I laughed a lot in this movie
posted on 20 Aug 2009Okay Dickie Roberts Former Child Star was hilarious. The funny thing was is that all the child stars from the 70's and 80's were in this. It was the funny thing that was the song at the end and how he needs to get a childhood he never had back was really really funny and the thought of Sandler and Happy Madison Prouductions put this together to make Sandler and Spade movie with all the little Sandler and Spade actors which are mostly all of their movies were like John Lovitz and Micheal McDonald and even the thought to put Rob Reiner that was really funny. Okay so I have masterminded all the little things in this movie to make it 10/10. Sandler and Spade were in the writing and Production of this so they did awesome.
A faily disapointing half-wit flick
posted on 12 Aug 2009Ill be honest with you. I've never really enjoyed the humor that David Spade has done both in his previous films and in his days with SNL.I've never liked it but I've always wanted to because my chums would fall on the floor laughing. All this, and I never really got into it.So when my best mates and I decided to go see it, it was with some real hesitation that I handed over my money.... And with good reason. The humor ... sorry let me be more clear. The "humor" in this film isn't all that funny save for a few scenes. In all, I laughed about 6 times. And I mean real laugh outloud laughs during this film...But I can do that sitting at home watching an equaly lame show on the tele and save my hard earned cash.Wait till this film hits the air waves.. That way, you can watch it at home and be happy knowing that you didn't pay a dime to see it.
Another Fairytale Movie...With Real Former Child Stars!
posted on 29 Jul 2009David Spade is not funny! He is stupid. The coolest parts of the movie were when the real former child stars were playing cards and Greg Brady was betting memorabilia from the Brady Bunch. There was Screech from Saved By The Bell and Danny Bonaduce! Also Emmanuel Lewis beat up David Spade in a celebrity boxing match. Emanuel Lewis really has a black belt in karate. The tone of the movie changed from, "We don't want this creep living here!" to "We're glad you are here!" And the end of the movie song with all the former child stars was great. I believe this is Fred Rerun Berry's last role ever. I was waiting for Gary Coleman to say, "Whatchu talking about?" Or Ernest Thomas to start laughing in a high voice. Chris Knight did poke fun of his singing in an episode of the Brady Bunch.
Lot's of Laughs
posted on 27 Jul 2009Great David Spade movie with plenty of sarcasm. My 11 year old son and I laughed our ***** off. Good story line about what is important in life and the tragedy of child actors. Make sure you stay and see all yesterday's actors and actresses doing their spoof on the song "We are the World".
Finally a truly funny movie from Happy Madison!
posted on 23 Jul 2009I have never been a fan of any movies that Adam Sandler's production company had their hands in, and if I knew that before I probably wouldn't have rented this movie, but this movie is truly funny!Dickie Roberts was a child star of the 70's. Like most child stars, his star faded. Now, to get back into the spotlight, he needs to relive the childhood he never knew to prepare for a money audition. With the help of a family he rents, he prepares for the journey back to the stardom he craves. Some slow parts, but most parts are hilarious! I loved watching Webster beating the hell out of Dickie in Celebrity Boxing! And the song during the finale had me in stiches! If you were like me and watched all the old sitcoms after school in the 80's, you will love this movie! Try to see how many child stars you can recognize in their cameos!
