"Elsewhere" is exactly where I wanted to be while watching this.

Elsewhere (Nathan Hope, 2009)

There will come a time, and hopefully it will be soon, when someone will make an intelligent mystery about Internet dating, with realistic, well-drawn characters, an original twist on what is already a very old subgenre, and an ending that you can't see coming from a mile away. Elsewhere is not that film. Not by a country mile.

Elsewhere takes place in small-town Indiana, the kind of quaint little place you stop at on your way through the state for pie, coffee, and postcards, but never really think much about. Stranded there are best friends Sara (Twilight's Anna Kendrick) and Jillian (Lost's Tania Raymonde, best known these days for being Jeff Goldblum's girlfriend; he's 56 and she's 21). Sara is the bookish, thoughtful type who just bears life; Jillian will do anything to get out, including putting nearly-naked pictures of herself on a social networking site (obviously modeled on Myspace) in order to meet someone who will take her away. All looks great when she starts talking about a secret admirer she calls "Mr. X", until she disappears from a party one night. Sara, with the aid of her computer-geek friend Jasper (Senior Skip Day's Chuck Carter), must figure out what happened to her, and whether she's even still alive. (This may not be the case; it seems young ladies have a habit of going missing in this town.)

First off, the script doesn't even bother throwing in a red herring; you'll know who the bad guy is fifteen minutes into this movie (and at that point you don't even know there is a bad guy unless you've read the jacket copy). Revealing character names for the win! (In fact, the name gives away a very important plot point...) But by the time you hit that, it doesn't surprise you; Hope's script takes a list of mystery clichés, combines it with a list of Internet clichés, and mixes the whole thing into a thin, unpalatable, smelly stew obviously meant as a cautionary tale about Internet dating. It ends up being an unintentionally hysterical parody of movies like Reefer Madness, but updated for the instant-gratification Internet generation. You'll see every plot twist coming, not that it's hard through such paper-thin characters. I think the only reason this movie has gotten any publicity whatsoever is the presence of one of the stars of Twilight. Trust me; that's not nearly enough to save it from the obscurity it so richly deserves. Good for a laugh, but not much else. *

A Tense, Suspenseful Missing-Person Drama

posted on 31 Aug 2009

"Elsewhere" focuses on long-time best friends Sarah (Anna Kendrick) and Jillian (Tania Raymonde). Though both grew up in the same small Indiana town, the two girls are total opposites. Sarah is a topnotch student and athlete, while Jillian is an underachieving troublemaker. Both girls want desperately to break free from boring small-town life, but Sarah is shocked to discover that Jillian has started meeting anonymous men through the Internet in order to find someone who will show her some excitement. Soon after this revelation, Jillian disappears, leaving behind only her journal and a video message sent from her cell phone. Determined to find her friend, Sarah enlists the aid of Jasper (Jon Gries), resident computer genius, who secretly has a crush on her. Their search, however, leads them to discover why no one wants Jillian found.

"Elsewhere" has elements of assorted thrillers in which innocents get involved in circumstances way above their heads. As the film progresses, suspense heightens and there are a few good scare moments. Ms. Kendrick does a competent job. You believe her as bright, level-headed, and thoughtful, and she does convey that all-important thriller movie ingredient -- escalating fear. Bonus features include deleted scenes, photo gallery, director and producer audio commentary, and a making-of featurette.

Great cast, Great movie

This movie is an awesome and suspenseful teen thriller. I really got into the story and though the cast was great. Anna Kendrick, Jon Gries, SO GOOD! But Olivia York, new to the film scene, is such a star on the rise! And her eyes are so blue! So gorgeous! Watch this movie!

It's entertaining, but also cliche-ridden

Don't get me wrong, I actually liked this movie though it brought nothing new to the table. The weakness of this movie lies in its resorting to the usual cliches inherent in the genre, but it's strength lies in the credible acting and the well-paced plot.

The story centers on Sarah [Anna Kendrick who played a bit role in Twilight as Bella's classmate], an average teen who works part-time in a diner. Her best friend Jillian [Tania Raymonde from Lost] is a sort of wild teen vamp who comes from a white trash background. Jillian is addicted to meeting men online with a provocative moniker "Dirtygurrl". When Jillian goes missing, Sarah tries to convince the local sleazy cop that something is wrong, all to no avail. No one seems to care about a girl that has been courting trouble for a long time, and it is left to Sarah, and her computer geek friend Jasper to figure out what really happened. Along the way, they have to deal with some teen bullies, a rather mysterious father-daughter pair, and a woman who has been tagged the town loony [her daughter disappeared years ago but she still puts up posters of the missing girl all around town], and of course exploring the world of online dating.

Compared to some rather lackluster teen offerings lately such as "Sarah Landon and the Paranormal Hour" and "The Haunting of Molly Hartley", this is actually a pretty decent thriller with credible acting by the leads. The one thing I didn't care for were the cliches peppered throughout the movie [such as some scenes that reminded me of earlier teen classics like "Scream" etc], and some incongruencies [finding the weeks' long missing teen's cellphone still charged???], but other than that, I would rate this movie an entertaining flick for it's genre. It had some genuine moments of suspense that had me cringing in parts. There is no nudity or gore here.

