too predictable, too unrealistic

posted on 28 Aug 2009

I'm surprised such a big star as Hugh Jackman would pick such a bad script. From the beginning, it was easy to tell Jackman's character, Wyatt, was going to be the bad guy. He befriends, shy accountant, Jonathan(they bond over smoking weed in the office). One afternoon, he "accidently" picks up Jonathan's phone and Jonathan gets his phone. Wyatt leaves the country, but tells Jonathan it's OK to use his phone. Jonathan soon discovers Wyatt is a member of the List, a type of anonymous sex club. He starts calling up numbers and hooking up with woman. One night the girl that shows up is someone he knows and really likes. He goes to get some ice and leaves her in a hotel room. When he returns, she is gone, blood is on the bed, and he is knocked out. The rest of the movie is what happened to the girl and how is Wyatt setting Jonathan up and why? I didn't find it thrilling.FINAL VERDICT: Not very good. Hugh Jackman just doesn't fit this role. He needs to be the good guy not bad one.

Entertaining but with a terrible ending

I had low expectations when I saw this movie mainly because of its poor rating at IMDb. After watching it I have to say that I liked it until a tragic thing happens to the leading character after that the movie is just regular and it has a bad ending. I think this movie deserves 6.5 stars.I found the first half of the movie interesting and entertaining, the performances of the 2 leadings are very good and Michelle Williams is good for what is needed of her. I would have liked that this movie had been more like the Michael Douglas film "The Game (1997)" but in a sexual aspect. The life of Jonathan McQuarry,a lonely accountant, will have a big change when he meets Wyatt Bose and begins to hang out with him being introduced to a kind of sex club where he will find the love of his life but he might lose her too .....6.5 stars = regular +

Shy loner accountant Jonathan McQuarry (Ewan McGregor) has no life outside his numbers, until one night he meets lawyer Wyatt Bose (Hugh Jackman), who introduces him to life. When Wyatt goes away to London on business, Jonathan 'accidentally' gets Wyatt's phone, and soon he's being called by dozens of women who are all a part of a sex club, and now his life is filled with everything he's ever imagined. One night he runs into another member of the list, S (Michelle Williams), before he knows she's on the list, and it's love at first sight for him. Then he discovers she's a part of the same club, and soon everything in his life changes again - for the worse.Murder, deception and treachery follow Jonathan as he tries to unravel the real Wyatt, and why he seems to be Wyatt's newest target. One word can easily describe this film: YAWN. With every 'twist' the film had, even an average moviegoer could see it coming a mile away. The first half is nothing but sex, and the second is nothing but sheer boredom. The acting was lackluster, and everything else about this film wasn't much better.

A bad thriller

On many aspects,Deception is like many crappy generic erotic thrillers made for TV.I think that the element which makes Deception marginally better than those rubbish films is the presence of two brilliant actors...who are unfortunately wasted by the boring and painfully predictable screenplay. In other words,Deception is a very bad thriller.I think the worst point from it is the screenplay, which results too basic and predictable. If you do not figure out the twists from this movie, you have never seen a thriller.Plus, this is one of that movies which make the characters to act stupidly for making the story to advance. So,the spectators only have a collection of obvious twists and boring scenes. This film has so many (predictable) twists on its desperate effort of amazing us with its (non-existant) ingenuity. The only saving grace from this movie is the performances from Ewan McGregor and Hugh Jackman, who show enormous charisma on their characters. All the time,I wished to see this two talented actors on a better film than this crappy erotic thriller. The female cast (composed by Michelle Williams,Natasha Henstridge,Maggie Q and Charlotte Rampling) does not have much to do.Lisa Gay Hamilton did not convince me at all on her character.Deception is a very crappy film which commits the fatal mistake of being boring. In summary, this movie is a waste of time and I suggest you to do something more interesting than watching this boring and predictable thriller.

