A mythic motorcycle tale of father and son", this is the story of Manuel Galloway (Fishburne), also known as "the King of Cali", the president of a motorcycle club whose members are all African-American men, mostly white-collar workers who exchange their suits and ties at night and on weekends for leather outfits and motorcycle helmets. The focus of this story takes place at an annual drag-racing event in Fresno, as Manuel tries to retain his championship title.

RUBBISH
posted on 03 Jul 2009This movie is absolute rubbish. Not only is the plot incredibly predictable, but the realism is non-existent. As someone who's been riding street bikes for many years, I was horrified to see the characters racing with very powerful bikes on gravel roads, clearly smaller capacity bikes beating faster ones on a straight road where no real skill (apart from a good launch) is needed and one of only two female bikers in the movie suffering the usual lesbian stereotyping. I can almost see the movie executives sitting in an office and going "hey let's cash in on Fast & Furious by doing almost the exact same thing, but with bikes". Crap, rubbish and a waste of good actors' talent.
Beautiful Bikes Featured in an OK movie
posted on 23 Jun 2009Maybe Biker Boyz wasn't as good as I thought it was, but the fact of the matter is, I saw "Torque" before I saw Biker Boyz. And after having seen "Torque", any movie with street bikes in them that didn't run on pixie dust was going to be better. I honestly disregarded the acting and the plot just take a gander at the bikes and what they'd do on the bikes. There were some cool stunts and really pretty machines. Those bikes were so beautiful that I know it has skewed my judgment of the movie; but hey, at least I'm honest about it.The plot wasn't all bad... the racing aspect of it that is. Besides the racing for "lids" story, and trying to dethrone the top gun, the rest of the movie was just filler. "Biker Boyz" is decent enough to kill time.
Truly fun
posted on 01 Jun 2009The acting is actually really good. The camera was expectional; you didn't at any point notice that this was camerawork. It seemed as though everything just streamed together. Unlike the previous comments, I went to the movie theater and people couldn't hold back from clapping. The races were better than Fast and the Fuious; much more dependent on the racing than slow-motion and camera tricks like that. The story at first was absent, which gave us a good generallt light-hearted feeling to the movie, but, then as we got into the movie, the scenes became powerful, both drama and acting wise. And story/script-wise. Everything ins this movie had meat to it; you just had to look past the fluff. Then, of course, why would anyone go to Biker Boyz to do that?
Biker Boyz, an adrenaline rush with a story
posted on 06 May 2009Biker Boyz was an adrenaline rush from the word go. It was clever in its twists and turns, it had an excellent cast and delivers everything you want in a weekend, "let your hair down" movie.Although critics and reviewers alike have been vicious in their "critique" of this movie, this movie is really pretty good. One of the lead characters, Smoke, played by Laurence Fishburne is credible as the old-school, King of Cali, "knock me off the top", #1 rider in the streets. Although older, he is single, has had his fair share of women through the years (as revealed in the story) and is the leader of the Black Knights.Eriq LaSalle (from ER) is his mechanic that makes sure his bike is ready to ride and the father of Kid played by Derek Luke, (just starred in Denzel Washington's directorial debut, Antwone Fisher) who is after Smoke's crown. Vanessa Bell Calloway is excellent as Kid's mother; Orlando Jones is Smoke's #2 man and the hype artist that reps (calls out the opponent in "signifying" style, a Black cultural rhyming and insulting of one's opponent) Smoke before the race. Salli Richardson also heads the lead biker crew, the Black Knights and she is a tough lesbian with cornrows reminiscent of Queen Latifah in "Set it Off."This movie is an adrenaline rush with fine sisters and good looking brothers. The profanity is not excessive or gratuitous and the intimate scenes don't show nudity, they only show a man or woman laying together. This movie is an exciting glimpse into the motorcycle crew subculture and the stunts are X-games spectacular. The motorcycles have wicked designs including helmets (called lids) and clothing/gear. There are a lot of nuances that can be missed if not watched carefully. The conflict occurs early, is sustained, continues to convolute until the resolution phase that resolves at the very end of the movie. The dialogue is funny, rival bikers talk trash and have to let their riding "back it up." The all-star cast includes other notable, young Black actors. Larenz Tate (Dead Presidents, Love Jones) plays an excellent role as the #2 man and instigator for a rival bike crew, The Strays, led by Kid Rock. Meagan Good (Eve's Bayou and Deliver Us From Eva, which is now playing) plays Kid's love interest and does a decent job; she's believable. Finally, Kadeem Hardison (Dwayne Wayne on Cosby Show spin-off A Different World) is a wheelchair-bound member of the Biker Crew Council and hosts bike races as well as monster party blowouts.I don't often agree with critics and this time is no exception; I saw this movie with my wife and her girlfriend and we all enjoyed it. It isn't the Fast and the Furious, it's Biker Boyz. Check it out.
