Nice cute little escapism movie

posted on 20 Aug 2009

WEll casted, Harrelson and Hayek do a good job of supporting Brosnan in a well filmed bit of escapism. It felt like you were on holiday with all 3 people! Good product placement for the Atlantis resort and I do wonder if there is such a suite there. I must have a bad case of hitting Middle age because I never got surprised as there was very little suspense or imaginative turns in the sub-par plot. WHat works in this movie is the situation comedy where Harrelson plays the same endearing "Woody" character with just enough smarts to trail the burglar duo. I could have done without the heavy accented sterotyping of the minor island police characters. Anyway I'm a sucker for tall drinks, cleavage and palm trees. I got all three so all in all a good rental!

Good Cast but fails to deliver

This movie has good cast - Pierce Brosnan, Woody Harrelson. I don't think too much of Salma Hayek (except for that exceptional performance of hers in Frida). I have been always partial to Pierce Brosnan so this was one of the reasons to watch. But for the life of me I will not understand why both Pierce Brosnan and Woody Harrelson agreed to the weak and clichéd dialogues in the movie. The story line is wafer thin. The only redeeming part of the movie was the first 5 minutes - the heist of Napoleon Diamond #2.This is an OK movie to watch for a lazy Sunday afternoon, if you have nothing better to do.

Not bad

I've seen better movies but I've certainly seen a lot worse. I didn't go to this movie expecting Academy Award performances, I was just hoping for an hour and a half of entertainment and that's what I got. This movie kept my attention, the story was pretty good and the acting decent. Salma Hayek looked great (as usual) and Pierce Brosnan was his usual suave self. Woody Harrelson gave probably the best acting performance and was very funny. I also liked the Don Cheadle character. He was so bizarre he was entertaining. I saw one review that said the director over emphasized Salma Hayek's bikini wearing and that Pierce Brosnan always looked like he needed to shave. That is true but hey, they were supposed to be enjoying retired life at the beach. Overall I think After the Sunset did a good job of mixing action, comedy and high-tech gadgetry. I would give it a 7.5 on a scale of 1-10.

Surprisingly good... Harrelson / Brosnon / Hayek work magic!

This was a good movie. Very entertaining.. and surprisingly funny at times! Not that it's a comedy... Not by any stretch. And not that it's purely a heist movie either. It's more of a character study played out as a cross between a buddy picture, odd couple picture, and a heist film with great comic timing. Check it out and you'll see what I mean...Harrelson makes the most of every moment he's on screen, and I truly think he's what made this movie work.Salma Hayek is drop dead gorgeous in every shot, and comes off strong as well.I'd say the weakest person in the whole film was Pierce Brosnan, but it's still a good film for him, on par with his version of the Thomas Crowne Affair. If you liked that movie, you'll like this one!

Trouble in Paradise

"After the Sunset" (2004) directed by Brett Rather ("Rush Hour" trilogy, "Red Dragon") centers on two successful jewel thieves, Max Burdett (Pierce Brosnan in a role that is a homage/parody of Bond. James Bond and Crown. Thomas Crown) and his dazzling girlfriend Lola (if anything, watching Selma Hayek in bikini on the Caribbean beach is well worth the price of renting). The couple retire to the Paradise Island after they creatively stole the second of the three famous Napoleon diamonds. The unlucky FBI agent Stan Lloyd (Woody Harleson) who has been pursuing them for years comes to the island at the same time as the third huge diamond from the collection is put on public display on the new cruise ship that spends few days on the island. As a true artist, Max can't help thinking about possibilities of stealing the diamond, even if he promised Lola to concentrate on writing the wedding vows and to enjoy retirement. Stan is certain that Max won't be able to resist the temptation and would not let him out of sight with the help of tough and sexy local cop named Sophie. There is also Mr. Moore (Don Cheadle), a mafia boss, former Detroit gangster who has the plans of his own for the diamond...I don't know how plausible or original the story is, but if you don't expect too much and are ready to forgive some awkward twists and turns, not very convincing relationships or almost wasted Don Cheadle, the movie is fun to watch. Brosnan and Hayek both look nice; Brosnan and Harleson have few hilarious scenes together; the scenery is gorgeous and the sun shines as bright as the famous diamond. With the running time of just 100 minutes, Action / Comedy / Crime "After the Sunset" is a pleasant light entertainment.5.5-6/10

