A good job with an impossible project

posted on 12 Aug 2009

For anyone who's rooted for Phil Joanou, they finally can get some insight into his life. I just assume this movie is a true story (which is a dangerous thing to do), and going on that assumption, the movie his alter-ego is filming is probably "State of Grace" (which explains why Robin Wright did a nude scene). Either way, he's taken on a monumental task, of telling his own story in a way that's both entertaining and honest (and without turning it into an ego trip). The last film I can think of that tried this was "JoJo Dancer: Your Life is Calling", and that was a disaster. Loaded with good karma, very reminiscent of another new release, Julia Sweeney's "movie", "God Said, Ha!" Hopefully a film that will break Joanou's bad luck in Hollywood.

Come on, A smoking, talking cat?

OK, so I think some people have every right to dislike this movie- it's silly, it's predictable, and it doesn't really have what I would call a hook. But I really enjoyed. Maybe because it just doesn't mirror what I expect from this genre of movie- or maybe because Stephen Dorff is more interesting every time I see another movie with him in it.. Remember "The Power Of One"? I gave this movie an 8 because I wasn't expecting to like the movie at all when I rented it, but it surprised me by not being what I expected at all (while still fulfilling every predictable aspect of a romantic comedy in the 90's)... Rent it only if you also rent a movie you know you will like.

For U2 fans ONLY

I admit it...I only gave Entropy a try because I am a disgusting U2 fan. And Bono wasn't really all that bad in his first acting role...playing himself. The story is stale. Much of the comedy is predictable. The dialogue is very weak. However! This film has AMAZING style. The colors, lighting, and cinematography are gorgeous. So, I suggest, in order to get the utmost enjoyment out of the film is to mute it and play a cd (perhaps a cd of the Irish rock band variety).

Why I loved Entropy, and why you might not have.

I have read all 36 reviews posted on this movie. I liked it that much, that i had to see what each person that took time out of their day had to say about it. To my delight, most of the comments were positive, some of them were bad (likely by people who enjoyed "The English Patient" or "Shine" -very good movies by the way), and few were accurate. This film was very much artistic. The camera work was phenomenal. The acting done by Stephen Dorff was down right excellence. The smoking cat scene was a bit silly "IF" you thought it was meant to be a realistic happening. Obviously he was imagining that but if you want to think otherwise, be my guest. The story was very good, and I don't think it could have been brought to the screen any better than it was. I enjoyed the movie very much and gave it a 10 only to bring up the 6.1 rating that I thought should have been higher. I would have otherwise given it a 9. Someone made a very clever comment about the movie being a real life incident in Joanou's life. Think about it. He directed U2 documentaries, and then went on to do movies. It was very realistic as it shows the real world of filmmaking. Producers very strict demands, problems with the cast. There were many things going on in this film and I thought that it was pulled together quite nicely. It gives you everything Hollywood wants, except the happy ending, which goes back to that thing called REALITY. Jake(Dorff) is a mess. You know this from the beginning because he's drinking and he's got a girl in bed that he married just the night before. He takes you through the occurrences that got him where he is. He takes a step into an unfamiliar world of directing with movies instead of his main talent, rock videos. He meets a girl, falls in love, screws the relationship up, quits his job, meets another girl and recklessly marries her, he gets a humiliating "wake up call" by his friend Bono as the other girl comes back for him, she leaves again, he gets divorced after being married for 24 hours to a woman he knew for 12, he tries to get back with the woman he originally fell in love with... need i go on? Realistically, these kind of things would make you go to the lengths that Jake actually does. He is a guy with a very wild mind, if he wasn't, he wouldn't be a great director. That is very important to realize. Normal minds in most cases cannot mastermind a movie. Anyways, i just thought that everything about this movie was great. I will not try and interpret every detail and TELL you what i think. I believe in something Stanley Kubrick once said. "I would not think of quarelling with your interperetations, nor offer any other, as i have always found it the best policy to let the film speak for itself"-Stanley Kubrick If you havent' seen the movie, you should and pull from it what you can. P.S. It's really funny. I thought i was the only person who right off the bat thought, 'Geez, this is kinda like Christian Slater in Kuffs!' Anyways, people copy each others style all the time. It was a good idea originally, and it was used again. No big deal, right?

Definitely worthwhile

First off, mad props to Stephen Dorff. Terribly underrated actor. I remember when "Blade" came out, and I thought he might have been mis-casted (?). He played the villain part with that certain flare (including a bevy of comedic moments) that even James Bond villains would envy.It is amateurish and haughty to say that this movie sucked. I could only imagine how most other people with this script would have elicited only a fraction of the moments established in this film. Get off the high horse. Sure, it isn't the most unique of creations, but the number of laudable moments make this film worthy. The cat scene: very funny. U2: very nice. The "not so happy" ending that is consistent with the thrust of the movie. I liked the beginning of the movie, and how Phil Joanou lets you know off the bat how difficult it is to begin a movie, done with a little wink wink. It melds the whole movie-making thing with this love story nicely. But I go back to the fact that Stephen Dorff carried this movie. He lets you empathize with his character. And of course, the stella in New York was beautiful. Finally, I could definitely relate to the theme of the movie that was layed out fairly smoothly, as I often say to myself, "how the hell did I get to this point in my life."

