She was a woman of the world. He had never been around the block.
She'd never met anyone like him. He's never met anyone... Period.
After 35 years in a bomb shelter, Adam Webber is finally going outside to play.
Brandon Fraser is Adam Weber, the child of an eccentric inventor and his wife. Following a bomb scare in the 1960s that locked the Webers in their bomb shelter for 35 years, Adam Weber must venture out into Los Angeles and obtain food and supplies for his family, and a non-mutant wife for himself. He meets Eve (Alicia Silverstone), who reluctantly agrees to help him out.

Should not have come to the present...
posted on 19 Jul 2009I wanted to enjoy this movie, largely because I have always felt that Alicia Silverstone has received a bad wrap from the press. While I don't agree with them calling her "Fatgirl," I can say that the press won't be any friendlier with her new role in "Blast from the Past," due to the fact that this movie is almost unwatchable. Take a cast, two of which are synonymous with bad movies (Walken, Spacek), and one who has not appeared in any recent pictures (Silverstone), and watch them struggle through this movie. At times, I couldn't tell if Silverstone was playing Cher from "Clueless," Emily from "Excess Baggage," or her "too cool" 90's character Eve. Walken, who has gone downhill since "A View to a Kill," continues to gain my sympathy for staying in the business. As far as plot goes, even far-fetched movies need certain elements of reality, and those elements are clearly lacking from the film. Adam, for instance, speaks French fluently, yet he has no concept of homosexuality? As far as characters go, Spacek plays an annoying mother to Adam who practically begs the audience to laugh at her. And Eve's overly-stereotypical-homosexual friend just makes you want to beat him senselessly. Somewhere between all these inane characters and bad acting lies a plot, which is sometimes forsaken for the "character development" that just doesn't happen. I won't even recommend waiting for this one to come to video. Be it in the near present or far future, avoid this one.
***1/2 out of ****
posted on 07 Jul 2009One of the most formulaic plots in Hollywood deals with that of the "fish out of water." Namely, a character being stuck in a world in which he or she does not belong, and acting accordingly, to comic results. One would think that after seeing the same setup time and time again, it would start to grow stale. Yet, Hollywood keeps making these type of movies, and they, for the most part, are almost always entertaining (George of the Jungle, anything by Tim Burton, etc.). I don't know how they do it, time and time again, but Hollywood has done it again with Blast From the Past.I loved this movie from the very beginning. It opens with the two adult leads, played by Christopher Walken (in a terrific role, playing against his stereotype), and Sissy Spacek (also terrific) throwing a party.Sure, the movie is predictable. But it's a lot of fun. Fraser is terrific in the role of someone who hasn't left his parents side for 35 years. The writing is lighthearted and fun, and everyone involved seems to be having a good time. The only real problem I had with the film involve a running gag about the resident of the building directly above the fallout shelter. This was funny for a while, but they took the joke too far, and by the end, the joke got old. The film was also a tad overlong, and the score was kind of lame at times. But these are very minor complaints, when you take into account how good the movie is as a whole. I highly recommend this film. It is lighthearted, and very, very funny. It's a movie you can go to, and just have fun with. I, for one, had a really good time.
A gentle comedy.
posted on 27 Jun 2009With a title like that, it's just got to be a comedy! And so it is, though I didn't die of uncontrollable laughter. It's a gentle comedy about a man born to parents who built themselves an underground nuclear shelter. Born below ground, and educated extremely well by his doting parents, Adam doesn't see light of day until he is 35. Honest, affectionate and so very naive, he yearns for a woman and goes up into the wicked world above.
There's a certain pleasure in sharing Adam's first time experiences in the material word. It is refreshing to observe that money means nothing to him.
He has a basketball card ( a real collector's item) worth $6000. He says to his newly found girl friend, " You can have this for driving me home!!"
There are little incidents like this that deserve a chuckle. The film writer is pointing an accusing finger at us and the world generally with our distorted ideas and values. For me, the funniest scenes involved a disreputable unshaven down and out who had had far too many drinks in the bar built over and above the nuclear shelter. When Adam comes up through the floor and announces he is the son, the man is shaken believing he is experiencing the second coming. When father appears, he announces that he is the father. The man then is absolutely convinced. Mother follows soon after and says she is the mother. The poor man collapses and I nearly did too. It's a really funny scene that for me is one of the highlights of the film. The nuclear shelter is incredibly luxurious, clean and tidy, with its 60's furnishings. Suffice to say that father who built the shelter is a proclaimed genius. Mother busies herself making clothes from curtains etc.
Adam's good nature, honesty and naivety give him the wherewithal to win through a series of adventures and finally to win the girl of his dreams.
