Some Thing Has Found Us
Cloverfield follows five New Yorkers from the perspective of a hand-held video camera. The movie is exactly the length of a DV Tape and a sub-plot is established by showing bits and pieces of video previously recorded on the tape that is being recorded over. The movie starts as a monster of unknown origin destroys a building. As they go to investigate, parts of the building and the head of the Statue of Liberty come raining down. The movie follows their adventure trying to escape and save a friend, a love interest of the main character.

One of the best movies I've seen
posted on 30 Aug 2009Filmed on a hand-held camera by a 'drunk Joe Cocker having a seizure' who runs a LOT, this movie is not for those who get motion sickness.Just as I suspected, this movie is rated by most people as > 7 or < 4. It is definitely a movie you will either love or hate. The shaky cam is over-used, but when you think about it, they ARE being chased by a big *something*.As for the commenters talking about everyone in the movie being "self-absorbed"....uh, hello? What do you expect? They are a bunch of yuppies in NY running for their lives...I might be a little self-absorbed, too.Excellent action. Excellent effects. I happen to appreciate the open-endedness of the movie; I think it adds to the realism. And anyone who goes to see a movie you can't tell much about from the trailers and doesn't check out the directing/producing style of the creators is asking to be disappointed anyway. This movie has J. J. Abrams written all over it.I would love to see this in the theater again...and hopefully sitting back further than the 3rd row next time to ease the motion sickness effect. (Our theater was sold out for the 7:20 and 9 PM showings and our 9:40 showing was packed.)
Lives up to the hype
posted on 30 Aug 2009Going into the movie, I didn't know to much about it. But when the movie first started I thought to myself this is probably gonna suck, and I thought I was right. But as the movie progressed and picked up pace I found myself at the edge of my seat and constantly wondering what was gonna happen next. The Effects were magnificent, and story was great. The best thing about the movie turned out to be the worse thing for my stomach and my head, as you will come to find out if you decided to watch it, is the camera styling of the movie is refreshing, and brings the whole experience alive making it just that more epic. But it did leave me very queasy and with quite a headache cause I get motion sick very easy, but it was well worth it, and I would gladly do it all over again. For the first time in along time, I can honestly say the movie was well worth the 6.50 So if you haven't seen it you should cause its diffidently a movie a thousand times more amazing on the big screen.
Let's be honest - entertaining, not plausible
posted on 30 Aug 2009I decided to write this a full 24 hours after watching the film because it usually takes me that long to come to a critical decision. If I had written this immediately after viewing the film, I would have written that it was a great movie. I never once was bored, the explosions were nice, I was satisfied because I got to see the monster and I was even more satisfied that the film never told where the monster came from. I do think audiences are sometimes better off using their imaginations because nothing is ever as creative or terrible than something you make up for yourself. People leaving the theater were complaining because they felt they hadn't been told enough. Not me - I had fun. I expected total trash. Maybe the fact that it was so much better than I anticipated lead me to overrate the film.Yes, I was never scared. It was action-filled, but predictably so. I knew the bridge would be torn down. I told my husband that as soon as they directed everyone to the bridge. I knew they would see rats running in the tunnel and why as soon as they went into the subway. This film is not a horror film. It is an action film. At least, I do not think the intention was to scare the audience, but rather, keep them involved in the action. Predictablity is par for the course in action films. However, I was disappointed that the film was not more realistic in some ways. I fully expected that girl to change her shoes in the department store - I would have. It would have taken the military longer to get there. I am no expert on weapons, but the monster looked soft-skinned, still, nothing hurt it. Come on, I don't believe it. A more realistic situation would be trying to escape while waiting for the military to get there with tanks and whatever else. But other things were unrealistic as well. The three people who survived the copter crash weren't strapped in as far as I could tell. If the camera's auto focus had problems in one part, why not in any other part? But, hey this camera did much that mine won't. I don't think mine would have made it after falling from the monster's mouth, let alone the crash or even some of the falls. I didn't mind the camera jumping, but the little break-ins from what was supposed to originally be on the tape were overused. Finally, the whole "Hold on to someone you love. That's what's important - love" stuff is a little too obvious. Other movies have made far more serious statements about society in far less obvious ways. Like Romero or Takashi Miike (spelling?).I enjoyed myself. It wasn't a bad movie, but it wasn't "groundbreaking" or "unique." I certainly did not "make my entire life" as some have claimed here. I am glad I was talked into seeing it.
