"I guess there's no such thing as safe sex with a werewolf."

posted on 30 Aug 2009

~Spoiler~ It really is as bad as they say. I went in to Cursed with some hopes that Wes Craven would return to his post Scream days and had no such luck. I thought Craven couldn't sink any lower than Vampire in Brooklyn. He did just that with Werewolf in Hollywood. Oops, I mean Cursed. This movie is a bomb, it's a turkey. It's the cinematic equivalent of poop and it doesn't know if it wants to be a comedy or a horror picture. Craven has proved that he can work in many different facets of horror. He can do intense horror (Last House on the Left, The Hills Have Eyes). He can do serious horror (The Serpent and the Rainbow, New Nightmare). And he can do horror/comedies (Shocker, The People Under the Stairs). But Cursed is none of those. It's tone is just so uneven. It starts off well enough with a jaw dropping death scene and stays focused for a long while. Then, out of nowhere we get the goofiest wrestling scene of all time and the film never recovers. It actually gets worse. There's a myriad of "subtle" gay jokes, Scott Baio plays Scott Baio (poorly I might add, ha!), and the werewolf actually gives the police the finger. Unforgivably stupid. We all know the sordid history behind the movie. How it was basically filmed twice with two different casts and the studio just wouldn't leave it alone. The film was in fact "cursed." But I in no way forgive anyone involved in the making of this movie. Despite naysayers, Scream was actually a decent movie and Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson made a good team for a short while. But I hope they never pair again. The cast includes many familiar faces that should all be ashamed of themselves.

You cant be serious!

I hope I am not alone when I say, this film should have never been made! I expected a whole lot more coming from Wes Craven... The acting and direction were very, very poor. I couldn't figure out if this was a comedy or a wanna be horror film?? I would seriously suggest that nobody watch this film as you will waste 110 minutes of your life, seriously!! You should all consider yourselves warned and watch at your own risk. Of course this is only my opinion and you all may disagree. I am really doubting that as you will soon find out for yourself. I really hope Wes would stop making horror or wanna be horror movies as he has really lost it.

Movie Schitzo's Review of "Cursed"

posted on 16 Aug 2009

Wes Craven and Kevin WIlliamson can do great things. Wes Craven has done such great films as "Red Eye" and "A Nightmare on Elm Street". Kevin Williamson has also done some good work with "I Know what you did Last Summer" and TV's Dawson's Creek". But together they created a movie that rejuvenated the horror genre "Scream". So it's no doubt that they7 would get together again to make another horror film, but this time circling werewolves? Who'd a thunk that? Apparentley them. The outcome of all their work is "Cursed", a horror comedy that works bad on the first level, but great on the second level. Not very scary, but still entertaining, "Cursed" begins with a car crash and we meet Ellie (Christina Ricci) and her brother Jimmy (Jesse Eisenburg) who are attacked by a beast and slowly are becoming werewolves. The only way to break the curse apparently is to kill the one who started it. So, the hunt begins. Ellie works for The Craig Kilborne Shoe and Scott Baio is an upcoming new guest. Ellie also has a boyfriend who is in show business named Jake (Joshua Jackson) who has a secret of his own. The showbiz aspect of the movie is very interesting and entertaining but the outcome of the actual creature is very poorly done and very sloppy. Overall a very interesting if not poor horror horror film that is sure to have at least one audience.2 1/2 out of 4 stars

Flawed but fun......

"Cursed" is by no means is a greatly written werewolf movie. The film itself is definitely flawed throughout yet it manages to squeak by as pretty fun, if not somewhat silly. The cast itself is quite an ensemble, which is probably the best part of "Cursed" as a whole.

The story centers around two siblings, Ellie & Jimmy (Christina Ricci, Jesse Eisenberg) who are inexplicably bitten /scratched by a werewolf after a car accident on the infamous Mullholland Dr. While Jimmy realizes early on that his senses are heightened and that his body is changing, Ellie is a little less quick to believe that she is becoming "Cursed" herself. Jimmy tries to tell her, but the whole thing sounds too crazy to her; and after all, neither of them really got a good look at the whatever is was that attacked them the night of the accident.

