don't see it without drinking beer!

posted on 22 Aug 2009

As i read the other comments here, i may be the only German who finds this movie does his job quite well. If you follow the rule to *not* watch it without at least drinking two beer _before_ the movie starts, your experience may be not that great. I have to say i loved it. Of course the German speaking guys were no Germans (except _moeller, _brochno and the other muscle guy) at all, but that was the aspect that made me laugh the most. The display of German culture is sometimes that silly, that even the guys who play Germans in the movie wonder about it (as actors of course). I remember the "kuckucks clock" on the wall and one of the "germans" turns around going like: "what ze f**k is zat?". This movie is so funny that it even is making fun of itself! It just could be a little shorter. 1:50 is a little too long. However i recommend this as a must see! Get some beer(!), get some pals and don't think about watching it in anything else than it's original language. I don't know the German version but it can only be _not_ funny.

BEERFEST : Not A Classic... But Still A-Lot Of Harmful Fun

BEERFEST The latest from the idiots at Broken Lizzard tells the story of two American's named Jan & Todd who are given the task of scattering their grandfather's ashes at Octoberfest. However, when they arrive at the festival, they are introduced to an age old, underground tradition called "Beerfest". This underground festival is an Olympics for Beer in which the best drinkers from every country compete to prove their worth. However, when Jan and Todd arrive, an age-old family secret that includes a whore for a grandmother and the stealing of a coveted beer recipe is revealed to them.Of course, as would have to be the solution to any conflict in a movie entitled BEERFEST... the only way for Jan and Todd to regain family honor is to gather together the best drinkers in America and come back to win the festival next year. Luckily BEERFEST wastes very little time establishing a gripping plot and it dives right into the crude and uncensored comedy provided by grown man whose job for a year is to drink more and more beer.BEERFEST doesn't stand out as a classic when compared to similar comedies of it's kind. It also lacks a certain clever quality that was more apparent in Broken Lizzard's SUPER TROOPERS. Even so, there's always going to be something funny in a movie as shameless as this film.Often times it is easy to write off a comedy that only manages to muster laughs with burp jokes, abundant nudity, and politically incorrect humor as nothing but crude. But I can't deny the fact that BEERFEST was able to make me laugh consistently in spite of it's lack of intelligence. The performances are not really there to be criticized, b/c a characters integrity will always be sacrificed if a laugh is at stake. However, Broken Lizzard should count it's blessings to get such established actors as Cloris Leachman and Donald Sutherland (the most hysterical part of the film is his 5 minutes on screen) to spice things up.Overall, BEERFEST is a lot of fun. Maybe I shouldn't be laughing at this type of humor as easily as I did... but I did. It was a harmless movie that managed to cater to the college bing-drinker in all of us... at least in me. BEERFEST certainly isn't a classic to share with the kids, but it's an undoubtedly fun time at the movie theater.... B ...

Beerfest Serves It Up!

Broken Lizard does it again with another funny film. Is this film going to change the world? Absolutely not. But it is great brain candy! This film kept me laughing from start to finish. Beerfest also contains probably the best on screen belch since Revenge of the Nerds, albeit enhanced with effects. Methinks 'Bogar' will be replaced by 'Landfill' for best belch.Beerfest was just the right venue for the comedic styles of the Broken Lizard (B.L.) troupe. It featured great dialog, good slapstick, and just the right amount of 'potty' humor for the adult crowd. Beerfest shows off the great interplay of B.L., and their abilities to create quirky, weird, and hilarious characters. Beerfest is definitely comparable to Super Troopers, and I think much more hysterical than Club Dread.Again, Chandrasekhar does a great job in the director's seat and picking a great soundtrack.

