What a Waste of a Title
posted on 23 Jul 2009Okay, so the direction, acting and writing were all bad, and the budget probably wasn't there to make those things better. Still though, this could easily have been a much better movie, had story choices been made that were more in-line with what made the game great. In the beloved game, the lead character (Carver) is a former special-forces soldier, and is 100% American, complete with accents and vices. He's on vacation, wears a Hawaiian shirt, and seems completely out of his element when first dropped into this island experiment mess. He doesn't want the job of saving the world and would probably rather drink beer by the pool. But people are shooting at him and an unknown protagonist is feeding him instructions over a radio on what he must do to save himself, so he follows along, not seeing any other option, and unraveling the island's mysteries as he goes. He does not seek heroism, but has heroism thrust upon him. Not only does that seem like a pretty good movie premise in and of itself, but staying true to it would have meant giving the millions of potentially ticket-buying game fans exactly what they wanted. The first thing game fans might notice in the movie, and be disappointed by, is that Carver now has a thick German accent. He also fights slippery-like, more reminiscent of a former Olympic medalist than a once-elite military man. Next we have the conflict change, from the fairly unique "guy struggling for survival and escape on a mysterious island" to the rather overdone "guy who charges into dangerous situation to save girl he just met". And there's no mystery, as the entire back-story is explained in the very beginning. That this is a cheap Van-Damme knockoff is bad enough, since Van-Damme movies are often already cheap and knocked-off. That such a film is attached to such a wildly successful game title with so much potential is an insult and a shame.A bit of praise needs to go to the action sequences, fight choreography, and visual/special effects, which were better than I expected given the other elements of this disaster.
Good
posted on 19 Jul 2009I think 2 things have happened with both the rating here and peoples general outlook to the film.First ill explain about an experiment done quite some time ago. Some researchers made sweet;s that looked like dog poo then recorded the reactions to them. They weren't all that good people didn't even want to eat them let alone give it a good rating. The exact same thing has happened here , Bols repuation proceeded him here and it seems to have the same effect while people are watching the film. The film is grate in my opion Uwe did a fantistic job made it witty, funny and full of good action and stunts. But ooo there's a saw word in todays world "stunts" not "special effects" and the far cry crowed was expecting the latter. This is the second bit im chatting about because Uwe has gone for a good old fashioned shoot all the pc gamers feel its a crap film.Well its not, i watched the film with my stoner mates and we loved it. Every film now days is 3 hours long pumped full of special effects and no personality at all=/ This has that and Uwe has a good sense of humor to. The stunts are oldschool, perhaps to much use of slow mo but it seems not to matter in the end. The budget isn't amazing and shows but apart from that the film is good and to top it off a decent tribute to far cry.My personal opion is people should watch a film with a open mind before they rate it.
Just curious if uwe plays or has someone play the games before
posted on 15 Jul 2009I don't really mind the creative ideas interjected in these movies, but seriously. There isn't one coherent part of the game in this movie. That seems to be the trend, buy the rights and then just make a movie that has zero to do with what the fans want. This butchering is almost entertaining because you know you are getting away with hiding behind a lack of skill, and control of money (not yours) that allows you to do this. Play a game, or hire someone to, and please make a real movie, or stand in the boxing ring and have your butt handed to you as you so claim won't happen.wow, 9 lines of text and i was done. had to add blah to bug you, sorry
Average action. Not more, no less.
posted on 05 Jul 2009Nothing special about this one. Uwe Boll gets beaten for several of his movies, so after watching this one i assume he has improved...? The camera work is decent, the action is explosive, the acting is average to poor, the story is predictable, the sex scene is laughable and my low expectations were not disappointed. If you want a cheap action flick, you're not going wrong with this one.For the game pro's in here: This movie is NOT made after "Far Cry: Crysis", but it's predecessor "Far Cry" and only that. Check the box art of both games, Jack Carver was only in the first title and only there you'll see him wearing his infamous Hawaii-shirt.