Cloverfield...need I say more?
posted on 30 Aug 2009Unlike most, I had done absolutely no research whatsoever when the virals started coming out, and I didn't plan to look into it. I went to it opening day, and I must admit that...Cloverfield has changed the face of monster-movies. Everyone knows the plot, so I'm not going to explain things that have already been said. I will say, though, that it by far exceeds expectations. Yes, the camera is shaky, especially during the Underground Subway scene, but the shakiness only adds to the effect. To those who feel the camera was a crapout, they don't understand the aesthetics of the movie. Put in a nutshell: we see only what the camera sees. The back story on the monster is purposely left out to create the hopeless illusion. Without knowing the monster's weakness and where it came from (possibly Japan), all reassurance is lost. The movie is a roller-coaster all the way through, until the very end, when we finally get up close and VERY personal to the creature...and watch poor Hud die.
You will never look at New York City the same again
posted on 30 Aug 2009You will never look at New York City the same again. I felt like i was actually there with the cast as this was happening, without the hand-held camera style of filming this movie would have sucked. Probably the greatest monster movie I've ever seen. The monster was very....odd and if you ever go back to see it a second time, try to look in the background, you'll begin to see stuff that you didn't notice before. All in all it was one of the best movies of the year and i have one more line to write on so I'm just going to type random words that have to do with the movie. cool awesome monster big scary intense creepy camera bridge little insect things rockets bombs military shooting cell phone last statements
I couldn't stop thinking about how silly this film was
posted on 30 Aug 2009While the tilt-a-whirl camera style didn't make me nauseous, the fact that a friend paid for the two of us to see this film nearly did. If it wasn't for the last five minutes or so (which were wonderful to me) I would have gotten no real enjoyment out of watching Cloverfield. People walking out of the theater commented on how 'real' it felt. All I could think and say in reply was 'Oh, Please!' If this film was intended to excite, it failed in my case. It seemed ludicrous to me and had me checking my watch often. I can suspend my disbelief on the thinnest of threads, but Cloverfield turned that thread into a gnarled and tangled ball. Who in their right mind would carry, much less continue to operate, a camcorder while some gargantuan creature is tearing up the city? Danger is in X direction and safety might be in Y direction. I don't know very many twenty-something party-goers who would trot off in direction X unless they'd either had far too much to drink at the party or had just been dumped by their significant others and wanted to take a ride on the suicide express.
Is that what I think it is?
posted on 30 Aug 2009o.k. guys , I know what I saw and it was a terrible monster. What the heck were they thinking. The film is interesting and I would like to have seen that American version of Godzilla in similar style. This monster is repulsive penis monster? Freakin big ol penis, complete with nut sack and crabs?!? So evident in the aerial shot some dude doing the crab walk through New York, waving his VD infested penis about, peppering the city with crabs.. esh!! I was so offended I had to pay for the torture twice, Haa Haa Haa Haa. Regarding the end, well it's better then expected. Then at the very end it sounds like to guy says they all have it? They all got it?...Some obscure reference to his VD or crabs... So what happened to the creative talents of Rob Bottin, Carl Fullerton? Phil's talents are superb but why the penis? Whynot giant squid with a whale tail or something invisible?..Crabs? Well good luck at the awards shows..
Waste of time
posted on 30 Aug 2009I never though I could spend some time to review I film I disliked; done now. The main thing is: this movie is boring. Not surprising, not fun, nothing special. Nothing new since "Cannibal Holocaust", "The Blair Witch Project" (and many much more I guess)! Is it supposed to be realistic? The only thing that could have made that movie interesting is if it had actually happened! I've sent most of the time hopping "something" would happen but noting came out... the "first part" being nearly useless. In the end I think the trailer was way better than the actual film. Hopefully the film isn't much long (80 mins) and you can forget it right after.
