Hilarious

A highly entertaining and original comedy using the cream of British comedy acting talent, who spent weeks improvising before arriving at the final script. At times the writer/director Debbie Isitt doesn't seem sure whether to make her characters comic or endearing, but usually succeeds in doing both. The 'Tennis Match' wedding is very funny, while the cast of non-dancers failing to achieve perfect symmetry in the Busby Berkeley sequence adds to the general hilarity.Martin Freeman gets better with each role, Alison Steadman turns in her usual immaculate performance, with Jimmy Carr making the most of his first big screen role. Look out for the spectacularly camp wedding planners, who nearly steal the show from bigger names. If you liked 'The Office' and 'Shaun of the Dead' you'll love this.

Three weddings and less laughs than a funeral

It's inevitable that when something becomes a massive hit, everybody and their uncle tries to emulate the idea. Personally, I blame Ricky Gervais's sit-com "The Office" for this improvised foray into the chaos and havoc that normally come with organising a wedding - something I am currently experiencing myself. Trouble is, this isn't anywhere nearly as funny or believable as the misadventures of David Brent, despite a large ensemble cast really trying their best."Confetti" is a spoof documentary following the efforts of Confetti magazine to run a competition for the most originally themed wedding of the year, the prize being a house and a front-cover photo-shoot. Trouble is, the three couples they have picked all raise issues with the competition's organiser Antoni (Jimmy Carr). For the Tennis-themed wedding, Josef and Isabelle (Steven Mangan and Meredith MacNeill) seem more obsessed with winning than actually getting married. For Matt and Sam (Martin Freeman and Jessica Stevenson), rehearsals for their Musical-themed wedding are marred by family disputes and choreographer trouble. And as for the Naturist wedding of Michael and Joanna (Robert Webb and Olivia Colman)... well, it appears as though Confetti magazine isn't prepared to have naked people on the front cover just yet. There is so much potential here for comedy gold that it's actually distressing that so much of it goes to waste. Because each scene is improvised there and then, the whole film feels messy and cluttered with dialogue that may be very funny but you missed it because someone else was talking. I also found it very hard to sympathise with anyone but the two camp wedding planners (Vincent Franklin and Jason Watkins) because a) they're much funnier than the others and b) they're much more likable, comedic stereotypes though they are. Nothing about "Confetti" feels genuine so you never really buy into the concept of these six nutters having the wedding of their dreams (and hopefully, nobody elses!). And to be honest, it's also obvious who is going to win the thing at the end which is a real shame because with our interest flagging, that was the only reason my Better Half and I kept watching.I don't think Spinal Tap have anything to worry about just yet but "Confetti" really could have been great instead of the plodding, wasted-opportunity that it is. It's slow, uninteresting and largely unfunny, though they are one or two gentles laughs to be found if you look hard enough. The actors all try their best but not having a script really separates the wheat from the chaff. Carr is razor-sharp and genuinely funny but Mangan betrays his comic career on TV by over-acting like his life depended on it. With a stronger supporting cast and tighter scripting, this could have been a real gem instead of the lump of coal that it is. "Confetti" drags its feet towards its conclusion and chances are, you would have lost interest in proceedings anyway. Do what me and the missus are going to do - fly to St Lucia and get married on a beach. Just pray that this isn't the in-flight movie!

Funny but Nothing Groundbreaking

'Confetti' is a funny and charming British mockumentary, but it sure as hell isn't on-par with mockumentaries like 'Spinal Tap' and 'Best in Show'. 'Confetti' is about a fashion bridal magazine called 'Confetti'. The two executives of the magazine (Jimmy Carr and Felicity Montagu) form a contest involving three different couples seeing who can put on the most original wedding. They choose Matt and Sam (Martin Freeman and Jessica Hynes) two tone-deaf theater enthusiasts whose theme is Broadway Musicals ; Josef and Isabelle (Stephen Mangan and Meredith MacNeill) two wannabe pro-tennis players whose theme is, no big surprise, tennis ; and Michael and Joanna (Robert Webb and Olivia Colman), two nudists whose theme is a "naturist" wedding. With the help of two flamboyantly gay wedding planners (Vincent Franklin and Jason Watkins), the three couples set on a trek to plan their weddings and perhaps win the Confetti magazine most original wedding contest.'Confetti' is an interesting concept, but disappointing in that they could have done so much more with it. The beginning is very funny and the ending sequence is flat-out hilarious, but there are so many in-between moments in 'Confetti' that aren't very funny and drag out. The actors are all very talented and funny, especially Vincent Franklin and Jason Watkins who are constant scene-stealers as the bitchy/gay wedding planners. Some of the time, I was confused in what I was watching -- a comedy or a drama. In some instances it becomes too sentimental to be funny, which is usually not a good route to take when making a mockumentary. Satire is a very hard thing to accomplish well in a movie, and 'Confetti' hits and misses, but luckily for the viewers it hits more than it misses. Grade: B-

If you like Christopher Guest...