Well i think it's great

This is a marvellous film. It's creative and almost refreshing, even with its not so happy ending. I've been reading other comments and some people seem a bit bothered by the film's perspective and presentation. Jake is not a character that you can fall in love with. But you can empathize. He's self-centered, egotistical, creative...i found the narration scenes wonderful, what better way to narrate a film about a film maker, than to have the character physically narrating, instead of just a voice over. I know a few film makers/students and they are alot like Jake, i felt that was portrayed quite accurately. I liked the relationship between Jake and Stella...i liked the feeling of being swept away, but being afraid at the same time. The scene with the cat was great because it showed you right there that Jake is not all there in the head, which made me laugh even more when i thought back to the comment in the beginning about models being insane, and the hint that Stella might be insane herself. I think you can relate to Jake's character if you've ever loved someone and messed up and let them go, or if you're a stella, someone who was hurt by selfish acts such as Jake's (like when he got upset because she was busy working and couldn't talk to him, when he had done the same to her). Anyway it's a great film, and the characters fit perfectly together, even Bono is wonderful and not at all out of place. Highly reccommended. I gave it a 9.

A VERY GOOD MOVIE. HIGHLY ORIGINAL FILMMAKING.

I really liked this movie, the filmmaking is award winning (or atleast should be). Stephen Dorf is excellant, his best performance. The story is very good, i loved it. This is real life, these kinds of things happen to people all over, and Entropy deals with hard times, love and heartbreak in a very mature and good way. This is one of those movies that makes you laugh and cry, and that to me is one of the signs of a very good movie. It is to bad that this movie was released on video and not theatricly. I hope more people see this film. **** To all those people who think this movie is sucks or is a dissapoinment... you are weird.

Unfocused at times, but entertaining.

If you're looking for a film that exists entirely in the reality of the daily world as most people know it, than perhaps you won't appreciate this film. But if you're looking for a film whose main character is as neurotic as you imagine yourself to be, and who follows those bad instincts you always wish you would, that this will be a fun movie for you. Stephen Dorff is wonderful in this movie, although at times he sounds like he's trying to be Christian Slater, there are certain echoes of Woody Allen in an "Annie Hall" kind of way. Phillip Joanou makes some very inventive decisions, often breaking reality, and allowing Dorff's character Jake, to tell the story solely from his own perspective. Is it the most original movie in the world? No, but it has U2, in fact Bono plays a prominent role at times, and it takes place in New York, LA, Las Vegas, and Paris, so you know it has to be hip.

Eccentric, experimental and great!

Fine almost-psychedelic-oriented comedy about romance, struggles in art work and just loosing your mind (and finding it back). The meaning of the word tells it all. Dorff offers a great performance. U2's performances in the movie are in the right spots and at the right time. Very experimental yet great results. Entropy is a must for people who like the first stages of Tarantino, the visual experimentation of Olver Stone and the hilarity of Woody Allen (strange but rather great mix!).I find it mind blowing that the plot begins with the narrator in an awful shape explaining the story and then gets to meet his own character and the movie goes on! The ending leaves you with a melancholic feeling because all us who are still attached to this world have experienced the "Entropy" after an intense experience what ever it was. See you in the journey to forever!

Brilliant Look at Problematic Relationships in the 90s

posted on 10 Mar 2007

"Entropy" is a brilliant, beautiful film that successfully examines the complications that arise between pretentious film-makers and the models they love. The movie is filled with such pin-pointed, ironic observations about nothing we care about that one wonders how many layers of wit exist in the mind of writer-director Phil Janou. Having the main character, played with marvelous shallowness by Stephen Dorff, address the audience in cooler-than-us fashion is so original and appealing that it recalls the innovation of a Woody Allen comedy. A lot of the credit goes to Dorff. While watching his performance, some will invariably compare it to that of Brando in "A Streetcar Named Desire" or "Last Tango in Paris". That would be presumptuous, since Brando has never attempted a role with so many emotional nuances. Worrying about whether or not a beautiful blonde wants to make sweet love to you is a much more earth-shattering concern than your mental breakdown in the midst of the jungles of Vietnam (as Brando did in "Apocalypse Now").That this is the brainchild of the man who gave us the fantastic concert film "Rattle and Hum" comes as no surprise, since both movies are wise enough to employ the services of rock star Bono. As the guru of our famed hero, Bono displays flourishes of wit that has never been seen before since the invention of the moving picture. Some may find him smug and self-indulgent, and maybe not funny in any intentional way, but then they just don't "get" it. Who needs a musician of genuine wit such as Randy Newman when you can have Bono, who's cool? Move over, Tony Roberts: the off-beat romantic comedy has found its new token sidekick.***** out of *****

FROM BAD TO WORSE

posted on 29 Jan 2007

Awful, pseudo-hip misfire about modern relationships and the difficulties of film-making. Fans of U2 may get a kick from seeing Bono play himself, but surely even the super-cool pop star must have been left snoring after sitting through this dud. Director Joanou made a cracker at the start of the 90s, with STATE OF GRACE, and it seemed the decade was his for the taking. Since then it's been one disappointment after another, and with this turkey he seems to have hit bottom. Let's hope so - if this is the worst it gets, the only way is up, and maybe one day he'll again make a film which isn't a trial to sit through. This premiered on satellite in the UK, and it's not hard to see why!