The Moose Hole - Review of Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star
posted on 17 Jul 2009With American soldiers fighting over in Iraq and problematic situations across the world flashing across American television screens everyday, it is no wonder why the comedy has become the genre of choice amongst the movie-going public. Sitting back in a comfortable theater seat and learning to laugh once again has such an enlightened quality that we crave so much now. If only the comedies that were offered were worth laughing at, in a good way. Spring offerings like Shanghai Knights, Bringing Down the House, and Anger Management weren't worthy of the moderate acclaim and box office dollars they brought in. The summer season had much more tempting features with the likes of Bruce Almighty and Freaky Friday with only the gross-out third installment of the American Pie series, American Wedding, really paying off in the long run. Now as the box office begins to slow down after the last hurrah of the summer (Labor Day weekend), one has to wonder if any new releases can resurrect this failing genre? This is the story of Dickie Roberts, one of the most famous television child stars Hollywood had ever seen and how quickly he fell from the pinnacle of stardom. Dickie Roberts, at the age of six, became an over night sensation with his role on a charming television show thanks in part to his crooked smile and repetitive catch phrase `That's nucking futs'. But once the hit television was cancelled by the network, Dickie Roberts fell from the mind of the public and lost his career in the process. Now thirty years later, he desires to have the fame and love he once had so long ago but being a valet for a restaurant doesn't get you too much publicity. When the role of a life time becomes available to the former child star, he is willing to do anything to get it including hiring a family to live out the childhood he missed. But when the `perfect' family he hires is less then enthusiastic about his stay, Dickie must learn not only learn to be a child again but must also learn to love again to help his `foster' family. The story of Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star makes a mockery of the E! True Hollywood Story. The fact that just one episode of the acclaimed series is ten times more entertaining then this film should come as an embarrassment to the filmmakers. The more embarrassing fact is that the parody song that plays during credits is more humorous then the other eighty-two minutes of this feature. No wonder they tacked it on at the end! They featured all those child stars in order for the hate mail to go to them and not the studio. The cast of this live action film plays out much like one of a made for television feature, which is not always a good thing. Poor David Spade! The former Saturday Night Live! cast member, after the dud that was Joe Dirt, has become the John Lovitz of comedies. As an added bonus John Lovitz himself stars in the film along side Spade adding unnecessary emotional sadness to the film. But seriously for a moment, Spade, who is also a writer for the film, works out pretty well in the beginning but screeches (No pun intended for another former child star) around the half-way point. Granted he blurts out some humorous lines every now and again but he loses his charm and becomes corny and cheesy. Another sad sight in the film was Alyssa Milano's role as Dickie Roberts' on/off girlfriend. With such a wonderfully entertaining role on the WB's Charmed, it boggles the mind why such horrible roles are offered to her or why she even accepts them. Jon Lovitz isn't featured in this film as much as he probably should have and when he is seen, he really isn't funny. Now on to Dickie's `foster' family with each role being diagnosed instead of the performers as their names aren't recognizable (and with the film as it is, it is better for their careers that they aren't mentioned). The children are amazingly annoying from the beginning with crappy lines like `stranger danger' and `schiats' beings spoken by these sickingly cute kids every five seconds. More could be said about the family but nothing good, so better to take a breather from the constant ranting.Overall, Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star is a horrible disaster from beginning to end. Though not as disastrous as The Hulk and 2 Fast 2 Furious, the film doesn't give too many good qualities to talk about. How can this feature be called a comedy when barely a snicker was blurted out during the film's nearly two hour run? Any slightly entertaining moment that does peek out has been used in every trailer and television ad so many times that all charm is squeezed out of it. The creators of this feature should not only be labeled as failures but as perverts as well with a disturbing scene involving a twelve year old girl (who had obviously not reached maturity yet) sexually dancing to `I Want to be Bad'. Dickie Roberts does have its charming family moments but they are so few and far between that they really aren't worth mentioning. The bottom line is that Dickie Roberts makes a night watching Nick at Nite and TV Land look like must attend event. Here's hoping that the fall season isn't as disappointing as the first outing away from the summer heat.My Rating: ** out of 5 (Grade: D)
