very good movie. very etertaining, jessica alba's hot as usual :)

When I first saw the trailer to this movie I was psyched and excited right away. Just the fact that I get to see Hayden Christensen and Jessica Alba on screen again is a huge honor. They are both amazing actors(actress) and they each did a stellar and magnificent job performing. Even though the movie was short, in fact, it was pretty short, it was quite entertaining. I was into the movie from start to finish, I didn't yawn once...and when Hayden was under the knife, I was completely hooked into the movie waiting for the next scenes to happen wondering what exactly would happen. Honestly, to be perfectly honest, I really enjoyed this movie. I'd recommend it. And the beauty of it all was that it wasn't a horror at all, it wasn't scary at all, it was a thriller, it was a drama. Also seeing Terrence Howard again on film, which by the way he's been doing a great job making so many films, seriously, he's doing like 2-3 films a year or something, which is friggin' amazing. So seeing him in it definitely was a bonus addendum. Each actor/actress did a superb job taking on the character's role and showing the specific emotions. And Jessica Alba's body, wow, o-m-g, is unbelievably hot. I was surprised at some of her scenes, i'm not going to ruin it for anyone who hasn't already seen it but she does her role very very well. this movie for sure deserved a 7. the reason why it didn't deserve an 10, obviously was because it was too dang short, and the ending could've been done slightly different. for those who have seen it you know what i mean but for those who haven't if you do see it which i'd recommend, you'll understand what i mean.

Such a waste of time

Going into this movie, I knew it was going to be crap. The two main actors just aren't good in anything.Hayden Christianson is absolultely horrible in anything he ever does. Jessica Alba, a smoking hot woman, is better than Christianson but still even she cant act to save her life. OK on to the story. Awake is about a businessman having to undergo surgery and he's one of the few people that don't go totally under. Yet he cant move or wake up to let these doctors know. Unfortunately the doctors have ulterior motives and so Christianson is stuck being the pawn in the doctors game. The premise itself is intriguing. I think it would have been a better movie had the script been better and the studio had found better actors. I heard somewhere that Jared Leto had been in the role but he quit. He would have probably saved the movie. such a waste of time

Someone (or everyone) told about the similarities about Awake and The Invisible, so I just got inside this movie kinda "prepared".The movie started very, very slow, almost stopping, but somewhere in the middle (just this spoiler...) it shines a lot! Specially in the end!Hayden Christensen wasn't the best one, I think Terrence Howard and Lena Olin that ones made me give 7 to this movie. I love Fisher Stevens, but he didn't appear enough.Hey, and Jessica Alba doesn't need to open her mouth. Sexy! Very sexy! But she isn't the kind of actress for this movie. She's best at Fantastic Four or Sin City...

. . . and then the soap opera went horribly, horribly wrong.

In the past two years, more than any time in cinema history, indie films have grown in popularity. Though some of them are out-right brilliant, there is also the indie films that just copy the big names and film them with lower production value. The second category I just mentioned has nearly become an indie sub-genre. Awake essentially fits here. Though it got a wide release—only God knows how—it's still an indie film in style and direction, and though it appears fresh and original—to the average viewer—it is really just formulaic and predictable. And painfully boring. Above all the harsh criticism I'm about to deal out, the uninteresting factor is my biggest problem with this film. Awake attempts to take a single plot point—waking up during surgery—and stretch it out for an absolutely ridicules amount of time. If the movie actually focused solely on the plot, it would be fifteen minutes long at most. Yes, there are some middle-school-English-class plot twists, which aren't necessarily predictable, just cliché and laughable. (More on that later.) But the plot twists add nothing to the fact that this movie is literally just a mash up of repeated sequences that repeat over and over to the point of nausea. The sceenplay must have looked something like this: "Operating room; girlfriend; waiting room; ghost scene; operating room; girlfriend; waiting room; ghost scene—(oh, screw it, I'm tired of writing this stupid script, let's just wing it, okay?)" Without exaggerating, you'll see the same scene at least fifteen times. The only changes are the character's facial expressions. Though the run time is relatively short, you'll feel like you just spent an eternity (in hell) watching this movie. And did I mention they added random shots of Alba posing for what looks like a music video on the beach for no reason at all? The plot itself, as I said, it juvenile. Anyone who knows anything above English class storytelling could tell you that. Instead of having carefully planned out plot twists, you have random reversal-of-expectations that are so over-the-top I thought I was watching a soap opera that just went horribly wrong. It's the same extent of saying, "Hi, my name is Bob! . . . APRIL FOOLS! My name is really Larry." It leaves you thinking, "Yeah, okay, so what?" I usually would have nothing against this formula, however, except Awake does it so cheaply. Instead of realistic shock value—your baby dies in it's sleep—you have cheap thriller plotting—a terrorist stole your baby, go save him! It's hilarious, not shocking. Not to mention when the plot twist is reviled, it's just a standard cliché.Acting is unintentional hilarious, and I usually don't even notice bad acting. The voice-overs from Hayden Christensen are almost a self-parody.Overall, Awake is just like every other over-the-top thriller you've seen before. It's not Saw or even The Usual Suspects, it's a bad soap opera. And it's probably one of the most boring movies ever made.0/10

