Polly does it again as "Debutante Linda"
posted on 16 May 2009I am a huge fan Of Jessica Polly (credited Beitchman). When I heard that she was in this movie I just had to see it. Normally I find Disney movies passe and trite, but if you're in the mood for it, this movie is exactly what the doctor ordered. It's an enjoyable romp for romp's sake. But let's talk more about Jessica, shall we? (sigh) And how 'bout that Julie Andews. She is it! Seriously though, the movie is great for kids of all ages with a little something for everyone to enjoy. Music, laughter, even ballroom dancing! I watched this movie with my nieces and nephews and they laughed so hard. We all had a spectacular time. I don't know if the movie is available on DVD, but if it is, by all means rent it. You won't be disappointed.
Think Pink A Better Way of Life!
posted on 29 Apr 2009I grew up reading Kay Thompson's "Eloise" series about a precocious six year old who lives with Nanny, Weenie and Skipper-Dee in New York City's Plaza Hotel. I was delighted when the book had been made into a movie which was originally shown on the ABC Family Channel. The movie is the book come to life! Sophie is brillant as Eloise, Julie Andrews is a perfect Nanny and Hilary Knight makes a cameo apperance as a sidewalk artist who paints Eloise and her friend Leon. Eloise will have you laughing till your sides hurt. We have watched this movie many times over the past two years and never tire of it. This is a must have for the true Eloise fan!
10 out of 10 -- Spunky, Fun, Light-hearted and Warm...a Family film pure and simple...
posted on 03 Mar 2009As my children and I were watching Eloise at the Plaza we were tickled too many times to count them all and laughed endlessly. Ten year old star Sofia Vassilieva is several things: 1) Beautiful 2) Charming 3) Precocious 4)Unbelievably intelligent 5) Funny 6) Sweet as sugar and 7) A highly skilled child actress. There are not too many films today, including some Disney videos, which are truly a family-safe composition...as too many times we conscionable parents are set-up by liberal Hollywood with a cute theme, but only to suffer foul four-letter words and filthy sexual double-entendres vomited forth from the mouths too-many of today's movie children. The South Central Los Angeles corruption of America's morals has been flooding movies for a decade now. But I am so pleased to announce that Eloise at the Plaza (and also Eloise at Christmastime) does not indulge the revised lessening of children ethics in any way whatsoever. In fact Eloise is a lovable treasure. This movie is about a sprightly, bubbly munchkin of a 6 year old girl with a teasing way, but a wholesome way about her. When all things are taken into account there is notably no places in this story where a parent needs to hold their hands over the eyes or ears of their younger children. There are no points that need to be sped up to the next DVD chapter. Like a Blessing from parent Heaven, the good heart of Eloise is exactly as a conscionable parent would have expected it...fun, frivolous, endearing, and full of unexpected kid 'spunk'.10 out of 10.

Disappointing story of little rich girl
who lives at the Plaza Hotel. Eloise is
the I Do As I Please girl who never listens
to her nanny, her teacher or to hotel rules.
Eloise should go to a military school. Julie
Andrews as the nanny seems to be half asleep
in this production.
very cute
posted on 03 Feb 2009I watched this movie on TV last night and thought it was adorable. Julie Andrews (my all-time fav) was great in her well-done switch from her usual elegant, classy English lady to the cockney Nanny. Eloise got on my nerves a little bit because she was so overly-dramatic, but that's how she's supposed to be, and I'm sure I came across the same way when I was 6. All in all, I'd say it was just an adorable movie, and I can't wait to see the next one this holiday season.
Eloise at the Plaza is a wonderful family movie
posted on 19 Jun 2008This movie is very fun. When my children were younger we came across it at the public library. We had never, and still haven't, read any of the Eloise books, so it was just a random choice for a family video. I enjoyed it so much that even though my children are now grown it has become a Christmas tradition, along with "Eloise at Christmastime" to watch. After the frustrations of messed up library DVDs I finally ordered my own copies. My favorite parts of the movie are just seeing the ways in which Eloise interacts with the people in her world, the Plaza Hotel. Some like her and some don't; there doesn't seem to be any in between. But as she sees things from her six-year old perspective, she actually has some wisdom in her innocence that changes the lives of those she touches. Yes, she is quite a character and sometimes things don't go exactly as they should, but her heart is in the right place. This is a wonderful family movie that you don't have to sit on the edge of your seat about wondering if there will be something said or done that you don't want yourself or your children to see.
Why did they bother?
posted on 07 Jun 2008The books are witty and charming. This, in stark contrast, is formulaic schlock. Americans -- and much of the world's consumers -- prefer their entertainment predigested so it doesn't require chewing, so they consume the same nutritionless movieland cliches endlessly.
In the land of limitless equality, everything is reduced to equal tastelessness. If you want impart the capacity for discernment to your child, you could start by avoiding this twaddle. The Eloise books are special, while this movie is mere product.
Update: I've since discovered that Anchor Bay has two Eloise animated DVDs, "Me, Eloise," and "Little Miss Christmas," which are far more tolerable than this Disney garbage. They are at least a bit more faithful to the spirit of the books.
This was an first-rate movie with excellent performances.
posted on 01 May 2008This movie was full of excitement, humor and sparkle. An excellent performance by young Sophia drove the movie with never a dull moment. She may be the most talented young actress I have seen. Julie Andrews was great, as always.
What were they thinking!
posted on 20 Jan 2008As a lover of the original Eloise books I can honestly say that making a movie out of it was a huge mistake. The charm of the Eloise books is her unique imagination but also the fact that she spends he time alone and bored in a big hotel. The addition of the extra characters completely ruined the entire book and it seems foolish that the amazing Eloise books are associated with this movie.
