I love, love, love this movie!

posted on 22 Aug 2009

"Aquamarine" is a beautiful, magical family film. It concerns two friends, Hailey and Claire, Hails is moving to Australia of all places! They say a prayer the night of a terrible storm at sea and a mermaid is washed into their pool! Even better the mermaid can grant a wish! All Aqua needs is to prove love exists to her dad and she'll grant the girls a wish! Emma Roberts sweetly plays Claire and Jojo is Hailey. Sara Paxton is the title mermaid and she's terrific! Remember what a snot she played in "Sleepover"? She does a totally different (duh!) character here and is totally convincing. I loved the feel of magic in this movie! And it wasn't predictable or sappy and the girls were wonderful. See all summer long Hails and Claire have had a crush on hunky lifeguard Ray, well-played by Jake McDorman, but Aqua immediately decides Ray is the boy for her! Still Claire Hailey help the lovelorn mermaid try to make Ray for for her in three days, thats all she's got and then it's back to the sea! The situations in this movie were beautiful and surprising. Ray, for a change is a really nice guy and not a jerk like most teen movies, which always made it hard to root for the girl to get such a bozo. Ray is sweet and sensitive. Aqua is so endearing as she tries to adjust to life on land! Sara was so cute here! The girls are hampered by a snot named Cecilia. Favourite line? "Aquamarine, pretty name-for a crayon!" "Well, I was named after a rare and precious gem, whereas Cecilia means dim-sighted" Cool. The music was also great here, very sweet and the songs rocked! Cecilia tries a real nasty trick and you'll never guess who saves the day! The supporting players here, OK the adults, were really good. I loved, and I mean loved, the end of this movie! It was so touching and so heart-breaking and then it all comes together in a exciting way. I'm pretty sure they used cgi, but who cares? It was wonderful!"Awuamarine" Is the best family movie I've seen since "Gold-diggers" Which I also strongly recommend. I can't believe nobody told me how good this was! I can't wait to watch it again! I also have "Bridge to Terabithia" And this was much better. You want depth? Pay attention to Claire's story, wonderfully handled. I loved this film, think I said that enough? Anyhow give this delightful tale or is that tail? A chance, you'll love it too.

Great Movie

Omg! This was such a good movie. I LOVED Emma Roberts in it. By the way John Q. Public "vhspreowner", you are a retard. I reported your review about 10 for being VERY INAPROPRIATE for this site because kids come on it and read reviews. So shut your mouth. You don't know what you're talking about. Go Emma Roberts!

Unexpectedly great!

This is a shockingly good movie! The acting is great from Emma Roberts, Sara Paxton and (*mega-gasp*) Jojo! The story never has boring or empty parts and there's a really great message to be heard about love and friendship. Also, it's actually really funny! This is a perfect movie for young teens to watch with friends and even mom! Very worth the money to buy or rent.

Very good, gentle film

Fantasy films about mermaids or ghosts, etc. have to be very good, or they just don't work because they are so far from reality. I saw Aquamarine with my young daughter. I thoroughly enjoyed the film, and so did my daughter. It was very well written. The title character is quirky and funny, and has wonderful things to teach girls about being themselves, growing into young women, and what friendship and love are all about. But the film is never preachy. It has great humor. Aquamarine is one of those films that a parent can take their children to, and enjoy it just as much as do the kids. I highly recommend this film.

It was the night Australia came to a standstill.....

Sassy. Fresh. Hilarious. Denim. Non-Sea Witches.
Just a few words to describe a party I went to.
But AquaMarine is, arguably, the best movie ever.
If you were to argue with Mark Viduka, Australian Soccer Star.

I watched this at a sleepover with young lady friends of mine to delightful applause from everyone, except for Lucy who went home sick. Full of Pizza!

The acting snap, crackles n pops with over 4 Australian supporting actors. The uproarious Shaun Micallef blew our socks off at his brilliantly different take on a Weatherman. Hilarious?
You bet, Johnny. Johnny Farnham, who was not in the movie sadly.

I like JoJo. Says Jess.

