"Funtastic" Four
posted on 28 Aug 2009Let's preface this entire review with this...I never watched the Fantastic Four cartoons or read the comic books. That being said... This was a fun movie. It had some pretty exciting special effects, especially the human torch/ Johnny Storm scenes. It had some fun humor...OK, it was kind of "campy" humor in spots, but hey... what can be more fun than a silly joke or gag? I thought the story was interesting, especially since I personally did not know the history of how they came to be the Fantastic Four. I don't understand why people have to compare movies to other movies...can't a movie just be a fun experience...this was a fun popcorn movie...a fun date flick, and a fun family movie...my 6 year old really enjoyed it as well. Go and have fun!
What a great surprise
posted on 24 Aug 2009Not really wanting to see this film as I had heard nothing but bad things about it and already having a lot of my childhood faves destroyed by the Hollywood grinding machine I sat down to watch with every intension of hating it. But to my confession I have to emit that this is a really good fun summer movie worthy everybody viewing and respect. It's got it's down point sure, but I don't want to go into that just yet as I also don't want to give and of the plot away (well what there is of a plot anyway. The best surprise was how each of the actors playing the Fantastic Four really tried there hardest to nail there charters (even with the not so good adjusted back story) Michael Chiklis standing out as The Thing Ben Grim. He just seem to get the guy an example being that he would standing up for the geeky Reed Richards one minute and then be bullying him the next. And I couldn't help but tingle when he used his catch phase (It's clobbering Time). The only charter that was sort of Pete Tong wrong was Dr Doom. For starter's he was American (If you read the comic book you'll that thats just wrong) and his origin was changed. He seemed to go kind of nuts for no real reason and I don't no what he hoped to gain by trying to kill the F4 team. Dr Doom little subplot was lifed straight from spider made (Man looses his company control from the Board of directors, Man kills the Board). I'm going to try and make the few bad point short and sweet. The Effect were pretty thin (No pun intended) When reed stretched his body just has cheep as chips CGI written all over it. And there seem to be big chunks missing from the plot (How did the get back from the mission in space let alone to Quarantine and didn't Dr Doom get stuck in there as well). Enough of downers I'd like to finish on a positive note. Plus point of this film is it's got some good witty humour lifted from the comic book and the main characters interact just like in the book. Everyone seem's to picking on Reed even though he's the leader of the team and on top of that Jonny gives a lot of stick to Ben. Again this ain't the greatest of comic book adaptations nor is it dark like Batman or charter driven like Spider-man and Hulk. But It is Fun, sometimes exciting, Funny, sexy in place's and all round summer fun that even none F4 fans can enjoy. I was determined that I would hate it but I will hold my hand up and say that I was wrong to think so.
Unwatchable
posted on 24 Aug 2009I haven't even come close to watching whole thing, so my review isn't exactly going to be fair, but then that's why I named my review as I did. I find it literally unwatchable. Painfully unwatchable. Excruciatingly unwatchable. True, I'm a fan of the source material, but my complaints aren't about the lack of fidelity to that source material; this film strikes me as dire on any level.I caught what little of it I did on cable TV and found it impossible to sit through for more than a minute at a time, such that I soon gave up altogether. One look at the Thing's ridiculous rubber suit and I just knew this movie was actually worse than I'd heard. There's simply no way I could sit through the entire movie, at least not without RiffTrax.
I'm just going to make this short
posted on 22 Aug 2009Most of the other REAL reviews have said everything I want to. I'll just say this.I would have given this movie a 3-4 out of 10 because while you can tell from other reviews how the script was God-Awful and the direction was poor, the Human Torch and the Thing were alright in my opinion. Sure, they were cheesy, but they made me laugh and I could almost get into the scenes where they were without the presence of the other two.HOWEVER This gets a 1/10 to help even out the rating that FOX HAS CORRUPTED BY USING STUDIO-PLANTED 10/10s. This truly disappoints me. I know that studios pay off small time hack critics all the time, but this is really low and pathetic. Try hiring talent and managing your projects better. This movie was completely sub-par on everything except the cgi (and most people who are more picky than I on special effects generally agree that it could have been much better too.)