Jesse begins to also realize that something is still out there, and that the only way that he can avoid the transformation taking place with himself is to kill the head wolf. The movie turns into a "who is it" early on, and is fairly predictable. Still, Cursed has enough players to keep you guessing throughout its entirety. With plenty of foolish and funny scenes, Cursed manages to entertain.

It's not Shakespeare, and it's really not that scary of a movie either.

It is quite amusing as a comedy though, and definitely worth a viewing if you need a good laugh. It never manages to take itself too seriously, and this review recommends doing the same when watching it. ;-)

Alright Movie

This movie is good, but some stuff ruins the legend of the werewolves that we all grown up with. Some of the themes are stupid and others could better. And some of the acting is horrible. But on a rainy day this is a good movie to watch and make fun of it. That what it does makes fun of the werewolf legend and past films. Wes Craven's direction is good but this is my least favorite of his movies. So watch if you want. I enjoyed it but I think it could be better. Alot better. Can't wait for Red Eye though. It looks like classic Craven and will be fun.

Bad Movie, but meh, I liked it

Despite the easy to guess story line, and odd moments of bad acting.. I enjoyed watching this movie. It was more for entertainment value. The concept of the movie was really good, and I really enjoyed some of the effects. I really hate werewolf movies where the werewolf changes off camera. One thing I did not like was the fact the wolf costume really didn't look good. Wes Craven could of taken a lesson from Van Helsing or Underworld. lol, the middle finger scene was one of the best scenes. I also think the Gypsy could have gotten 1. more background 2. more story. Like come on I think she was important to the story. Although the younger son scene at the gym was wicked :) white boys can jump.all in all, I enjoyed it for entertainment. lol, scare factor? what scare factor!

Werewolves in Hollywood

Wes Craven gave the teenage horror movie a new lease of life with his brilliant "scream" trilogy .He did not do the same with the vampire flick (the characters are youngsters or young people)which borrows lots of its components from many works of the past.A good example is given by the young brother who takes his revenge like De Palma's Carrie. The human/beast metamorphosis has been showed and showed and showed so often it is no longer exciting (see "a werewolf in London" "howling" "cat people" and more).Too bad Wes Craven has almost lost his sense of black humor he displayed so masterfully in his trilogy:this script is totally humorless, with the exceptions of one or two scenes:for instance, the breakfast when the sister and the brother are eating raw meat as if it were cornflakes or toasts ;or this line when the brother says to the girl in her car that it might explode.

You'll curse yourself for wasting your time on this dumb werewolf movie.

CURSED is another really dumb horror movie, this time focusing on werewolves. Of course, it's hard to tell if the movie is supposed to be a campy, sarcastic film like Scream or a true horror movie. Although it offers funny touches like a Scott Baio cameo, it's not clever and biting enough to be a send-up of horror movies, but it's not scary enough to be a horror movie, either. Basically, it's a just a mess of a movie -- that's the best that can be said about it.

Here's the premise: Twenty-something Ellie (Christina Ricci) and her teen brother Jimmy get into a car accident on a dark, winding road. They try to free the other driver of the car (Shannon Elizabeth), only to see her get dragged away by a large wolf. Ellie and Jimmy get scratched by the wolf, but don't think anything of it right away. After all, Ellie is focused on work and her new boyfriend Jake (Joshua Jackson) and Jimmy is busy trying to make it through the horrors of high school, where he is the victim of some bullying boys from the wrestling team. But soon tell-tale signs that Ellie and Jimmy were infected by a werewolf start emerging, and the siblings find themselves fighting the urge to go to the dark side.

The movie, which was originally rated R, was reshot and then edited down to become a PG-13. It appears that a sensible plot and any kind of character development were edited out as well (what happened to Ellie and Jimmy's parents, by the way?). And they must have run out of money before they hired the special effects team, because the computer-generated werewolves look fake and decidedly not scary. They would have been better off not showing the werewolves at all, because then the anticipation of seeing the beasts would create some real interest and suspense.

Bottom line: If teens are looking for some real thrills, they're better off seeing a movie like The Ring.

