Loved It
posted on 14 Jan 2009This movie was unquestionably outstanding. How could anyone not enjoy this? Because they're simply just haters. The movie was a romantic comedy and easy for anyone to enjoy. Gabrielle was off the chain. She was a little uptight, but that was settled when she got her boyfriend. If the men would've been smart enough to embrace her instead of pushing away each time, she would've been that much easier to live with, although she was out of line most of the time. This was a great movie, preferably for the Black community. This was quite realistic to me. It's very cool when you get to see a strong black woman portrayed on television, as opposed to what we saw in Monster's Ball, a dependent woman who was a straight up freak. If you were looking for a movie for sex, get over it. God doesn't like us watching trash like that anyway. All in all, I watched this movie over and over again and never got tired of it. Go see it you haven't. You'll enjoy it.
Fairly decent
posted on 19 Nov 2008Synopsis: Perfectionist and Health-Inspector from Hell Eva Dandridge (played by Gabrielle Union) is a constant nuisance for her in-laws and her sisters. To keep her from meddling in their lives,Eva is matched with a single guy named Ray(played by rapper/actor LL Cool J),a local playboy type who has been paid $5,000 to date her. The trouble really starts with Ray falls in love with her ending in hilarious and sometimes tragic results. The problem with this movie is that it plays itself like a tired sitcom focusing mainly on the characters and their problems, but overall it is funny in parts especially with performances from some of the actors. Also,as for an "R" rated movie, this was one of the cleanest "R" rated films that I ever saw since most of the material deals with some sex-related dialogue and only one curse word used throughout the film. As for the lead actress here, this is finally the chance to see Gabrielle Union take charge here and it is a step up from her past material(her last good movie role was that of a cheerleader in Bring It On) as star status. You will see more of her as she progresses forward in better roles, but for this film this is just a start.
Eyes never seemed so heavy before. DELIVER ME FROM THIS MOVIE
posted on 06 Sep 2008This film was disgusting, in the most amazing of ways. It sucked more than a 5 dollar hooker, and was as entertaining as Carson Daly... yeah, that bad. I couldn't believe that my friend lent me this. I almost stopped being her friend. I saw this free and still feel I was robbed. I would only recommend this to my arch nemesis, Ben Affleck. I feel the name couldn't have been less cheesy and Gabrielle Union is a TERRIBLE, AWFUL, PITIFUL, but f*ckable actress. Unless if you're a nimph who likes masturbating to Ms. Union, I wouldn't watch it, and even then, there's no nudity scenes, sorry for the disappointment. If your local library is open, take your time to read a book and don't see this cheap movie. I feel bad for LL Cool J.
Stopped heaving after 20 minutes
posted on 19 Apr 2008Deliver us from death by cheese. I tried not to take it seriously, I really really tried to laugh at LL Cool J, and I really really really tried to take a moral message from it, but my brain just wouldnt let me. The first 30 minutes or so were pretty funny but as soon as LL Cool J turned on the charm it was like a living hell. I'm sorry, I cant continue writing.........I need the toilet.
Like a comedy, but without any comedy.
