Get Ready To Fly
Buckle Up!
They were deadly on the ground. Now they have wings.
Welcome to Con Air.
Cameron Poe is an Army Ranger who was going to go home to his pregnant wife when he got into a fight with three men. He would kill one of them and the other two ran away with the knife they had and because of that he would be convicted of manslaughter. After eight years he would be paroled. He would be part of a group that's being transferred to another prison and flown in a special plane. While in flight a fight breaks out and two of the most dangerous criminals, Diamond Dog and Cyrus the Virus Grissom, would break out from their restraints and take over the plane. When the plane makes it's first stop Poe and friend who's a diabetic and who wasn't given his shot, and all the syringes were destroyed, try to get off but Grissom wouldn't let them. He then tries to alert the authorities but got away. Now the government is considering shooting the plane down but U.S. Marshall Vince Larkin thinks that it's a little hasty and believes that Poe is an ally. When Grissom leads them on a wild goose chase, Poe alerts them to where they are going.

Good expectations paid off.
posted on 15 Aug 2009Easily the best action movie of 1997. Several terrible movies were released in the summer of that year (The pretentious AFO, the loop-holed Face/Off, etc.) but you have to look at this one for what it is; Don't expect any Oscar winning performances, just sit back, relax, and have yourself a good time. The only big flaw was in the beginning when Nicolas Cage's character was convicted for this crime in the first place. (The reasonable excuse was "self defense" but the line of him being a "human weapon" was a propaganda trip.) Nevertheless, he takes an armed plane home after he served his time, it get's hi-jacked by the criminals aboard and he lives through the whole thing with just a couple of bruises. Call it trite, but hey, the whole thing was fun!Overall, a good roller coaster ride with a great supporting cast.
Get ready for the ride of your life!!!!!!!
posted on 12 Aug 2009If you have not seen Con Air you are missing out big time it is the most electrifying film in hollywood this year. Nick Cage is the main character but you have to give a lot of credit to Steve Buscemi for his amazing and moving portrail of Garland Greene. With this being Simon West's first film I look forward to seeing more of his productions. A must see film for action lovers.8.5/10
Pure Entertainment
posted on 20 Jul 2009Despite it's cast of respected actors, 'Con Air' is not a good film in the traditional sense. It's not a good film in the way Pulp Fiction, Casablanca, and/or Taxi Driver is a good film. But for sheer entertainment and high velocity action, 'Con Air' is one helluva movie. Oscar winner Nicolas Cage (Best Actor, 'Leaving Las Vegas') plays Cameron Poe, a good man who is sentenced to 7to10 years in prison after killing a man in a bar brawl while defending his wife (Monica Potter). As Cameron waits out his 7 years, his wife gives birth to their daughter and it turns out that Cameron is getting out on her birthday and he's determined to make a good impression. To get from the federal prison he's in to where his wife and daughter are, he must ride on a plane filled with dangerous inmates (besides Cameron, the rest of the men are being transferred to higher security joints). Once the plane begins to move, a plan is set in motion. On the plane is the psychotic, yet brilliant Cyrus "The Virus" Grissom (John Malkovich) who leads the crusade of rebellious criminals...With the help of Diamond Dog (Ving Rhames) and all the other inmates aboard of course. Meanwhile, a cop named Vince Larkin (John Cusack) becomes an aide to Cameron as he puts his wits to the test to outsmart Cyrus and the rest of the gang. Add in Steve Buscemi as a hilariously dangerous psychopath and a pre-Chapelle show Dave Chappelle as Pinball, a crack addict...You got a great action movie with some comedic relief. The movie is completely illogical, in almost every aspect. So disregard logic at the door, it's not needed here. But you got to look at the bigger picture here. Is this merely a good action film because of it's high adrenaline? It also has to do with the cast. Most action films have action stars in it. In this film, we're given highly respect and even Oscar nominated/winning actors. You have Nicolas Cage, who's accent sounds a bit fake but is good nonetheless. You got Ving Rhames, who's perfect. You have Steve Buscemi as a pointless character, that you actually grow to like and even appreciate...Then you have John Malkovich. What a completely underrated actor. He's never won an Oscar, a lot of commercial film viewers don't even know who he is, and this guy is one of the finest American actors. Even in this film, the way he delivers his dialogue and that steely look in his eye is just so perfect. As I said...If you want a smart, logical action film. This is not for you. If you want a pull-no-punches action film, with great performances to boot. Here's "Con Air"
GRADE: A
action, action, and more action
posted on 19 Jul 2009I thought this was a real good movie. It had great special effects, great acting, and a cool plot. This movie has a lot of action. A group of cons have taken over a plane that transfers them to different prisons. But Poe is riding on the plane to hitch a ride home from being in prison for eight years to see his wife and little girl. So it is up to him to bring the plane down. 8/10. A must see!!!!
