Great horror classics!

posted on 02 Aug 2009

If you love horror movies, or like thrills, you must check this out! It's a highlight of 17 modern horror classics from Jason Vorhees all the way to the more recent Simon from the movie "The Ugly". Also on the video are little tidbits of info regarding the movie. The dvd is worth the extra $$...on it, you can play an interactive game on naming scenes from movies, watch movie trailers, & more. It's alot of fun!

an incomplete analysis of the horror boogeyman genre

posted on 19 Jul 2009

I was actually quite pleased to receive this DVD for Christmas. I had seen this one in the store and had desired to purchase it but for one reason or another passed on it. And to be quite honest I am glad I didn't pay for this myself. As much of a horror fan that I am, I was pleased with some of the elements of this compilation but on the whole I would have to say that there are more disappointments that triumphs in this project. The DVD includes some excellent features such as Robert Englund providing some very insightful commentary concerning behind the scenes production notes. One rather interesting tidbit that I learned was upside down set that was manufactured for the famous scene in Nightmare On Elm Street where Rod watches Freddy slice Tina open and she is dragged to the ceiling and then dropped( the same effect was used when Glen was pulled down into his bed and blood sprays onto the ceiling. This is told to us by Wes Craven in the Nightmare On Elm Street Platinum series on DVD, an excellent purchase), spraying blood all over Rod. Another interesting and informative piece was when Englund began explaining the problems that Freddy VS. Jason was having coming to fruition. So I guess what it comes down to is that if you have seen the DVD version of this, then it is somewhat worth the money that you are spending. But the VHS version does not contain Englund's commentary nor does it have some of the other extras. Therefore it may not be worth buying. Other problems I have with the compilation is some of the clips they chose. While there are excellent scenes involving Pinhead and Andy Robinson from Hellraiser, Leatherface and Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Englund's own Nightmare On Elm Street and even some of Carpenter's Halloween, the video really drops the ball on films like Friday the 13th and Scream. I could think of perhaps 2 dozen scenes from the first four Fridays that were more worthy that the one they chose from the Final Friday, Jason Goes To Hell. For example, how about Teddy getting nailed with a corkscrew in the hand and then a machete to the face in the Final Chapter? Or how about again in the Final Chapter when Tommy ( and a huge assist to Rick Baker and Tom Savini ) whacks Jason with a machete to the side of the head and he falls face first into that machete, destroying his mug for future sequels? There is also the guy walking on his hands in part Three, the harpoon to the eye in part Three, hangings in part Two and of course the Mrs. Voorhees beheading in Part One.
There was all of these pernicious and fatal acts to choose from and they chose what they did from the last and perhaps worst Friday? They didn't even show Jason dying. And that is a shame. As for some of the other films, I wouldn't go so far as to say that I Know.... and The Leprechaun and Candyman should be included in this compilation. How about An American Werewolf In London, or some of the other classic cheese films from the 70's and 80's like The Beast Within, Last House on the Left, The Mutilator, The Prey or The Town That Dreaded Sundown. All of these films offered some realistic and disgusting gore and yet they were ignored.
Why?Boogeymen is a treat to watch for some of the insight offered by Englund and because of some of the scenes for some of the movies, but on a whole it is quite a disappointment. And that is frustrating because there is a plethora of clips they could have included.6 out of 10

The Ultimate Horror Fans Dream...

Well this is my second review on this title, my first complimented the VHS version of Boogeymen. This review is for the DVD version. This is twice as good as the VHS version with great extras such as Commentary by Robert England better known to horror fans as Freddy Krueger. Even more Flix Facts and theatrical trailers. This DVD even includes a fun screen shot trivia game, where you identify the scene with its movie. It also has theatrical trailers for upcoming(they-re already released now) movies. If you want to see my original review my old screen name was ERIC(MOVIEFAN) in the user customer review section.

"Boogeymen" was average at best. While the compilation does have greats like Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, Leatherface, and Ghostface, it also features jokes like the Dentist, the Leprechaun, the Fisherman, and Camilla. "The Guardian" flat-out sucks!I also thought that Hannibal from the "Silence of the Lambs" was supposed to be on the DVD. What happened? The compilation is incomplete. They should have had a bio, a trailor, and three scenes for each "Boogeyman.""Boogeymen" had potential, but it certainly didn't live up to it. It receives ** out of ****.