Great Action Flick with Humor Throughout
posted on 05 Jul 2009I cant believe some of the bad reviews of this flick. Who cares if it isn't your idea of the game. Rate it as a movie. As a movie it has great action scenes, a very good cast that works well together and decent dialog. Unlike many of the action flicks of late this thing has characters with actual personalities. The two leads work well together and have some on screen chemistry.I don't know anything about the game this is based off and don't care. What does concern me is the quality of the movie, which was excellent. Its nice to see a movie where the characters are interacting with each other instead of spitting lame lines at one another. One more thing, the lead female (Emmanuelle Vaugier), its refreshing to see a hottie that can actually act for change, good job. And Til Schweiger pulls off the gruff action hero role flawlessly.Just check this movie out, it's a great lazy Saturday afternoon flick, you wont regret it. I hope to see a sequel to this with at least the same actors playing the lead male and female roles they really made this movie work.
You know what? I LOVED this flick!
posted on 29 Jun 2009It was directed by Uwe Boll. So what? Is that makes this film instantly the worst film ever? I know, Uwe Boll is not the greatest director ever. I saw Bloodrayne and it was pretty awful. But you gotta believe me, Far Cry is an entertaining, action-packed flick, and if you love those "B"-movies from the '80s and '90s you will love this movie as much as I am. Believe me please, and give it a chance! It has some corny jokes but still great! And I mean it! Till Schweiger was good in his role, Udo Kier is an icon, it was a pleasure to watch him, and...Great action, explosions, car-chase, boat-chase, blood, and everything you need! Great movie!
This is much better than Bloodrayne or Alone In The Dark
posted on 21 Jun 2009I just watched the movie, and I played the game, and although little more than 50% is in common, Far Cry movie isn't that bad. It isn't a summer blockbuster, nor instant classic, but, it was never meant to be. It's a nice straight to DVD action flick which will give you 1,5h solid entertainment. Other than basic stuff (characters, name, enemies), movie is set on different location, and as much faster pacing. Action sequences are nice and solid, and effects are also good considering this is a low budget movie. But that's the point, it IS a low budget title, but looking at it it feels much more expensive. Script is OK, most of the time works well, and I have to say that Jack in the movie has a lot in common with game Jack. Both make fun of almost everything, and are more phlegmatic in nature. Val on the other hand isn't that action oriented as her game counterpart. Kier does very nice job bringing Dr. Krieger to life, and frankly, I like this one better. Nobody but Kier could portrait mad German scientist. The only thing about characters that kinda annoyed me is Jack's noticeable German accent, although Till did excellent Job for the performance part. The only major disappointment what I had with the movie is that location was changed from pacific sand beaches to rocky and cold bay like in western Canada/south Alaska. Considering the budget, I understand and forgive. Film is no award nominee nor winner, but a nice rental on a hot or rainy afternoon to fill a void and have house popcorn fun. 6/10 :) P.S. It's faaaar better than Bloodrayne or Alone In The Dark, seeing this will make you think that it wasn't directed by Boll.
Best of the worst!
posted on 21 Jun 2009What the f**k... I think the plot was great and I've never heard of the director before but this is bad! The acting was so, so, so bad. In the boat when the "food guy" was falling off it was like: inside the boat, outside the boat, inside, outside, and so on. Then when Max grabbed Jack it was first outside the vest then inside and then outside again without changing positions... Grade 2 for acting and directing and 7 for the plot and the beautiful girl. Never played the game but I bet it's a lot better than this movie! Hope you won't dislike the comment but it's the truth. If you see any other bloopers please write them down so I can read them. Enjoy the movie! /J.V
Uwe Boll's abilities as a filmmaker ruin a script that should have been a good B scifi action horror film
posted on 13 Jun 2009Uwe Boll slips back in his film-making skills once again to offer up a scifi horror tale of mercenaries and reporters taking on super soldiers on a remote island. An okay cast headed by the excellent Udo Keir is cast adrift by Boll who makes the worst of script that should have worked. The mad scientist being investigated by a reporter has been done to death but this script is amusing enough that the plot should have worked, additionally the effects and super soldier design with their dead lifeless eyes have some degree of creepiness, however Boll somehow manages to film everything in an off handed way. Its as if he couldn't be bothered to actually figure out what would work and instead rattled off stock camera placements and walked away. Additionally the assembly of scenes has no spark or life, I'm guessing that Boll only shot one or two takes and just used what he had. It really stinks. Clearly Boll is in one of his periodic retrograde films where anything he's ever learned about film gets flushed. The last film he made that was this bad was Seed a serial killer movie that is one of the worst films I've ever seen. This isn't that bad, but it is close simply because it should have been better. Then again Udo Keir is good enough that he does make watching his scenes worth the effort and make this a an almost so bad its good film. I'd take a pass unless it's late at night and you're catching it on cable.
