Clueless

posted on 13 Aug 2009

"Clue" is '80s proof that board game movies aren't a new idea. Apparently there are plans afoot for Monopoly and Candy Land movies. Try sitting through "Clue"... and you'll see why it works as a concept, but not on the screen.

"Clue" has Tim Curry in the role of the campy butler,a far cry from his Rocky Horror Picture Show glory. Martin Mull, Christopher Lloyd, Madeleine Kahn and Lesley Ann Warren star as the roles in the game-Col. Mustard, Mr. Peacock, Ms. Plum, and so on. They're very much stock characters, so Curry is left to improvise. "Clue" is set during the McCarthy era, and the Red Scare is a theme. Were the screenwriters attempting something "daring" during the Reagan era? Trying to make a profound statement with a campy movie... doesn't quite work.

"Clue" relies on gimmicks;namely,Curry, and its "three alternate endings." For a time,it's engrossing, just as a concept. Curry keeps the action going with one-liners. Still,it's boring. It's definitely a bored game!

Super Fantastic!

Wow... is all I can say. I mean "WOW".Believe it or not, this is by far one of the grandest pieces of art to grace the silver screen.Silly, scary, sad, sexy. It is everything. The directing is up there with classic Spielberg and Hitchcock not to mention a little Billy Wilder. The sets are so well put together they don't feel like sets! And the actors! Who thinks they are acting? Not I. It felt REAL.I can't recommend this anymore. It is just so great. I don't want to ruin the plot or anything, cause it has some major twists and turns. So just watch it and enjoy it.

An absolute classic!!!

It's an absolute travesty that this film has not rated higher than what it has. I discovered this film a couple of years ago and from the first time I watched it I was absolutely hooked. The subtle and sometimes slapstick comedy proves that even if there is a somewhat tacky script (hang on I'm not bagging it) if it is delivered by an incredibly talented group of actors, it can truly hit the spot. Congratulations go out particularly to Madeline Kahn, Eileen Brennan and the magnificent Tim Curry, who takes the film to the next level. For anyone who hasn't already seen it, I recommend. 10/10

If you love the board game, you might want to take a chance with this fair but uneven film

A group of people are summoned to an old, creepy, hilltop mansion. Among these folks are Colonel Mustard (Martin Mull), Mrs. White (Madeline Kahn), Professor Plum (Christopher Lloyd), Miss Scarlett (Lesley Ann Warren), Mrs. Peacock (Eileen Brennan), Mr. Green (Michael McKean), and a butler (Tim Curry). Almost all of them lived in the nation's capital, at some point, and crossed paths on occasion. Miss Scarlett ran an escort service, Mrs. White was the wife of a diplomat, Mr. Green worked for the FBI, etc. They have no idea why they were brought to the old mansion but soon learn that they have another connection. All of them were being blackmailed by the same man, a Mr. Body. He arrives a short while later. Also in the house are an Oriental cook and a fetching housemaid. But, soon several murders occur and the rest of the crew tries to stay alive and to figure out the identity of the killer or killers. How will it all end? The makers of this film, recognizing the popularity of the board game, have attempted to create a movie out of the slimmest of clues. While everyone knows the names of the characters, the weapons, and the rooms of the mansion, there is no further information provided by the game's creators. The result is a fair flick but one that is rather uneven. Certainly, the cast is terrific, and they try to make the most of the premise. The costumes, sets, and production values are also quite fine. However, the plot and script are of the thinnest varieties. Yes, there are some clever lines but, in truth, there is quite a bit of repetitive action, especially at the finale, where "alternate" endings are provided and details are hashed and rehashed. So, if you love the board game or any of the cast members, you will probably want to see this film and most likely will enjoy it, too. However, if you know nothing about the game, this movie will probably be a bit of a bore and your patience will be put to the task time and again.

This has got to be one of my favourite films, every line is a joke yet manages to weave in a subtle wit without seeming forced. Tim Curry is great, Chris Lloyd is at the top of his game, and Colleen Camp is the perfect french maid. A highly underrated movie.

