When a crime is committed on the border of Quebec and Ontario, everyone is forced to come together, whether they want to or not. As the investigation gets underway, we meet David Bouchard and Martin Ward, members of their respective provincial police forces who are forced to work together. The two men couldn't be more different. In fact, the only thing they appear to have in common is that they are both cops, albeit cops with totally different styles.

A gem

When a body is found on the billboard of the border of Quebec and Ontario a cop from each province are teamed together to investigate.Amusing buddy film refuses to follow the rules of the buddy film genre and is all the better for it. Sure one cop is gruff and one neat but even though they argue they do become rapid friends because there is some sort of respect from the start. They nicely drawn characters, like everyone in this movie. These are people you really do like. The mystery isn't all that mysterious since a good number of the pieces fall into place early, but at the same time this allows for the movie to go off in its own way, with a couple of twists I didn't see coming. The action scenes are well done, and like the rest of the film don't follow the typical patterns-people get hurt and bleed. Best of all its really funny, not joke funny but humor coming out of the characters. I really like the film. There is one problem with the film, at least for a large portion of American audiences and thats half the film is in French. Its subtitled but the characters bounce back and forth between English and French freely (and even conjugate curse words). If you don't mind the on again off again titling I highly recommend this film.

Quebec vs Ontario

This is a French Canadian production which certainly can't match the best Hollywood ones. The photography of this movie is horrible along with the colors. Everything is sort of green. Some situations are brought to the extreme where the actors overact. Despite these premises the movie works fine! Entertaining! We have a French cop and an English one. Each one speaks his own language giving the movie a colorful tone. The dualism works fine along with the charisma the actors have. The action is good, the suspense also. Everything is very ironic. When the action stops the excellent chemistry between the actors kicks in and the movie is really fun. We are ready for a sequel.

Lots of fun

It's rare that a Canadian movie has people talking like this one. What other subjects than the so-called rivalry between Ontario and Québec could have made a better film? Add to that our national sports, hockey, and you've got a winner. It's a winner also because it's funny, especially the first half. The location where the first body is found is hilarious! Patrick Huard and Colm Feore are both doing an excellent job. They're supported by a great cast. I especially like Pierre Lebeau. That guy knows how to swear! Of course, it's full of clichés and stereotypes that the population from the two provinces (English and French) have of the other. But that's why it's so funny. I hope this film does very well at the box-office. My guess though is that people from outside Canada will not find it as interesting. But too bad! Seen in Toronto, at the Beach Cinemas, on August 18th, 2006.79/100 (***)

Absolutely hilarious. I compared it to Lethal Weapon, while hubby compared it to Beverly Hills Cop. Loved the interplay between Colm Feore and Patrick Huard, and the conversation between them with Patrick explaining the hierarchy of Quebecois swearing was hilarious. Also the two stoned cops getting read the riot act for losing the body and the house when Patrick Huard's search of the basement goes so horribly wrong.I also loved the "You're in Quebec, we work in French" and the subsequent "You're in Ontario, we work in English" byplay, and also when the Quebec cop finds out the the Ontario cop speaks perfectly good French (tee hee).As well, the scene in the Montreal forensics lab, with both the Ontario and Quebec cops not really following what the lab tech is saying.Absolutely great.

plays on stereotypes in a most funny way

This film plays on the stereotypes Canadian Anglophones have of Quebeckers in a simply hilarious way (including lessons on how to swear properly in Québec). An Ontarian cop and a Quebec cop forced to work together could only lead to this, right?Stereotypes Quebeckers have of English Canadians are also exploited. And, of course, when you throw in a serial murderer whose killings revolve around hockey, you have a film that will appeal to all Canadians and anyone with a passing familiarity with our political and cultural history. A must see.Lastly, Patrick Huard and Colm Feore are great in their roles.

