100% Pure Entertainment

posted on 28 Aug 2009

Wow! I wasn't expecting what I saw when I watched Drillbit Taylor. I went in expecting just another modern day crude humor movie and I went out, laughing and having experienced 100% of pure entertainment. Owen Wilson (one of my favourite actors) does it again as a homeless body guard protecting and evaluating three nerds as they begin their days in high school. There are excellent characters (wait until you check the nerds out), some hilarious scenes (comedic violence, anyone?), topped off with a feel-good ending and a movie you'd love to watch again. All teenagers should give this a watch; because you probably know the high school bully at your school so, perhaps you might learn some tips? Overall an instant classic for ages, young or old.

Much better than I expected

I went to watch this thinking that this would just be another one of those bad comedies, as we've unfortunately had to endure for the past decade or so. But no, it really wasn't that bad! It was certainly very funny, anyway :-D.I don't want to reveal any of the plot elements, so all I'll say is that it's a PG-13/12A high school movie. However, its not your typical high school, or "teen movie" if you will, certainly because there's very little sex/lust/whatever. Instead, there's a lot of violence (not really in a slapstick way, though), and I find that very entertaining and certainly different. In conclusion, I think it's a very funny and engaging movie. I give it 8 out of 10 stars - it certainly isn't the best comedy I've ever seen, but its most definitely not the worst. Sure, 8 out of 10 may seem pretty high, but I'm only rating it as a form of entertainment rather than a piece of art.

Not the best movie but still worth seeing

I don't agree with what some people on here are saying. I think the three kids are hilarious in the movie and Owen does a great job playing off of them. I thought the movie was going to be pretty cliché and predictable but some of the twists in it surprised me. It seems improbable that a bully who terrorizes kids in a high school would be able to get away with beating up other kids in such blatantly obvious places and have them be "above the law," (that line cracked me up) living in a huge, well furnished house while their parents are in another country. At the same time that is what makes this movie different than the stereotypical high school bullying stories; it has a little bit of an edge to it and I think that if you are able to suspend belief in some situations you will be able to really get a kick out of the movie. Plus, you get to see Owen Wilson's(at least a body double)butt. twice. :)

Drillbit Taylor Drills You With Fun

Drillbit Taylor is sheer fun it makes you explore the fun loving life of three not so adolescents who make us laugh all the way to the end.It is a very good film which shows how good comedy can be at the highest level.Owen Wilson is remarkable and stands out in the scenes with the kids.Story is fun which moves along the kids and the two bullies are as good as everyone else.Movie is recommended for people who like high school comedy and slapstick sense of humor. It really relates to fun and hysterical laughter.A MUST WATCH....

Really- It's not that bad!

Okay, okay, okay... It's not like this is the greatest comedy ever or anything. It's not even a great comedy. It is funny, though, and I think it's worth a view. I haven't watched any of the other Appatow comedies so I have nothing to really compare to here, but it seems that this is his film that he designed more for families.Owen Wilson is great and endearing as always, and the rest of the cast is all fine. The three leading kids are the funniest, though the skinny one is somewhat put off by his serious scenes. All in all, though, a film that will certainly make you laugh. If your looking for simple plot, easy jokes, and fun slapstick look no further. 6/10 stars...Jay Addison

Just another comedy.

I like Drillbit Taylor. Funny in spots, well direct, and has a interesting story. However, the movie dragged, and some parts were more sad than funny. I believe Owen Wilson's personality carried the movie. The material (script) Wilson had to work with is stale, and Wilson added life to a very forgettable film. Comedy is hard to create, and to maintain a comic synergy for over an hour is hard. The movie is watchable, and rent able. Would I buy it? No! 6 out of 10 I did not mind it. The movie is no Caddy Shack, but no Ishtar either. Good cheep Tuesday movie on a cold Canadian night. I think everyone knew a bully and how desperate one gets with them. The way the teachers, and parents do not care or maybe they are just dumb is a little to close to reality. Funny but not in a humorous way. We laugh at them not with them.