Ellie and Jimmy, driving late at night in the Hollywood hills, strike an animal and then crash into another car, which goes tumbling down the embankment. After freeing the woman inside, the trio is attacked by something that ultimately slices the woman in half and bites both Elly and Jimmy. Later, they notice their senses have been supersized and they've gotten stronger. They might be ... Cursed.Cursed is a good tale of Bad Things happening to Goodish People. It's directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson, so expectations that this would be a cut above your standard teenagers-in-peril slasher pic were well founded. However, dialog that's meant to be ironic comes off as uninspiring and third rate. Craven's overall direction of the film is adequate, though, lending an appropriate dose of spooky atmosphere.Christinia Ricci plays Ellie, the protagonist in the film, as she juggles boy troubles, job troubles (she works on the Craig Kilborn show), and lycanthropic troubles. She's a disbeliever at first, but naturally she has her younger brother Jimmy (Jesse Eisenberg) to believe the hell out of the werewolf angle, especially since he's the proverbial nerd without friends of any shape, save Zipper the dog.Ricci is quite good, as usual, although Eisenberg and all the other youthful thespians in the cast (such as the terminally wooden Joshua Jackson) shamefully overact, although they're somewhat restricted by the script. Williamson likes to deal in stereotypes, as he showed in the Scream movies, and most of the characters are so written in Cursed. Ellie is an exception, but the others are so broadly drawn that when they do something somewhat unexpected, you think it's a come on for something else that really is expected. You might stop and ask yourself questions along the way, such as why would anyone have an opening to a horror memorabilia museum, let alone Lance Bass? Okay, maybe that one answers itself somewhat. And how come the duo - bitten by a werewolf, purportedly - sometimes have powers and sometimes don't? Oh, wait, that's also answered: The powers come and go. Got it.Cursed is a decent film that should have been much better, given its architects. Ricci, at least, gives a nuanced and flavorful performance as the strong female lead. You'll probably laugh when you're not intended to, but if that's your game, this one might be for you.

Could have been better

Christina Ricci's talent was wasted on this movie, the gore was kept low and the werewolf was hilarious. But I did have a good time watching it. Several moments were just hilarious but I'm glad I waited for the rental release.

Bizarre

This film was not what I expected at all. I thought it would be like the Ring, or something, from the poster. I hadn't seen any trailers, I just turned up at the cinema and picked the closest film.I found it absolutely hilarious, especially the bit where Bo tells Jimmy he's gay, and Jimmy says, "Oh, I'm a werewolf, I have enhanced sexual magnetism" and Bo is like, "Yeah. OK then." Anyway, this was a really silly film. Too much time was focused on randomers who died straight away, and the part where Bo confesses his gayness, I thought it was some kind of trick to make Jimmy confess, because it was so sarcastic. And why on earth did they suddenly become best friends, apart from the dog tried to eat them? The best bit is when Michael Rosenbaum gets hoiked out of shot by the werewolf. I nearly died laughing. Other people in the cinema did not appreciate.Christina Ricci looked really good in this film. Her forehead didn't even look that big. I didn't really get the Joshua Jackson character though. "I love her so much, I won't let you kill her" "OK, now she has to die".

Werewolves, support this film!

posted on 06 Jul 2009

Well, as I am indeed an actual werewolf, I liked this movie. I found it to treat the subject of werewolves with respect, while maintaining the dignity and resoursfulness of the prey (Ricci and her onscreen brother). I especially liked the car scene where the girl is cut in half, it was very surreal and attention grabbing. The whole silver thing is a bit outdated, since everyone knows we can only be killed by fire or decapitation, but all in all, not a bad attempt by you humans. Good luck actually using anything in this movie to protect you from an actual werewolf though, lol

So So - maybe ok

I didn't despise this movie as much as some people did, but it deffinitly could have been way better. Not Wes Craven's best work. More gore please!

...not bad....not great.....

