an 80's action classic
posted on 20 Apr 2009sly stallone stars in this cannon film actioner about marion cobretti, a cop who does the jobs no one else wants. his latest assignment involves taking down an army of psychopathic killers and protecting their latest target. cannon films weren't known for there high quality but they were plenty of fun to watch. cobra is mindless action at its best. stallones cobra character is one cool dude and its a shame this film didn't get as much attention as rocky or rambo. at only 87 minutes cobra moves quickly and gets right to the point. its a film you can just sit back and enjoy. there isn't a ton of action but when it comes its great. a hectic car chase and the final battle are the highlights. director george p. cosmatos handles the action well just as he did in stallones other classic, first blood part 2. cobra isn't as good as that film but its still a good action flick. my only real complaint is it could have been a little more violent. a lot of the bad guys get shot with no bullet wounds appearing. this isn't a real problem, its just something i like in action films. 9/10 great movie
Marion!!!
posted on 04 Feb 2009Cobra is one of those movies that you either love or you hate. Personally, I liked it because there really is nothing to get too serious about in the film. Even the serial killer concept is played out merely as a device to load up the body count (Silence of the Lambs this isn't). The blood looks fake and the jokes are really lame, but then so is the acting. Cobra involves Sylvester Stallone (who else?) as Marion "Cobra" Cobretti, a match-chewing cop who fights against the liberal system while trying to stop a gang of axe-wielding revolutionaries who gather in abandoned swimming pools and takes hostages in grocery stores. I have never understood what this faction wants or needs, but it is enough that they scream about a "new world order" given that any hint of discord was deemed a treasonous act while the Soviet Union stood tall. A group of violent misfits want to change America and that is enough to have them slaughtered in the streets. And, given that they are left-wing, they must be comical and one-dimensional, with no attempt made to distinguish them from the entire clientele of an average American death row. George P. Cosmatos, who formerly teamed up with Stallone to make Rambo II, keeps this movie motoring along with a substantial body count and some good old smash-'em-up car chases that are entertaining, if not strictly believable. You never feel like the movie is overly long and there is enough action for any aficionados of the genre. Some of the one-liners are heavy "groan" material like (Bad Guy) "I'll blow this whole place up" (Stallone) "Go ahead, I don't shop here", but then it never claimed to be a Shakespearean drama either.
DIRTY HARRY RIP-OFF
posted on 21 Nov 2008I used to like this movie, because of at the time, I loved watching Sly mow down the bad guys Rambo-style, but I now understand why people hate it. The bad guys are weak, killing for no reason, the dialogue is cliched and Stallone basically does his best (?) Clint Eastwood impression, posing tough and whirling his gun. If you want to see a decent Stallone cop thriller, watch Nighthawks - it's believable, suspenseful, exciting and features a much more charismatic villain.
another goof I noticed
posted on 03 Nov 2008for starters I love this *beep* movie but did anyone notice in the beginning after the Supermarket Scene when Cobra is watching the news and cleaning his gun he is clearly watching the 6:00pm news but its still daylight outside when this takes place around Christmas and Christmas of course takes place around winter my point is it gets Dark early around Winter so I'm wondering its still light out when the 6:00pm news is on did any one else here besides me realize this other than that I love this movie the best action movies of the 80s this movie had the best lines and great action sequences its too bad that they never make movies like this anymore
You're the disease, and I'm the cure.
posted on 01 Oct 2008This film was nominated in practically every category for worst film of 1986. Of course, Sly Stallone gets those nominations regularly for his totally emotionless performances. He was no different here.I cannot believe that Madonna took the award away from Brigitte Nielsen . She, too, went through this film like a zombie. You are paid to act; let's see some acting.I do disagree with the criticism of Brian Thompson as Worst New Star. I thought he was typecast as the psycho slasher and I would run as fast as I could should i ever meet him on the street.Bad acting, bad direction, and bad dialog.