Okay But Not Sure If It's Worth The Money I Paid For It

Boogeymen:The Killer Compilation released by FlixMix cost me £17.99 (UK Sterling) and t be honest, it did seem a little steep for what I got out of it. Given the choice, I would have rented it rather than buy it. I wasn't sure how to comment on this DVD-on one hand it is good, on the other hand it isn't.First, let's look at the bad stuff. For starters, 58 minutes for the main feature is far too short. I understand (although I don't know if it is true) that the people behind this DVD think 58 minutes is the right length given that the demographic they are aiming for have short attention spans. I certainly don't have a short attention span-two hours would have been fine for me.Another thing that seemed odd was the choice of clips. Obviously, boogeymen such as Pinhead, Michael Myers and Freddy Krueger deserve a spot on this DVD because they have carved out their own niche and are among the scariest screen monsters around. However, featuring villains such as Simon from The Ugly (a film I have not seen) and the leprachaun didn't seem right. I certainly wouldn't list them as boogeymen. Two more complaints-there were no theatrical trailers for some of the screen monsters which was disappointing. I also disagree with the clip from Jason Goes To Hell. They ended the clip just before the point where Jason is blown to bits by FBI agents-however, I suppose the point is to whet you appetite for the main features. On the plus side, there was an audio commentary by Robert Englund who told some interesting stories and gave us some insight into the special effects used on A Nightmare On Elm Street Part 1. There were also loads of fun facts on the screen when you click on the relevant DVD options. For example, did you know Freddy Krueger was the name of a boy who bullied Wes Craven at school? That is just one of the many facts at your disposal.Add to that a Name That Frame game and written biographies of the characters and you have a DVD that is decent enough although not worth the money I paid. I suppose a Boogeymen 2 is inevitable. I appreciate the thought put into this release and the legal minefield that obviously ensued in obtaining these clips but a bit more thought is needed for any future FlixMix releases.

17 of the best...

This movie is a MUST HAVE for any horror fan. It takes us on a trip to watcvh the 17 best scenes from the 17 best boogeymen, including an Easter Egg featuring Jack Frost. So, why were these boogeymen picked?Every one has a reason, I suppose. But, what about Hannibal? or that creepy girl from the Ring? or the Creeper? All three of those should be in Boogeymen 2. As a matter of fact, some of the new Boogeymen are from films lke the Ring that weren't released yet.So... What are the biggest questions on this film?Q: Why was Jason Goes to Hell the Jason selection? A: Simple. It showed you Jason. I don't believe every Friday the 13th movie does that until the end, does it? Well, yes, there were a million better Friday scenes, but, on the other hand, it showed Jason in his present form.Q: Why wasn't the Exorcist on there? Or the Shining? A: Boogeymen. Not Scary Movies. There is no Boogeymen in the Exorcist, is there? And the Shining? Maybe with a sequel. Or a suitable kill scene. There are neither. Maybe... Boogeymen 2 for the Shining, but leave the Exorcist out.Q: Why wasn't Hannibal on there? Or the Creeper? A: Although this may appear to be basically the same question as the one above, it is not. Both of these boogeymen deserve to be on Boogeymen, and maybe they'll be on B2.Q: Why was Jack Frost an Easter Egg? A: Why was he even on there? Personally, I'd prefer The Creeper, but he's an Easter Egg probably because of the nudity? I can't really answer that.Q: What is The Ugly? A: It's a bit of a Foreign film, but before you scoff, it is really a good movie, even if Hannibal deserved that spot more. I'd reccomend renting it, because it will remind some viewers of Hitchcock type Psychological thrillers. Not a bad movie.Q: Has Boogeymen 2 been announced? A: Not that I know of, but it did say "Vol. 1" On the side, didn't it. Go ahead, pick up your copy, look at the side- ah! NOW you see!Q: What can we expect from Boogeymen 2? A: I have no clue. Either it will be just new scenes from the previous Boogeymen, All new Boogeymen, or a mix of both. We could see Jeepers Creepers, Hannibal, or Children of the Corn. I'd say all are a possibility.Q: How much does this movie go for? A: It's 20 bucks on DVD. And buy it on DVD. There's a plethora of special features that you don't want to miss. I don't know about VHS.Q: Camilla? What's she doing here? A: I don't know. The movie wasn't all that great, and there's not even a sequel for it. The Ugly doesn't have one either, but it's really a good movie. I'd say it's there because it's the only Boogeywoman (cough Ring cough) that was out at the time. Note: The Ring wasn't out at the time.

Really cool!

At only an hour, this isn't the best compilation DVD they could possibly come up with, but I liked it a lot. I've been a little out of touch with horror movies recently, so it was nice to watch clips from all these famous horror movies to get me back on the ball. There are some very gruesome clips, some are downright sickening, but that's the fun of it. I loved the Robert Englund commentary--he had some very interesting things to say, and seemed to be at least somewhat oriented with every horror director, writer and actor featured. Plus, he has a fine sense of humor. The easter egg was really nice. I haven't seen "Jack Frost," and am only familiar with it through the trailer. It seems like a really cheesy flick, but boy does that babe look great naked. You can't have a cheesy horror flick without a lil' bit of gratuitous nudity, that's my motto. My impression after the clips were over was, "That's it?" But hopefully, they'll sooner or later come up with a "Boogeymen 2" DVD. If they do, I really look forward to it. And I love the song "I'm Your Boogeyman" by Rob Zombie (back then, White Zombie), which was featured in the opening and closing credits. Horror fans will probably love it. Others will be genuinely disgusted and will probably wanna stay away. Not for the squeamish or faint of heart. My score: 7 (out of 10)

A Trip To Hell And Back!!!