What a waste of a movie. This film is full of stupid clichés such as a drunk doctor and his flask hanging out. Oh yeah, how about the too good to be true wife? Or better yet, the overbearing mother who cannot let go of her son. Everything about this movie is garbage. No one can wonder why this trash sat on the shelf for a couple of years before being published. Hayden Christensen and Jessica Alba are not good at acting, and they prove it BIG TIME in this movie. I think the only reason why people are rating this movie so high is because of a psychological condition known as "brand new" syndrome. Just because it just came out, doesn't mean you should call it the greatest movie of all time. Save your money folks!

"The Telltale Heart" re-dux

"Awake" is a new medical thriller that's out to exploit a rare phenomenon that occurs in apparently one in 70,000 people each year. "Awake" attempts to depict the medical phenomenon known as "anesthesia awareness," in which patients during surgery who are under the influence of general anesthesia "wake up" during the procedure but are paralyzed and are unable to communicate in any way to the doctors operating on them. It's a terrifying occurrence in which the individual is completely aware of their ordeal but cannot do anything about it.Makes me think twice about ever going under the knife. But regardless of any reputed medical inaccuracies present in the film, it doesn't change the fact that this is still a fairly gripping and quite intelligent thriller, written and directed by a newcomer, a Brit named Joby Harold. The phenomenon of anesthesia awareness was not lost upon me when I first began reading about this film, but similar films in the past have played with the notion of people near Death's door but cannot communicate with their would-be gravediggers."Awake" concerns a New York City executive, Clay Beresford, Jr. (Hayden Christensen), who has inherited his late father's financial business. Under the thumb of his overly protective mother Lilith (Lena Olin), Clay is hesitant to reveal the details of his engagement to Sam Lockwood (Jessica Alba) to her, who looks at Sam with a slight distrust. Matters are further complicated by Clay's ailing heart, and he desperately needs a new ticker (because he's the hero of the story, he doesn't have to be on a waiting list). Well, hope does come along in the form of a new heart, and Clay's close surgeon friend Jack (Terrence Howard) is going to be performing the operation, much to Lilith's dismay that her trusted surgeon Dr. Neyer (Arliss Howard) do it.Anyway, Clay opts for Jack over Neyer, causing a rift with his mother. All goes well at the beginning of the surgery, with Clay gently coming under the influence of general anesthesia. But a mishap occurs a quarter of the way through and he wakes up, completely aware of his surroundings. Needless to say, the horror that he wakes up to - the doctors joking about a Knicks game, the doctors cutting open his chest, the sounds of them cutting it open and removing his heart - is far from anything we hope to experience ourselves. It's at this point that the movie begins to mix genres - the horror film, the medical thriller, the supernatural thriller, and the murder mystery (!) - as Clay finds himself disembodied and wandering around the hospital in a deathly daze, later discovering that he's the victim of a horrific conspiracy to off him while still on the operating table. Eventually, too, he comes face-to-face with past and present, and how they're affecting his life now that he's *this* close to Death's door. But this is not a typical thriller, and although there is some disturbingly realistic footage of surgery here, there is nothing along the lines of modern torture-fests such as "Saw" or "Hostel.""Awake" is unique in its premise and ability to mix things up a little bit, just to give us a new spin on seemingly old material. For this thriller, the writer/director Joby Harold has created something that's a little bit different from what we're used to seeing on a weekly basis. The film has an incredible build-up that really allows us to connect with some of the characters, especially Clay, who is played with rather strong conviction by Mr. Anakin Skywalker himself, Hayden Christensen. He hasn't gotten a good rap from critics in recent years, but I saw in his performance here the makings of a strong and capable performer. There are scenes, especially the surgery scenes, where we're really there with him, listening to his panicked narration as he hears doctors slicing him open while the only thing that he can do is just lay there and do nothing."Awake" kept me wide awake throughout its remarkably short running time (roughly 80 minutes). The film allowed itself to build up nicely to create an experience that's all too nightmarish to be real, but the terrifying thing is that "Awake" is a movie that is very much real and could happen to any one of us.8/10

