"Are We There Yet?" should be re-titled "Why Did We Make it?"
posted on 20 Aug 2009"Are We There Yet?" is a so-called family comedy that is about a hotshot sports shop owner named Nick (Ice Cube) who hates children but loves the ladies. One day, after he buys his brand new Lincoln Navigator, Nick falls in love with Suzanne Kingston (Nia Long) who works across the street from his work. Nick tries everything he can to get a relationship started with her but she seems very uninterested. Until when Suzanne needs him to bring her daughter Lindsey Kingston (Aleisha Allen) and her son Kevin Kingston (Philip Bolden) to Vancouver because she has to leave today or she loses her job and her ex-husband is now sick and refuses to take the children while she is away. So Nick offers to take the kids to Vancouver but little does Nick know that her children do not want their mommy involved with any other man then their dad because they know that he is going to come back to them soon. So Nick is in for a trip of a lifetime and comedy supposedly ensues . Ice Cube is not nearly as terrible as I would have imagined but he still doesn't act very well. His role in this film was very moronic but I think it was supposed to be. Aleisha Allen who played the daughter Lindsey was all right I guess. She got really annoying after a while because all she kept doing was whining on and on. Philip Bolden was good. I liked him better out of the two kids. He had some pretty amusing lines like the one when he asked Nick if he had any Justin Timberlake or Clay Aiken. That was funny. But then again Philip Bolden had some seriously bad lines that some one who was in charge of editing the script should have erased. I felt very offended for the parents of the children in the audience when he said you're just a horny guy who wants sex to Nick. He said that line a couple times too and I was like wow that's way too much for a little kid to be saying. So moving on, Nia Long was OK. She didn't have much of a part. The most annoying character though in the whole movie was a Satchel Paige bobble head that was animated and was voiced by Tracy Morgan, worst character ever!It took four people to write this less then average movie. I am quite amazed by this. The writers on this film in no particular order are Steven Gary Banks (Slugger), Claudia Grazioso (Bring It On Again), J. David Stem (Shrek 2), & David N. Weiss (Shrek 2). Since two of these writers wrote "Shrek 2", "Jimmy Neutron", & "The Rugrats Movie" I am surprised how badly this film came out. I admit at times I laughed for example at the scene in the car with Hamster song was great but then we have scenes like where the kids go to their dads house and it gets all serious for about 5 seconds and then turns back into stupidity or the deer fight scene, like we haven't seen that before. It was a way to typical of a script and it did a really bad job of trying to teach kids a message. If Mommy and Daddy break up then Daddy will lie to mommy and never see his kids. I mean what a great message. Yes, I know that's how the world works but in a movie as childish as this one why did they have to add that scene, this isn't a serious family drama. The dialogue at times was very inappropriate for children. And who ever wrote in the talking bobble head doll should be shot because what was the point of that? To give sex comments to Ice Cube's character. I mean seriously guys and gals calm down with the script. There was way too much happening like going from all these weird situations that Nick is being put into, to the crazy truck driver, to the Christmas party, I mean wow too much added characters and stories. And most of the scenes that were supposed to be funny just fell flat. A few scenes worked most didn't. Even the children in the theater didn't even laugh as much as I would have thought. And finally please stop with the fart jokes. They aren't funny and even the kids aren't laughing at them anymore. Please let that go it's not 1985 anymore. So in conclusion, "Are We There Yet?" won't be the worst film of the year nor will it be a memorable one either. Some parts of this film are entertaining however most falls flat going from serious issues back to pure stupidity. It was like they tried to do too much with the movie and wanted to make it both funny and serious at the same time and it didn't work well. "Are We There Yet?" is very predictable and you can probably guess where the movie is going to go by just watching the trailer. Most of the funniest parts for children are in the trailer and basically the trailer tells most of the movie. I would recommend renting the movie when it comes on DVD or wait till cable, it is definitely not worth seeing in the theater but like I said its not going to be the worst film of the year. I am sure we will have a lot worse ones over the next few months. There are some scenes like I mentioned earlier that are inappropriate for some children because it's a very borderline PG/PG-13 movie so be warned there. Other than that most is harmless and stupid. I didn't see as much potential in the film as I did with Racing Stripes but hey that's another story.MovieManMenzel's final rating for "Are We There Yet?" is a 4/10
Is It Over Yet ?
posted on 19 Aug 2009This movie was how can I put this...... okay the only reason I gave the movie 3 stars was because Ice Cube was in the movie. Those kids were so not funny- they were literally the demon children from an uncharted hell. If I were in the movie I would have to hurt those brats just as much as they had damaged Ice Cube and his car ! The stupid part was that he still stayed with those kids and still tried to hook up with their mom ! I like the Friday movies better.
