One word: briliant. This is the funniest movie in the history of film making. It has a certain appeal to it, one which has me watching it over and over and over. But dont get caught up in trying to figure out what the movie is about....that is the biggest mistake made by the people who didnt like it. Why does a movie need a plot? IT DOESNT this movie is funny as hell and has quotes in it that will go down as some of the best ever....oH GeeZ DiD i JuST SaY THaT oR THiNK iT?? WaS i TaLKiNG?? DiD THeY HeaR Me??

Showcase: J. Depp

Hardly comprehensible in a day-by-day reality of even playful colourful Las Vegas, this movie is really stunning gem of J. Depp's range of characters.

Yes, it's odd, twisted and doesn't make much sense

That's sort of the point. Some of the negative reviews I've read appear to be by people that know nothing about Hunter S. Thompson. He really is like that. Johnny Depp did a fantastic job of portraying him, it's just that he IS pompous, insane, and all the rest. For those that aren't familar with the man, I can see how he would be unbelievable.

A very strange movie!

I have seen Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas twice now. It's one of those movies that are great to watch while stoned.I saw this film sober both times.I would say I enjoyed the film somewhat.I liked the soundtrack and some of the scenes were fairly entertaining, it also had some very funny moments and the acting is excellent especially from Johnny Depp. However there is not much of a plot in this almost two hour long film and I found it sort of dragged on at parts. The film is about a journalist and his attorney friend in the early 1970's who go to las Vegas for their own reasons, however most of the film involves them consuming various different drugs, hallucinating and destroying their hotel rooms.Depp's narration in this film was simply excellent! His voice is hilarious! Overall, Fear and Loathing was a fairly good movie but it was really strange and lacked plot and there are a lot of people who will not like it.

Nice visuals

This story has been described as an exploration of "the death of the most idealistic decade and generation." However, far from illuminating the likely fascinating question of why the idealism of the 1960s hit the "high water mark" and then receeded (as Thompson, ably acted by Depp, muses in one all-too-brief lucid moment), this story simply presents the story of two self centered idiots with an evident lack of concern for anyone besides themselves. Perhaps they are meant to embody the worst qualities of people, to show what brought down the 1960s idealism, but if so that was never conveyed by the story. To its credit, the visual style of the film is a nonstop head trip, which will remind pretty much everyone of their college days...and may make you wonder what was so special about Thompson's that it warranted a film. Was he only famous for being infamous? You'll have to actually read something by him to find out, because this film sure doesn't tell.

sometimes you shouldn't listen to critics

This movie was anticipated to be a discrace to HST's brilliant gonzo book. IT WASN"T. This movie followed the novel step by step very well and thrived with original directing. Being a very big fan of Hunter S. Thompson I was very pleased when I saw the film and let out a big sigh I had been holding in ever since I learned that Fear and Loathing was going to be made into a film. My thoughts were that they could never do it, a book as ingenius and twisted as that could never be made into a successful film. I was very wrong. I was blown away with the camera angles and affects. I didn't think they could make it happen but with the brilliant directing, it was almost as funny and twisted as the book. Oh yeah, one more thing, Jonny Depp did a brilliant job playing Raol Duke.

p.s. I wonder what Hunter thought?

A terrific vision about the 60's 70's and drugs

Absolut talent from Gilliam managing a incredible performance from Depp and Del Toro

you'll need some Tylenol after watching this movie.

If you're looking for a great way to get a headache, this is the movie for you. Remember that five minutes in the movie "Easy Rider" where they're tripping on acid? This is two hours of the same type of insanity. I'm not saying this was a bad movie, just bizarre, EXTREMELY bizarre, perhaps the MOST BIZARRE movie that I have ever seen! Yes, that even includes the movie "Brazil" (also directed by Gilliam). I liked parts of it, though. It has some very memorable quotes and superb, difficult acting by Johnny Depp. The movie is also packed with cameos (Cameron Diaz, Flea, Gary Busey, Christina Ricci, and others). However, the bottom line in judging this movie is, no matter how "artsy" and "symbolic" it is, was I truly entertained? I had to really force myself to sit through it. "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" is humorous and packed with symbolism, but it made my head spin and I found myself checking my watch every five or ten minutes. In this way, I would compare it to movies like "Trainspotting." And, just like "Trainspotting," I give it a five out of ten.

I've never seen anything quite like this

This movie made me laugh so hard I thought I was going to stop breathing. I mean, I always though ether was used for knocking out paitents going into surgery. What a trip, one constant stoned adventure scary at times. Make sure you take at least 10 hits off the bong before watching this one

this film idealizes nothing. the characters are confused, grotesque and completely incoherent... except for the subtle moments of brilliance uttered by R. Duke in profound moments of clarity. if that doesn't sound appealing to you, don't see this movie... you won't understand or enjoy it. in my opinion, it's worth seeing for Depp's performance alone.

"Disappointment and Loathing in Las Vegas"

I was first hipped to Hunter S. Thompson after reading an interview in a 1974 Playboy magazine, I was 18 at the time.

Despite thinking he might be insane (and thankfully he was, but in a good way)I was fasinated by his take on current events and the rich life he led. Since that day I have read everything he has ever written and have a library of all his works, "Fear and Loathing" being a favorite.

When I first found out that Fear and Loathing was being made into a movie I was thrilled, but did not get too excited having seen more than a few favorite books butchered in movie form. But after seeing who was involved in the making of the film I figured they couldn't lose....I was wrong.

It does not even come close to doing the book justice! If you have never read the book, or you were not alive during those crazy times you might enjoy this movie, but I recomend reading the book and skipping the flick. I have not seen the new version with commentary, and that part may be interesting, but despite whatever is said on this disc I know for a fact that Thompson was not pleased with the final product despite being a big Johnny Depp fan (as am I).