Drillbit Taylor Review

Drilbit Taylor (Owen Wilson) is about a homeless man who wants to raise enough money to move to Canada. Wade (Nate Hartley), Ryan (Troy Gentile), and their annoying tag-along friend Emit (David Dorfman) are in need of a bodyguard to protect them from two vicious bullies, Filkins (Alex Frost) and Ronnie (Josh Peck). The two post a request for a bodyguard online to which Drillbit answers. He tells them he was kicked out of the Army for unauthorized heroism. He teaches them all types of fake techniques to cope with the bullies which doesn't work most of the time. So he decides to go into the school as a substitute teacher under the name Dr. Illbit. He gives Filkins and Ronnie a hard time until they find out he's not really a teacher. Drillbit also develops a relationship with the English teacher Lisa (Leslie Mann). After an incident involving Drillbit's homeless buddies stealing everything from Wade's house, the boys throw him out and hate him. He then tells Lisa he's homeless and she's upset. But he decides to make things right again and before his homeless friend Don (Danny McBride) can sell Wade's possessions, Drillbit takes it back to Wade's house before his family get's home. Back at school Filkins calls Wade's crush Brooke (Valerie Tian) a ho, he challenges him to a fight at Filkins's house. At Filkins's house Filkins beats them up, but Drillbit comes in and saves the day. After Filkins chops off Drillbit's pinky with a samurai sword, Filkins gets sent back to Hong Kong where his parents live and Drillbit goes to jail for three weeks for getting in a fight. When he gets out, Lisa still loves him and the boys are still his friends. I really liked this movie because it has a lot of good messages that I can't say right now because I'm really tired after writing so much. So, just go see the movie if I haven't already spoiled it for you.

Funnier than I imagined

I recently went to see the sneak preview Tuesday, going in I thought it'll be so-so in the humor department. This isn't a smart make you think comedy, but it had heart in the right places and it was very funny none the less. It has a few plot holes, but nothing too obvious to the viewer. I really enjoyed watching the characters, Owen Wilson is really great at these types of comedies. In the end though I've got to say that the kids they casted really stole the show. They fit their roles perfectly. In the end all I can say is that this movie is redemption for geeky fresh meat everywhere.

Good, Not Brilliant

Right off the bat, I have to say that I am pretty easily pleased. There aren't a hell of a lot of movies that I absolutely loathe. Just movies I will not want to see again.Drillbit Taylor is essentially a younger Superbad with Owen Wilson. Unfortunately, the story is not as engaging, not as funny and just not as good. This movie will most likely be a stepping stone for several of the young cast. Alex Frost as Filkins, the bully, is quite frightening and plays the slightly psychotic role extremely well. Troy Gentile is being labeled as a young Jonah Hill, but I felt he was a lot more like Joe Pesci. Nate Hartley did well as the young second lead. There are a number of funny scenes like the bullying montage, the rap battle and Wade and Ryan's preparation. The problem that there is too much stuff in between which isn't funny.