Are We Done Yet?
posted on 14 Aug 2009Are We There Yet has to be one of the most stereotypical movie every made. For starters let me say that 10 minutes in the movie and i was already going to get more food! This movie is like any other road trip movie. Have you ever seen a road trip movie that something has not gone wrong?!? Let me throw in that anyone that is reading this and is thinking, " I love road trip movies with accidents", well that will change when you hear the kids. If they were mine i would backhand them until they show some respect. Sure there are 1 or 2 knee slapper parts in it but other all its was not more interesting than my toilet bowl. Are We There Yet should be renamed to Are We Done Yet! 1 out of 10 *
this movie is the greatest
posted on 10 Aug 2009in the words of a thirteen year old kid. this movie was one of the funniest things i've ever seen. I practically passed out laughing ice cube, was a trip. and those kid's don't let me get started about them. it's kinda sad to I won't tell why because you would have to see the movie i give it a ten. And I advise everyone to go see it with their family.that's why it's tops in the box office. I think. But still it's a 10. This movie is the bomb my whole family loved it do not listen to the message boards they are stupid people who don't know good taste. i give this movie two thumbs up!
Funny and Family-Friendly, But Nothing Special
posted on 01 Aug 2009Nick Persons (Ice Cube) is a swinging bachelor that lives in Portland, Oregon. He runs a successful and highly profitable sports hobby shop. One day Nick sees a beautiful woman that he almost immediately falls for. Her name is Suzanne Kingston (Nia Long) and she has all the characteristics of a mate that Nick has been looking for. However, Nick soon learns that Suzanne is divorced and has two children. Nick is terrified of children, but he likes Suzanne and is determined to make their relationship work. The kids, daughter Lindsey (Aleisha Allen) and Kevin (Philip Daniel Bolden), still desperately want their parents to get back together and have done everything in their power to prevent their mom from having a successful relationship with anyone else. Even though Nick is nicer and more loveable than some of the other prospects, he is NOT an exception to the kids' dislike and they use their full measure of ingenuity to get rid of him. But it doesn't work because Nick has fallen for Suzanne and vice versa. Then Suzanne is forced to stay in Vancouver for New Years and asks Nick to bring her the kids so they can be together for the holiday. The journey becomes a test for the relationship between Nick and Suzanne as well as the turning point between Nick and Lindsey and Kevin.
Other than being set in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, ARE WE THERE YET? is a highly derivative film and doesn't really offer anything new to the family road trip subgenre. There are scenes in the movie that are slightly altered, but have been used before in such films as NATIONAL LAMPOON'S FAMILY VACATION, HOME ALONE, and TOMMY BOY. Also, it takes awhile for the audience to feel empathetic towards Lindsey and Kevin and the abuse they pour on Nick. For half of the movie, the children seem completely selfish, uncaring, and downright cruel.
Still, even with a fairly weak and derivative script and a couple of self-centered kids, ARE WE THERE YET? works as a family movie. The movie only has some comical violence, hardly any foul language, and contains an important message about the importance of family, sticking together, and the power of unconditional love. It may not be a great movie, but ARE WE THERE YET? is a decent one that children and their parents can safely enjoy watching together.
No Audience For This Film
posted on 20 Jul 2009This film is plainly marketed towards kids. It is kids who "star" in the movie. Ice Cube acts like a kid. There are more kids than adults throughout the course of the movie.
Older kids (read: teenagers) might think this is a little too silly or obnoxious or both. And adults... come on!!! Anything meant to be taken seriously is so over-the top or unrealistic that it is hard to find any true pleasure in this film.
Despite the usually tame PG rating, I wanted to check out the movie before purchasing for my nearly 9-year-old son.
First of all, would a 9-year-old find this movie entertaining? Certainly! There is a lot of childish slapstick to keep any 9-year-old on the edge of their seats. There are some adult issues that come up, but nothing a 9-year-old really couldn't understand.
But the bottom line is, I would feel uncomfortable having my 9-year-old watch this. For two reasons:
Mainly, it is the dialogue. It was atrocious. I wanted to take those kids and wash their mouths out with soup. They said things that little kids should not be saying, or even thinking. These are supposed to be sophisticated kids? I'd hate to see what they think unsophisticated kids talk like.
Also, it is the way the kids treat others. They are just plain sadistic. They nearly kill innocent men and sit back and laugh at it as if they had it coming to them. Oh yes, pass the popcorn.
So, little kids shouldn't see it and everybody else won't like it. That leaves.... nobody. Nobody should see this film.
Absolutely hilarious! Highly recommended.
posted on 02 Jul 2009This movie is great! I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but this went well beyond my expectations in terms of hilarity. Yes, a few of the scenes are over done and unrealistic, but they just add to the humor. It is also quite humorous to see a brand new, customized Lincoln get turned into a something not even worthy of a junkyard. Some of the other scenes are romantic "nonsense", but it doesn't detract from the movie much at all.