There are few things so stressful in life as planning and executing a wedding. When that morass of charged emotions runs headlong into a contest held by Confetti Magazine for the "most original wedding," things are bound to get messy.Three couples are chosen for their unique wedding ideas: Matt (Martin Freeman) and Sam (Jessica Stevenson) want a Hollywood musical style, Josef (Stephen Mangan) and Isabelle (Meredith MacNeill) vie for a tennis theme, while Michael (Robert Webb) and Joanna (Olivia Colman) are "naturalists" and want their nuptials to be done in the nude. Trying to wrangle these three disparate couples into some kind of order are wedding planners Archie Heron (Vincent Franklin) and Gregory Hough (Jason Watkins) who seem to be channeling Corky St. Clair...In fact, shot as a documentary, this British ensemble piece is sure to be (justly) compared to Christopher Guest's mockumentaries (WAITING FOR GUFFMAN, A MIGHTY WIND, et cetera). Director Debbie Isitt does a fair job of aping Guest though she doesn't know when to go from documentary hand-held to a smoother choreographed camera and relies too much on non-diegetic music.Clearly, too, Isitt is aware of the weaknesses to the storyline. Two of the three couples are off screen for long stretches and our "villainous" couple (think Parker Posey and Michael Hitchcock from BEST IN SHOW) is mishandled in the finale. Even when they're not working with the best material (how many jokes about a nudist wedding can there be?) the cast does a terrific job keeping the film afloat. Besotted with faces familiar to anglophile TV/film viewers, CONFETTI is an amusing farce.

Touching, romantic and greatly hilarious - Richard Curtis is dead!

Saw Confetti today and was not sure what to expect, I knew it had a great cast from all over British comedy TV - Green Wing, Peep Show, Spaced, The Office and it had also been written by the brilliant Debbie Isitt but I'd heard mixed reviews so I went in with an open mind; I LOVED IT!!! I'm not a sucker for romantic comedies, or comedies in general, I don't tend to laugh out loud in them so I knew I was in for a good time when I'd laughed a great deal in the first five minutes. I won't over elaborate but basically its about a wedding magazine offering a prize of a new home to the most original wedding. It gets down to three; a sweet couple who want to do a musical-themed wedding, an egoistical, victory-obsessed couple who want to have a tennis-themed wedding and a naturist couple determined to have their wedding in the buff. Needless to say the cast are brilliant and the film is not only hilarious but also very touching at times. Go and see it! the PERFECT romantic comedy, another nail in Richard "One-trick-pony" Curtis' coffin.

Brilliant film and cast..........Must see!

I thought this film was great. I was laughing out loud in the cinema, and so was everyone else! The idea of the film is witty and the acting is brilliant. Great choice of cast. I love every character! The improvising acting is amazing. The jealousy from the couples is wicked and the film seems strangely realistic. Definitely one to watch (but not with grandma....surprising amount of nudity!) ... Ultimately a movie for adult humour (avoid showing the kids!) The end result for the three weddings is so funny and I guarantee you'll have a smile on your face by the end of the film! I'm definitely planning to buy Confetti - well worth the cash!

you're a silly sausage aren't you?

a mockumentary in the style of best in show, the film tells the story of the titular magazines troubles and there plans to make it the number one selling magazine. they decide to hold a competition, in which three couples are battling out to win a £500,000 house. the most original wedding will win the house. the magazine editor chooses three finalists.the first couple, tennis obsessives.the second, the lovers of the musicaland the third, the naturists.the film then countdowns the final weeks to the wedding by following the couples with the wedding planners, and there problems with there weddings, each other, their families, jealousy, and ensuring that you can be nude on your wedding day.the film concludes with all three weddings in one venue and the judges having to decide who wins..featuring some of the cream of British comedy (Carr, Freeman, Davis, Colman, Heap) who have been in the most elegant British sitcoms (the office, peep show, look around you, spaced, nighty night, the green wing), you would be forgiven that this would have been a block of pure comedy gold.ehile the film is funny in places, it just doesn't hit the high points it should, especially when considering the talent involved and then the fact that the majority of the spoken word we see on screen is wholly improvised.one of the main problems is the predictability of it all. we know from the start who is going to win and that kind of spoils the planning of the weddings and the problems they face.the characters are predictable two, especially the tennis couple who are pretentious and want to win it. whereas at the other end of the spectrum, the naturists are a sort of bohemian twosome who couldn't care less if they win or lose.the story is good and i wouldn't be surprised if it materialises into a reality based TV show somewhere down the line.the one saving grace is of course the wedding planners, who sparkle the screen when they are present. they add a bit of life to the film and manage to make it watchable.an enjoyable film, even if it is a big disappointment if you love the recent era of British comedy.a let down