Deception

The trailer of this movie looked interesting. The story is about an accountant Wyatt Bose (Hugh Jackman) who meets Jonathan McQuarry (Ewan McGregor) – who in turn introduces Wyatt to a secret sex club. Wyatt falls in love with one of his acquaintances S (Michelle Williams) and gets involved in a blackmail by Jonathan who wants Wyatt to transfer a huge sum from a few bank account to Spain. Wyatt does that. Jonathan plants a bomb and kills Wyatt. I will leave the story here and not play spoilt sports. The story starts with a psychological angle, moves to sexual contours, deceive, and blackmail. The movie moves slowly throughout, gains maximum interest in the deceiving part – holds your attention, but remaining times – it is just a usual dull affair. Both Hugh Jackman and Ewan McGregor look great and act well. But the style of narration does not build up that interest to make a great cinema of a good story like this.First time director Marcel Langenegger does a decent job in delivering a visually good cinema – good closeups, good acting, good music, good movements of camera – I think he has a good eye for making better movies.I think there is a problem with the scripting of the movie. It takes the first 40 minutes to build the story, and gives 10 minutes of interest and falls back to a mundane thriller. My rating started from 4.5 at the beginning of the movie, increased to 6.5 when it reached the deceive part, but pulmetted down to 5 by the end of the movie.(Star 4.75 out of 10)

"The essence of lying is in deception, not in words." John Ruskin The only deception in the film Deception is that you might expect a cool, modern thriller. WRONG. This piece of cinematic disappointment defines the dramatic descriptor "telegraph." In other words, if you didn't have an idea of what is to come from what is happening now, then you've not been to junk movies enough not to be surprised. Of course, you can feel right at home with the pervasive use of cell phones, but then you may watch enough TV to be used to them as dramatic device.Jonathan McQuarry (Ewan McGregor) is a dorky high-level auditor with the requisite glasses and outdated haircut who stumbles into a sex ring, aided by the urbane Wyatt Bose (High Jackman). As Jonathan enjoys himself picking the ever so sweet fruit from this vine, he falls in love with one of the anonymous partners, not a good thing to do.The ensuing plot complications are as clichéd as clouds in Seattle—they don't always make sense, but, hey, this is the movies! The problem is that without a sharp script, the inconsistencies are more obvious and plot points just not credible, e.g., how does she magically appear at the right spot in a big city? or how can you commit a murder in a public park in Madrid without anyone around in broad daylight? or how can you get a phony passport on short notice? or how can you withdraw millions with that document especially since the photo ID online doesn't look close to your impersonation? or, oh, well, I'm not going to deceive you—this movie lacks credibility.

An auditor who gets into a sex club and then black mailed by his so-called friend.

This is one of the best movie i ever see. No one can judge what would be the end. I just was thinking Ewan would be still alive but that was also 50-50. An amazing drama, thriller movie. At the start of the movie, a guess it would be a flop film but as the movie goes ahead, it take you a series of suspense incidents and after many tackles by the hero and villain, eventually hero wins the game. There is also a good romance with the Michelle. Both are in love after there encounter in the subway and in the hotel. It is expected that Michelle is also playing from behind the scene but she is also used by Jackman. A good learning movie too that one should act like a gentleman and think about people who are suddenly trying to close to you.

Great Acting but HORRIBLE ending.. and hard to swallow movie

It is hard to imagine that Hugh Jackson or Ewan McGregor would sign on to this movie with such a horrible ending and a bunch of impossible parts that just don't seem feasible.... hitchcock would be ashamed of such a ripoff.Spoilers.... In one day Ewan's character manages to not only get the service guy to open his room instead of him, but also.. here is the kicker, manages to also get a fake passport made and fly to madrid.. but the worst part is that..after he admits to knowing that the girl was in on the scam.. he drops not only his half of the money.. but both.. .and so does the girl... and thus a totally hard to swallow ending. Great to imagine people put Love above money..... but not in this scenario.I give it a 4 for being such a flop on the mcguffin and twists.. but great actors. what a shame the script sucked!