Godzilla goes Blair Witch with an excellent outcome
posted on 30 Aug 2009The movie Cloverfield experienced a big hype almost as big as Snakes On A Plane. It is the best monster movie of the century. The shaky hand cam combined with the monster elements makes it ,In my opinion, also the best movie all categories this century. It is indeed a must see movie but you have to see it on the silver screen otherwise it's not the same experience. To feel every footstep the monster take is a well paid experience. The movie starts a bit slow and nothing special happens until there is a large earthquake followed by a big explosion in the other side of the city. The lead characters try to flee Manhattan using the Brooklyn bridge only to be stopped by the mysterious monster, crushing the bridge. From there it's a thrill ride which won't stop until the end credits is shown. The producer is non other than the creator of Alias and Lost, J.J Abrams, and sometimes you can see similarities between these production.I will be greatly disappointed if this movie doesn't get a follow up. If this type of monster movie doesn't suit you, try watch the Korean movie "The Host".
Feel it's might
posted on 30 Aug 2009The first thing i saw of Cloverfield was back on July 3rd, 2007. Me and my friend had met at our city's cinemas to see Transformers. The movie was great, and it had two trailers that greatly intrigued me. The first was I Am Legend (The Last man on Earth is not Alone), scared me. Definitely intrigued. I also saw the trailer for Cloverfield. Didn't know what was happening, just that there was a massive explosion, and then the head of the statue of Liberty came flying into the street, someone was screaming OMG, then, that was it. All we knew was that it was from J.J. Abrams, and that it would be coming out on 1/18/08. that was enough to get me intrigued. I couldn't stop thinking about it, and as the month's passed i got more and more excited for the 18th of January, 2008. When the day finally came, i saw it right after school. Never have i been more satisfied with a movie. It was laugh out loud funny at the right parts, had great characters, and was just as thrilling and scary and captivating as i had expected it to be. I have never been under more adrenaline in a movie theater in my life. I was even flexing my muscles during scenes without even realizing it. The movie was incredible in that it was actually able to live up to one of the biggest amounts of hype ever. I would see it five time in theaters. By the fourth and fifth time however, i was starting to get bored. understandably. That's the one problem with Cloverfield. I have realized that since it relied so much on suspense and shock, instead of eye candy, that after the first couple of times, you don't really get as much pleasure out of the movie. I know its kind of hard to judge based on my four consecutive seeings, but i think that even with DVD it still could be boring, although i haven't bought it yet. It's still fun to watch, because its so good, but i think the reason it wasn't the super blockbuster it could have been was because it didn't show enough scenes of buildings being demolished, or helicopters exploding. Still, the Cloverfield Monster was incredible, and you can't help but feel awed by it. The movie is good because it isn't scary primarily because of the little parasites, but because of the skyscraper sized carnivore. It is actually able to make something so fantastic, impossible, and big, scary, and an abandoned New York is the slaughter range. After seeing that thing, it is actually a little scary to walk at night, for fear it might appear. Because Cloverfield could capture that crucial and classic aspect of the monster movie genre, it is, i think, one of, if not the, greatest monster movies of all time. Go see the movie, and feel the might of the Cloverfield Monster.*I am going to go see the sequel. Cloverfield, 2009!
Was I the only one who saw the monster?
posted on 30 Aug 2009I liked Cloverfield. The first-person camera did make me queasy for a bit, but the film was still enjoyable. My only problem with it was that there was so much more detail that could have been explored that wasn't, such as what happens when someone is bitten. That is one of the limitations of the first-person aspect. It also seemed to set up very well for a sequel, but hey. Gives you something else to do on weekends. 8/10 only because I wanted more information. Up from a 7.5 because the monster was more awesome than the main characters. Speaking of the monster, all the reviews I have read say that they wanted more monster. What?MAJOR SPOILER:Was I the only one in the theater who saw the monster? At the end, when Hud fell down and was looking right at the thing, dead on, close up? It took up the whole screen, for Pete's sake! How much more monster do you want?