Awesome

It's a buddy cop movie with some distinctly Canadian humour that's all about hockey. So, pretty much the most awesome movie ever made. There's nothing artistic or high-brow about its supposed 'style', and the hockey parodies are really obvious and fairly unfunny, but it's hard to top this kind of sheer outrageous fun nowadays. The banter between the leads is pretty great, and the linguistic comedy is occasionally hilarious. Still, it's rather embarrassing that this is both the highest grossing Canadian movie ever and the winner of the Genie for Best Picture in its year.Actually, thinking about it, it's still better than Titanic. So maybe not that embarrassing.

A good mix of French-Canadian and Anglo-Canadian humor!!!

I'm from Quebec and here, we've been talking about this movie since we first heard about it. What would a movie be like if the main guideline to the movie are the cultural differences between french Canadians from Quebec and the anglophones of Canada, especially the Ontarians. Its hard to understand why this subject could be that great unless you are well aware of the situation or if you live directly in it. Basically, french from Quebec, and English from Ontario kind of...don't like each other. And its not only since the Maple Leafs and The Canadians hockey clubs exist, its from way back...Anyways, the movie itself has great acting from Patrick Huard (The Frenchy in the movie from which the idea of the movie came to) and Colm Feore (The stiff cop from Toronto. As the movie develops itself, these two fellas get in a lot of trouble and trying to work things out through their lack of understanding themselves. A joke doesn't wait another and the twists in the storyline are solid too. And if your a fan of hockey, you'll find the story even more interesting since it is the background of the plot and where team names and people names (The Montreal Patriotes for examples instead of the Montreal Canadians). In all, I think this movie is finally the one and only thing that all politicians in Ottawa wished for...a way to unite Canada and Quebec in a good jolly laugh!!!

gets the sympathy vote for being bilingual

Quebeckers seems to love this movie... I guess because they get the cool guy in the flick.... however the plot, acting and pretty much everything else is third rate. I was expecting a deeper perspective on the whole Quebec/Ontario situation and Canadian culture in general but all you get is over the top stereotypical characters and really lame jokes.Canadians are so desperate for bilingualism and the whole Quebec in Canada thing to succeed they will laud even the most pathetic of movies that has a semblance of us "all just getting along"It seems we're doomed from getting a successful bilingual commercial movie that happens not to suck.

A great fun night of entertainment

One of the best comedies I have seen in a long time ... just couldn't help laughing right out loud throughout the movie. Canadian hockey trivia, a murder, English-Canadian relations, family situations ... everything enhance and nothing detracted from the humor. The casting was perfect with Colm Feore as the stiff-laced Ontario cop and Patrick Huard as his easy going Quebec counterpart. Good spoofs of cop movies with take-offs on car chases, explosions, and Colombo-like cars falling apart. The tough-guy cop even make it to his daughter's ballet recital ... I thought he was going to jump on stage and dance with her. And the take-offs on the NHL ... Mr Buttman was so obvious it was perfect. What an enjoyable evening!

What about the rest of us?

I'm in, ahem, spirited energy land here - I liked it and wish that we could see more of this stuff, instead of so many US imports. Virtually every joke is cheesy and lame but there is always a joke at the expense of another. The acting is perfect for the film and the anal Toronto cop is well played as a stooge to the more gallant Quebecois cop. The plot is diverting enough. It unravels nicely to allow some amusing Hockey jokes, which will obviously have mass appeal across Canada. I'd advise viewers not to leave too quickly as the dream Canadian hockey announcement is made. The premise itself is believable enough not to affect the film. It's just one of those movies that makes you feel pleasantly entertained with a good few laugh aloud jokes.