Cheesy good action movie
posted on 01 Oct 2008"Cobra" borrows some plot points from the far superior "Dirty Harry," not to mention a few cast members as well. Stallone's character is obviously a Harry Callahan type. One thing that makes "Cobra" weak is it's dialogue. It is quite cheesy. But, maybe that's something that makes it kind of fun as well. You know not to take the movie too seriously, just try to have some fun with it. Regardless of the fact that it's a copycat of "Dirty Harry" (which is one of my all time favorite movies), and has some one liners that you want to roll your eyes at, I still like "Cobra." My rating: 7/10
Machismo done gay
posted on 23 Aug 2008On the surface Cobra may sound like a tough nickname. It could conjure images of a man that has lightening instincts, a man that is volatile, unpredictable and lethal. But when the man in question wears reflective sunglasses, black shirts, jeans, leather gloves and stubble, you can't help but feel the nickname has a hidden meaning. After all, what else is a cobra but a long slithering thing that stands erect and squirts hot venom into people's faces? And just bear in mind the ensemble I've just described. It's exactly the same ensemble that George Michael wore in 'Faith' (and Sly actually says at one point, "You've gotta have faith"). I can't wait for Cobra 2: The Cottaging. But Cobra's true nature is revealed in other ways. At one point he confesses that his real name is Marion. And he was so ashamed of it that he decided to hide his girly name by creating this Cobra alter ego. But unfortunately machismo and gayness are bosom buddies. The more macho you try and make yourself the more gay you ultimately become. It's a circle, man. You start off on the wheel of heterosexuality, but the more hetero you try and make yourself, the more likely you are to spin off onto the wheel of the gay.Another hint at Cobra's confused mental state is his confession that he doesn't really get along with women. He's happier sucking on the match he perpetually keeps in his mouth and hanging out with is partner. However, Brigitte Neilsen eventually persuades the reluctant hero to kiss her, but unfortunately she's about as feminine as male sodomy. You're fooling no one, Cobra. And whose bright idea was it to have Brigitte Neilsen in the film, anyway? Oh yeah, it was probably Sly's. But anyway, she's supposed to play a meek witness, a woman of great vulnerability. Yeah, right. She could kick Sly's butt in a heartbeat, as well as the hundreds of people Cobra mows down in the process of the film. And there's another reason why her casting is stupid (besides the fact that she can't act and that she's about as sexy as a visit to the proctologist): she's considerably bigger than Sly. Just watch the film. Every time you see them in a long shot together, she has to either stoop, kneel or actually get on her knees so that we can't see what a midget Sly is. You insecure, Cobra? Yep, that's more evidence.Yet more proof is the fact that Cobra drives a muscle car that has nitrous oxide in it. It's such a ridiculously macho thing for a cop to have that again it becomes so straight that it turns gay. Dirty Harry didn't need no nitrous. All he needed was an unfeasibly large gun.And it's quite amusing how the film tries (and fails) to successfully ape Dirty Harry. Fascist cop: check. Large gun: check. Insane bad guy: check. Goddamn liberals getting in the way: check. But while Harry, in the hands of Clint Eastwood, was a man who was believably tough, Stallone instead comes over as nothing more than a preening girly-man in bad clothes. But again on the subject of Dirty Harry, it's amusing that the goddamn liberal cop in this film is played by Andrew Robinson, the Scorpio Killer. And although he doesn't get to kill anyone, he does get to hamper the hero with talk of laws and due process. And so outraged is Cobra at one point that immediately after getting read the riot act he whips out his gun and fires at a target in a shooting range. Translation: wouldn't the world be a better place if cops could just kill people on sight. After all, cops never make mistakes do they? And the media is no better. In the opening scene the airy-fairy, Martini-drinking, liberal low-life hacks have the audacity to question the Cobra's methods. Why talk when a bullet cures all ills? However, there was something interesting I noted in the film. Quite often, when something bad happens, there's a Pepsi sign behind Cobra's head. Is this a criticism of 80s greed? Is it comment on rampant consumerism? Nah, it's nothing of the sort. It's a celebration of those things. I mean, there's a bit at the start where Cobra, for no justifiable reason whatsoever, interrupts a fire-fight so that he can take a sip of some sweet, refreshing Coors lager. He might as well have just winked at the screen. But more disturbing than all of this is a horrible 80s montage where Cobra hits the streets. He's on the look out for the mad killer. But unfortunately this 'macho' sequence is accompanied by some abysmal 80s pop rock abomination. And then to make it even worse, every time we hear synthesised drums we get a flash of Brigitte Neilsen in a photo-shoot in a swimsuit surrounded by robots (?). If this is a love poem from Sly to his ex-wife then stab me in the eye quick because I don't think I can take it any longer.