What amazes me about everyone's reaction

Yes, Owen Wilson is always likable in these kinds of roles. Yes, it has more than a few funny moments. Yes, it's easy to like the heroes and hate the bad guys. Why does no one find it disturbing?? Because it makes a happy ending, typical Hollywood wrap up, to violent, disturbing, deeply troubling and criminal harassment and torture. Only people who don't care and don't ever think about why they like what they like and how the film-makers manipulate, would not object here. It is an irresponsible film and really glorifies the problem by making it a fun buddy caper. I hate to sound so uptight, and I don't think I really am, but some of the sadistic attacks on these children made me cringe and rage as I saw it... not because it went too far, but because to some degree this sort of thing happens everyday, and the system, the school, the parents the other students stand by just as they do in this film. However, here we have a fantasy about some crazy solution. It would be fun and cute if it weren't such a vile topic - one nobody seems to take seriously. If you have children, or know children or care about children in the public school system, this film should not be fun for you. Do not suspend your disbelief. Is rape a fun topic for a happy ending buddy comedy? Is murder? Is child beating? Domestic violence? No? Really?? No one would say yes to any of that? Then why is a topic that can lead to things like school shootings and suicide, not to mention the endless fear, deep emtional damage and daily desperation and unhappiness of many children's lives, so easily translated into a cutesy buddy film with a happy, feel-good ending? The makers of this film should bear some scrutiny for exploiting such an issue, for diminishing it and making light of it. As I started by saying, yes, there is fun involved, but those who are so immune to the ugliness portrayed here, the wrong, the real problem that goes as ignored in the real world as it does here, that this is enough, should do some thinking when they watch films.

An experiment with certain success.

Apatow are back again with their new project, "Drillbit Taylor". In this film, Apatow decide to take a different turn from their usual explicit material full of drugs, language and sex, focusing this time on a younger audience. Drillbit Taylor revolves around two students, Wade (Nate Hartley) and Ryan (Troy Gentile, The Pick of Destiny) on their first day of school, who end up rubbing the wrong people the wrong way, specifically one Filkins (Alex Frost, Elephant). He continues to make their highschool lives living hell. Desperate, the boys hire the help of bodyguard, who comes in the form as Drillbit Taylor, played by Owen Wilson. While this film does have charm and works as a nice piece of experimental work from the Apatow boys, something about this film just isn't right. The acting was occasionally awkward, especially that of Hartley's, who always looked like he was about to laugh in almost every scene. The script felt crooked and didn't seem to run smoothly with the characters. But what really disappointed was the amount of over-the-top sequences throughout - the scene where Filkins is chasing the boys in his car is just one example. I really wanted to believe in the story and what the boys were going through, but felt I couldn't really do so due to this. This film could have been so much better if it relied on the simplicity that made Superbad so good. It's only until about the last third of the film that things really start shaping up.Look, not everything about this film is bad. Owen really does carry the film, not to mention Frost's exceptional performance, showing us once again what talent he has to offer. He genuinely felt like a real, living bully and didn't rely on too many stereotypes. Plus, the laughs are genuinely there. Definitely not Apatow's finest work but I commend them and Rogen for making a change of pace and trying something new.Hamish Kearvell A.K.A Screaming Japan Productions - www.myspace.com/screamingjapanproductions

A hopeless, hapless, humorless, soulless MESS that some 14 year olds will like

posted on 13 Jul 2009

First and foremost...Wedding Crashers fans need not apply. 81% of Top Rotten Tomato critic's thumbs down got this one spot on.From synopsis to DVD jacket cover this film is touted as the story of 3 HS Freshman nerds who hire soldier of fortune Wilson to protect them from the school's bully. Untrue. Wilson is not a soldier of fortune. Even the interview scene (kids interviewing real soldier of fortune types) so often the highlight in other films (like The Full Monty) is utter nonsense here. The thought that any of these 'real' bad asses would interview with 14 year old nerds offering pocket change and no compelling argument plays as absurd as it sounds. At the constant core of this 'comedy' is Wilson's life choice to be a 40 year old homeless, highway panhandler who lives in a park and takes naked showers at the beach. He lies, cheats and is a thief who steals from the kids home as they give him a house tour. His best buddies are likewise bums and thieves. He failed a short stay in the army and is not and has never been any kind of soldier of fortune. Humor? Stuffing a kid into a locker, making them pea on one another and punching one of the kids till his face is a bloody mess. The the bully tries to run the kids down with his car...laughs galore, right? That Wilson can waltz into a high school, be taken for a sub and immediately start teaching.....now that is funny....being detached from any semblance of reality. For 95% of the film Wilson is punched out by the bully time and again, bloodied face and all. Why won't he fight back, his 'employers' ask...Because I've never been one with violence...he finally admits. Where some teen comedies are written for teen and adult audiences this film was written with an 'adults need not apply sign' in mind. And yes, some reviewers belly laughed at Wilson's face being bloodied, as he loots a kids home, as he lies cheats and steals and leaves the kids to be assaulted and bloodied. After Wilson admits on screen that for 95% of the film he has continued to be a total loser the final minutes of the film permits Wilson to exact the long, long, long awaited redemption punch out.In the end, some will laugh at young kids suffering and being beaten, at Wilson being a homeless, lying, cheating and stealing loser and others will fondly recall Wilson effortless comedic genius in WEDDING CRASHERS.

