Half and half

posted on 29 Aug 2009

This is, to be fair, a three and a half star movie.

I love Mike Myers. I think he's one of the funniest, most inventive guys ever. The first two Austin Powers movies were really entertaining, even if the second one had moments of toilet humor. The first half of this third movie in series is just great; it's got a terrific opening sequence with a movie about the movie. There's the introduction of Goldmember, Mike's latest lunatic character creation who is hilarious, quoting lyrics and, in asides, naming the songs they're from. Beyonce is gorgeous--a perfect James Bond female; and the usual crew is on hand. Dr. Evil carrying Mini-me like a new mother makes a terrific first appearance. In other words, all the stuff we love about the Powers movies is there.

Then comes the second half and we get endless toilet humor. I noticed all the little boys in the audience howling happily, just loving every bodily-function joke. But the adults were groaning with dismay, even disgust, at the material. The movie sputters to an end, then partly redeems itself with out-takes during the end credits.

If you loved the first two movies, go see this one with lowered expectations. That said, it's worth seeing just for the great first half.

The Worst Movie of the Year

First of all I'm a huge Mike Myers fan. I loved the Waynes World movies and Austin 1 and 2. But I feel something went terribly wrong here. This movie doesn't have one single laugh to its name. There's only one person to blame for this mess and that is of course Mike Myers. He does a terrible job at playing his own characters. His Dr. Evil isn't even Dr. Evil anymore. It's just Mike myers with makeup. He doesn't inhabit Dr. Evil's mannerisms that made the first two so funny. He just recycles the jokes from the first two. And worst of all AUSTIN DOESN'T SHAG IN THIS MOVIE. What's up with that. And don't get me started on Beyonce Knowles. Her performance makes Heather Graham look like Meryl Streep. The character Goldmember is disgusting, not funny. The twist at the end is enough to make anyone who likes this series ashamed that they paid money to watch this mess.

It's time Mike Myers puts Austin to rest for good. Any movie that has a dance sequence with Britney Spears at the beginning is pretty desperate for laughs. Most people that say that they like this movie don't want to admit how disappointing it is. It's truly terrible. I didn't go to the movies for four months after seeing this. I was that disappointed. If you like the first two Austin movies, don't watch this by any means. You'll lose respect for the whole franchise and filmmaking itself. Avoid this movie at all costs.

It's more of a blast from the past.

Here we are into the third installment of "Austin Powers" and sadly it is wearing thin. We don't have the same originality that the first one brought or the usually funny jokes. Now while the ideas were good and it seemed strong, it just didn't give. The beginning is classic and it seemed like this was going to be great. I mean, we have Tom Cruise playing Austin Powers, Kevin Spacey as Dr. Evil, John Travolta as Goldmember, and Danny Devito as Mini Me in the Austin Powers movie! Just great and brilliant. But then the actual movie starts, Felicity is not here for no explained reason and Austin is single. Leading him to Foxxy Cleopatra, played by Beyonce and is way too stereotypical. Fat Bastard is also back and tries too hard with his disgusting jokes that fall flat.Dr. Evil is still pretty funny, but again just loosing his touch. We have a brilliant idea of Michael Caine as Austin's dad, but it's a hit and miss with Caine's dull performance. Goldmember, also played by Myers, is just too disgusting and tries too hard to impress the audience as another funny villain. Scott has now decided to take over the family business, which takes his cool and unique style away. :( Mini Me is push aside then from Dr. Evil and he joins up with Austin to try again for that "shocking and ironic" laugh of him now being a Mini Austin. The ending is just ridicules.I'm sorry, this just didn't amuse me that much. The jokes were overused and not funny any more. There are too many stereotypical performances in here and the only thing worth watching is the beginning with the amazing cameo's. That was unforgettable, but the rest is just a skip. So, pass on this one, guys, it's not worth your time really.6/10-and 4 points of that goes to the beginning!

Stupid, Rude and Funny

Austin Powers is back and is as dumb as ever - maybe even dumber. I went to see it expecting some laughs, some groaners and a good dose of toilet humour. That's what I got - including the laughs! It wasn't as funny as the second installment, but it was still more than worth the viewing. The first couple minutes of the movie are the best part, but the rest of it is still a good time. The actors all look like they're just having a good time playing these ridiculous people.