Better than bloodrayne at least
posted on 11 Jun 2009One of Bolls better attempts. Just shows that if you do something long enough you have to improve just by chance. It is still not good but it is at least watchable which is an improvement over the bloodrayne. The main difference between Bloodrayne and FarCry really is that the story from Farcry wasn't the games strong point whereas Bloodrayne had a strong story and thus Boll had more chance to mess it up.The action in this movie is actually fairly good. Occasionally a touch overdone but in a good way and worth a watch just for that.Acting wise it was pretty decent. Most of the actors are pretty good but you can tell they aren't taking it seriously based on comparisons with other performances. But the lighter mood this gives to the film actually helps. While I think sticking a little bit closer to the story of the game might have made for a slightly better film the changes made are pretty practical and not big enough to make a difference. Especially given the plot of the game was hardly Oscar winning just a vehicle for FPS carnage. Would have liked it set in the Jungle as that was a pretty integral part of the game but Canada doesn't have a great deal of Jungle and it is at least set in a kind of rainforest. Why Boll feels the need to change already professionally scripted and directed game plots I don't know but he does. And until he starts letting the source material speak through his adaptations will always be lacking. Watch the film for a laugh its good for that and maybe for watching during a party as drinking party fodder.
Left Wanting More
posted on 05 Jun 2009Far Cry is my favorite PC Game, so you can imagine my delight when i saw it as a movie at the video store. The storyline has all the elements for a great movie: an Island, a crazy scientist genetically modifying soldiers, mercenaries, a retired Special Forces Officer and the girl to rescue. For me there were two things missing from the movie: firstly girl power. In the PC game Valerie Constantine was a force to be reckoned with and sexy with it...up there with Lara Croft yet in this movie she's a bumbling newspaper reporter who can't even throw a grenade without taking the pin out. This is an injustice to the games character and actor Emmanuelle Vaugier was wasted as the female lead.Secondly the genetically modified soldiers were less than convincing (actors with body paint and contact lenses). This is understandable for a film with a low budget but some CGI was needed here. And what of the scary Trigens? Not part of this movie. The original game was huge (20 levels) and it was always going to be a case of what to leave out for the movie. The movie had some elements that were in the game: vehicles, weapons, boat chase, certain characters but i was left wanting more. The bantering between Val and Jack was one thing that was done quite well. Overall not bad but i was expecting a bigger movie and was disappointed. I thought director Uwe Boll did well in "In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale" but for this adaption of a video game it was average fare.
Bolls best movie, people hate him to be cool or something
posted on 26 May 2009I enjoyed this movie, it was fun and pretty well made. I think that people should watch this movie before rating it. There is no way it's a 3/10, seriously did you even enjoy the snore-fest of Oscar movies released recently? I have to try to stay awake watching movies like the Bicurious case of Benjamin Buttkisser, and don't even get me started on Not so Revolutionary Road. If you still enjoying watching movies that are fun, then you won't have a problem with this. It was made in Vancouver and I'm sure there was more than just one person working on this movie. If your head isn't up your butt then you will get over the fact that Boll was involved, you might even be surprised.
Disgrace to one of the greatest games produced so far
posted on 14 May 2009This was a disgrace to the game FarCry i had much expectations but all ended up in a nightmare. Besides the bad acting the visual effects, stunts the plot even the humor used in the movie was an absolute flop. The movie is not worth watching at all. The funniest part was when the girl comes and kiss Jack in order to give him the key to the cuffs. Guess the she got the keys to handcuffs all the time. I hope some good director will make a remake of this fantastic game into a movie someday. And I they will invest some good cash to get the visual effects right and the scenaries right as well as the ACTING right. But till then don't waste time by trying to watch this movie because it will surely make you go mad specially if you are a FarCry lover.