posted on 09 Apr 2008What do you get when you mix Much Ado About Nothing, LL Cool J, Taming of the Shrew, and a soundtrack featuring `Ginuwine?'I don't know, but do yourself a favor and don't go see DELIVER US FROM EVA.EVA is just one of this week's romantic comedies (the other being HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS) involving a character taking a bet to date someone. I don't mean to contradict ADAPTATION [genuflect], but this is now the most overused concept in movies today. Maybe if we had a serial killer with multiple personalities that bet itself to date itself. Like Springer, without the bald guy.Eva (Gabrielle Union) is the eldest of four sisters. After a car crash took their parents, Eva took on the responsibilities of the family. But now that all the sisters are grown up, Eva is still trying to control their lives, much to the chagrin of each girl's respective significant other, as Eva is ruining their relationships. So, of course, they plan to distract Eva with a man, so they hire Ray (LL Cool J): `Master Playa' by night, meat delivery boy by day. His price? $5000.Don't y'all be playa' hatin' on him.Of course, Eva is the biggest bitch in the universe, so LL has his work cut out for him. But he ate some spicy beans or something, and she liked that. Too bad the movie didn't just end there. Instead, we have about an hour left of totally by-the-numbers drivel that goes exactly where we predicted long in advance. And there's a horse.Eva, a health inspector, carries around a briefcase full of thermometers and various other work-related gadgets. Though we don't see it, it's definitely implied that she also carries around a metronome so she can be sure to speak at least 300 ear-piercing words a minute. This just in: men and women are different. Over.Nobody told me that the infamous record screech sound effect was being used outside of trailers now. Hmm. Maybe EVA is just groundbreaking. A pioneer of sorts. Like that one Vasco da Gama guy, but without that discovering a water route to the East part.Screenwriters James Iver Mattson, B.E. Brauner, and Gary Hardwick make the fatal mistake of believing that by putting a smart character into the story, they've created a smart script. Did she say, `temporal advent?'Alas, EVA has done something that few other movies could do: it sucked all the joy out of seeing a woman wearing a gold necklace with an 18" medallion reading..."stuff."Calling DELIVER US FROM EVA a `train wreck' would be a compliment, because that would imply some sort of impulsive rubbernecking watchability. EVA is surprisingly easy to stop looking at. There was something shiny on the floor of the theater. I never got to see what it was, but that provided for all the drama and mystery that EVA lacked.Rating --- Jabba the Hutt and an R2D2 (4½/10)

posted on 23 Feb 2008This movie had me laughing out loud from beginning to end. I saw the DVD version so the LL Cool J and K-Ci & JoJo videos helped wrap up the story lines. Gabrielle Union and LL Cool J were amazing. It was great to watch the personality transformations as they happened. Even Jacqui lightened up a bit and she seemed more stiff than Eva at times. It's a really funny movie. You don't have to think too much, you can just sit back and enjoy. Make sure you watch the deleted scenes at the end as well. It helps to clear up some gaps. It actually would have been nice to have these re-added with the release of the DVD version. I don't know why filmmakers don't do that. See it! You won't regret it!
Enjoyable romantic comedy
posted on 20 Jul 2007At first I was cautious about seeing a "black" romantic comedy, that's speaking as a black man. However as the movie progressed I found the movie funny, witty which delivered good entertainment. The story/plot is nothing new and generally the script would equally work with "white" or any other "race/ethnic minority".For once "LL Cool J" acting wasn't (seemingly) wooden and was aptly suited to the part of being a "mack" who was "out-macked" by a foxy and intelligent lady. The ending of the movie in my opinion was disappointing as it was "surgary" but nevertheless I would wholeheartedly recommend the movie to anyone who has an open mind.
I took for what it was supposed to be which is a fun movie
posted on 06 Jul 2007Deliver Us from Eva isn't a perfect film and it's not supposed. The film is a urban romantic comedy and the film does have a lot of heart. LL Cool J and Gaberille Union have very good chemisty togetehr and carry the film. Essence Attkins, Megan Good and Robinee Lee all dyme pieces also do acting jobs and the men in their lives played by Mel Jackson and Duane Martin make the film enjoyable also. If you just want a fresh fun movie then check this out.
sort of funny, but really cheesy ending
posted on 26 Jun 2007If you like LL Cool J, then this movie is for you. It was pretty good and had some funny moments. Most of which come from the smart mouth comments made by no-nonsense Eva. There are also some good gossip scenes at the beauty shop. The story is nothing original; you know exactly where it is going. Of course, the player falls for the girl whose heart he is supposed to break. They just made a mistake at the end by having a really cheesy, knight comes riding in on a white horse, type of moment. It was too hollywood and didn't really go with the rest of the film.FINAL VERDICT: There is no mystery with this movie. It is what it is. So, if you like mildly funny moments with a stereotypical romantic plot, then you may want to give this a try.
Good execution, mostly...
posted on 22 Feb 2007The director, screenwriters, cinematographer and the two leads deserve the warmest praise for what they have done here. The primary defect in this film is in the performances of the six supporting "brothers" and sisters roles. Only in the scenes where they supported the main characters were these characters worth watching. This is probably partly due to weaknesses in the script and partly to the weaknesses of the actors. It was even obvious from some of the outtakes on the DVD, that the brother's were supposed to have had outright murder in mind, this was thankfully edited out of the print, so its obvious that the script could not have been perfect. The director/screenwriter Gary Hardwick has mentioned that he had to adapt the original script to African American culture and shows himself here to be very talented. What is obvious from the fine performances of LL Cool J and Gabrielle Union, is that he certainly could have paid more attention to the minor roles than he did. Such an uneven movie! LL Cool J and Gabrielle Union deserve a 10. Cinematography, a 10. Script, an 8 - the story is basically good - as a romantic comedy, it works! Director gets an 7. The rest of the brothers and sisters get a 3, if not lower. I'm thinking if I could send Hardwick an email and ask why, he would answer, "The studio got what they paid for." What a shame. There are a lot of moments where this film hits the ball out of the park, and so it needs to be recommended.