I do not fancy myself a literary critic, this is the first and probably last review I will write but I felt I had a realistic take on the author, the book, and the times. Plus I wished someone would have warned me,I might have saved the price of a ticket and the movie poster.

Exhausting

It's hard to tell if this film is about the effects of mescaline and LSD on the mind of the two main characters or is actually filmed while being on both drugs. At points, it's so frenetic that I was tired just sitting there watching it on my couch. But it's also much too interesting to look away. Nothing important is said by this manic slice of life, it's more like a melting piece of art on fire than a great narrative and it takes a while to wrap your head around the dialog. (almost like trying to understand a film spoken in a heavy accent). There's something infectious about it at the same time though. You might want to keep the kiddies away too.

good movie but it can be really boring!!!!!

I finally saw this movie after waiting like 2 weeks to have someone help buy it cause i'm not old enough. I put the movie on and start watching it and I figured maybe it'll get better when they go to Las Vegas but it really didn't accept for the really (trippy) parts when Depp starts to see all these lizards. Then it starts getting more interesting when Del toro is gone out of the picture cause he was so wasted that it got really annoying then boring when he's back then interesting again. It seems like Del toro kinda ruins the movie sometimes. Anyway the film basicly turns on and off but it's still really good I'd recommend to people who arrent a bunch of stiff's and freak out when they see drugs.6/10

Drug Crazed and In las vegas, could it get any better!?

. Depp does an excellent job at playing the great Thompson. I'm not big into drugs or things of that nature, but a big fan of Thompson, and this movie followed the book quite well. I think everyone should watch this movie, laugh and enjoy what is exactly going on. I'd have to say one of my favorite movies. Depp as i said before was awsome... the way his eyes and cig holder expressed emotion and what not, was intoxicating. Rent it and enjoy.

Breathtakingly Honest

To the typical viewer, this movie is just a wacky comedy with drugs, foul language, and Johnny Depp.

However, to the serious movie connoisseur, this is an amazing exploration of an era almost forgotten by society and time. The way it portrays two typical 70's hippies is perfect, right down to the copious amounts of drugs they use.

Johnny Depp also does a breathtaking performance as American journalist Hunter S. Thompson, perfecting the man's mannerisms and odd sense of style.

This is definitely one of the best adaptations of a novel to ever be made, and is worth watching if you want a hilarious and heartwarming story filled with great acting and stunning visual effects.

This IS the American Dream in action

While I certainly won't suggest that the movie is better than the book, kudos to Gilliam & crew for bringing Thompson's surreal imagery and complex tone to life. Casting was impeccable -- characters such as the hitchhiker bear an eerie resemblance to the Ralph Steadman illustrations made famous in the book. Depp turns overacting into an art form with his over-the-top portrayal of Thompson, and del Toro's performance as Dr. Gonzo is simply spectacular. The only problem with this movie is that it becomes readily apparent after about 60 minutes that the production ran short on money -- the effects in the first half of the movie (especially the hotel lobby and the cocktail bar) are top-notch, while the effects of the second half of the movie are not so spectacular (Gonzo's transformation during the adrenochrome trip, for example). Nonetheless, if you've read FLLV and are wondering just what Thompson was thinking, here is your chance to step inside the mind of an American icon.

ugh!

This movie made me extremely uneasy about the whole process of how a movie comes to be made in the first place. There is absolutely NO substance or recognizable direction to the so-called plot of this "film". This is like one of those tales told by a college buddy about a night's experience of too much drugs and/or booze - it goes on too long, it is embarrassing and uninteresting, and nobody cares about (or understands) what happened except those who were directly involved. The cinematography and direction tried to make this an artistically worthwhile endeavor, but fall WAY short. Not that either was a huge problem... there's just nothing to work with. Some have said that maybe I didn't understand the director's intent with this film. All I know is... The intent of ANY film should be a positive, stimulating experience meant to entertain the viewer by means of captivating live action along with coordinated artistic visual imagery. This waste-of-time drug fest accomplishes NOTHING.

A trip to remember

Awesome trip into the world of Dr. Gonzo and his assistant. Hilarious movie, but not for kids. My favorite part was the pathetic attempt to operate civilly while in the depths of ether.

Frustrating but entertaining and interesting

Terry Gilliam's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" has a lot of brilliant ideas, but they are usually developed poorly to the extent that they are easy to misinterpret and muddle. This doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it. In fact, I found it, at times, fascinating. Terry Gilliam crafts the story as one long acid trip with no story. This may sound annoying, but it really isn't. There is an unpredictable wonder about "Fear and Loathing" that makes it so winning. Johnny Depp gives an often hilarious performance as Raul Duke, an author who goes to Las Vegas only to be absorbed in every drug imaginable.
His "attourney", Dr. Gonzo (an interesting character who I have theories about), acts as a conscience of Duke. A conscience whose morals are cast aside due to drug usage. Based on the novel, "Fear and Loathing" gives an insight on culture in the 1960's, mostly commentary on an its odd society. Displayed are the Americans who abuse substance (Raul uses the American flag to absorb Ether for inhaling in one scene), the opposite-the ambicious who will always "win the race", the dehumanization in form of one taking advantage of another that took place in this era. After viewing this film, there is a lot to digest and plenty to discuss. This is one of the strongest things about the film, although it does cross my line of "too bizarre" in some scenes.

Awesome!

Johnny Depp, as always, does an amazing job portraying an addict journalist on a trip in Vegas to do a story on a race. Every other actor did a fine job and definitely added to the film. It's really hard to explain, you just hafta watch it for yourself and laugh your ass off. 10 out of 10