It pays not to question or analyse too deeply. As I said, it's a comedy with a happy ending. If you like this kind of theme, try "Bad Boy Bubby" who also discovers a crazy world beyond his lock-up.
A cute story about people from different times!!!
posted on 27 Jun 2009This story is about a family who gets accidently trapped in a fallout shelter in the 1960's. While they the couple give birth to a baby son. Many years latter, the son grows up and still does not know what really happened to the city above the shelter. The family runs out of food. So the parents send Adam(the son) to the surface to get supplies. Adam has many problems dealing with life in the late 1990's. Eventually he meets Eve(played by Alicia SilverStone) . Eve and Adam encounter many problems. Eventually the two people fall in love. But Eve and Adam have to deal with other problems besides love!!This movie also co-stars Christopher Walken(Sleepy Hollow) as Adam's dad and Sissy Spacek,JFK) as Adam's mother!!If you look carefully you can see Rex Linn as a friend of the Webber's just before the house is destroyed by a missile by mistake!!!
The first non-apocalyptic film about nuclear war
posted on 23 Jun 2009Yes, everything Theo Robertson says is true but it's not just a comedy it's also a fantasy. Yes, it is impossibly hard to credit the idea of people surviving as they do in a nuclear bunker for 35 years but who cares? It's a good and very entertaining movie. Christopher Walken and Sissy Spacek do very well. Brendan Fraser is excellent. Adam Webber is a bit Forrest Gump-like but unlike Forrest Gump he hasn't taken part in recent events in American history, he's missed them altogether! It's brilliant the way the film also makes fun of religious cults.I recommend that anyone who has depressed themselves by watching a video of Threads or The Day After to watch this film as an antidote.
A little bit amusing and a big bit time killer.
posted on 18 May 2009This is a childish movie. Nevertheless it is very amusing at some points. If I compare it with American Pie I must say that the humor in Blast from the past is more friendly. More as if you laugh with the people instead of at them. The movie has no deeper meaning as so many other movies in this genre. If you want to lay back in the chair and just get amused for one and a half hour rent this movie. It is okidoki but not fantastic.
A very cute movie!
posted on 23 Apr 2009I didn't see this film in the theatre, because the preview looked cheesy. But when my friend rented the video, I enjoyed every second of it. This is a completely refreshing cute movie. Brendan's performance is just adorable. After watching the video, I told myself, I have to get the DVD.
Hey, it's Christopher Walken in a silly mood!
posted on 20 Apr 2009First of all, everything me and my friend's laughed at in this movie had something to do with that madcap maniac Walken! He is outrageously funny! When Fraser get's up to the surface and the romance between him and Silverstone begins the movie bog's a bit. See it only for Christopher Walken!6/10.
Harmless romantic comedy
posted on 20 Apr 2009I saw this as an in-flight movie, and it's pretty much perfect in that role. Harmless, light stuff, with a few very good scenes. The "everything was better in the 50's" underlying assumption kept popping up and annoying, but not enough to spoil the film. Overall, a very likeable film.
A LITTLE MORE BLAST AND A LITTLE LESS PAST
posted on 27 Feb 2009Imagine yourself never seeing the light of day. Being underground thinking that all life is extinct. Living for 35 years underground WITH CHRISTOPHER WALKEN!!!!! Well, not surprisingly it leads Adam Webber's dear old mother to heavily drinking. This was good even after a somewhat slow start. They spend too much time in the shelter watching him grow up. Although I can understand why. I mean you have a talent like Christopher Walken you want to use it. Some of those scenes work and, overall, do set up the movie well. It just gets it off to a bumpy start. But after getting past that point the movie sails much smoother.Fraser plays the naive young man who doesn't know anything about our world today. Fascinated by the sky the ocean and excited to see a Negro. (his words mine no hate mail please) Silverstone plays the aimless attractive young woman whose relationships have left her in her current jaded state. Fraser's innocents and gentleman charm which is unheard of to the characters of this movie wins her heart. Fraser discovering this modern world had plenty of funny moments and the rest of the cast helped carry the rest of the movie along.Silverstone was at her best since at least Clueless, maybe her best ever (although I realize that isn't saying much if you're going by movies like Batman). David Foley was great and had many of the funny moments in this movie. Some of the scenes did not work like when at the end of the movie it's in slow motion. I see what they were trying but it just didn't work for me. Other scenes like the cult that had started to worship them did work well although the early scenes that set it up will puzzle you for awhile. So, overall I say it is worth your money if you're looking for a good comedy. 7.8 out of 10
really cute!
posted on 10 Feb 2009Brendan Fraser and Alicia Silverstone make a wonderfully funny team in this movie! Brendan does a great job playing a daft grown man, who was raised underground, so when he is released to the surface, he is curious and has so much fun and runs into Alicia. Its such a fun movie! Christopher Walken and Sissy Spacek play Brendans parents, they are hilarious! I definately recommend giving this funny love story a shot!