LL and Gabriel good chemistry, but lame story and lame actors tired tired tired, old...
posted on 08 Feb 2007I was expecting this to be a standard chic flick, however, it was a little more than that. Problem is virtually everyone else in the cast is so lame and ham fisted that even the great chemistry between Gabriel Union and LL Cool J can't save the film. It's too bad because there are some downright hilarious scenes, and some really good dialogue (almost all of it between LL and Gabriel). But the first half is just lame, the ending is so smarmly wrapped up in a happy feel good way (talk about ridiculous paint by the numbers), and for the most part, Gabriel's character (Eva) is just so horrid that you can't stand her presence on the screen. Unless perhaps you are of the female persuasion, then you probably relished it.I suppose that's the point, but it went so overboard that it ends up making the movie just a pain of torture to watch whenever Eva gets in her "mood".And what was the point of that musical number at the beginning anyway??Don't bother. But its too bad cause the film had a chance..Rating 4.5 out of 10
Predictable but good
posted on 27 Jan 2007Yeah, this movie is kind of predictable. The ending could have been seen a mile away but I like this movie a lot. It was recommended to me by the same friend who recommended American History X to me. He wasn't wrong about that movie and he wasn't wrong here. I was skeptical about seeing Gabrielle Union(who is too fine for words) playing a feisty character but the movie was a lot better than the previews led me to believe.Story: 3 men who are constantly hen-pecked by their girlfriends' sister Eva hire a player named Raymond(played by LL Cool J) to date her so they can spend more time with their mates. Raymond ends up falling for Eva when he realizes that there is more to her than meets the eye.Gabrielle Union was perfect as the high-strung Eva. I never looked at her the same after this role until I watched the movie recently and saw that her character wasn't that bad. The people that really annoyed me were the black three stooges Mike, Tim and Darrell. I mean, kidnapping Raymond because his relationship was making theirs look bad was in bad taste. I know it's just a movie but that was pretty low what they did. I laughed a lot at Eva when her attitude changed around once she started to date Raymond. The scene where she was in the beauty salon after a night of passion with Raymond had me on the floor rolling. I know women tend to act funny after receiving great sex but man was she goofy. I'll admit that LL Cool J and Gabrielle Union made a great looking couple on screen. There is actually chemistry there and LL lends a certain charm to his character Raymond. I think we need to give LL a little more credit as an actor. When he did his first lead in Out Of Sync I laughed at him but now he's lot better. He was good in Edison Force, S.W.A.T., Deep Blue Sea, Kingdom Come and here in Deliver Us From Eva.Critic are being too hard on this movie. Of course it's predictable but what movie isn't these days. I wasn't checking my watch every minute so that has to be a good sign. It was pretty funny at times and it was sweet. As a retelling of Shakespeare's Taming Of The Shrew its pretty good. As a product of Black Cinema its one of the best romantic comedies of recent memory. There I said it.
Surprisingly Warm!!!
posted on 08 Dec 2006Despite criticism, this manages to deliver a bit of comedy and drama. Gabrielle Union gives a standout performance as the unbelievable Eva Dandridge who needs someone like Ray to knock her from her high horse but she's that way cos she's taken too many knocks from life. She is pure evil. LL Cool J is a bit too neat or not too expressive maybe it's the role maybe not but he cuts a slightly bland figure. Between the two of them, they manage to create a cracking chemistry that sizzles and makes all other characters pale by comparison. This movie was touching and sincere for a Black movie(a trait which is played down in most Black flicks), there's been a recent departure from the gangsta and hood epics or drugs and money flicks. Gabrielle Union was a delight to watch as ice queen Eva Dandridge(who's been jilted by a one time-fiancée), watching over her sisters with a ruthless passion and closely guarding her heart against intrusion. I kinda felt sympathy when I realised she'd given up on her life (when her parents died)to raise and care for her siblings, but the time came to take a backseat, she moved on and was woman enough to breach the gap she'd created between her siblings and their men.LL Cool J was smooth as the player who took her on a bet. I admire the way he brought Eva down to earth, that's what women respect in a man. Knowing your own self worth, never kowtowing to them but meeting them at the right point and giving in only if need be. This may sound sexist but show me a sista or woman who'd respect her man if he yessed to her all the time. Not One!!Gabrielle and J simply stole the movie, the supporting cast are just supporting(no insults meant), there was no one who came close to touching the two leads not because they were the stars but they infused strength and dynamism into their respective roles, they breathed life into them...It's good to see Black movies with a forte like this; it portrays us as intelligent and coming of age, which we did centuries ago anyway!!LEAD ME INTO THIS!!!!10/10
Fresh new comedy
posted on 25 Oct 2006The movie started off very funny, but at the end it turned out to be a romance. I think this is a great date movie, because you saw all the smiling couples walking out and kissing. This isn't a "chick" flick and can viewed by a group of girls and guys. The age group I would say this is aimed at is 15-24 females.