More Gratuitously Violent Sylvester Stallone Action Drivel
posted on 11 Aug 2008The continuous blood and guts violence is basically what builds up the script of "Cobra", one of Sylvster Stallone's all time worst films. When given the right script, Stallone can really deliver. It's a real shame that it doesn't happen very often, however. Stallone's then wife Brigitte Nielsen costars with him here (they also appeared together in "Rocky 4"). If you're in a really big mood for some Stallone, see this one only if every other Stallone film (not counting the even worse "Cop Land") is not on TV at the time or not available in the video store.
a good Stallone flick
posted on 30 Jul 2008I have read the comments on Cobra & they all have some good things to say.
It was not an Oscar winning movie, but it was in no way Stallone's low-point..that's Rhinestone bub! Cobra is a good action flick. I mean, I read somewhere that one person who commented didn't know WHY the killers are trying to create a "New World". If you had common sense, it means that they hate the world they lived in..that's WHY they're killing people to create a new world. Far fetched, but hey, it's an action movie! I give it a 9 out of 10. Not Stallone's best action flick, but it was much better than RHINESTONE! :) You picky critics can nit-pick this movie, but it's an action flick..it's no The Firm, it's no Dances with Wolves..it's no Glory.
So, I'm rating this as an action movie..and action movies serve to have lots of good action...cheesy or not..so, Cobra is definitly a great action flick, just wish you picky critics would understand that.
Neo-Jacobite Polemic
posted on 27 Jul 2008Ludwig Wittgenstein's famous maxim, "The world is all that is the case" echoes like a Himalayan avalanche throughout this enraged paean to loss and justice. With a reticulated mandible declaring his Romanesque nihilism, Sylvester Stallone wanders like a hybrid of Diogenes and Camus through a landscape of indifferent carnage, shadowing a Nordic Eurydice for a chance at absolution. Killing is as bereft of moral resonance as a cow on its way to the Arc de Triomphe, and bullet wounds erupt like a tapestry of wanton abstract expressionist canvases gone homicidal. A cinematic tabula rasa would provide an anodyne therapy for this trip. Or, as Chester Conklin once expounded, "I stink, therefore I'm ham."
Knight in shining sunglasses
posted on 09 Jul 2008This film is about as believable as... baloney with cheese. But just about as hard boiled as a diamond rock. Despite this, it's quite entertaining, if not always for the right reasons. It's gotta be any teenagers dream film, and it's a good look back at the 80's. So how do you watch it? Well, baring these facts in mind, of course! It all amounts to a good evening laughing at the tough-talk, and gawking the nicely done car chases - at least by 80's standards. With lines like "This is where the law stops, and I start," it's no wonder Stallone was cast for Judge Dredd. The best thing about this film's gotta be the music. It's kind of got a vibe from the Alien films - and maybe even 2001, only this isn't about creatures from outer space. Hm, but actually it might have been better if it was. And after all the lead antagonist did go on to play in the X-Files series. The film's got a kind of Postmanesque anti-television message, mixed in with an evil sect with some kind of kill-off-the-weak-to-make-lebensraum ideology. That part was really lame, and this is why I think the evil-doers could have been swapped with aliens, or something like that. Otherwise, Stallone is the perfect knight in shining sunglasses saving the damsel in distress. How's that for original! But it's still quite OK for an action flick like this.