I absolutely LOVE this movie!! When I was eight (about ten years ago) my brother and I rented it every weekend from the video store. We probably spent enough money to rent it that we could have bought it 4 or 5 times. I'm finally going to buy it now. I love Tim Curry in this movie. He's hilarious. The entire cast works well as an ensemble which makes the movie so much more enjoyable. The three different endings are also a bonus keeping you hanging to find out who really did it. I recommend this movie to anyone--humor and mystery makes for a wonderful, entertaining show. "True or false?" "True. Who are you, Perry Mason?" (Miss Scarlett)

wasted my money

I have no idea how this movie can be rated so high here at Amazon.
I bought this movie because of these rave reviews here, but I am upset that I bought it and wasted my 10 dollars. What a shame !!

The movie starts out fine. Cast includes some famous actors and actresses with big breasts. Before some narrative can be constructed, the movie blurts out all the details about the murders, and it ends. I was totally unprepared for such an abrupt and strange ending, and it left some sour taste in my mouth. I felt like I was conned.

Don't buy this DVD even if you are a big fan of the board game 'Clue'.

ADDICTING!

I first saw this movie when it came out on video in '87...and haven't stopped since. I was little then...STILL got it...and even acquired the original promotional mobile for it...and item I have NOT seen since (Containing pictures of scenes not released). Every person I've introduced it to has loved it and bought it for themselves. It's too bad it didn't do as good in the theater...or maybe we could have seen a sequel...:-)

A Tim Curry Showcase

The classic board game comes to life in this film. A bunch of characters have been summoned to a strange mansion where they are given aliases. Eventually they meet a strange character named Mr. Body. When he is mysteriously killed the fun really begins. Who killed Mr. Body? The characters don't know and they all suspect each other. The police are on the way and everyone could be guilty. The only hope is to solve the murder before the police arrive.

Despite the strong cast this movie really showcases Tim Curry the most. The film was originally released in three versions, each with a different ending. On this disk you can choose to watch the theatrical release with a random ending or you can watch the video release that includes all three endings back to back. Other than that, there are no real features other than the basics (chapter menu, subtitles, etc). The story works well and moves at a madcap pace obviously inspired by movies such as Murder By Death and The Cheap Detective while still managing to make the plot and action true to the board game. A good choice if you are looking for a zany comedy. Check it out.

A Tribute to Fantastic Comedians!

We all know the story, or at least mostly: Six seemingly unconnected guests are invited to a dinner party at a huge mysterious house and find themselves locked inside a nightmare of horror as bodies stack up around them and they slowly realize one of them is the murderer. Sounds like your normal psychological mystery thriller, right? This is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen, and it is mostly due to the performances of it's amazingly talented actors. Each one creates such a different and hilarious character that I left the film begging for more. Particularly Eileen Brennan as the over-dramatic Mrs. Peacock and Madeline Kahn as the depressive and homicidal Mrs. White. Both actresses prove themselves to be among the best in this film, but really the whole cast is great. Tim Curry is wonderfully energetic and sarcastic throughout and carries the film fantastically. All in all it's a laugh-out-loud funny film that will forever help us remember the incredible talents of it's all-star cast. 8/10 stars! Jay Addison

This movie is a classic. It has great humor and even suspense. The cast in this movie is top of the line. From the beginning to the end my attention was with the movie. This movie is different where there is not just one main star of the movie, this movie had a group of stars and they all have a chance to shine. Who did it, where did they do it and how did they do it...if you want to know watch clue and find out for yourself.

I've seen this movie countless times, and love it each time. The actors are all great, the story line is great, the whole movie is great! It's so great I've memorized the movie. There are countless quotes through out the movie, it's hard to pick just one. There are so many favorite scenes, it's hard to pick one! If you're looking for a good comedy to watch, this is it! My favorite character is Mr. Green.

Favorite parts..

when mr. green slaps mrs. peacock "i had to stop her from screaming"

when tim curry gets knocked out by a candle stick from shouting "i'm not shouting! alright i am! i'm shouting i'm shouting i'm..."

it's hard to think of all my favorite parts, when the whole movie is my favorite. go see this movie! now!

TIM CURRY...INCREDIBLY FABULOUS AS USUAL

posted on 02 Jun 2009

Tim Curry does such an excellent job in this film, (as well as all of his films) it's hard to put it into words. all of that running around and "who done it" stuff can really tire a person out! Everyone should see it, Curry fan or not! All three endings were a terrific idea, I only wish I could've seen it in the theatre! Mr. Curry is absolutely beautiful, such a talent and a joy to watch!!! I enjoy all of his performances and look forward to many many more in the years to come. Hugs and kisses to Tim Curry, you're precious!!!

CLUE could be my bible!!

