Tim Burton is the man
posted on 15 Aug 2009Tim Burton has one of the most creative, quirky, original, fantastic, and brilliant minds in film today. He has a rare gift of bringing pictures to the screen that are not market driven and are motivated purely by his unique art and extraordinary ideas. Unlike a lot of other great film-makers Tim Burton has always been consistent with his brilliance and his unparalleled, imaginative genius. With films like "Edward Scissor Hands", "Big Fish", "A Nightmare Before Christmas", and "Corpes Bride", Tim Burton has always created a curious, and refreshing,movie-going experience. Tim Burton's films are nothing less than magical.
One word defines this movie: Bittersweet.
posted on 12 Aug 2009I could say a lot of things about this movie: how it is a fun twist to the classic horror film (it event includes an interesting rendition of the peasants storming the castle), a revealing portrait about teen angst, and a bittersweet tragedy that makes you wish that "happily ever after" could be an option for Edward. It is a harsh critique of suburbia and American culture in general, one that I identitfied with very much in junior high school when this movie came out.I pulled this movie out and watched it again after four years and was surprised at how much more I got out of it this time through. But I must admit that after all the analysis and subjective pandering, this movie really touches me on an emotional level.Johnny Depp is perfect as Edward. His mannerisms and portrayal of Edward's innocence are completely disarming. It is this innocence that makes the audience want the world to be innocent toward Edward in return. But of course it isn't and, although Edward's hands are weapons, he has little to defend himself with. This is one of the best films of the 1990s, a comic/tragic fairy tale.
Much like the title character, a bit odd around the edges, but inside, it has a good story and a great message
posted on 09 Aug 2009Edward Scissorhands is Tim Burton's masterpiece. He is a visual genius who can create unique images and weave a great story into all of it.The story follows Edward Scissorhands. He was created by an inventor who lives in a castle, but was never given hands because the inventor died before he could finish him. He was uncompleted, but had scissors as hands(hence the name "Edward Scissorhands"). One day, a local woman finds him and brings him home. She tries to teach Edward the normal ways of their suburban life, but he has a hard time fitting in. He discovers a talent for trimming hedges into shapes, and later he discovers a talent for grooming. Despite being useful for these types of things, he isn't looked at in a positive light by the local neighbors. Edward tries and tries, but finds it very hard to fit in with the everyone else. This is a great film. One can easily look at the cover and think it's a weird film, but you have to really look beyond the oddness and realize the great message and great story that is being told. The cast is great, with an exceptional performance by Johnny Depp. Anthony Michael Hall makes a different turn with his acting and image. In Weird Science and The Breakfast club, he plays the nerdy character. In this, he plays the tough guy character who is more of a nerd torturer. There are a lot of moving and tear jerking moments in this movie. There is also an underlying love story, and there's a great message about looking beyond someone's surface and looking deep inside to realize what they are really like. Many of the people who didn't like this movie probably didn't get the message, and are simply looking at the movie from the outside. Like Tim Burton's other films, this is a visual treat to look at. Every shot is like magic, the way everything looks is fantastic. Every moment in this film is great, and many of the moments are very moving. The film is dark, like Tim Burton's other films, but at the same time, it is a beautifully told story, and it even has some underlying humor. This is easily one of Tim Burton's best films. If you want to see more great films by Tim Burton, I recommend Beatle Juice, Batman, and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Wonderful fairy tale
posted on 16 Jul 2009When the film first opened 10 years ago, people thought it was a horror movie because it was made by Tim Burton and had a "monster" as the title character. True, it is modeled on FRANKENSTEIN, but it is really a wonderful fairy tale about being different and creative in a world that values conformity over everything else.Vincent Price is a delight as the "mad scientist" who doesn't want to rule the world but to make cookies -- and a man who is really a robot with a heart. Like the IRON GIANT, this film appears to be a child's tale on the surface, but it is really profound with insights into human nature.Depp is totally convincing in his odd Christ-figure role. His eyes and facial expressions show his real talent and range. He manages to be funny, sad, spirited, dejected, and inspiring while hidden under a body suit and thick make-up.Edward is Tim Burton's alter-ego. If you ever see a picture of Burton, notice the fly-away hair and long fingers. He is showing us the artist in his struggle with a crass, bland world of pastel cookie-cutter houses and drab lives.Danny Elfman's music here is his best. He has time to develop beautiful themes and variations. I think this is one of the most touching soundtracks ever written.Since the movie concludes at Christmas time and has a mystical, magical ending, it is an ideal film for Christmas since it manages that rare quality of being really moving without being mawkish. In the new DVD format, the images are sharp and the music is magnificent.