An awesome and exhilarating thrill ride everyone should take
posted on 07 Jul 2009Strap yourselves in, fasten your seatbelts and prepare for one of the most exhilarating thrill rides of your life as "Con Air" takes you on a two-hour adventure that includes an all-star cast, powerful action sequences and great direction."Con Air" revolves around a plane carrying high-risk prisoners being transported to a maximum-security prison. However, the prisoners have other ideas. The "Con Air" director chose five immensely and incredibly talented actors who fit this formula. Nicolas Cage, John Cusack, John Malkovich, Ving Rhames lead an all-star, stellar cast in "Con Air." It didn't take long to realize these five actors contained a massive amount of chemistry.Cage stars as Cameron Poe, a parolee on his way home to his wife and daughter until he runs into a problem and save the day. Cage is one of the most versatile actors I have come across. Playing everything from a romantic lead in "It Could Happen To You" and Moonstruck" to dramatic roles in "Leaving Las Vegas" and "Bringing Out The Dead" to comedic roles in "Trapped In Paradise" and "Guarding Tess." Cage is the ultimate action star combining all of these elements to bring home the role of Cameron Poe.Monica Potter and young Landry Albright star as Cameron's wife and daughter to whom he is flying home to after being paroled. Potter's beauty radiates off the screen with such heat and force I almost melt. She may not be a veteran at the time, but Potter's poise, beauty, talent and presence has proved that she could be mistaken for one. I relish every opportunity I had to watch her on screen because I knew what I was seeing was something special. Potter is on the rise with awards in her future and great films on the horizon.Albright's performance as Casey brought smiles to my face because she is one of the cutest and most talented newcomers to hit Hollywood in recent years. Albright may not have a lot of dialogue, but her presence on screen is a sight for sore eyes, her beauty is hypnotizing and her energy is electric.Albright will have a long, bright future in acting if she decides to pursue the profession because she has the special sparkle in her eye and aura surrounding her. I can't wait to see her next film.Malkovich is Cyrus 'The Virus' Grissom, the ringleader of the hijacking. Malkovich's face oozes with villainous intent, which is one of the reasons he is so great at playing one. With his role in "Con Air," he proves once again he is the best. Cyrus was calm, cool, and collected in the face of danger as he led his group of convicts. I have gained a new respect for Malkovich because I was able to see the true range and versatility he brought to the role. However, the best was yet to come as I learned that the supporting cast was a welcome surprise. For example, Rhames is Nathan 'Diamond Dog' Jones, Cyrus' right hand man. Mykelti Williamson stars as Baby-O O'Dell, Poe's only friend on board "The Jailbird." John Cusack is Vince Larkin, a federal agent, who from the ground is doing his best to bring down the plane full of convicts. At odds with Larkin is Duncan Malloy, played by Colm Meaney.Another aspect of "Con Air" I enjoyed was the writing because the film was able to tell a story with substance without letting the action take over. Creating great character development and story depth are just a few examples how the writers were able to win me over. The special effects in "Con Air" is great that it made me feel as if were part of that flight right along with the convicts. I commend director Simon West, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer on how well they put together the action sequences and bringing together the tremendous cast without any clash of egos. Finally, the one thing that signed, sealed, and delivered this movie was the signature song performed by Trisha Yearwood called "How Do I Live." It remains my favorite song even today, five years after "Con Air" was released. This is an action packed film from start to finish that has a believable plot; as well as comedic moments at times with great one-liners by various actors. I urge everyone to see "Con Air" for a great action film with substance.
Absolute garbage
posted on 29 Jun 2009Lots and lots of things being blown up. That's about all I really got out of this flick. Things that are noticeably absent here: a plot and decent acting. I guess the producers figured they could cover up the bad script with cheap Hollywood stunts and gimmicks. If you have nothing better to do for two hours than be entertained by explosions and cheap thrills, then this film is for you. However, if you are in search of an intelligent film, or anything even remotely intelligent, look elsewhere.