This compilation is a must have for any horror fan, young or old. Whoever selected which were the best scenes did a terrific job. The facts are extremely interesting. Who knew 20 seconds of footage could make a different in a rating puzzled me? The only disappointment they did not show the trailer to every boogeymen's scenes. Another cool thing is a brief biography of each boogeymen before their scene. My score **** out of *****.

Simply the Best

Simply the Best Movie ever to be put on DVD. It had all of my Favorite Films on It. The is A BIG Must Have For ALL Horror DVD Collections. I Really Enjoyed the "Name that Frame Game". It also Showed me a Few Films that i Had Never Seen Before, and Decided to look into. Reccommmended for all horror fans.

Just in case you didn't notice...

While watching the end credits on the DVD, you'll notice the credits for Jack Frost 2. From the disc's main menu, go to 'Flixmix Recommendations.' On this screen you see menu entries for trailers for 'American Pie 2' and 'The Mummy Returns.' If you press the 'Right' arrow key on your remote control however, an icon appears, and if you hit 'Enter' now, you will get the chance to see a clip from 'Jack Frost 2: Revenge of the Mutant Killer Snowman,'. A must see!As far as Boogeymen is concerned, being a 20 year plus horror fan I was a bit let down by the compilation. Flixmix boasts "Nothing but the good stuff!", but one could debate that after seeing the selections of not only some of the films, but some of the clips they chose from the film. Most of the time, they didn't include the classic scenes from the films, just secondary scenes. Nothing but the good stuff...whatever. It's not a bad disc if you a throwing a Halloween party and want a video mix, otherwise it'll be on your coffee table as a coaster within months. The Flixmix animated trivia is often incorrect, and the commentary by Rober Englund (who I love) is dull and uninspiring. The DVD-Rom features are hardly anything to write home about, but none really ever are. Other than that, you get some selected trailers, a lame Name That Frame game, and Legends Of The Boogeymen text (also filled with mistakes). A great concept fell short. Not for the hardcore horror fans, as we've seen this all before ... but with the good stuff!

Mediocre

mediocre flick is fairly well done but the choices were questionable and i already know tons about the horror genre being a huge horror fan like myself it was fun to see them make a movie about all the legends it's just it's no better then average ** out of 5

Mixed bags of goods

This compilation of horror movies had pro and cons. The video had some excellent trailers and clips from Hellraiser, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween, Psycho, Nightmare on Elm Street, The Dentist(more comedic than horror, yet had excellent scenes) and an unknown horror movie called the Ugly. I was very disappointed in the inclusion of Leprauchan, Child's Play 2, and Friday the 13th:Jason goes to Hell. They should have included a scene from an earlier Friday flick. They also did not show all trailers for all the movies shown(most notably NOES, and Psycho). Also missing was Night of the Living Dead, the Shining, and the Exorcist. I did like that they previewed some lesser known horror movies, that looked really good, however I have some doubts to put those in a 'best of horror compilation'.

Just plain bad.

First, don't waste your money on buying this. Don't even rent it unless you absolutely feel you have to see it. And even then you should invite all of your friends over so you don't all have to waste money. This movie wasn't terrible, as some of the movie clips were entertaining, but it was very bad. The only movies it made me want to see were those I had already seen. Also, it leaves out some of the best "boogeymen" of all time - notably The Shining's 'Jack' and Linda Blair's character from the Exorcist (both movies, ironically, are listed in the top five horror movies of all time ON THIS VERY DVD!). Use the back of this movie's box to get a fair list of good horror movies, then go rent those movies. That's the best use for this movie that I can think of.

