A comedy of biblical proportions

PLOT SUMMARY

The last time we saw Evan Baxter (Steve Carell), he was being tormented by rival Bruce Nolan onscreen, live from their Buffalo TV station. But as time passed and Evan has made up with Bruce, he's gone onto bigger and better things. Newly elected to Washington D.C. as a congressman, Evan has left Buffalo, New York in pursuit of a greater calling. But that calling isn't serving in the illustrious ranks of America's politics, but being summoned by the Almighty himself (Morgan Freeman), who has handed Evan the task of building a new ark, much as Noah did before. With time passing by and his family belittled by Evan's newfound realization, Evan will have to do the work that God has given him in what promises to be an unusual adventure for a man who just wanted to serve his country, might actually be serving humanity.

After a long drought, a great movie!

posted on 30 Aug 2009

This was just what I was looking for with my family. Something entertaining, funny, and not offensive. I think many reviewers have watched far too many crapola movies and so they don't recognize a good one. Great message...everyone should see it. The special effects were awesome. Carrell was funny, funny. He was a great choice. Sikes was great with her one liners. All the variety of animals and how well trained they were was fascinating. Any lag in comedy was quickly over and more than made up for with the other great features of this film. Much better than the other choices Hollywood has thrown at us lately. It has been months since I have gone to a film, just because there are none of interest. There is so much good in this movie, everyone should see it.

We laugh very hysterical in the movie theaters so did everybody

I say this movie is hysterical. The animals are cute in this film. My mom loves Evan almighty. We laughed historical when he was naked and his hair under. Evan (Steve Carrel) is historical. god (Morgon Freeman) is very nice in this movie. I love that movie too. Sam hates that movie but we all love that movie so same needs to think again about this film Evans (Steve Carrel) dance in the end is to historical. The story is that god (Morgon Freeman) tells Evan (Steve Carrel) to build an ark so he gives him the book how to build an ark. Then Evans (Steve Carrel) hair grows but he can not shave then it will grow back. Now Evan (Steve Carrel) is Norah. Then they where going to take down the ark but then there was a the giant bridge stone had broken then Evan (Steve Carrel) tells them to get in the ark. Every body around the world you like this film it is to Hysterical.

A decent movie, very well made! Stop winning people.

OK, Bruce Almighty was one of a kind, good and funny. Evan Almighty is not Bruce Almighty, we gathered that. Question, why would we expect it to be? For once I am glad this movie took a slightly different direction to be something more than a mere sequel, and I believe they have totally done it. It doesn't even feel like there was a Bruce Almighty before it, if it wasn't for Morgan Freeman who is always great to see. And yes, Steve Carrell is not Jim Carrey, yet who cares? Jim Carrey is good but he is overrated. I don't like Steve Carell really , and wasn't expecting much from him or this movie to be honest after having seen this summer's sequels and "blockbusters", but boy am I glad to be able to come in here and leave a positive comment. This movie totally did it for me. Maybe it wasn't as funny as B.A. but it was funny enough. It was well built, the script and the plot felt complete enough, the acting was very good, the effects great. Most importantly, I followed the entire movie without being annoyed or getting bored, and I even laughed a lot. And the ending, oh I just loved the ending. The kind of climax that Superman Returns so desperately needed but lacked poorly. Now, there were some little things that raised questions or seemed forced, like "How come there were so many kinds of animals just in that specific forest; while it was obvious that only that area was in need of saving, and not all the animals or beings of the world". But, that's the kind of things you can let slip by, 'cause it's just not that relevant. I had read bad reviews about it beforehand, and wasn't expecting much, but they were really wrong. I am not afraid of going too far when I say that even though I liked all the other great movies of this summer like Pirate of the Caribbean 3, or Spiderman 3, or Fantastic 4 etc, they lacked what this movie gave me, a feeling of completion and satisfaction. I was able to honestly say in the end: "I liked it" which I haven't said once this summer. I don't know why so many people are giving bad reviews about this film; it's a good one and they're just being too harsh and expecting I don't know what. Go see this movie and try to enjoy it without prejudice. Trust me, you will. In the end; I would give this movie a 7.5 or 8 score but only because I think most of the bad reviews in here are unfair, I'm giving it a 9. Tung!

