First of all...I hated it.

First of all...I hated it. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon truly bombed in making this film. You may have heard that many Catholics are outraged at this film...no wonder...it is a rotten film. It's boring, it's stupid, and it has no redeeming qualities. Forget the whole religious offensiveness bit, this movie simply stinks. Bottom line....the title should have been "Ernest Gets Kicked Out of Heaven and Then Trys To Sneak Back In."

DOGMA is a facinating story that will make you think.

For those of you familiar with the other films in the "Jersey Trilogy", this film is exactly what you would expect from Smith when tackling a subject as involved as the Bible. In-depth storytelling, facinating characters (including Linda Fiorentino as the morally confused descendant of Christ), and a large amount of dialogue. Smith has never been afraid to tell a story through the words of his characters. DOGMA is no different. If you aren't afraid of a movie that will make you think about your own beliefs on the Almighty, I highly suggest picking up DOGMA.

This Movie Rocked!

Dogma was one of my favorite movies of all time! The cast was great, the lines were great, and it trashed religion in a funny way. Chris Rock, and Jay and Silent Bob were the best. Great movie I recommend it for all!

Excellent Film

Dogma is an excellent blend of comedy, and religious satire. From director/writer/star Kevin Smith, Dogma is a religious comedy for the non-religious. It stars Linda Fiorentino as Bethany, the last descendant of Christ, who is called upon to save the world from Bartleby and Loki, two fallen angels trying to return to heaven, played by pals Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. It is the supporting cast that makes this film so hilarious. The cast includes Selma Hayek, Kevin Smith, Jason Lee, Chris Rock, Alan Rickman and Alanis. It is the most original and provocative film done by Kevin Smith, since his low-budget pic Clerks. It is a film which embraces religion while poking fun at it in the classic Kevin Smith style. I highly recommend this film to everyone.

Great fun

I am a very religious person but I don`t see anything wrong with this movie. It is a great movie. Matt and Ben are wonderful actors and the plot is very funny. So enjoy the movie and stop thinking about the Angels/religious thing. Just see the movie for what it is: Great fun!

Overly Talky But Still Great Fun

Kevin Smith's "Dogma" is an insane blend of comedy, action, religion, discussion, toilet humor, etc. . . It's hard to peg this movie. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are both very good as the renegade angels. The supporting cast is very good also. The only thing wrong with this movie is simply the over-abundance of dialogue. Most of the time, Kevin Smith is right on target with hysterical dialogue that is both funny and insightful but sometimes it feels like his fingers went crazy on the word processor and he let a character blab on too long. Some of the serious dialogue will drive you batty at it's inane lengths. Conversations sometimes last up to ten minutes! Still, though. This movie is highly entertaining and probably Smith's best film to date. I'd rent it before purchasing it.

Dogma - The 4th in a series of movie masterpieces

Kevin Smith has continued his creative genius with hs 4th work Dogma. I always consider it a good sign when you have to wipe tears away from laughing before any acting has actually occurred. He keeps with the inter-movie jokes while poking fun at most of society whist providing justification that can't be rebutted.

This movie rocks!

Dogma Is Heaven-sent.

Dogma is a good if uneven film. It has Kevin Smith's signature style: Witty, quick, scatological dialogue rife with profanity and pop-culture references filmed without a scintilla of visual style -- but if you're a Kevin Smith fan then you don't watch his films for the latter.

This film has a stellar cast. Everyone here does a wonderful job, especially Ben Affleck and Matt Damon who have a wonderful on-screen chemistry and who are both adept at delivering Kevin Smith's dialogue. Unlike Salma Hayack who was more than likely reading the script for a foreign film.

Dogma sometimes feels just as preachy as the sort of thing the film derides, but then that is Smith's prerogative as an auteur and he never goes overboard with it. Besides, the mind-blowing metaphysical speculations alone more than make up for it.

Despite its many vacillations Dogma is a heartfelt endeavour teeming with laughs thanks to the funniest comedy duo of all time: Jay and Silent Bob. I love these guys!

What was this guy watching?

C'mon! Kevin Smith is the best new director on the scene! (Well '95 new) Conversations that last 10 minutes? For those of you without A.D.D. buy this movie. If you liked Clerks or MALLRATS you'll love this... especially if you're "not of the faith."

Good idea - Decent script - Poor execution

I have to credit Kevin Smith with two things: having a keen witand an insightful mind. The idea behind this movie was incredible(like his other films), and really made you think about the thingsthat were force-fed to you as a youngster. Also, the script is better than Smith's previous efforts, but... The directing, once again is just awful... END

Dogma

Kevin Smith is probably my favourite writer at the moment, although I do agree his directing does suffer under his previous success. Due to the larger budget, actor resources and script demands of his Latest film Dogma I believe it can be seen that he has struggled to juggle all the aspects successfully. Taken as a dialogue piece alone this is far superior to 99% of what is out there and measures up favourably to his past work but I think the main problem after reading one of the early script drafts is that so much has been cut to make the film more digestable for "Jo-Public" that it has become to cluttered with characters and just does not grant each character enough development on screen. Some characters I think should have even been dropped (namely Salma Hayek who pales in comparison to real actors next to her)Overall though it is an excellant film which is not the directors best work but is so full of very clever and insightful dialogue, that rings true that it proves as enlightening as to the riciculousness of organised religion as it proves entertaining. The advantage of the extras included on the DVD means it can only be Highly recommended.

