Appalling in every way possible

Film24 broadcast this film last night and the synopsis gave the impression that it was going to be a "Birdcage" afloat. I have never felt so moved as to write a review and was heartened to see that most other reviewers thought this was an appalling film.I switched off just before the part where the sidekick mistakenly hops into bed with the trainer, thank goodness by all accounts as another reviewer describes the remainder of the scene and it was even worse that I suspected it would be. With hindsight, I cannot believe I watched for 45 minutes.OK, so I'm neither teenage of male so perhaps I shouldn't have been watching this in the first place but really there is absolutely nothing to redeem this film in any way that could not be otherwise fulfilled by the sort of film that doesn't have a script at all.I really must remember to read IMDb BEFORE I watch films in the future.

Insulting to homosexuals, Hollywood and just about everybody else.

to sum it up 'Boat Trip' is probably the worst film i've seen in years. Its difficult to start the a review when there is so much wrong with it. 'Boat Trip' documents the journey of 2 heterosexual friends who are obsessed with sex and girls and after one is rejected by his girlfriend after being sick on her, they decide to take a cruise to pull girls. However they are booked onto a gay cruise after insulting the travel agents boyfriend. The guys are unaware of this until there are at sea. soon a stranded dingy load of hot women are rescued from the water and Nick tries his best to hitch up with one of them whilst Jerry chases after a female dance teacher by pretending to be gay to get closer to her..and so on. There are several aspects wrong with this film: 1) casting 2) seemingly negative stereotypes 3) terrible humour and cliché's 4) extremely weak script and unimpressive cinematography. The main characters are played by actors that aren't seen more frequently in the cinema due to their terrible acting abilities. And i can only assume that the supporting roles including Roger Moore and Bob Gunton regret ever signing up to make this film because its done nothing for their acting reputations. None of the casting choices seem to suite their characters and can be really creepy at times. This film is full of stereotypes. The obvious one is the gay stereotype which is cringe worthy and seems as if it could be insulting. The heterosexual stereotype is also met in this film and is boring. The humour in this film is ridiculously awful and cliché, the sexual innuendo is overwhelming and gets boring after the first ten minutes. this type of humour would only be enjoyed by immature 13 year old boys. The script is equally terrible and seems to have no real direction and seems just to be a load of unconnected events which you tire of quickly. The script seems to have no social message or dramatic intent. The cinematography is pretty unimpressive and looks like they've just thrown the shots together without thinking about them-really nothing special.Oh and before i forget, the musical score seems cheap and lousy and becomes irritating. The film is an insult to gay people, heterosexual people and film makers alike. It really isn't worth the rental or purchase and its an hour and a half of your life you'll never get back. Don't waste your time watching this film as its mindless dribble thought up as a money making scheme rather than the sake of proper entertainment. This really is an awful film...save yourselves before its too late!

Fun

Okay people, i read so many mixed reactions about this one, that I literally tip toed to watch it. My friend Evan hated, and said it was worse than Dogville, but my Dad said it was great. And i am a big Horatio Sanz fan, but who isn't?!... so I ventured.I loved it! Don't let the liberal media fool you, Academy Award winner Cuba Gooding Jr. is a great comedian and scholar, and he manages to cruise this moving picture with grace and gusto. There are some darker, gross out moments, but they serve the story (just like the gross out moments in any Cronenberg or Bela Tarr films). Vanessa Williams (Ugly Betty) is great as the b***h, but her character is well developed and goes well beyond clichés.Till next time.

Lookin' for love in all the wrong places....

Hey, it sure wasn't Masterpiece Theatre but I laughed so hard I cracked a rib. TONS of low-brow humor! Every offensive stereotype in the book. Not a "Politically Correct" moment in the whole freakin' movie. I loved it! Very much in the spirit of all those old early-eighties sex comedies. Two guys, one just out of a bad relationship and his obnoxious, oversexed best pal, try to get away on a singles cruise. They end up insulting their travel agent who sends them on a gay cruise out of spite.(Don't worry; lots of hot chicks show up anyhow!) It's one part "Birdcage" mixed with two parts "Porky's".If you're into comedies of manners, you might wanna take a pass on this one. But if you're sick of over-polished, politically correct crap, you might want to check it out.

a cheesy film with very sad acting

When i first saw this film, i thought it was a little funny and it had some hot chicks in it as well, but it just was not good at all, except a little bit entertaining. Anyway, Cuba Gooding Jr. has put himself in an all-time low. The last 3 or 4 movies he's been in except for American gangster, sucked. He needs to take a breather and stop making dumb movies, like Daddy Day Camp and Boat Trip. Now to the plot. The plot was actually pretty decent, two straight guys going on a cruise that turns out to be a gay cruise, but they just didn't pull it off very well. It would have been better if they had better acting and the scenes were more entertaining. 5/10

Despite mistake of seeing for Will Ferrells bit was actually OK film.