Bring five beers and enjoy

I saw Beerfest earlier tonight. Unlike most commenters, I did not pregame. I brought ten beers, five for myself and five for my friend, and smuggled them into the movie. I drank when they drank on screen. Thirty minutes in, I was drunk and out of beer.Even though I was drunk, I could tell this movie was a great one. How, you say? Easy. It was about beer. That alone is enough to ensure that this movie will be loved by many. Not only is it about beer, but its funny! Two for two. If you liked Super Troopers (I did) and enjoyed Club Dread (I did) or not (many did not), you will like this movie. If you bring beer, you will LOVE this movie. On second thought, bring more than five beers. Or not. However many beers you bring, bring at least one. It's a great movie to drink to.

the worst film i've ever seen

posted on 11 Jul 2009

Friends have told me that "Freddie Got Fingered" was the worst film they'd ever seen, and when I noted that critics agreed it was terrible, I skipped it. Perhaps I shouldn't have. Then I'd at least have some kind of baseline to compare "Beerfest" to. "Beerfest," for me, is without question the worst film I've ever seen. No plot, over-the-top "comic" acting, crude sexual humor and sight gags, and -- the worst sin a comedy can commit -- decidedly unfunny. This film was offered, unadvertised, to an audience for free. The name of the film was not revealed until the lights went down. The thought that ran through my mind before the opening credits was, "What kind of movie doesn't demand the price of admission?" I found out. As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. After 45 minutes of torture I could stand it no longer and walked out. I've never done that before, and now I know what it feels like to be subjected to a movie so awful that walking out is the only option for one's sanity. Thank God I didn't put forth even a penny for seeing this movie. If you're a grown-up, do yourself a HUGE favor and skip this film. It's directed at an adolescent mentality that even some teenagers may find abhorrent. My rating: 1 (out of 10). My regret with the IMDb rating system in this particular case is that I cannot do as Roger Ebert occasionally does, which is to assign a truly terrible film a "No Stars" rating. That is exactly was "Beerfest" deserves -- not a 1, but a zero.ADDITIONAL NOTE, POSTED HERE ONE WEEK LATER : I wrote this before the film's official release, which is to say, before the major critics had had a chance to see the movie and write their opinions. Those reviews are now available (check the IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, etc.), and I'm not surprised that they find it an abomination.

Please drink responsible? Get real!

Oktoberfest is known for its beer and meats, but there's is something way more extreme than that: "Beerfest". However it's an underground competition which extreme beer fans go. Two brothers go to Germany to attend a festival, which they encountered "Beerfest". They also encounter the biggest problem there is, the country's finest drinkers. In order to defeat them, they had to gather the best from their time. When all were gathered, they get ready for the main event. With a little help from Great Gam Gam(Cloris Leachman), they are good to go. Unknown to the team Gam Gam's caretaker Cherry(Mo'Nique) is a spy and traitor, and she kills Landfill(Kevin Hefferman). The twin steps in and helps the team rebuilds the spirit. Not only do they fight for the USA, they fight for Landfill and Gam Gam's honor as well. When the get the company from the baron, they get to enjoy the night on the town, only to me country singer Willie Nelson in Denmark. Who else will they meet? A movie you get get drunk on, and it's perfect for the whole party. So drink up! BURP! Excuse me! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2.5 OUT OF 5 STARS!

A comedy about beer, without the comedy.

This is one of the unfunniest films I have ever seen, I'm just glad it was "orange Wednesday" and I only payed half price. The story(I use the term loosely)was plodding, predictable and uneventful. The national stereotypes offensive and just not funny. This film could make USA even less popular with the countries it slurs. Everyone makes mistakes, it's part of learning, I just wish the makers would have had the good grace to spare the world this kind of thoughtless racist tripe. It took dumbing down to a new level...Way to go. A little research would not have gone amiss either, for example, the Union Jack is not the flag of England, it is the Cross of St George. In conclusion, one to avoid.

Simply not funny...

Only time watching this was on a long bus ride. Never again... Our group got half way through it when we started to riot about how bad and stupid the movie was when we finally put in "Tommy Boy" to ease the pain of Beerfest. The only 'slightly' amusing part of this whole movie was the opening scene. That was it. The rest was stupid and crude that might appeal to the ages 16-20 crowd. Whats the point if they can't even drink? All this movie was about was drinking...You could just be short and simple and call it Stupid. Beerfest has nothing to offer at all. If you must, watch the first scene and turn it off. There are so many movies that are much better than this, if you have half a mind you won't waste your time on this garbage.

