Ididn't want it to end !!!!
posted on 30 Aug 2009Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind was a marvelous, deep, dark, emotion driven picture that left t me almost speechless... Iwatched it in the afternoon and invited a friend over to watch it in the evening... I have never watched a movie more than once in a months time let alone in the same day... The way Joel(Carry) tries to get out of the memories mapped to be erased lightens the mood of the movie and you start to have hope... The end when they are listening to the tapes shows the reality of the two love thirsty lovers... it is amazing how hard it is to make a movie like this without loop holes... like if the mind is erased wouldn't you think your mother would be like"you need to get her... you were happier with her" and bring her back into his memory??? but he doesn't even bother with the extreme details and allows the viewers imagination run wild...He didn't tell the story as if he read it from a text book... he told the story as if he lived it which allows the listener to run wild with their imagination... I loved the Story...Charlie Kaufman & Michel Gondry did an amazing job together on this one... Must See!!! A- *Top Shelf W.B.
Wasted talent-wasted time
posted on 29 Aug 2009The premise and promise of the plot was intriguing. What a disappointment! I watched in growing boredom as the repetitious images, present and past, rolled past in slow motion. A few attempts at humour were feeble and silly. What about dialogue? Can no screen writer write good dialogue anymore? Are subtle stares and maudlin looks supposed to supplant carefully crafted words and is shrill, combatitive and nonsensical communication the norm in film today? I only wish when I attend a lousy film that wastes acting talent that I could get a refund when I leave the theater and the overpriced popcorn behind. This movie, wasting Jim Carey's talent, will not linger in my mind for longer than a fleeting moment of my time, wasted as well.
Like A Dream You Want To Figure Out
posted on 28 Aug 2009I haven't read any of the other reviews here before writing this. I saw this movie just last night, March 20th. Wow. I've seen Being John Malkovich and Adaptation (numerous times). I already knew that the writer, Charlie Kaufman, is a nutty guy. Man o' man, he really takes you on a trip this time. This movie is for ANYONE who's loved and lost, and wishes they could forget, and move on...or go back and pick-up where the relationship ended...as if either can happen. In real life, it's not easy, or impossible. In this movie, those issues are addressed, sometimes with dead seriousness, in other ways whimsically. The story floats in and out of serious situations and knuckle-headed silliness. I liked that a lot because moments in our life can be both of these things, and memories and dreams of these moments are mostly what we're left with when the moments themselves have irreversibly come and gone. I myself have felt so many of the emotions and even had so many of the experiences of this movie's lead character: splashing (yes, splashing) in the snow with the most beautiful person you've ever met...feeling like you can die now because everything you wanted to happen has now come true...daring to fall madly for someone, thinking they felt the same way, only to realize they didn't care, or couldn't care...they're living their own version of the nightmare. That sensation that you once knew someone, and now you can't find them, as though perhaps you just imagined the whole thing. C'est la Vie!
Give Carrey an Oscar please!
posted on 28 Aug 2009This film blew me away because I simply wasnt expecting it to be what it was. Though I had a feeling it would be something special, I didnt realise I would be so involved and, by the end, so totally moved! It appears that everything Kauffman touches turns to gold!First and foremost, a wonderful and unusual, eccentric story, that when told to a friend sounds ridiculous, but when watched on the big screen is perfectly feasible. The script was great, you totally believed the dialogue that the characters shared and each character had his/her own individual voice. The imagery was alternately beautiful and horrifying. Featureless faces and memories being raced against before their erasure was a masterstroke! Joel's memories of Clementine and his placing her in different parts of his memory was very clever, and very well done, relying on the visual medium (which made it easier for me to understand hehe).Something that occurred to me after leaving the cinema was that there was evidence of couples within the film that would go on to have the Lacuna treatment. Joel's friends, the couple (one of which was Mel in Frasier I believe?), looked as if they would soon be candidates for the treatment, and the young man who was clearly more into Kirsten Dunst than she was into him also looked as though he'd be a candidate. This I found subtle and clever. The acting was simply flawless. I realised after watching the film that it was probably the first genuinely good film I'd seen Kate Winslet in (who will ever forget Titanic?), and my god she was redeemed for that film! Not only was her accent perfect, she managed to be a character that you liked, but also wanted to shake! And you could tell that the relationship would have worked had they kept their eyes open and not allowed themselves to hate eachother, because the line between love and hate is a very fine one! It is a rare thing to have a believable love between two fictional characters. The star of the show though was Carrey. I find him irritating and embarrassing in his comedic roles (Bruce Almighty I found horrendous) but it appears that he cant do wrong when he stars in carefully chosen dramas. The Truman Show, Man On the Moon and Eternal Sunshine... are all superb films, and he never fails to impress me in his dramatic roles.....I would love to see him in more. And SURELY this year he has to be at least nominated for an Oscar! Who would have thought it, that the 'rubber faced genius' (debatable!) would not only be a good straight actor, but also an Oscar worthy candidate.....that would shake up Hollywood a little I should think!