Funnier Than #2

I found this movie to be more entertaining than the 2nd installment so in that sense it was an improvement, however I would like to know why Beyonce was cast in this film? She is atractive, yes, but so is a good portion of Hollywood women and believe it or not-- Black Hollywood women if that is what their aim was. But alas, I have chalked it up to some good dealing with through her management and tried to look beyond her role at the overall movie. It was decent and I did laugh enough to say it is worth renting. Owning the DVD, on the other hand, is for those who want the deleted scenes which they did a god job of packaging.

better than the first not as good as the second

The first 20 minutes or so was boring. My daughter and I waited for a long time for this installment and after 10 minutes we looked at each other and rolled our eyes. HOWEVER, it got better. There are some very funny scenes. Fat bastard wasn't in it as much as I hoped and the gold member character is kinda boring. Mini-me was very funny. Michael Caine was ok, not as funny as I had hoped, the cameos were pretty funny. Heather Graham was not in the movie they must have cut her out. Speilberg was pretty funny. The movie pokes fun at everything, even itself as a sequel.

This movie has "mojo," baby!

posted on 16 Aug 2009

I found that Goldmember really had "mojo" in this sequel to the Austin Powers trilogy. I also find it very creative that the writers are able to take titles from Bond films and twist it into something quite humorous and would be up the alley of any swinger. It is hard to believe that all of the characters that Mike Myers portrays are really him. Each one has such a different personality, that only a multi-talented person such as Myers could pull it off. Austin Powers still knocks them dead in this movie. Dr. Evil is back and is still as funny as ever. Fat Bastard returns with his disgusting characteristics that are so gross, you have to laugh. Myers' newest character Johan Van Der Smut, aka Goldmember doesn't totally cut it. He just wasn't funny.I found that Beyonce Knowles was rather sexy in Goldmember. But the whole "sugar" quote that she would constantly use got rather annoying quite quickly. Michael Caine was absolutely hilarious. He fit the whole swinging spy part, and even gave off a fatherly vibe. He was wonderful.I have to recommend this movie for anyone who likes to laugh. If you do not laugh at this movie, then you have some problems. Check yourself into a proctologist and relieve yourself, because this movie is FUNNY!

It's the best yet baby, YEAH!!!!!!!

I have seen this twice now, its that good :). New jokes, new characters and a great scene at the beginning featuring a movie that steven speilberg is making about "Austin Powers" called "Austinpussy", starring Tom Cruise as Austin, Gwenyth Paltrow as Dixy normas, Kevin spacey as Dr. Evil and even funnier.... Danny devito as Mini Me.As far as the plotline goes.... Austins dad has been kidnapped by "Goldmember" (again played by Myers) and Austin has to use Dr. Evil to find out where he is. So Austin travels back to 1975 and gets help from Foxy Cleapatra (destinys child's Beyonce knowles). At the same time, Scott evil (Dr Evils son) is turning evil and Mini me is feeling outcast as Dr Evil is spending more time with his son. So Mini me decides to help Austin (brilliant scene with a mini-austin).Excellent movie. Only one little problem. I don't think that goldmember was used enough. Given time I think he will be a brilliant character.

Funny in places but disappointing overall

Went to see this expecting the film to be better than the other two... but unfortunately I didn't find this to be the case. There are funny jokes, but there seems to be a fair amount of re-used material. The main thing that's missing is the set-piece scenes of the other two. The storyline is also somehow a bit weaker, and there's less spoofing of the genre.Enjoyable, but I think you'll be disappointed!