Crummy movie makes your eyes bleed.
posted on 30 Aug 2009This complete piece of junk hurts. Their is no plot, shaky camera, and the actors are horrible. The only redeeming quality is that the monsters looked cool. In all truth I felt like a cheap whore. I went home and popped in Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla to feel clean again. As said the so called plot is that a guy is moving to Japan. Apparently he broke up with his girl friend. Then the monster starts wrecking the place. After he decides to go save her all of his friends get killed. Eventulally they come face to face with the monster only to have another killed off. The main character and his "girl friend" hid under a bridge and the movie ends with them most likely dieing. The movie gives no background on where the monster even comes from. View at your own risk.
It's Clear To Me Why They Needed a Viral Campaign
posted on 29 Aug 2009Lots of hype on this one before release, with people spending way too much time trying to figure out what the monster was. The viral campaign was a way to stir up interest in a pretty bad B flick, just like Snakes On A Plane, which also sucked. Lesson learned for me at least, stay away from viral marketing gimmick flicks, as they're probably covering up for a poor movie. Really good films don't need pre-release hype and total secrecy to do well at the box office, because they deliver where it counts, in the theater. This Cloverfield movie did not come close to living up to the hype.
Why did I dislike this movie, oh let me count the ways:
1. Goofy 20 something MTV Real World rejects who I could care less about. When you don't care one iota whether the lead characters live or die you're not off to a good start.
2. Shaky cam filming which works better in theory only. I'm sure it sounded like a cool idea to everyone involved with the film, "hey, we'll film the whole thing from the prospective of someone with a home video camera so the audience feels like they're part of the action, and so the movie feels more real." Yeah, well some times good ideas don't pan out the way you intended, and the shaky cam trick in this movie was one of them. It did nothing but annoy me to no end, and completely robbed me of any enjoyment I may have had with this movie. Again, another gimmick, just like the viral marketing campaign. Are we seeing a pattern here?
3. The dialog was plain atrocious. Again, not one the lead characters was the least bit interesting or likable, so listening to them yap away was annoying enough. But at around the midway mark in the movie the lead characters are cracking jokes with each other. Excuse me, in the midst of a huge tragedy like this movie tried to portray joking would be the last thing on anyone's mind. I know the movie shamelessly tried to evoke the feelings of 9/11 and I can guarantee you no one was joking on that day in Manhattan. Dumb 20's something can't be under estimated for supreme stupidity however.
4. The monster, the big kahunna, the reason everyone went to see this movie. What a huge disappointment. The few times in the movie you actually get to see it (and I mean very few times) in all it's glory and not hiding behind a building, what you will see is a goofy looking lizard/insect/alien looking thing. Not scary or memorable in the least. The viral campaign to cook up a big stir about this creature becomes very clear now. When you have a crappy looking monster and it's a monster movie, what do you do, well you drum up lots of pre release hype with a viral marketing campaign, that's what you do!
Lastly the movie was also boring. I'll give credit for the Manhattan set recreations being done very well. You really did feel like they filmed this movie in Manhattan even though it was filmed on the Paramount Studios back lot for the majority of the flick. I imagine this movie was well received among the teen/20 something crowd who have fairly low expectations for quality cinema. I am not part of that age demographic, and for me this was a boring B movie, nothing more.
Note to self, avoid movies with J.J. Abrams attached to the movie like the plague.