Nothing Spectacular

posted on 12 Apr 2009

After the Sunset is a guy movie. What more can I say. The basic story line revolves around a master thief (Brosnian) and his girlfriend (Hayek) who are trying to retire from their profession, and an FBI agent (Harrelson) who is trying to get his revenge for being humiliated so many times by Brosnian's artful heists. Set in exotic Nassau, the movie has gorgeous settings, women, and very good costume design -though somewhat reminiscent of a J. CREW summer catalogue. Pierce Brosnian's suave character is like a twin brother of Thomas Crown stealing diamonds instead of artwork. Salma Hayek is so very seductive. Woody Harrelson is just a comical persona. In the end, there is nothing spectacular about the whole thing. Some of the scenes feel too impromptu (if not awkward) and the humor is predictable. I think it is a fun movie to see but it is all too forgettable. 5/10

Ratner's Jackie Brown

posted on 04 Apr 2009

Anyone who's been following movies for the last few years probably has a strong opinion of director Brett Ratner. Personally, I think he's a mediocre director at best, who simply makes faceless, anonymous popcorn flicks that make lots of money. I guess what irks most Ratner-haters is the fact that he seems to think he's the second coming, plays the Hollywood PR machine, and overloads his DVD's with WAY too much information about himself, as if anyone watching Rush Hour 2 wondered "Wow, did Truffaut direct this? I've got to find out more about this guy!" After the competent yet totally un-necessary Red Dragon, Ratner's moved on to After the Sunset, which at first glance looks like a high-tech crime caper, but grows into a fairly adult, mature character study, not unlike Tarantino's Jackie Brown. And like that film, audiences may find themselves confused and bored over the lack of action and plot twists (this film has probably the least amount of surprises of any heist film in recent memory - but when you become emotionally invested in the characters like this, that's a good thing).Ratner's gone on record in interviews in saying that this is a love story, not between Brosnan and Hayek, but between Brosnan and Harrelson, and if you look at the film that way, you'll probably enjoy it a bit more than if you were expecting a Bond film or a slam-bang actioner. Their relationship is the center of the film, and provides a few touching scenes as well as some good laughs. As for the heist itself, well, it's kinda rushed, totally unbelievable, and VERY reminiscent of Brosnan's remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, but all in all, it's a quick, fun 90 minutes, with fun performances, lots of eye candy for the guys (and girls), and shows Ratner may be maturing as a film-maker.

I have to say, this movie was pretty darn good. It proves that Pierce Brosnan still has it in him. Congratulations! After the Sunset has some good actors in it, all of whom played their roles satisfyingly. Pierce Brosnan, Woody Harrelson, Salma Hayek, and Naomi Harris all did fantastically. Ohh, I almost forgot, Don Cheadle is in it as well. He always does great.Along with being a crime type movie, it was also pretty funny. It had a few good crack-up lines, mostly from Woody Harrelson, but, maybe one or two from Brosnan. I laughed a fair amount. One problem is some of the things that happen. Now, I'm not going to name off anything that happens, but a few events seemed a little bit far-fetched to me. But hey, thats just me.In conclusion, After the Sunset is a fun action/crime/drama/comedy that is loads of fun. See it for yourself.

An enjoyable movie with some good action scenes

Max Burdett (Pierce Brosnan) is a master jewel thief who has been credited with stealing two of the three Napoleon diamonds. He has now retired to the Bahamas, with his accomplice and lover Lola (Salma Hayek). Years earlier, Max made an enemy when he stole the second diamond from Stan Lloyd (Woody Harrelson), an FBI agent who was delivering the diamond to the museum. Stan was humiliated by the thief, and wants to put Max behind bars.Stan believes that Max wants to steal the last remaining diamond, before he really retires. The third Napoleon diamond is going to be displayed aboard a cruise ship heading for the Bahamas. This may be Stan's last chance to catch Max stealing the jewel. Stan joins forces with Sophie (Naomie Harris), an island police detective, to help in catching Max. I enjoyed the movie, and it will keep your attention to the end. Of course, Max performed some 007 type scenes in the movie while stealing the jewels. There is somewhat of a surprise ending. (New Line Cinema, Run time 1:40, Rated PG-13) (8/10)