Boat trip is the 2002 movie starring Cuba Gooding Junior and Horanta Sanz that I originally only watched it because of the 60 seconds Will Ferrell was in it for. The movie is about Jerry and Nick who mistakenly get on a gay trip after a gay and angry travel agent(Will Ferrell) sends them maliciously on a cruise for homosexuals. The movie is pretty funny while will definitely never make it even close to the top 100 best comedy movies ever it is good for a few laughs. I think that Cuba Gooding Junior would have had a lot of fun doing this and Horanto Sanz is really creepy but I think he was meant to be. Overall I think this movie was lots of fun and you should sit down for 90 minutes and laugh out loud. I rate this movie 63%. This movie would be most liked by people 15-25.

Uses every cliché you don't want to see.

I am really tired of fish out of water comedies about straight men pretending to be gay. They aren't funny! Generally they rely on every single cliché there is, the biggest one being the hot chick letting the "gay" guy see her naked or feel her up, which of course, is used in this stupid movie. In this idiotic picture, two super straight guys, Jerry and Nick, end up on a gay cruise after hurting the feelings of the person booking the cruise, played in a cameo by Will Ferrell. They go on the cruise and "gay"os ensues. Cuba Gooding Jr. acts like an idiot the entire movie and isn't funny, and Horatio Sanz is annoying too. I'd say my least favorite part of the film was the ending, in which my jaw dropped out of the sheer stupidity I had just witnessed.I'm tired of these stupid movies, and I'm just plain tired of Cuba Gooding Jr. comedies. My rating: BOMB/****. R for language and sexual humor

Abominable ! This Movie Stinks !

This movie is so awful it made me dizzy after watching it for only 15 minutes! But I have to watch until the end, hoping it'll get better. Unfortunately, it didn't.It's a story about two guys, Jerry Robinson and (Cuba Gooding Jr.) Nick Ragoni (Horatio Sanz) who went to a cruise ship meant for gay people. Why, you'd asked? That was because they offended a travel agent, and the travel agent decided that he wanted to have the last laugh. So to a boat trip, they went. There they met wacky people and met with many spastic incidences. There you have it. A promising storyline. But the movie fall short of expectation. The performances was subpar, especially Cuba Gooding Jr. I personally think it's his worst acting to date. The others are also none the better, save for the acting by Roselyn Sanchez, who plays Gabrielle. Other than her, nobody seems to be putting enough effort on their acting.Nuff said. To those who wish to watch this movie, heed my warning. Find another movie instead.

Woeful mishap

There are movies out there that have potential when you read the back of the DVD or video box cover. No matter how implausible the set-up, you imagine it's POSSIBLE that a good movie could be made of almost any plot outline.Certainly the same could be expected here; that without resulting to rampant homophobia, an OK, if unspectacular, comedic movie could be made by a twist on the old fish-out-of-water plot of putting two straight guys on a gay cruise. To its credit, the film does not resort to homophobia, but does play a lot of its humor on blatant, and perhaps tired, stereotypes - something that is not unique to this film, as much of broad comedy plays off of stereotypes of one form or another. The next problem is that the jokes that are made - largely on the basis of these stereotypes - tend to be very obvious and therefore not very funny. Cuba Gooding deciding to accept a role in this will basically be one of the biggest enigmas of movie history. The humor is aimed at a basic, almost puerile level, giving no hint of genuine wit, and this detracts greatly from the film as a whole, dragging it down well below average. Another mystery is that they could not come up with a better title. It's a film about a trip taken on board a boat. This we know. They couldn't have found anything more interesting to call it?

GREAT MOVIE!!! Must watch and/or buy!

If you like funny movies, this movie is for you. I could watch this movie every day and never get tired of it. There is some FUNNY stuff in this movie.I even bought two copies of this DVD in case the first gets scratched or otherwise damaged. If you are not an uptight person and can relax and watch a good, funny movie...then this movie is for you. NOT FOR KIDS THOUGH. I have only seen the unrated version. This movie does not deserve the negative review provided by the frustrated film critic wanna-bee.There are some priceless scenes in this movie that make it worthy of any DVD collection. I know about 80+ people who love this film. I know of no one who dislikes it.Kudos to Roselyn Sanchez's wardrobe. Very sexy & teasing. I also love the very kinetic version of the "Lime & the Coconut" tune. :) I believe in a reward system. If you like a movie, buy it. (That probably explains why I never purchased a Will Ferrell movie.)