Far Cry - Not the Game, but a descent movie
posted on 22 Apr 2009O.K., here we go. First of all, I must say, I liked the game very well (I'm talking about the first game, the second installment is still on my to do list). So, I'm speaking of a first person shooter that really got me for days (yes, it took me a while, but I like to play a game on more difficult level). But this is about the movie.I've seen a lot of so called "video game adaptations". And I know that the name "Uwe Boll" makes a lot of people say: "Oh my God, not another movie by this guy". BUT: When I want to see a video game adaption, I always go to the movie with the lowest expectations. Like it was with "Far Cry". I thought, o.k., another movie about a video game I played, let's see what they made out of it. Well, I wasn't surprised, that the story deviated from the game, I wasn't surprised that they didn't have a lot of money for the special effects, but I saw the list of actors taking part in the movie, which was really surprising. For the movie, I must say, that it is a descent action movie and that it is - of course - on a low budget scale. That includes taking the setting away from a nice tropical environment and placing it into a more Canadian and cheaper setting. That also includes, that the storyline changed - who ever made a movie based on a first person shooter and based the story only on this person? - but in a reasonable scale. This also means, that some characters were invented (e.g. the big funny guy and the uncle, you will see, if you see the movie). What I liked about it was all about the game - they implemented the cars, the boat(s), the secret experiments stuff and the one guy that got there - uninvited. What I disliked about the movie: Well, it could have been a lot closer to the game. Why not making an opening according to the game? Let the one guy making the opening with his boat getting torn apart and leaving him in a situation, where he must find out for himself. Let him discover on his own, where he is and why all this sh** is going on around him.So, if you like cheap action movies - go for it! If you want a serious storyline with academy awards performances - avoid it. I liked the movie and I must admit, that although the storyline changed and it doesn't really feel like "Far Cry - the game", there was a lot of fun and action in it. Who else besides Uwe Boll dares to give us movies about our most favorite games?
The most bullied director ever delivers an enjoyable Movie
posted on 10 Apr 2009Bill Gates, Brad Pitt, Richard Branson, and so many other great people got bullied in their lives before they reached the ultimate success and respect by the general population. Uwe Boll is no difference. Even before anyone has seen his latest movies their IMDb Rating is at 1/10 with 1000 of Voters. They do not rate the film, they join the lemming army of weak people who enjoy to pick on a victim. It used to be the Nazis with the Jews, now its the film critics against Uwe Boll.So many standard Hollywood Movies are boring, even Quentin Tarantino can get boring but Uwe Boll always delivers something new, re-refreshing and interesting. His cynical and abstract jokes are not understood by everybody but thats why the more intelligent people love his movies and his Fanbase keeps growing (there isn't just the lemmings who rate all his movies 1/10 there is also a lot of people who rate them 10/10 and the number keeps growing). Now rate my review as not useful if you feel offended because you know I am right.
Good Movie
posted on 25 Mar 2009I just got done watching it and i give it a 6.5. It's not a great movie, but its worth watching! It is much better then most reviews on this board give it. The game never had a great storyline to begin with so i think the director did a good job with what he had to work with. I would have gave it a 7.5, but the handcuff scene was out of place. Stupid humor should not be in the middle of the action, but rather toward the beginning. If you have played Far cry, or like action films i see no reason why its not worth checking this movie out. Disregard some of the haters of the director. It's not a bad movie at all. I have seen much worse!
It wasn't terrible, certainly not a 3/10...