Not so entertaining

This film is about three boys, who got bullied in high school, recruiting a bodyguard to help them ward off the bullies.I was hoping "Drillbit Taylor" is as funny as the previous Owen Wilson films. After watching it, I am disappointed. In the first half, Owen Wilson looks tired, wooden and half hearted all the time. His eyes are constantly red as if he has been crying for hours. It seriously lacked energy and magic, which is unlike the usual on screen Owen Wilson. He looked as if he was depressed. Maybe he was.The script is not particularly engaging either, and the jokes are not so funny. Apart from some one liners, I did not find "Drillbit Taylor" funny or entertaining.

One of the feel good teen comedy movies of 2008

Drillbit Taylor was such an awesome movie. It was extremely funny. I pretty much laughed throughout the whole movie. The three kids in this movie made everyone laugh in the theatre. Then having Owen Wilson team up with the kids that just makes the movie all the better. The acting in this was pretty good especially out of the kids. At first going to see this I thought the acting would be just okay. Instead it was really good though. The messages in this were pretty good. The movie was trying to state a point to you that if you tell the truth no matter what it is, you will get farther in life. Owen Wilson in this movie just kept lying to everyone especially the kids. At first you dislike Owen Wilsons character. Then he gets to know the kids and they teach him a lot about life. This was a great teen comedy movie in my opinion. I liked the idea of having Owen Wilson play a homeless man at first trying to make money. The thing that was bad about him though is that he did mean things for the money. This was also a pretty cute movie. The reason it was a little cute was because one of the kids liked a girl in his high school. Most of the time that always helps in a movie. I thought that this movie was well worth your money to see it. Another good thing about this movie was the idea of having such a mean bully picking on the kids. I thought Owen Wilsons character made a great bodyguard for this movie. Overall Drillbit Taylor was very funny and a great movie to see for teenagers especially.

must watch if you like high school comedy

if you like humour this is the movie for you . all the cast have done a great job . its a pretty good high school comedy. It's a decent family comedy, this movie was above my expectations .this movie make u laugh loud some of the times. though there are some times where you feel its old high school humour but i still say its worth watching . owen Wilson has done a pretty good silent humour you would love to watch it .But after all "Drillbit Taylor" have some really funny parts and is very entertaining so I recommend that you spend 1 hour and a half eating popcorn and having some fun with Owen Wilson, of course only if you don't have anything better to watch.

a minor effort from Apatow and company, but still better than some other comedies