His Tagline Says It All **SPOILERS**
posted on 13 Jul 2009I went to see this movie, hoping that it would be a really fun-filled fare, I didn't expect it to be brilliant, but entertaining at the least. How wrong I was. The words predictable, boring, juviniel and BAD come to mind. You can tell what is going to happen five minutes into the film, everything from the audition at the beginning to the second he walks into the families home. So, seeing as it was so predictable, it was only a matter of waiting for something to happen, and when it finally did you were sorry it did happen. The humour was just awful, the jokes were mind numbingly stupid and it got so boring at times that I felt like drifting off to sleep in the movie theatre, but then I thought "What if I snoar?" so I had to find solice in playing with my drinks cup for an hour and a half.David Spade is awful, he tried to play some innocent child like character but was more like a gay pimp. Mary McCormack does manage to squeez in a couple of good moments, she was probably the only decent actor in the entire movie. Very bad celebrity cameos as well, made you think "Oh dear God what is going on?"I was glad when this movie ended, although you could tell it was rushed, with the dad disappearing like he did, even though you could tell two seconds after meeting him that he was going to. So oh yes, in true fashion style, the former child star realises that he doesnt need fame and fortune to be happy and marries her. Something slightly twisted in all of that considering she was meant to be playing his mother.Didnt like it, it wasnt a good way to kill two hours of your life, more like a good way to kill your soul.* out of 5
Okay movie
posted on 23 Jun 2009Uh, this movie was watchable for sure, but I wouldn't buy it if I were you. The plot line is about a Former Child Star (Dicky Roberts) who wants to relive his childhood, so a family adopts him... Pretty stupid plot line. The movie has it's few funny parts, but its nothing too hilarious. The first time I watched this movie, it was with one of my best friends at a movie theater. I absolutely loved it. I was 11 at the time I first saw it. so, it depends on how stupid your humor is. The movie is definitely worth watching, but also definitely not worth buying. If you want to see David Spade at his best, go see Tommy Boy, or Black Sheep... Something with Chris Farley. Although, I have had enough of this movie, I agree with the guy before me, it is a great family film.
5.00$ a rental X Rented 10 Times= HOLY CRAP
posted on 13 Jun 2009When this movie first came out on tape(&DVD), i rented it the first time for a movie night with a couple of friends, we watched it once...twice...three times (we pulled a all nigher). Next Week-End once...twice...three times, each time finding something new. Take A Break... Next Week-End= once... twice. yup, only got two times that week-end. Then one day when i was supervising a GR.1 Class over the lunch hour At a elementary school one of the kids put his hand up, asked if he could say something. Thinking it would be harmless, i said sure. So, he stands up... and does the WHOLE "Brick Wall, Water Fall, Dick..." So on and so-forth. Then, everyone started doing it. i would recommend it to Anyone.

FUN....
posted on 28 Apr 2009Sometimes it's okay to have a little fun. Sometimes it's okay to laugh and snort a little. But should you admit it to the world when the film is DICKIE ROBERTS FORMER CHILD STAR? I'm going to but that's only because I'm a tad bit brave and I sure time will tell and many will come to embrace this fun movie.Dickie Roberts (David Spade, The Adventures of Joe Dirt) was a former child star. At the age of 6 he had the whole world screaming `This is Nucking Futz' his signature line. After the show got cancelled poor Dickie was left out in the cold by everyone he loved. He grew up to be a valet at a trendy LA restaurant. Now Dickie wants more out of life and he thinks that begins with a role in a new Rob Reiner film. So to make a long story short he hires a family, to relive his childhood, so he can prepare for the role. This is when the fun and frivolity begins.DICKIE ROBERTS is the best thing that has come out of Happy Madison productions. It's smart and funny, and for the most part tries to keep the laughs coming. It's also the only Happy Madison film not to feature Adam Sandler and Rob Schneider. Hmm??What works in the film far outweighs what doesn't. I loved the celebrity-boxing match with Emmanuel Lewis; the stilt dance, and even the slip