I heard a few rumors about this movie and all were mixed, but I can honestly say that this was one of the better movies I've seen in a long time. The whole movie puts you on edge. With disturbing scenes and plot twists this movie was surprisingly well directed and extremely well done. The choice of camera angles and lighting effects just adds to the beauty of the film. Oddly enough the costume choices were different then most but very pleasing to the eye. The actors were well chosen even though both were not originally cast in the movie. Jessica Alba blew everyone away with this character and Hayden Christensen's dialect added a certain something to the movie as a whole. The characters were completely developed and well researched. :D Overall very well done.

Avoid learning anything about this film and you may end up liking it

I'm with Roger Ebert, know as little as possible about the movie and you may have a good time. Unfortunately the poster, the commercials and some of the reviews have revealed too much. The basic plot has a rich guy falling in love with a girl and marrying, despite his mother's protests. He needs a transplant and is insisting on going to his doctor instead of his mother's preferred surgeon. As he finally goes under the knife he finds that he's paralyzed but still awake. As Mother and wife bicker in the waiting room he has to contend with the fact that he's wide awake. There's more but thats the story.Several good actors, Terrence Howard, Fisher Stevens and Lena Olin among them have to play second bananas to two of Hollywood's greatest non-actors Hayden Christensen and Jessica Alba. While Neither Alba nor Christensen are really bad here they don't exactly leap off the screen and are more bland than anything. Certainly they aren't helped by a script that is convoluted and is interesting because its seems its being made up on the fly.Worth 11 bucks per head to see in a theater? I think not. This is more a watch once on cable on a slow night sort of movie. Frankly its an okay suspense movie but it could have been so much better...

This movie is the prime example of what is wrong with Hollywood, bad writers. This movie had an interesting premise, but it was ruined by bad writing. The cast was fine and very few movies are ruined by the actors. Sure the direction can be off but its mostly the writing that makes a movie good or bad. This one was just bad. It was funny where it wasn't supposed to be, unsuspenseful when it was suppose to be and just plan dumb. Writers at least good ones don't insult their audience by having people do really dumb things. Every character in this movie turned out to be doing things that were incredibly stupid. I guessed everything before it happened and was really put off by the ending. 4/10

So bad it's fun to watch.

It should be no spoiler that this movie is about a guy who is conscious during his own heart surgery. The anesthesia simply doesn't work as intended. As horrifying as that is, I was never pulled into the plot enough to believe someone was really experiencing the horror they were trying to convey. The narration was critical in this movie and at no point was that narration convincing.Hayden Christensen playing Clay Beresford does nothing in this movie to expand upon his acting ability. He plays the same brooding character that he played in the Star Wars movies. His performance wasn't bad, it just wasn't persuasive or convincing.Jessica Alba playing Sam Lockwood is his beautiful girlfriend. Jessica Alba does a great job in her role, but it doesn't redeem the rest of the movie. This movie does have an interesting plot, but it tries to be clever a little too late in the plot and the ending is not very plausible. The ending takes benign elements of the plot and tries to make them relevant just a little too late. Instead of being amazed or shocked, I was just rolling my eyes and laughing to myself.I found this movie to be so poorly written and presented that it was funny. Jessica Alba could not save the movie, but she was definitely eye candy for the guys that might be yawning otherwise. I don't regret seeing the movie, but I can't honestly recommend that others spend their money to see it. I would say it's not worth seeing in the movie theater or buying the DVD. Wait until this hits cable if you really are intrigued. My rating of 7 is based upon the fact it held my attention and it made me laugh.