Oh, did I say JoJo? I meant Lindsay Lohan.
Shes not in this movie Jess.
Opps, my mistake.

I liked the Mermaid. It reminded me of that movie where the mermaid wants to be "part of our world" and dreams of no longer living "under the sea" to find her true love on land. I think it was called The Shaggy Dog, either way, its lovely.

Lovely and wet like all undersea adventures.

Did you hear Fran got married?
She sure did.

5 stars.
3 from Jess only because she thought Lindsay Lohan may have been in it.

Hooray.

Awful Awful Awful

Was the select film on the way home from my summer trip abroad. Awful. would've walked out if it was in a cinema. Pure teen America cheese without any humour. Only worth watching if you are an American girl aged between 5 and 12. It was like watching a little magazine show where everyone is too pretty and the summer is great and everyone has "the best time ever". All the kids look the same, struggled to pick out the film hunk from his friends, SAME goes for the girls. Of course the 2 heroines were made to look like tom boys and dowdy to make them stand out from the rest. old idea, tired. this film just rolls out the old stereo types and adds a ridiculous adage that 1. mermaids exist, 2. they can have legs when they want, 3. they talk and 4. they are not scared blind of humans!! AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL. why do film companies continue to waste horrendous amounts of cash on junk like this

It was much better than I expected

I was really surprised at the potential of this movie! I went expecting it to be another stupid poorly done fairy tale, but left thinking that it was so much more! The chemistry of Emma, Jojo, and Sarah is incredible, and it really is brought out in their acting. I never expected to see great acting out of emotions from them, but they made their feelings so real - which I never would've expected from them. thought a lot of any three of these actresses until now - but it was very good. If you go see this movie, expect to leave hoping that maybe one day you'll find a mermaid - it gives everybody a little taste of magic. Well done! Great for kids of all ages, I'm 12 and I liked it as much as my 7 year old sister.

Um I speak 26 languages, blah blah blah, were royalists blah blah blah, oh yeah I'm also a ditsy mermaid!

this is probably one of the worst films I have ever seen. It really has not point. It's tag line "a fish out of water comedy" is false. Through the movie their may be 1 or 2 smiles, maybe even a giggle, but i wouldn't really categorize this as a comedy. Heres the whole movie in words....So two annoying girls named Hayley and Claire (what exotic names!) constantly go to a beach club where there's this bulimic "hottie" who they love who's name is Raymond. They go day after day to stare at him and at the mean girls breast and complain how big her's are and how their's are not....skip to that night. There's a big mysterious storm that just happens to blow a mermaid in the beach clubs swimming pool. the next day the girls see Raymond and decide 2 go out. CHEESEOVERLOAD,CUE CHEESEDEPOSIT!!!!!! Claire falls into pool, mermaid happens to be residing in said poop. she screams and heroic Raymond rips his shirt off to reveal his sexy bod (ya right) and he jumps in to rescue Claire. CLAIR IS SAVED(and good cause if she died this early this movie would be even worse). end day 2 cue night 2.....Claire and Haley are eating gummy worms and go tot the pool they see the mermaid and are frightened but act like they saw their other best friend 4 seconds later(for all they know, she could be a serial killer). they become best friends..end night 2 cue day 3.....they bond blah blah blah...they decide that aquamarine likes Raymond, so they flirt.....not frontally but in a way ...CHEESEOVERLOAD,CUE CHEESEDEPOSIT!!!!!! aquamarine falls of bike, heroic Raymond jumps out window, rips his shirt off (YES Again!!), leaps over banister, and rushes 2 rescue. mean girl shows up and of course the frigid mermaid tells her off which sparks a necessary hate vs.hate relationship between them.... end day 3 cue night 3....they stuff the fish in a water tower.end night 3 cue day 4.... theirs a street fair and aquamarine goes with guess who! Raymond, they bond blah blah blah..oh no! its 5pm,aquamarine and her inflatable dolphin that Raymond gave to here must be shoved back into the water tower!...end day 4 cue night 5...nothing happens....end night 5 cue day 6.... the girls are at a bus stop, they go shopping, aquamarine yells like a 5 year old... they go to a dance......aquamarine dances with Raymond, she has to go back 2 the water tower...uh oh, mean girls follow...mean girl 1 finds out shes a mermaid, sh4e tells the news but all they find in the water tower is the stupid dolphin Raymond gave her...I'm getting sick of this and you are too so lets just say this movie probably ends like it sounds it would.