After the sunset

I have a great love of films that involve someone beating the odds then walking off into the sunset with a bloated dufflebag full of money.SUNSET is exactly that. Brosnan plays a professional thief who walks off into the sunset, namely the Caymans, after stealing a diamond from FBI agent Woody Harrelson. of course, once in the Caymans, Brosnan who is so cocky and so cooler-than-thou, as we are made aware by his constant smirking expression, is soon bored of banging Salma Hayek's perfect caboose and decides to do just one more job, even though he has everything a man could want. This film had potential, as i have met con artists and thieves who have walked away with the goods and disappeared offshore. So I was expecting something good. This film is just so by the numbers bad that in the first 5 minutes you know you have wasted the price of admission. To begin with, the first heist is beyond James Bond suspension of disbelief: we are in science fiction. Brosnan, obviously doing this solely for the paycheck and not even looking interested as he boffs Hayek, manages to take control of Harrelson's computer controlled FBI car (don't ask) and kidnap him, in broad daylight, but also while under surveillance by the FBI. If he started to shoot ray beams out of his eyes, I wouldn't have been surprised by this point.Harrelson plays the whole thing with the realism of Larry Moe and Curly; he is played for laughs and his performance is like something out of a Disney film, at best. The final heist is again so incredible, so slick but with no explanation of how or where Brosnan managed to acquire all the technology or means to pull it off that it falls flat.In the end, Brosnan's constant sneer of superiority, I felt, was somewhat merited, as he got paid US$20M to spew this out, while I got nothing to watch it. Talk about phoning it in, the grizzled, over the hill actor could have been replaced by a mannequin and no one would have noticed. I have added this review to the ones on IMDb as they are so radiant and effusive that you'd think SUNSET was this generation's CITIZEN CANE: it's not.To cap it all off, a good deal of the dialog seems to have been hijacked to promote ... wait for it... Brosnan's watch! Yes, OK, it is the OMEGA SEAMASTER which i hope to one day own, but that's not the point. Brosnan is obviously paid a hefty retainer check to flog the OMEGA and it looks like, Brosnan has actually managed to hijack the film to market OMEGA ! I'm not making this up! The idea was that Woody is envious of Brosnan's posh lifestyle and total cool edge and turns to crime, and this is symbolized by the two men constantly comparing watches: Brosnan has the OMEGA while Woody sports a Casio or something. In the end scene, Woddy makes it big, as shown by the OMEGA which he can finally buy and ---believe it or not----he HOLDS UP TO THE CAMERA WITH A SMILING FACE... and the shot is held for two or three seconds! Holy product placement batman! It looks like an ad from TIME MAGAZINE or something! All in all, this is yet another film that could have been something, that could have meant something in my personal mythology even, but instead just made me feel stupid for having undergone it.

The bold thief Max Burdett (Pierce Brosnan) retires with his girlfriend Lola Cirillo (Salma Hayek) in a paradisiacal island after stealing an expensive diamond. Stanley Lloyd (Woody Harrelson), the FBI agent assigned to protect the stolen stone, chases Max expecting him to try to robber a valuable diamond in a passenger ship and commit a mistake."After the Sunset" is a forgettable but attractive movie: the screenplay is full of plot points, the locations are wonderful; and the cast is very nice, leaded by the delicious Salma Hayek, the ironic Pierce Brosnan and the funny Woody Harrelson. The situations are very pleasant and the viewer will certainly spend 97 minutes of good entertainment with the twists in the story. My vote is eight.Title (Brazil): "Ladrão de Diamante" ("Thief of Diamond")

