Heartrending portrayal of the difference between apathy and action; accompanied by a love story that spans three continents.
posted on 21 Jul 2009I had hoped when I first saw the Film in theatres that it would shake Americans out of their provincial apathy. However, it has taken 5 years for Hollywood to sit up and take notice. It is gratifying to see some movie stars using their position and wealth to adopt children from war torn or starving nations. Naturally, Ms. Jolie leads the way with her efforts. She is a role model for people everywhere and her actions should be applauded. As an American who has traveled to some of the poorest nations including Afghanistan, South Africa, the villages of Iran, the former Soviet Union; I have seen first hand the courage and the appreciation for life that citizens of these countries display.
eh...it's okay
posted on 11 Jul 2009The movie was mediocre...always willing to give a Clive Owen flick a twirl, though. I have no pretentious words about the plights of others and the impact of the movie. It didn't shatter my 'american illusions'. Wish it was all a little less sanctimonious. It doesn't appeal to the average person, but instead focuses on two cultural class extremes. Angelina is in good form. She looks lovely and is appropriately dramatic throughout. At times seemed very James Bond meets pseudo-do-gooder princess. The message is good, the delivery is so-so. Wouldn't pay money to see it, but overall an o.k. movie to watch on t.v.
Thought Provoking!
posted on 09 Jul 2009This film is about a woman who was touched by a heart wrenching plea to help the people in need, and her journey she embarked on to make world a better place.First of all, I want to thank the filmmakers for making this film. It unveils the parts of the world that most people have no idea about. Famine, warlords, corruption, civil war are just few things that millions of people have to endure in the world today, and yet most of us in the luxury of peace and civilisation decided to turn a blind eye. Angelina Jolie is one of the very few stars who really does something to help the people in need. She did not just donate money or appear in press conferences to appeal for help, which are one off things, but she actually adopted two children and dedicates her rest of her life to helping others in need. How many other stars have done that much before? No other actress could play Angelina Jolie's role a convincingly as she can. She was as if putting her real life on her screen. However, there is one minor flaw. Angelina Jolie is too perfect for this role, just like Nicole Kidman was not a convincing maid in Cold Mountain. The plot was realistic and exposed what really goes on in some parts of the world. However, I found the romance between Jolie and Owen unrealistic, unconvincing and poorly built up. I could see how Jolie could respect and admire Owen for the work he had done, but respect and love is not the same thing. I would have liked the whole romance subplot to be cut out. I think if Jolie saved Owen because of her dedication to humanitarian issues and on moral grounds, this film would have been much more moving.
A very disappointing mess. A waste of talent.
posted on 27 Jun 2009I would have to say that I was terribly disappointed by this movie. The storyline offered nothing and the acting was O.K. but not upto the actors usual standards. All in all I was very VERY disappointed by this film. Not worth 2 hours of your time. Avoid.
Distasteful settings for cliché romance.
posted on 25 Jun 2009You might find this a good movie if you don't get a bad taste in your mouth watching a rather typical old fashioned love story in exotic settings, being played out among relief workers having real life tragedy all around them. If this movie pretends to really care for the unfortunate background characters, that really seems to be there to make our protagonists look heroic, it even does so in a very bad way. At no point are these people introduced to us as other than set pieces, colorful background. They are there to make you forget, that the Jolie character actually seems like an extremely selfish woman. She leaves her husband and later one, then again later two children, to run round the world seeking for true love (not that she cares much for the dying around her either, she's there for her man). And my argument for the romance being cliché? Well have the man first detest the woman (but hey, they are the stars, so we know where they'll end up) and her fighting for his respect (the only time Jolie seems to care for other people is till she gets his attention - again even the character use these unfortunate like props). Then changes of location, one more exotic and strange than the other (By the way, how does Africa look like, is that not something like earth tone color? And Tjetjenia is rather blue and it snows of course and you hear gun fighting every single second. We know the Jungle from Apocalypse Now, so we'll remake that). All in all boring, but worse distasteful. Only reason for this entry is that i read that Jolie is actually an ambassador for UN and these cases and wonder however she could agree to do this? The film does show some aspects of corruption and politics standing in the way of real aid, and that may be new to many? But far more interesting movies could be made on that subject, we don't need a love story as sugarcoating.
One of the best casted movies that I have ever seen.
posted on 03 Jun 2009My sister had tried to get me to watch this movie several times, so finally, I relented. Am I ever glad that I did. Not to mention a great story line, the acting is incredible, and the casting is wonderful. Being a movie fan, I knew, however, that one of the main characters were more than likely going to die. I kept thinking it would be Nick (Clive Owen) who died, but when Sarah (Angelina Jolie) stepped on the land mine, I thought, "Oh, no". I had to actually stop the movie several times, so that I could calm down. When the soldier gave the baby the hand grenade, I had to stop the movie once again, just to cry, then I resumed. It is truly one of the most heart wrenching movies that I have ever seen. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to see an excellent movie.
