Rob stayed closer to the mainstream here... thankfully.

I must admit that I'm not the biggest Rob Schneider movie fan. I do find humor in his films but also find they often go way too over the top for MY tastes, and that far too often, the humor goes from funny to ridiculous.Big Stan doesn't take as many risks or go to the extremes of his previous works. I think that is why, personally, I enjoyed this one more than any other films from Schneider. I'm sure there will be a contingent of Schneider fans that loved his previous films and enjoyed his 'no holds barred' approach in that past, but I for one, enjoyed this 'safer' entry.Big Stan is basically a comedy, revenge theme centering on one man's commitment to NOt getting raped in prison. There are no 'roll on the floor' moments but the film isn't totally void of its' comedic moments and most will enjoy Rob beating the crap out of everyone. I did. I also enjoyed some of the prison themes that Rob toyed with and spun into light hearted, somewhat meaningful moments.55/100 - an average comedy that might be worth a rental.

Pretty entertaining Rob Schneider flick

If you don't like any of his previous movies, big chance is that you won't like this one. If you do enjoyed his movies than this one will be even more enjoyable. It seems that Rob Schneider has matured. He tackles serious subjects (prison system) in a fun way. Some of the jokes have been done to death and can be tiresome. But because of Schneider's performance they still are acceptable. Of course you don't have to expect this movie to have any social or political impact. I just want to mention that it is big step up for Schneider in comparison to "The Animal" or "Deuce Bigalow". David Carradine clearly has gotten very old but still can deliver. Especially in this movie. Since he is parodying himself. He is making fun of the character he played in "Kung Fu" but at the same time embracing and honouring the role that brought him fame. Worth watching!

You Gotta Love This Guy!

I love Rob Schneider. He is hilarious, he is pretty cool and he has heart, his movies I mean, and this is one of them. But physically he has also tuned up his muscles to play an unlikely role. It may not be his best but it's his directorial debut and it's something different from his previous movies. This time he has gone kung fu, actually so has the rest of the world of late.Stanley (Rob Schneider) is imprisoned for fraud but is given six months of delay before his incarceration begins. During this period, out of fear of being raped in prison, he finds ways to help prepare himself to avoid the harrowing and torturous experience by making himself unrapeable.Taking lessons from Master Cho (Simon Rhee, famed for his role in Best of the Best) Stan gets a good thrashing and kicked out when he wanted to handle more than he was able to. And then, out of the darkness, like some martial arts cliché , another master known as The Master (David Carradine of Kung Fu series fame) appears.Like many of his other films, there is a heart warming and sweet message that makes the entire movie a wonderful journey. Schneider is rather good in showing off his kung fu skills in the fight scenes, quite a remarkable feat for a man known for his comedic roles. His mom, Pilar, also has a cameo appearance like she does in some of his other movies. If you love Rob Schneider you'll love this. How can anyone not love a guy who was an animal, a gigolo, a teenage girl and an inmate who lived to tell about it?

A pretty decent comedy

I find the general lack of interest towards this comedy rather disturbing. This message coming all the way from Europe, Bulgaria. The movie is playing in theaters as of this week, and to be honest it is just as hilarious and similarly spirited to other Schneider flicks. I went to see this expecting a few good laughs and that's what you get. The funny moments generally arise from comical situations and actions which lead to a rather expected outcome each time. It is not a sophisticated film, it has no real depth, it is just a feel good, unrealistic comedy, which makes you all warm inside. I apologize for the chaotic and short review, it's just that I find it hard to organize my thoughts in order give this film an adequate presentation. 7 out of 10, doesn't stray too far from all the other Schneider movies, if you've loved his previous work, you'll also enjoy seeing this.

Surprisingly Funny

Big Stan wasn't really advertised at all and it just sort of came out into the video stores like it was a terrible movie. I thought that at first, but when I actually watched it I felt that it was surprisingly a funny movie. After seeing other prison comedies like Let's Go To Prison, The Longest Yard, etc. I thought that this would probably not even be as funny as those, but it really was a pretty good movie. Rob Schneider normally works in the most terrible movies of all time, but even though this didn't make it to theaters, it still was enjoyable and worth watching at least one time.8/10

Embarrassing vanity project, tiny tune Schneider!

