A Great Script plus Great Acting Makes This a Great Movie
posted on 03 Aug 2009This is a great movie. It had a very funny script and the acting was spectacular. Jack Nicholson definitely deserved his third Oscar for this, he was funny and added the right to his character. Helen Hunt also deserved her Oscar she was excellent and also funny. Greg Kinnear was pretty good also, he deserved his nomination. I give this movie a 9 out of 10, I would give it a 10 its just that I could never give a romantic comedy a 10.
As Good As It Gets
posted on 31 Jul 2009The title is probably the most spot on title you'll hear. This movie is as good as it gets. This movie has flawless performances by Nicholson, Hunt, Kinnear, Knight, and Gooding Jr. The movie has a script that is so good it rivals scripts like American Beauty. As Good As It Gets is my second favorite movie of all time, just behind Jerry Maguire. That doesn't mean that it's the second BEST I've seen, but it certainly was the best film of the year, especially in a tough year. The Oscars were right on giving Nicholson and Hunt awards, I wish Kinnear had won. All in all this is a solid 10/10 film with it's charming humor and the times where you just want to hug yourself with delight. I recommend this to all film lovers.
I found this film to be highly overrated. The Helen Hunt character was extremely annoying, the Greg Kinnear character was one-dimensional, and the Cuba Gooding Jr. character was only slightly amusing. Jack Nicholson seemed to be a one man show. As for the direction, there were way too many cheesy zoom-in closeups. You know Hollywood expectations have really lowered when this film becomes such a hit.
Titanic beat this out??? Crazy?!?!
posted on 17 Jul 2009I am a teenage girl and I liked (okay was obsessed with) Titanic. But I saw As Good As it Gets before I saw Titanic and I never thought that Titanic should beat it out for the Oscar. Titanic was a total teeny-bopper movie. Very little plot and big suprise....everyone dies. In AGAIG, there were these crazy people who were brought together in the midst of New York and are all so very different and very funny that it takes you on this crazy 2 hour trip. And I just remember sitting there and watching wondering what was gonna happen. With Titanic, it wasn't very hard to guess. It was a totally awesome movie and I loved watching every minute of it, not to mention my role model and favorite actress Helen Hunt, did one of the best acting jobs in it I've ever seen in my life. It was amazingly funny, creative, and downright groovy.
Something for Everyone
posted on 04 Jul 2009My main quarrel with romance movies is that they are targeted for a specific audience (females 18-30) and from working in a video store that is the demographic who rents them. This movie I could watch with just about anyone, as it is a perfect balance of comedy, good drama, and romance, with great acting by everyone, and good directing as well. Call it a chick flick if you want, but it does not disappoint, 'Excuse me there are JEWS at my table' hahahahaha (by the way im jewish)

The usual elements
posted on 22 Jun 2009Cranky misogynist, an adorable dog, cute female lead, and a gay neighbor combined to produce a boring, disappointing piece of junk. I rented this for my late wife, who loved Nicholson, and I knew something was wrong when she sat stone faced through it, just as I did. Most of the film I could see what was coming down the track, but rather than surprise me, Brooks kept the train on schedule. Both wife and I got to the point where we did not want to see Nicholson redeemed, but we weren't spared.....and his redemption seemed so sudden, so 'hey it's time to be Mr. Nice now.'Of course we had that scene so beloved of directors: three people sitting in convertible, motoring down the highway with the top down, doing a sedate 35-40, and holding a normal conversation instead of trying to shout over the wind. 27 years before this excretion, Nicholson played the young Jonathan Fuerst in Carnal Knowledge, growing into a unrepentant middle age Lothario. Why didn't Brooks leave him that way? But don't blame the writer and director; it is the age which can't stand such heady fare.
Ingenious
posted on 17 Jun 2009I didn't like this all that much the first time I saw it. But it grows on you fast. It wasn't long before I loved it. It is one of those movies that you have to watch many times to absorb all the beauty and meaning of it. Jack Nicholson is fabulous in this movie, this is some of his absolute best work, besides the movie "The Shining". Nicholson is beyond stunning in this movie.
This movie has hilarity, gravity, significance, and emotion all rolled into one. This is a classic! A must-have to any worthy movie collection. And Jack plays the most perfect A-hole! No one could have done better.
Avoid, Avoid.
posted on 11 Jun 2009This movie is As Bad as it Gets. It is chock full of stock characters in predictable predicaments. I did not laugh once. The only character with any charm at all was the gay neighbor, who was savagely attacked by intruders, and then after his return from the hospital, verbally brutalized by his neighbor and rejected by his parents. If his story is comedy, who needs tragedy?
The premise of the movie was that the brittle, tactless writer (Jack Nicholson) was really a good guy "underneath it all." Unfortunately for the viewer, he was more cruel than cranky. After all, the only evidence that he was nicer than he seemed (never mind the oxymoron) was that he gave the waitress some money so that her ailing son could finally get house calls from earnest doctors after years of neglect by uncaring doctors and greedy HMOs. He, of course, was rich and did not miss the money anyway. Sound absurd? It was.
As for the love interest, this movie follows the classic formula of constant friction between the lover and the object of love which culminates in the realization that they don't hate eachother after all. The constant bickering is intended to create suspense. In this case, though, by the thirtieth time they come together and then are torn asunder by Jack Nicholson's insults, who cares? And why should the viewer root for them anyway? I personally am sick to tears of being asked to sympathize with the mean, old rich man who is trying to catch the beautiful sweet girl less than half his age.
Despite mighty attempts at clever repartee, the dialogue was tinny and shallow. At times, it caught my attention only because I could not believe it was for real. When Helen Hunt lost her temper at her future love interest (Jack -- at the time he was her restaurant patron) ("Don't you ever speak of my son that way!!") the glare in her eyes was so studied, it looked like she was play acting.
