One movie i would definitely see again...
posted on 11 Jul 2009This movie was probably one of the best horror/thriller movies I have seen in a long time. I enjoyed all the effects and most of all the story line. The story line may sound really awful but it was worth it sitting there for an hour and a half. I don't know what it was about this movie that made me enjoy it so much. Was it the fact that Jensen Ackles was acting in it or the fact that the story line kept you wanting to know the end. I rented this movie because I wanted to find a good horror movie and scare myself. It may have not scared me but it made me want to watch it again. Shannyn Sossamon played her part brilliantly well as the other actors. To be honest I didn't except this movie to 'blow me away' but it did its job which was to entertain me. The ending may have just ended but other than that it was worth it. It defiantly was a film I would go out an buy.
Devour
posted on 01 Jul 2009Devour is the latest horror directed by David Winkler starring (Jenson Ackles), (Shannyn Sossaman) and (Dominique Swain), its a story of Jake Gray who is a college student with a shaky past and family relationship, him and his friends stumble across "The Pathway" a private Internet game, it is a success and a help at first, but spirals out of control when Jake begins to see premonitions and visions of his friends and family, what does it all mean?? The theme of Devour was very exciting added in was a young hopeful cast that haven't appeared in any big name films. I first thought what an original idea a computer game called "The Pathway" with something not right, very original and witty idea. Jenson Ackles did not sell the role of his character, the situations and reactions with some of the characters where not believable, Swain put in a mediocre performance as the bad girl, where as in "Tart" as the good girl she sold the role.Disappointing film, considering the build up and such an original idea. Could have been so much more and a movie to add to the must see list, not the must see the idea but forget watching it list!
Hmm....
posted on 22 May 2009I was a bit surprised at the bad/mediocre reviews Devour has been dished out. I, personally, enjoyed the movie immensely. I originally watched Devour, I admit, because I am a serious Jensen Ackles fan and from the cover/description it looked like an extremely promising movie. The movie has a heavy theme of duality, the fine line between right and wrong, and the choices we have to make. As for the storyline itself, it jumped around a bit. It gave us one concept to grasp, and then an entirely different one, so on and so on, until the ending brought them all together and everything made sense. It was chilling and macabre as you'd expect from a horror film. It does get slightly gory in some places, but it fits with the movie and was tactfully executed.Add the fact that it was a low-budget film to begin with, and I am thoroughly impressed.
Not bad, but not one of the greats
posted on 14 May 2009I didn't think that this film was horrible but it wasn't one of the greatest horror films I've seen either. I've been a fan of Jensen Ackles for a while and I think I liked the movie more than most would because I did go in wanting to see him.The plot wasn't bad, but I felt that it could have been a much better film if they had taken a few plot twists in different ways. I did notice that they seemed to stumble into mythology and religious concepts, but then they would get them wrong and screw them up with no explanation. Also the plot seemed to jump and skip at random places. Plus, I predicted a few things before the ending rolled around. The Acting was good, especially from Jensen Ackles who plays the lead. A few times I thought it was overdone, from everyone on the cast, but overall it was great. You were able to like and dislike the character at the same time, which is not an easy feat for an actor, and Jensen did it well.I recommend this film if you are a fan of anyone in it. You are always more willing to like a film if you are a fan of an actor and like them no matter what they do.
This Pathway leads to a crappy film
posted on 05 Mar 2009Jake Grey (Jensen Ackles of the hit TV show "Supernatural" and "My Bloody Valentine 3D") gets drawn into a seemingly demonic game called 'the Pathway' that his friends, whom are already addicted to the game, sign him up for it. Now he's stuck on a path that may have disastrous consequences. While you'd be forgiven for thinking this movie would be akin to similarly-themed horror films such as "Brainscan" or "Arcade", the actual plot device of 'the Pathway' game falls into the background (whether this is due to numerous rewrites I don't know) as the film goes in a decidedly different path of demons/possession. This would be fine and all if it was even remotely well-done. It's not. Instead we're 'treated' to a mish-mash of half-baked ideas that are very silly and banally done. Of course screenwriters Adam and Seth Gross would epically fail again with their next film, the much-maligned adaptation of the DOA video game series, but somehow even that disaster was more watchable than this one.Eye Candy: Noelle Reno gets topless and Jenn Griffin shows her assMy Grade: D-Where I saw it: Showtime Beyond
88 minutes of my life wasted.
posted on 07 Feb 2009I watched this movie, pay per view, with my wife. She fell asleep halfway through it. Later, after it was over, and she had woken up, she asked me what had happened during the last half of the movie. After some hemming and hawing, as I couldn't quite think yet how to summarize the way the story unfolded, I came up with an answer, the perfect answer. The most truthful and honest way to sum up what happened in this movie.I said "It doesn't matter."My wife didn't believe me. She pressed me for something more enlightening. Eventually I convinced her. The energy I would have spent remembering and summarizing just wasn't worth it. This movie might just as well have been 88 minutes of television static.