The DVD comes with extras such as movie trailer [I think this was a direct-to-DVD release], 22 mins of deleted scenes, a making-of feature, a photo gallery, and a director's commentary.

THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME

I am so glad this finally coming out on blu-ray. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Mr. Palomino!

Wholly unremarkable. Good title, worthless plot. For kiddies who are a tat too old for R.L. Stines "Goosebumps"? Like ... 6 months too old? 5? Maybe 3 months?

posted on 08 Aug 2009

I'd warn you against spoilers but then, this film spoilers itself in about five minutes into. Okay, so this is what is called a fully predictable film. We see the two HUGE archetypical stereotypes in filmland, The Good Girl and The Bad Girl (Tania Raymonde is really sliding), which they cared so little about they haven't even bothered to change their character names, much: The Girlscout and DaBitch. Just in case we didn't get it. In that aspect this film is just one notch, a real tiny, tiny, tiny, notch up from R.L. Stines "Goosebumps", but that show was GOOD in it's genre). Soooo, Bad Girl is a slutty-type ish girl and does slutty things like plaster herself all over the net in skimpy underwear (ok it's not skimpier than yer regular beach wear, but hey, you get the picture. She has some facebook type of page where she has like 800 'friends' .... per day. All male of course. She has this super boilerplate Mom, who is White Trash personified, lives in a trailer, makes her money by selling stuff over the phone. Good Girl is also raised by a single mom, but this one works a good job and is conveniently outta town for the weekend, so the pleasantries can ensue. Whateverrrr. Anyways, there's the Big Dance and GoodGirl wants to hook up with Jock Type of ann A-hole, but of course him being the JockType he has to accuse her of being a prick tease, and she is rescued by NerdGeek, who's also handy with computers and has a job in the firkking library!! And he's on his way to Stanford. So NerdGuy rescues GoodGirl from Gropy Jock, they go outside and they see BadGirl fighting with DumbExBoyfriend who is of course Aggressive. Then of course we know that Something Very Awful has happened to BadGirl. Sure enough, GoodGirl receives the obligatory a) grainy video indicating BadGirl is in Serious Trouble. Obviously, we would go to the police, but since BadGirl is Poor White Trash and has peeeed off the AmarteurTeenMolestor Cop, nothing is done about it, and nobody believes GoodGirl. Then WEEKS go by, as NerdGuy & GoodGirl do their Hard Nancy DrewBoy teen detective thing, All of a sudden, there enters StrangeReligiousMan, whose daughter, FreakyOutcastGirl is a co-worker of GoodGirl & BadGirl. He's also the main suspect, and the viewer is never brought in doubt about that. There's no intrige, no multiple suspects, nothing. This is the BigBadKiller, and there's very little suspense after that. The film tries to imitate When a Stranger Calls and Scream .... BADLY!!! You keep waiting for a plot twist but then the credits roll and you know Its All Over. The remarkable other thing is that they take a whopping 1h46 to tell this!!

For a few thousand $$$, they could have bought a decent script.

It seems like I spend half my time watching poorly-produced and horribly-acted movies with good stories and ideas, and the other half watching well-produced movies with zero imagination and stock story lines. "Elsewhere" falls into the latter category. The actresses (and actors) are cute and do a decent job. (Keep your eye on the "weird' girl.) The production values are quite good, with interesting, but not impressive, cinematography. The whole movie is definitely not low-budget in appearance or finish. But the story and script are just awful...retreads of thrillers done hundreds of times before. Trust me, you'll pick out the bad guy within the first few minutes of the movie. No hints are required. There is very little tension in the movie, except for the few action sequences. Contrary to what you might expect from the tag lines, there isn't any "string" of mysterious disappearances. One girl disappears and, five years later, so does another one. The cell phone texting angle has been done many times before and much better, so no tension there. The typical (and stereotyped) red herrings abound. Finally, towards the end of the movie, you get a scene which ought to be subtitled "Scriptwriters Got Tired Here" or "Director Couldn't Figure Out How to Film This the Right Way." Two teens try to sneak up on a farmhouse where a (potential) bad guy is sleeping by creeping through a cornfield. Since they want to be stealthy, they (of course) bring along fluorescent tube lanterns. No, nobody would notice THOSE being carried through a completely dark cornfield at night, would they? And who would ever notice the bright light coming form the completely unlit barn when the kids finally get there? Unfortunately, this is typical of the writing in this film.Well-made, but still pretty worthless and unexciting.

not worth the effort

Small Indiana town has a problem, it teen girls are going missing, though no one really is paying attention. When Sarah's best friend goes missing after meeting one of her on-line dates she's dropped into the towns underbelly. Nominal horror movie is really little more than a psycho on the loose tale with some mystery and fancy trappings thrown in. Not really original, much of the teen cast looks to be 5 to 10 years too old for their roles, Sarah's girlfriend seemingly about 15 to 20 years too old.Unremarkable in most aspects this seems to be a throw back to a quieter gentler time where movies were inoffensive. I'm not a fan and I doubt any one else will be too since the film, while well done in numerous technical aspects (the film looks good), too many other bits, including the plot, don't hang together. I would leave the film in its titled place and not take it home with you.