Pierce Brosnan, Salma Hayek, and Woody Harrelson star in this Brett Ratner directed feature. Brosnan stars as Max Burdett, a jewel thief, who has devoted his life to the Napoleon diamond collection. Hayek plays Lola, Max's cohort in crime; and Harrelson is FBI agent, Stan Lloyd, Max's ever enthusiastic always present thorn-in-the-side.After successfully absconding two-thirds of the Napoleon collection, Max and Lola have gone into retirement in some South Sea's vacation paradise. Eager to settled down and start a normal live, Lola is only interested in the simple things in life like watching the sunset, and socializing publicly. However, their lives are upended and thrust back into the limelight when FBI agent Lloyd tracks Max down on the hunch that he might be casing the last diamond in the prestigious Napoleon collection. It so happens, whether coincidental or not, the exact island that Max and Lola have decided to retire on, is also hosting a cruise ship carrying the last diamond of this collection. Tensions run high, as Lola tries to convince Max to not venture into the trap that Lloyd is perpetrating. A subplot concerning Don Cheadle, playing Henri Moore, as a local underworld character, also motors along just under the radar of this film until the culmination of the film's pinnacle sequence, and the movie's ultimate deception.Although I found the film very predictable, it was enjoyable nonetheless. However, what I found more entertaining was the lengths that this film went to remove Brosnan's debonair James Bond image which included: showing him scruffy with facial hair most of the film, overweight with a paunch belly, and jovial homo-esquire eroticisms with the Woody Harrelson (Stan Lloyd) character. All in all, the film was not a complete disappointment. Plus there's the added bonus of having Salma Hayek to look at while on the screen too.

a gem on the rental rack!

This movie was a pleasant shock, because it wasn't typical high octane adrenaline-pumping Pierce Brosnan action flick of recent memory! The action was more subdued and less far-fetched as a typical Brosnan movie. I laughed my butt off in parts, and the cast pulled off their roles in a badass-yet-comical way!Salma Hayek adds some necessary female steam in this otherwise masculine tale! As always Pierce Brosnan delivers a wonderful performance helping to make this movie a real delight! I can't tell you much more about the movie without spoiling scenes, so, see this movie; it's worth the whatever price you pay.

Pro jewel thief Max Burdett (Pierce Brosnan) retires to a Caribbean island with his girlfriend Lola Cirillo (Salma Hayek). However, his arch enemy Stan Lloyd of the FBI (Woody Harrelson) follows and is determined to nail him. The situation hots up when the island's gangster Henri Moree (Don Cheadle) hires Max to steal a priceless diamond on board a museum ship. Meanwhile, Max's relationship with Lola is put in jeopardy by the situation.AFTER THE SUNSET is a formulaic but agreeable entertainment with pleasant locations, lively performances and it manages to pack in a neat twist in the rather routine storyline. The film never outstays it's welcome and should offer audiences quite a lot of amusement.

After the Sunset is another one of those summer heist movies that seem to come around every few years or so. While many of the other films in this genre are far superior to this film, they lack a quality that surprisingly makes this film so much fun: mindless fun and action. The film tells of a "retired" jewel thief named Max Burdet (Pierce Brosnan) and his girlfriend Lola (Salma Hayek) as they escape from their thieving days for good to the Bahamas. Here, we learn that there is a ship carrying the third and final Napoleon Diamond, and of course, Max's curiosity is aroused. The couple is being followed by FBI agent Stan Lloyd (Woody Harrleson) as he is trying to catch them in the act. Basic heist movie events occur after the stage is set, and there isn't much to separate this film from the other movies in its genre, but it just has an incredible feeling of fun that it is hard not to like it.The acting in this film is alright, but you can't exactly act well in an action movie, people aren't going to want to see this film because of the acting, and I think that this film knows that. It is a pure rush of excitement that really doesn't care if the plot has holes or not, it's all about wowing the viewer with razzle-dazzle.On the negative side, while the balls-out fun is a great positive, it has its drawbacks. The film feels like a dumbed-down younger brother of 2001's Oceans's Eleven, which is truly the best crime/heist film ever made in my opinion. It does help to watch a movie that is all about fun and little about intelligence once in a while, but there are some moments in this film that will have you saying "Ok, they did go a little too far with this".BOTTOM LINE: After the Sunset is a purely fun-filled crime flick that is just that; a flick. It brings nothing new to the genre, but takes nothing away from it either. After the Sunset is a satisfying film, but don't come expecting the intelligence and style of Ocean's Eleven.Letter Grade: B- #Score: 7/10 Stars: ***/4