Bon flique Bad Acting

I didn't expect a lot from the title and I'm quite used to Canadian movies being quite cheesy. The previews looked somewhat generic and really I postponed watching this until it was on DVD and I could survive the potential horror in the comfort of my home with a power of stopping the video. To my surprise, this was not the case at all. Just like The Dark Hours, another great Canadian movie of which I had little to expect, Bon Cop Bad Cop manages to deliver great 2 hours of entertainment. This is not just an enjoyable piece of cinema, but also a very good Canadian movie. There are very few Canadian directors that managed to create something worthy of international audience and Eric Canuel has finally managed to pull it off. Yes, the storyline may sound cheesy to a Canadian like myself, you got too much hockey involved, but it's integral to the stereotype and the fun effect of the movie and especially for international audience. In all honesty, my only disappointment with it was the cheesiness of some very basic scenes, such as family dynamics of both protagonists and characters in their family. They were just too unbelieavable, too soap operish. And some of them were frankly very out of place and could be done without. But other than that, the progression, the action, even camera work were all quite decent. I don't think this movie will be soon forgotten and it might be one of those rare pieces of film that gives Canadian cinema a new birth.9/10, and yes this is a sort of biased score...cause I'm Canadian

Bon film, could be better

I really enjoy the police/action/comedy genre. Bon cop/ Bad cop wants to be a Canadian version of the American "Lethal Weapon", "Die hard" & "Beverly Hills cop". And to a certain degree it succeeds. The makers of this films manage to entertain us with shaper witty lines. The characters are interesting and compelling. The dialogues are hilarious. Action sequences, while fewer and lower budgeted are quite thrilling form the most part. Huard & Feore are just as entertaining to watch as Gibson & Glover (lethal weapon)Wha doesn't work in this film? The plot. It seems to me that the writers knew police work from what they saw in the lethal weapons films. The villain is boring and silly. is it a good film, to some degree yes. Should you see it? Definitively! While it has many faults. It's still an entertaining picture.Since it looks like there will be a sequel. I hope that they either get better writers or at least develop a better plot/villain to foil Bouchard and Ward!

Fantastic!

I loved this movie! It was so unbelievable. Truly Canadian, considering the motives and methods involved. I loved how subtitles were used as part of the story rather than as something necessary for English viewers. the Tattoo bit was my favorite. I'm seeing it for the third time this Thursday. a must-see for all adults! I wouldn't recommend it for children, as there is a lot of swearing and a rather explicit sex scene. But for adults, it is mandatory you go see it! Go see! There's an entire tutorial on French swearing and the use of 'hostis' and what-not. The music is great, and it is filled with humor and witty jokes, and antics you never thought a 'mature' adult could possibly get into. I give it 10 out of 10 stars!

Clichéd but very funny

This is a classic buddy-cop caper movie with a twist: it's entirely bilingual, featuring two leads (Colm Feore and Patrick Huard) who are cops teamed up from opposite sides of the Quebec-Ontario border to solve a murder. As a murder mystery, this movie doesn't really work. The suspense is laughable, the plot about as well strung-together as a paperclip chain, and the twists and turns designed more to bring about laughs than to actually advance the story. The hockey theme, of course, is more an excuse to make fun of people like Don Cherry, Eric Lindros and Gary Bettman than it is an actual plot device. But this movie really gets it right when it comes to exploiting - and making fun of - the Quebec-Ontario cultural divide. Us Montrealers are accustomed to holding bilingual conversations, so a bilingual movie is the next logical step. Every single cliché imaginable finds its way into this one, and the comic timing is perfect. In fact, I was surprised at how much I laughed. The English version of this film saw fit to introduce subtitles to the French portions, which were distracting at first until I realized that they were actually part of the joke. Fast readers will have a good laugh simultaneously listening to the French and reading the translation and comparing the two. Needless to say, they're quite different, but I suspect it was done that way on purpose.Shame that it probably won't find an audience outside Quebec, because you pretty much have to be from here to "get" it. To all Montrealers, do run out and see this film!

Love, love, love!

Loved this movie! However, I am looking for the "bloopers" list and realizing no one had commented on this, or if they did I can't find it. A small blooper but an obvious one: In the scene where Colm and Patrick are arguing about who's case this will be, Ontario's or Quebec's, and the dead guy is hanging from the billboard. The actors make a few references to how the body is hanging. Both Patrick and Colm say the feet are in Ontario and the head is in Quebec. If you check you will see the reverse is actually true and the feet are in Quebec with the head being in Ontario. Like I said, a small thing -- and it won't distract you from a genuinely funny Canadian movie!