Disappointing
posted on 05 Jun 2009I was quite disappointed in this movie. Nicholson and Kinnear were okay. But generally, the acting was clumsy (that Helen Hunt beat out Judy Dench in "Mrs. Brown" for the best actress Oscar makes me sick), the writing was really clumsy, and the direction was really REALLY clumsy. You could almost feel the camera creak on its tripod during panning shots! There is some clever stuff in it. But overall, it was a half-baked, clunky film.
Nitpicking but
posted on 17 May 2009I've seen this movie several times now and enjoy it more with each viewing. Nicholson lives to play these types of characters, so no suprise there. Hunt is good, but not great. The suprise is just how good Kinnear is as an actor. In a movie with a level of detail that we're reminded each time Melvin steps on a crack, none of the other characters want to know Melvin's story. What's up with that? He's dying to tell it in the car ride to Baltimore, but isn't given the chance aside from mentioning small snippets of his father's dysfunction that are immediately interrupted by the others (perhaps Jack did have a soliloquy in that scene but it ended up on the cutting room floor). Maybe its just me, but if I found a wacko like Melvin helping me and becoming a friend, I'd want to know his story. Granted neither Carol's nor Simon's stories are elaborated upon, but they're stereotypical characters and not the central focus of the movie anyway. Melvin's a certifiable crazy who's a bestselling romance(?) author and pianist to boot. I just wish this hole in the script was filled. 8/10.
Very funny, moving, romantic, and touching movie
posted on 14 May 2009AS GOOD AS IT GETS, to me, is a very funny, moving, romantic, and touching movie. It really moved me at times. I thought Jack (Nicholson), Helen (Hunt), and Greg (Kinnear) all gave dazzling performances as Melvin Udall, Carol Connelly, and Simon Bishop. One of my favorite quotes of this film is, "Do you understand me, you crazy f***?" Also, I thought that Carol (Helen Hunt) and Melvin (Jack Nicholson) looked good in the attire they wore when they went out to dinner in Baltimore. In addition, when Simon (Greg Kinnear) yelled at Melvin when he came to his apartment, that REALLY made me smile and feel good. If you ask me, AS GOOD AS IT GETS is one of Jack Nicholson's finest movies. In conclusion To anyone who's a fan of Jack Nicholson, Helen Hunt, or Greg Kinnear, if you haven't seen AS GOOD AS IT GETS, I HIGHLY recommend it.
One of the worse films of the 90's!!
posted on 24 Apr 2009I don't get what was so interesting of this film. I tried tounderstand, but the characters act so stupid and so senile. The filmtries to have the actors and actresses show comedy, but they fail miserably. Where was the comedy relief or the romance? This film is awfully disappointing.
A lovely un-run-of-the-mill romantic comedy
posted on 14 Apr 2009While romantic comedies have been young lovers' territory (from When Harry met Sally to Sliding Doors), As Good As It Gets approaches romance from an older point of view. Jack Nicholson is suitably casted into this spitting, obsessive role, while Helen Hunt melts into her portrayal of Carol. Greg Kinnear, while not winning an Oscar, is also convincing while a brilliant supporting cast with Cuba Gooding Jr, Yeardley Smith and others keep the story going. Touching, sweet and at times funny, this romantic comi-drama is wonderful entertainment.
Overrated
posted on 14 Apr 2009What 's all the fuss about ? This is one of the most mediocre films I have ever seen . See it for yourself and judge . The characters wereextremely underdevelopped . The script had many flaws . Instead of having a solid story and characterisation , the movie relies on SkeetUlrich 's naked ass and some wannabe dramatic quarrels between Nicholson and Hunt which fail miserably , like in the restaurant .
Anyway Jack Nicholson gives a solid and satisfying performance and that is a major pro . He is not over the top but he plays his anti social character tactfully . Unfortunately Helen Hunt is AWFUL !!!!!!! Yes you read right awful , terrible and irritating . I can 't believe how bad performance this was and I really don 't think this is the writer 's fault . She competes Holly Hunter in "Copycat" for the worst performance in film history . Cuba Guding Jr has a brief cameo and somehow steals the show with his dynamic personna .
If there is a reason to watch this film it is indisputably Greg Kihnear . He manages to create soul and emotion for his character and he is the only lead whom you care about . You are heartbroken when he is beaten savagely and you care for his fate . Apart from Kihnear the film hasn 't much to offer . I am shocked with these positive commentsand with the 7.7 average rating !!! If you want a good social characters comedy , watch the REAL BLONDE with Mathew Mondine . This film gets a healthy
6 / 10
Better than TITANIC
posted on 11 Apr 2009I am a huge Jack Nicholson fan. His performance in THE SHINING is awesome. I was skeptical if he could play in a romantic comedy/ drama. He teams up very nicely with Helen Hunt in this well-written romance. The opening scene in the movie immediately sets up what a loathesome person Nicholson's character is. James L. Brooks (the director and co-writer) did a masterful job in showing you that you will be watching a person who is not well-liked. I did think Nicholson's obsessive compulsive disorder was skipped over too much. This movie had warmth, alot of great scenes and segments (the whole segment at the Baltimore restaurant is wonderful), and a nice uplifting ending. It deserved the Oscar for best picture more than TITANIC. I highly recommend this movie(especially with a date).

huh?
posted on 27 Aug 2009I can't understand the raves this one got. The relationship between Nicholson and Hunt is unconvincing, unlikely, improbable, incredible, unbelievable, and any other synonym you can come up with. It simply doesn't ring true that she could possibly tie up with him after the wretched treatment he dished out to her. And as their relationship is the main line of the story, that doesn't leave much else. I gave it a 4.
