Surprisingly Good!
posted on 14 Aug 2009I was expecting some grainy low-budget video with lots of shaky-cam and Lordi thrown in there to somehow make it legitimate. I was completely wrong and glad for it! Dark Floors required a large budget and thankfully it shows - professional through and through.Horror defined here: light on gore, heavy on decaying dead and undead, suspense, terror, confusion and MONSTERS! Dark Floors unfolds well and has excellent continuity. I especially enjoyed the attention to detail as each progressive floor became more and more aged and dilapidated.True, the ending was predictable but the ride was well choreographed and fun.
Disappointment
posted on 14 Aug 2009What do you call a horror story without horror and story? This is the most irritating thing about the film: I get the feeling the writers never really decided what's actually going on in the film! It's a different thing to know it, give hints for the audience and not completely reveal it, but here, you get the feeling the screenwriters don't know it, characters in the film do not know it and audience sees that no one knows! (Remember "Cube"? Even that film knew more about itself.) I've consumed a lot of 80's horror / gore films and this movie certainly has its roots deep in those films. But a lot of important things are missing. We really know nothing about the characters. They keep repeating empty lines over and over again. The story isn't really developing - it never goes anywhere. B-acting is OK in this type of horror films, but there's not much to act in the script. We don't care about the characters. There's nothing to remember about them. There's not even cheesy humor or unnecessary sex. And most importantly - no thrills, no chills. You only get some commonly used elements of the horror film genre. They show the Lordi monsters one by one but their characters don't really contribute anything for the story.I honestly believe that this amount of story, character development and atmosphere could be achieved with minimal amount of crew and equipment. Oh yeah, film makers used to do that - and more - some 20 years ago! I felt the shared embarrassment of the audience as the film ended. Too bad really.
Weird psychotic movie...
posted on 02 Aug 20091st watched 6/18/2009 2 out of 10 (Dir- Pete Riski): Weird psychotic movie about a girl with autism who is being tested in a hospital, the power flickers, and then all hell breaks loose. I'm honestly not sure what the intentions were of the filmmakers on this one. What we get for the next 1 hour and a half(at least it wasn't longer) was a twisted horror/twilight zone/zombiefest/ghost movie that really ended up making no sense at all even to the very end. Initially, after the power goes out, everyone is missing in the hospital except for a small group of misfits including the girl and his father. There is the typical annoying character, a creepy old man, and the typical tough guy similar to many scarefests and, of course, the young girl the main character gets attracted to. Random stuff starts happening at various times like ghosts and monsters appearing, a hinting that time has stopped, and dead people as this small group try to escape whatever they're in. Of course, the autistic girl is the center of everything somehow and I really hate how they used this girl's affliction and insinuated that she was the cause and to place it in a hospital where people are cared for is really lame. We never really find out the answer to what was going on which is very strange, so please avoid this dog. Unless you want to be creeped out and confused for one hour and a half this is not for you or any moviegoer. What a waste of time really!!