I would definitely recommend that you see this movie at least once, and if possible, multiple times. It is well worth your time. Buying this movie would also be a great idea.
Horrible!!!!!
posted on 30 Jun 2009it might sound crazy, but I truly beleive that Jerri curl era Ice cube could have pulled off this "Be Be's Kids" attempted at fim making. How Cube gets over with these films sometimes I have no idea.Nia Long was looking good as usual.but she is wasted in this tacky turkey of a film.I give ice cube Pimp props for rolling the safe accessible films, because Bro Man ain't slowing down on His Hollywood roll, but this was so cliched it wasn't even funny. heck the first scenes jacked Home alone.I give Cube Parlay Props from rolling the Music Hustle&now the Movie Hustle, but in terms of Quality He is dropping skunks.
Not Good!
posted on 29 Jun 2009Are we there yet? is a road movie where Nick (Ice Cube) falls for a single mother Suzanne (Nia Long) and offers to get them to Vancouver in time for New Years eve. That's as deep as the plot goes!Aside from a few laughs, there is very little here to warrant your time or your money. The script is weak, the gags are predictable and the characters (despite trying to be interesting) are shallow and over used stereotypes.Avoid this and watch something else - Try Anger Management, Analyse This, Austin Powers, Animal House, American Pie, Airplane; These are just other comedies beginning with the letter 'A' that i can think of, and they are all way better than this.3/10
Not the best, definitely not the worst.
posted on 05 Jun 2009Well, the kids (to quote the PIONEER PRESS critic), should be tried as adults. Cube's character on the other hand is pretty childish. By the end of the movie, you have found out why he's that way, and the kids find out why being their way doesn't cut it in the world*. It's not the best thing in the realm of family movies, but it's not the worst either.Based on how Cube's character grows up, I would see the next movie he makes, and that's what he's looking for from us. Good work- I end up liking him by the end of the movie. Heck, I even end up liking the truck driverSPOILER: The kids dad should be horse whipped in a public square, the bastard. How on earth can you *do* that to two children that you've fathered, and put into the world?
Just Because Your Kids Like It, Doesn't Make it Good.
posted on 03 Jun 2009Watched most of the DVD, read some reviews here just to see if my impressions were way off, then finished watching the DVD.My first impression of the movie was formed within the first 5 minutes, and it barely changed after that. My first impression? "These kids are terrible actors!" Nia Long, pretty -- NOT gorgeous. Ice Cube? Cookie-cutter performance. See Sinbad in "First Kid" or Shaquille O'Neal in "Kazaam." My favorite character by far was the Satchel Paige bobble-head. There were less than half a dozen lines that got so much as a pseudo-laugh from me, and I am certain that those were just happy accidents.Throughout this clumsily scripted and directed feature (I just can't bring myself to call it a "film"), the idea of "standards" kept running through my head. It annoyed me that the people in charge of this thing were confident that there was an audience out there who would appreciate it, and also that there apparently IS an audience out there who would settle for such lackluster, ham-handed, clichéd, and low-budget crap, especially with the price of a movie ticket these days! I also do not appreciate it being made a "vehicle" for the dubious singing talents of the young actress who played Lindsay. People, get a grip. If you truly think this movie has any merit, you really need to broaden your horizons and see some real films.
This Movie was awesome
posted on 03 Jun 2009This movie definitely shows a different side of Ice Cube. It shows the more fatherly side to him. This movies was truly hilarious and whoever thinks that this is a bad movie apparently has no taste nor sense of humor. It is definitely different from the portrayal of ice cube we seen in the movie "Next Friday." I have recommend this movie to all of my friends and relatives. I strongly suggest for everyone to go see this movie.I mean i was afraid 2 get up and go to the concessions in fear of missing a part!!!!! This is a truly exciting, hilarious, entertaining, funny, not low budget, movie i have seen in a long time. EVERY ONE GO SEE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!
you're better off watching a radio
posted on 26 May 2009i have had my share of bad movies; but this one took the cake. ice cube should definitely never come back to the acting business and neither should the children. talk about horrible actors.this is your typical "its-not-really-funny-but-kids-laugh-at-everything-movie". nevertheless... the movie theater was packed with bored kids and irritated parents. the pranks were stupid and unrealistic and it seemed the plot was written with someone with the iq of a spoon. oh, and if i ever have to hear that girl sing anything ever again? i will rip out my ear drums.don't waste your money... or your time.