Beyond Boring
posted on 28 May 2009I saw a sneak preview of this movie for free, and I'm very glad I did not have to pay to see it. It is cliche and boring. The love story is completely unbelievable as the two main characters only interact in a handful of scenes, and most of the time it is the guy really p**sing off Angelina Jolie, or trying to get her killed. The movie has no point, and the ending is a downer. This movie gets a 0/10 from me. With no value whatsoever I am sure it will be forgotten before it even leaves the theaters. If you want to see a movie about human suffering that is much better done, rent The Killing Fields.
Not a Travelogue or Road Trip
posted on 12 May 2009That evil and greed exist could not be made more apparent in this film. True evil, the Talibans and the Khmer Rouges of the world, will take their turns in power grabs. Know your enemy. That is how you defeat him. But after this movie, you think: not in this lifetime, as you sit snuggly in your theater seat.We are in the lap of luxury, and 'Beyond Borders' gives a teleoscopic view into the world of the have-nots. If they could look back at us in those comfortable seats, they may hate us, although it seems to be religious fanatics who are doing that at present rather than jealousy for the abundance we have. Still our blest circumstances are nothing to wave infront of the rest of the worlds' faces. Here is how millions in the world live.Jolie gives a better and more daring performance than Laura Croft, but her huge lips are still distracting. Clive Owen gave an excellent performance. Owen, who was trained at Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (and it shows), I first saw in 'Croupier' ('98), and enjoyed him in 'Gosford Park.' But 'Borders' is the best movie to suit him so far because he himself considers the dangerous characters far more interesting to play - in this case a doctor who has to 'deal' to get supplies to his relief camps, relief camp being an oxymoron. If these were not real starving people in real wretched conditions, then hats off to make-up and set production. Whichever. It is likely to quell any starry eyed volunteers or do-gooders. As an ER doc is a particular brand of doctor, so must be these tough-as-nails relief workers who have a stomach and heart mutated for strength and sadness to roll off their backs like water off a duck. The subject matter will not produce a blockbuster. It is too depressing. But thanks to those brave enough to spend their millions to make the film anyway in order to focus the spotlight on the conditions that exist beyond the comfort of home.
Great, Great Movie
posted on 08 May 2009Wow! I only just saw this movie, and I was very impresses. Angelina Jolie and Clive Owen are just so great together and the story has emotion, grit and a few well placed surprises. I thought Angelina Jolie's character Sara was extremely well played and Clive Owen is just brilliant. This Movie will get your emotions worked up, at least it did to mine. It's a great story with a wonderful message. The places they visit, the people they meet, and the things these people go through to help others is a complete inspiration. The way the people(all the people)who were involved in the film connect with the audience is pure genius. I highly recommend that everyone see this terrific movie.
Touching subject even despite film flaws
posted on 22 Apr 2009Yes there are flaws in this film as in most films, eg some stereotyping of characters, however there have been few films that have touched the difficult and emotional subject of displaced persons, refugee camps and the trauma of ongoing internal strife. I think the right response is that we as viewers should be moved by such a film and a healthy response would be to try to play a part to make this a better world, especially those of those in the West where we live comfortably and in a war-free environment. How can we justify not helping in some capacity?I personally didn't rate highly Angelina's acting but then it wasn't a part that asked for a lot, and the fact that she is a UN Ambassador in real life means that she brings authenticity to the role. In contrast I like watching Clive Owen. He's an interesting actor. (If you liked him, you may like to watch another of his films, Croupier.) I didn't find his role despicable. So he sold a part of his soul to get supplies through but at least his heart was in the right place. It's all very well finding fault in his manner, albeit correct, but it's easy for us to speak from a distance and not from the coalface, so to speak. I've read enough about relief work to know that conditions can be very dicey and treacherous at times. As for the romance, even if it might seem unlikely in the normal course of events, when you are in very uncertain circumstances, with life & death all around you, that's exactly when the unusual or unexpected can happen! And as for the ending, it was more realistic that it not be a happy ending. It seemed fitting to me, but it's funny how we actually want a happy ending! So both Jolie and her husband lived a lie of a marriage-that happens a lot in reality! Whether it's right is another matter.Worth watching if for nothing else to make people think a bit and take them out of their comfort zones.
Good, not Great
posted on 10 Apr 2009I agree that the film has some rough spots and that more could have been done to show the effort and effect of Doctors without Borders. I also agree that there were gaps in the love story-- BUT, I think most of the reviewers didn't give it a chance, panned it because it was Jolie, and didn't bother to listen to the message of the film. Clive Owen is a favorite of mine- I think he brought all he could to the film- which did have some flatly drawn characters. There may have been too much "language" at times, but those of us that work in the real world of medicine know that we're not PC at every minute.
beyond garbage
posted on 19 Mar 2009This movie is one of the worst movies I've seen in theaters this year- and I've seen Underworld (Okay, Underworld was worse). The cinematography and score were average at best and the acting wasn't going beyond borders either. I went to see this hoping to: a) catch a good film that would give intelligent commentary on social issues while showing off the beauty that is our global culture or b) have a nice long make out session. Instead, all I got was a crappy film and a cramp in my arm. Boo to this movie. The scenery was indeed beautiful though- it's a shame nobody mentioned that to the DP.
