Good funny movie with a lot of action

posted on 20 Aug 2009

Here we're not talking about a noir movie remake, nor Takaski Miike movies. D.O.A. (Dead or Alive) is the video game from Tecmo adaptation (games went on Playstation 1, Playstation 2 then on Xbox and Xbox 360).Well, the plot is fairly useless: fighters are invited in a sort of tournament and some thieves get into it to steal some money. As a matter of fact, an evil plot arises ! (With an old and used Eric Roberts, playing the really bad guy.) What is fun about this movie is that there are gorgeous women fighting in some tiny suit (anyway, it's the "marque de fabrique" of the video game) but they are not as physically impossible as they are in the game. There are also a lot of actions scene that I liked because it was really over the top, actors always posing and bullettime effects being used in a comic way. I'm not sure kung-fu purists will like it but if you like fighting movies from time to time, you might appreciate it. So D.O.A. is not to be taken seriously and I think that people who made this movie really thought about it too. It's kind of a family action movie (as blades cut clothes and trees but not people - no blood here) and more a good beer, chips & friends action movie with a lot of laughs inside. It's not a spoof movie though it has a lot of common with this genre, it has beautiful girls, a lot of action and besides one scene at the end of the movie (the dramatic one that cut the movie momento), it's really a fast and fun ride.

Would have been better with no Buddha's statues

Its a good movie. But It is absurd to see that directors have used Lord Buddha's pictures everywhere in the movie. They say it gives an oriental feeling. Seeing Buddha's statues get destroyed and having Buddha statues in the bed room where people have sex, would NOT give an oriental feeling.. its disgusting to see that one of the world's greatest philosophers is being used in such a lowly way.We as true Buddhists who respect all the religions in the world, are sad to see this. By doing such things you don't harm our philosophy, but you would harm yourself.MAY NOBLE TRIPPLE GEM GUIDE YOU AND BLESS YOU FOREVER!

what a movie you have to see it to believe it it amazing what a wonderful piece of trash. its like your best hong kong film and james bond movie with a blend of xbox game movie mentality. you get a kick ass chick flick in the Charlie's angles mould.it may be the worst movie made this year but if so bring it on i say. cory yeun has made a blinder its as much fun as the transporter. the fight scenes for this are great, and inventive with tongue firmly in cheek.or should i say cheeks. holly valance steals the show, with a body to die for and a real sense of humor.plus all time bad guy eric roberts hamming it up with a twinkle in his eye. see it on the biggest screen possible asap.

Not an Epic, But One Really Explosive Flick!

Many have criticized Corey Yeun and what he did with the DOA movie. I would if I were a fan. But Corey wasn't expecting to make a master-piece, and neither were I. When I saw the trailer I immediately took interest in the film. I searched the net and found details etc about the game and movie. When it came out in Australia I was probably the first in cinema (maybe :) ).Basically it follows the story of Christie, an assassin and thief (playewd by Holly Valance - shes hot ), Tina Armstrong, a pro wrestler (Jaime Pressly) and ninja princess Kasumi (Sin City's Devon Aoki) as they are invited into the prestigious and secret Dead or Alive Tournament to prove they are the best fighter in the world and pick up a ten million dollar prize.Devon is strong and bold but quite dull as Kasumi, Jaime (Tina) is witty and tom-boyish and Holly (Christie) is sly and cold, but thats quite like they are in the DOA games. The acting may be off, Hayabusa is acted out like a wimp and Eric Roberts is casted as Donovan - totally wrong - but they both scrape through, barely. The plot is horrible. Everyone can agree on that. But the fight scenes are some of the best I've seen in Hollywood movies, the visuals are stunning, though I think the letters DOA just appear way too many times, and the run time is way too short. But this movie was not made for Oscar or Golden Globe potential, am I right? I think it was highly entertaining, I watch it over and over again (yes, I have the DVD) and awesome for a sleepover (I'm only 13 lol) or a party. Everyone will enjoy (unless ur a scrooge) and I think it doesn't deserve what critics say.I say change the scriptwriters, a few of the actors and bring on the SEQUEL! They aren't going to make one from what I've heard but if you like this movie email me ( x_adz_x@hotmail.com ) and help me create a petition to make a sequel. Sounds stupid, but I will do what it takes.I rate it 9/10 but it says I rate it 10/10 coz I'm only doing that to make the average over 5/10. Cya!