Must try harder to beat "Die Hard"
posted on 25 Jun 2009I like my action films. Few things relax me more than a mindless action flick with big bangs, lots of gun-fu and a couple of cans of cold lager. In my fridge, not the film. Anyway, I watched Con Air with some trepidation. I had recently watched "Air Force One" and had some idea that this would be along those lines. The fact is, both films suffer badly. Nicolas Cage plays a US Ranger jailed for accidentally killing a man who attacked Cage and his wife. During his sentence, he is assigned to join the cream of criminal America on a flight to transport these scum to another prison. But wouldn't you just know it, something goes wrong and in the end, the lunatics end up running the asylum - so to speak. As it becomes clear that this is a highly orchestrated escape attempt by master baddie Syrus the Virus (played by John Malkovich), Cage must safely bring the plane down and save the day. The casting of Colm Meaney (Chief O'Brian from Star Trek: TNG) as a piece of Government garbage was a mistake so bad, I wanted the person responsible to be pushed out of the plane. Chief O'Brian's numberplate reading Azz Kcker? About as likely as Saddam winning the Nobel peace prize! Nic Cage can do action - anyone who's seen "Face Off" or "The Rock" will tell you that. And to be honest, he's possibly the best thing about this film. Steve Buscemi looks bored, John Malkovich over-acts for all he's worth and John Cusack is... do you know, I've forgotten all about him. And I've already touched on Colm Meaney but I haven't had so much of an urge to punch my TV since Jar Jar Binks in the Phantom Menace.Little things as well didn't help this picture. The diabetic black guy could have been called Token for all he was worth and the camp cross-dresser was the final straw for me. Cage's Holier-than-Christ US Ranger did grate on my nerves a bit but by the time the plane finally crashed into Vegas (without killing anybody but the inmates), I'd had enough. As my summary says, this film must try harder to beat Die Hard.
A great movie
posted on 25 Jun 2009This is one of the few movies that I really enjoyed among the many that I rented and viewed at home. It gives you great action, makes you laugh, and almost moves you to tears when Poe finally meets his family, alive. Besides, it is unbelievable that the producers actually crashed a real plane into a real building. Furthermore, the casting of Nicolas Cage, and its music, are both among the best that I have ever seen.I bet you will enjoy flying "Con Air".
One of the coolest action movies EVER!
posted on 04 Jun 2009Nicolas Cage plays Cameron Poe, a highly decorated US ranger, who is convicted of manslaughter after protecting his wife in a drunken brawl. Finally, after eight years, he's being paroled and going home to his wife and daughter. His ride home: the 'Jailbird', a plane which is also transporting society's vicious murderers to Feltham Penitentiary, Lousiana's toughest maximum security prison. A surprising escape is made on board the plane as the cons seize control of the plane! To me this has to equal Face/Off & The Rock as Cage's best action films! It has excellent characters played to perfection, such as John Malkovich as 'Sirus the Virus', and Steve Buschemi as 'Garland Green' aka 'The Marietta Mangler'. The action races along with little release, and yes it can be seen as a little cliché, as it's about a good guy has some bad luck to end up in jail, then just when he's going home to his family hits some more bad luck and has to save the day, but I defy anyone not to be impressed when Cage's character continues to storm ahead without flinching, after been shot in the arm. All in all, one of my favourite action movies!
Smart, ironic popcorn flick
posted on 21 May 2009Definitely worth renting! Okay, so the beginning as well as the family scenes with Nicolas Cage and his cutesy blonde wife and his cutesy blonde daughter are so horribly pathetic they get you sick. But once the movie's unique dry humor breaks through, it's really enjoyable; it has some great laughs and excellent actors. The dialogues include a lot of pretty intelligent one-liners, and even without reading any interviews you can sense that the crew had quite a good time blowing up each single item on the set, which contributes to the popcorn movie atmosphere.
An action packed thriller
posted on 26 Apr 2009Nicolas Cage recovers from the letdown that he suffered from "The Rock" with a strong action hero lead in this 1997 Touchstone release. The genre gets a twist here. Cage's character is actually a criminal but he gradually tries to turn himself into a hero when upon getting paroled and boarding a criminal infested plane back home, the plane is hijacked by a psychopath (John Malkovich). Just like he did in "In The Line Of Fire", Malkovich handles portraying a sinister villain to great effect and Cage can really deliver when the right scripts and roles come along. Genuine action, suspense and thrills abound in this film that ranks as one of Cage's very best.
So much speed, so much energy
posted on 26 Apr 2009The most awesome scene in this movie must be that fighting scene where somebody shoots our hero in the arm and he just keeps on walking. This thing has really slapped together a great cast for an action movie. John Malkovich! Ving Rhames! John Cusack! Steve Buscemi! The relevant Nicholas Cage! All in one movie, all in great straight-forward action scenes that remind me of John Woo. The writing is semi-mindless, with an appetite for destruction, but occasionally it shows more depth. Buscemi's conversation with the little girl is another highlight. The plot has been done millions of times, but never really this well. The developments are great, they keep everything dynamic, where most action flicks fade out and tend to drag near the ending. From that angle the screenplay is actually pretty creative. It's a movie that's probably at best in a wide-screen, surround sound, cinema experience, but you could watch it on a cell phone and it would still be cool. In conclusion, "Con Air" just plain rocks.