Jumbled, cheap, exploitative, greedy trash

posted on 08 Aug 2009

Mike Myers is developing something of an Anti-Midas touch. Everything he touches, he cheapens. Jokes, plotlines, respectable actors credibility, everything. The seedy decline of the Austin Powers franchise slides to a disgusting new low in Myer's latest desperate cash in attempt in Austin Powers: Goldmember. I won't ruin it for you, but I feel I owe you the advice...DO NOT SEE THIS FILM. The horror begins with a cheap, insencire cameorgy with uncomfaratable, hurried performances from actors painfully doing Myers a BIG favour. After that...well...coherence kind of crumbles away and yields to a disturbing collage of nonsencial, recycled, disgusting and sometimes frankly rather disturbing idiocy. Dr. Evil isn't funny. Austin Powers has lost all of his appeal entirely. His character has been reduced to a ring announcer in a circus of forced humour. He gleefully displays products for dozens of franchises, awkwardly shouts about the famous actors that have shown up for cameos, and looks generally more like Mike Myers in odd clothing than a fictional character. There was something about the original character as compared to this new, pseudo-self obsessive Michael Myers that made the whole 60s british swinger character original and hilarious. Dr. Evil and Austin Powers were JUST as hilarious. Now we have seen a disgusting degeration of talent. I felt raped by this movie. I felt ripped off, and I think Michael Myers owes me $6. He didn't have the right to do this to me. I can't get back those two hours I spent in front of that product placement laden feces party. The new character, Goldmember, is disgusting, offensive and disturbing. It is Myers trying to force humour from a situation that does not warrant any. Enough said. This is a shudderingly awful travesty of a film, and should never have been made. Take me seriously, it's a waste of your time.

Eh, sure, baby. Sure.

Okay, I suppose "Goldmember" is fun enough. I loved the first "Austin Powers" movie, and was disappointed by the second one. So, expecting very little here, I enjoyed this one fine. The thing is, like the "Naked Gun" series, when you watch all three movies, they kind of run together. I like both series, but what I mean is that there's not much to differentiate this entry from it's predecessors. Non-tall people are given a more favorable light... almost, and Scott Evil -my favorite character- hardly does anything this time out. Anyway, this is a perfectly good "let's bring the whole gang to the dollar theater" movie. Now, let's talk about that "Two Towers" trailer...

Quite funny!

I saw this movie a few days ago and I enjoyed it. There's a lot more jokes and surprises in this one. I don't think this one is a lot better than the first two because a lot of the jokes are very similar to the first two movies. I give Mike Myers credit for making a good sequel and for playing all the characters very well. Give this movie a chance, you might like it. YEAH BABY YEAH!

Very decent comedy

Flashy, Funny, and Favorable when compared the the previous two installments.Austin Powers is pitted against Dr. Evil yet again to save his father (Caine) with the aid of Foxxy Cleopatra (Knowles). Michael Caine is a great addition to the series and brings a great amount of credibility to the character, not to mention the resemblance. Beyonce's performance is adequate, and Seth Green's character has a bit of a larger role, though I wish it was bigger because he is hilarious as Evil's son. Let's not forget to mention Fred Savage as "The Mole", a funny character that they made sure not to show us too often so the mole joke never dies. There are great cameos and an excellent production design (Evil's new submarine lair is by far the best).Bottom line is, if you like comedies that aren't dark or just plain silly, you'll like this movie because it is somewhere in between.

It seems that a lot of the comments are jumping on the popularity bandwagon, Goldmember is sparodically funny, but not a patch on the first 2, goldmember himself is just not funny at all, and the cinema i was in, his lines were met with a stoney silence. Once again Dr evil and Mini Me stole the show, but its about time Austin himself was laid to rest.

Keeps me wanting more (MANY SPOILERS!!!!!)