A Delightful Action-Comedy

posted on 25 Jul 2009

Basically Video-Game Movies can be split into two types: Serious and Not Serious. 'DOA: Dead or Alive' is an example of the latter in its best form. The movie follows the tournament plot-trail of Mortal Kombat, though the only connections this time include Jeremy Bolt and Paul W. S. Anderson in the producers' chairs and Robin Shou (Liu Kang) in a nice little cameo-role.This film, like Mortal Kombat, combines the right elements. Furious and well-choreographed fight-scenes with memorable characters and true B-movie comedy combined with impressive visual- and computer-effects. The film's rather odd editing style helps to establish its computerized look and prevents the audience from mistaking the film as serious drama. :) The plot undoubtedly does not deserve many cheers, but it would be harsh to undermine it. Some excellent themes exist, even if the format of the story does not provide much depth. Regardless, this does not severely hinder the viewing experience.Where the film undoubtedly does suffer is confining in one too many B-movie clichés near the end, but the delightfully action-packed ending-skit luckily leaves the audience with an up-beat feeling.

For what it is, pretty good but far from great

posted on 27 Jun 2009

First off, you don't see a movie based on a video game and expect "Shawshank Redemption"! This is a martial arts video game, adapted to a movie and catered toward teenage boys! A lot of reviewers are "thinking" too much considering what I just said. This is also a movie focused on fans of the DOA video game, but like most movies things are changed and that is hardly ever for the better. I think someone needs to go all out and change the way these video game movies are handled, try not to change the characters at all, or the plot but just do everything better and make sure the cast works well together and add some cool stuff. A well made movie like that would skyrocket at the box office and open up a big money well in Hollywood. That being said, it's actually pretty good, though the case doesn't work great together, some characters are completely blown off (which will anger fans of them), and the worse was Ryu Hayabusa (of Ninja Gaiden and DOA fame). Instead of being portrayed as one of the most beloved video game characters of all time, he is not shown much, and doesn't live up to how he should have been. Others, like Lei Fang were in themovie a whole minute or two.Devon Aoki is somehow strangely attractive (not on the par of Vance, Carter, or Priestly of course) but she is dull, and monotone the whole movie. She was pretty terrible, much better in Sin City.Holly Vance is simply gorgeous, and her character was pretty cool. Priestly looked great, her acting were very good considering the dismal plot, and her body looked amazing. She was perfect for her part and didn't disappoint like most of the others. Sarah Carter is graceful and gorgeous as well, and all three of them have very sexy toned bodies, but don't look like they are going to blow away in the wind. Carter has one of the nicest butts I have ever seen! The former wrestler (or maybe current?) Diesel as Bass was pretty amusing. Now the plot: Considering there is not a ton to work with considering the video game is based on a martial arts tournament, it's uneven, pacing is overkill or slow (no medium), and the actors/actresses are uneven, some are great and some just bad. Eric Roberts was decent, and he has always been underrated IMO.The women in this movie are amazing looking, and provide more than enough eye candy. They are also scantily clad in most of the movie, but it's more tasteful than it could have been. Remember: This is a video game known for scantily clad women and bouncing boobs!. There is also a nice nod to the "Dead or Alive: Beach Volleyball" and it was actually pretty well executed.Don't expect any movie awards, but a decent action/martial arts movie with lots of action and beautiful women. Also, DOA fans will like it or hate it depending on how you feel they handled the characters.