OK, so for a quite long time little Rob had a good thing going, comic-streak-wise. Admittedly, he was the stereotypical nerd - weakling with a good heart, but still, the Animal, or the Deuce Bigalow series, the Hot Chick , and quite many more were quite funny. I even remember a one season TV series he starred in and which was quite funny at the beginning of the 90's. He probably got tired of being stopped by all the kids at the Mall to do the pee in his pants scene from the Animal, because in this one, Rob truly goes berserk on a rampant compensation trip, ludicrously presenting himself as a fighting machine, capable of fighting any giant, and all this without a magic potion. The little booger goes Stallone on us, and this in the worst moment, at forty plus. There is absolutely no more comic undertone once our small aging hero becomes one with the spoon, and the whole enchilada plunges into ridicule while tiny fights all inmates often hugely outnumbered. Ridiculous. Hey, got a great idea for your next joke of a project: get Verne Troyer to play the villain and you can be the huge and mighty Hulk. Or even better, get some kids to play an army of terrorists, and you be the giant in Boogertown. Yawn...

I was pleasantly Surprised!! A+++

This one was actually one very funny movie indeed....The fact that Bob actually KNOWS KUNGFU helped the believability a whole lot! A lot of sexual talk and innuendo without nudity? Yes, apart from Bob's own naked butt, which I personally didn't find offensive :D....Story is not the most original, but who cares when it is executed without flaw, the acting, sets and people are actually believable...NOT TO BE MISSED!I would see it again and would probably laugh my ass off just as much. As a matter of fact, I think I am actually going to watch it again tonight.

Brilliant Easy-Going Comedy

posted on 20 Apr 2009

I definitely didn't expect this to be a good comedy...I though this might be like all the other unoriginal, cheap and just plain stupid movies that seem to flood our screens these days. But Big Stan definitely has some classic moments and most of the jokes are timeless...Rob Schneider fans will not be disappointed. The plot is easy going and is not for people who demand sensible twists or credible everyday situations. If I had to describe this movie I would Say it is like the movie 'Felon' being turned into a light 'Scary Movie' version. Having said this 'Big Stan' is not for everyone. It is more aimed at the younger audience or the fans of Rob Scheinder/Adam Sandler .(I am surprised Adam does not appear in this comedy)If you just want to laugh this movie is for you!! 8/10

Hilarious Entertainment

The fraudulent real state agent Stan (Rob Schneider) is married with his beloved Mindy (Jennifer Morrison) and has a seven million dollar fortune. When he is arrested for fraud, he is sentenced to three years in prison and his assets are frozen by the justice. However, his crooked lawyer Lew Popper (M. Emmet Walsh) negotiates a six month freedom, and the weak Stan, who is afraid of being raped in prison, hires the specialist in martial arts The Master (David Carradine) to teach him self-defense. Six months later, Big Stan is sent to the Oaksburgh State Penitentiary totally confident in his expertise in martial arts. He challenges the violent leaders of the gangs and defeats them, being respected by the inmates and bringing peace in the patio. However, the dirty Warden Gasque (Scott Wilson) has the intention of transforming the penitentiary in a luxury resort, and uses Big Stan knowledge to improve his project, promising to release him sooner using the corrupt penal system.I have been a big fan of Rob Schneider since "Men Behaving Badly" and I am never disappointed with his funny movies. "Big Stan" is no exception, and this tribute to "Prison Break" and "Kung Fu" is another hilarious entertainment of this great comedian. I laughed a lot with his jokes and situations and I really recommend this comedy for those days that the viewer is down or worried with something to relax and relief the tension, or seeking an amusing and light entertainment. My vote is seven.Title (Brazil): "Big Stan – Arrebentando na Prisão" ("Big Stan – Blowing Away in the Prison")