and slide scene. They all work, and make you laugh. Spade himself brings that lovable sarcasm and caustic wit to the screen. It's the best he's ever done, without Chris Farley. What doesn't work is that it gets incredibly bogged down with sentimentality. Who is the guy in Hollywood saying that these movies need all this fake drama? That the music needs swell, and lessons need to be learned? I just want a funny movie. DICKIE ROBERTS in not the worst offender, but it teeters pretty close to that line.Mary McCormack (Private Parts) is delightful as Grace, the mother with a heart of gold. She's the kind of actress that lights up screens and is vastly underrated. She has so much charisma and raw power. I wonder why Hollywood doesn't use her more. If I were a power player she's would be making 20 million and Julia Roberts would be a supporting player.Even the kids (Scott Terra and Erin Murphy) are pretty good. Murphy is far better than Terra but he has some really great scenes that work.I do question a scene in which a girl, who can't be more than ten, slinks around like a slut. I understand why the scene is in the movie. I just thought it was tacky and went on far too long. It's made everybody in my party squirm. But other than that, I recommend DICKIE ROBERTS for what it is. A fun movie, I also recommend you stay for the closing credits, you'll get to hear Marsha Brady well I won't tell you. But the scene also shows Fred `Rerun' Perry getting down. Some of the best closing credit moments I've ever seen and it beats having to watch stupid outtakes. If you're in the mood for a little light fun DICKIE ROBERTS FORMER CHILD STAR is a good movie for you.***1/2 out of 5
Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star
posted on 24 Apr 2009Dickie Roberts is the comic story of a famous little TV star who was famous for his saying this is "Nuking Futs!" Dickie is now a washed up actor who needs to relive the childhood years he lost by adopting a foster family. The story is of Roberts "David Spade" and his life as a regular person, when in reality he wants to become a star again also starring Mary McCormack, Scott Terra, Jenna Boyd and Alyssa Milano.Dickie Roberts is a light-hearted comedy not to be taken too seriously it's one of those predictable happy ending films but done very well. I like Spade but I thought this was going to be stupid more than genuine comedy but it was very funny. I enjoyed the acting from Scott Terra and Jenna Boyd playing Sam and Sally Finney the adopted families kids.I liked the cameos from Tom Arnold and Brendan Fraser to, very entertaining
Refreshingly fun. I appreciated the industry in-jokes!
posted on 29 Mar 2009It's sweet. It's gooey. It's ridiculously sentimental. It's a David Spade movie. What? This is nucking futs."Nucking futs" is indeed the trademark slogan that made young Dickie Roberts an enormously successful child star at the tender age of six. His mother (Doris Roberts, playing herself of course) used to audition Dickie for anything available--even Pippi Longstocking. But after his hit TV show was canceled, Dickie had to move on with his life. Now, he's a valet at a restaurant, who looks a heck of a lot like David Spade. And he only got hired as a valet in the first place because the manager of the place liked his show. This is what an opening mockumentary tells us, at least. It also tells us that in Dickie's free time (and he has a lot of it), he plays poker with other washed-up child stars, including Danny Bonaduce ("The Partridge Family"), Barry Williams ("The Brady Bunch"), Dustin Diamond (Screech from "Saved by the Bell"), and Corey Feldman ("Gremlins," "The Goonies," "Stand by Me"). But Dickie desperately wants to make it big, so he auditions for Rob Reiner's next big movie by getting Brendan Fraser to make a call for him (cameos galore). Dickie's agent (Jon Lovitz) even gives a liver to Rob Reiner (who needs another by the end of the film) as a bribe for an audition. The one problem with Dickie, however, is that he never had a normal childhood. Reiner doesn't think that Dickie could make a feature length film work because of this. Other than that, Dickie's got the part. So what does Dickie do? He rents a family for a month in an effort to re-live his childhood.Spade came up with the idea for "Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star," and it's a bit of an ode to himself. He was never a child star, but he got a part early on in one of the "Police Academy" sequels, then joined "Saturday Night Live." But he's never gotten to be as big a star as, say, Bill Murray or Chevy Chase or Adam Sandler (who produced the film with his company Happy Madison), et al. His last film was "Joe Dirt" (2001), which was beyond awful. This film is delightfully refreshing in light of Spade's other misadventures, which also include "Lost and Found" and "The Emperor's New Groove"--although that wasn't a misadventure, I actually liked it quite