Worst movie I have ever seen with major studio backing

This movie is terrible beyond all belief. I think that I could get better acting out of cardboard cut-outs than the actors they picked. Devon Aoki, god bless her, just can't stand up in a large role like this. This is yet another example of a video game movie disaster. I ask all of you DoA fanboys. Please do not pay to see this film, it will perpetuate other terrible movies like this one.I could barely stand to watch the whole thing. The action is bland, the acting is sub-terrible, and the plot is ridiculously stupid.DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE

Hot chicks

DOA: Dead or Alive is about when some of the girls from the dead or alive series (Kasumi, Christie, etc) for a tournament. They all have their personal reasons and the more the progress on the tournament, the more they find out some mysterious plot behind the head of the tournament, Donovan. This is an alright movie. They make some of the characters like Hayabusa and Bayman seem like weaklings. All the girls except are extremely hot in this movie and they have some kind of alright fight scenes. One of the cool things about the movie is that almost all the fighters use different fighting styles. This is a movie you should see, but not in theaters.

O so good !!!

I really like this DOA film and i am very glad that holly valance plays my favourite DOA character Christie :), I think the film should of had lei fang at least beat her first match (and they should of got a better actor for her because shes dog ugly man), I especially like the way they have brought things from the game into the film like their costumes (arnye 4 example) they also brought in the volley-ball from another DOA game, Finally how come they pronounce Helena as ''hel-ina'' o well ... its a really good film tho so thats why i have given it a 10 :):) had to fill up the space l.o.l

If it wasn't for the women this film would be worth watching

posted on 19 Jun 2009

This film wasn't the best, on the previews it look like it was stacked full of action but wasn't. The only reason it got a 4 from me was because of the women. Also i don't often say this much but there wasn't enough violence in this film thats something it totally lacked in. Also it was very far-fetched a lot of totally outrageous and unrealistic thing going on. I think this film will struggle to do good in its release in the USA as it has came out here in the UK and i think it was poor. It was rated 15 but for what, OK there was a lot of scenes with women walking around with the bare minimum on but thats it really but as fare as violence goes i'll rate it PG.

hot girls kicking @ss? why not...

I haven't really "Followed" the game saga, but from my experience, this movie did a great homage to the games: Camera angles, ring-outs, Volley, action and as well as the game (sorry I'm a guy and I just have to say this) all the girls are smoking hot. Good actors and actress (I liked Aoki better in Sin City, but can't really complain) Well apart from that, I'm impressed by the fight scenes. Most of them are really well choreographed. Ayane was the only character that didn't really convince me.. Wasn't she 15 or such?? In the movie they used a much older actress (you can tell by the looks) and she wasn't exactly a good actress either. Character didn't work for me. And well, I'm not a movie critic but I enjoy movies with a good plot. This one doesn't have one, and no movie can be enjoyable enough without a good plot (no, not even a D.O.A movie) Is it a good movie? No. Not at all, but battle scenes are excellent and made it worth watching. I'd recommend this for any guy between 20 and 30 or something like that (I'm 27)for a "guilty pleasure" with your hormones. If you're a girl or a guy not between that age rage, it doesn't worth it. Judging the actress and the fight scenes ,5 stars.

Better Than Most Video game Adaptations

posted on 28 May 2009

I have to say that based on the previews I didn't think this film stood a chance of getting anything better than a 2/10. However knowing that Corey Yuen was directing the picture, I probably should have at least given the action the benefit of the doubt. As it turns out DOA is a pretty rubbish flick in terms of plot and acting but the action is solid. Yuen has a very Ronnie Yu style in terms of how he works the camera and while this film isn't going to win any awards anytime soon it's a solid popcorn action flick. For the folks who have seen Yuen's So Close which starred Shu Qi and Zhao Wei DOA follows the same formula. Good looking women taking part in some good looking action and whooping on each other's good looking behinds. The plot which is virtually nonexistent simply consists of fighters from around the world being invited to a martial arts tournament. Of course each fighter has his or her own motives and there are obviously some secret agendas going on behind the scenes. Honestly the plot is so paper thing it's not even worth discussing. Women might be put off by this film and immediately assume that it's nothing more than a teenage boy's fantasy but in fact DOA does a better job of appealing to women as well than McG's overly "girl power" Charlie's Angels. All in all there isn't much to say about this film except that the action and the sporadic humor are the only things which make it worth viewing. That might not sound like much but Yuen's experience with choreographing fights scenes really shows and as mentioned earlier he really knows how to work the camera. In fact he could probably convince you that Steven Segal has something left with his camera work alone. Yuen also knows how to shoot the leading ladies in terms of knowing how to make them look good, and I'm not just talking about the fight scenes. Yes the fighting consists of somewhat over the top wire work at times but it's 10 times better than the amateurish stuff McG tried to put together for Charlie's Angels. The film also makes no attempts to take itself too seriously like Lara Croft: Tomb Raider did at times. DOA compares to the first Mortal Kombat film in that it's kind of a faithful adaptation of the source material and definitely made for fans of the series in that the focus is on the action (although fans of martial arts flicks in general will find plenty to like with DOA). DOA wont change peoples opinions on film adaptations of video games anytime soon (that task is in the hands of Kojima and his Metal Gear Solid project) but it is a much better popcorn action flick than the previews lead you to believe. The way I see it, if people are willing to pay to watch something thrown together by hacks like Paul W.S. Anderson (and yes I know that he directed the original Mortal Kombat) and McG why not DOA? The fight choreography is much better than anything those two could ever conjure up and the leading ladies are about as good looking as can be. Besides, no one watches a film like DOA for anything aside from the eye candy anyway. Far from great but much better than I had anticipated. 6.5/10.