Good - but know what you're getting before you buy

I am an avid horror fan and have always had a fascination with those creatures from the dark that used to deprive me of sleep when I was just a wee tot. Thus it was with great anticipation that I pre-ordered this DVD and my mind reeled with the possibilities of how cool this DVD could be. The verdict: Boogeymen delivers - sort of.My biggest complaint has to be the length of the feature. 58 minutes. To me that's hardly enough time to do justice to 17 different characters (just over 3 minutes per). And why is it that each character has to be given only one scene. Don't get me wrong, I love cheesy horror movies and cartoonish monsters, but had they given some of the more prolific characters (Freddy, Jason, Pinhead, Leatherface, etc) 2-3 scenes and 6-8 minutes each and cut down some of the filler (Leprechaun, the Ugly, the Dentist) to 2 minutes or so, you'd have had a nice 100-110 minute feature that would have hit on all cylinders. Another small gripe - none of the scenes are widescreen. Also, the atmosphere just didn't do it for me. The scenes are broken up by loud, grungy metal guitar and there's a 3-sentence synopsis of each boogeyman. I think it would have been much better to just have a simple title of the character with soft eerie music in the background (perhaps Tubular Bells). Along those lines, noticeably absent is The Exorcist, Last House on the Left, The Omen, the Evil Dead series, and the Night of the Living Dead series. I realize that they wanted really specific, identifiable boogeymen but come one, who wouldn't rather see the zombies from Dawn of the Dead, or Ash's hand from Evil Dead II instead of The Guardian and The Dentist?I don't want to give the impression that there isn't much here to enjoy, there is. Robert Englund's commentary is first rate fun (it's particularly gratifying to hear him cringe during a scene from The Dentist). And a lot of the extras are quite entertaining. Still, I was hoping for a DVD that I could throw on every few months or so when I got the horror bug and there were no decent flicks in theatres. So far I've watched it twice (once with the commentary, once without) and I don't see myself watching it more than another 1-2 times in my life. Also, I will echo the sentiments of other comments, this is flick for those that have seen most of these films, as some of the endings are given away. While showing Warwick Davis pogo-sticking a guy to death may not be much of a reveal, showing the end of Texas Chainsaw certainly is.Bottom line: Lots of fun with a fair share of camp, but not as good as it could have been, so rent it first.

Murderous fun

When I first heart about the 'Boogeymen' disc, I thought it was a great idea that could not be done right. The types of things I, as a horror fan, would want to see on this disc would just be too extreme for the general public.Upon watching it, though, I realized that it's not all about gore and death, this disc does a great job making the scenes chosen as interesting as possible. With all the extra features like FlixFax (a scrolling bar at the bottom with cool factoids), interactive games, commentary by Robert Englund, and special DVD-ROM stuff, 'Boogeymen' is worth a look. The actual running time of all the clips together is just over an hour, but with all the extras you could get the advertised three, I'm sure. A cool disc for parties and horrific gatherings of all sorts.

Well-made compilation

Boogeymen: The Killer Compilation (2001) C-56 min. Well-made compilation of some of the most frightening movie slashers of our time. From Michael Myers, Jason Vorhees, and Freddy Krueger to Pinhead, Chucky, and Leatherface, this serves as a supplement to any horror/slasher fan's video collection. Unfortunately, some of the scenes they chose were not the best (there were far bloodier and scarier scenes in the Friday the 13th series than the one they chose from JASON GOES TO HELL) and they left out a few of the classic slashers (Santa Claus killer from SILENT NIGHT DEADLY NIGHT, Jack Frost, the Thomas Sinclair/Bryan Lawson brother/killer duo from the GLENVILLE films, the URBAN LEGEND killers, etc). But the `film' is more than adequate and provided me with a list of horror movies on my `must-see' list. Commentary on the DVD edition is done by none other than Robert Englund. RATING: 6 out of 10.

It was meant as a gift to horror fans, but wasn't that good

posted on 30 Oct 2007

I mean, over all, they really can't go wrong with some of the classic horror movies: Halloween, Hellraiser, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Psycho. But they didn't show the best clips and some movies, you were either "I didn't see that" or "Huh, why did they put that in there?" They also missed some great classic horror movies, such as Jaws, The Exorcist, and Silence of the Lambs. I know that those aren't considered in some ways to be Boogeymen, but I think this was more of a tribute to horror movies. Also, they showed the worst clip of the Friday the 13th series, I thought they should have shown the 6th one where Jason slams the person in a sleeping bag against a tree, that was classic and terrifying. This wasn't too bad, but I mean, who really had heard of "The Guardian", "The Ugly", and not too many knew about "The Dentist". If you want to see this, I'd recommend the DVD, it has great commentary by Freddy Krueger, or as true horror fans know him as Robert Englund. It has trivia and trailers, and is must see for horror fans.6/10

high potential

posted on 15 Aug 2007

I was very excited when this came out and could not wait to get my hands on it. But it left me hanging. It seemed like i was watching nominations for the MTV Movie Awards. The name of the character and film were announced and the scene was presented. It contained some very good scenes and provided a platform for some people to discover new horror movies that they may not have seen, but sometimes i was left wondering why certain scenes had been chosen. If you see this movie see it on DVD because the Robert Englund commentary makes up for alot of what is lacking and his excitement about some of these films is intense. The vhs i can imagine would be pretty disappointing for your money, but the dvd has enough treats to at least make it feel like a movie experience. I personally would have preferred a documentary format of some sort with interviews and commentary by actors or directors of their own work, but hey, there will probably be Boogeymen 2, and as I said there is high potential.