"He...is...awake"

AWAKE is a film which mixes thriller with drama in a plot about a multimillionaire that has a very problematic disease in his heart and needs to do a very risky surgery. The plot is not straight because it's full of twists, and nothing really is as it seems at the first sight. However, at parts, I think the film loses some credibility because it tries to be more "twisted" and "surprising" than it should be to have the mentioned full credibility. However it's nicely entertaining and provokes some tension in the viewer. Besides it delivers the thriller genre to a setting that is not too explored: the surgery table! I think it was the most innovative feature of this film, and I didn't know, for instance, that is possible that a person stills awake (feeling and hearing everything but without moving or expressing anything!) receiving general anesthesia! It must be horrible! I can't even imagine, it's like you are being cut in cold blood but with the "bonus" that you can't even scream! It must be really painful! It could have been better at parts, but all in all I think the movie is interesting, so I score it 7/10.

Possibly the best thriller in 2007

Awake a story about clay a boy who is going through a heart transplant and how the truth unfolds through the course of it.The movie should be rated really highly as we don't get medical thrillers often. The starting 20 minutes of the movie is really the back drop as to what is going to happen and as you watch the movie you will be shocked, surprised by the turn of events on the surgery table.Clay comes to know that he is going to be killed on the table. He has a out of body experience which lets him find out why is he going to be killed during the surgery. The movie deceives you completely as you see the story unfold in a way that will leave you surprised in many ways.Hayden christen does a very good job as clay.Jessica alba perfectly fits the bill for the role of clays wife and acts as the surprise packet in the movie .The direction, editing and the cinematography of the movie is really good as the director does not waste a single minute in creating the suspense and maintaining the momentum throughout the movie.Watch awake if you want to be deceived by what you are going to see.You will throughly enjoy it if you like thrillers.

I don't have much to say. I didn't know anything about this movie before I saw it, neither did I expect anything special. For the first 40 minutes of the movie it didn't feel like it had anything really special to offer. But when you realized what it was about and how it finally panned out, I was very happy I saw it and the ending sequence sent chills down my spine. At first the plot seemed secondary and I thought this movie was just about exploiting the idea of being awake while surgery. Luckily it wasn't.Maybe not really 10/10, but I finish like one of five movies I start and in my books, this was special.

A surprisingly good thriller

There are those movies that when you first hear about them you either think a) waste of time no matter what or b) a way to waste some time before doing something more interesting. Now the latter doesn't make such a movie a classic but what it can lead to is an enjoyable experience you may otherwise not have had if you had simply stayed away. Awake is one such movie that is surprising both in its plot but also the mode in which it tells the story. Clay Beresford (Hayden Christensen) is the son and heir to one of New York's most powerful financial institutions which is his own father had built up before his sudden death. Intelligent, popular, and a wise businessman, Clay is someone who literally has the whole world before him. With his mother Lilith (Lena Olin) by his side he has not just a parent but a wise business partner to help guide him through world of high corporate business. However, there is one catch if not a cruel trick played by fate. Clay suffers from a weak heart that could take his life before he has even reached his father's age. After an earlier heart attack brought him into contact with Dr. Jack Harper (Terrence Howard), Clay is convinced to undergo a heart transplant. The choice is one that would devastate anyone but his new friendship with Dr. Harper convinces Clay that he does have a chance to live. While Lilith is appalled by the choice (she has her own choice who Clay refuses more out of a sense of wanting independence from a loving but otherwise burdensome mother), Clay is determined to have the surgery.Clay has another reason to want to live besides his mother and the family company. After Sam Lockwood (Jessica Alba) was hired on as a personal assistant for his mother, Clay and Sam both start a secret affair which he is careful to hide from his mother. Only after he announces their relationship to his mother (who of course is horrified by the choice of Sam as a wife for her only son), Clay convinces Sam to have a sudden wedding the day before he goes into surgery. Their love is now open without anything to hide and he wants her waiting for him when he done with surgery so they can start the life they have planned. However, during the preparations for surgery, something goes wrong. Clay suffers from what is known as "anesthetic awareness" which is the ability to remain conscience during surgery while under the knife. He can feel every cut made into him, every bone sawed apart or broken, and the sensation of metal clamps opening his chest up. The horror of such an experience is unfathomable and Clay is one of the few who must endure it which he does by only focusing on the memories of Sam.Clay discovers something even more terrible then "anesthetic awareness". Not only does he feel the cut of a blade but he can hear perfectly and only then does he discover the conspiracy that his good friend Dr. Harper has built. A conspiracy that not only involves everyone on the surgery team but is focused entirely on his death in order to gain millions for themselves. And how might they profit off his death? Through his new wife Sam who is very much a part of the plan and has been from the beginning. Her marriage to Clay Beresford gives her the right to his estate after his death and that is exactly what she wants once Clay is gone. It is through an out of body experience that Clay discovers the clues to Dr. Harper's and Sam real intentions by "walking" through his past memories of both. Clay suddenly realizes that he has been played a fool and now he has lost not only his life but also who he thought was a good friend and a beloved wife.Lilith discovers the truth of Sam slowly but it is too late. Her only son is declared dead and it is then that Lilith makes a choice that a mother could only do. She takes her own life so that her own heart can be transplanted into Clay's body so that he may life. A choice she explains through the same out of body/memories experience (as well as the real reason why Clay's father died) to Clay. It is during these experiences that Dr. Harper and his team, including Sam, are discovered and are quickly arrested.Awake is one of those movies that won't stand out or even perhaps be remembered for too long. However, it is a movie that is clever in it's approach to a mystery and character development and that gives it enough of a reason to enjoy.7/10