Bad movie... Great Stunts!
posted on 08 Apr 2009This movie is just awful. Most movies you hate to have people talk during the show... Trust me you can not ruin this movie by having cell phones and pagers going off. The experience was enhanced by people talking and making jokes. This movie is not a complete write off as there are some funny parts, great stunts and few good one liners. If you are not in to Motorcycle stunts I would not bother. The long and the short, I got a free pass and thought that it was worth the price of admission.
Awesome
posted on 11 Mar 2009I don't understand the negative views about this movie. I think that it is excellent. It shows reality and has a story line. I would rank this movie higher than a 10 if i could. Biker Boyz was well put together and was very interesting. It was a good movie with little violence, and it is also a more real approach to what a Bike crew really does. Everyone thinks that all they do is race around. They are just like a football team. I wish they would come out with Biker Boyz 2. There was drama in the movie but it went with the story line. I think that there was not an over kill of it and not to little it was very balanced. I wish that people would give it a chance and see the movie for what it is and not just a bike movie. If you sit and watch it you can really get into it. I can watch this movie anytime and day and have seen it at least 15 times. "Burn Rubber not Your Soul" is one of the best catch phrases I have heard in a movie. Stating to be true to your self. What other movies can you say that about. Everyone is so caught up in non reality and homosexuality. Lets keep our minds open instead of passing judgment. I mean we are giving movies like Broke Back Mountain better reviews that a movie that for once doesn't demonstrate that.
An excellent drama about family values and becoming a man with an exciting action backdrop.
posted on 04 Jan 2009Biker Boyz is an excellent movie with a phenomenal cast. Although the majority of the cast is African-American, it is not an African-American movie. It is a movie for everyone. The movie is a refreshing change of pace from what we ordinarily see. As well as exposing you to a cultural not many people are familiar with. A must see.
No value at all ! ! !
posted on 29 Dec 2008Considering that the two leads in this film have a good reputation both short term and long term, this film was terribly made. Short term, Derek Luke made such an astonishingly impressive contribution to 'Antwone Fisher' that while taking one step forward in his career with that film he has now taken three steps back with 'Biker Boyz'. Long term, Laurence Fishburne is such a great actor with his record of great achievements in 'Apocalypse Now', 'Boyz N the Hood', his Oscar nominated role in 'What's Love Got To Do With It' and his role as the backbone of 'The Matrix', that this was a major shock to see him in this trash. 'Biker Boyz' is a flatly directed and horribly photographed and edited mess. Not to mention the script which is as intriguing to listen to as reading graffiti off of the bathroom wall. I can think of few films that do more to take the audience's concentration out of the first half hour. Your mind wanders whether you want it to or not.
The way this film is photographed and edited makes it look like a music video reject. One angle shifts to another and you get lost in the action not knowing exactly what happened while its happening but rather knowing what happened after its over. Bizarre! I'm glad Hollywood gets this junk out of its system early in the year and then the films get better (only slight these days, however) later in the year.
Amazing Biker Movie!
posted on 03 Dec 2008Biker Boyz is another great fast adrenaline movie, withamazing talent. Derek Luke and Laurence Fishburne are both amazing as well as Orlando Jones and Kid Rock who ride in Different sets. Meagan Good is another great hot young actress who plays Derek Luke's girlfriend in the movie and you can see her in the new movie titled "Deliver Us From Eva" starring LL COOL J - gOOD jOB!
BURN RUBBER, NOT YOUR SOUL!
posted on 04 Sep 2008an entertaining, well meaning and likeable biker movie about the highs and lows of motormania through the eyes of a young black racer dude. larry fishburne gives a strong, commanding performance and is ably supported by a good supporting cast which also boasts some pretty impressive stuntwork as well as some very tasty black chicks!
Better than I thought it would be
posted on 11 Aug 2008Biker Boyz is a little decent film that isn't half bad consdering how quickly it was made. The film which was shot under the direction of Reggie Blythewood in 45 days. The script could have used a bit more work but the performances of Fisburne and Luke really highlight the film. The film has some bike stunts and is a good way to waste a Saturday afternoon.