Better Than Expected, Though No Masterpiece

Two brothers must travel to Germany with their grandfather's ashes. In Germany, they discover a secret competition -- Beerfest -- and vow to win in the following year to restore honor to their grandfather, who was accused of stealing the world's greatest beer recipe. This film is written by and stars the Broken Lizard team, the guys who brought you "Super Troopers" and "Club Dead". As such, I feel obligated to compare the three films. "Super Troopers" is the best of the three, by far. "Club Dead" is by far the worst (I don't know if anyone I know likes that film). Which leaves "Beerfest" in the middle. The film is funny in places, but in others is just really stupid or poorly scripted. And the plot is too thin to really add up to much (it's 2 hours of people drinking beer). Some good parts include the German insults and a scene where we find the team waking up in strange places after a night of hard drinking. But then there's the bad. One scene is really long, showing what happens when you take a woman home from the bar drunk. The joke is obvious and could have been summed up in 30 seconds rather than the ten minutes I was subjected to.The characters are decent, especially "Landfill" (played by the the guy who played Farva in "Super Troopers") and "Fink" (although the frog masturbation was probably more juvenile than was really necessary). I appreciated some of the more subtle Jewish humor revolving around Fink, since most of the jokes were very blunt and sophomoric. As far as comedies go, better ones exist. 2006 gave us "Borat" and "Talladega Nights". By comparison, "Beerfest" is just the Red Dog of annual comedies.

disappointed, thought previous Broken Lizard movies were...

much better. I thought the previous Broken Lizard movie, Club Dread, was a decent comedy. It was much funnier than this movie. A movie centering around beer just didn't seem that entertaining to me. It does have some gross out humor that was good. A lot of it concerned the grandma and her handling a sausage or any advice she gave.MoNique also offers some laughs in this, mainly when she seduces a drunk Barry and he sees her as a very hot chick. The scene with the nerd and frog was just plain gross.FINAL VERDICT: OK, but not as funny as other films. It is raunchy but nothing like the American pie movies which are much better.

About as funny warm keg of Coors light in the summer sun for weeks.

I must say this movie was excruciating to sit through. I went with four friends who all have a varied sense of humor. There were about 200 audience members in the theater. I had my hopes up: I'm an avid fan of beer, I've brewed my own, bought my own ingredients and tasted as many varieties as I could, both good and bad. As we all know Germans are famous for their outstanding beer and their Oktober festival. This was the perfect film right?I'm afraid not. The movie lacked all that I expected. I was looking forward to an absurd romp through Germany during its drunkest hour filled with twists and turns and plenty of fun. Brilliant plan, but the whole drinking in Germany part of the movie took place in a fictitious underground club that resembled an organized fraternity party based on thoughtless drinking games more than anything else. The Germans, who were the bad guys, were made to be trite Nazi-like beer game champions, and in terms of character boring. Even the talent of Jürgen Prochnow couldn't save this film. He had no script to work with just like in House of the Dead. The American characters, our protagonists, were right at home in this juvenile club of college drinking games. The broken lizard team's acting performances were mediocre and simple minded. The plot revolved around becoming better at drinking games, not exploring Oktoberfest. Now I wasn't looking for a documentary on the German festival, but it certainly contains more comedic material to work with as opposed to a frat party with drinking games. I doubt broken lizard has ever been to an Oktoberfest. A wild party celebrated by an entire country for nearly a month, that spills out onto the streets, drinking itself into oblivion would have been the obvious source for comedy; compared to a dark and dank underground club hosting frat boy drinking games. The material is already there, unfortunately, for broken lizard, they missed it right over their heads. Point being, it was not funny. I didn't hear a single hearty laugh throughout the audience. The jokes were childish and often fell short at the punchline. The delivery was awful. The characters weren't interesting and the general structure was full of holes. There are no subtle comedic undertones in charter or plot. One character gets killed only to be replaced by an identical character, played by the same actor. The only difference is that the replacement wears a cowboy hat. Who writes this stuff!? Oh yeah, broken lizard... It was in your face, mindless humor. Forget about cinematography or editing or sound design, nothing interesting there. Now I went to college for film, and at times it's hard for me to detach myself from all that I've learned about making a worthwhile film. I can say however, I don't expect everything that I see to be an award winning, beautifully directed and scripted masterpiece. I'm often much like the next guy who enjoys a couple of beers and watching an absurd comedy with hardly any lasting virtue. There are great comedies out there, and this isn't one of them.I'm afraid that the studios hype these types of movies for revenue purposes only. And plenty of unknowing movie goers see movies like these and laugh at them. broken lizard and similar production companies are dumbing down American audiences, and this movie is proof. It's the classic "cookie cutter" example of not straying from the money making formula and instead focusing on revenue not film. It's happening in all genres of new releases and they're coming out a dime a dozen. This just happens to be one of the worst examples I've seen yet. Aside from my own knowledge of film, I went to the theater with a bricklayer, an auto-mechanic, and a welder, each a friend of mine... When we left, all four of us agreed. That sucked!