One Positive thing...
posted on 02 Apr 2009This movie sucks on all sides. To much testosterone. The bad accent of Nicolas Cage. The movie irritated me the whole time, but there was something positive: Steve Buscemi. He was the one that made the movie a bit enjoyable and proves why he is one of my favorite actors. Usually I like Nicolas also, but he really messed up this time.
If you know it's stupid, does that make it o.k.?
posted on 21 Mar 2009While the comic one-liners liberally quoted (and misquoted) in the other reviews
stay in mind, this film is a rancid hash of cliches put together by people who
can't construct a screenplay or edit a sequence so that it is within wavingdistance of logic. Nicholas Cage may have been a good actor at one time, butafter seeing him in this and in "Adaptation" (where he seems to think that adifferent shirt is a different characterization), I'm not so sure. If there's anything
going on inside him, it's not reaching his face and it's sure not reaching his
audience. Everyone else gives up and chews the scenery, and Steve Buscemi has thegrace to look embarrassed. (Would someone please give this guy a role wherehe *doesn't* have to play a creep? See "Parting Glances" if you can find it to get
an idea of what his range would be like if some casing agent had imagination.)
This is a waste of everyone involved, except for the hacks producing, writing,
and directing this mess and for Cage, who is starting to look like he deserves it.
CON AIR IS CRAZY GOOD!
posted on 17 Feb 2009this movie is just one hell of a good time. from beginning to end. it has lots of action, suspense, and you just don't know what to expect with so many criminally insane people on board one plane. just what you'd imagine would happen, there's a leader, the followers, and a pleaser. a little bit of everything you got the smart ones, the tough ones, the weak ones, the crazy ones, and a couple of good ones. a bunch of bad seeds aboard and take over the plane to try to escape. up to one guy to be the hero. in comes nicolas cage a good old southern boy, just at the wrong place at the wrong time, his hearts in the right place, but it's him against a bunch. very strong, and determined in this film i thought he was excellent. the good guy, the loving husband, and caring father. great actor, and as always did it just right. john cusack another of my favorites. is a bit funny and nics helper on the ground. they form a friendly bond through all this drama, and the evil villian john malkovich, is a great one for sure. smart, crazy, and mean. a deadly combination. overall the movie is great, definitely recommend.

Put down the bunny
posted on 28 Aug 2009Great premise for an action movie - put "every creep and freak in the universe on one plane" (they're transferring a bunch of murderers, rapists, and arsonists in one fell swoop.) Cuff `em to the aisle seats. The really bad guys, like Cyrus the Virus (John Malkovich), are locked down in cages along the walls. The really really bad guy, Garland `The Marietta Mangler' Greene (Steve Buscemi,) is trussed up like Hannibal the Cannibal and treated by the wary transport guards like a rabid rottweiler. Into this stew of degenerates add one Cameron Poe (Nicolas Cage,) ex-Army Ranger who is going home after serving a seven-year sentence for murder. Of course, Poe killed the man with his bare hands when the man, along with a couple other drunken thugs, jumped Poe and his wife in a parking lot. The ex-Ranger, as the sentencing judge informs us after Poe refuses to cop a dishonorable guilty plea, is a killing machine. So Poe is flying home a free man, to see for the first time his seven-year-old daughter. You see, his still-faithful wife was pregnant when the killing occurred, and Poe wouldn't allow his child to see her Daddy in jail. Poe is very anxious to see her today. It's his daughter's birthday and Poe's bringing her a birthday present, a bunny....
Don't let that touchy-feely stuff worry you too much. The movie needs a reason for Poe to be in a hurry to get home, and this one works well enough. The situation turns ugly before the plane leaves the runway.
CON AIR is an extremely engaging action movie. The actors are top-notch, including John Cusack as the US Marshal on the ground who believes in Poe and tries to resolve the situation without shooting the hijacked plane out of the air. The action is non-stop and the dialogue is sometimes startlingly funny. For instance, at one point one of the bad guys snarls threateningly at Poe "You know what I am?" "Ugly all day" is Poe's deadpan response. Add to that a lot of explosions and car crashes, snarly bad guys and good guys too, and a pace that's lifted from a Road Runner cartoon and CON AIR is a hoot. CON AIR is non-stop, totally improbable, over-the-top, and a whole lot of fun.