I saw the movie today
posted on 27 Jul 2009I saw the movie today at some kind of prescreening, I suppose. My friend got some tickets for free and I wasn't going to pass.I'm going to try not to go into too much detail. However, if you're planning on seeing the movie, I'd advice you to watch it first. Here are a few thoughts: Visually I really liked the movie: Good camera angles, cool lightning and nice effects. Audio was good too, I thought. The story was pretty interesting and I didn't find it boring at any point. I think the introduction part of the movie could've been longer, as we now almost instantly get thrown into the action. I'm sure many disagree with this, but personally I thought the movie could've been a little longer and thereby a little slower paced at times.I have to admit I don't think I entirely understood the film and its ending, which left me a little confused. Some story related things in the film were really cool, like the time stopping and the people shooting at themselves. At this point I was expecting a little more of the movie and where it was heading and I was slightly disappointed in the end.The biggest problem for me, watching the movie, was that the monsters are indeed the members of Lordi, and no matter how good they look, I can't really be scared of them, since I'm familiar with them. Not only that, but also I found it a little weird how monsters that different from each other kept randomly showing up. I think it would've been a cooler movie (or a few) to only have one or two of these characters in a movie. I especially enjoyed Ox; he looked really bad ass. Omen was also cool. No offense, Mr Lordi, but with him being the "big boss" at the end, I can't say I was impressed. The other characters looked pretty sweet, but him I found least scary. Of course this might be because I've seen him the most.I can't say for sure if I would've found the movie more scary if I didn't know the characters, but I definitely think so.The actors did a good job, I thought. No complaints there, I bought it.Overall, I did not expect too much of the movie. I saw a short trailer once (I try to avoid trailers and reading too much up front to give me a totally fresh nothing-knowing movie experience) and it was pretty cool, though I was afraid the characters might screw it up.I thought it was really stylish and the story had lots of potential. Maybe I'll understand it entirely some day when you guys comment on it. I will say, though, that I'm seeing too many horror movies concentrated on children and their drawings. :) I feel like I forgot to comment on something, but I guess I'll just stop here. I'll try to answer possible questions you may have.-Ken
Better than expected
posted on 23 Jul 2009I was a little worried about this movie. The ratings here at IMDb were rather negative, and the movie seemed to be more like an expensive Lordi commercial. I had no big expectations, but ultimately was curious enough to watch. And now I'm rather glad I did. I... liked it.The plot is quite simple: a father and his disabled daughter and a handful of other people take the elevator in a hospital. Suddenly the elevator stops between two floors for a while, and finally continues to the 6th floor. The people on the elevator find the hospital completely deserted. They notice that time seems to have stopped and they are being chased by monsters, and it seems the monsters are after the little girl. It is pretty much a basic horror movie scenario: Group of people trying to escape a scary place where a killer/monster chases them, so it's not very original, but the movie worked better than many other horror-films with the same basic plot line. The monsters weren't too scary. Maybe they would have been scarier if they weren't familiar from the band. Althou they looked a lot more realistic with some computer enhancement, they didn't scare me at all, because I knew them beforehand. To me they weren't scary monsters, they were a rock-band. The movie might have worked better with new never before seen monsters, but it was still entertaining. The actors weren't the best out there, and the movie suffered from a common horror movie problem: The survivors don't seem too shaken about the deaths of their friends. That doesn't bother me too much in this case, since they just met that day so there was no emotional bond between anybody but the father and his daughter, plus one of them was an idiot so I understand why nobody cared about his death. The movie ends with nothing explained or concluded, which suggests there is a sequel coming and this was just the introduction. Usually I hate this kind of endings, but surprisingly this time I wasn't too bothered by that. So, all in all, this was a rather good horror film and definitely a lot better than people say. Dark Floors was a lot better than Silent Hill or Resident Evil. (Some people are going to rip me apart for saying that, but hey, it's true!) I give this movie 7/10. If there is no sequel, it's not a huge loss, but if there is, I'm watching it.
What the...?
posted on 13 Jul 2009I have seen some pretty bad movies, and this is right up there. No plot to speak of, it's like one of those bad coma episodes on a soap-opera. I just wanted to smack that little girl because, well lets just say, she's real suspicious all the way through the movie. The monsters running around wearing some bling was funny. I also saw a bit of "Silent Hill" in there. And I read that this was done by, and or stared a Finnish metal band, Lordi. So it's no wonder that it didn't make much sense. It seem to be a vehicle for promoting there band and nothing more. The FX are very good, the look of the movie, the monsters, and even the acting also good. But the story and the telling of it, just aren't there.
Interpreting The Ending
posted on 17 Jun 2009A lot of people cannot figure out the ending and neither could I until I really sat down to think about it. For anyone who didn't exactly understand, this is what I got out of it.It shows the girl allowing the darkness to kill her dad stating "Just hand on a little longer" or something like that. This is basically her telling him that she was angry that he was making her do all of these tests even though he knew she didn't like it.Then it goes into flashback mode showing her holding a blue crayon instead of the red crayon at the start of the movie. This part is what puzzled me, though after I watched the beginning over again I caught on. She was stating over and over, while holding the red crayon, that she wanted the red crayon. When they show the flash back in the end with her holding the blue crayon, what I assume is that she saw the blue crayon, not a red crayon in her hand.I also infer that while she was in the machine she had witnessed everything that was about to happen and the old man must've as well and informed her that he wasn't cold anymore, meaning he knew that he was going to die and that it made him happy.