Really Good B Movie..I expected this to be awful, but was surprised when it wasn't...
posted on 24 Jan 2009This movie is very similar to movies such as Cry Wolf, The Ring 1 and 2, and Stay Alive. In all these movies a character does something (like visit a website, watch a video, play a video game, or start a rumor) which starts into motion a chain of events (usually unleashing something evil) that result in a blood bath. While this is probably considered a B movie, I thought it was a fairly good B movie. It sure wasn't the best horror movie I've ever saw, but it did entertain me. I thought Jensen Ackles (Jake) and Dominique Swain (Dakota) did an excellent job portraying and acting their parts... Shannyn Sossamon (Marisol)was just mediocre in her acting skills. I found her acting kind of bland and boring. The movie itself started off really well. It was set up well, but then the further along it got the worse it got. If a different person were playing Marisol, if they'd kept the beginning and the basis of things being connected to the website, but found a way to make various parts and the ending more realistic and added a bigger budget to pull all of that off, then this had the potential to of been a great movie. However, they did not and this is what we are stuck with. Which is, a really good, but not great B movie...All and all this movie is not a complete waste of time. I think it was highly entertaining, but like someone else said it is no masterpiece. If you start the movie with unrealistic expectations you will be disappointed. It is best to have no expectations at all and decide for yourself. I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes horror movies or thrillers, but if you don't then it's not for you.
Interesting
posted on 15 Dec 2008OK, here's what I think. I think it's a good storyline but it didn't transfer to screen very well. The only thing I really liked about this movie was Jensen Ackles. In my opinion he's too good of an actor to be in a movie like this. I mean not genre wise but it looks like it was made by an amateur. So, I did like the plot but I didn't like how it was played out. Also, it was cool to see Jensen act with his dad! Even Jensen pretty much said in an interview that it didn't come out like he was expecting it to. He said he kept thinking "What the hell is going on?" So, we're not alone. Raise your standards a bit Jen! They should have made it more like Supernatural haha
"Wake me from this nightmare...please."
posted on 30 Jul 2008~Spoiler~ That's what I kept repeating to myself during the course of this movie. Devour (which should have been titled The Pathway, or Brainscan 2: Electric Boogaloo) is another flick where the devil is reaching out to people through a computer. If you've seen Brainscan you can pretty much avoid this movie. It has about the same premise. A computer game called The Pathway is messing with people's minds and causing them to commit brutal slayings and then some self-mutilation. If this plot isn't radical enough, it turns out the game is merely a tool to search for a chosen child. I guess the devil watched The Last Starfighter. The only good things I have to say come from the acting. The film features quite a few up and comers for a straight to video flick. Jensen Ackles is in the lead, and Dominique Swain and Shannyn Sossamon are nice to look at. William Sadler is completely wasted, however. Devour also has one of the stupidest endings I've seen a while. Not every movie needs a "twist" ending.
A fairly good occult thriller.
posted on 28 Jul 2008This is a fairly good occult thriller in the tradition of THE OMEN and ROSEMARY'S BABY. I thought it was a little like BRAINSCAN and THE DUNWITCH HORROR with a slight Lovecraftian feel to it. It was better than many of the low budget offerings in this genre. I felt they could have done a little more with it and the ending but it was satisfactory. The acting was fine and the story kept my interest. I think it is also a little like the books by EDWARD LEE which I really enjoy. I rented this DVD because it has Dominique Swain in it, who I think of as the new LOLITA, but I was pleasantly surprised that the movie kept my attention all the way through. The acting is fine, along with the story, soundtract, cinematography etc. It has the feeling of an A movie.