Excellently thought out hilarious film

I found Confetti to be an excellent all round sarcastic funny film. It is a refreshingly new idea for a film. i can only compare it to lock stock and two smoking barrels in that it was a new style of English film that people were not sure about until they actually had seen it. After they had seen the film they could talk about nothing else. This will be a master film for others to copy the idea and i'm sure they will. As with all films the ending is the best but actually not getting bored before you get there is the key and with all the funny parts in this film you sure don't get bored. This film will bring out a number of emotions out in all who watch it from extreme laughter to overwhelming tears. so i would recommend you all watch this film but don't forget the hankies.

All films should be done without a script!

A cacophony of British comedy actors all improvising their way through each scene, what more could you ask for? The reality of all the reactions were amplified due to the characterisation the actors adorned for their parts. Of course the subtlety of British humour is the driving force behind the production, so... BEWARE Americans! YOU MAY NOT UNDERSTAND IT! It's great, then again, name a film with a naked man on a bike which isn't.

Enjoyable and hilarious

This film is a simulated documentary about three couples participating a contest to make an unusual and memorable wedding. What I really liked this film is that it looked very spontaneous and real. It was intense, and things happened every second. It was hilarious that the wedding planners seemed to do everything they can to spoil the weddings. Their simulated campness was also remarkable and believable. The stress of organising a marriage was also well portrayed, and I felt for them completely. My favourite scene was when Martin Freeman was in the tub, and suddenly the two wedding planners come in. Martin Freeman then tried to get as much bubble over his bits as possible. It was so funny!

30 minutes stretched to 2 hours

The weddings in the end were quite entertaining , but the journey to them was painful. A mixture of comedy actors from channel 4 and BBC2 produced another British comedy with out any laughs. (See 'Shaun of the dead'). What must have appeared like a good idea on paper , especially after the success of sitcoms like 'The office', produce a bore of a film that seemed to go on forever. The acting generally was poor and the script if there was one totally unfunny. Quite frankly I could have left after 10 minutes , and I wish I had. What is happening to the British film industry , every time I go to see the latest offering I come away very disappointed. This was easily the worst . I didn't think anything could have been as awful as 'Shaun of the dead' but this was. 'About a Boy' was the last decent comedy to come from this country.

Sometimes UK gives us something to be really happy about. Oi, this is it! See it! It's pretty embarrassing, sad AND both flower powery and happy! No gunshots, no drama, no death but a very interesting take on life and what it means to be happy with your choices. That's what I got anyway. :P ONE LOVE! :) The editing is generally clean, the picture quality is very good and it contains nudity :P On a side note, I loved Matthew Freeman is this movie. He's very cute and.. I'd love to say more but spoilers ahead! For short, if you like men carrying a tune without breaking the piano do see it :) What I can recommend is this: if you generally watch action/ thriller/ horror but want a break from these, do watch it.

Green Wing's love child

posted on 22 Oct 2008

*Mild Spoilers*Confetti was like an extended episode of Green Wing. With less laughs. Its about 3 couples competing for a dream wedding & mag cover shoot. (Oh, and a house) One couple want a musical wedding (musical ball number - some bloke out of The Office) One couple want a tennis-theme for their nuptials ( tennis balls everywhere - some bloke out of Green Wing) and the last couple want a naturist event (balls everywhere! - some bloke out of Peep Show)It plays a bit like The Office as a fly-on-the-wall docu-soap & its all improv; it has its moments, but these are few... Jimmy Carr is wasted but Steve Mangan is amazing as a has-been tennis star jealous of his soon-to-be's Spanish (lothario in his mind)tennis coach. There's a great scene where they have a fight on a tennis court - Steve runs off apparently to 'run it off' then he charges back in and piles into the coach once more. (Very Guy-like but much more physical!) Great supporting cast including Mark Heap and Olivia Colman giving it some Green Wing polish! I REALLY wanted to love this film; guess the wedding's off...