A basic instinct not quite dressed to kill

Have you ever longed for a bit more excitement in your life? Many of us have. Especially, it seems, introverted and slightly nerdy Jonathan McQuarry, an audit manager played by Ewan McGregor.McGregor is a high flyer, checking the books for top Wall Street firms. There's only one problem. He doesn't have a life. Zero social world, and near zero sexual escapades to look back with his mates. Assuming he had any. Which he doesn't. Accountants are wary of him for the few weeks when he looks at their figures. And to everyone else he's just a temporary fixture.Until smoothly tailored Wyatt Bose breezes onto the scene. A spliff, a game of tennis, and an accidental swapping of mobile phone handsets puts McQuarry in line for more sex, deception and perilous living than Little Red Riding Hood in heat checking out the bear pit.In the opening scene, McQuarry is alone in a majestic Manhattan skyscraper, only the cleaners in the background (behind glass doors). The camera traverses the splendid skylines. All is framed to perfection, both visually and to establish the characters and storyline. So when the plot moves into Basic Instinct territory, you are not surprised to see lovers pictured in postcard perfection. Standing in the rain. Or having is sex in those geometrically interesting positions. And lighting that just happens to show off their lovely skin tones and delicately arranged shadows.Director of photography Dante Spinotti (The Insider, L.A. Confidential, Heat) uses a high-tech Panavision Genesis digital video camera for the night scenes, capturing colours and detail in a way where film falls short. "The Genesis has a much stronger sensitivity," Spinotti explains, "so it can read in the shadows much more than film does." I spent much time admiring the photography. It was more interesting than the story. Shifting dodgy funds about electronically is hardly visceral viewing. So we have a mysterious sex-club that McQuarry stumbles into. He meets high-profile women whose lives are too busy for relationships.Queue meaningless sex. No names. No work talk. The initiator, male or female, pays the hotel. The only important words being, "Are you free tonight?" McQuarry is emotionally attracted in one encounter – against the rules. Her name begins with S. She's blonde, leggy, and played by Michelle Willliams (Brokeback Mountain, She's Not There). Soon the games begin, and you won't be surprised to learn they include blackmail and large amounts of moola. To give Deception its due, the intrigue does develop in ways I hadn't expected. I just wish I could have cared enough about the characters to ignore the plot holes and lack of any real depth or substance. As a thriller, a piece of soft porn, or a character study, Deception is room temperature. Luscious visuals are poor compensation for a contrived and unengrossing story. It passes the time well enough and makes a competent debut feature for director Marcel Langenegger, but Spinotti needs worthier projects and McGregor and Williams need to show that they are serious about acting. Some of the best lines used the f-word – so well suited to McGregor's well-modulated and slightly posh voice (when he can maybe seem almost like a more buff version of the very proper Hugh Grant). He sadly he doesn't get to say them, but his co-stars do.Deception makes for a pleasantly titillating hour and a half but, much like a drunken one-night stand, it would be silly to take it too seriously.

Good and sexy suspense thriller that's enjoyable and it ends as fair play when the tables are turned!

posted on 17 Jul 2009

Though many might say and find "Deception" as predictable and not all that good of a film as they will say it's your typical suspense thriller that turns about as fair when the tables are turned in the end well maybe so. I for one had a darn good time viewing the film though for the way it was done and the scenes blended well especially the sex scenes and the acting from the characters and the plot for the way it builds up suspense is some of the best I had seen in a good time.Hugh Jackman enters as top notch and big time lawyer Wyatt Bose who befriends an auditor for the firm by the name of Johnathan McQuarry(Ewan McGregor). The characterization is shown from the start the differences between personalities as Bose a clear sneaky party animal and McQuarry a laid back social misfit. Only Bose introduces McQuarry to an underground sex club in New York City, and when Bose later departs the two accidentally or purposely exchange cell phones. And in Bose's phone now in the possession of McQuarry these strange phone numbers of lovely and attractive ladies appear and the call ups come from them for the meeting of pleasure and passion in fine hotel rooms. So one by one with some very hot and steamy sex scenes McQuarry enjoys his fun and pleasure with these call girls types. Only upon one encounter a strange and crazy setup happens with a unique blond just called S(Michelle Williams). The film from this point on takes twist and turns as some may see for themselves while others may have to think harder and see the scheme and what is behind all of this. As Wyatt returns one can see his intentions from the start with Jonathan as the nights with beautiful women prove only to be decoys. As you will see I don't want to spoil it when the tables turn identity wise then finally some fairness has come into the game.Overall "Deception" may be a little predictable and easy for some veteran movie people to figure out yet still it's suspenseful enough to enjoy and mostly it's carried by it's sexy scenes as the performances from Jackman was wicked and Williams is innocently likable. Cleary so far for this year a good underrated movie to watch.