Will You Survive?

Although funny in spots Boat Trip falls back on a whole lot of clichés involving gay people to tell a rather dreary tale. Two lunkheads, Horatio Sanz and Cuba Gooding, Jr. get into a fight with a travel agent who decides he'll have the last laugh. He books them on a singles cruise all right, a gay singles cruise, not at all what they were expecting.Sanz has talked Gooding into it after Gooding has decided he needs some space away from his fiancé Viveca Fox.If this had been done thirty years ago I can see Laurel and Hardy as the leads here. Of course stuff about homosexuality wasn't exactly being done in Stan and Ollie's day. Problem is that Sanz and Gooding just don't have a real gift for comedy that was needed. There is a rather droll performance in here by Roger Moore who plays a lecherous and rich old gay guy. It's the highlight of the film.Sad, but unfortunately Boat Trip falls back on too many clichés about gay people in its attempts at humor. Noel Coward was definitely not writing this material.I for one, don't know, don't want to know the words to I Will Survive and I don't mourn the death of disco. I don't know that many who do.Still there are a few laughs to be had in Boat Trip, but they're few and far between.

Cliché city

Two straight guys end up on a gay cruise. I really, really wonder how anyone could have thought that this simple idea would make for a good and funny movie, but unfortunately a lot of people thought so and there we are. Damm who is Cuba's agent?I mean, in my opinion the worst kind of movies are bad comedies. I can live with bad action movies or bad horror movies or even bad dramas. But watching a really bad comedy is like getting beaten up. Other bad movies at least can make you laugh (sometimes) but if a comedy is really bad there's nothing left to enjoy.I can honestly say that "Boat Trip" is one of the worst comedies I have ever seen! This film reminds me of movie's like the bikini shop or meatballs but they were funny when i was 12. The story itself is awful and even worse, unbelievably predictable. There isn't a joke you don't see coming miles before it happens and it's always one you really wish won't happen, because it is such a bad one. But every joke here hits its bad mark and leaves you with nothing more to do than to stare at the screen in disbelief. The whole "gay" issue is handled as bad as possible. There is not a single "normal" gay person on this ship. Everyone is a kind of a freak, dresses like a woman, makes exaggerated moves and is saying "uh" and "oh" and "ohoho" and "ohlala" and things like that all the time. Every cliché you can imagine about a gay man is implanted here and beaten so long until it's last drop of life vanishes. And it's all about sex. Everyone is kissing and touching and making sexual advances at everyone else. At the breakfast buffet there is an ice sculpture that looks like a bunch of penises. That's supposed to be funny. When one character makes a change of mind from hating gays to being gay it is so unconvincing that 1 minute later he is running after one of the babes. The other guy has to act as if he's gay so he can sleep with the girl he loves (don't ask about the logic). When they do so under an orange tree, oranges fall down, so that afterward they are covered in about 100 oranges. He also does a dance show as a drag queen for about 3 minutes. Everyone is shocked or disgusted about being gay, no matter if it's a man or a woman. Imagine that: this movie is about gays and it isn't even sure itself, if it should tolerate them. When one guy starts philosophizing that gay people may not be so bad after all you're almost ready to believe him.The characters are unbelievable cut-out stereotypes played by untalented actors with no conviction at all.

I didn't know acting could get this bad

posted on 30 Aug 2009

Just as a mild warning, I will mention a non-pivotal scene in the movie. Now that the formality is out of the way, Oh my God, after seeing Jerry Maguire and Men of Honor I thought Cuba Gooding, Jr. was a quality actor, but seeing him try to play drunk and homophobic is pathetic. In one scene he drunkenly stumbles and hits his head on a metal post. I wonder if they filmed this scene the first day, because something knocked all the talent out of him. But then again, every actor did poorly, so maybe it was just a bad screenplay. I will have to admit I didn't actually sit through the entire movie mostly because it was too painful to watch, which should tell you something right there because I will give just about everything a chance. I even sat through Mortal Kombat 2 - and those of you who saw it know just how bad that was.