I think i'll stick to Lordi's music
posted on 07 Jun 2009so the entire story is about a girl who's special in her own kinda way, and, as it happens, time repeats itself over and over again.......what a great story DUMBASSES!!! The acting was decent, i'll give the movie that...but the plot line and everything BUT the acting was the biggest disappointment since....well i cant really say 'cause i'll get a lotta heat. Lordi makes some damn good music, in my opinion, and I think they should STAY with music. I'm sure that someone somewhere loved the movie, but they probably also like Once Upon a Time in Mexico and like Unbreakable even better.I have to say that this movie would have been a hellova lot better if they woulda made an actual storyline and gave the "Demons" (as i call them) some sort of background as to why they're there, why they want the girl, and WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON!!!
Unexpectedly good movie
posted on 03 Jun 2009I don't know if the Lordi monsters are part of some Finnish legend, if so then the movie would make more sense if I actually knew the legend. For me, Lordi is just the name of an unpleasant rock formation, whose members dress stupid, and that won the Eurovision contest without actually deserving it. So each time the monsters showed on screen , my brain was automatically making the connection with a rock star with a lot of make-up on. And on second thought , who on earth gets scared nowadays by a stupid screaming ghost or a ghoul with too many teeth... Luckily for this movie , the monster apparitions are pretty rare, and leave room for the rest of the things that make the movie actually good. Exquisite dark atmosphere reminding of Silent Hill, creepy deserted hospital, halls with bodies laying around (but not too bloody), lurking shadows, all these keep you wandering what's going to happen next. The creepy little girl with long dark hair adds some spice on several occasions (The Ring surly influenced a lot of movies...), and the time-space distortions(reminding me of Hypercube) are like topping on an ice-cream. You don't actually need more of a background story , it's the atmosphere and the suspense that drive the movie, and the ending , while not giving any explanation, it delivers the needed comfort. No ending in the "to be continued" style ,like 90% of today's horrors, no useless gore with some psycho killer chopping body parts from stupid teenagers, just one good fantasy horror/thriller. The only thing that messes the movie it's the Lordi , and if they would have created better monsers(13 Ghosts would be an example), with no rock band connection , this movie would have been much more appreciated.
A Finnish horror film.
posted on 26 May 2009From the Ghost House Underground collection, a film from Finland directed by Pete Riski. Some real special effects, but story gets pretty murky. An autistic little girl named Sarah(Skye Bennett)has her father Ben(Noah Huntley)at his wits end and in deep concern about her health and welfare as tests at the hospital just don't tell him what he wants to hear. He decides to remove her from the hospital without doctor's orders; but when the elevator breaks down and temporarily traps them with a few others a hellish nightmare begins. The elevator doors finally open, but the hospital appears mysteriously empty...no patients, no staff. Mutilated bodies are soon found and ghost-like creatures begin an all out attack. Survival of the group may well rely on Sarah. Also in the cast: Dominique McElligott, Ronald Pickup, William Hope and Mari Liimatainen.
one of the worst horror films
posted on 02 May 2009This is one of the worst horror movies that i have ever seen. When there is a power failure during the tomography procedure of his daughter Sarah, Ben decides to leave the hospital. But Ben and his daughter along with nurse Emily (who tries to convince him that Sarah should continue her treatment in the same hospital) and three other passengers get struck in the elevator. After a while, when the elevator opens, they see that there is nobody in the hospital and the environment is creepy and they are soon hunted by devils like monsters. The acting of every character is horrible. The screenplay is one of the worst screenplays. The music is also not good. It is mere a complete waste of time to watch this movie. But if you want to see how worst a horror movie can be made, just watch this...