Fantastic Four is great!!!
posted on 22 Aug 2009The movie was great! I am so glad that finally there is a comic book movie suitable for ANY age. There were SO many children in the audience laughing, and it was nice to see that. I'm not a kid. I'm 37 years old, but I enjoyed the movie tremendously. It is not dark like other comic book movies. It is very light-spirited and full of humor. I just couldn't help it but to smile throughout the movie. I'm glad that all those critics are eating their words now. At first, I was mad when I read all those dumb reviews. Obviously those movie critics don't have a clue what the public likes to see because the movie was #1 at the box office during the opening week. And it continues to make money in US, as well as other countries. I know it was #1 in UK also. Good for you, Fantastic Four!!! You rubbed it in into those critics' faces. I can't wait to see Fantastic Four 2. I'm sure it'll be as good as the 1st one or even better. GREAT MOVIE!!!
Spider-man and X-men meet...
posted on 22 Aug 2009And create a retarded baby. This whole movie had generic written all over it. The characters were lame, there was no real chemistry between the characters, and the plot was predictable. When comparing this movie to the comics, the style is portrayed accurately. But honestly, is that a good thing? Daredevil, as demonic as it was, at least had a different darker edge to it. Fantastic Four was just as you'd expect it to be, another generic superhero movie.. Sin City, although the mood evoked was accurate to the comics, had creativity, and that goes a long way. Also, I don't think it was a coincidence that the three characters that did NOT turn into a monster all looked like supermodels. Again, quite predictable. This movie will only appeal to those with weak minds. Oh, and Ioan Gruffudd, I liked you in Hornblower. Thats where you belong, thats where your talent is truly expressed.
It's depth of emotion combined with the best action/fight scenes ever seen means this could very well be the best movie produced this year. Yes, Fantastic in every way.
posted on 20 Aug 2009This movie delivers on its characters, and the action scenes are not only the best I've seen in years but they also advance plot and build character, and that's the best kind of action sequences. The Thing flexes his muscles constantly. Reed proves why he's been called Mr. Fantastic for over forty years. The Torch may actually steal the show in every scene he's in. Doom is a vicious but persuasive bastard. And the lovely Jessica Alba is as hypnotic as ever. What's not to love? This cast delivers in a very special way. I can't wait for the sequel. This is defiantly one of my top 10 favorite movies ever made.
Disappointed with the four
posted on 20 Aug 2009I did not know all that much about the Fantastic Four before I saw this movie. After seeing it I have no interest in learning anything more. It was like they were going thru the motions of trying to make a hit movie, add a few witty lines throw in some flashy effects and BAM it's a hit. Well Unfortunately I think it fell flat, it was pretty boring, lame and thrown together. The movie just seems to end Dr.Doom gets real mad there is a 10 minute fight they attempt to tie up loose ends in the plot then it's over. I must admit The Thing was O.K. at least they tried to add some depth to his character. The rest was all just pointless fluff. Hollywood needs to stop raiding Marvel comics what's, next a Dazzler movie!
Better than what everyone thinks
posted on 18 Aug 2009I saw this movie and I thought it was better than what all these other critics are saying. When I read the comic books, I liked them not for their action content but for their character base. The Fantastic Four was never about going right into a battle without knowing what you have to fight with first. The battles in Fantastic Four were always about teamwork and unity against evil. And when they weren't battling, you got to see who these characters were. That's the great thing about the Fantastic Four. They helped people relate to the heroes more. You have four very different people joining together to fight crime because of a freak accident. Ben Grimm is the blue collar "everyman". Sue Storm is the beautiful driving force of the group. Johnny Storm is the young, thick-headed show off. And lastly, Reed Richards is the thinker, the brains, the father figure. That was what was so Fantastic about this comic book series. Not the action. I'm glad that the movie was so faithful to the comic books. I also have nothing to complain about the acting. At times, it felt like script reading but every single thing that Ben Grimm did as The Thing made up for it all. He, in my opinion, did an excellent job at capturing the inner struggle Ben Grimm went through every day. I liked this movie and I recommend seeing it not for the action, but for the heart this movie has. It's worth at least a matinée ticket.