a bit. Too bad he wasn't *really* in it, if you know what I mean. The film is directed by Sam Weisman, who has handled Bernie Mac's FOX television show, a few episodes of "7th Heaven," and the 1999 remake of "The Out-of-Towners" starring Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn. It figures. A lot of "Dickie Roberts" wallows in television-esque sentimental moments--the kind where you think, Right, okay, is this supposed to be serious? But of course it's not, it's a David Spade movie. And as far as Spade's film ventures have gone thus far, "Dickie Roberts" is certainly his best.I must admit that some of the sentimental goo got to be a bit too much. I enjoyed the movie in-jokes (I always do), and the cameos were delightful (Alyssa Milano is credited right under Spade, but even her small role in the film is nothing more than a cameo--although she does show more skin than anyone else, so maybe there's a clause in her contract...).The contrived romance between Dickie and his rented "mother" is awfully unbelivable, but so was the relationship in "Happy Gilmore" and "Billy Madison" and any film Adam Sandler touches in any way, shape or form. (Even "Punch-Drunk Love" had its moments where you had to stop and wonder what Emily Watson saw in him.)But that didn't bother me very much because I liked this movie. Spade has created a smarmy but sweet character who--unlike a lot of Sandler's characters (i.e. "The Waterboy")--isn't terribly annoying and, in the end, actually makes a gradual change in character. I liked "Happy Gilmore" more than this, but when it comes to, say, "The Waterboy," I didn't laugh at all--and I laughed a lot at "Dickie Roberts."I also enjoyed getting to hear the end credits song. You'll never guess who says the F-word. Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!3.5/5 stars.- John Ulmer
Fun Flick
posted on 11 Mar 2009Dickie Roberts Former Child Star is a great, oddly touching story that is perfect for David Spade. With real former child stars making cameo's(Leif Garrett, "Screech" form Saved By The Bell, Danny Bonaduce and a whole host of others. John Lovitz is pretty good as Sidney Wernick, Dickie's ever-faithful manager, and Alyssa Milano from Charmed is impressive as Dickie's sometimes girlfriend Cyndi.Mary McCormack is great as Dickie's "foster mom", who is not in the least impressed. "Sally" and "Sam" are also pretty good as Dickie's "brother and sister".Dickie teaches his new family what is important and helps them realize their problems, while the family helps Dickie realize that he was never really happy, and all he wanted was love.Along with great jokes, physical humour and quick wit, this film is a great movie to sit back and have a laugh with the family.I would give it 6/10
Guilty fun
posted on 07 Mar 2009Saw this last night for the first time. I know I shouldn't have liked this movie -- all the elements of the movie are sub-standard, but somehow... it turned out okay(ish).I guess it all boils down to whether you can bear David Spade or not. I find him hit and miss, sometimes grinding and annoying, at other times hilarious. Luckily, he is mostly the latter in Dicky Roberts. The story is trite and unbelievable, that almost goes without saying. But I believe the biggest problem is that it wasn't structured well enough to take advantage of the concept. I would have liked to see Dicky start off as a baby and "grow up" at an accelerated rate to experience childhood, i.e. squeeze 15 years of childhood into 2 months. But instead it played out like a series of Disney-fied SNL skits.AND STILL it was enjoyable. That's the frustrating part. Half-baked plot lines that were thrown in and then forgotten, substandard direction, cliché and formulaic, but it got a lot of laughs out of me. Go figure.
This is a quirky feel good comedy
posted on 07 Mar 2009I have to say that the first review is completely unfair. I have just been to see this movie, and I really enjoyed it. I have to admit, I only went to see the former child stars singing at the end, and wasn't expecting much, because in general anything to do with Adam Sandler is appalling. David Spade manages to bring actual sensitivity to some issues which do face children, and adults alike. He manages to take an awful character, and turn him into a nice person. Yes, I realise that it's the aim of the movie, and even that it's been done before, but this movie succeeds where others have failed so badly, because by the end, you really do empathise with the character. There wasn't too much inappropriate humour, and it's a film I would be confident that children and adults alike could enjoy, whether they knew the uncredited stars or not. I really would check it out, maybe not if you like normal Adam Sandler style pap, but if you just want a feel good comedy, with some easy laughs, and a catchy tune at the end, this is it. Don't think too much into the story line, that isn't what movies like this are about!