Well, this is by far my favorite movie. This movie is the perfect who-dunnit/comedy on the selves. Although the movie is reletivly old, it is a "sure-fire" crowd pleaser! CLUE also has political and "adult" humor to keep the adult audience amused, while is keeps the children in suspense and stitches. I highly recommend this movie for good old fashion mystery/comedy that'll keep you guessing until the end...and even then, you'll get more surprises!!

F***ing Brilliant movie.

Its based on a board game. It flopped at the box office. Most critics dislike it (from what I've read) It must be a bad film right.WRONG!!!!I first saw this film a very long time ago when I was a child when it came on TV and I absolutely loved every second of it. I was drawn to it because it starred Tim Curry whom I had just been introduced to with with films like IT and The Three Musketeers. The plot concerns a group of strangers who are individually invited to an old house. Each character is instructed to use an alias such as "Colonel Mustard, Proffesor Plum etc." It turns out that each guest has a guilty secret and someone has been blackmailing them all. Anyway to make a long story short -too late- lol (see the movie and you'll get the joke)the blackmailer turns up dead and suspicion falls on everyone but who did it and where and with what?SPOILERS COME HERE The movie is a spoof of murder mysteries. Amusingly enough it also offers 3 endings. A killer is unmasked and then just when you think the credits are going to roll some text comes on screen "That is how it could have happened but what about this" and then we are treated to another climax. This works well considering the game involved the players making assumptions on how it could have happened. SPOILERS END HEREThe film has a great cast. Tim Curry is a god. He seems to be enjoying every minute of this film and it really shows. He steals the whole film and is flipping hilarious. The rest of the cast all have their own memorable quotes and moments. This film is very quotable.Cop Let me out: I'll book you for murder! Wadsworth: What do you mean...murder? Cop: I just said it so you'd open the door.Plum: What are you afraid of a fate worse than death? Peacock: No just death isn't that enough? The bottom line is that this movie is a gem. An absolute classic. Its funny as hell. Sports a great cast. Is quotable and has so many classic moments there isn't time to name them all. No movie collection is complete without this baby.I give it 100% score wise. It is f***ing Brilliant!

It was CLUE in the living room with the VCR

OK...I've seen this movie like a million times so I feel that I can offer a fair review:

Clue is probably one of the funniest movies I've ever seen in my life. And yes, it has some plot holes and other problems, but who cares? It offers safe, intelligent fun; quick pacing, and all around murdurous laughs. The cast is perfect chemistry (Curry as butler Wadsworth is satisfying enough alone- "there was a rumble of thunder and a crah of lightening") and the ensemble is great: Warren as Miss Scarlet is perfect in the role because of her laid back reactions and fun head-bobbing ("I enjoy getting presents from strange men...") ; Brennan plays the perfect neortic Mrs. Peacock ("and oh my, this soup is delicious, isn't it?"); Kahn shines as the black widow, Mrs. White ("is that chair for you, Mr. Wadsworth?", McKean plays the perfect quasi-homosexual ("we have to find out which one of YOU did it..."), Lloyd masters the uptight Prof. Plum ("What's the phone number?") and Mull personifies Col. Mustard ("I can't take anymore scares!")

This movie is quick-witted, well acted and well-paced. The physical comedy wears a bit thin at times, but is compensated by the actors abilty keep the attention of the viewer. Just as a good mystery should, the movie hides details so that watching it just once won't ruin it for the rest of the time. Pay attention to the clues in the rooms (such as the picture in the dining room, and the picture in the pile that gets thrown into the fire in the Study)and details in the dialouge, not so much to figure out the murder, but to grasp a full knowledge of the era, each characters background (such as the connection between Scarlet and the maid) and hidden tidbits of fun.

Keeping true to the format of the boardgame, there are such lines as "We have to find out who did it and where and with what", the placement of the rooms (although the movie adds 3 more floors to the house- the basement, the upstairs and the attic; and the secret passages (we know these cant really exist because of the house's floor plan, but who cares, they're essential to the movie. Watch for goofs, such as the order of the women changes when they enter the study to find mr. boddy missing, and the diappearing/reaapearing pot on the stove in the kitchen.

Iwas dissapointed, however, when the DVD came out and there were no deleated scenes included. There has to be, the choppy editing in the last 10 minutes of the 3rd ending suggests that it was edited for time, plus the trailor includes scenes that are definatly not in the released version of the movie.

Enjoy!