Bring Back Bruce

A run of the mill type film, Morgan Freeman must just turn up for the opening of an envelope these days, so sad. The film has amazing effects and the story line holds up without too many leaks. There is undoubtedly a strong religious content as with Bruce Almighty, the carbon footprint message rings out loud and clear, so folks start buying you energy saving light bulbs and hopefully we won't have to see a trilogy of this sorry excuse of a sequel. I can't help feeling there was a feeling of the Flintstones about it! If you have seen the film you will know what I mean about the dam? Anyway, the kids will love it so all is not lost.

Sacrilegiously unfunny

EVAN ALMIGHTY (2007) ** Steve Carell, Morgan Freeman, Lauren Graham, Johnny Simmons, Graham Phillips, Jimmy Bennett, John Goodman, Wanda Sykes, John Michael Higgins, Jonah Hill, Molly Shannon, Ed Helms, (Cameo: Jon Stewart as himself) Strained 'sequel' to "BRUCE ALMIGHTY" with Carell's jerk anchorman Evan Baxter leaving TV to begin his stint as a freshman Congressional rep has his hands full when God (Freeman reprising his holy role; Jim Carrey wisely avoided the 'calling') demands he build an ark like Noah and the hilarity ensues (or should have). The Godforsaken sitcom-y script by Steve Oedekerk, Joel Cohen & Alec Sokolow is absolutely lame and only Carell's amiable persona transcends his vain Evan into something resembling a human being. The end result is a lot of bird poop gags and overall bloat (reportedly costing $175 M for the CGI F/X). Sykes steals the show as Evan's sarcastic assistant. Sacrilegiously unfunny. I Liked It!

This version of the Almighty series resembles the Oh, God! series. As a matter of fact, a remake of _Oh, God!_ will be out this year according to IMDb here. However, instead of George Burns as God in the Oh, God! series of movies, we get Morgan Freeman. The main character God works with also changes.I really liked _Evan Almighty_, but I haven't seen _Bruce Almighty_. Steve Carell and Morgan Freeman play Evan and God respectively, and I liked the family members too -- wife and three kids played by Lauren Graham, Johnny Simmons, Graham Phllips, and Jimmy Bennett respectively. John Goodman plays the bad guy. I was distressed about watching it, but the flick gave a pleasant surprise and had a good amount of humor. It also had a lot of heart. I highly recommend it! 10/10

What I enjoyed most about this entertaining film are all the many messages: That God wants us to protect the environment, in general; and to fight both corruption in government, and suburban sprawl, specifically. Dams can (and do) wreak terrible havoc on the environment, that elected officials quickly forget why they were elected in the first place. That it is so easy put the needs of your career before the needs of your family. One of my favorite scenes was when God shows Evan how breathtakingly beautiful the land was before it was converted into McMansions. He did so in such a non-judgmental and gentle way, it made the loss feel all the more palpable! Another scene that left a lump in my throat was seeing all animals marching into the ark, two by two. When I saw the orangutans, who are so incredibly intelligent and beautiful, and at the same time such an endangered species - a tear rolled down my cheek! Then another memory instantly came to mind - about the construction of a real ark. You might be saying to yourself , "this Amazon reviewer must be off his rocker." No, it's true! This ark is being constructed by the Norwegian government on an island in the Arctic Ocean. It won't be holding animals! It will literally be preserving, in a sort of suspended animation - the seeds of life! Every important food crop, and other plant life, on the face of the planet will be preserved in a fortress-like bunker deep inside a mountain! Bravo for the Norwegian government's foresight! But I digress... This movies greatest strength is that it's gentle. Destruction of the wilderness, corruption in government, endangering innocent peoples lives, putting your family second to your career and forgetting your conscience, are all potentially heavy topics, which are handled in Evan Almighty with great finesse! My hats off to the filmmakers for a job well done! The only two other movies I can recommend that directly concern protecting the environment is the brilliant Canadian film: Spirit Bear, based on a true story. And, Hoot! a delightful film for the entire family about a group of children determined to save an endangered species from the bulldozer. I vote for Hollywood to start making more movies about cherishing the environment! Evan Almighty proves you can both entertain and advocate for protecting this beautiful world of ours - at the same time!