Brilliantly Layered Dark Love Story
posted on 28 Aug 2009Not at all what I expected, both Jim Carey and Kate Winslett are amazing in this twisted story that investigates the interplay between the mind, emotion and medical science. Carey slinks about, the embodiment of unhappiness and confusion, barely alive except when with Winslett. She, on the other hand, bubbles with energy and curiosity. Both seem made for their roles. Dunst, too, is excellent as the officiously sexy receptionist and Elijah Woods,in a role that couldn't be further from the innocent hero,Frodo Baggins, allows us a glimpse into the mind of one who perceives himself as desperately inadequate - his superficial attempts to create a relationship through mimicry contrasting with the attempt to superficially destroy one that is real. The obvious similarities between this film and "Being John Malkovitch" have undoubtedly been pointed out, but frankly, I prefer this one despite its solemness. This is a study in both ethics and metaphor by which one can't help but be disturbed. I loved it!
Amazing Script
posted on 27 Aug 2009Eternal sunshine should be voted as the best movie of 2004. For those of you who are jaded by the typical blockbuster film with expensive special effects and cliche one-liners, this is the movie for you. It's funny, creative, and philosophical. You leave the movie thinking about life and the purpose of love.
It's defintely a romantic film, but not overwhelmingly so. I am not usually a fan of cheesy romance films, but this one isn't like your Drew Barrymore/Ben Affleck type cheesy films. Its a movie that makes you wonder about every relationship you've ever had. And Jim Carry does an amazing job of portraying his character. He's come a long way since the Mask..I think he could be the Tom Hanks of this generation.
However, if you are the type of person who enjoys movies like The Wedding PLanner or Gigli, and every Will Smith end-of-the-world catastrophe summer movie, then this is not the movie for you.
excellent all around
posted on 26 Aug 2009I went into this movie hoping that it would live up to the good reviews that I had heard and read just prior to seeing it, and I must say that it lived up to those expectations and that Jim Carrey far surpassed them. I think that Carrey has finally broken completely free of his "Ace Ventura" type-casted role in my mind. Even his dramatic work in "Bruce Almighty" had some residual feelings of that goofy kind of character (albeit it was called for in the role and overall I liked the movie). But now he simply shines out with a beautiful piece of work that I left the theater still in awe of. I rarely exit a movie being truly struck, without further contemplation, by an actor's work, but this was definitely one of those rare moments. The movie was also surprisingly easy to follow after perhaps the first 15-20 minutes and the love story was truly beautiful. Overall I was extremely pleased with the results.
"Eternally" One of the best films ever made...
posted on 25 Aug 2009'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' has earned the top slot on my shelf of DVD's after seeing it almost a year in March and completely falling in love with it. It is the most original and heart-warming romantic comedies I have ever seen in my life. The cast play out this saga absolutly beautiful portraying all the hearkbreak, humor and laughs that make this movie so unique. Kate Winslet as Clementine completely stole my heart and is what made this movie so great. I thinkeveryone woman as a little Clementine in them and can totally relate. Jim Carrey as Joel was absolutly amazing. I have never seen him act this way in anything and he just completely blew me away. The rest of the cast is not to be forgotten, adding their own spunk to each of their characters.