Broken Lizard Does it Again!

Forget Will Farrell. He's an amateur. His unscripted brand of forced, improvisational goofiness only works when he has a good script and ensemble cast to back him up (Anchorman, a rare gem in his repetoir). The Broken Lizard comedy team picks up where all other comedians of the past two decades have failed. While movies like American Pie offer watered down, PC gags for the masses, Broken Lizard provides solid laughs only the great comedies of the seventies and eighties delivered. Lizard's brand of bawdy humor, hilarious pop culture and sexual references combined with the right amount of gratuitous nudity and bodily functions is reminiscent of the great comic genius of Mel Brooks and the writing team of Abrahams & Zucker.Beerfest is the latest Broken Lizard film behind Super Troopers and Club Dread. The critics ripped Club Dread as a failure, but as a horror fan I found entertainment in the on-screen antics of it's cast and am appreciative of their comic take on the slasher genre. They cover all the proverbial bases and clichés, delivering a lot of laughs along the way. Super Troopers is an essential for any comic collection, and Beerfest runs a close second. I dare say Super Troopers and Beerfest are by far the best comedies of their generation.Beerfest is the Animal House of this decade. An homage to beer and every beer drinking game ever invented, Broken Lizard's chug-a-licious romp through the fictional, secret society behind Oktoberfest reaches Fight Club proportion as their US team faces off against the Germans to regain their heritage to the Wolfhausen Brewery throne. Guest appearances by Chloris Leachman, Mo'Nique and Jurgen Prochnow lend hilarity to the Broken Lizard team--especially Prochnow, Das Boot references in tow! I highly recommend buying the DVD. Extras include a comic lesson on the history of beer, and you'll enjoy the commentary behind the film. I'll put the genius of Broken Lizard up against any of their peers working today in comedy today. They literally blow away the competition on any playing field!

Harmless Fun

This was a very funny film but it could of been so much better without all the 'yey, go America' clichés which are in so many films it starts to get tiresome! That's what really let it down for me, but that's probably just a personal opinion and not the fault of the film or the writers. However there are enough innuendo loaded jokes, and cringe-worthy scenes with a granny and a bratwurst which will stay with you. There's also plenty of nudity shots for the chaps to make it definitely worth seeing. It does make you want to find a glass boot to have a go with..

Lovable silliness

From the first few minutes on "Beerfest" heads straight into debauchery without making any excuses for it. However, this movie is closer to classic National Lampoon movies such as "Animal House" or "European Vacation" than to the vulgar sex-comedies that have been so popular ever since "American Pie". Make no mistake, "Beerfest" is full of nudity, dick jokes and all kinds of deliberate lowbrow humor. The difference to aforementioned sex-comedies is that "Beerfest"'s stupidity is much more self-aware and also aimed at an audience that understands this and can laugh about it from one step away. Or to make it sound less pretentious: this comedy has a lot of heart. When Germans are merely primitive giants in this movie it's clear that this is a comedic stereotype that must not be taken seriously by any means. The Germans and the depiction of German traditions is really the highlight of this movie.Like Broken Lizard's previous theatrical adventure "State Troopers" this one is mindless, silly fun with a great cast, but all in all "Beerfest" is the better movie. Not a classic, but very enjoyable.