Evan all-mightier?

posted on 04 Aug 2009

Not really! In fact, less mightier! As family comedy it kind of works and although you don't necessarily need to have seen the first one, you better do so, because it's ... better! The one good thing you can say about Evan 2, is that it doesn't just copy part 1, with another actor. But then again, maybe it would have been a more light hearted and faster comedy movie ....The religious under- and overtones are all over the movie and they're almost fine, but tend to consume a great deal of it. It almost seems as if this was sponsored by the church. Now it depends on your point of view, if that's a good thing or not. You might even like or dislike the movie more than me, because of that. One thing is for sure: Morgan Freeman is (an acting) "God"! It's up to you now, if you want to watch it or not!

Oh how wrong they are

posted on 04 Aug 2009

I have went to the trouble of registering with IMDb because I could not believe that this movie has managed an average of 5.8. That would suggest it is watchable, its not: not funny, not well scripted, not well acted and certainly not impressive when it comes to special effects.I enjoyed Bruce almighty to a degree, not the best comedy in the world, but it didn't struggle with its running time. There was no need for a sequel of any sorts and certainly not one of these Hollywood spin-off moneymakers. I do love Steve Carell, but even he comes across badly in this film and why Morgan Freeman continues to stain his career with rolls like this is beyond me.Be advised, avoid this like a biblical plague of locusts!

Idiotic and insulting

My question? WHERE did the $175 million go? I'll assume that the total cost includes the marketing tab, which can often be more than the production costs of a big studio film. Otherwise, this bomb swallowed around $250 million, and I doubt that. While this flick has a bit of elaborate CGI, it's nothing compared to any number of big-budget sci-fi movies, which have cost considerably less. There are already a ton of reviews in here, going over the same details, time and again. So, I'll hit one aspect of the plot that REALLY annoys me...the final "flood." So, a few hundred people are saved, in the subdivision of DC, where most of the film is set. They board the ark, and then ride a HUGE tidal wave through the center of DC, ending at The Capitol. Have many hundreds of thousands of people would have died? This feel-good, pandering "religious" film plays stupid, at this point - turning into some cartoonish parable. It is, what it is. And what it is, is a bloated, idiotic attempt to make a "family-friendly" film, presumably tailored to some undiscerning block of religious viewers.

Bad.

This was, simply put, a bad movie. As a big fan of Steve Carell, I had high hopes, at least for his performance. Unfortunately, he could do nothing to save it. There were even times when I found him to be incredibly annoying. The pace is too fast, to the point where watching the beginning of the film is like seeing a montage of events that happened prior. There is little to no character development, especially for Evan's family. While the film is visually stunning, an overinflated budget cannot always save a film from a poor script, poor acting, and poor direction. Don't waste your time unless you're with children.5/10

Not so funny and Too short

posted on 31 Jul 2009

After I watched this movie, I realize that the time the people in the cinema don't laugh so many time as I was thinking. The movie is poorly in comedy. Oriented to children's. I think that the plot it's good, but it could make a longer movie and include better jokes. Plus, there's something that could make the movie more interasting... for example, the construction of the ark... it's too short, too easy and there's not a bit of drama or suspense!!.If I had to choose between this movie and Bruce Almighty (the original one), I choose Bruce Almighty...Marcelo "Ofesad" Maza.

Religously Fanatic!

This movie has became a spin off sequel from "Bruce Almighty" that Morgan Freeman has return to play God in this sequel. I just rented this movie yesterday at the Video Store, and the whole movie turned out poorly for some people to watch. But it's obviously, confusing for some people to follow. Because, The Separation of Church and State has just run down the political rights. What a great religious comedian that Steve Carrel played like Jim Carrey did ? But Jim cannot return and play "Bruce Almighty", and I don't know wonder why he can't play him again. It's up to the director's choice. This spin off movie is based on the crossover of Politics and Religion. I like the scene that Evan (Played by Steve Carrel) is running for Senator of the White House and he freaked everyone especially, his wife and kids. I laughed my tail off during this movie.

All Mighty? Not really...