Hard to really recommend
posted on 02 Jul 2008"Devour" is a somewhat decent but not that impressive entry.**SPOILERS**Troubled by strange visions, college student Jake Grey, (Jensen Ackles) begins to find that his friends Dakota, (Dominique Swain) and Conrad Dean, (Teach Grant) are becoming a little unpredictable. Hearing of a website known as The Pathway, they log on and find that it makes them perform special tasks in real life. As it starts, it takes over their lives and become more and more of an influence, it forces them into greater realms of despair. When the events soon turn deadly, he turns to Marisol, (Shannyn Sossamon) for help in understanding what's happening to them, and it soon leads to a demonic cult that has plans for him, and he has to fight his sanity and his past to stop them from harming him more. The Good News: This one here didn't have too many good parts to it. One of the good things about it is that there's a really creative and unique story to it. The idea of the website and what it does is pretty neat. From the innovative way of getting involved in life to how greatly it does, there's nothing about it that doesn't work out because of that, and it gives off a really nice atmosphere to the beginning and makes it a little creepier. There's also some really good parts to come from this, especially the flash images that are happened upon for no reason. The demon in the basement, the several ones where the killings are glimpsed and even the other demons had here are really great, all done through what's been a great opportunity to include them. The inclusion of the black arts at the end makes that fun as well, giving it some rather colorful moments as well. The last good part is he few kills that bring about bloodshed, as there's a couple who get their tongue cut off, a stabbing in the chest, a tree branch impaled in the forehead and a few gunshots. These here are all that work for the film. The Bad News: There wasn't a whole lot wrong as there wasn't much to it anyway. The fact that there's never really a feeling that it is really big and expansive, more here being just the really slow and laid back feeling given off. It doesn't have much to it to really get into it namely the beginning, which is dull, action-less and really slow-going, and the trend really continues on throughout the whole film of being too laid back to get really interesting. That manages to be one of the biggest flaws, as is the fact that there's a really huge jump in how the film goes from the storyline about the website to about the black arts and Satanism. It's an incredibly large leap to make, seeing as they really belong in two separate plots rather than being mixed together. The last part is the relative lack of bloodshed. Despite a reasonable body count and the few kills mentioned above that take a little amount out of the film, all of those listed are really only aftermath, with just one or two deaths actually witnessed being happening while the film plays out. That really isn't a good factor for the film, making it a really dull and ineffectual film to have to cop out like that. Had this done something with the deaths, as well as beefed up the action in this, it would've been something, otherwise it's just there. The Final Verdict: Without a whole lot going on for this one either way, it really stands up as being good or terrible in any direction. Not really a set group who would enjoy this one, but the easiest group would be those who enjoy low-budget direct to video fare, otherwise this one is incredibly tough.Rated R: Graphic Violence, Graphic Language and Brief Nudity
Devour
posted on 20 Jun 2008I have just watched this movie, and I am not quite sure what to say about it. It seemed interesting enough, although I did think it was about werewolves. It was not. It was about the devil. To be quite honest, I was confused throughout the entire movie...and I'm not easily confused. The people I watched it with did not even know what was going on, and we were not even drinking yet. To continue, the movie begins with a guy, Jake, I suppose, in the woods hunting. It continues on with Jake admitting that he has "daymares," or, scary dreams in the day time. After he admits that, no one is really sure if he is committing the crimes or if he is just insane. His friends, victims of the devil's possession, were scary before they were even touched by the devil. The whole point of this movie was to prove that the devil can get into the internet and spread his word. Quote from the movie, "Imagine if Hitler had the internet." Yeah, it's like that. However, the scariest part of the movie is the oh-so-obvious Oepidus complex at the end of the movie. Jake finds out that his lover, Marisol, is really his mother. The movie ends with the police finding Jake surrounded by bodies and a mouth full of blood. The ending question that Jake's voice-over asks makes the audience even more confused. There is no real resolution as he is placed in the back of a police jeep. This movie was not that good... unless you want to have a good laugh.
a game. a guy.