....i liked christina ricci,as well as the rest of the cast....the big problem here is the cgi werewolf effects....in 1980 they made "THE HOWLING"....the effects were done by rob bottin....i have NEVER seen a werewolf movie IMPROVE on those effects!!!...and this was before they used cgi effects!..."DOG SOLDERS" came close, and is excellent as well....the werewolf in this movie at times looked good, but other times looked fake...overall it was a fun "B" movie.....it could have been better...

thought it would be bloody scary movie

stars had free preview and cursed was on so i decided to watch it i have to say the movie didn't live to the other great werewolf flicks it was kinda one of those movies that the trailer was better than the actual movie the story was really in some parts hard to understand and their were no really shocking points that were really no bad dreams caused in this movie so if you like mystery movies with a some scary moments see the pg-13 version but if you want to see a bloody gory absolutely out of your mind scary movie see the unrated version but i my opinion if a movie needed a unrated version it was really good on its on its not the best horror movie but still a good movie about a 4 out of 10

I Was Cursed...

posted on 29 Jun 2009

I already lost 2 hours of my life watching this film. So, I will go straight to the point and tell you what I didn't like about it (basically, everything) 1. The worst performance of Christina Ricci's career. Even Mya and Shannon Elizabeth were better, and that's saying something.2. A very poor attempt at being a comedy. In one scene, a werewolf gives the middle finger to one of his victims. I admit it, I laughed. I laughed at how silly the whole thing was.3. A ridiculous subplot about homosexuality. A gay student says to a werewolf "we both have the same problem". Yeah, right.4. A PG-13 rating. So, whenever a werewolf is about to tear apart someone, the camera cuts and we hear a loud BOOM. So, the flick ended up being a horror film without a single scare.5. I can't even describe how awful the dialog said. "Stop reading about werewolves, and go download a porno or something". No kidding.6. Probably one of the worst twist endings of all time. And the film couldn't be more predictable.7. Horrendous CGI.So, why did I give Cursed a 2 instead of a 1? Like I said, the whole thing is so silly, it's amusing. And I think the story had some potential. So, I definitely wouldn't recommend Cursed. If you're a fan of werewolf movies, you can watch An American Werewolf in London or Wolf instead. And if you're into Wes Craven, see Scream or Nightmare on Elm Street, and I'm sure you'll have a better time.

Odd

Not Scary, but Corny. Also Very Predictable. It's obvious from the beginning what's gonna happen, the fact that Jake Is A Werewolf, the fact that Bo is a homosexual, Everything.

not Horror. Fluff. Pah!
Entertaining, though.

The end bit with Jake was unneccessary.

Promising Plot, Good Main Cast, Terrible Movie

The Joe Cool Review For Cursed(2005)Starring: Christina Ricci as Ellie, Jesse Eisenberg as Jimmy, and Joshua Jackson as JakePlot: Ellie and Jimmy are driving along the road in LA and they hit something, which causes another car nearby to crash. When they check on the victim, they are all attacked by a huge animal. Jimmy suspects it to be a werewolf, especially when they start having changes, and eating raw meat without thinking twice. Meanwhile the werewolf that attacked them is out dining on the LA residents and looking for them. But who could it be? Openers: From the people who brought you the overrated Scream, comes a werewolf movie! There were lots of stories about this film as it's been in production for a long time prior to it's release, where it experienced every problem imaginable. So naturally I expected a few problems when I went to watch it, because with every thing it went through it couldn't come out completely unscathed. But I watched it anyway, full of hope that maybe they could pull off an enjoyable werewolf movie, as I haven't seen one in a long time. How does it do?The Good: Well first off this movie has a credible main cast, that's for sure. Without them I'd have probably just given up on this before it got going. Christina Ricci is very talented and very attractive. She carried herself well. Jesse Eisenberg earned himself a new fan because he is just awesome here as the dorky brother. Felt completely sympathy for the dude and so when he had werewolf problems on top of it I just wanted him to get out okay. Joshua Jackson was limited for most of the movie but when he is on-screen he does well. This movie also has very copious amounts of gore thrown in. Lots of nasty bites, including one that takes a chunk out of someone's neck, spewing blood everywhere. There's also some decapitations, people ripped in half and someone's brains oozing from a wound in their head. So if you're into gore, you definitely get your kicks here. The Bad: "Meanwhile the werewolf that attacked them is out dining on the LA residents and looking for them. But who could it be?" Everybody's a suspect! Yes it's a whodunit. Just like Scream. It's Scream with Werewolves people. Talk about a total rehash. We even get our horror movie references in to really make it that way. Not as blatant but still. I was expecting David Arquette and Neve Campbell to pop in for a cameo. Apparently that's not far from the truth as Skeet Ulrich(who played Billy in Scream, keep up people) was originally written in. Also, the entire movie felt thrown together and held that way with crazy glue. Of course that can be blamed on the production beforehand as everything fell apart several times. But you'd think they would fix some things before releasing this to the public. Also, I didn't like the entire supporting cast. You read that right. Apart from the three main stars, everyone on the supporting cast annoyed me to no end. Shannon Elizabeth, I'm looking at YOU. Speaking of which, why did she get included with top billing when she really doesn't do much? Just a personal peeve with that one.The Ugly: Those werewolves. For the love of God go back to practical effects because your CGI werewolves suck ass. It was good when we didn't see them in full, just here and there shots of paws or eyes or whatnot. But then towards the end when the person is revealed and they go into "werewolf mode" I cringed. Not from fear but because I expected so much more. The transformation and subsequent werewolf stalk scene could have been handled so much better and in fact it HAS been in so many other movies. But I guess if they didn't have a CGI werewolf they couldn't have it flip off our heroes. Because THAT was worth it. End sarcasm. The Final Verdict: A promising plot and good main cast is all this film has going for it. Wes Craven is just an overrated director who got lucky with a few hits, and of course had to have Freddy Krueger for those to work. Kevin Williamson never could hack it in Hollywood, and really needs to just go away. Cursed is a very disappointing film.Rating: * of *****