In Bruce Almighty, Bruce actually became God's sorta replacement, but in this, Evan wasn't; he was just called to perform an errand so the title was perhaps misleading, but that didn't stop me enjoying it any less. After seeing the trailer, with mention of Abraham, Moses, Joan of Arc and Bruce, I went to see the film with some misgivings, for Jesus and Mohammed were missing - but then Jesus, according to doctrine was part of the Holy Trinity and Mohammed received revelations from Archangels, and did not talk to God Himself - but then Joan of Arc was in the same position, so why was she mentioned? The film revealed all: Joan was the name of Evan's wife and as she got involved in the Ark building, well, it was nice little pun, like the rainbow at the end; arc-en-ciel, the French call it, even if the French for Ark is Arché, but let's not pick holes here. The best part for me was the participation of the animals who helped Evan, and Wanda Sykes's reaction to the alpaga spitting was hilarious. I liked Evan's kids; kids in movies now are just awful, but the youngest with all his smart-ass animal remarks made me laugh. I was half afraid that this would be a preachy or Biblically inclined film, but it struck me as a mild parable about human relations (and shady business practices thrown in for good measure). Nice and powerful flood scene with the dam breaking and the water thundering down in force; the fact that Evan was not Almighty was brought out when the ark faced the bridge and in the end he was forced to plead 'A little help here?'. Another lesson: Evan did not respect animals: his tone to the horses and the early ones was very cavalier - so God made him work with them. Frankly I loved all the animal scenes and would gladly have run away with those two lovely horses. If God is as easy going and amiable as Morgan Freeman made Him, then I don't think most of us have much to fear after death - and if you don't believe in that sort of thing, no matter. Many thanks for this space.

Awful

The only redeeming feature of this movie is Steve Carell. Like John Wayne, I've never seen Steve Carell stretch too far as an actor, but it doesn't matter. He always plays his one role perfectly. As Marty Feldman once said, comedy must have internal consistency. You can have 4 men on stage sitting in garbage cans, and that's fine, but if you bring a fifth man on stage who isn't in a garbage can, you must then explain to the audience why he is not also in a garbage can.Why doesn't Evan accept his role as a messenger of God? Why, when he does accept it, is he so profoundly embarrassed by it? Why isn't anyone more impressed with the way that animals follow Evan around (they are explained away by the unthinking doubters as "trained animals" possibly from a circus). There's a terrible flood at the end, and most everyone we see hops on the ark and is saved, but surely thousands of people would have been killed by the flood; there is no post-disaster emotional atmosphere at the end. Instead, most of congress has finally seen the light and is about to prosecute the lone incorrigibly bad congressman for "profiteering".I gotta admit: I also liked the fish in the aquarium reacting to the presence of Evan.

Baffled by the Negative Reviews - It's just not the same type of movie as 'Bruce'!

posted on 25 Jul 2009

I'm mildly baffled by the hyper-negative comments on this film. Because of them, and what many critics said as well, I went into this thinking it would be just terrible. I was, however, quite pleasantly surprised. This is a sweet, good-natured film that left me feeling quite happy.I think what irked the unsatisfied reviewers is that this is absolutely NOT 'Bruce Almighty'. Anyone who expected that is going to be disappointed. I'm sorry that marketing relied so much on billing it as a sequel, because it's really just the same God operating within the same movie world. This is a much more family-oriented and "safe" comedy. Many of the jokes are juvenile at best. The special effects aren't dazzling and the moments where the comedians in the film try to milk their standard style for all it's worth are often just uncomfortably bad. As said in several other reviews as well, Carell is at his worst when he's obviously trying too hard to be Jim Carrey. But none of those things took away from my enjoyment of the film. The messages were really quite well done and the more subtle bits of humor were fantastic. I thought they did a great job of giving each bizarre biblical occurrence a particular purpose and meaning in the modern story as well. Morgan Freeman's God is, as last time, absolutely wonderful. He's mischievous, good-natured, funny, and great to watch.I thought 'Bruce Almighty' was pretty forgettable and certainly not some genius comedy that this film doesn't measure up to. It's simply not the same kind of film. I think if you go into it as a family film with some nice messages, you'll enjoy it a lot more.