Very Good Movie
posted on 13 Oct 2006I love this movie. It has a great cast and it is absolutely hilirious. Sure it's no "Soul Food" or "Waiting To Exhale" but its still a very good movie. This is definiatly Gabrielle Unions best role yet. She should have more starring roles, other than her usual supporting roles. I would have cast some one other than LL Cool J to play the role of Ray {no offense he did a great job} I just would have cast some one like Morris Chesnut in that role. The supporting cast was really good. Very good acting by Duane Martin. I really cannot think of one negative thing about this film. It really is a good movie.Grade- A+
Pleasantly surprised by race!
posted on 13 Sep 2006Great flick, I thought the supporting cast was pretty funny. Conditioned to expect a Black film, I instead got a romantic comedy which just happened to involve Black Americans. Kudos to the writers and director for portraying a strong Black woman as if it were the most natural thing in the world. This is not *at all* a preachy film, and it's not about the "Black experience", but that very silence is a powerful example of what life in America SHOULD be like for all of us - no racism or sexism implied or applied. It's refreshing. Not only that, but it's a pretty funny flick. Definitely worth a view.
Enjoyable,Very good
posted on 08 Aug 2006I never got a chance to go see this movie when it hit the theaters. I rented it not knowing what to expect. After watching it on DVD, I can say that I would not have minded paying the price of the movie ticket to see this movie. It's not all that glamorous, but what it is is a nice feel-good, respectable movie. Gabrielle Union does a nice job playing a rude, obnoxious, man-hating sister by the name of Eva. At times she takes it over the top, but that's acting and that's what she gets paid to do. Eva is bent on taking care of her little sister's who all lean to her for advice instead of their men. The sister's love Eva and listen to her as if her word were the gospel. The men, on the other hand, hate her guts and want nothing more than to see her leave town. She often interferes with her sisters' relationships and makes it a point to drive her sisters' men crazy. So, in order to bring proper order to their respected relationships the men plot to get Eva out of their lives. Thus the need for Ray (LL Cool J). Ray is a smooth-talking playa with serious game. The men talk Ray into dating Eva to get her out of their lives. Ray agrees and thus the story begans with two people falling in love with each other that weren't supposed to fall in love. That's when things get messy for Ray and Eva. Some parts of the movie were a little outrageous and the ending was not the best, but all in all it was still a pretty good movie. I've read some of the reviews on this movie and other movies as well. My thing is that if you want real life situations, go watch a drama or a real life story. This is comedy...comedy's not supposed to be real. It's really an escape from reality. Don't we all need that right about now? Anyway, besides the ending, this movie was well done with the supporting actors doing a great job of playing out their respected roles. Furthermore, the women in this movie are pretty fine. Also, LL did a nice job playing Ray. I have a lot of respect for him as an actor. He didn't over play his part, but he made it believable.

Nice Movie Overall
posted on 15 Jun 2009Another movie base on William Shakespeare - The Taming of the Shrew but this time a black and older people version. (No racism intended) Three Friends hired Ray to escort Eva, so that she would be out of their marriage life after she influence too much on their wife.Though I have seen this in Ten Things I Hate About You, I still very much enjoying this movie and somewhat surpass my expectation. LL Cool J is great here and the flow of the movie is just right.Overall this is a good adaptation.Recommendation: If You Are Over 25 Watch This, Younger Watch 10 Things I Hate About You.Rating: 6.5/10 (Grade: C+)