Could one expect more from Drillbit Taylor's script? Sure - it's written by Kristofer Brown and Seth Rogen, Beavis & Butt-head alumni and Apatow mega-star respectively (plus a guy named 'Edmond Dantes', which is really John Hughes oddly enough) - but for what it's worth, as a rental, it's not the worst that could happen. If it is lackluster it's because of the prototypical nerds-vs-bullies element, plus the nerd that wants the girl, and the 'hero' of the story of the title who goes through ups and downs with his "employers". Of course, it's also hard to dislike Owen Wilson, who's like one of those scruffy dogs that comes up and yaps and chases its tail and has a charm and fun time, when it's needed. Here Wilson is a bum AWOL soldier who by quick luck sees a job posting for a 'bodyguard'. The job is posted by a few freshman kids, two longtime friends and one an even bigger geeky dude than the others, who are looking for protection against a really horrible bully and his cohort (he's the kind of bully that will charge if you put the color red over his face, and of course no one else will stand up to him). It's fun times then seeing Drillbit- named, we later find out, for a pinkie accident in high school- teach these kids to buck up and fight the bullies. It becomes a little cluttered plot-wise with Wilson starting to then date the school English teacher (Leslie Mann), and it's sometimes only mildly amusing when it could be shooting the moon comedy wise. Then again, I'm not quite the right demographic for this kind of formulaic high school comedy; if you're a 11 or 12 year old kid, you'll like this movie a whole lot, and without sounding too sanctimonious it's a little more appropriate then some of the raunchiest stuff in Superbad (if, again, not as funny). Perhaps it's slightly 'safer' than some of the Apatow productions, even if it's still fairly violent and intermittently crude. A lot of, thankfully in a way, rests on its young actors playing the nerds, the whacked out bully, and Wilson who can go between straight-man and comic relief pretty well. In short, a good rental, though don't rush out for it.

A great film for all ages.

I recently bought an Unlimited pass for my local cinema so I have been viewing many films recently. I went into this film expecting it to be a 'childish' kind of film, one to the same extent as 'Superbad' etc, which I didn't like due to it being too 'stupidly bad'. However this film surprised me in a great way, much of it very funny with some great one-liners. The acting was great, especially the kids that stole the show, despite Owen Wilson pulling off an impressive performance, one of his best yet in my opinion. This film has been one of the funniest films I have seen in a while and I recommend it to anyone, no matter your age.

I actually liked it

I'm one of those "indie-films-or-bust" type of people (with my favorite movies ranging from Amelie to the Darjeeling Limited), so when I saw the preview for Drillbit Taylor, it was an immediate turn-off for me. I saw it as boob, nuts, and ass jokes (aka crude teenage humor) and I was not excited to see it. However, an opportunity arose to see the movie well before it came out and I took the chance to see it.To my great surprise, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie to its fullest. Sure Owen Wilson is funny, but the kids stole the show. The crude humor was left to a minimum and the funniest lines were the really subtle ones that almost everyone missed. This movie had heart and a good message (which you don't normally see in mainstream teenage movies *excluding Juno*). Although I know it's probably not gonna make huge headlines, I feel like this movie needs more recognition than it's gonna get. I want to see this movie go big, and I'm excited to see what people say about it. So take it from me, it's funny and it's not disappointing.

Drillbit Taylor was a good movie. It has some laughs and some action. It was a typical movie, you could tell what was going to happen most the time past the 30 minute mark but was still a good movie. It is one of those movies that you don't adore but is good once in a while and is a good movie for a family to watch. The bully in this movie is not like the typical bully you see these days.I would recommend it to families who enjoy a moderately good movie with a little violence.9/10

Have a little more faith in the kids

posted on 03 Jun 2009

It's not often that I feel a movie would be better minus it's lead actor, but this one fit's the bill. Both staring kids completely out shine Owen Wilson in every way. The opening dialog between the two of them was hilarious, if the movie had stuck with them the whole way through, a much funnier movie would have been made. Instead Drillbit Taylor is injected in and kills all real humor and brings with him a predictable plot, an unnecessary love story, and an unfunny best friend. The parents/teachers/principal in this film are not only oblivious to what s going on in the kids lives, but set a new standard for adult stupidity in a movie. The movie totally pushes it's PG-13 ratting to it's very max, which makes me wonder why not just make it R like all previous Apatow movies, it seems to have worked better for them. So to sum up, the kids were funny, Wilson was not, there's a whole lot of unnecessary side characters and storyline, bottom line the creators of this film needed to have more faith in there two child stars and less in their need for an adult superstar. Wow, that did not sound right. There I go, pushing the PG-13 ratting.