Not great, but entertaining and way better than I expected

I started watching Elsewhere with a bit of mistrust, because I have already tolerated too many juvenile thrillers lacking of any suspense or ingenuity, reliant that the hypocrite independent "touch" will be enough for distracting us from the same predictable clichés we also see on commercial cinema.Fortunately,Elsewhere did not fall on that, and it resulted to be much better than I expected. It has some important fails, but it kept me entertained thanks to its competent screenplay, solid performances and precise direction. The story from this movie sounds as a modern and juvenile version of Blue Velvet.Needless to say Elsewhere does not reach that heights (it does not even aspire to) but it kept me interested because the story is well structured. However,it has various forced elements,at the same time there are a few occasions on which it believes it is more intelligent than what it really is.Another fail is that this film has a few scenes which could have easily been deleted because they do not add too much to the story.Nathan Hope's direction is solid because it is sober and the movie has a good rhythm and tone. The performances are competent.Anna Kendrick is more famous for her appearance on the popular film Twilight, where she did not have too much opportunity to stand out with her character. However, she brings a natural performance and a good presence on Elsewhere.Tania Raymond does not appear too much, but her performance is solid and her brief chemistry with Kendrick is very good.In summary,Elsewhere is far from being a great movie and it is not very memorable, but it kept me interested and entertained. So,I think this film deserves a recommendation.

Pretty Good!!! c-r-e-e-p-y

I loved the way this movie flowed and it held my interest all the way through! Very intense. It was surprisingly good and extremely creepy. The direction went in quite a few different ways with sub-plots careening about, a suspicious acting cop, jilted boyfriends, an alcoholic mother driven mad by loss, Internet-perverts, a creepy lonely female teen, and an unsolved string of teen abductions, as the description of the film states. It also made it difficult to guess if there was a murder or not, and if so, who did it??? Something was terribly wrong though and Sarah insisted on finding out! I guess that's what kept me wide awake. I was so tired before the film started, I doubted I could keep my eyes open all the way through. It's ability to keep us intensely guessing on a variety of things till the very end had us so pumped up we started yelling at the screen *blush*. It's so embarrassing when a film brings all the emotions out of us, lol. Tania Raymonde was very convincing in her role as the high spirited, wild Jillian. Anna Kendrick, from the vampire movie Twilight, plays small town girl, Sarah, best friend to Jillian. She's the only one Jillian has and only person who cares that Jillian hadn't been seen for a few days, eventually leading to weeks. Most of us never really pay attention to other people's tragedies or issues until it affects us directly on a personal level. Sarah's search for Jillian brings her closer to a distraught mother who had been putting missing posters up for her daughter, missing for 5 yrs. The tiny community had lost sympathy for the mother after the first 3yrs. her daughter went missing. Everyone simply considered the girl either dead or a runaway who was never returning...But, the mother's refusal to give up on finding the truth behind of her daughter's disappearance catches Sarah's fullest attention once her best friend comes up missing, than secrets about Jillian and the town begin to unfold!

Not really good, it could be a regular class B horror movie

This may see as a kind of expensive for a B series movie. It seems that there is a rule in all movies with a small town as the main scenario, and it is that at least one of the characters usually feels limited in the little town. This is the case of Jillian, a waitress in a local coffee shop who also is father-orphan and has a hard relationship with his mother. Jill and Sarah, the main character, are best friends and opposite sites of a coin. When Jillian begins to see men attracted to her by her sexy profile in an Internet site, Sarah realizes the great danger for her friend. Finally the expected happens and Jill disappears after one date with a guy met through his internet page. Since this moment the movie is centered in the Sarah's search for her girlfriend. The movie, as you have read is not original at all, and the only nice thing seen on it is the good (but very short) acting of Tania Raymonde as Jillian. Maybe the only interesting things came from the few mix of suspects that are presented in the film, including an ex-boyfriend of Jillian, a library rat friend and the father of a colleague at the coffee shop, plus all the strange men included in his internet profile.

Far more entertaining than one expects

So many direct-to-DVD films, especially horror-thriller ones are terrible that when something like Elsewhere comes along, some semblance of hope is restored. Writer-director Nathan Hope has constructed a mystery that while fairly easy to figure out rather quickly, still holds your interest throughout just to see how we get to where we think the story is going.A lot of credit has to go to the cast. As the intrepid, intelligent, and likable lead, Anna Kendrick, now most known because of her role in the Twilight films, does a great job of making us believe that she cares deeply about finding her missing friend. She portrays a sense of screen presence usually not seen from actors of her age. Based on her work here, she, instead of Kristen Stewart, should have been given the role of Bella in the aforementioned vampire saga. It'll be interesting to see where Kendrick's career goes because she definitely has potential. As the missing friend, Tania Raymonde has charisma, managing to make what easily could have been a despicably obnoxious character oddly likable, important because we actually care about discovering her fate. She and Kendrick share a nice rapport as well, almost instantly believable as best friends in spite of their varying personalities.Strong writing and a dynamic cast make Elsewhere definitely a place worth visiting.