If you are in the mood for an intense erotic thriller, then Deception does deliver.

A very well done thriller, that has it all, it's very sexy, and it keeps you glued to your seat with excitement, cause it has a great plot with so many twists, you'll keep wondering who has who right where they want them. Hugh Jackman and Ewan Mcgregor give commendable performances, so does Michelle Williams. But the problem here is the story falls short when it comes to being original. It seems to borrow from other thrillers. I won't say what they are you'll half to see the movie to find out. But being original seems to be not so easy anymore. But still a good thriller none the less. I was hooked when the story really picked, and got suspenseful, and you could really feel the tension of what happens next. I'm telling you viewers Deception will deliver.

are you free tonight?...

Jonathan McQuarry is an auditor in Manhattan, moving from office to office checking their books. While working late, a smooth and well-dressed man named Wyatt Bose chats Jonathan up, offers him a joint, and soon they're pals. When their cell phones are accidentally swapped, Jonathan answers Wyatt's phone to a series of women asking if he's free tonight. Jonathan discovers it's a sex club: busy powerful people meet each other anonymously in hotels.Jonathan falls for one of the club members, whom he knows only as "S," whom he's also seen on a subway. When she goes missing, patterns emerge and Jonathan faces demands involving violence and lots of money...anyone who doe not get this movie, within the first ten minutes (i.e who the bad guy is) then you need shooting!! even Jackmans face looks slightly sinister on the one sheet!! him and Ewan become best mates in about three minutes, and when wolverine discovers that obi-wan has been using his phone to do his sordid thing with his light saner, he's like 'no worries mate, crack on!!' i would be otherwise inclined.with the material on offer here, it's surprising to see such high profile actors in such a bland predictable movie, albeit a bland, predictable movie that has a bit of charm to it.the sets are very good and the whole film has a very cold atmosphere to it. Jackman comes across a little Jim Carrey in the opening scenes, and Renton, well he's a complete gimp until he undergoes his transformation.if you want to see a predictable movie with two biggish stars, you can do a lot worse. if you know that this is gonna be bad, stay away.it's a perfect rainy day movie, it doesn't harm, doesn't challenge the grey matter, doesn't do much really....

Mostly rubbish

posted on 11 Jun 2009

Two things to say about this film.Firstly, what an astoundingly rubbish title for a movie. "Deception"??? Oh, come on. Can you think of a more non-committal, less interesting, less imaginative title for a movie? I can't. All thrillers are about deception, of one kind or another."Deception" originally went into production under the title "The List". Hmm... Well... OK. I admit it. That title is also pretty bad. Then, "Deception" was going to be called "The Tourist". Now, I kind of like that. Sounds art house and kind of strange. Conjures up images of an observer, an outsider. Somebody not in the loop. In fact, pretty much the character that Ewan McGregor plays.Secondly, what a completely rubbish movie! OK, maybe not completely rubbish. Just mostly rubbish."Deception" is a good 20 minutes too long. After a while it just seems to go on and on. The climax is misjudged and mistimed. The sex is typical Movies 24 soft core erotica, or maybe a Friday night Channel 5 movie from the early Noughties. You know the kind of thing. Soft focus humping to a soundtrack of screaming saxophone driven jazz. (Mind you don't trip over the cliché, there chief!) Also, every plot twist in "Deception" is signposted way in advance. If you don't get at least one of the major plot twists then, frankly, you really should give up watching movies. Pretty lame, pretty dull, pretty bad movie.I said 'mostly rubbish', so some of it must have been good. Yes?I did like the film's chilly, European ambiance. I liked the idea of powerful people, too isolated and too busy to develop human relationships. I liked Hugh Jackman's well dressed and cold instigator, Ewan McGregor's lonely accountant and Michelle Williams' bruised vulnerability. I thought all three leads made the most of their underwritten roles, but sadly it was not enough. There is plenty of space in this world for a good, sexualised thriller (see the original "Basic Instinct"), but sadly "Deception" was nothing like a good sexualised thriller.