posted on 13 Mar 2009I am well aware of Uwe Boll's work, I am also aware that the people on this site are not fond of his work and mercilessly down-rate his productions. That said, I don't think this movie is worth only a 3 or 4 out of 10.The acting wasn't terrible, then again there wasn't much acting to begin with. The movie seemed like something out of the 1980's with its numerous action sequences, a lot of which involved boats, water and explosions. The movie's plot didn't exactly follow the game's, but it worked to some extent. Simply put, there is a crazy scientist genetically engineering soldiers to be super soldiers. One of the normal soldiers on the island decides to organize a meeting with his journalist niece on the island to expose the work and in the process gets caught. The niece hires Jack, a guy who runs his own tourist boat, to get to the island to meet her uncle. She gets caught, Jacks goes to save her and also gets caught. Blah blah blah blah, Jack and the niece escape and live happily ever after...oh and the scientist guy dies. You know, your standard Hollywood movie plot...there's a bad guy, the good guy infiltrates and gets caught, eventually escapes and in the process kills the bad guy and destroys his evil operation.Yeah, at times it drags, and yeah the guy who plays Jack isn't a native American which doesn't really work since the guy in the game comes off as your run-of-the-mill beer drinking American. The action sequences involve fake guns and props which appear to be just that...and yes, we can blame the director as he likes to rush his dreck movies into theaters which allows for little post production time...but the movie worked well. I put it on par with any other fairly rated action movies with similar plots that lack any sort of serious character development...Collateral Damage, Eraser, Escape from LA, Mission Impossible 2, Resident Evil movies, Tango & Cash, xXx, etc. In other words, if you are looking for just another run-of-the-mill action movie where the good guy wins, bad guy loses, and there is no character development, Far Cry is another movie to put on your NetFlix.
As an action movie, it performs outstandingly.
posted on 11 Mar 2009This movie is exactly what the far cry game basically was : 100 % non stop action. The plot is basic and just there to justify the action. If you just want to watch a action movie and be entertained, this is for you. Also there are some memorable funny performances by actors, as the movie is basically not serious at all. It is meant to be an over the top action movie. It will make you laugh and keep you entertained. There is a real fun but short chase scene between Jack and a mutant and just a bunch of those comedy-action scenes.Uwe really made THE movie about far cry. I played the game and this is exactly what the movie should have been. Sure its not in a desert island, but who cares ? And far cry was basically a basic plot as an excuse to shoot mutants.GOOD JOB BOLL !
Not that bad...
posted on 05 Mar 2009This movie wasn't bad at all. It contains some cheesy dialogs, Jacks English pronunciation was kinda funny. Also that evil woman-soldier acted and talked like terminator... with face without any expression.But... there were nice action scenes, nice explosions and fights. Really good-looking chase with altered super soldier in factory. It contained some parkour elements which seemed pretty refreshing to me.Movie doesn't look cheap and it surprised me, I was expecting total rubbish.Considering FarCry game, many elements in movie were taken from it. Humwees with machine-guns, boats with machine-guns... head-shots. But there were no white sand beach and location wasn't like jungle paradise (which could be seen in game). I haven't seen many movies based on computer games, but I think this one is quite good. Much better than TombRaider, which was trying to be very serious. This movie is light, but not much as Postal... which belongs to another category.

Tragic!
posted on 14 Aug 2009Man. I was so looking forward to this movie. Huge fan of the game. Still play it in fact. It's my go-to game when I get bored playing others. Far Cry the game has a lengthly shelf life and tremendous replay-ability value. Far Cry the movie is a horrible piece of tripe with no shelf life, zero replay-ability and no value whatsoever! These video game to film adaptations rarely rate above a 5 out of 10 stars or so, with the possible exception of the Resident Evil franchise and a few select others. But as if that wasn't a big enough hurdle already, this film has nothing to do with the game whatsoever except for the main characters names. Jack, Val, Krieger...but even their respective backgrounds are only loosely based on the characters from the game. Jack's a what? A German? Uh, you gotta be kidding me.And where are the Trigens? Those scary genetically altered whatevers will give you nightmares. Able to cleave your body in two in a second flat with their razor sharp claws from 50 feet away. And Crowe? Where's that prick Crowe, whose own henchmen despise him? He was such a big part of the game. The first of the "bosses", if you will, that you have to knock off.Anyone see Doyle? Where's Doyle? Just ridiculous. At least in Doom they shot that cool 5-10 minute bit like a FPS. As if you were really playing the game. Very cool and creative add-on to give the movie more flavor and as a party favor to true fans of the game. Far Cry the movie should have had something unique to the game in it, but... What a horrible, horrible letdown. So save your money. Scratch that, save your time. You can always earn more money, but you will never get back the hour and a half of your life that this film steals from you.