Keep your finger on fast forward.
posted on 18 Jul 2008This will make you want to sell you street bike and burn your leathers unless you realize it was really a comedy that was mis-tagged. It is soooo cool how there is no slipstream to rip a rider off the bike at 180 mph (approximate top speed of stock 'busa) and you can sit right up on them...kind of like a dirt bike...or a gravel road bike at least. Who let that BMW R1100RS sneak in there...did you see it toward the end? California is such a cool state...I want to live there and join a "biker club".OK, OK, there were some good scenes. Like when mom kicks Kid out of the car after bailing him out of jail and makes him walk. She showed him who was boss. A spanking would have helped here, too. Poor Smoke, can't get a real job and is forced to hang around a club with....well, younger people. In fact, did anyone in that movie have a job besides Kid's mom and the tattoo artist?
Only for bike stunt lovers
posted on 06 Jul 2008The movie is barely even entertaining unless you are with a group of drinking buddies making fun of it. The only reason to watch the forced plot, weak dialogue, music video camera work waste of time is if you love motorcycles, and like watching stunts performed on them. Even then, if you really want to see that, just go get a specialty film. FOR BIKE ENTHUSIAST ONLY.
Pathetic! Lame! Horrible!
posted on 22 Jun 2008Oh my God was this movie bad! They tried to make it into a Fast and the Furious on bikes, which when you think about it, couldn't have been that difficult since F&F was no gift either. But it really is impressive how terrible this movie is!********** SPOILERS ***************** (movie is so bad, it doesn't matter)First of all, could they have picked a more lame name for their gang? Biker Boyz???? The main characters decide to start their own biker gang, and what do they call themselves? Biker Boyz???? Were they trying to steal the fire from the Back Street Boys? What a bunch of limp-wristed morons! And then they get two Asians who want to join..... on ATVs!!! ATV-Boyz??? Hahahahahahaha! You have to see the stunts in this pile of junk, you call those motorcycle stunts? They were terrible, I was laughing my head off when it was supposed to be cool! It was especially hilarious when the third founding member, a Latino guy, tries to show them how good he is on a bike. He actually stands up and sticks his leg off the back of the bike! That's it! Really! That's it! Oooooh, you have talent, you have to help us start a biker club!!! HAhahahahahahahahahha! And then there is the story of how poor old Jaleel (bad name) loses his father to a bike accident (boohoo) and his mother doesn't want him involved in bikes. They (of course) live in a perfect suburban home, she drives nice cars, and wears nice clothes. But when he invites her to the annual biker party? She turns up looking like a 2-bit tramp! Way to go Mom! Hahahahahahha! The street racing scenes were boring as sin. For instance, in the big climactic scene, the course they are racing on is on some "Greedy Farmer's Field". You can see that the finish line is only about a mile away before they even start. But they get their bikes up to 200 miles and hour and it takes roughly 10 minutes to race the mile! It was laughable! What in the world was Laurence Fishburne thinking? The only reason I gave this movie a 2 was that he was in the Matrix. That's it, there is no association with The Matrix at all, but hey, he was in it.And there was the boohoo father-son scene, hahahahahha! Standard fare in trying to bring a smidgen of drama to the flick. Then Jaleel promises his mother he will never race again..... oooooooohhhhh! Do you think he will keep his promise????? Do you????? I don't know, there are some pretty compelling reasons to race out there!! Like, BE A MAN! A challenge was issued! And a bunch of other macho BS! HAHAHAHAHAH! I think the only audience who would be impressed are The Village People! The characters in La Cage Aux Folles were more macho than these losers! And, oh my God, I nearly forgot..... Kid Rock! HAHAHAHAHA! He should call himself Skid Rock! Hahahahaha! Man, talk about the poster boy for trailer park boys! Is he EVER gross! And you have to see his gay helmet with the dog collar! HAHAHAHAHAHA! There was nothing of interest in this movie whatsoever! Even the music was terrible, what a complete and utter waste of time! At least we all now know that Lisa Bonet is still alive...... (barely).....