The whole idea of essentially telling the stories backwards was a very neat way of playing the story and also made it somewhat intriging. I wish more movies and writers could be as inspiring as Charlie Kauffman, because this movie is just absolutly amazing. I can't say enough about! It is just such a beautiful love story, I promise you will love it!!
groundhog day deja vu?
posted on 24 Aug 2009My wife asked this early in the movie. She's not a Jim Carrey fan, or a fan of nonlinear movies, so she left early on to do something else. At the beginning of the film, there were four of us watching it: My son and his wife, my wife and I. By the end of the movie, it was just my son and me.I was trained initially as a biopsychologist, so the basic premise of this movie really appealed to me. Is it possible to erase a person's memories of some person or events? If so, how would it be done? By the way, the name of the memory-erasing outfit in the movie is Lacuna, Inc., or something of the sort. Lacuna is a hole, like a hole in your hearing, or a hole in your memory.I thought the acting was great in the movie, particularly Carrey and Winslett, both actors I like to watch. All in all, I found the movie haunting and wouldn't mind watching it again, something I rarely do with movies. After all, there are so many I haven't seen that I don't want to waste what time I have left in life revisiting movies I've already seen--unless it's "The Usual Suspects," or "Brazil," or "12 Monkeys," or . . . . What the hell, it's obvious there are lots of movies I would want to see again, and again, and . . . .I also really liked "Adaptation," which I gather is by the same writer. If you like movies that'll make you think, check this one out.
So little to say in so much time
posted on 24 Aug 2009Perhaps this film would have been better had it been shorter, I don't know. All I know is that I'm quite disappointed with it. I didn't expect anything special (after all I didn't choose this film, my boyfriend did) but I did expect something, anything, to happen. But no... I might as well have left after the first 30 minutes, gone down to the nearest pub for a pint of cider and a chat with some friends, and come back to see the last 15 minutes without missing anything of importance to the story. I didn't do that though. Maybe I should have. Oh well. I'm guessing it just wasn't my kind of film. Spending more than an hour watching someones memories of lost love isn't exactly my idea of entertainment. I give this film 2/10.
definition for HEIGHT OF STUPIDITY!!!!!!!!!
posted on 24 Aug 2009oh.my god.I started watching this movie around 10 thinking that it would be one of the master pieces but within half an hour i decided to shutdown my system!!!!!!its slower than the slowest!!!!!!i have seen many movies equally slower but with a much more interesting path!!!!!i don't blame the lead characters as they don't have much to do with this disaster movie!!!!one thing is for sure!!!!!i have wasted 5 hours totally(4 hours for downloading it and 1 hour for watching it!!!).i don't see any positives in the movie at any part!!!!!this may be a critically acclaimed film but i don't agree with that.pls avoid this film even though u r a fan of Jim and kate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Truly one of Jim Carrey's best roles, BUT...
posted on 23 Aug 2009...the plot goes nowhere! I found this movie to be extremely confusing, jumping from scene to scene and from one point in time to another and back again without having anything coherent holding it together. However, having said that, Jim Carrey is great. He looks absolutely adorable with his 5 o'clock shadow and longish hair and does none of the crazy antics that he's known for in his comedies. I thoroughly enjoyed him in a serious role and would like to see him do more, but in a movie that also has a well-told story that is understandable and more engaging for the audience. Kate Winslet also plays an off-beat part and does so with aplomb.
See it if you're a Jim Carrey fan or if you're not but would like to watch something that might change your mind about him (at least this movie goes to show that he has genuine talent and is amazingly multifaceted); see it for the way the leads play their roles, which are very different from their normal fare.
4.5 stars
posted on 21 Aug 2009This DVD was a gift to my daughter, and we watched it with her. She says it's the best movie she's ever seen. I wasn't quite as enthralled as she was, but I enjoyed it very much anyway.
When the movie opens, Joel (Jim Carrey) impulsively skips work and goes to the shore, where he meets a blue-haired woman, Clementine (Kate Winslet) and they hit it off. But then strange things start happening.
Turns out, Clementine has had boyfriend Joel erased from her mind. When he gets the letter from the memory-erasing clinic informing him of this, he decides to have her erased from his mind as well.
The movie jumps back and forward in time, which can be a little disorienting, though I think that was the point. Oddly enough, the story flows well that way, as things learned in one scene impact the meaning of the next regardless of where they fit in the chronology, and the story is much more effective than if it had been told in strict chronological order.