An excellent mermaid film

posted on 21 Jul 2009

I was shocked and surprised by the negative reviews I would see on the web...I mean why the low rating?? I thought this was an excellent mermaid film, and I LOVE mermaids just like my mom love angels; of course, I have also read the original novel by Alice Hoffman (author of Practical Magic) too.The film is about two twelve-year-old girls Hailey & Clarie, are in love with a dilapidated beach club near their home. After a huge storm, they discover Aquamarine, a mermaid, in the pool of the club. Aquamarine then falls in love with the cute, young lifeguard Raymond, who and begs the girls to help her set up a date with him to prove to her father that love is not a myth in her world (and also to try get a wish from Aqua to prevent Hailey from moving to Australia). I kind of like Aqua & Raymond as a couple (they're cute); at least she didn't turn into bubbles when he saw she's a mermaid, like one of my favorite anime series Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch.

this movie is awesome.

A so-so tweeny comedy

posted on 10 Jul 2009

Jojo and Emma Roberts play Hailey and Claire, best friends who live in Bay Bridge, Florida whose summer is winding down and will end with Hailey's departure to Australia with her marine biologist mother. Hailey and Claire will do anything to not be separated and one night during a roaring storm they make a wish that Hailey will somehow be able to stay. The next morning they find a mermaid, Aquamarine, in the pool of their beach club. Aqua informs them that she is being forced by her father to marry a lame merman in three days unless she can prove to him that true love exists. She enlists Claire and Hailey's help in this effort and informs them that if they help her, she'll grant them one wish.

Aquamarine has all the elements of a teen comedy that is appropriate for girls around age 13: a love story, best friends facing separation, learning to overcoming fears and accepting your own independence. The film is chock full of mermaid jokes that are occasionally a bit cheesy (Aqua can speak to her father in the ocean using a shell--her "shell phone.") Overall this film was cute, but not stellar. I think it would be fun for young girls around the age of the characters in the movie (12-14) but past that age some of the attempts at humor might fall flat.

Cute if you're four

posted on 09 Jul 2009

I took my four-year-old to see this over the weekend. I knew it was going to be hokey...but I didn't realize exactly how bad it was. When the movie's opening scene is two tweens ogling over a teenage lifeguard reciting his favorite things and doing that annoying pre-teen squeak, I knew I was in for a long afternoon. I remember those days when I had nothing to worry about except if that cute guy would ask me out and the worst day of my life would be to watch the "mean girl" go out with him. aahhh, that was the life. After ten minutes of the "oohs and aahhs", they try to create a plot: best friends are being separated and mermaid comes in wanting to "prove love exists". Through the usual scenes of shopping, gossip magazines and giggles whenever he looks their way, we muddle through the dry plot to a truly corny closing scene where I ended up laughing where I guess I was supposed to be weepy-eyed. Do I have my own "hotties"? Absolutely. Hugh Jackman and David Hewlett top my list. But do I spend all my time learning their favorite songs, foods and watching their every move? Uh, I have other things to do like pay my mortgage and raise my kids. My daughter thought it was fascinating--she loves mermaids and now she wants to be one. If you're four years old, you'll love it. But if you're older than four, this movie is boring and beyond bad.

A nice teenage splasher movie

posted on 07 Jul 2009

Aquamarine is a nice teenage girl film that is meant for the young, and young at heart. Only a couple of obvious misques in the dialog, but the result is a light hearted film about growing up, loving people, and being best friends forever. The energy of the actors grabs your attention and also keeps the uncomplicated scenes working well. The scenery or backdrop makes you long for a nice vacation on the beach. While the plot is old hat, the little spins and good camera work make it a fun film. Watch it to see if the mermaid Aquamarine (Paxton) and her new found friends played by Levesque and Roberts can find love and have their wishes granted. I look forward to seeing these actresses in many more films.