Cute and Funny in the Right Places; Sofia is GREAT!
posted on 27 Apr 2007I finished watching this really cute comedy about a six-year-old girl who lives at a 5 star plaza and causes havoc. It's very warm-hearted, and people who love the Eloise books will love this movie. I can't wait until next Sunday, Eloise at Christmastime is on. Sofia Vassilieva is charmingly funny, REALLY cute and is a great lil' actress, the part of Eloise fits her like a glove. I can't wait to see what she has in store for us. Sofia's spunky and brilliant, she's a great actress for her age, maybe the future of Hollywood. Eloise is just a little girl, trying to get people to notice her in bad and good ways. She wants to go to the Debutante Ball but has no one to take her.
When she overhears someone saying that a prince is coming to stay at the plaza, she immidiately wants the prince to take her to the ball. When she stumbles across a 9-year-old boy, who IS the prince but Eloise doesn't know it until the end, she asks him to help her look for him. Eloise also takes him around New York and they have all kinds of fun. Somewhat unrealistic, I know, but adorable none the less. This should definetly get a higher ranking then 4.9. It should at least get a 6.7. If you haven't seen it, please do, you won't be dissapointed.
remember when you were six?
posted on 01 Mar 2007One night I was absentmindedly channel surfing and came upon Eloise at Christmastime on ABC. I'd heard of the books growing up, but never read one myself for whatever reason. After watching just two minutes of this movie, I was sucked in for the next two hours. I'm eighteen, done highschool and moving on in life but OH how Eloise fills you up with that childhood inspiration. Where the world is your playground, everything is possible, there is never a dark cloud. The next day I purchased Eloise at the Plaza and rushed home to watch it and, not surprisingly, fell in love. The actress cast as Eloise is irresistably cute and with all honesty, I could watch this movie and this movie alone every night for the rest of my life. Buy it for your children, or watch it on a rainy day.
Supercute Movie
posted on 15 Feb 2007I was surprised at how much I liked this movie, which I rented with my 6-year-old daughter and then wanted to buy. It is very entertaining for adults and children, has absolutely no inappropriate content, but does have a moral/lesson which can only be appreciated by children 5 or older.
Julie Andrews and Jeffrey Tambor are great in this movie. Enjoy!
Eh, not that good...
posted on 09 Feb 2007Wow, I am surprised with the number of 5 star reviews here. After reading these reviews, I was curious to see this movie, so I rented it last night. I am sorry to say, I found it just another cheey, predictable, over-acted family film. Not that it's worse than other live-action family films, just that this genre doesn't seem to produce many good films.
Right now my daugher, age 3, is too young for feature-length films, but since there are not many good family ones out there, I am already trying to do research for movies we will watch on family movie night one day soon. So far I am not having luck with live-action family films, and though there are some great animated ones (Aladdin, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast), they normally have a level of violence live action ones do not, and I am looking for pure fun, but a good movie too (though I'm starting to think animation is the way to go). This movie was okay, along the lines of Beethoven, Parent Trap (remake), but it's not on the level a movie like Mary Poppins is.
I'll have no problem renting (not buying) this for my daughter one day, and I'm sure she'll like it, but I'm still looking for that 'great for all ages' film that many reviewers here said this was and wonder why movies that are okay, not very good, like this get so many 5 stars.
A movie I will enjoy watching with my daughter time & again!
posted on 05 Feb 2007This is a great movie for children and adults alike. Eloise has a little something to offer for children (free-spiritedness and creativity) and adults (a message about listening and opening your heart while speaking your mind) - and a fun way of delivering it! I have always adored Kay Thompson's Eloise character - with her messy hair and silly antics and wild energy! Seeing her come to life through Sofia Vassilieva was a pure joy! Julie Andrews is fantastic as "Nanny"! To be honest, I can't think of a single flaw in this fun little film. It is my 5-year-old daughter's new favorite - and I'm happy to watch it with her over and over again. Eloise is not a perfectly well-behaved princess - but what little girl really IS? I don't think a discussion of role models is even appropriate in the realm of entertainment - if you're looking for role models, read to your children and BE their role model. Eloise is fun and full of life and spirit - and if we all absorb even a fraction of her energy and creativity we'll be better off for it. I hope my daughter is as free-spirited and expressive at age 6 as the fun-loving Eloise - that would prove to me that I am allowing her to be a child in every way possible! What could be better than that?
forty years of fun
posted on 03 Feb 2007I have loved Eloise since I saw a TV special long ago in the days of live TV. Eloise is not a 'brat'; she is a free spirit who loves adventure and is not afraid to try things. She is an experimenter. Eloise is what children would like to be, if only they dared. Sofia brings the absolute essence of Eloise to the screen (I can't imagine anyone doing the role better), and her 'supporting' cast of stars are excellent. I agree that they should make all the Eloise movies while Sofia is still little. I would buy them all for myself (and, of course, my grandchildren, especially the granddaughters). My granddaughters will certainly get this one in their Christmas stockings.
Why Bother?
posted on 07 Dec 2006Eloise movies are so the opposite of "heart-warming".
what kind of sick people want to make movies about little brats that learn life lessons, or stay at the plaza hotel? BORING! Just don't watch it, that was my mistake. at least i didn't buy it, i watched it on tv. But don't even do that. it's a waste of two hours in your life that you'll never get back. these movies are so bad that they don't even deserve 1 star! i feel sorry for you if you think otherwise.

Eloise at the Plaza
posted on 26 Jul 2009This is a very cute move. Eloise is a bundle of energy. She is curious and mischievous. The only thing I suggest if watching with young children is that you watch it with them. Eloise does a few mischievous things I would want to instruct your children NOT to do. Other than that, you will enjoy it.