I fell for this movie like Edward fell for Kim
posted on 13 Jul 2009Wow! After always wanting to see this film (I'd seen the ending on TV and it looked really good) I've now seen it twice! I just love it! It's not my favourite film but I rate it very highly. The acting from Winona Ryder, Johnny Depp and Dianne Wiest is excellent and the story.....well, it's just brilliant! The first time I watched it all the way through I was a little surprised because -having only previously seen the ending- I thought it would be a really sad, powerful film and I was shocked to find comedy moments in it! But, after seeing it twice (the second time I bawled my eyes out- especially when Edward stares down at his broken hands and dead 'father' and that tear-jerking music is playing) I can safely say it is one of the most well-acted, well-directed, emotional films I've ever seen. It's definitely one of my favourites!
Depressing and beautiful
posted on 04 Jul 2009I loved this film. How could anyone NOT love it? I cried and cried and cried. I still cry just thinking about it, and I've only seen it once. I'm a big fan of Johnny Depp and Tim Burton, and I've seen a lot of their films.
Go see this movie. If you don't like it, you need a shoe thrown at your face.
Bizarre film touches all the right buttons...almost
posted on 04 Jul 2009This moody work is quintessential Tim Burton. Perhaps no other director of this time is able to push the deep emotional buttons that pile one on top of the other, scene to scene.Physically repulsive android type creature of Vincent Price ( a casting gem, by all accounts) alternately finds himself the object of suspicion, wonder, affection, revulsion and mass hysteria in pastel suburban setting.Danny Elman's score and Burton's typical dark somber set designs are a feast for the senses and so, have a box of Kleenex handy. The film is marred only by the unnecessarily brutal finish, but then is redeemed by that elegant snow dance scene coupled with Elfman's haunting music.
A Creative Masterpiece
posted on 22 Jun 2009Batman is still by far Tim Burton's greatest picture but this film is by far his most creative. In what many have called "the re-telling of Frankenstein" Burton creates a world like no other. There is a scene where Kim (Winona Ryder) is dancing to the "snow" to Danny Elfman's beautiful score and that has to be one of the most beautiful scenes ever captured on film. The film stars Johnny Depp in what is perhaps his greatest performance and he portrays Edward in such a superb way that it is impossible to imagine someone else playing that character. Now with Burton, Depp, and Danny Elfman, in what once again should have been an Oscar-Winning score, mix the right elements to achieve the status of this wonderful picture.
An amazing piece of work with a beautiful outcome
posted on 22 Jun 2009Tim Burton is definitely one of my favourite directors, his films never seem to fail in my mind, as he is such an amazing director. He always chooses the darker and more Gothic approach in film making. His film Edward Scissor Hands is incredible. With excellent acting from Johnny Depp, he looks so sweet and innocent, and yet he is mistaken by the Surburbia society to be evil. When a lady decided to take him in, and fix his scars, she doesn't quite realise what she's got herself into. The young man Edward is not any 'normal' person, he was created by an inventor who happens to be Vincent Price. Edward has scissors for hands and causes more damage than immediately thought. Also starring in the film is Winona Ryder, who is rather annoying as she seems to be loved by Edward, she is not the best actress in this film, but i think Johnny Depp is excellent and he makes up for her bad acting. Directed superbly with amazing music that will make your heart beat faster and slower at the same time.Highly recommended for film fans every where, this is an excellent film and should not be forgotten.
Tim Burton's Masterpiece
posted on 19 Jun 2009Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands is more than just your everyday movie. Once upon a time in a castle high on a hill lived an inventor whose greatest creation was named Edward. Although Edward had irresistible charm. he wasn't perfect. The inventor's sudden death left him unfinished with scissors for hands. Edward lived alone in the castle until one day a kind Avon lady took him home to live with her family. Edward Scissorhands is a beautiful film with great visuals, music and acting. Tim Burton is a genius for creating such a beautiful masterpiece. This movie may not be AFI's greatest movie of all time but still it is one that will make your heart break.