Really good !

I've seen it yesterday and it is very good! I'm french, so I've seen it in french, but I'll probably go see it in English too, because although I watched it in french, there's a lot of English parts (subtitled) so I guess the English version will also be subtitled for the french parts. It not hard to understand, it's completely hilarious, but there's also a very good story and I honestly suggest it to anyone (exept young children, there's a lot of swearing (haha) in both languages! ) The movie is not too long, it lasts about two hours but I never felt tired of any part. It talks a lot about hockey, our national sport, but the story is not all about it, which allows the less-informed viewers to understand easily (There are some inside jokes with our hockey reality, but only a few). Seriously, I laughed, I got scared, I jumped, I laughed again, and I simply loved this movie which I recommend to you all.

Shamelessly uses every cliché in the book and yet it works - strangely enough

Imagine this scenario: an English Canadian movie producer, impressed by the strong box office showings of Quebec films like C.R.A.Z.Y., decides to see if he can develop a cross-over product that will appeal not only to Quebecois film goers, but popcorn munchers from the ROC (Rest of Canada) as well. So, with this in mind, he enlists the talent of one of Quebec's hottest leading men and begins to brainstorm how to find the winning formula.Clearly it must contain copious cultural references that bridge the language divide….. hockey! That's the ticket! Swearing; yeah, we'll add that too. But not just run of the mill English cusses; this movie must have French ones because, well, French swearing is funny. You know where all this would fit in well? A buddy cop movie! Yeah, we can't miss with that formula. And so, the blender is set to high and the ingredients poured in. The end result is Bon Cop, Bad Cop, and in spite of all its clichés, stereotypes, telegraphed scenes and flimsy excuse for a plot, the film works on some base level that defies logic.Starring the Shakespearean stage actor Colm Feore and Quebec star Patrick Huard as a quarreling Canuck version of Lethal Weapon's Riggs and Murtaugh, Bon Cop, Bad Cop throws virtually every hoary cliché imaginable at the theater screen. A victim is found dead straddling the Quebec/Ontario border sign, victims are killed with hockey sticks and skates to the head by a villain who wears goalie masks and dresses up as a beaver mascot. I swear the DVD extras will no doubt feature a poutine food fight that didn't make it into the final cut. If it doesn't, I bet producer Kevin Tierney is kicking himself reading this: "Jeeze! I didn't make a poutine reference! Damn!" In fact, I can count the number of clichés on one hand that DIDN'T make it into this movie.I know I sound appalled by all this, but strangely, I left the theater having had a few (albeit guilty) chuckles, and a fairly good time. Huard and Feore actually work well together, and while I would have liked to see more attention paid to the plot, the overall formula (and make no mistake about it, this movie is ENTIRELY formula) works. In fact, I actually expect to see this movie spawn a sequel, irregardless of whether or not the film is able to hold its own at English Canada's box offices. Quebecers appear to love this movie. The screening I attended (at an English theater in Montreal) was packed like few Hollywood movies are able to these days. In this respect, I think the folks behind this movie have shown they're smart as foxes, knowing Quebec box office receipts should return a decent profit on their investment. If English Canada laps it up, it's just so much gravy on the poutine (hey, if they can use the clichés, so can I).Note to everyone involved: if you plan giving this formula a kick at the sequel can, tone down the over-the-top aspects of the cultural and thematic stereotypes, give Huard and Feore a truly decent mystery to solve, and build on their newfound partnership instead of having them bicker over trivialities like who's going to speak what language where. If you do this you may actually have a franchise on your hands. Just one more thing, if you decide to bring back Rick Mercer, make sure Huard does the audience a favor and have him put a bullet though his head.