Dogma is the best Kevin Smith movie yet.Jay and Silent Bob brought together with Chris Rock makes this movie a must have for anyone who loves raw comedy. It will keep you laughing right up to the very last line.

Loved It

This movie is fanatastic. At first I was hestitant to see it because I am a spiritual person and I did not want to see anything that made fun of God. But as I was watching this movie it became increasingly apparent that this movie did not make fun of God but made fun of people and there beliefs. For a comedy this movie was remarkably deep. It made you think about you beliefs and laugh about them. Silent Bob was excellent and he actually talked once. Jay was his usual profane self and funny as alway. Chris Rock was awesome and Salma Hayek really did steal the show. She was awesome tough, smart, and beautiful that's a hard thing to pull off. I can't wait to own this movie it something that you have to see more than once because you'll love it that much. Most of All I loved the movie because it focused on JERSEY.

Hey, I am a Kevin Smith fan, just like many others, but this film really lacked the acting that it needed to pull of the brilliant story and script. People have lauded Jay and Silent Bob for this film, but they kinda ruined it. In the other 3 Jersey movies, J+SB play support roles. In this go-round, they are given lead parts, but they can't really pull it off. SB way overacted (trying to make up for the lack of speech?) and when the token line finally came...it sank. Maybe he spoke enough in Chasing Amy to quench us all... Chris Rock also needs to understand that with a script as fine as he was given, not every line needs to be a punch line, and a modicum of action may be required to fill the part. Good story...not really well executed though. I buy it anyway.

If there is any "film" I would recommend this year Iwould have to definatley recommend 'DOGMA'. I have been a long timefan of Kevin Smiths' work and this is one of his finest. (Kudos to him and everyone accoiated with this fine piece of work.) 'DOGMA' is not a blasphest film, it is a fanasty and a film on questioning faith itself. DOGMA opens up aspects to religion and really makes a fanasty that revolves around faith. After the controversey of DOGMA Kevin Smith stated: 'I respect your ways; why can't you do the same for me?' I close on BUY THIS FILM! (or rent it) and see for yourself at what a excellent film this is. Snoogians.

Keeping it real

After a wait of about three years Kevin Smith has delivered another master piece. The film that was essentially conceived out of controversy is finally available and thankfully it isn't as bad as some might have you think. In Dogma Kevin has bought together a great cast whose chemistry shows on screen so well that you would think that they weren't acting. The actual script is also well written in the Kevin Smith style that shows us a twisted and somewhat pessimistic view or reality. The special effects (of which there are many) are not as good as they could of been but they don't detract from the film. We are also treated to an appearance by Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Keven Smith) who, as in previous movies, steal the show with their andtics. Teh soundtrack is also excellent and fits teh mood of each moment with precision. Overall the film is excellent, now if only it hadn't taken that long to be released.

In a word...brilliant!

First off I will tell you I'm NOT a catholic. This will only matter to the religious nuts who wish to know WHO to put on their list of damnation. I'm honored to be on that list with Kevin Smith. He is a brilliant writer AND director. He is also a religious man at heart and this film was always meant as an homage to the faith he grew up in. Those who say it attacks religion and the catholic church have never even read the script or viewed a single frame of the film. Upon watching DOGMA, one can clearly see that it is in fact a visionary "LOVE LETTER" of sorts from a man with a few concerns and questions about the tenants of "blind" faith and "unquestioned" beliefs. George Carlin's performance is NOT to be missed. Although many scenes were cut, or not filmed, from the original draft of the script which circulated well near a year before the film was released, this film is a must see for the fans of Kevin Smith. And to those who would "burn" Mr. Smith if they could, before you crucify someone at least KNOW why you would do so.

this really is a great movie

I really very much enjoyed this film. As a fan of the work of Kevin Smith I can say this really is one of his best(sure he's only done 4 and i doesn't beat clerks). Ben Affleck(who was in mallrats and chasing amy)and Matt Damon give what I feel are their best performances. and what tops it all of is Jay and Silent Bob(smith) who are regulars in all his films. I really don't see what is offensive. I doesn't make fun of any religon per say. What i feel it does do is open your mind to different aspects of religion and different was of thinking about it. No one will really touch religion it that matter before. If you want to attack it for that reason you really should see the movie and then rethink you taughts on it. I know quite a few who have seen it none where offended or saw anyting offensive in it. Every one has a right to think differently about everyting and religion is one of them. Smith just gave you a lot of things to think about.