Flat and watery

This is one big long so-what commercial for a sprawling hotel in the Bahamas and it winds up being as duh as the flat beaches it seeks to glamorize. Amazingly for a heist movie featuring gorgeous beings it fails to generate either suspense or romantic heat. The direction is so unimaginative that it compares favorably with the dreary movie commercials one is forced to view in cineplexes before getting to the feature. The most imaginative it gets is in producing the mandatory car chase at the beginning rather than towards the end. What a waste of beautiful and often talented people said to be actors. It's painful to watch Woody Harrelson playing badly the FBI fool and Salma Hayek exposing her beauty and little else. This is commercial movie-making near its worst; everyone involved with this production should be sentenced to a course in remedial film-making or a lifetime of sipping the treacly multicolor fruit-laced "tropical drinks" that show up every few hundred frames. The script features lines that possess all the grace of dry cement, including a priceless comment about a huge cruise ship sailing back to Paris; at last sighting the French capital was deep inland, on the banks of the Seine river where one would be lucky to float anything drawing more than 10 feet. One suspects this movie was shot as a winter pastime in the sun for cast and crew in exchange for a freebie stay at a sprawling hotel that looks like a pink-walled high-rise version of San Quentin prison on Paradise Island --a misnomer if there ever was one judged from the primitive antics herein depicted. You'd be well advised to head elsewhere before or after sunset.

Utter Drivel

Sorry but I have to say this film was truly awful. A repeat of the Thomas Crown affair, which was only good because of the originality of the 1960's script. Yes Ms Hayek does seem to get a lot of top and bottom shots, I wonder why that is? And Mr Brosnan squaring up to the physically inferior Mr Harrelson.Plainly the scene that said it all for me was when Mr FBI is getting some TLC from that Barbados copper, crap accent, and they repeat the scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark. The one where Mr Ford is getting TLC from Ms Allen on the pirate boat, when Mr Ford is pointing to the bits of his face that hurt and Ms Allen is kissing them.So this movie has absolutely no imagination in the script. The acting is non-existent as the performers seem only to be massaging their ego's. Oh and that bloke from Neighbours the Aussie soap, as the ships captain, what accent was his meant to be? And the best part is, with no expensive sets, CG effects, crashing cars etc, this film would have been very cheap to make. And will make stacks of money. Like Mr Paul Zbyszewski's other production effort "The Weakest Link" what a talent! Sadly the rating scale does not go to Zero....

Who can look at a movie with Selma Hayek and not enjoy the view. Aspecialy with all the skin she is showing in this movie. bikini, sexy panties, even a little bit of topless. She was lying on top of Pierce, so nothing was shown, but still, a little bit of side boob from Selma is a lot better then most woman here in Amsterdam. The story is awesome, the cast is great, and woody....you where awesome. Why don't we see more of this man. Pierce, what can we say about him. this roles are meant for this man. I know everybody loves him as 007, but in performance like this, he goes from great to immense. The reason that i could not grade it higher is because i had the feeling i saw it all before.

How can you go wrong with Selma Hayek?

posted on 26 Sep 2008

Plenty of both her, and her body in this movie. Pierce Brosnan plays his typecast GQ intellectual, but he suits the part better than anyone else could, I guess. Some good comedy relief, but no real suspense or emotion, just the telling of a story, which makes it hard for me to actually classify this movie. I think it could have been about 20 to 30 minutes shorter, and is worth to see on a rainy day (as it was when I saw it), but anything past that might be pushing the envelope. It might have bored me a little bit, however. Sometimes I think I'd start looking for more Hayek because the story line couldn't hold my attention. It wasn't bad, though. Did I mention Hayek is in this film? =]

A pity, I was waiting for so much more. Like a bad James Bond; too straight forward with no real smart ideas or twists.

A pity, I was waiting for so much more. Like a bad James Bond; too straight forward with no real smart ideas or twists.Filming is of high quality in the style of Ocean's 11 etc.Acting is fine as you would expect with this crew but the movie as whole leaves you feeling really empty. This pair that's supposed to be a couple of highly skilled and smart thieves come of as charmy and cute but not really smart above the average. Which is a pity because both could have pulled it off.Small scale action with very shallow plot. Tech gadgets without really smart application of them etc. All in all like a bad modern day James Bond movie. For _light_ entertainment or if you are fairly bored (prepare to be even more after this).