posted on 04 Jun 2008I love this movie! mostly because Jensen Ackles is in it ( XP )but it's really great. many of my friends don't get the ending but if u pay attention u get it. So, the movie is about Jake Gray. He and his friends starts to play a game on the internet, the Pathway. Later on things start to happened. Weird things. I guess u can say the movie's kind of religious, with the devil and all, but it's not like OVER-religious. So if you're not religious you shouldn't be disturbed. It contains some gross scenes, like pencils in ears etc.i think it's great to see Jensen Ackles and Martin Cummins play together again. And they both like hate each other, just like in Dark Angel (a TV-show)I think u should watch it. :D
starts OK, loses ground pretty quickly though
posted on 03 May 2008Has anyone ever thought of making a horror movie that's consistently good from beginning to end? Not any more, apparently. Devour starts out with a young man that suffers from waking nightmares, and as it goes along he finds out why he's having these waking nightmares, and it has something to do with a computer reality game, at least, sort of. Along the way his friends and family pile up like cord wood. Turns out that he might have something to do with some evil cult that was stopped from doing evil things years ago but is now gaining strength again. Bummer. Some of this isn't bad, and the rest of it is merely mediocre straight-to-video horror. There isn't a "normal" unattractive or merely homely person in the movie, which is one of my biggest gripes about movies anymore....not everybody looks perfect. I got this as a result of a "4 for $20" sale at a local video store and I had three I really wanted and needed one to get the sale price though, so for that I suppose it's not that bad. The price tag for the new DVD though is certainly not worth it. If you REALLY want to see this, still, just rent it or buy it used. It is better than a lot of what passes for horror these days but it's no prize. 6 out of 10.
One of those new devil-uses-computers movies. Average.
posted on 15 Apr 2008Take a dot.com movie (good looking youngsters barely leaving the teen age using computers), add a bit of Devil for spice, shake it a bit (with shaky text like in se7en, but none of the subtlety) and drop a small bit of The Game and you get Devour.I can't say than any of the actors played bad, but since all of the characters where cliché they didn't really need to make an effort. The script is average, with the usual inconsistencies we now expect from a teenage audience horror-like movie.Horror-like because there is no horror in the entire film. Not if you count actors with a lot of red die on them showed for fractions of a second scary. And in the end there is something interesting, we find who the bad guy is, he suddenly appears and starts explaining things to the main character. We now see that it is a rather known actor (even if he did play in bad series) and we start expecting at least a notch of a bit of a granule of quality inserted into the movie. No, he just dies.Watch this only if you are really bored.
I liked it for what it was, solid B+
posted on 28 Mar 2008When I checked out "Devour" from the video store, it was because my mom was out of town and my dad and I wanted to have a fun creepy movie night. The characters where a little clichéd, but that's to be expected at this point. Though many people disagree with me, I quite liked the ending. I thought it was a major and unexpected twist, and made you ask if it really was all in his sick mind. The one thing that really got to me was, though I truly enjoy horror films, I don't like excessive gore. This movie had a few scenes of truly grotesque stuff that was mostly for a scare and I didn't particularly need to see. While it did make sense within the plot (unlike many horror films where they add gore simply for a cheap scream) it was a little too graphic for my taste. If you like this sort of thing, however, you will probably enjoy this movie. The acting was quite decent, and I'm incredibly tough on actors. Jensen Ackles has a lot of talent, and I quite like his new show "Supernatural", which I recommend to those who, like me, like horror without gore. While Devour wasn't the best movie ever, it was certainly better than the endless sequels and cheesy horror flicks, "Ring 2", "Resident Evil", and anything made by M. Night Shyamalan.
not the best movie i have seen BUT
posted on 20 Mar 2008not one of the worse too. i had a good time watching it. i, too, saw the movie because of Jensen Ackles. i think he's on the right path. anyway, didn't expected much and i got a lot more than i thought i would. i think that the shooting and the directing were good. the acting was OK for some and batter for others (Ackles was good for example), but the script was a little lame for my taste. although it has it's "shining" moments here and there. to make things short- fun movie to pass the time. maybe in cinema it's batter. i enjoyed the watching and i don't feel like i wasted my time. so, for everyone who's board, rent it. u'll find it's not that bad as u probably expected...
Started out good but then got lame and then a complete flop!