I suspect part of the difference between my daughter's "best movie ever" and my 4.5 stars is that I've read and watched a lot more science fiction than she has, and the concept of erasing memories isn't a new one for me. I did enjoy the details of the technique in this one, though I'd have liked to see it explored a little more thoroughly. For example, much was made of needing to find every single object connected with the person to be erased, but we never saw the consequences of missing something.
I was surprised, though, that she liked the romance of the movie--she's usually pretty cynical about such things. I, of course, loved the "true love conquers all" as well as the twists when things started going wrong.
A film that proves Kaufman's lustiness.
posted on 20 Aug 2009Stories of love. Yeah, you can see many of them in the movies, in the playhouses, anywhere. But REAL stories of love and passion... It's a different point. In "Eternal Sunshine" the love is expressed as a powerful; unique thing. Real romances can't be erased. Kaufman shows that in an 'eccentric',modern and keen way. A way that will be eternally in your mind, probably. Jim Carrey's and Kate Winslet's talent, of course, it's a fundamental thing for the process of the movie. The freaky Clementine and the shy Joel are really brilliant characters. Michael Gondry's ability is also a good point for this masterpiece. You can go to the theater without any fear, but it's something that can change your life. By the way, rounds and rounds of applause for the best film of the year.
A cerebral odyssey of memory and self-discovery
posted on 20 Aug 2009"Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind" is a searing roller-coaster of those unrelenting, cherished memories we would like to forget but still very much stay with us through life, about how certain memories cannot simply be erased from the mind because the mind sometimes works against our desires and preferences. The film enters us into a world of delirium, of resurfaced memories, and self-discovery, as we tour the world of a man who seeks to obliterate any memory of his "love" Clementine in undergoing a special surgery which allegedly erases unwanted memories. This sounds like a medial concept at the surface, leaving us to wonder how a single surgery can be absorbed into a two hour movie. Once we take a look inside the mind of an obviously confused yet experienced man, the story contorts itself into a brilliant, enjoyable roller-coaster of the man's identity: his relationships, events defining his existence, and certain revealing elements into Clementine's history as well. This is one wild (sometimes too zippy), fascinating, and relentless cerebral odyssey, taking us directly into the source of the mind, and how certain interference to its contents (this surgery in particular) can probably lead to a stampede of other memories in the way, which remind us of exactly why we are who we are. Definitely worth seeing, for its intellectual and cerebral value; a life inside the forever working mills of the mind. ***1/2 out of ****
the idea of this film is remarkable.
posted on 20 Aug 2009Do you want to erase someone from your memory? Dr. Howard Mierzwaik can do it for you. Even Clementine (Kate Winslet) did it, so did Joel (Jim Carrey). What are you waiting for? Top of my mind: the idea of this film is remarkable. Almost half way through the film, the boundaries between consciousness and subconsciousness is faded. That's the good news that emerge from the same screenwriter of "Being John Malkovich" - Charlie Kaufman. I don't know much about cinematography, but I like the camera angle and the mood that constructed by the color grading of this movie. And yes, Jim Carrey performance is brilliant, far better than his acting in his previous drama, Truman Show! Salute!Well, I have to admit that this is a bizarre film, but I like it so much.
An average Joel gets a girl erased from his memory but tries to save the memories.
posted on 20 Aug 2009This film is the best I have ever seen. I cried on four different occasions during the screening of this film. It contains Black Comedy, Drama, Sci-Fi. It is so amazing. I would whole heartedly recommend this film to indie type film lovers. It over all is just a masterpiece of emotions. Out of the thousands of films I've seen this would be in my top three favorites. This film proved Jim Carrey was an amazing actor. And the quote that gave th film it's wacky title-"How happy is the blameless Vesals lot, the world forgetting by the world forgot- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind!- Each prayer accepted and each wish resigned. The shots in this film are "godly". I highly recommend this film for anyone looking for a tear a laugh, a thought, a different light, it is over all the astoundingly brilliant. In every scene of the word.