Weak horror attempt by an embarrassing rock band
posted on 30 Apr 2009Just finished watching, can't say I was impressed. It starts of quite good, the visual and the atmosphere gives a creepy feeling as this type of movie should. But it all ends when the first lordi monster appears. Not only do you recognize them from the band lordi, but they are seriously malplaced in the movie. Doomsday monsters with leather jackets and piercings are so 80's.As for the storyline, it starts of as similar horror movies, people trapped inside a hell hole. But there is no clear story on why and what is happening. The viewer is thrown some lines on possible reasons, but the lines never meet and end up to anything but a mess. With all the money spent on this film, with an intriguing start and some good effects, I had thought someone would have taken better care of the product. I wonder if lordi made this movie just to prove that their show costumes could be scary (except they aren't).So the movie gets cred for the visuals, i guess the money had to go somewhere. But the rest is an embarrassing attempt from a rock band to make their on-stage monster aliases scarier.
Is this a promotion for Lordi?
posted on 06 Apr 2009I wondered if this movie some kind of promotion for Lordi the rock band. Seriously i not really like the character of Sarah. I think she isn't thankful to what people have done for her. And being as a retarded kid, despite of all those superpowers she has, I'd rather to say she is the main devil. She let everybody dies even her own father. Don't expect you can figure out any clues from watching this movie, because there isn't anything worth thinking of. it is just emptiness.Really disappointed.Thanks.
Some points of the movie
posted on 27 Mar 2009Some points to help understand the movie.I believe it is similar to ground hog day, where sarah is living the same nightmare over and over. Somehow the old man is connected to sarah in this. He changes from not feeling cold when he whispers, to sarah to being "undead" when the elevator gets stuck between 6 and 7. He says in the elevator "not 6 not 7 not hell and not heaven" this sort of explains where the nightmare takes place i.e. in a place between hell and heaven, where time stands still.I cant think of what is causing the ground hog effect, other than the new untested medication they are giving to sarah The end of the movie is the beginning of another nightmare, only this time sarah wants a blue crayon, everything is fine until she realises she is reliving another nightmare when the old man whispers in her ear.
A Bizarre and Weird Trip to a Disturbed Mind
posted on 25 Mar 2009While in the hospital for a tomography of the brain of his autistic daughter Sarah (Skye Bennett), Ben (Noah Huntley) becomes upset when there is a power failure. He decides to leave the hospital with Sarah, while the nurse Emily (Dominique McElligott) tries to convince him to leave Sarah for further treatment. They get the elevator with three other passengers, and suddenly the elevator stops; when the door opens, people has vanished from the hospital, the environment is creepy and they are chased by devilish monsters. They find that they are trapped in the hospital, and the creatures seem to be hunting Sarah."Dark Floors" is a bizarre and weird trip to a disturbed mind of an autistic girl. The dark story is intriguing and has a promising beginning, but the conclusion is disappointing. The performance of Skye Bennett, the eerie atmosphere and the special effects are the plus of this movie; Emily is a nice character well performed by Dominique McElligott; however, it is impossible to feel any empathy for the lead and important character performed by Noah Huntley. My vote is five.Title (Brazil): "Alma Diabólica" ("Devilish Soul")
Epic Fail of a Movie
posted on 21 Mar 2009This is one of those movies you pick up by accident when you meant to buy something good, and it's really only good for a laugh. That is, laughing at the horrible Acting, Directing, Writing, Cinematography, and overall premiss for the film, which is what . . . still don't know. I watched it, hated it, watched all the commentary on it in hopes of finding some clue about what the hell I just watched, only to see one of the most un-charismatic bands ever dressed like monsters and commentating like retards. An actual quote from one of the band members who dresses like a mummy, when asked about the movie, said "There's sand in this movie. Sand equals mummy. so yah. it was cool." not even joking. Don't give this movie a second of your time. You'll be all the better for it.