Things I would've done differently
posted on 14 Aug 2009...or at least liked to have seen in the movie I thought the FF movie was a bit to slow for a comic to film adaptation. Instead of all the endless chatting about pitying regarding The Thing, watching Reed & Sue fumble thru a relationship & seeing Johnny trying to be a big stud. They could've picked up the pace & at the same time keep the story they wanted in tact.Things should've been more on-the-fly, instead of this endless slow pacing there should've been sequences of them being forced into their superhero roles against low end super powered villains & your common thug. I wouldn't have them attack these situations as a team, mostly as individuals & maybe the occasional duo, fumbling their way into saving the day and learning their powers at the same time. With this pacing, things wouldn't have gotten so boring for me, Johnny would've learned how fly way ahead of the game & instead of making his ability to fly an (un)exciting moment at the end of the movie they could've instead chose to make it his ability to control what part of him burst into flames (i.e.: saving some hot chick from a deadly fall by shutting off the flames around his arms and catching her) Sue & Reed could've fallen in love when Sue noticed that Reed is a man of action in the heat of an intense situation, instead of the generic walks on the park and discussion of problems. As for Ben Grimm, it would've just been cool as f/ck to see him get into a super-powered bar room brawl on Clancy Street. The ending would've pretty much gone the same way, they join together as a team and fight doom, but it would've been a lot more interesting, and the battle would be more complex rather than each doing 1 single power ranger move. It would've been heavier attacks by both Doom & the team with a much more climatic ending.
Fantastic Four or is it REALLY fantastic?
posted on 12 Aug 2009Well, I just watched the movie on DVD last night for the second time, since my first time was at the movies, because 1st- I am a huge fan of comics, not necessarily F.F., and 2nd a big budget movie came out, so I went to support. What a bad movie, and last night I gave it another chance and it got worse. The best thing about this movie is the special effects, except Reed Richard's stretching effects. The acting is pretty bad and most of the time it is the director's fault. The extras on the DVD is about the special effects, and it has nothing to do with the content of the movie, and I think they know that there was no content, so the best thing they could do is talk about special effects- well big deal. If you want special effects AND content, go see King Kong! I see that there is an F.F.2 in works...I REALLY don't understand why! Spider-Man & X-Men...sure, but this movie needs to be buried.
not bad work Mr. story
posted on 08 Aug 2009I was very upset at hearing that Director Tim Story was helming this project. Knowing his past works (Taxi & barbershop) and the past failed attempts with this title, I was not confident in his ability to tell this story.I WAS WRONG.The story and Character development of this project were tight and the special effects were awesome as well. There are some aspects of the film that I still cal into question (Jessica Alba has neither the age or the depth for the sue storm Character) but I understand certain concessions of making a large budget studio project. (Besides ALBA IS HOT, especially in the skin tight blue suit) All in all, I say "Good work Mr. Story" I'm sorry for doubting you>
Just the beginning
posted on 08 Aug 2009I believed this was a great movie. Although it centered mostly on the problems of the four main characters, it showed development of the relationships between them. It showed that they were getting used to their powers, and how all of them would work together to overcome it.The cast was great, I couldn't have asked for a better one. I'm personally a big fan of Ioan Gruffudd, and thus made me love the movie even more. Jessica Alba did very well was Sue Storm, and Chris Evans served as the comedy relief which I loved. My least favorite was Michael Chiklis only because I thought everything centered on him. Overall, this was a great movie. Fantastic Four definitely will remain one of the movies I will never forget.