A Great Comedy For The Summer

Quebec, Ontario, the war has waged so many times the french vs the English. Well in this movie they bring two provinces and languages together. Colm Feore plays Detective Ward and Patric Huard plays Detective Bouchard, When a murder happens and the body is laid over the border of Quebec and Ontario it brings these two Cops together to try and solve the crime of who did it. Only problem is they both hate each other and hate the company along with it. The premise a very simple one to follow. People in the "Hockey Laugue" who have sold out the Canadian teams to an American buyer have basically angered some people who are now killing these people, and Tattooing them as a kind of symbol. The move is set mainly in Montreal and some times in Toronto to put both our Detectives together. Many of the laughs are between Ward and Bouchard, as one who speaks french obviously and the other English. One of my favorite Parts is when Bouchard first meets Detective Ward in the Montreal office, and Boucahrds boss try's speaking french. The conversation itself in that room was worth my ten bucks alone. It's been a while since i've laughed out loud and even teared in a movie so funny.Though the movie whilst being funny with the right amount of action inside, has it's own set of problems. One of my main gripes were that the killer, he didn't seem like to much a bad guy, though makes you believe that there's a mystery killer, but in the end it's nothing really special just some kid out for revenge against the Hockey League, When you see him, you'll probably say to yourself quietly "that's the bad guy?" He looks wimpy and will probably remind people of some Star Trek Nerd at a convention. Another gripe i had with the film was the family aspect of the film, Mainly on Wards(Feore) side. We don't really find out why his son really dislikes him, or doesn't talk to him a lot. Also both cops fall in love with each others family Member, Ward falls in love with Bouchards ex-Wife, And Bouchard with Wards Sister, but in the end it's not really solved and we don't really find out if they'll be together in the end. Maybe quite possibly a sequel in the works. Those Minor Gripes aside the movie has the right amount of comedy and action put together. Even one of the bad guys has a funny moment taken from a classic film in the most obscure way ever! Also when the two Detectives argue it makes for some great highlights in the film. Some people may not get the jokes inside, a lot of them are "Quebec Based" if that makes any sense, so sometimes the audience may laugh but kind of think to themselves whether they got the joke or not. Other then that The movie is probably one of the best i've seen this summer. It was more then enjoyable and very funny. In my opinion it's one movie you got to see and check out for yourself to see whether it's funny or not, or if the movies for you. It was the best 10 bucks i have spent on a movie in a while though. So for a great Action/Comedy/Buddy Cop movie Bon Cop Bad Cop is a great choice overall, and highly recommended 8.5/10

This is an awesome movie, for friends on a Friday Night.Sumary-(Spoiler) Quebec hates Ontario, and yet they have to share a border, whether they like it or not..and just their luck, someone was found dead right there, his head in Quebec. David Bouchard (Pratick Huard) and Martin Ward (Colm Feore) were the lucky ones picked to be partner. As the investigation goes, the two get in a lot of trouble, but at the same time, they get to like each other, as friends. They meet the others families, Martin charms with the other's ex-wife, and David flirts with Martin's sister. The crime could not be more Canadianer, unhappy that the hockey teams are being sold to the U.S, "Tatoo Killer" kidnaps his victims, makes them a tattoo that gives a clue and leaves them to make a trail. Could this be the end to Quebec-Ontario hatred? No.Thow being a very traditional story, someone does something bad on purpose and then the cop catches them and the thief is trapped, the movie adds a twist, a very funny twist.

Terrific Fun!!!

Saw it this evening at a special screening at the Denver Film Festival. (It quickly became obvious why Denver was picked for the US premier). My wife and I thought it was terrific and hysterically funny. While the plot points do get a little loose and some of the really 'inside' references might fall flat for many Americans (surprising few will 'get' the spoofing of Bettman et. al.), the chemistry is great and the humor authentic (and often very dark)...but I needed to be neither Ontarian nor Quebecoise to enjoy immensely. And as the director told our most appreciative audience, this is a "popcorn movie" and not intended to be more than that. Looking for thought provoking depth and moralizing? This isn't your flick. And it is almost as much Pulp Fiction in its audacity as it is Lethal Weapon in its formula. And am I correct in assuming that was THE Patrick Roy listed as an EP?