A Nutshell Review: Big Stan

posted on 21 Feb 2009

The only other movie I remember vividly with the protagonist fearing his upcoming time spent in jail, was in Spike Lee's powerful drama 25th Hour, where we follow Edward Norton's character in his final day of freedom before being sent to the slammer. In Big Stan, Rob Schneider's crooked time-share conman Stan got arrested in the opening minutes for fraud (and you might think it's for racism), and spends much of the first act mulling over the fear of getting raped in jail, for not being part of any gang, and a first timer wussy who's easy target for the lonely tough guys behind bars. Thanks to his crooked lawyer Lew Popper (M. Emmet Walsh) and the crooked system (from the judiciary right down to the prison warden, who as the movie states, are always made to look like dicks anyway), he gets six months off before he has to present himself to the courts to begin his sentence, in in this period of time, tries his best to look "undesirable". Help comes in the form of The Master, played to good campy effect by David Carradine, star of the 70s Kung Fu series, whom I last saw in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill movies playing well, yet another stereotyped kung fu master. Thus begins the tried and very tired formula of the kooky training regime with strange food and diet, coupled with near impossible feats like titty-weight training. Granted there were some genuine sight gags, but sad to say they all get confined to this particular sequence. The trailer would have already spelt it all out for you, and suffice to say that the best bits were already inside. The story by Josh Lieb seemed to have run out of steam even before the mid-way mark, where Stan had already entered the jailhouse, and asserted his tougher than tough, no nonsense, keep away demeanour by punching the lights out of the meanest rapist in jail, and a few others. If you're looking for end to end laughter, then you're likely to be bored once Stan becomes head honcho in getting some respect in jail. With that out of the way, the movie degenerated into series of clichés, and the usual nasty warden with nasty plan routines. It didn't help that supporting characters here were stereotyped into playing stereotypes, conveniently split into the different cliques and clans.Directed by Rob Schneider himself, his films to date has somewhat been of a hit and miss for me. Lending his prowess to supporting roles like in You Don't Mess With The Zohan and Click, I thought he usually fared better in those, unlike having to carry the movie solely on his own, ala Deuce Bigelow and The Benchwarmers. What I found out unfortunately is that they usually start off strongly with quite a unique premise ripe for the cracking of some insane jokes, before fizzling out halfway and coasts through some predictable drama to the finale.Still, some laughs are better than none at all, so if you really feel that you need some light hearted medicine, then you'll find some joy in the beginning, but that's all.

Big Stan was an okay comedy directed by star Rob Schneider

posted on 17 Feb 2009

Just watched this direct-to-DVD release with my mom, who laughed during much of this one while I laughed a little less than her myself though I didn't think this was a complete waste of time. Rob Schneider directs himself in this movie adequately and gets some pretty good support from Henry Gibson, M. Emment Walsh, Jennifer Morrison, and as The Master in a parody of his iconic role in the TV series "Kung Fu", David Carradine. There's a cameo appearance by Rob's mom near the end. In this going-to-prison type movie, there's some amusing lines and scenes concerning stereotypes of homosexuals and various races and the obligatory body parts. Like I said, some of the material is funny though nothing original happens here. So on that note, Big Stan is an agreeable time-waster if you're willing.

Good one from Rob !!

I can say i am Rob Schn....'s fan. I liked this movie, its interesting, doesn't sound or look silly as most of the Adam Sandler's movies does. Its quite a entertaining movie and Rob should really come up with more number of movies under his direction. Keeping in mind its his first effort still he did a wonderful job. Acting is good by all, good number of laughs. Its not an hilarious comedy like hot chick or animal or deuce bigalo but i would say this is good time pass and worth a watch.I would recommend you to watch it for Rob Schneider.I would give it a sincere 7.

Love this movie!

I have to say I actually love this movie so much! Just like Benchwarmers also staring Rob Snider I find my self able to watch this film over and over and over again non stop! The shame of it all I guess is many like myself would never have heard of this film if it wasn't for some film fanatic who seems to know about every film. I have to this day never seen an ad or internet ad or poster about this film. Was only on the off chance that a friend showed it too me that I saw it.It's a good bit of fun with a somewhat silly but interesting story line. It's like no other film I have seen. And I guarantee you will like it!Its a great film and one of my favourites.

The Longest Yard Part 2

posted on 15 Dec 2008

The Longest Yar... I mean Big Stan is just that - Rob Schneider's version of his good friend Adam Sandler's The Longest Yard. Basic story is rich man goes to jail. Man doesn't get along with inmates. Man starts building a connection with inmates. Man is faced with moral dilemma of whether to side with the warden or his newly found friends. If you're expecting something new and hilarious you will be very disappointed. However, if you are not looking for anything more than a bit of a laugh and you enjoyed The Longest Yard, then you will probably enjoy this. Overall I would give it 6.5 out of 10 (slightly better than The Longest Yard) with David Carradine and Jennifer Morrison producing the majority of laughs out of me.

I really enjoyed this picture

It's a light-hearted prison film that works on so many levels. Rob Schneider is back in a role that we all enjoy seeing him in (I've been a fan for a while and liked him in Judge Dredd). Rob Schneider plays a character that, initially, you're not sure whether to like him or hate him, but the fact that the character is a wimp is his redeeming quality. I'm sure, as the director, Mr. Schneider played a big part in casting, and his taste in beautiful women sure fared him well on this film. The role of the wife, is played by a beautiful actress that's both witty and cleverly, naive. I can honestly say, I was entertained throughout. There were a few scenes that had me laughing out loud. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised.

You did it Rob!

