A remake that in many ways is better than the original
posted on 07 Feb 2009Pound for pound, the best movie Joel Schumacher has ever directed. Perhaps, he should remake more French flicks. Featuring fine performances by Ted Danson, Isabella Rossellini, and Sean Young in what may be her best role. Lloyd Bridges and Keith Coogan, however, are the standouts, playing Danson's father and son, respectively. The only part of Cousin, Cousine I liked better was William Petersen's character. In the French version he is more bitter, self deprecating, funny, and sympathetic.
An absolutely lovely movie
posted on 17 Oct 2008I have watched this movie a dozen times, and I never tire of it. It is just a beautiful love story and Isabella R. and Ted Danson have wonderful chemistry. It is one of those movies where you laugh and cry and it leaves you feeling better for having seen it. The soundtrack alone is worth watching the movie. One of my all time favorites.
Cousins
posted on 16 Sep 2008Well made American rendition of the 1975 French farce, "Cousin-cousine," with Danson and the enchanting Rosselini playing cousins by marriage who meet at a wedding, develop a relationship and then fall in love. Wonderful performances from Lloyd Bridges and Norma Alejandro help move this glorious film along that glows with humor, warmth and the sheer joy of life.
Adultery never looked so romantic
posted on 30 Jul 2008COUSINS (1989) *** Ted Danson, Isabella Rossellini, Sean Young, William Petersen, Lloyd Bridges, Keith Coogan, Norma Aleandro. Entertaining tale of adultery among married relatives and really about true love appearing in the least likely of places. Warm and romantic with some sly observations of marriage and infidelity. Danson is charming and Rossellini radiantly beguiling. Beautiful music score by Angelo Badalamenti. Bridges and Coogan together are a riot. American remake of French flick "Cousine, Cousine".
Coveting cousins
posted on 25 Jul 2008Cousins is the most romantic movie in my collection. It didn't aim to be great art, but it did manage to be a touching story. It's a remake of a French film but I don't think it suffers by the comparison. Ted Danson and Isabella Rossellini star in the film as the two lovers, Larry and Maria. Unfortunately they are both married, to other people.
The two of them are thrown together during a series of weddings and funerals and they share a bond of adultery. Not their own, but their spouses. At first the responsibility each of them feels toward their respective families, prevents them from taking their attraction for each other any further. As a result we are treated to a bitter sweet suspense. Harry and Maria, whilst not consummating their relationship, use the situation to gain a subtle retribution on their partners.
In addition to the central love story there are lots of side plots. These conspire to create more weddings and funerals than in any other film I have seen. Of course this is the perfect excuse to throw our controversial couple together again and again. I also enjoy watching Larry's son and Father interact. Both are interesting characters.
Along with the subplots, there are a host of supporting characters who do a lot to make the story more real. Larry's father and son are both terrific and the illicit lovers who start it all are wonderfully shallow. Here we see the true 80's love affair; hedonistic and almost unrepenting.
Cousins renews your faith in human nature. It recharges the batteries of your romance and makes you feel like doing something wonderful for your special loved ones. If you are tired of watching films where sex seems to be used as a weapon between enemies, then give this film another look.
One of my all time favorites...
posted on 26 Mar 2008This picture has all the elements you need for a great romantic movie.
Mostly it will make you laugh and tug at your heart strings. You really start to feel for Larry (Danson) and Maria (Rossellini). Larry and his wife Tish (Young) care for each other but aren't in love, and Maria and her husband Tom (Petersen) seemed to be trapped together because they have a young daughter. The story gets started when, at the wedding reception of Maria's mother Edie (Aleandro), Tish and Tom sneak off and fool around together. In the mean time back at the reception, Larry and Maria meet and begin talking, and when their spouses show up together, are both suspicious, but say nothing. Then, the next day, Maria goes to visit Larry to get his opinion of what happened the day before. From there, we get to go on their journey as they become friends and then, more than friends. And there's quite a bit that will make you happy and sad along the way. This is a great movie for a lazy Saturday afternoon...