Overall I felt it was enjoyable but...
posted on 09 Feb 2009I gave it a 6 because it made me laugh out loud a couple times but the movie is not without some problems. The True Hollywood Stories parody was funny and the movie started off well but really drifted off after the adopted family came in. The real "former child stars" used in the movie were just not funny. They were kind of painful to watch actually (especially the poker scenes). I know Bonaduce and Feldman can be funny but I really didn't like the rest of those people when they were in their prime. Perhaps they would have been funnier if the script had been developed more.I'll have to watch it again when I'm not blind drunk to be see if it makes me laugh without chemical assistance.
This was a great movie.
posted on 24 Jan 2009Okay...Okay- critics have given this movie bad reviews. This movie however, is one of Sandler's best investments- and the reason why even Brendan Fraser wanted a role in the movie is because- it's not your average comedy. Yes, it does have some humor. But, the script Dickie needs to make his come back has a deeper meaning. I went into this movie not only saying 'Okay, get to the three boobed joke' or 'the turd in a bag' joke.' But, I was also a teenage guy, around 16 years old- right before I went to this movie, I was being a normal teenage guy- going to bad sites, talking back to my parents and wanting to get laid as soon as possible! Yeah, that was me alright another Dickie Robertson. Dickie in the beginning of the movie, wasn't only a child star down on his luck- he saw the world in his own view. He thought that coming back into fame would make him have a better life again. He was alot like me, when I first entered the theater. But, by the end of the movie, not only did Dickie have an epiphany knowing what life was truly about, so did I. At first I couldn't believe it? A David Spade, and Adam Saandler movie that teaches a moral? In that theater, I grew up- I was no longer the kid- I was an adult. I couldn't believe it, but I exited the theater differant than when I came in. I exited mature- for the first time. And I found out that 'it's not a "million dollars" that's important, but what has been staring you in the face all along.' So, I would give this film a A+, not only does it have comedy, it also has a bigger meaning in hand. This is not one of Adam Sandler's regular movies like 'Little Nicky' and 'The Waterboy.' But more along the lines of 'Big Daddy' and 'Mr.Deed's.' In which it's more than a comedy- it's a life lesson. And I left that theater mature- and I suggest you to go....see for yourself- this movie is the best movie of September-
A waste of good film and time!
posted on 12 Jan 2009I must agree with the comments from Canada. I've never thought that David Spade was remotely amusing and I don't understand why people find him talented at all. Maybe this prejudiced me against the movie but I thought this was one movie that didn't need to get made.

A Trip back to uncomplicated times....
posted on 20 Aug 2009Call me a nostagic sap..but I really enjoyed this flick. While David Spade is not among the list of all time greatest actors..he can succeed in making you laugh at pure silliness. The movie had a plot which had a lesson in being proud of who you are and too stand up for yourself. Though the language may not be for young children, I wouldn't have a problem letting children over 8 watch it. Undoubtedly the best part of the film was the ending..with a slew of actors from the past including the Brady kids, Eddie Munster, Danny Partridge, the crew from 'What's happening', just to name a few. There were literally about 100 actors who we have known from shows in the 60s, 70's, and 80's. Even Ernie was there. Unfortunately, for the younger generation, it was lost on them. For some older folks, Leif Garrett was to us, what "Eminem" is to twenty-year olds. If only David Soul was included in the plot. Soul, according to Dickie in the beginning of the film..was his father, but it was only wishful thinking. I do have one issue which I would like to mention...if you enjoy seeing all your favorite actors from past decades..get the DVD. I purchased the tape, and would really enjoy seeing the extras. I hope we get to see more of Leif and the others again real soon.