"Derailed" All Over Again

posted on 07 Jun 2009

I went into the theater because of the interesting star combination of Hiugh Jackman and Ewan McGregor. I did not have an idea what the story would be about. However, the simple (and unimaginative) title was a give-away of the plot. Within the first ten minutes, you already feel you have seen this movie before. I immediately thought of the Clive Owen-Jennifer Aniston movie "Derailed." (The initial chance seduction occurred at a train station, as well.) John McQuarrie (Ewan McGregor) is a lonely accountant/auditor with zero social life. He gets hooked into a sex "list" by the magnetic man's man Wyatt Bose (Hugh Jackman). There he meets the girl of his dreams simply known to him as "S" (Michelle Williams). Of course, since the title gives away the plot, you knew this set-up was all an elaborate deception, and nothing is really what it seemed. As for the plot, there were a lot of improbabilities that weaken the story (some spoilers follow later for those interested). The suspense was a bit muted because the director was generous with the clues. Or may be we have just watched to many of these variations of this story in movies. The sex "list" set-up (which was the main thing of interest that set this movie apart from others like it) was most likely inspired by real such social clubs. These lurid circles where busy people just call each other randomly for some anonymous commitment-free sex, I am sure, ordinary guys like us will never get mixed up with in real life. This movie does give us a vicarious teasing peek into this alternative lifestyle, though.I did like the triumph of good at the end though, because there were no strings attached.I could not help but compare this film with "Derailed" because they were so similar, and "Derailed" was clearly better in all aspects. That said, this film "Deception" is really not that bad as the cheap local posters (that resort to sexy photos of girls in lingerie) would suggest.***********SPOILERS FOLLOW************** These are the questions that the movie requires you to turn a blind eye on: How could Bose possibly assume that McQuarrie would do his criminal bidding just because of "S"? At that time, McQuarrie had only met "S" twice, and they did not even have sex yet. And indeed, can an auditor actually gain access to perform multi-million dollar money transfers from the company he is auditing? Also, is it that easy to create fake passports? Especially in the case of McQuarrie.

a take on a disease in movies known as "Generic-itis"

posted on 05 Jun 2009

This is your doctor speaking to you, dear film: You are suffering from a (somewhat) acute case of Generic-itis. This means, basically, that if this is a dramatic thriller, which it is, you'll hear somewhere, over the mountains, M. Night Shyamalan utter his famous phrase: "What a twist!" And, as well, that the script will involve some kind of gimmick to put the characters in, in this case the sort of underground/legal(?) world of sex clubs where people have whole lists of anonymous callers to go and have wild sex in super-pricey hotel rooms without knowing who they are. At the same time the gimmick is working through the plot's bloodstream, big doses of things like "contrivances" and "Holy s***, are these people kidding me?" theatrics. With Deception, the so-called deception can be seen within about I would say one and a half minutes of Hugh Jackman's performances (which involves, at that point, smoking up Ewan McGregor's character Jonathan with weed late at night in a high-rise office), and from there on in it's a matter of fish in the barrel for the writer and director. How long will it be before Jonathan finds himself as duper by Michele Williams' character (that's not a spoiler, that's a fact) and made a pawn in a not really intricate extortion scheme? Does it matter? So much of the genericitis relies upon such over-used stuff like horrid synthesizer and other music that resembles things like beats. And the best way to try and combat any generic music? Bland direction with not well times HD quality camera-work that makes Miami Vice look professional. And really, if there is a reason at all to keep watching the movie, and sad to say for this unlicensed doctor of movies there is, it's for how hard the actors do try with the material to make it work. And, as well, for that kernel of an idea involving sex clubs that *could*, *should* be interesting, that could make for a deliciously brutal and sexually charged picture. I ended up throwing chocolate candies at the screen, sometimes in droves, not because a particular scene got my goad (which some really did, particularly some of the Madrid scenes as one realizes how stupidly short McGregor's attraction has been to Williams), but because I was still watching it.That's another thing about genericitis: like something you bring on an airplane, a book or even one of the movies available to watch, you know you should be doing something better like watching the skyline or God forbid sleeping. But it sucks one in for all the wrong reasons. The cure? Try your best to stay away and not to be lured in by temtping and plausibly enjoyable things like good actors or an interesting premise.