sooo, how's the bouncing?? ;-)

posted on 28 May 2009

I didn't see the movie but I have a question. I was reading the comments to understand one main thing: how's the breast bouncing guys?Come on let's be honest here, that's the main feature of the video game... I was wondering how that has been depicted in the movie. Yeah, I honestly can't understand the reason for this movie to exist if it wasn't for that, and it would be the main reason for me to go see this movie. Another consideration/concern I had was the following: I looked at the casting photos and those girls are not buxom AT ALL!! I mean they are very beautiful and everything but they don't depict very well the video game characters in the chest department: since this is a video game spin-off I think they should have chosen the actresses a little bit... "rounder". Sorry if it sounds rude... I'm a gal (who likes gals) and it's just my opinion! ;-)

A lot like the video games

posted on 28 May 2009

As a fan of the DOA video games, it was in my nature to go see this film. Even though I knew it was going to be shocking, I was surprised (a bit).Following the storyline from the games, DOA is about a fighting tournament held on a secret island were all is not what it seems. Princess Kusami (Devon Aoki) joins the tournament to find her brother. Tina (jammie Pressley) a distinguished womens wrestler joins to prove to the world she's not fake, like her "fighting style". Christie (holly valance)playing a sultry thief joins in order to steal a vault full of money, hidden on the island. Over time they meet other characters and they learn to work together in order to stop the main villain, Donovan (Eric Roberts).Like most fighting video game/movies the really isn't much of a story and a few of the actors are below par (espesially from Kane Kosugi), I was really impressed by Holly Valance and Sarah Carter. Most reviews can tell you that this is strictly for teenage boys, and I can tell you there right, through some racy shots of Holly valance and Jamie Presley. But what Impressed me the most with DOA is the fight sequences. Kane Kosugi has one of the best I've seen In a while on a flight of stairs and Sarah Carter and Holly Valance battle it out in the rain making it an almost glorified wet t-shirt Competition. If your looking for something innovating form this genre, keep walking, but if your looking for a great way to spend and hour and a half with some friends, then see DOA.