A Truly Magical Movie For All Ages, Burton's Finest
posted on 10 Jun 2009This is one of Tim Burton's most powerful movies. Though the title-character seems strange he represents the goodness in the world and what can happen when society just doesn't accept difference. The Gothic look of the castle, combined with the glorious colour of suburbia creates a strong contrast and shows things may not be as they seem. Edward comes from the dark and scary castle but is gentle, kind and loving, the place he wants to be accepted into is the colourful suburbia, which is backstabbing, vicious and evil. This story shows the betrayal of a person who desperately wants to help and to love but does not realise he is being used. The only people that seem to understand him are the wonderful Peg Boggs (played brilliantly by Dianne Wiest) and the beautiful Kim (played superbly by Winona Ryder). Tim Burton has created yet another beautiful fairy tale to captivate adults and children alike. Johnny Depp shows his great talent as an actor and Danny Elfman's music for the movie is some of the most beautiful you're ever likely to hear. A great movie for Christmas and all year round, and while it is a classic story it also deals with the prejudices of society, friendship, family and love and I advise anyone who hasn't seen it to see it, it is an experience well worth it and a movie you'll never forget.
Winona Ryder - even as a blonde - is still excellent.
posted on 07 Jun 2009Even donned in a horrendous blonde wig and starring as the head cheerleader in a Tim Burton movie, Winona Ryder is still utterly believable (as in all of her films). I love Winona Ryder, I love Tim Burton, I love Johny Depp. This movie is a visually and emotionally stunning portrayal of true love. Sure, it's a Tim Burton movie, so how seriously can it really be taken? But it's great! So sweet... well-acted by the two main characters. Worth the time.
Magnanimous!
posted on 04 Jun 2009When I saw this movie, just a couple of weeks ago, I had no idea what year it was from. And I was really chocked when I found out that this masterpiece is created in 1990. Tim Burton is well-known for his way of making movies. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands... Every film he is involved in, you can expect something absolutely extra ordinary. And Edward Scissorhands is of course not any exception. We'll follow Edwards way into the real, human life. With a constant continual flash back of his early life, and how this have made him to what and who he is today. Edwards character demonstrate the way to acceptation for a newcomer, and then most of his actions, turns out to be wrong. The story and the world the characters live in, describes a very stereotypical view of things and situations. I get the "Truman show"-feeling that they all are watched, and we are the spectators. Winona Ryder as Kim, symbolize the goodness and purity in the world, Johnny Depp as Edward, the unknown and exciting, and Anthony Michael Hall as Jim, the evil and illiberal. Dianne Wiest got also an interest role as Peg, the kind woman that brings Edward to her own house. She sees no vicious in Edward and accepts him for who he is.There's so much to say and discuss about this movie, and every time I mention it, I come up with more and more interesting things about it. If you haven't seen Edward Scissorhands yet, I thinks that there no question about it if you should see it or not, you have to.
Scissors, Avon, & Leather, Oh My!
posted on 26 May 2009In a movie that could only be created by the
morbid-but-sentimental mind of Tim Burton, Johnny Depp has one of his first major roles as a needy, gentle-spirited
invention-gone-wrong. The movie takes place in a strange Technicolor town of bright houses, square lawns, and a looming mad scientist's castle at the top of the hill. When Diane West, playing an exquisitely sensitive and maternal Avon lady, decides to visit the castle, she finds a boy named Edward living there all alone. Edward is not a normal person, just as you'd expect from Tim Burton: he's a leatherclad, melancholy freak of nature with foot-long scissors in place of fingers. Overcoming her initial fear, Diane West takes pity on the childlike Edward, and invites him into her home. The ensuing story is somewhat typical of all the "fish-out-of-water" stories ever told - Edward is at first accepted with open arms by the neighborhood, and takes part in
hedge-clipping and haircuts, as well as becoming something of a local celebrity. To make matters more complicated, Edward innocently falls in love with the Avon lady's daughter, a waifish little beauty played with the perfect blend of teenage passion and innocence by Winona Ryder. But a few misunderstandings and dangerous missteps lead the townspeople to reject Edward, leaving you worrying for Edward Scissorhands to the very end of the film. The movie is awash with cartoon-like settings, bizarre characters, and a wistful score by Danny Elfman. Johnny Depp excels as the gentle monster who can never be completely understood by the humans he encounters ... anyone who can make you like them in spite of having enormous blades for hands is a true sweetheart. This is a melancholy, bittersweet bit of Tim Burton cinema magic at is best. Not to be missed.