Extended Edition changed my opinion
posted on 08 Aug 2009Originally when I saw the theatrical version of the film, I found it very cheesy, to rushed and unconvincing based off the dialog and the story telling. The editing was very poor and at times I felt bored and felt it wasn't even making sense. However keeping this short, I got myself a copy of the extended edition and found the changes incredibly remarkable, notably the fact they actually add a lengthy amount to the film, and that I believe makes the film now watchable, in my opinion, disregard the theatrical and get hooked on this extended edition, it actually builds story on all the characters, the plots are not rush anymore, the dialog being stretched made the conversations held in the film more mature and believable, not so artificial and Jessica Alba seems to be acting now, its like they removed all those scenes intentionally for the theatrical to make it look like she cant act. However it still has a few moments you kind of question, "are they doing this for fun or are they retarded?" but on positive side rent or buy the extended edition and enjoy a re-release made well and worth every penny.
finally a film that puts the fun back into comic films
posted on 06 Aug 2009After a succession of dark and/or self-important comic book adaptations, such as batman, sin city, spiderman and the like, fantastic four makes a very refreshing change. It is very bright, lots of colour, and a fun, light-hearted tone, with a plethora of puns and gags which will have you giggling and groaning at the same time.It also makes a refreshing change to see them (eventually) embracing their powers as gifts, and using them and not being shy about remaining anonymous, as most other superheroes will do. This perhaps makes the four seem more human - the public know exactly who they really are. Anyway, this also gives a touch of grounding in realism guys that looked like that, with powers like that we'd know all about them surely? It's not like a pair of glasses each would make them Joe (or Josephine) regular, a la Clark Kent (how did Lois buy that for so many years anyway?) But I digress. Ioan Gruffudd manages a competent if rather textbook American accent, and Jessica Alba fulfils her assigned role by being as hot as ever (though why are female scientists always knockouts? They never were in my school!). The stars of the piece though are Michael Chiklis' heartfelt portrayal of the thing, and Julian McMahon camping it up superbly as the villain. Chris Evans (no, not that one!) rounds out the heroic quartet as the arrogant guy who takes full advantage of his fame, cut straight from the template. The special effects are superb (although that comes almost as standard nowadays), and all of our heroes get chance to fully show off their powers, even if some of them have been amplified from the original comics. One criticism of the film is that although running at 1 hour 45 minutes the story was too short in itself, and that most of the film seemed to be all about setting up a series of sequels - as if this was merely the first chapter of the full film. Be that as it may, as a franchise launcher, it has certainly whetted the appetite. A sequel will be eagerly anticipated, and will be expected to improve on its predecessor.
Banter, Alba and expensive special effects paid for by cynical advertisers
posted on 06 Aug 2009...but wasn't it fun! Well..a bit. I liked Alba's jumpsuit! For the most part though Fantastic Four (note the irritating loss of the group's personal pronoun)is a photo-chemical womb incubating a stillborn celluloid-foetus. It just might be the most cynically commercial movie you've seen in years. In fact, if your one of the gazillion companies(including Fox of course who made it in the first place) who paid up front to get the human torch on ESPN or the Thing to wear Nikes, then you must be delighted to watch a flick in which the only real characters are the corporate sponsors and the only reason to keep watching is the (vain) hope that Jessica will take off her clothes prematurely before she becomes translucent. Sure, its colourful, inoffensive stuff - cine-ice cream you might say (and even if you wouldn't, I have) but these comic book flicks don't have to be so light do they? X-men, which began this noughties marvel onslaught, had vague pretencions of substance, Batman Begins wasn't entirely mindless - it doesn't have to be this way y'know. In fact watching the Four, you're reminded of why the film snobs hate Hollywood. Its Crude, over blown commercial candy floss with admittedly likable stars who get to do very little but joke around in the kind of self-satisfied tongue in cheek style we all despise. Fox should remember that the kind of limp and fluffy Eighties comic-flicks this often resembles lead to a death of these movies toward of the end of that decade. No more of this please.