....silence... "Boooo"... "That was stupid"...
posted on 28 Aug 2009Those were the above comments I heard from OTHER movie-goers as I left the theater feeling nauseous and I couldn't agree more...I would NOT Recommend this film to anyone. It was absolutely terrible.(on a side note: This is from someone who actually enjoyed the B Witch Project when it first came out...) First, the camera work was way too shaky. The attempt at trying to make the film as if thru a hand-held camera was CRAP. I actually became physically ill in the movie theater, getting a bad taste in my mouth and ended up puking slightly in the parking lot of the movie theater... NOT PLEASANT...I could have dealt with feeling nauseated and vomiting in public if the movie was entertaining or interesting or had any substance or notable acting or positives to it at all, but it had NONE of the above. The first 1/3 of the movie was so dull, with terrible acting as well unfortunately. I thought, just be PATIENT, the getting to know the characters and emotion part failed, maybe the next part would be better... something from the movie had to be good... right?? When the action began, I was thinking 'Finally! OK maybe this movie will start getting decent', that thought quickly left and I was left disappointed. WOW.I love watching all types of movies and shows, but to anyone who is even slightly interested or curious enough to be tempted to watch this film, DON'T.This movie is NOT even worth seeing ONCE.Every single one of us who saw the movie should have had "SUCKER" stamped on our foreheads after watching this film... It would be well deserved. It's a waste of money, time, a brain cell...
Exciting, yet disappointing
posted on 28 Aug 2009Like many who seen the trailer preceding Transformers, I went home and IMDb'ed it right away. It was, and still is, the best trailer I have ever seen - but maybe that's not a good thing. Good for Paramount, yes, because it got many people excited to see the movie, myself included. Not good for the audience, because I think most people will be disappointed. You don't have to follow all the online viral games to know that this is a monster movie. That's the problem - it isn't. Everybody going into this movie expected to see a monster flick. Cloverfield is not a monster movie. For the entire 74 minutes of this movie, you see a monster on camera for what I would have to estimate is a total of three minutes. So what makes up the rest of the movie? Beginning: The beginning of the movie is awful. I knew there was a party scene, I knew it was about Rob moving to Japan. I expected 5 minutes of this, at the most. It ended up being 20 excruciating minutes, which for a 74 minute film is already way too much. After the first few uncomfortable moments, I just wanted the explosion to happen. As the movie draws on and on, that anxiety turns into anger .. what the heck is going on here? I didn't think I would be watching 20 minutes of the world's most boring party with the world's most boring party-goers and some "girl-I-slept-with" story that no audience would care about. I want some action, I want thrills, I want excitement - get on with it already. I was worried about being late to this movie, I guess I should have finished my dinner - it would have been doing me a favor not being forced to sit through that.Middle: The middle of the movie is the only thing Cloverfield has going for it. From post-party to pre-ending, there is chaos. There are definitely some exciting moments, particularly when the little monsters attack in the subway, and what happens to the girl after that. Yes, I would have to admit, I was on the edge of my seat, wanting to know what was happening next. Unfortunately, after the end of the movie and thinking back on what the entire movie encompasses, I think it was a false suspense. 90% of this movie is people running around. The rest is an absolutely horrible love story. I still wanted to see what was going to happen next though - I expected a huge finish. After all, this is a monster movie right? Nope :( End: And in the end, it all comes tumbling down, almost literally. There is no end. Like some other user on here mentioned, it was as if somebody turned off the movie at the best moment. Imagine watching a movie where the guy has to defuse the bomb to save the city and right as he's deciding which wire to cut, the movie ends. That's what Cloverfield's ending is like. You just get so upset at it. There is no resolution. If you want a monster movie, don't see Cloverfield. What you will get is people running around, shaky cameras (which are OK if it fits the scene) that are shaking/angled when first-graders would handle them better, and you get possibly the worst love story ever told. If the movie was going for realism, it should go all-out, not have a 100 pound girl impaled by concrete rebar in the chest suddenly awake from near-death and somehow run like Marion Jones. Or people surviving helicopter crashes like it's nothing, while the pilots die? If you enjoy seeing people run around, not about story lines or monsters at all - then you might like this movie. Show up 20 minutes late.I wanted Cloverfield to be good, I really did. But the one-word title should be changed from "Cloverfield" to "Disappointment."