Maybe I saw a different movie, did positive reviewers get paid?
posted on 09 Feb 2009Um. I'm confused. This movie was cute and sometimes annoying, but nowhere as wonderful as some of these past comments I have been reading.Am I the only one who saw this movie that thought Alicia Silverstone was so incredibly wrong for this role? I kept hoping for someone with more range and depth and well....talent. Say, Drew Barrymore?Look how her character was dressed! Working in a trading card shop in a sleezy neighborhood? She looked like she was from the brady brunch. Hellooooo wardrobe check! But everyone else was a delight. I just kept wishing for a different actress for Silverstone's role. That high pitched whine a la clueless kept coming out...I'm sorry, I thought she was supposed to be cynical and jaded. She sounded like a spoiled rich girl...hmmmm...sound familiar? And there was some major cornball moments between Fraser and Silverstone that had me rolling my eyes so much, it hurt.Christopher Walken and Sissy Spacek are great of course. And David Foley is always funny.6/10
Charming, Funny and Hip!
posted on 02 Feb 2009Meet Adam Webber(Brendan Fraser, The Mummy, George of the Jungle), born and raised in a bomb shelter with his mad scientist father(Christopher Walken, Pulp Fiction) and his sherry swilling mother(Sissy Spacek, JFK). Adam's simple childhood has been filled with Perry Como records, The Honeymooners re-runs and good old-fashioned family values. Now, 35 years later, Adam is about to emerge into a bewildering modern world in search of supplies and a simple girl from Pasadena. Instead, Adam meets Eve(Alicia Silverstone, Clueless) a modern LA woman, jaded about life and burned by love. The result is an engaging romantic comedy that's charming, funny and hip!
I love this movie
posted on 01 Feb 2009I watched this movie so many times over the past few years and I must say that I love it. It reminds me of how people used to be way back when. The parents in this movie remind me of my GrandMother and the way she raised me. The story, the plot, and the acting are all super. The comedy is so natual and the main characters compliment each other so well. This is an excellent movie that is good clean fun for the whole family. My grandmother(god rest her soul) and I watched this movie together before she past and she enjoyed it like no other modern movie she has ever saw. As a matter of fact she used to fall asleep on movies a lot.
Sweet!
posted on 30 Jan 2009Often simple story lines work best, and Blast from the Past fits that rule. It's a delicate little gem. Silverstone in one of her better roles, and Brendan Fraser really becomes the 35 year old goody two shoes meeting today's world for the first time in his life. Basically everything works in this sympathetic little film, from Silverstone's gay friend ***** minor spoilers (Not surprisingly Fraser never gets the message when Silverstone describes her friend as such) to the Archbishop and his weird collection of devoted followers who think they have seen Jesus, his father and mother Mary pop out of their underground dwelling. ***** I think the script writer and director managed to squeeze about every conceivable time lapse misconception in the scenario in a way that works and skipped the overly obvious ones that would have made this film a corny event. Nowhere the film lapses into a cheap series of "Seve Martin/Leslie Nielsen" type jokes just for the sake of inducing a laugh. Focus remains with the inevitable storyline, which is rather predictable, something that can ruin a film, but sometimes work in its favour, as it does here. A heart warming pastime, well worth taking up space in your DVD collection. Watching such a film one could easily be tempted to think making it was a breeze. Having seen tons of other movies in the same genre certainly proves making a good film, even a light comedy, is nothing but. Glad I watched it, watched it again, and I will certainly give it another go in the near future.
*Sob. . .* How Sweet. . .
posted on 29 Jan 2009Most movies of this genre are not supposed to be taken really seriously. They are there to make you realize that your loved one is really special. They are also there to make you realize what we have taken for-granted. Brendan Fraser's innocence to real life in this movie will make you think twice when you pass by the awe-inspiring ocean or look up into the marshmallow-filled azure sky. So don't gripe when a movie doesn't have too much chemistry between characters! YOU do the character developing in life--just use these movies as a reference! By the way, the whole swing-dancing scene is just totally awesome (even though I'm sure it's not Fraser that's really dancing). This movie gives you reason to cuddle up with your girlfriend (or boyfriend or husband or wife. . .). Fraser is just too cute!

Poor Quality DVD
posted on 29 Aug 2009View this movie as soon as you receive it. We waited until months later and it skips all over the place at the beginning and at the end. Tried it in different players, as well as my PC with no success. It made my Windows Media Player crash. I thought although it's new, maybe it has something on the back causing it to stick. When we tilted it to the light, there are tons of little circle blemishes all over it. Too late to return. Please view your movies within the return date.