See it for Jolie
posted on 17 Mar 2009Angelina Jolie's participation in this film is what makes it watchable; if not for her deeply committed performance, Beyond Borders would have been heavy-handed claptrap of the worst kind - a star-crossed/tragic romance masquerading as social commentary. But her presence is so riveting, her characterization so thoroughly controlled and believable, that you find yourself buying into the proceedings against your better judgment. The heavy-handedness starts out early in the film, when Owen's character blazes into a private upperclass event with his ace in the hole, his emaciated Ethiopian boy JoJo, who is made into a mockery by both the crowd AND Owen, unbelievably enough. This scene did not bode well, of course, but then Jolie takes over, and dammit, you're sucked in. The ending is predictably tragic, but sad nonetheless because you did feel for her character.
Awful
posted on 11 Mar 2009This movie is so bad it's almost funny. The characters and plot were never fully developed, which left me wondering what, exactly, the movie was supposed to be about. If it truly was supposed to be a love story, it has to go down as one of the worst love stories ever written. Angelina Jolie's acting was so bad it was almost hilarious at times. Try to keep your composure after about the 10th shot of her staring at him with that sad, pouty face and lips that look like they're about to explode collagen everywhere. You can only fault her to a certain degree, however. Whoever wrote this thing gave her very little to work with. The dialogue was trite, cliche, just downright awful. The dialogue and story line was so predictable that my wife and I started saying the lines even before the characters said them. That's how bad this movie is. I do think the positive side of this movie is that it can be held up in any decent film school as an example of "How to NOT Make a Movie."
A different role for Jolie compared to Lara Croft
posted on 11 Feb 2009Another wifey Africa movie, and unfortunately, pretty much along the same lines The movie focuses on Sarah (Jolie), a British woman who becomes aware of the dire situation in Ethiopia after an aid worker Nick (Owen), storms a charity event. Sarah feels compelled to go and assist the work, and is horrified over the desperation of the situation. She also struggles to understand Nick's way of working and his overwhelming abrasiveness. After a short trip Sarah returns to the UK and continues her work by joining the UN. Several more trips to other countries follow, resulting in more horror and heartbreak.Challenging at times, but unfortunately there's nothing new in this movie we haven't seen in the genre. If you are passionate about the plight of the Africans, hire "Hotel Rwanda", a true story backed up by an excellent script and cast.
One of the best movies I've seen in years
posted on 16 Jan 2009I can't believe the major city who are panning this remarkable movie. Angelina Jolie has elevated her screen personae tenfold with this sensitive portrayal. It's a landmark role for her and a brilliant movie, overall. The sweeping cinematography and important story are reminders of why we go to the movies. Every performance is Oscar-caliber. I haven't been so impressed by a production, a script, a storyline and casting in years. This is a keeper! See it now.
could have been much better
posted on 09 Dec 2008When you hear about it , it sounds great. You think it's something worthwhile. It's not a thousand-time-repeated love story or a just-be-entertained gun show at least but unfortunately it's not so. The movie is very badly made. What you watch is not at all what neither you nor the title deserves. actors are disappointing and the script is nothing near good. you have to force yourself to continue watching. They actually failed to develop such a great subject into a beautiful memorable movie. I think even relief workers deserved more 'cause watching this you're not going to love their character. However I enjoyed watching it as a movie about reality. The reality that needs to be shown, repeated and brought into attention.
Great film
posted on 29 Nov 2008This is a really good film and its sad to see so many bad reviews about it. Its not hollywood action or romance cinema but much better. There is no single serious issue with this film but be warned its pacing is sometimes a bit slow and it deals with some of the saddest matters on this planet so dont watch this if u are already in bad mood!
Possibly...no, IS so far the worst film of 2003
posted on 25 Nov 2008I'm sorry folks, but there's no defending this movie. Blame it on the poor writing and frankly shame on the makers of this movie for using the plight of starving and terrorised peoples around the world as a backdrop for a romance movie that is in the end totally pointless, unbelievable, and infuriatingly stupid. This played like a version of "Same Time Next Year" except the meetings happened every few years with the backdrop going from a really bad Ethiopia to a really, really bad Cambodia to an even worse Chechnya. Which the point of it all was to allow the two leads to hook up for a few days over the span of years to develop and explore their relationship amidst and despite of the harrowing poverty, starvation, sickness, violence, and mayhem surrounding them. The worst insult is the "dedication" blurb at the end where we're lead to believe this whole romantic tripe is to honor the hard-working relief workers around the world. Give me a break.

A movie with a strong political message
posted on 31 Jul 2009Starring Angelina Jolie, Clive Owen - Beyond Borders is a very sentimental and political movie.A sheltered American woman (Angelica Jolie) living in London is deeply impressed by a doctor (Clive Owen) and his humanitarian efforts in war-torn countries. Driven by her new-found enthusiasm while working in the United Nations (UNHCR), she embarks on a dangerous journey to the far corners of the world. This movie is recommended to those who wonder how bad things are in others part of the world. This movie is not recommended for those who have weak stomach. Strong images from people dying of starvation.