Joel Schumacher's worst misfire
posted on 04 Dec 2007While I have great respect for the director of St. Elmo's Fire and A Time to Kill, this box-office failure is truly a weak, meandering melodrama that does not deserve to be watched. While the plot may not be the worst part of the film, the saccharine aloofness with which the subject matter is treated is enough to bore and disappoint anyone who has seen at least one good romantic comedy in his or her life. The last five minutes of the movie may be redeemed somewhat by a lyrical musical score and a few beautiful scenes in Schumacher's usual style; however, you are still most likely to leave the room in an empty mood of deep disappointment. If you don't find The Lost Boys, Batman & Robin and 8mm sufficient proof that even the creator of some essential movies of the last two decades can have his dark hours, see this movie, and it is almost guaranteed that you'll change your mind. Otherwise, watch out and see Falling Down instead.

posted on 29 Apr 2007This is a fun movie. It was great to see a young Wm Peterson, quite different from Grishom from CSI. Of course the story line of the two main characters was good. The web we weave while trying to deceive, they only wanted to make there partners believe they were having an affair to get even, and found themselves becoming friends, and of course falling in love, and of course everyone knew because it was always evident at the large family weddings they had to attend. Very intertwined, funny, romantic, just a good easy movie to watch.
This one still makes me cry
posted on 14 Jan 2007I have this on VHS but no VHS player anymore! It was time to get the DVD version. I adore this movie about love, sacrifice, and karma. It slowly grew on me over time. I realized one day that every time I see it, I feel good inside, and I still cry at the happy ending. In a world filled will hourly reminders of hatred and sadness, I need the occasional escape into a world where true love really does win, and jerks get what they deserve in the end. The performances are spot on, and the cinematography is wonderful. If a romantic comedy can be considered "elegant," then this one is. Bravo.
A diamond in a rhinestone genre
posted on 26 Dec 2006"Cousins", a pleasing knock-off of Oscar nominated French "Cousin, Cousine", tells of a man who has an affair with another woman while their partners are doing the same; concomitant relationships, one carnal and the other romantic. Full of quirky Euro-Am ethnic family members, this lively and sweet blast from the past is a light-hearted blend of sentimental, romantic, funny, and poignant moments well worth a first look or revisit.
Pure Romance!!
posted on 06 Nov 2006What can I say about this movie except that Isabella and Ted create real chemistry as two people who have scored a big zero with love in their lives and suddenly find "true love" with each other! It is so much fun to watch their relationship develop from two people who are hurt by their significant others to a couple who find they are madly in love. Worth watching over and over again!
Laughed, cried, and have seen it again and again and AGAIN!!
posted on 08 Aug 2006This movie is exactly what I need when I'm ho-humming about what video to watch. It's worked every time. If you like 'Sliding Doors' and 'Sense&Sensibility' (two of my other favorites) try this, you'll probably enjoy it. There are lots of layers to this one too. Ted Danson does an incredible acting job, though it may take a repeat viewing to kick the habit of seeing him as "Sam." Isabella Rosellini personifies beauty (as always)and effectively portrays an unhappy but loyal-'til-the-end wife. And Lloyd Bridges is fantastic, cast as Danson's father. This film is all about extended families, and marriages, and the intertwined inner-workings of the two. Sean Young's outfits are a little cheesy, but fit her character. And at times the film is loudly representative of the 1980's. But it's largely a feel-good movie where what you want to have happen happens and what you don't want to have happen only happens a little.
You've got one life-- you can make it chicken salad, or chicken....
posted on 17 Mar 2006Lloyd Bridges is BRILLIANTLY hilarious in this movie. MAN he is so funny. It is his best next to Airplane.
Everyone else in it is fabulous as well. It is a really interesting love story and the characters have such great chemistry in it. It takes you through a broad range of reactions to many of the characters. Not many movies do that--it is really cool.
It's also shot in beautiful British Columbia in the summer and they do such a great job of incorporating that scenery into the movie.
And Sean Young is great in it too.
A must-see.

This is my ALL-TIME favorite movie!!!
posted on 28 Jun 2009You wouldn't think that Ted Danson would translate well to the big screen, but he is magical in the role of Larry Kozinski. Isabella Rossellini is her usual beautiful, understated, elegant self in the role of Maria. When the two are on screen together, the sparks fly. Sean Young, Norma Aleandro, Lloyd Bridges, Keith Coogan, and William Petersen round out an excellent ensemble. The real star of this picture is the soundtrack. Every time the theme song is played, I cry and cry. It is so beautiful. I could watch this movie every day and find something new every time I watch it. This movie is sly, sophisticated, funny, sad, and very, very real. If you haven't seen it yet, you have missed a gem. It is definitely a must-see.