Holly's Launchpad

posted on 26 May 2009

Let me be honest, this movie wasn't that bad... But then again, I went in expecting the worst. To think I walked in 10 mins late to find that I'd missed the famed 'bra in the air'(Move over "bullet time", "bra time" is here...no points for guess which I prefer) stunt scene by Holly Valance, I was all set to leave. But given the amount of eye-candy in the movie for the male viewer littered throughout, I wasn't much disappointed. And around all that, the movie isn't half bad, as I never did get bored in the bargain. If you are someone who goes in for the plot, well, this has none. Whatever it proclaims is quite predictable and nothing that hasn't been rehashed a million times before. I'm not really sure how faithful it has been to its game franchise, but as I never did play the game, I wouldn't comment on it. The star cast is plenty in the visual department, though the acting department is left wanting. But where DOA succeeds is in clever targeting. The message seems clear. It targets the teens - the early/late 20s (primarily male) clientèle by getting enough hotties to heat up Mr.Freeze, and once they are in, keeps them entertained with a steady dose of eye-candy and non-stop action. The rational purpose of this movie though, seems to be to give Holly Valance that much needed grip she needed onto Hollywood. The other actresses are just so-so. Jaime Pressly, and doesn't do much. Devon Aoki seems to have made a successful transition from fashion modeling to films considering the roles she's been bagging, but no offense Devon, her expressions still remain way too wooden, and till that changes, she seems stuck in the action heroine typecast, where she continues to excel. The new girl Sarah Carter is just for the sizzles and nothing more. Not fair to judge her based on this. But Holly really steals the show. She's been banging on the portals of Hollywood for a while now, and with a memorable role this season on "Prison break", and now this, she should now have at least one foot firmly in by now. Her acting wasn't close to great, but boy does she have a screen presence. It probably comes from all her numerous stage appearances, but whenever she's on screen, she does have everybody's undivided attention, even if her bra isn't in mid-flight! Acting would only improve with experience, and if so, Holly may as well be the next big star of tomorrow... All in all, an entertaining watch when the mood is set for some mindless action. Along the same lines as the Mortal Kombat series(non existent storyline, unlimited action), but certainly more entertaining(to the unserious gamer surely).

Charlie's Angels meet Mortal Kombat

Take storyline form Mortal Kombat-1 movie and shoot it with Charlie's Angels-2 style - you got yourself Dead or Alive. And I'm not kidding at all! Story: greatest fighters of their styles are invited to the mysterious island to participate in a greatest tournament. Style: babes with boobs fight while break-beat music is playing. Music is synced with fight. See now? :)I've never played any of the games, but that movie seemed fair i.e. boobs, bikinis, fights and volleyball - they all were there.Bottom line: Everything is very cheesy, plot is almost non-existent and the fights are OK. But still pretty entertaining, mindless fun.

And this is supposed to be Dead or Alive?

posted on 14 May 2009

I had a few expectations as of how this movie would be when I went to watch it. And believe me, it lived up (or should i say down) to my expectations. The film was just about as crappy i thought it would be.Let's start off with commenting the story. From my point of view, it sucked. OK, I know Dead or Alive was never the games with the best story, but nevertheless. The team behind DOA: Dead or Alive put little or no effort in making the story close to anything in the DOA games. And what's with the female focus here? Like the three females that the movie focuses on and around are the main characters of the games. Well trust me, they aren't, there's a ton of other characters worth mentioning. With this kind of story, all this movie is worth to be called is a chick flick with fighting, and a very bad one at that. The characters were not similar to their video game original at all. If you take one peak at Leon, or Bayman, and say that they (beneath the badly made cosplay outfits) look anything like the original, you better go wash your eyes or get glasses. And it's not only those two, it goes for them all. I mean seriously, a Ryu Hayabusa without his mask? And even so, if we look away from the fact that he didn't have one, he still sucked as he looked nothing like the original. The acting was horrible. I must admit it had it's moments now and then. So it wasn't just crap. But close to. Very close. I didn't really feel that any of the actors put an effort into acting serious. Not once. It was more like they put an effort into making this a bad spoof off the games, giving other people a laugh about DOA.So DOA: Dead or Alive is, in short, the worst movie I have seen in God knows how many years. I can't believe how dreadful it was. Why did I watch it all then, you might ask? Well, a very bad movie can still be entertaining, the same way a good movie can be boring. If you don't believe me, watch it. 2/10.

Brain off entertainment

This film is about a group of fighters getting invited to a fighting contest. Along the way, they find out there is a plot behind it and they work together to fight the bad guys. There are quite a few problems with the movie. The plot is implausible. The DOA logo gets an on screen appearance too much that is very annoying. The love relationships seem so poorly built up that it exists just for the sake of existing. Not to mention the numerous soft porn scenes that make the film look cheap. Oh, and Devon Aokiwears the same facial expression on her face all the time, and her dialogs are spoken in such a plain and mundane way that is devoid of any emotion. However, there are good things about the film. The film is pure brain-off entertainment. The fight scenes are very well thought out and rehearsed. This alone makes the film fun to watch.