"Awake" has gotten mostly terrible reviews, and where I can see where these reviewers are coming from, I think the average moviegoer will be entertained by this movie. It has it's many problems, but still worked pretty well for some reason.Clay Beresford (Hayden Christenson) is a rich businessman who has gained his fame after his fathers death and is following in his shoes. He has his fiancée/wife Sam (Jessica Alba), a seemingly sweet middle class girl. His mother does not know of their engagement, and certainly would and does not approve. Clay goes in for open heart surgery, but does not fall asleep when anesthetized, and can hear the doctors' fiendish plans to kill him, and more twists come along the way. SPOILERS START HERE!!!!!!!! SPOILERS START HERE!!!!!! SPOILERS START HERE!!!!!This was not an original story. There's a Tales from the Crypt episode with a very similar plot (though different results). I really disliked many parts of the film. This was a film set somewhat in reality, yet Hayden Christenson can leave his body and actually see what's going on in other rooms during his botched operation(?). Also, when his mother is put under, she seems to be able to telepathically talk to him, and considering this is set in reality, it's really stupid. The first 30 minutes before the surgery drag on, and only serve the purpose to introduce these flat characters. The ending lines spoken by Terrence Howard made me cringe, they were so poorly said. But along with all this bad, once the surgery starts the movie picks up and was sort of entertaining, if not "twist after twist" annoying format. My rating: ** out of ****. 80 mins. R for violence, language, drug use

A Nutshell Review: Awake

posted on 19 Jun 2009

I've never been under general anesthesia before, not that I want to, but I guess without first hand experience, one can only imagine what it would be like to be somewhat unconscious while your body's at the mercy of surgeons who are responsible in cutting you up and putting you back properly. I guess we've all heard of our fair share of horror stories with miscellaneous surgical tools being left inside our bodies, and one thing's for sure, I'll be pretty much scared shitless if I have to go anesthesia for a major body repair too.I usually have a general distrust of the doctors, especially those who have to peer, poke and prod within you, because one wrong move or diagnosis, and you're in for some pretty troubled lifestyle for a long time. If Awake reminds us of anything, that'll be to choose your doctors wisely. Even though they are your friends, should they have dubious abilities and worse, bad credentials, references and have lawsuits to settle arising from malpractice, take it as a sign to run away, fast. It's nothing personal, just professional, since it's your life at stake, not theirs. So don't be stubborn, and engage the best possible surgeon you can afford. And perhaps mothers know best too. Lena Olin stars as Lilith Beresford, the mother of billionaire scion Clay Beresford (Hayden Christensen). Being the overly protective and domineering single parent in his life, Clay finds it hard to connect with her, much lest trying to break the news that her employee Samantha (Jessica Alba) is the woman that he's been dating and going to marry. But of course, he's faced with a disease that requires a heart transplant, having the stars play games with him too for being of the rare O- blood type. When a donor becomes available and he's strapped to the operating table by Dr Jack Harper (Terrence Howard), here's where the titular condition kicks in, describing how a certain percentage of patients actually stay conscious throughout the whole process of surgery. I would really hate it to be in his shoes when your chest get opened up from scalpel to drill, or worse, having the skull opened to get to the brain. This movie earned its rating for blood curling in-your-face surgical sequence, but other than that, it runs in a pretty breezy fashion, clocking under 90 minutes to weave a tight medical thriller. I must say I came in with low expectations, and came out quite surprised at the twists put into the story, which is not really contrived and forced to make the whole thing work. The clues are there all the while for an attentive audience to pick up along the way, and when you do, you'll probably still smile when it gets delivered and confirms your suspicions.Awake is very bleak on its take on love however, what with in sickness and in health, for better or worse. It tells you to look carefully, beneath beautiful facades to try and peer into a person's character, which frankly can be hidden quite easiy until it is too late. Christensen didn't have much to do since the crucial scenes all involve his voice over narration in an out of conscious body experience, emphasizing his shock, disappointment and discovery of what's actually transpiring in conversation with the doctors. And it's definitely not something anyone wants to hear at all, and the sequence of being overcome by anesthesia, is worth the ticket price.