Average idea with a poor execution

posted on 30 Aug 2009

Boat Trip isn't a bad idea for a movie, 2 straight guys go on a cruise looking for love, only to find that its a gay cruise and all their fellow cruisers are men. Potentially this is a scenario that should have made us laugh ourselves silly; well i'm sorry to say that it doesn't, you may raise the occasional smile and if your lucky you may even titter once or twice, but that's your lot.Boat trip is average in every department and Cuba Gooding Jnr. should stick to making movies like Men of Honour and Instinct; he is simply better at playing this type of character. It's not a total waste of time, but it's certainly a disappointment 5/10

Excellent comedy; full of dramatic irony and puns

posted on 30 Aug 2009

I thought it was an excellent comedy with lots of entertainment! It was filled with sexual humor and several play on words. It constantly used dramatic irony, events contrary to what was expected. As long as you can have an open mind for entertainment, this movie will keep you laughing from beginning to end. There are a few gray areas of laughter but overall it is a fun film. There is no big storyline to examine but just two ordinary people (Jerry and Nick) seeking good, satisfying relationships with women; however, the deeper underlying story takes the viewers into exploring the pleasure and fun in gay relationships. The movie has a delicate base for old timers; but in 2004 when it was released, society had presented a lot of gay issues to review, including gay marriages. This is therefore, a fun look into the gay society which also reflects a positive image towards gay people.

i watched two minutes of this movie and knew it was terrible

posted on 30 Aug 2009

Read these reviews and think about the people who would actually sit through this entire movie that some of us can only tolerate for two minutes. Then see that even THEY would rate the film with a 3 or 4. That's how bad the movie is.Apparently, when writing a review, you need to write a minimum of 10 lines of text in order for it to be accepted. I'm suddenly sympathetic toward the folks who attempt to add one more thought, one more adjective or adverb, in order to fulfill the 10-line minimum. Does that affect the outcome of their review? Why hasn't anyone else mentioned this? It's like Hurricane Erika. The movie is as confusing as paragraph one. You keep going in circles until you realize it's the worst movie ever made, in that it has identical qualities with every other worst movie ever made. Here's the spoiler: this movie is terrible.

I found this movie thoroughly enjoyable.

Enjoyable farce about two somewhat helpless nerds trying to get success with the opposite sex on an exclusive boat trip. The comedy is well below the belt for most of the time, with humorous, zany and embarrassing scenes coming at you at an increasing pace. The two guys first notice a peculiar amount of men present on the boat, then realize they are on a five-day non-stop cruise aboard the "homotanic". Jokes are in abundance, and most of the time they are clever and inspiring. When one of the guys calls out in desperation, after the boat has left port, "Where can I get off?", one of the other passengers laconically replies, "try the Velvet room". Don't expect rocket science here, but feel free to laugh out loud. PS: Roger Moore gives a great performance as a senior homosexual, previously working for the British government as a secret agent (guess who).