one of the best burtons, done in unusual charm
posted on 23 May 2009The Basic plot : a person with scissored hands is rescued by an Avon lady who takes him to the suburbs, where he wows the burbites at first but eventually faces problems. The praise:The fairy tale quality is done in minimalism ,combined with delightful cinematography,a contrast of pastels and black& whites in the well-designed sets, character depth, climactic ending, and a sense of emotion create a piece of art.Tim Burton(who directed it) is seen in depth, character and design, while Johnny Depp is perfect as Edward. It also has charm, but in a convincing way. An underrated film from an underrated director, it was neglected at both the Golden Globes and Oscars, even where it should've won Best picture in my book over "Dances with wolves ".Vincent Price's last role,as a bonus for horror fans. The flaws:They are quite small, and include exploration of plot and detail in.
An honest, true-to-life tale that will remain in the viewer's heart
posted on 23 May 2009Usually, fairy tales and fantasy stories are starry-eyed romances, with characters that truly don't seem real, and empty plots with little true feeling. But sometimes, a fairy tale comes along that displays deep characters, and an incredibly honest, true-to-life plot. This is such a fairy tale. All of us will see ourselves in Edward-we all want to fit in, we have our awkward and embarrassing moments, but we just want to be ourselves. Watch this film carefully, and you will find an intricate story woven together by sadness, lies, humor, and above all, love. That is truly what this film is about-that no matter how you look, you should never be denied the basic human right of friendship and love. This movie is a joy to watch-everyone will agree Tim Burton has worked wonders on the film that made him famous. And I hope that after you see this you'll all see that Johnny Depp isn't just a pretty boy-he is a very talented actor.A classic-10/10!
Completely timeless Possible spoilers.
posted on 11 May 2009WARNING: may contain spoilers.Released an astonishing fourteen years ago, Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands is the perfect fantasy tale: telling the story of Edward, a robotic creation left alone after his master died. When a kind local women, Peg Boggs (Diane Wiest), brings him home to their perfect village immediately everyone is intriged. Edward, unacustomed to this new was of life has his fare share of problems fitting in. Slowly as life goes on, Edward falls for Peg's daughter: Kim. But after several events occur, he realises he cannot belong within a normal community. This story is very heart-wrenching, and easily reduced me to tears. The film is perfect, but no use if you can't bear sad stories- that's just what this is. A depressing, unbearably sad film. Yet at the same time, its touching and addictive. The sort of film that will not be forgotten easily, however old its still a timeless fantasy story with irresitable characters.Johnny Depp gives a perfect portrayel of Edward, his emotion is spot on as his lines are barely there. Winona Ryder gives a beautiful performance as the suspicious and freaked out Kym who slowly falls in love with Edward. The film is depressing yet oh-so-appealing and impossible to turn off. The ending will reduce you to tears and the music is hopelessly romantic and sad.One of the few films that is etched in my mind. 9.5/10
A beautifully crafted film
posted on 05 May 2009Edward Scissorhands is a film I have been meaning to watch since being influenced by the fairytale storytelling of 'Big Fish'. Tim Burton has yet ceased to impress me (despite the fact that I have not seen many of his films) and I have always recognised Johnny Depp as being an actor who can make any character his own, so I was pleased when the viewing opportunity arose.I have to say that I was not disappointed. The unique aspects of contrast between the bright town and its residents and the dark castle like place where Edward is created is wonderful. The script is well crafted, sometimes funny and very touching. Burton creates a misunderstood character, much like the famous Frankenstein monster. I believe it near impossible not to feel for Edward when he states lines such as "I'm not finished." Johnny Depp is superb and you cannot help responding to his naive, childlike smile.Although when you read the full story aspects of it may seem slightly ridicules, the overall picture is a wonderful film that has now become a favourite of mine.9.5/10

One Of The Best Films of The 90s - Sad and Beautiful
posted on 27 Aug 2009This is a wonderful modern day fairy tale about Edward ( Johnny Depp plays him great ) a creation with scissors for hands who has been isolated up on a dark mansion after his creator ( played by Vincent Price ) dies. When an Avon Lady ( played by Dianne Wiest ) stops by the mansion she finds Edward and brings him home hoping to give him a new life. He then falls in love with the Avon Lady's daughter Kim ( played wonderfully by Winona Ryder, and I heard Drew Barrymore was turned down for this role because she was just making her comeback. I think Drew would of been just as good. ) But Edward gets setup in a burglary and the town who once adored him turns on him. Some people think the ends violent but I liked it even though it was sad.