Grounds for divorce

"Marriage is a fierce battle before which the two partners ask heaven for its blessing, because loving each other is the most audacious of enterprises; the battle is not slow to start, and victory, that is to say freedom, goes to the cleverest." BalzacAs an enduring Anglophile, I am prone to like most Brit culture, with a special place for the old Ealing Studios comedies, which harbored English reserve behind some silly but funny scenarios. The new comedy Confetti doesn't meet Ealing standards or my benign expectations no matter how much it would like to capture the quirky comedy of the non-Ealing Waiting for Guffman, whose town anniversary planner, Corky St. Clair, is much more amusing than the fey, quarrelsome planners in Confetti. The premise, three engaged couples vie for prizes from the mag Confetti, including a new million dollar house, for the most creative wedding ceremony. So far so good. One couple uses a tennis motif, the second nudist, and the third Hollywood musical. When they actually perform these bizarre ceremonies, the film is entertaining; until then it is almost painful to watch the couples struggle with wedding planners and creative consultants and well meaning but imbecilic relatives.More important than these humorless shenanigans before the ceremonies is the whole issue of who controls a wedding and is it worth the effort and money anyway. The horror stories of prenuptial preps are well known, not unlike the competition earlier in Keeping Up with the Steins (albeit bar mitzvahs). In Confetti the American Idol-like environment of tough tongued judges and spoil-sport contestants underlies the competition and the spectacle, endangering the simplicity of saying "I do" and making it stick for a lifetime. The Busby Berkeley sequence, with old and young doing their best to imitate a precision chorus line, is visually fun and a fair embodiment of the best "going-to-the-chapel" spirit. The tennis sequence rates highly for ingenious paralleling of language with a wedding ("love," "match," etc.) In the style of Mike Leigh, the film had no script. Because director Debbie Isitt needed Leigh's genius to pull that off with her actors, Confetti is grounds for divorce.

A Great British Movie - A Must See Treat

posted on 24 Jul 2008

Director Debbie Isitt's new film is a real contender for the title of best British comedy. Conceived by the director following her experiences with her own sisters wedding, and her love for reality TV shows like 'X-Factor', the cast improvised the whole experience as it was captured in true documentary style.Filmed in sequence over the course of 2 months and edited down from over 150 hours of footage, the story revolves around three couples trying to win a bridal magazine contest for "Most Original Wedding of the Year." The cast are incredibly convincing, Martin Freeman (The Office), Jessica Stevenson (Spaced), Robert Webb and Olivia Colman (Peep Show), Stephen Mangan (Green Wing), Meredith MacNeill (Man Stroke Woman), and Jimmy Carr in his first feature performance, all leave previous TV personas behind and make you believe in their characters. Vincent Franklin and Jason Watkins as ace wedding planners Heron and Hough nearly steal the show, with subtly played roles that have a real emotional impact. Ably supported by Ron Cook and Alison Steadman, this film has a British edge but is accessible to anyone, especially those who have ever attended a real wedding. This film deserves to be a real success and the director is a talent to be watched, if you like this I suggest you look out for her earlier feature Nasty Neighbours.Debbie Isitt has constructed a film that is both funny and touching, and I recommend that you seek it out on its UK cinema release on May 5th.

Queer eye for the straight couple

"Confetti" is a sort of mockumentary that tries to do what Christopher Guest has been doing for years with better results. Director Debbie Isitt shows she has the know how to present her mildly funny comedy that involves a contest sponsored by a magazine with three finalist couples, one of whom will win the prize and the exposure such events usually bring. After the three couples are selected, the finalist are the couple that want to have the Hollywood musical themed wedding. The second couple elects to see a tennis themed ceremony and finally, there are the nudists, who insists they want to be married in the buff.Confetti, the magazine, engages a pair of gay wedding planners to put some sense into this enterprise. Little do Archie and Gregory realize what they are about to get into. Archie and Gregory are a gay duo that love to dress alike and they have to deal with all the drama behind the scenes in the contest.Ms. Isitt gets some good results out of the large cast. Best of all are Vincent Franklin and Jason Watkins, the wedding planners, without a doubt. These two are fun to watch at all times. Martin Freeman has some good moments as Matt. Stephen Mangan and Meredith McNeill are seen as the tennis couple. Robert Webb and Olivia Colman play the nudists. The fun finale compensates for some dull moments within the film. Let's hope Ms. Isitt comes out with a funnier picture on her next project.