Fist of all , I want to congratulate Rob Schneider in his directorial debut. This must be the funniest movie you have done! I laughed more than all your previous movies and probably more than most of Adam Sandler's movies. This movie was surprisingly (well, not so surprisingly because of the amount of "backdoor" jokes) not advertised and I do not think it made the theaters, at least not in Brasil. I am sure it will do really well on DVD rentals and sales, really funny stuff: the Carridine fella is funnier than I ever imagined he could be as a parody of himself. The first half of this movie was the better half and this was due in great part to the training scenes he is in.Praises made, this film has a very great deal of porn jokes, and by porn, I mean rape. I do not find this movie to be offensive, but it seems to stick with the rape subject from beginning to end. And that, for a light-hearted comedy movie, is not very appropriate. Taking this matter apart, I give this comedy 4/5 cause it certainly is one of the funniest movies of 2007.

A comedy that celebrates the good side of human nature

posted on 06 Sep 2008

This film is about a swindler learning to be tough to prepare for gong to prison, and while in prison he creates a series of changes for the better.Stan worries about being raped in prison, so he get a Kung Fu master to teach him martial arts to protect himself. In no time, he becomes the king in the prison, with the ability to command all the gangs. The plot is straightforward, simple and easy to digest. Three are many funny jokes and hilarious scenes. There are some gross humour, but they all stop before becoming cheap or disgusting. The best of all is the positive message about tolerance and acceptance. He manages to promote peace and unity in the prison, which is heartwarming and uplifting.Rob Schneider should be commended for making this human and uplifting comedy. Just like his previous films, his characters have hilarious adventures, but in the end there is a touching message that brings out the good side of human nature. "Big Stan" is a warm and funny film. I recommend it.

Not. Funny.

I hat the 'privilege' of watching this movie as a surprise feature in a local theater, and it was close, so very close to becoming the second movie I ever walked out from. In one word: awful. More appropriate and in five words: "oh please, make it stop". I have no idea what kind of crazy befell movie executives when they decided to bring an old direct-to-video title from the US to German theaters. The 'humor' in the flick (for want of a better word) is almost completely based on icky scenes, violence and crude sexual innuendo. Especially because of the latter this movie is not really appropriate for youngsters, which is really rather ironic since immature boys are probably the only audience that would find this insulting excuse of a motion picture even remotely funny. The rest of the world (i.e., grown-ups) will find that crude references to anal rape do not suddenly become funny if you repeat them about three dozen times. The same goes for body liquids and icky-food jokes.Apart from that, the whole premise of the film does not work, either. The idea of having a weakling become a prison's chief bully might have looked amusing on paper. It is not, at least with Schneider as the main character. The script is bad, the acting is lousy, and the directing (fittingly also by Schneider) is atrocious. Verdict: avoid at all costs.

A Pretty Good Comedy, Definitely Not The Best Of The Year, but anyone who expected that is kidding themselves.

Big Stan is the newest Edition to the Rob Schneider collection and it seems in this film the tides have turned, and instead of R.S having his butt kicked in comedic situations and getting himself into all types of trouble, in this film he is already in trouble and he is the one kicking ass.In the film we see mild mannered Stan, who is very good at his job and has a beautiful wife in a beautiful home in a beautiful neighborhood, sadly his job is illegal and he gets sentenced to three years in prison where he will meet some of the most hardened people in the world along with a warden who plans to turn the prison into a hotel once he has gotten rid of the inmates. Stan, like anyone is scared of what he might face in prison (And what other men will face too) he gets the help of the trouble MASTER. He then becomes the biggest thing in the prison game and after banning the problems with prison (Rape, Fighting and trying to break out) he realizes that inside of everyones evil selves is a good side trying to be let go. This is a light sided story I know but the parts of everyone are played well especially by Rob and THE MASTER.As for Rob, this is a lot better then some of his other films. He has not actually stared in one since The Benchwarmers back in 2005 and recently had a co star role in "You Don't Mess With The Zohan" with his Buddy and star of the film Adam Sandler. In this film, while the tide has turned on the way his character is treated, nothing has changed with the light hearted comedy Rob seems very capable of spitting out.Overall, this film is very enjoyable and I recommend if you are bored and feel like catching' a movie this one is very good. I rate it 67%.

Surprisingly funny and I mean actual funny not fake funny

Kung fu comedy with Schneider and Carradine - a cool mix of prison films and all in all just goofy in places this is a fun film to kick back to.Full of the sort of humor that Sneider fans will know and love from his other movies, Gigolo and the Animal, this is fast, furious, and fun. What is surprising is how good a kung fu pastiche this is - the finding of the Master, the training, the fight sequences are really pretty good kung fu slapstick, we may not be talking Drunken Master here but it certainly isn't pathetic. All in all an underrated and entertaining film - with lots of dumb prison jokes, some smart ideas, and Schneider doing his usual comedy with flair.