THIS IS A GOOD MOVIE

posted on 15 Jan 2007

Phil Joanou directly hits on the personal frustrations, instabilities, and day to day reality of a modern day filmmaker. Probably based on personal experiences, Joanou deftly weaves a love story without cliches into a good love story about finding oneself before loving another. The female lead, Judith Godreche, is a beautiful and talented actress who hopefully we will see much more of in the future. U2 makes an appearance which is a nice treat, too. Congrats to Joanou for making a wonderful personal film about the collision of life and art!

A Gem

I liked this movie. I ran across this movie at a video store a while back... having heard nothing about, I bought it anyway.. I was pleasantly surprised. This isn't my favorite movie but it's a good one. You just feel so sorry for this guy.. I would recommend this to anyone that enjoyed High Fidelity..

I kinda liked it.

I thought it wasn't a bad romantic comedy. It *was* hip, too, I don't know why the last guy slammed it so hard. The fast-forward driving sequences were cool and the talking/smoking cat had me rolling on the floor laughing. And the story was original and moving. An entertaining 2 hours, good for a date night in, and a lot better than the teenage romance drivel that abounds.

Probably not for everyone

But those who can connect with the director at some level will really like this film. It is not surprising to see such difference in the comments left behind about this film. I guess it is one of those that you either love or hate. I for one, loved it. It has "some what" unique camera work that goes well with the story and it makes interesting use of jump cuts in its editing. Most of the actors are very comfortable in their roles, especially Stephen Dorff. If you are familiar with the circumstances behind the making of this film, you will appreciate it even more. Some comments criticized the "smoking cat scene". People, it was only his imagination! And if you had understood the film you would know why that scene is there. This film is better then good but not great and it may come of as being a little pertinacious. Finally, the tagline summarizes it really well, 'The hardest thing to do in life is direct your own'.

A good flick

A very, very good flick, as a matter of fact. I really enjoy the director's style and the soundtrack was great. The story was well done and it was a perfect movie for a lazy Sunday afternoon. My wife and I talked about it after and to me, that's the sign of a good movie: something that makes you think and want to discuss.

Great film on what could of been/relationships

I have just viewed this film twice in the same day and I think it is incredible. It is required viewing for the married thinking man (or single for that matter). See it with your wife as I did. Phil Jounau is a freakin' genius. It is too bad that he is not 'up there' with the Spielbergs, etc of this screwed up world. Anyway, this film has had a profound impact on me. It really makes you thinks. I really could relate to the central character (Stephen Dorff). The ensemble cast is really fun to watch. This film has Bono in it! I am from Brooklyn, NY originally and I enjoyed watching the scenes filmed around Brooklyn-Manhattan. Streets that I myself have walked. I once saw Mila Jovonich in a record store near the streets were Dorff walks in the beginning of the film. We had eye contact and yes she is beautiful! Anyway, rent this film if any of the previous things that I have mentioned makes any sense to you.

rock and roll, and talking cats make for a good piece of cheese.

posted on 14 Mar 2005

The director of U2's Rattle and Hum video, makes a great effort at a semi-autobiographical story. I'm not sure how much is from Phil Jouano's real life, but the impression is that Jake Walsh (dorff) is Juoanu. I liked this film so much, I added it to my personal collection, and watch it with friends often. Though it wasn't a big hit, it gets my vote as a short time in the life of a movie director in a rock and roll lifestyle spiraling down kind of thing. Good soundtrack too. But the talking cat is what made the movie for me. Any movie with a talking and smoking cat rules!!

PHENOMENAL

posted on 02 Mar 2005

What a great film... I honestly think this film, like many others about making movies, is misunderstood, and more importantly
unappreciated by the non-film biz audience. This one in particular because it really is more about what it's like to be a young, up and coming director, than about making a movie.I can personally relate to a lot of this film, which is probably why I love it so much.In all honesty, though I really like the somewhat exaggerated tone and style of the piece, it is probably the most accurate and honest representation of what young, first-time directors actually go through on a daily basis. From what I know of Phil Joanou, being a big fan of his work, this was a very personal and autobiographical project for him.I personally like to see films that are personal to the filmmaker because they have more of a sense of reality and passion to them. Actually going through events in your life, and then being able to make films about them is truly the greatest gift that can be given to the filmmaker...Bravo Phil, you have made a really great film. It's funny, intelligent, artistic, insightful, and just plain well done. Keep 'em coming.

Fine piece of work