Predictable But Great Style

posted on 26 May 2009

The plot in this movie is somewhat obvious and very slow at times but not every movie has to rely solely on excitement and plot. This is one of those movies. Not only does McGregor play the shy guy role perfectly, the city shots provide the perfect backdrop for the entire movie (although the ending kind of ruined the setting). Another aspect of this movie that I liked was the protagonist antagonist conflict. Unlike most movies here the villain isn't the unstoppable stay-out-of-his-way-or-else villain. During the whole movie you're never certain who is going to win in the end. This helps keep things a little less predictable. If your only judge of a good movie is the quality of the story and the flow of the plot you won't like this movie. But if you can appreciate great shots, great setting, and a pretty decent love story, this movie has what you need.

just bad

posted on 24 May 2009

I just seen the film and i have to write a review as this film is just a waste of time. A film with 3 big name actors should not be so boring. The plot what starts out as a good idea, is so easy to see that before the end middle of the film. The plot twist is so easy to see, that there are no surprises in the movie. The film contains sex scenes and some nudity but their is no erotic sizzle, with the scene being over in a flash. This is not a porno, more like a art movie with good looking people having fake sex together. The final twist's at the end are, so over the top that they don't make sense, and it left with me the idea that the movie end was changed as it didn't make any sense at all.

Why So Bad?

posted on 22 May 2009

I watched this having not heard of any reviews or history. I enjoyed DECEPTION despite immediately recognizing the set-up. I didn't think it tried to hide the fact that it was trading off a zillion other thrillers, all of which trade off Alfred Hitchcock's great work. I was somewhat annoyed with the ending; i.e., after already straining incredibility it descended to silliness.Yet I was surprised that it got so thoroughly trashed! ROTTEN TOMATOES had it as 12% favorable!I've watched films that shamelessly borrow hackneyed premises, devices, tools, etc.yet didn't have the acting and style of DECEPTION. Take THE BRAVE ONE and SERAPHIN FALLS, for example. Such were also shameless rip-offs of older standards, contained a lot of fluff melodrama yet lacked performances the quality of Jackman and McGregor herein.Again, DECEPTION was nothing new and had plenty of faults. It doesn't deserve "bomb" status however. I'm guessing the movie was in a genre where a lot of film snobs cut their critical teeth and are protecting their exclusive expertise. Wouldn't want to offend Albert now, would we?

Why would they make this

posted on 20 May 2009

Was looking for some decent after the bad '21' (how did that get to number 1 anywhere) and thought that this looked interesting from the trailer and since it had Hugh and Ewan i thought why not give it a shot. I couldn't have been more wrong.like we haven't seen the idea already in 'derailed' etc. Poor acting, poor script, clunky plot which didn't leave anybody guessing at all and still felt the need to spell out what was going on in big letters! rubbish. went to watch based on the two leads thinking they'd at least guarantee a decent film. very very very disappointed. The story was contrived and so unrealistic as to be laughable and during the first half hour or so there was actual laughs in the cinema. No tension since we didn't care about any of the characters, even Ewan was unlikable!

Great filmography, great soundtrack.

posted on 08 May 2009

I loved the soundtrack in this, first and foremost, and I hope they'll release it in CD format so I can purchase it.A lot of the angles of the film were very "artsy" and "colorful," while maintaining a sort of "film noir" look to it with silhouettes and lighting. I liked that. I don't see nearly enough of it in films these days. The plot line was interesting. Unfortunately, in the later half of the movie, it became rather easy to guess the "twists" of the film, which is why I didn't give it an eight or a nine. The acting was great; Ewan McGregor made a great nerdy mouse boy that almost reminded me of Matt Damon in The Talented Mr. Ripley (which is where I thought the plot line was headed from the trailer. Don't be fooled!)Overall, I really enjoyed the film. Worth my $6.