Entertainment's the disease...meet the cure.
posted on 28 Apr 2008Having already created such memorable characters as Rocky and Rambo to the world, Stallone still must have felt that there were still not enough heroes for people to look up to (that were portrayed by him). So with "Cobra", he introduces another two-syllable, five-letter name to the public conscious.Too bad there was no story.I love car chases, crashes, explosions and mindless violence as much as the next guy, and there were some moments here that would make a demolitions expert salivate. But there's no real story to get your hooks into: just bad guys showing up and terrorizing, Stallone entering the frame and saying a sound byte, then blowing them away.Stallone purists take note: this is the ONLY character he's played that is identified by a five-letter, two-syllable name that is violent either with fists or guns or both, that NEVER GOT A SEQUEL.Tragic irony or poetic justice? You tell me.Three stars. And coming soon, "Cobra 2: Blazing Badges"Wait, better not give Hollywood any more ideas.
I don't want no more of your renegade action Butch!
posted on 04 Apr 2008For sheer unadulterated cheese combined with sublimely funny renegade antics this is surly the film. I loved it from start to finish with the highly notable first scene being the stand out centrepiece. Everything that is good about the male action hero is summed up this 20-minute bloodbath, little care is taken to dialogue and the one liner is king. From the moment when Stallone gives his crime wave countdown monologue you know this is a no thinking required action fest with plenty of violence to boot. However, watching this film is at times like one of the police chase shows. You know its simple chaos but you just can't take your eyes off it. Please watch this film...but leave your brain at home.
"I'm the cure"
posted on 29 Mar 2008It's amazing how much childhood memories of films can influence you when you see them many years later. I saw Cobra when I was 8 years old, my father managed to get me in and I remember I had a blast. When playing a sort of "cops and robbers" I would relentlessly repeat these lines "you're the disease, I'm the cure".I watched this film a few weeks ago for the first time in 18 years and I realized that it's basically total crap. It's never believable for one second, Stallone looks ridiculous, the action is wholly unbelievable, the dialouge (and basically the whole script) is very poorly written and the direction is, well, not so good.Still, this movie will always have a special place on my DVD shelf for I can still remember being an impressionable and feisty 8 year old who wanted nothing more than to look and sound just like one Marion Cobretti and sport those "cool" sunglasses and a machine gun.
Stallone at his most annoying
posted on 11 Mar 2008I would have rated this movie a 10 if it weren't for the unbelievably stupid dialogue, the ludicrous plot and Stallones poor imitation of Arnold Scharzennegar. His characterization just completely annoyed me and I actually found myself rooting for someone to beat him senseless or cap him with a nine. LOL Bridget Neilsen was actually the BEST part of this flick if you can believe that!?! My rating......3
This Trashy Action/Thriller is Entertaining if not taken Seriously.

Which Cobretti, his partner and the witness have no clue that the woman police officer is also a Cult Member.Directed by the late-George P. DVD has an sometimes entertaining commentary track by the director, behind the scenes featurette, production notes and trailers of Slyvester Stallone films. The film was filmed in a tight shooting scheduled and it was release in theaters, a month after filming. This was a Box Office Hit. It was a Big Hit on video and a television favorite with additional footage. Based on a Novel by Paula Gosling, titled "Fair Game". Screenplay by the actor:Stallone. You're the disease and I'm the cure.