Not worth seeing

This movie is poorly written and lacks good comic timing. There are numerous scenes in this film that might have been funny if someone had come up with better lines for the characters to use. Other scenes had the right dialogue, but somehow the actors delivered the lines in such a way that the punchline just fell flat.It is said that there is a fine line between comedy and tragedy and all too often things that might have been funny came off as painful-looking and simply disturbing. One knows going into a movie like this what to expect. I wasn't expecting highbrow "witty" banter, but I was hoping that there would be a good punchline or two in the film. Unfortunately this film didn't contain one memorable line.

"Beerfest" instant comedy classic along with its twin brother "Super Troopers".

When I was sitting at home watching TV one day, I along with every other "Super Troopers" fan, had his heartbeat jump twice as fast when seeing Thorny and Mack in a preview for a new movie. Broken Lizard is yet to fail me (with the exception of Puddle Cruiser, but they were young, its OK). However, with this concept for "Beerfest", it would be a surefire winner. That's exactly what it was. My friend who works at the movie theater got me into the Thursday night, midnight showing. It was absolutely amazing. It was clearly a Broken Lizard type comedy. I am so pleased with the way that it turned out, and it's humor is right up the "Super Troopers" ally. "Club Dread" was a great movie, putting a spin on all those horror movies has only been done (poorly) in the "Scary Movie" series. However it didn't feel the same as "Super Troopers". "Beerfest" is the first movie I have ever seen that comes close to that style of comedy. With EVERYONE in the Broken Lizard cast returning, and tributes to "Super Troopers" hidden throughout the film, it is definitely something I would recommend. It will make you want to jump out of your chair and chug a beer with your friends. I suggest having a drink with you in the theater or you will have to go out and get one, and you don't want to miss a second of this. Nice job Broken Lizard, you've done it again.-Joel R.

There's only one word for this terrible 'comedy': AWFUL! From the word go I knew this was going to be one painful viewing! No character development who-so-ever, it seemed to me the writer of this film just focused on the lame, flat story line rather than the characters in it, not as if that would of made it any better! I hardly ever laughed at all through the whole film, and those infrequent times I did laugh was at how bad the film was! I had high expectations for this BEERFEST, but unfortunately failed to deliver! If you want a funny comedy, then rent out: WEDDING CRASHERS. Not this pile of rubbish! Overall, I thought BEERFEST was one of the worst comedies I have ever seen, far fetched, stupid, and just pointless. I strongly suggest DO NOT rent/buy this film... Because you'll be disappointed! 1/10- Painfully awful...

Beerfest is very similar to other films done by Jay Chandrasekhar. Its an adult comedy thats keeps you laughing throughout a large part of the film. The basics behind a movie is that two brothers decide to travel to Germany for Oktoberfest. On arrival they discover a secret competition that takes place called Beerfest. They return home to assemble a team that will compete in Beerfest to participate to defend the rights to the ownership of their grandfathers brewery. This film has a cast of humorous characters, including Jay Chandrasekhar, Paul Soter, Erik Stolhanske, and Kevin Heffernan. When watching the movie I didn't notice any goofs, but from what I have read, often time the level of beer in mugs changes with different camera angles. Overall a good movie that finds ways to make you laugh.

Another front runner for the worst movie of 2006.

Just got back from a late night showing. This is a great nonsensical drinking movie. More beer than you can imagine is guzzled, the good old BL feeling is back, parts make you physically ill and crying with laughter at the same time...overall totally worth paying the evening weekend price. My only issues with the thing is one really unnecessary plot 'twist' that you could only see happening in the most remote chances of hell. You'll see. And also, the overdone accents of the Germans and English were a little much at times - you could barely understand them most of the time, even if you're a lip reader. But Chandrasekar's performance just barely beats the rest of the guys, perfectly balancing the playing-it-straight with a dose of overdoing-it... its worth seeing for itself, forget the rest of the film. Soter and Stolhanske are believable as brothers (b/c they obviously know each other so well), Lemme and Heffernan are doing their thing and having a blast with it. Jay just made the movie great for me.Much as I adore Super Troopers, this actually outranks ST now. But remember, don't see this expecting much more than fun and entertainment, and please don't come back whining and whinging about how stupid it is, how you knew what was going to happen, etc., etc. It's meant to be dumb, that's a big part of why it's so much fun.Turn your brain off or kill it with a beer and enjoy!