posted on 14 Mar 2008I liked the trailer for this movie so I bought it.I liked how it started out.Good special effects and got really interesting even though it's not an original idea.I thought all the actors playing these roles were really good. At first I assumed Jake and Dakota were a couple and not just friends,so it made no sense the way they were acting towards each other, and I didn't like the way Jake was treating her since she seemed to have a thing for him.I really liked the Conrad character(played nicely by Teach Grant) and was hoping he would have been around until the end.It was disappointing that he was killed off so early on since there was a lot more about him which should have been explored. This movie started to annoy me once the mystery unfolded and Jake(Played very well by Jensen Ackles)found out who he really was and the truth about his parents. This part of the story was way too rushed and not explained properly. There were a lot of holes in the story I liked Jake's uncle. His character was also a local cop and I was convinced he would survive and help solve the mystery, but instead gets killed in a stupid, senseless way.His uncle had absolutely no connection to the pathway and wasn't hated by the main 3 characters who were playing the game. The part that ruined it for me the most and why i'm selling this DVD is the pathetic ending! First the stupid events leading up to Jacob's Satanic past, for instance some woman and her unborn child being sacrificed by some guy who wanted some kind of power. The next thing you know, this woman was still alive and working as a nurse, and was the same age as her son who was supposedly stolen and raised by a couple pretending to be Christians. It never fully explained or showed how his adoptive mother(if that's who she even was)ended up in a wheelchair and at some nursing home. The tension between Jake and his adoptive father(if that was who he really was also) was just abruptly added without a proper explanation either. This movie has some of the worst character development that i've seen. Now the part of this movie that was the worst and laughable was that the devil in this horrible story was a woman.Oh my God could it get any more stupid. The Devil is no more a woman then God himself is! If the devil is a woman and his real mother was also a woman then how the hell was he conceived? At this point the movie was a flop. The cheesy she/he/creature with tits scaring the kids who were playing the pathway was anything but frightening.Had the devil been male(like HE actually is) this movie may have made more sense as to Jake possibly being born out of Satanic ritual abuse. But if this was the case, you would need a real flesh and blood man and woman. It would have made more sense if his father (who was formerly involved in the occult anyway) had an affair with the woman posing as a nurse.Maybe she and her unborn child were sacrificed during a Satanic mass and then born again with certain abilities. His father could have remarried and stole the baby and raised him.Conveniately the wife gets in an accident and is crippled, and the grown Jacob is having nightmares about his past and who is mother really is.The game pathway is an interesting and good way for the devil's followers to devour souls end of story. Anyhow this is not how they wrote it.They even had the nerve to throw in at the end in the last few seconds before the end credits a stupid idea that the entire movie was all in Jake's head and that he somehow killed off all those people and got away with it and finally got caught. And what was with that stupid line "the devil couldn't kill her own/our own child",I mean what was that all about. No matter what angle they used the plot made absolutely no sense and wasn't even based on actual facts so This is why it was a total flop! Of course somebody else may have their own interpretation of the events of this movie with all the holes in this story and I would love to hear it!I gave this movie a 3 out of 10 because it was a bad script with a talented cast. What a waste of good talent!
Awesome
posted on 10 Mar 2008I just love Jensen Ackles so, naturally, i went out and saw this movie and loved it!!! Can you scream 'hot' loud enough? The usual teenage thing- hot boy, chick put together to spell disaster! Put a couple of deaths, gory scenes and creepy dreams in the mix and you have yourself a horror movie! Three teenagers join an internet game and weird stuff starts to happen. so Jensen goes searching for the answers and the ones that he finds are not he ones that he wanted! i just thought that it had a pretty good story line, it actually had a plot that you could follow, it wasn't one of those horror movies that you just cant understand!! Like the plot, the ending made so much sense! i loved it!!!it is one of those movies that i could watch so many times, it was that good!

Started out better than I expected but ended up worse than I could have imagined.
posted on 16 Aug 2009I did not rent this movie expecting greatness.I rented it for one reason and one reason alone: Jensen Ackles.I've very recently become a fan of his because of his awesome performance on the new WB show "Supernatural" and I was eager to check out some of his other work. But on to "Devour". I popped the DVD into the player expecting complete and utter schlock, made bearable only by the presence of Jensen. Surprisingly, it was better than that, at least at first. The premise was interesting and original enough to pique my interest, and as the events began to unfold I began to almost enjoy watching it.Then the strange and unnecessary plot twists started happening.I swear, from about 1/3rd of the movie to right near the end, the ENTIRE movie consists of the guy's friends and family members dying one by one and him dealing with their deaths. It gets kinda ridiculous after awhile. And the ending was just asinine. I won't go into it here because it just makes so little sense. Contrived plot twist after contrived plot twist. Then the whole thing ends with a completely ambiguous and unsatisfying fizzle. So yeah, the Jensen Ackles eye candy is pretty good (and he does the best he can with the mediocre material), but don't watch it for the plot or you'll be disappointed by the end.