post-modernism in cinema
posted on 20 Aug 2009"VIRUSED" CINEMAFor 30 years ago, the cinema was "virused" by a new current of movies. Some of us called them as postmodern movies (by the growing of the sens of the already existent concept), others surrealist movies (seen them as adventure of the imagination). These movies are distinguished from other types of movie by deconstruction of our preconceptions and/or by construction of others for a new vision of current reality. It seams that the good way to describe better these kind of movies is to "catalogue" as "weird" because we are introduced in a world strange to us, perceiving socio-cultural values & norms suggested by director and adapted to the reality from our days.I would like to invite you to be part of a love story created by Charlie Kaufman (screenplay) and miss-en-scene by Michel Gondry (director) in the movie - "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless of Mind" in a new vision, absolute originally postmodern. The post-modernism could be consider as a virus which destroys anything is considered conventionally, making his presence when you at least expected and in a variety ways. This current lives in detail, but you can understand and combat it only if you know/have the "soft" of our society. The first sign of virus appears in the title of the movie by keeping with difficulty in mind this title, it is too big continuing his itinerary in the movie's theme: by the reverse rewinding of relationship between Joel (Jim Carrey) and Clementine (Kate Winslet) by flashback during the memories are deleted from Joel's mind by Lacuna team (company specialized in erasing memory). The next victim is the subject of the movie becoming totally weird and complicated in first credits, there is presented naturally the beginning of a relationship between Joel and Clementine until to the dramatic moment of erasing memory of the girl from his mind. When Joel found out, he was completely overwhelmed with grief and the pain ordered him to do the same thing. When Joel is submitted to the erasure memory procedure, the tumultuously love story rewinds in front of our eyes, thus becoming witnesses of attractive and captivating memories. These moments are forgotten in order to reappear moments full of tenderness and optimism, causing Joel to fall in love again of Clementine, even if he knows he can't stay with her anymore, trying to hide memories with her in the most his humility memories of childhood. The relationship begins with boring moments when two persons usually passed through and it finishes with those moments from the beginning when they felt attractive on each other, in order to start to be together again and to know how the relation is going on.The movie was achieved by using very little special and artificial technicals, being approach to a documentary (movie). There were used simple effects (from the beginning of cinema), optic illusions etc. the memories were created from small parts, fragments, impressions, the scenes and the characters being combined in a impressionist way. The physic disappear of Joel's tangible memories were achieved in a practical way, often through removing of some pieces from decor.Willing everything to seam much real and gripping, the director Michel Gondry decided not to be so important Lacuna company which used special equipment of erasing memory another postmodern element in order not seam a SF movie. The time is affected by the devision in 2 simultaneously temporal axis: all secondary characters live their little stories which happened all of its in one night unlike the story of Joel and Clementine which goes on during 2 years. The first axis goes on the future and the second to past.Script, production/direction, cutting, variety of the scenes etc and performance of the actors help us to perceive the value of the memories full of suffering and also of the great memories of a love story.
Simply Unique
posted on 17 Aug 2009this is a spectacular film. one of both winslet and carrey's best roles yet. this movie is more original than any that i have seen. it could be classified as a dark comedy but i believe it is much more of a love story than it is sometimes made out to be. this is really a great movie and i would recommend it to anyone looking for something different than the ordinary chick flicks!

It's still got me thinking...
posted on 30 Aug 2009The thought of Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet in the same movie almost put me off before I entered the theatre, but the prospect of a Charlie Kaufman film was too strong to resist. In fact, both of the leads were gratifyingly good and not at all annoying, Carrey especially. (Note to Jim: do more drama and less of the comedy gurning, like Bruce Almighty!)The basic premise of the film is that Jim and Kate's characters are together, then split up and she decides to erase all memory of him. He discovers this and then decides to go down the same route. That's where the fun starts. In contrast to Adaptation and Being John Malkovich, this has a lot more romance in it and I imagine that many will shed a tear at the film. Having left the cinema almost 48 hours ago, though, I'm still trying to decide whether I like this movie or not. It made me laugh at times, it definitely made me think about whether there's any real point in erasing memories of someone, but I feel that Mr Kaufman may have bitten off more than he can chew this time. The trademark wackiness is still there, coupled with some temporal distortion, but overall I get the feeling that Kaufman's trying too hard. Undoubtedly, it'll do good box office and get good reviews, but it's no Being John Malkovich, or even an Adaption - sorry.