posted on 04 Feb 2008Cobra is one of the most cardboard characters I have ever seen. I know I don't have a monopoly on that opinion but what I do think about the movie is not the general consensus. I actually love this movie. I love all the cheeseball scenes of violence. I love the macho lines. I love the supporting characters. I think we can all agree that Cobra wasn't going for the Oscars here. But what it does is entertains you for 90 minutes, and the script is so fresh with one liners that you can't wait for the next one to pop up. One of my favourites is when Ingrid? says to Cobra " What's wrong? You look so mad. " and he replies, " I always get this way before breakfast." If these are the kind of lines that you can stomach and not really care about seeing the next Gandhi or Out Of Africa, then this is the film for you. George P. Cosmatos has directed some excellent pictures with Rambo and Tombstone, Cobra is about as fun as those ones. Sure the plot is lacking and we never really find out what the New World was supposed to be or what it was supposed to accomplish, but it is the execution that makes this film the hoot that it is. And did I mention the script? Because it really is funny, and it makes Stallone's Cobra look to be the toughest man alive. There is a review in here ( I think it is the one below mine ) where the person who wrote it was talking about things that I have never heard of. His review may as well been a foreign language. All I know is that he ultimately didn't like Cobra, that much I can understand. But if what you are doing is going into this film and comparing it to Shakespeare or Dionyses or Thropolese or whatever it is that he or she said in the review then my recommendation is to curl up with a really good Jane Austen hook and have a brandy by a warm fire. That is what your speed is, and I guess there is nothing wrong with that. But if you want to be mindlessly entertained for 90 minutes, rent Cobra. It action packed, the characters are clichéd so that you can laugh at them and the script is funny. Don't look for Cobra to be something that it was never meant to be. It's not going to teach you anything valuable about life. It's just good, fun entertainment. That's it.
The vivid imagination of a teenager gone haywire
posted on 12 Dec 2007And you know who that teenager is? Yes, it's Stallone. And he's been a teenager all his life. You remember when you were a kid/teenager and you played with toy guns? If you happened to be the good guy, you probably imagined shooting 100+ bad guys, saving the innocent, saving the beautiful girl, saving children, doing justice (maybe because you were frustrated because of the C- in Math and you wanted to kill the teacher). You remember how you felt small because the captain of the football team got all the attention and the girls? That you sometimes craved for attention from everybody, that you sometimes wanted to be the hero of the day? Well maybe not, but regardless of the frustrations and naive dreams that you may have had, most of us grew up. Stallone apparently didn't and he made movies. All his movies portray what he would like to be: that common man that became uncommon because of his deeds, and who shines like the sun and everybody looks up to him. And of course, doing it alone, all alone. No wonder he's a favorite with children, teens, bodyguards, night clerks, and other inherently frustrated people. Cobra is a perfect example of that Stallone "wet dream". I mean, cutting a pizza with scissors and eating it with his glove????? Oh right, he's an unconventional rebel helping people, Mr.Justice himself. And those bad guys keep coming in waves. Bring'em on, Cobretti is gonna waste all of you, preferably in as many ways as possible and without as much as getting a scratch. And the ammo never ends...And the main bad guy has too be clichéd, because it wouldn't fit with Stallone's fantasy if he wasn't.And of course he's a pain in the a*** with the police department, he is misunderstood in his methods...Well what can I say, I wouldn't trust a guy who cuts his pizza with a scissor either. In any case I laughed from start to finish and it deserves 2 points for that. Man, will Sly ever grow up?

It has its place but...
posted on 25 Jul 2009Overall Cobra fulfilled my expectations as a cheesy/action/crime movie with plenty of violence. Cobra doesn't offer much else, but sometimes thats all you need. There are plenty of better crime/cop/action films around (see below), but Cobra definitely has its place in exploring what they thought the modern day hero was: the car, the automatic weapons, the name, the sense of humour etc. There is a film that anyone who is a fan of Cobra has to see. The film is Mad Max (1979). I understand that Cobra was a concoction of ideas from its predecessors and i think that Mad Max was a clear influence. Where Cobra fails to provide grit, heart and a true sense of realism in a an unreal world, Mad Max succeeds (maybe more-so for me because I'm from oz). Mad Max is set in a future world where crime over runs the state, only one man is able to truly beat the criminals and their inherent evil (sound familiar?).Anyway see the film, Cobra was a great film. But if you want to see something that is a little less cheesy and sadly comedic then have a look at Mad Max - you wont be disappointed