Excellent. Pure Gold.
posted on 28 Aug 2009This movie was absolutely astonishing. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Overall this movie was extremely unique. The monster, and the point of view in which the whole movie was shot in, was unlike anything I've ever experienced in a movie theater. The only thing I have heard about this movie that is quite a disappointment, was that you either "love it or hate it". I think this is somewhat true based on the other reviews, but all in all I disagree with that statement. I fell in love with this movie in the first five minutes, and was hooked all the way through the end. I would recommend this movie to anyone who wants a good thrill ride. It's starts a little slow at the beginning, but it quickly picks up speed. I thought this movie was second to none.
This movie was incredible - The best monster movie ever in my opinion
posted on 26 Aug 2009Male/24 yrs old/Detroit, MI This movie has it all. Comedy, suspense, horror, and tons of action. My expectations were very high and this movie definitely exceeded them. I was weary of the whole "Blair Witch" aspect with the hand-held camera documenting the whole movie, however, it works VERY well. This movie feels very real, the characters are great and it is pretty funny in many parts as well.Fans who can't wait to see the monster don't worry because you see plenty of it in the film, much more than you would expect watching the previews. I don't want to describe it, but trust me, you aren't left guessing what it looks like. This movie had some of the most intense scenes I have ever watched, and I don't think I have ever left a movie thinking "wow, that was an incredible movie". But I did today.Do not cheat yourself out of an amazing experience, GO SEE THIS MOVIE!
How NOT to make a movie!
posted on 26 Aug 2009This movie is by the far the worst movie that I have seen in over 10 years. The entire movie is shot hand-held without any stabilizers. What this means is that you will get dizzy (unless you are stoned), and that you may even puke before you can make it to the toilet. I saw several people running out of the movie and most likely for that reason. The storyline is nothing new, in fact nothing about the movie is new. It's just a rehash of several other movies, mixed in a blender, and puked out on the screen. The really bad thing is that it could have been an awesome movie. Just a little more work on the storyline, some real lighting, and for God's sake a real cinematographer would have made a HUGE difference. Just because the entire movie is supposed to be through the POV of one of the actors does not mean that we actually need to see it like that.Think about it. If you are jumping or running around, does the entire world shake around you? Hell now. You're brain forces your eyes to focus on individual objects so that you don't get sick. When the entire movie frame shakes, your brain is not capable of focusing your eyes on a single point as your body is not physically involved in the action. This movie gets a 0 out of 10. Don't even waste your money to see it on DVD, it's that bad.
Cloverfield was amazing! One of the best movies I've ever seen
posted on 26 Aug 2009Some people may have not liked this movie due to the abrupt ending and camera shot. Personally i enjoyed the camera work in cloverfield it made it seem very realistic. The seen in the tunnel where hud put on night vision was great. The ending had to take place where it did or else it would have drag on and the movie would have lost interest. Also surprisingly this movie had some hilarious scenes. By far Cloverfield is deserves 4 stars! they also a had some great camera work in the scene when they are on the roof and you down on the monster/alien fighting the army. If i were Rob i would have just left beth thinking she is already dead and head down to safety off of Manhattan.

posted on 31 Aug 2009When an unkown creature suddenly attacks Manhatten,a few average people grab a camcorder and set out to rescue their friend and document history.Cloverfield was filmed using a handheld camera,so those who don't have an iron stomach beware, however, this style was restricted only to camera movement not picture quality. With the film revolving mainly around its human characters and not the monster, the cast of mostly unknown actors have done an excellent job of carrying this movie by bringing their own unique personalities to the story. While watching the movie there are several instances that evoke a 9/11 feel as buildings fall in the distance and bridges are torn apart. Also,Cloverfield does a good job of portraying how the military would handle an attack like this, and how ordinary citizens would react to something like a big ol' monster barreling down 34th street like a Macy's parade float on steriods. All in all,Cloverfield is a thrilling and spooky adventure not to be missed and it has brought America back into the monster movie spotlight. There is love and loss, believable acting,a unique and powerful monster, and one huge mystery. What is it? Where did it come from? Can we stop it? Let us hope we find out soon.