Just awful
posted on 25 May 2008I have never been subjected to such an awful peice of trash that makes you wonder if it can even be considered a motion picture. After seeing this, you might even wonder what idiot wrote this script. Its a Fast And The Furious ripoff, only on bikes, and the movie tries to add drama, like making the races seem so meaningful, eeveryones' life depends on it. When you finally lose your mind and kick and scream for it to end, its really just beginning. Through thinly detailed plot lines, the movie seems to stretch for hours on end. Part drama, part action, part comedy ALL CRAP
Lots of Flaws but altogether a great film
posted on 25 Apr 2008Biker Boyz is a film that is great despite its numerous flaws. The film is built using thousands of clichés and stereotypes untrue to the real world of street racing. However, despite its many flaws, which are numerous and obvious the films spirit is maintained and despite its poor score on IMDb viewed in the right way this film is incredibly good. There's a tendency to view a film coming out of the black community based on a mainly white area of life as poor before the film has even been watched. There's reasons for this and many films doing this are right to be critically panned. Some of the acting in the movie is poor, and whilst the plot is clichéd for the genre and the crew didn't do themselves any favours by not accentuating the emotional points of the plot, the film is still a solid and emotional drama. I gave this film 7 out of 10 due to the empathetic acting of Kid and Smoke (Fishbourne turns in a great performance) and hope that potential viewers aren't put off by the poor rating that it has received.
Great Movie
posted on 09 Apr 2008I got to see this movie at its premier @ Mann's Chinese Theater. I loved it. I felt it had a plot all its own, despite that I have heard many say it is a recycled Fast and the Furious. Biker Boyz had plent of action, and enough emotion to make you not want to leave to go to the bathroom. My wife held it the whole movie. I strongly suggest you go see this movie. Breakout actor Derek Luke gives a great performance.
Terrible, just terrible
posted on 25 Feb 2008I saw a special screening of this film, and special it was. I can't remember a time at the theater that was more wasteful than the time I spent with this movie. It is laughably bad. In fact, most of the audience was laughing at the "dramatic" twists and turns that occur in the film. They are all super-cliche and come out of left field. The acting is universally bad, the cinematography silly and pointless (watch for the 3 minutes in the 3rd act where the movie decides to become an extended music video), the music is uninspired, the sound design flat, and the script....well lets just say that scripts like this don't come along to often. I want to give this film credit for two things. One: The opening steadicam shot, taken directly from "Boogie Nights" really sets up the movie well and made me think that this could be something of quality. Two: The first race (and I am not giving anything away here...) and crash are really well done; however, the film never progresses from these opening moments and just keeps getting worse and worse until you wish that you were shot in the face. 2/10
This is not Shakespeare
posted on 18 Jan 2008If you want to see a serious movie, watch something else, of course, if you expect something called "Biker Boyz" to be serious you deserve to lose your hard earned cash. It's an action movie, that's pretty much it, likeable characters, more plot than the usual testosterone movie. In all honesty I saw it because it had Brendan Fehr in it but I found that the almost 2 hour run time was not deadly boring. I wouldn't have paid movie prices for it, but it was a decent rental.

Only watch if you *like* bad movies.
posted on 24 Aug 2009This movie makes 2 Fast 2 Furious look like Casablanca. It lost me less than 10 minutes into the film. For the first 3-4 minutes, we've got a montage of some motorcycle stunts, T&A, and people dancing and partying. Typical eye-candy for the pubescent. At 4 minutes Laurence Fishburne makes an entrance that reminds me of that other "film" he was in (Cadence). Of course, every unknown motorcycle racer has 100 groupies riding behind them in strict formation, putting their kickstands down in unison and doing bizarre salutes to the crowd. All a brilliantly crafted appeal to the "coming of age" crowd. Or not.The movie killed my suspense of disbelief at 11 minutes, when L.F. (after winning a race) sits *up* on his motorcycle, and does a double six-gun "salute" to the cheering crowd as he roars by. Oh yeah, he roars by at about 175mph. I know that if I so much as stick my hand outside of my fairing at 90mph to wave to another rider, my hand gets blown back *hard*. I can only marvel at the amount of skill L.F had to have to not have been blown off the bike like a drag chute on a SR-71.Other fine disbelief-removing qualities include a guy getting killed from a flying motorcycle (while staring at it the whole time as it flies through the air, he's pushing people out of the way of it, so he *knows* it's coming... wtf?), sounds of hi-revving engines while the images on the screen are of motorcycles going slowly around a dirt/gravel corners, and other miscellaneous things that fit into the "things that don't add up" category. So, after 11 minutes, I decided to enjoy this movie the same way I enjoyed other greats (Dungeons & Dragons, Episode II, etc.). After that, it was quite amusing. It's now in my list of favorites! 2/10