Blech!
posted on 23 May 2009I am so tired of all of these cookie cutter movies and what I mean by that is that they all have the same story and same predictable ending. The girl is attractive, the girl has kids, the kids don't want mom dating anyone else. They fight every guy that comes to date mom, but this one guy (Ice Cube) won't go away and then there is some additional drama in between and happily ever after. Blech! This movie was just silly. 1/4 of the way through the film I was bored, 1/2 way through the film, I was ready to shut it off, but I figured since I spent 1 hour of my time, I may as well finish it. This movie was just silly because there is no way on earth that any man would put up with those little whiny brats that long.
A good film endears you to the characters that way you can feel their pain and empathize, but these kids were terrible brats from the beginning and I just got more disgusted by their antics as the movie went on. All the money the man spent on that car and the brat puked all over it and made him run off cliffs, and the deer scene was just ridiculous.
Then the girl did a very bleak performance of RESPECT. Ugh! The irony of it is that that child had no respect for anyone so she had no business singing a song called RESPECT. That was so stupid to chose that song for her to sing.
I know it sounds like I am on a tirade, but I just can't stand this movie. It is just one of the worse movies I have spent my time watching. In my mind I was like "Is It Over Yet?" It was not enjoyable and the kids just made me mad cause the things they were doing were just so darn stupid. I know that in real life, kids do act out but it generally isn't funny when they do it. It isn't funny in this film either.
Enjoyable!
posted on 16 May 2009This film was a hilarious piece of work. In this film, Nick Persons played by Ice Cube falls in love with a woman. Everybody he knows tells him that it is not worth it. Persons does not believe them... until he meets her two kids. Persons and the kids end up having many crazy adventures. Ice Cube and the two children were good at their parts, there were some funny jokes, and the plot line was simple, but great. The three actors have great chemistry and they worked well with each other. The screenplay was kind of lame, but everything makes up for it. I recommend this movie for everybody. It's rated PG for language. I give this film a 8/10.
The worst child acting ever
posted on 12 May 2009I think it was an awful bad movie. The acting of Philip Bolden and Ice Cube was terrible bad. Why, oh why do they make these bad movies? Ice Cube were great in xXx State of the Union. In this movie where he plays this fool, his acting doesn't come to its right. He's great in a movie with few lines and little comedy. He needs to play characters with the right to swear and do criminal things. Philip Bolden is a child actor with no talent. When he tries to look like he's crying it only looks like he can't hold himself from laughing. And when he has a line the fun of the movie stops. They should have had another actor for this part. I'm sorry that I saw the whole movie, but that's me. Can't have an opinion if I've not seen the whole movie.
A Fun Family Comedy
posted on 10 May 2009Are We There Yet stars Ice Cube as a bachelor (Nick) and he meets a really pretty woman named Susan played by Nia Long. Nick does'nt know she has kids and then he feels as if he shouldn't be dating her because he really hates kids. Then Susan gets a call from her job and has to be there an so she asks her ex-husband if he can pick up the kids but he says he can't. She feels really bad that he can't make it so Nick says he'll pick up her kids and take them to where she is.Before seeing this movie I did'nt exactly wanna see it. I thought I was going to hate it. But I was wrong. The movie was'nt as bad as I thought it would be. It was actually pretty funny and some parts made me laugh. Ic Cube does a good job in this movie and I liked how I get so mad at the two kids. I recommend this movie to anybody who loves movies with kids causing mischief.
Love this movie
posted on 04 May 2009First of all, Ice Cube has got to be one of my favorite actors, I think he's sometimes overlooked for some great parts. He was perfect for this movie. Sometimes it's hard to find a good family movie that isn't animated...but this is one! There is some comedy and some moments in the move that tug your heart strings, all in all, LOVE IT! Whenever it's "on demand" my kids watch it all day long, and I really don't get too tired of it. Great casting, especially love Ice Cube and the 2 kids...all very talented. The movie is about a "player" kind of guy who falls for a divorced mother of two...the antics between Ice Cube and her kids are fantastic as he does the mom a favor to get her kids somewhere. And somewhere along the way, he learns whats really important in his life and what his life is missing.

SOMEWHAT BUMPY RIDE
posted on 29 Aug 2009While this movie has some funny moments, the problem with ARE WE THERE YET is that the kids are soooo bad, I never ended up liking them, even after their semi-metamorphosis. Having been the product of a broken home, my parent's divorce did nothing quite so drastic to our homelife. The kids are out and out mean, and this makes me thing Nia Long's mother didn't have the parenting skills to deal with being a single mom either. I found nothing "cute" about their behavior and don't really understand how Ice Cube put up with them as well as he did.
Touting this as a "family" movie is truly hypocritical, as it does nothing but give kids the go ahead to do mean and hateful things and then just laugh them off. Ice even manages to lose his very expensive Navigator and still wants to be a papa to the brats. I can't totally trash the movie, but I would not recommend it for any young children as it is certainly not the kind of movie I would want my little ones to see.