SOOOOOOO Good!

When I first rented this movie I thought "O Boy!" But after I saw it the first time I fell in love with it! I must have watched it 4 times! I highly recomend this for girls everywhere! I also recomend you buy the Aquamarine soundtrack with it. Emma Roberts and JoJo are soooooo good in this! Sara Paxton is very easy to like. Please watch this at least once and you are garenteed to fall in love with it as I did.

Great stuff

Lotsa guys are writing: "wonderfull film, my daughters liked it"(yeah right, like you didn't).Anyway, I loved the "happyness tone" of the film. It has sea, beautiful girls, and even though it's supposed to be at Florida, you can't help but get enchanted by the Aussie atmosphere. Also, the most violent scene is probably one where a girl spits soda on two other. I think this is nice. When I film can be enjoyed by young girls as well as by a 27 year old man, I consider it in high esteem nowadays. Great for those who like that sort of comedy, and films whose plots depict part of the female universe, from a female point of view(the director being a woman herself). Recommended for those who wanna get into a happy mood.

Very Good-Much Better than "Narnia", or most of the rest of the Stuff out there

posted on 01 Jul 2009

"Aquamarine" is a great movie. People who think it's a ripoff of "Splash" haven't seen one or the other (or either). In "Splash", the man and the mermaid are the center of attention. Here, it is the two girls. There's no accounting for taste in that "Narnia" did so well, and this one tanked. They can make a good movie without people getting cut up, as in "Narnia", or people being focused only on sex, as with other movies. You need goodness and innocence, at least once in a while.Realistic might not be the right word to use about a movie with a mermaid, but there is realism. Raymond likes Aquamarine, but after three days, he does not fall in love with her, but they agree to keep on seeing each other. Leonard, although he looks creepy, is really a good guy.Agaumarine does not find Romano love, but she finds love in friendship. Clair and Hailey learn about giving up what you want for a better good.

Great for young girls

My fiancé and I could not help but laugh at the ridiculousness of this movie the whole way through. Very rarely does a teen movie THIS cheesy come along...I had hoped it would be smarter than it was. That said though, it is full of really great messages for the little/young girls who would mostly go to this movie, including: you can be pretty AND keep your clothes on, tanning does not necessarily make you pretty, friends should always come first (BEFORE boys!), some crushes are unrealistic but its OK because they're still fun!, sometimes the best choice is the hardest one to make, etc. etc. etc.It really does have a very sweet theme about love...love for our friends, our family, and healthy, realistic teen love. I can't wait to take my four little sisters who are 11, 9, 7 and 5, and I have no reservations about doing so. They will LOVE it!!!

A good dose of girl power for girls of all ages

posted on 01 May 2009

I am 20 years old. Every time someone I knew said they wanted to see this movie, I would say, "that is a baby movie!" Then one night my little brother (he's 11) felt like seeing a movie and there was nothing out really...so we went to see "Aquamarine." We were both very surprised. It was terrific. The acting and the story were superb. One of the things I really liked was the message that the movie sends to every girl that could be 12 or 40: It tells you that all you need is love from your friends- not any GUY. Aqamarine is on a mission to find true love during the movie to break a spell and not have to marry a merman her father wants her to marry. At the end the spell is broken but not because of the cute lifeguard Aquamarine has had a fling with- but because of the true love that her friends have for her.

Aquamarine...what really is there to say

posted on 30 Apr 2009

This movie was definitely not one to wait in line for. The acting was corny, repetitive, and the movie was simply way to long. The three main girls are attractive, yes,and Aqua's love interest "Raymond" is also good looking, but the plot was dull and repetitive. This movie basically sucked, haha. A 6 year old would probably find the movie unentertaining as well, and that should say a great deal.So there you have it people, my review of this film. A useless attempt to snag the 'tween' population focused on boys, nail polish, and well, boys. Nice try, guys.Hard to imagine JoJo as a needy teenager when she was already singing about a cheating boyfriend at age 13.Want to see a decent film? Don't see Aquamarine, bleck.