Here we go again
posted on 21 Mar 2009*Sigh* Leave it to us Finns to take a stupid idea, blow it out of proportion and try to market it as cool. Lordi is a mediocre band at best, and a single gimmick will get you only so far.To all you marketing idiots out there: this is the reason for the inherent minority complex that is often encountered when Finland tries to export something.Lordi isn't scary. Lordi is lame. Lordi is OVER.I want to apologize to the rest of the world for this plastic-faced idiocy. Sure, they won the Eurovision. No, wait - they won the Eurovision. That's it. I rest my case.
Bite it like a hospitalized bulldog!
posted on 15 Mar 2009Well how was I suppose to know this was "the" dumb ass promotional "Lordi Motion Picture"? I mean, I realized this when that "dinosaur" costume showed up and by the time the lead singer made his appearance I was humming "Hard Rock Hallelujah" to myself... even though I hate that song. "Dark Floors" is about a young autistic girl who is in the process of being sneaked out of the hospital by her over protective father when they, and the rest of the people in that particular elevator, become momentarily trapped... When they arrive at their floor it comes as quite a surprise to find that there is nobody else around. The hospital is empty... Except for a variety of monsters that seem to be stalking them for no apparent reason... They run through the hallways and stairwells, encountering all of the band members of the heavy metal band in their outlandish, shock-rock costumes... Nothing really memorable here, except the lousy acting, lack of gore/nudity, and the utterly shameless promotional edge, reminding me very much of "KISS Meet the Phantom of the Park". Yeah, remember that dud? Wish I didn't... I would just recommend avoiding all of these Ghost House films like a fungus and not listen to Lordi since they are a Gwar ripoff band!
An interesting take
posted on 27 Feb 2009I went into the movie expecting a cheap horror film surrounded by the usual formula. What I saw was very professionally done with some really good state-of-the-art SFX (exception: the elevator creature in the leather jacket with the humongous head and teeth) especially near the end.Ben, the father of autistic Sarah, is the only one who hears all of the mysterious noises. This bothered me a little because, to me, it made him appear whiny and weak - two qualities I don't appreciate in the lead character.Sarah was a little annoying. As a, what appears to be, a wheel-chair bound child and autistic she got around a lot; sneaking down hallways, ending up in other rooms. The interesting thing was as the team made their ways down the stairwell, someone had her wheel chair with them. This appeared to be a nice quality. The one thing I didn't understand fully, why were they shifting through time? The clocks all stopped and in some cases appeared to be at 6:50 and/or 7:05 throughout the movie. The tone is dark, and with each progressive floor movement the halls got darker and dirtier. The further down they traveled the more bodies were found, the more dread was encountered, and more questions were raised. Overall, I was quite impressed.

Silent Hill without the flavour of it
posted on 28 Aug 2009The 4 points are given for the start of the movie that really made me think I would spend en enjoyable evening. The crews, the actors do their best and it starts quite well I have to say even found myself jumpy over a couple of scenes. Now what makes this movie into a real annoyingly bad one at the end, well: -The lack of sense in the story, they got trapped in the elevator and when they come out of it it's en empty hospital, in which the time has frozen and where it's becoming more and more decayed/gruesome as they near the ground, got that, then what the Hell (so to speak) does Tobias do? What is that character who not only seems to know an awful lot of thing but doesn't say anything and when killing one of the monster is killed himself saying the last words "at last", so can someone please explain me? -The monsters, this is a bloody movie not a giant commercial, the monsters have to be justified, anyone who doesn't know the lame Death Metal "The Lordi" can't understand and appreciate it, and how many people know them? I mean outside Finland? There is a funny game in Finland that involve a lot of vodka, knifes and a square room, once you are all well drunk you stand up near the walls opposite to each others, you turn off the light and throw the knives. I strongly suggest the Lordis try this game more often.-The tiny shitty ending, OK the pen's colour has changed from Red to Blue and the bum (Tobias) is not longer cold....couldn't't they just expend it, here again they could have ended up like Silent Hill but missed the step.If you want a good movie watch Silent Hill or watch Dark Floors until 2/3rd and then turn off thinking that it will be a happy ending anyway.