Refreshing

posted on 25 Jul 2009

Obviously not for everyone, but my 29-year-old wife & I (34) really enjoyed this movie. We don't have kids, but thought it was very honest and Steve Carell is fantastic. Morgan Freeman does a great job as well in his role.If you're not looking for complexity, but just want an uplifting, good-natured film this is a great choice. It also hits on the struggle a lot of us face of whether to listen to or ignore what you should REALLY be doing vs. what YOU think you should be doing.A movie with heart:Too many comedies these days go for shock or crudeness to impact the viewer. This movie is great in that it makes you laugh and feel good, not violated.A fun and refreshing movie. Recommended.

Family Friendly and funny in parts... but something tells me they tried to hard.

posted on 23 Jul 2009

Steve Carrel returns as Evan Baxter, who was in the previous film which starred Jim Carrey as Bruce Nolan in "Bruce Almighty" where Steve played as Evan the boasty newsreader turned Anchor. The movie has a funny plot where Evan is visited by god (Gordan Freeman) who warns Evan of a flood, and that he must build an arc to save the citizens of Chicago, and the animals that broke out of a local zoo.The plot though sounds original and funny, isn't pulled off to perfection. The comedy of the film feels like it is lay-ed on too thick, with cheesy comebacks, or the typical falling over something (like we didn't see that coming). Certain parts are cringe worthy as Evan in the movie is also trying to be the family man, and usually does "Dances" which are supposed to be funny. To younger audiences maybe... but to some quite embarrassing.Although i enjoyed watching the movie i felt as i have mentioned that they tried to hard to make this film funny, also it does not live up to Bruce Almighty's comedy feel and makes Bruce Almighty look like the godfather of comedies.Overall - A sometimes laughable film... but nothing to make a song and dance about.

Why Did This Rate So Low!?

posted on 23 Jul 2009

What a wonderful film! I can highly recommend it. I'm a male in my mid 30's, I usually watch gory horror or the Marx Brothers films, but I loved it! :) Felt like a return to good old fashioned family entertainment.(Unlike the disappointment in recent films such as, "Transformers", which you'll end up explaining to your child what mastebation is, due to a very poor taste joke. What young boy wouldn't want to see giant robots fight, or a Dad for that matter that remembers it from his younger days wanting to share that with his young son, but I digress!)I don't think it's a spoiler to say there wasn't one swear word, as far as I could tell. (The word, "Penis", is used twice, the context is informational about animals.)*** Possible Spoilers ***It is about a man and his relationship with God and also his family. It also deals with doing what God wants you to do when everyone is laughing at you, even if you can't see where God is going with the situation. (For those reading this I'm being super careful not to spoil anything plot wise... however...)The interesting thing too is the way it brings the old story to life, in the sense that Noah must have had to deal with similar adversities in his society and even with his own family. You can't tell me back then that Noah didn't have to contend with, "Oh, so God told you to do it!?" (What a loony!) Behind his back.It was done really tastefully, really well done. It had the potential to offend Christians and doesn't, in fact God is shown in a truthfully loving light! On the other hand it had the potential to offend Atheists, but it shouldn't due to the non forceful way it deals with the topic matter.*** End Possible Spoilers ***Kids will love it for the animals and the funny situations and adults will enjoy the clean and clever one liners. It's a feel good film and as far as I'm concerned it's been along time since I felt this good about a film! Enjoy the film, I know I did! :)

Sweet film

I saw an advanced preview. A sequel to 'Bruce Almighty', A workaholic Dad and husband becomes a congressman and moves to a peaceful little rich town. At work there's something fishy and its 'wolf' eat 'wolf'. He prays to fulfil his campaign promise - to change the world. Weird things start happening to him including goafer wood being dropped outside his house and Gen 614 turning up everywhere. When he sees God himself (Morgan freeman) he thinks hes gone nuts, especially when God tells him to build an ark as a flood is coming. Evan is unwilling to do it but after a little 'persuasion' from God almost involving him getting fired from work, Evan agrees. This is a very sweet and funny film, it is especially heart-warming seeing Evan spending time with his kids building the ark and the animals joining in to help. It has a very moral message: Trust in God. The slight twist at the end helps to enforce this. Was slow and corny at times but still an entertaining film for all the family. :)