When critics slam a comedy and on top of that a SEQUEL of being derivative and regurgitated it makes me wanna hurl, to quote Mike Myers's other alter ego Wayne Campbell.First, of all this Austin movie got back to basics in certain ways in that one of the characters actually dies so we do actually think Dr. Evil lives up to his name. Beyonce Knowles was also actually a breath of fresh air because she wasn't over-involved and unfunny like Heather Graham her character had her place and didn't try to be too funny. Most of 'Felicity Shagwell's' problems were that she was like a female Austin and that really wasn't funny. Now, to the derivative factor....riiight, First, of all they acknowledged how derivative some of the humor is both with the very funny Ozzy Osbourne cameo and then they made the joke ANYWAY by cutting back to back to Johnson, the radar guy. Then there's also Scott getting annoyed at another 'Zip it' session and he refuses to talk, which is slightly different. Goldmember just proves Mike Myers is having fun with his own material and isn't afraid to twist the tail of a cliche or re-hash one of his old jokes in a new situation. Not to mention that these movies started by poking fun at 60s Spy film, James Bond in particular which, are pathetically redundant and too stupid to notice it in the first place. A lot of the funniest things that have happened in these films are jokes I KNEW were coming but were funny anyway like, The Lucky Charms jokes in the first or 'You shut up you bastard...who is fat." and in this one of course Mr. RobotoMy greatest fear was that there were too many people in this movie but it ended up being groundless. All of the characters were around just enough for us to get what we needed of them ala Frau's 'Yah's'. There's also alot that's new and hysterical in this film. The title character Goldmember like many of the new characters isn't there as often but it quite hysterical. When Dr. Evil couldn't understand what he was he was saying about Austin's "Fajerr" I was laughing so much I couldn't breathe. These characters also changed I think people have to look beyond the punchlines and see how these characters are acting. Mini-Me switched allegiances from Dr. Evil to Austin, Dr. Evil bonded with Scott and then through the hilarious "Harry Potter" style flashbacks the paternity question is answered and there's all kinds of changes at the end. And of course there's Scott at the end...Fat Bastard's scenes are great! ("Too bad my neck looks like a ..." well, you know if you saw it) And the fact that Austin Powers spoofed itself with the movie with in a movie is great. Spielberg doing the cartwheels is probably the best part of the movie? Or was it Tom Cruise saying 'Yeah, baby'? All in all this is just as funny as the first two if not more so. Another thing people need to realize is that the catch phrases aren't born overnight. It's repeated viewing that got me saying 'Mooovie' and "Riiight' the creators realize these little niche jokes have grown and, thus, Dr. Evil's "S@#&!" is back!Yes, too many movies are unoriginal and derivative.Yes, there are too many sequels. No matter what though the Austin Powers movies always seem to find new territory to cover and for all of you complainers if and when there is a fourth film it looks like it will be quite different than the first three doesn't it. Basically, I guess many people think you can get enough of a good thing, while that's true that doesn't keep me from wanting more.

What the heck?!

Most people in this world are busy, so I will not wase your time. Let me start off by saying that this movie is very poor. Sure the begining is pretty good, but then it justs gets weaker and weaker. The ending is just plain BAD. There is no other word for it. Dr. Evil turns out to be Austin's brother?! What's up with that? If you really want to, rent it. I would never wase my money on...like this.

Absolutely Pee-Your-Pants Funny

Its hard to write a long review about this movie, but a few things need to be said. This is the funniest Austin Powers ever, too many cameos to remember (believe me, these are hilarious cameos!!!) Beyonce is excellent, better than I thought she would be, I dont agree with the guy who says she is fat, she is PERFECT!!!!......and a great actress for her first time. Hands down best Austin Powers, many surprises, gotta see it!!!

Not as good as the others

posted on 25 Jul 2009

Austin Powers in Goldmember was definetly not as good as the other two. Goldmember was very funny and had a pretty good plot though it reused jokes from the last movie. The movie overall was okay. If it was just another movie that wasn't a sequel it would have been better. Since it was a sequel, I expected more from it. This movie just didn't have what I expected.Pros: Goldmember had an extreamly funny and cleverly directed beginning. Very funny.Cons: Reused Jokes. Plot was pretty good, but not as good as I thought it would be.Overall: 3 out of 5 stars

Tired?

posted on 23 Jul 2009

This movie struck me as very tired. The jokes were old, the characters seemed comfortable... the whole film seemed to be on auto-pilot. Sad, because Mike Meyers and Beyoncé are very talented leads and shouldn't be wasted. The saving grace? Miss Knowles -- she had the best lines, best delivery and seemed the most awake.

First two far outshined this one!

posted on 23 Jul 2009

I wouldn't completely throw this one away, but I really did feel disappointed when I finished watching Goldmember. This one just really didn't have the same strong spark that the first two had. I loved the first two. The beginning of Goldmember was pretty funny, but everything just seemed to slide downhill from there and stay there. There were a few moments that got a laugh out of me every now and then, but not too much.
I've always like Mike Myers. I think he's a very talented comedian, but I just didn't feel that this one worked out. Hopefully, if there is a fourth Austin Powers movie coming, I'll like that one a whole lot more. I always hate to see a good series get killed by the last one in it!
