Ace doesn't like bats. The same type of humour is employed here as in the first, and Jim Carrey fans will not be disappointed.
Could be the funniest movie ive ever Seen!!!!
posted on 25 Jul 2009personally i think this blows the first one out of the water. the jokes are non-stop. and its all Jim all the time. there is a plot in the movie, all be it a weak one, but that really doesnt matter. i was laughing so hard i forgot what was going on. isnt the point of a sequel to NOT copy the first? how many movies have come and gone by trying to recreate the success it once had? sure other than jim there are no other people from the first one, and so what? the characters in this do their job. its just a non stop joke fest. if you want to laugh then laugh some more and when you think thats done, laugh again, rent this classic!!!
I Gave It A Chance
posted on 10 Jul 2009I usually despise Jim Carrey movies but ACE VENTURA PET DETECTIVE was just about bearable so decided to watch the sequel even though I`m a confirmed Carrey hater . The movie gets off to a good start with a spoof on CLIFFHANGER and the following scenes aren`t a million miles removed from RAMBO 3 , and as the action moves to darkest Africa OZ fans will notice the chap who plays Simon Adebisi , ( I can`t be bothered to spell his name ) , alas when the action moves to Africa the problems with this movie also begin with the plot featuring Ace looking for a rare bat becoming more and more obscure with Carrey`s slapstick mannerisms coming more to the fore . I`ve never been a slapstick fan and I find even Mr Laural and Mr Hardy can be hit and miss ( And believe me Carrey doesn`t belong in the same sentence as that legendary duo ) so the more the movie went on the more I found myself disliking it , and by the end credits I absolutely hated ACE VENTURA WHEN NATURE CALLS For Carrey fans only
Second time's NOT a charm...
posted on 01 Jun 2009Let's be honest, the first was hardly of Oscar calibre in terms of plot, characters, structure or drama; but it made me laugh uproariously, and that was all I cared about. The sequel, however, lacks whatever mysterious ingredient it was that made the first one such a treat. So much so that a wan smile is often the best you can come up with when you really feel like the makers wanted you to be holding your sides. Perhaps it's down to over-familiarity with the character, but I doubt that's it. The old "Ace" was always wacky enough so that you never knew what was coming next unless you'd seen the film. The same is true here I suppose, but most times the punchline is really weak, and definitely not worth waiting for. I think there is more material in "Ace", but I doubt that we'll ever see it unless they bring in a new actor. Jim is above playing this kind of slapstick goon now. A more accurate reason for the dip in quality between films would have to be laziness. This is basically just your staple 'fish-out-of-water' comedy with the same tired old jokes, but revolving around the ingenious central character. Unfortunately, even HE can't resuscitate ideas that have been dead for so long. It shows that the film is uninspired because it was knocked out little over a year after the original. After the phenomenal success of the first, the producers must've just seen dollar signs. It's a shame. I only laughed heartily ONCE, and those who've read my glowing review of its predecessor will know just what a telling statement that is.
For a sequel, this is not bad at all.
posted on 08 May 2009In the second installment of Ace, overtaken by Steve Oedekerk, Ventura travels to Africa with the duty of finding a sacred bat that belongs to an African tribe and is a very sacred symbol. As seen in the first one, Jim Carrey dominates the rest of the cast with his witty and outrageous performance as the crazed pet detective. The plot of this film, though outlandish and a bit bizarre, somewhat maintains the humor seen in the first installment. This is a film, though not better, that is as good as the previous one. Two thumbs up for Jim Carrey8/10
Sporadically funny due to an OTT Carrey
posted on 11 Apr 2009Despite being retired since a cliff top incident with a racoon, Ace comes out of retirement to help find a missing sacred bat that is the symbol of peace between two African tribes. However he finds things are not all as it seems. The sequel to the first film was never going to be a fantastically inventive affair but rather more of the same, albeit not as fresh or different. The plot is almost meaningless and certainly not important to enjoying the film.
The comedy is everything and it almost manages to make for a good film.
Opening with an inspired and hilarious Cliff Hanger spoof followed by a reference to William Shatner's episode of the Twilight Zone, the film fails to really keep it up and slips into relying wholeheartedly on Carrey's mugging.Mostly this is funny but it is less sophisticated than the first film (if it's possible to describe the first film as that!). The jokes become more about the faces he pulls than about any invention in the dialogue or writing. As such you'll like this or hate it based on how you like Carrey when he is manic. I like him when I'm in the mood and laughed pretty regularly here.Carrey of course carries the film with ease but also has famous support like he did in the first film. However they are not given as much to do and are of less value Callow, Gunton and McNeice are not that missed when off-screen. Of curiosity value are several British actors playing Nigerians Akinnuoye-Agbaje is better known as the amazing actor from Oz on HBO and is given nothing to do here, meanwhile Okonedo is pretty and humorous for those of us who know her better for her gritty role in Clocking Off on BBC1.Overall anyone watching this should just be aware of what they are getting it's a silly comedy that is totally reliant on Carrey's mugging to carry it.
If you're not in the mood for that then avoid but even if you are then you should be aware that it still might not be that good a film.