Too Stupid to Offend

posted on 30 Aug 2009

Give me a bad movie and I'll give you a reason to rip it apart, slowly, methodically, with great tenderness and attention to detail, until nothing is left. (And this is only based on approximately a little under an hour of watching it on television, which after commercials amounts to about 45 minutes -- to see any more would be my own fault and I would deserve any pain and suffering this "trip" would give me.)How I wandered into this mess that pretends to dub itself a "movie" is really beyond me. Then again, this is what happens when you surf the channels at a time of night when you should be sleeping and dreaming of images sweet and profound, but I'm not exactly a night sleeper, and this train wreck was in the throes of brandishing its wreckage like it was the hottest thing being auctioned off at Christie's or a massive meal flaunted at a famished crowd.First and foremost, Cuba Gooding Jr. needs to return his Oscar for JERRY MCGUIRE. Since 1997 he's been giving performance after performance that rival sheer badness and this has made him a poster boy for When Oscars Happen to Bad Actors. Faye Dunaway went through it, Louise Fletcher did the same, and Kevin Costner is still trying to regain his former shine as a reliable actor making relevant movies (but at least he hasn't sunk to these levels).BOAT TRIP is beyond bad. It's really not offensive due to the fact that most gay people whom I know have basically laughed it off as inconsequential even as the promos were shown way back in 2002 when it was being advertised. Because of its massive failure of near-historic proportions it really is hard to be angry at this pile of garbage. What it is, though, is begging, imploring to be dissected like a frog in a science lab.Secondly. Gay men aren't only obsessed with Liza. There are, in fact, more. Gay men aren't only about "I'm Coming Out" ("I Will Survive" or "Go West", anyone?). Someone didn't do his homework! Get's your facts in check, Mort! At least Roger Moore has a little fun with his role of a cookie-cutter older queen. Any other "gay" person here stinks of fake, fake, fake. Also, the premise of a man pretending to be gay to win the love of a woman is insulting to audiences as watching hee-haw humor. It doesn't happen. Straight men, at least the ones who know who they are, don't want to be taken for gay, and unless they're comedians making a living like Milton Berle did, the only reason to dress up in drag would be to make people laugh. That doesn't happen here in this maggot-infested wreck.So. We're past Cuba Gooding Jr. as An Atrocious Actor who Once Won an Oscar. His career is done. He can pack his bags and head for the nearest retreat until he decides to return to the land of the living and make a decent movie. Vivica Fox is something else, though. I used to think she was a great actress trying to break out and claim her own, but her recent incursions into plastic surgery and that picture of one lumpy geography on her chest as well as her participation in this film has destroyed any illusions that she'll give a memorable performance. Playing one of the stupidest women I've seen on screen -- one who's never, ever seen a gay man with butt-less chaps and shrieks at the sight of one (as if!), she's a prime candidate to get herself brained in the head with a brick. Repeatedly. Then there's Horatio Sanz. One of the worst things to have happened to "Saturday Night Live" in recent years, he's a supreme eyesore who never bothers to act as he never bothers to perform his skits on the TV show (and why Lorne Michaels hasn't fired his fat behind from the show is anyone's guess). He has no sense of acting, hew just sits there and grows fatter by the moment like bib lettuce, making even the most moronic "comedian" look like a member of Mensa. If anyone somehow manages to make something with her role is Roselyn Sanchez. She looks like a younger Fran Drescher, without the annoying voice and exuding that special something even though her character is equally stupid in not being able to figure out a gay man from a straight, especially on a cruise like this.Meaningless on every single level, fodder for trash that should remain as such, a career killer, the reason people in the world hate Americans and send pesky tapes proclaiming messages of terror. It's too bad and too lousy to really hurt. I'd be madder at a movie like ADAM AND STEVE or O FANTASMA who are exercises in mediocre stories with gay characters who somehow fail to make the cut. This is less than inconsequential. Gay men in this movie are as outlandishly stereotyped as people in black-face have been in the past, and it could probably be vaguely helpful for "Mort Nathan" to acquaint himself with some gay people -- male or female, since the lesbians here are equally pathetic -- and get his mind out of the trashcan. Cuba Gooding Jr. could also benefit, since he screeches and whines and screams like a little girl whose G-string is too tight. If IMDb.com had a "zero" rating, this would be the sole winner. Toilet-level crap like this make me re-evaluate other failed movies like THE NEW WORLD (real movies who fail for other reasons having to do with aesthetics) and make the attempt to see if I missed anything. Such is the power of "So bad it's terrible with raisins in it" or "so bad it deserves to be on display at the Guggenheim, under glass so it doesn't infect anyone."

DVD Topless Women a Sign of Things To Come

posted on 30 Aug 2009

When I saw the surgically modified nude women from the waist up on the menu, I immediately got the DVD out to make sure Netflix hadn't sent me a cheesy porno by mistake. But, the label said Boat Trip. Against my better judgment, I put the disc back in to watch the movie. The gags and jokes were universally unfunny. The gay stereotypes weren't even charming. The actors, such as Maurice Godin as Hector, didn't believe in their characters enough to sell them. The acting was so stiff and unnatural, I felt like the cast was in on a joke they weren't sharing with the audience. I'm just glad to know that Roselyn Sanchez who played Gabriella has gone on to better things on "Without a Trace". I got the impression that the cast had a lot of fun making the movie. Too bad they couldn't transfer that vibe to the audience.

I didn't hate it... In fact I laughed a lot

posted on 30 Aug 2009

I know I know this is a stupid movie. I know it's dumb and childish, but I guess so am I. A friend gave the DVD when he moved and I put it in just to have something to watch while I ate lunch but had no intention of finishing... but here's the thing... I could not stop laughing and I watched the whole thing. It's not well acted and the plot is laughable, but that is what I did. It was sort of like Dumb and Dumber meets a gay Porky's.I know why a lot people did not like it but I had absolutely no expectations and I ended up laughing. The women are hot and Roger Moore is stupid funny. If you are looking for Howard's End don't watch this. If you are shutting off the brain and want a few chuckles then check it out.