"Cursed"--It's Not Just the Title.

posted on 10 Jun 2009

For years, vampires have been the darling of horror movies. I'm not quite sure why people are so fascinated by vampires, but there's about one vampire movie released every year. Zombies come in a close second and have been gaining an edge over vampires in recent years as can be seen by the popularity of such movies as LAND OF THE DEAD, SHAUN OF THE DEAD, the remake of DAWN OF THE DEAD, the RESIDENT EVIL series, etc. Of all the undead creatures that Hollywood makes movies about, it is werewolves that are probably respected the least. Traditionally, werewolves have been seen as stupid and savage creatures unable to reasonably think while in wolf form.

CURSED is a movie that attempts to give werewolves some respect. In the film, siblings Ellie (Christina Ricci) and Jimmy Myers (Jesse Eisenberg) are driving home from downtown L.A. when they are involved in a car accident after a wolf jumps on top of their car causing them to swerve and hit another vehicle. They attempt to rescue the woman in the other vehicle from her entrapment, but in the process the woman is dragged away by a huge wolf and Ellie and Jimmy are both injured in the attack. As the siblings are attempting to escape, the half-devoured carcass of the injured woman is thrown towards them just as emergency personnel arrive on the scene.

Jimmy knows that the creature that attacked them was a wolf, but no one else seems to believe him and even Ellie can't support his claim. Jimmy begins doing some research and becomes convinced that the creature that attacked them was a werewolf. He tells Ellie this, but she doesn't believe him, despite a night of bizarre dreams and Jimmy waking up naked in the bushes outside.

As the day progresses, both Ellie and Jimmy become aware of changes occurring within them: heightened senses of smell, stronger sexual attraction, an increase of physical strength. Jimmy also discovers that a pentagram is forming on both he and Ellie's right palm. Eventually, Ellie comes to believe Jimmy's wild claim and together they try to uncover who the creature was that attacked them so that they can kill it and reverse the curse.

CURSED was plagued with problems during its production. At one point, over half the cast was replaced for one reason or another. The script was re-written several times and as a result the movie wasn't released until nearly a year-and-a-half after its original release date. Therefore, the final version of the film is completely different from the one that was originally envisioned and filmed. The movie was directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson and together this talented duo was able to salvage a film that could have been a total disaster. The movie isn't as interesting as it could have been, but it still contains some comedy and is tied together rather nicely. CURSED doesn't quite resurrect the sub-genre of werewolf movies, but it does treat werewolves better than many other films (for instance werewolves in this movie are quite intelligent) and provides for an entertaining, but far from chilling movie-watching experience.

The unrated DVD version of the film really isn't that different from the rated version of the movie. There's just a little more blood and guts. Extra features on the DVD include selected scenes commentary with the special effects makeup supervisor and three behind the scenes featurettes. The highlight of the extra features is a short "documentary" by Jesse Eisenberg entitled BECOMING A WEREWOLF. This short film is fun with a little bit of wit and has Wes Craven in it acting as himself.