First of all, the big named actors must need the money... The surgical scenes were laughable.... and surely they must know that people who have a little knowledge of medicine would find this utterly absurd......Anesthesiologists do not leave the room during a heart transplant....nor do they do the surgery in a tiny room devoid of instruments, heart lung equipment and sterile techniques... just a joke... couldn't concentrate on the story line because of all the stupid surgery scenes... no blood, no personnel and then the hero doc coming in and taking over... it is not a film for thinking adults....Also the budget must have been limited... the street scenes were OK but who was the technical adviser....Seems like it was directed by a total idiot.. Save your money and wait until it comes out on DVD and Don't rent it..

Could you get five conspirators, four of which are highly skilled medical professionals to agree to kill someone for what would possibly be 20 or so million each? Of course not, loose lips sink ships and out of five people...Well, not very likely just based on that - let alone the impossibility of untraceable millions making the antagonists happy millionaires. That, in a nutshell, is the "hole" in the script and while it's plenty problematic this movie proves quite watchable as it moves fairly well and doesn't reveal too much too soon.Hayden Christensen is well cast as the sheltered highly moral and clean-cut heir to his late father's business empire. Lena Olin works in the role of overbearing, to the point of cruel, mother who is also quite lovable in the final analysis. Even ,surprisingly, Jessica Alba proves good as there is something that makes you feel she isn't as likable as her beauty is selling. Terrence Howard in his role was flat, I thought. Since that role was fairly crucial it couldn't help the movie much having the amiable Mr. Howard in the role of a chief antagonist. The key to this movie is to not buy into the first few minutes when it seems the movie will be as realistic as the facts presented. If one does that then you will see a nicely paced, well directed, and even somewhat macabre modern version of film noir. The premise is really promising and even if the script misses somewhat the movie proves to be entertaining.

i saw this movie the night it came out and it is absolutely amazing. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. I know that a comment on here says that it is not medically factual, who cares. Don't watch it to research a paper on the subject, but if you want to see a really interesting, and well-acted triller movie-----GO SEE AWAKE!!!!!!!!!!every actor did a fantastic job. Hayden Christensen's performance was flawless. the television commercials do not give anything away, you have to go and see this movie for yourselves. i don't want to give any big details about the plot away, just that you have no idea what's really going on in that hospital. its not all triller and killing, there are funny and heart-warming moments as well. i give AWAKE an A+ and i am going to pre-order my DVD!

A plastic imitation of a good thriller

This is a bit of a disappointment. It's got a heavy, slick gloss over the whole thing, with big name actors and a touching soundtrack and a happy ending and all, so what happened? This is all very calculated and fake, like a soap opera rather than a riveting drama. It is especially good towards the middle, but sort of falls apart at the end with a half baked conclusion. It is good enough to keep you interested, but this is not a very well written movie overall. The script is just terrible, for one, and the suspense is nonexistent because of this. Hayden Christiansen is not a terrible actor, but he is incompetent and definitely not fit for a role in a gripping hospital drama such as this, for that needs actual emotion.Awake is an underwhelming and substandard film without enough emotion or realism to keep this whole thing compelling. Only recommended if you're bored, really. NEXT!