An enjoyable film, refreshingly free of cynicism

Three young couples vie to win a magazine contest by holding their 'themed' weddings in public, with the winners being awarded a first prize of a brand new home. Step forward the three couples: nudists Michael and Joanna; tennis-mad Josef and Meredith, and Hollywood musical fans Matt and Samantha. The fun comes for us as as viewers as we join the fly-on the wall documentary team that follows all three couples as the wedding organisers and their respective families try to get the weddings together in time for the contest. This is a showcase of modern British comedy talent. Jimmy Carr, Felicity Montagu, Stephen Mangan, Martin Freeman, Jessica Stevenson and Alison Steadman all do their bit. But the real stars are the lesser known Vincent Franklin and Jason Watkins as the camp wedding organisers who won't let anything get in the way of the couples' dream day. This is an enjoyable little film, with a nice basic idea, littered with lots of good performances. It is 'smile' humour, rather than 'laugh out loud' stuff. But the smiles are here a-plenty. It is also surprisingly moving at times as well, and refreshingly free of cynicism. If at times you doubt the sincerity of some of those involved, the ending leaves you on a high.'Confetti' is not brilliant or ground-breaking, but it will make you smile. And that's not such a bad recommendation, is it?

Hilarious example of Brit Comedy at it's best!

The movie is about 3 couples who are battling it out for the most original wedding of the year. Filmed in a documentary style this movie is absolutely hilarious and a credit to British film-making. The 3 couples who are the focus of the film couldn't be more different with a couple living at home with her Mum, a couple who are very competitive tennis players and a couple who are naturalists (aka nudists!).The film, aside from being hilarious, the whole cinema was in fits throughout most of it, really touched on some serious topics connected with relationships and especially marriage...the interfering 'good intentioned' family, jealousy, public perceptions of the norm...most of all the film reinforced what is important.I was in two-minds about this film, I hadn't been convinced by the trailers I had seen and the reviews I had read hadn't convinced me. In all honesty if the tickets for tonight hadn't been free I wouldn't have gone. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The story, despite it's documentary style, was believable, the acting credible and the fluency of the stories spot on! If you enjoy Brit comedy especially along the lines of The Office, Spaced and Shaun of the Dead then this is a definite film for you!

quite funny but not very strong script

posted on 04 Mar 2008

Confetti is a film about a wedding magazine that holds a contest for the best original wedding. The film follows the wedding planners and the three couples (tennis players, musical lovers, nudists) that have been chosen to participate in the contest. The film follows the style of 'Best In Show', a film about a dog show and the owners of the dogs who will appear in the show. 'Confetti' does have some funny moments, but it does not come even close to being as good as 'Best In Show', or an excellent film, for that matter. The script was predictable, and despite a several funny instances (again, predictable), this film had little going for it. The film failed to hit a peak of laughter; there were several small incidents that were humorous, but it failed to achieve any large-scale comical incidents. The acting was not done well either, and the script got dull a lot of the time, but the humor did keep it from failing. Overall, 'Confetti' could have been a better film because it did have some good ideas; some of the characters could have been played upon more and their stories expanded upon. It certainly could have gone into much more detail with any of the couples, the panel of judges/magazine staff, and the wedding planners; doing this would have made a better film, if it was done correctly. There also could have been more peak in conflict or in the main event, but maybe this was limited to keep the story short or because the humor was too much of the same had the action been slower. Not a great film by any means, but 'Confetti' is fairly good if you are looking to share a few laughs with friends.

I had some hope held out for this comedy, on the face of it a surreal satire on TV makeover shows. It doesn't work out particularly well, although it's sabotaged almost form the start by the insipid Jimmy Carr, whose character (improvised, as most of the roles are) makes tart, self- conscious gags and then proceeds to tongue-lash everybody else. I managed 30 mins of this film in which time I'd seen some of the better small- screen sketch faces from British television go through their moves. Stephen Mangan is the pick of the bunch (Carr could learn some lessons from him about being a boo-him-from-the-stalls baddie) and it's always a surreptitious delight to see Felicity Montague. Even if I hadn't determined on an early night I would have been put off by the half-hearted Gilbert & George-a-likes which just showed the limits of Debbie Isitt's imagination. 2/10