Another bit of Hollywood Trash.....
posted on 02 Aug 2009Do you know the feeling you have when you see another human in a horrendous accident and you want to look away, but you just cant? Thats the feeling you have when you watch the Fantastic 4. I had this feeling before I watched this movie and it was this feeling alone that drew me to see this film. Like myself, you are probably hoping that the special FX are going to be spectacular, because really, without them the movie may as well be titled the 'Ordinary 4'. Unfortunately, calling it ordinary would be a big understatement. Since I have mentioned the FX already, I may as well start there. Apart from the explosions, Th Human Torch, and possibly 'Doom's' electric bolts, (Star Wars anyone?) it was like I was 10 years old again, watching the cartoons on TV. A big TV; with a hidden team of screenwriters who couldn't write a good character into a movie to save themselves. There was nothing wrong with the acting, McMahon, Alba, Evans, Chiklis, Gruffudd, all did a great job (Gruffudd being the weakest link), but you can dress up crap as much as you like, at the end of the day its still crap. The "Powers" of the Fantastic 4 don't seem to hold their weight against say, those of the X-Men, and you can look forward to an hour long story on how The 4 obtain and begin the cope with them. Joy! The fall of the powerful Victor Von Doom (McMahon) will give you Dejavue of Mr. Osbourne aka, The Green Goblin, and with each attempt to draw you in to each characters inner struggles, you sit and pray for something to happen. Personally, I was hoping for a major blackout and in turn, free tickets. The best part in the movie is when The Thing (Chiklis), saves a civilian laying on the road, by stopping a truck with the good old 'Hip & Shoulder'. Fortunatley enough that scene was in the trailer, so if you have seen the trailer and enjoyed the entire thing, don't ruin it by watching this movie. 1.5 out of 5. - for the truck & the bridge scene.
Under Appreciated
posted on 02 Aug 2009I liked this movie.I don't think it was absolutely wonderful, but it was VERY likable and unique in it's own way.I just can't believe the rating.Even "I" don't like it THAT much, and I find the rating it has "VERY" unfair. You shouldn't compare this to other great superhero films, and if you do, you're going to see this is certainly not better than a lot of them, but alone it is a great movie. The action was good, and the script was different, as opposed to what some might think. The acting was great, and the characters are really likable.I see this movie as under appreciated, and underrated, but that's just me.Sure, it had a few flaws, but what movie doesn't?
Its a popcorn flick!
posted on 31 Jul 2009I wanna start by saying how it annoys me how people think they can be hyper critical of what is and always was gonna be a popcorn flick! Why do you feel that you have to complain about the directing, cinematography, lighting, hairdresser etc etc...A popcorn film is supposed to be fun not serious so take it more lightly.Anyway on to the film, i remember the cartoon series of this which, while extremely dated, was a good giggle and extremely tongue in cheek, i feel the film portrays this very well. My one complaint was Dr Doom and how the character was poorly developed, unlike the Fantastic Four, we barely seen the powers of Doom. The FX were really good and the scene on the bridge was awesome, even compared to the superior Spiderman and Batman, in which this amount of effects would not have been out of place. The critics panned the effects used for the thing but personally i am happy that it is a man in a suit as apposed to a CGI created blob. The film does take on the usual "first in a franchise" feel of character development over plot but i for one would happily watch a sequel if it plays out with as much fun as this. i wanted o give this film 7.5/10 but could only officially rate it 7/10 as opposed to round up to 8/10 as this is a popcorn flick not a ageless classic!

Fantastic Four = Fantastic Film!
posted on 28 Aug 2009I truly think this is the best comic book movie ever made and I'm not exaggerating. Everything in this movie gets exceedingly better as the film plays out. These are not only the most complex characters I've ever seen in a major super hero movie, they're a group of characters who are so well written and full of small, personal moments that they transcend their four-color origins and become living, breathing people whom have pasts, presents and futures. You really feel that they are a family and, by the end of the film, you feel like a part of that family. This is a remarkable feat for an origin film. It beats the first installment of any hero flick I can think of including Superman and Spider-Man.Huge Thumbs Up!
