Let the Feastivities begin!
posted on 24 Aug 2009After nearly having abandoned all hope to ever state it, the time is now finally here! Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome something entirely new and original: FEAST. This really great and immeasurably entertaining film directed by John Gulager exclusively thrives on one brilliant idea, namely it's the first and, so far, only anti-clichéd horror film of the post-2000 era. Simply put, this means "Feast" will feature guaranteed shock surprises and unexpected plot-twists. For once, you won't be able to guess which characters will get killed and in what order. Quite the contrary, I daresay that some of the characters of which you automatically expect them to survive will die and even a lot faster than you can imagine! The element of surprise in "Feast" is totally refreshing and the characters behave so damn realistic. They're cowardly, egocentric, traitorous, whiny, despicable and extremely obnoxious, but face it this is exactly how real people would react and behave in situations where their own precious lives are in danger. As fun as it usually is to witness the good guys surviving and the bad guys getting what they deserve, in reality all you need to survive a certain ordeal is a large dose of luck. Not only does director John Gulager dispose of the right attitude and approach to make a horror film, the basic concept of "Feast", as well as the elaboration of the script, is also quite creative and very comical. The film smoothly opens with the inventive introduction of the characters who're are all either regular guests or staff of a redneck tavern in the rural outback somewhere. The camera freeze-frames everyone to provide us with the characters' names as well as some fun trivia, like the life-expectancy for every single character. Literally immediately after the introductions still during, actually the dark tavern is viciously attacked by a 'family' of carnivorous creatures that vaguely look like hybrids between Razorbacks and Tremors. The awkward posse is trapped inside the tavern overnight, and they're forced to work together if at least some of them want to make it out alive. Granted, the plot is a little too skimpy for "Feast" to ever be referred to as a masterpiece in the genre, but it's full of action, incredibly fast-paced and bloody as hell! Several people loose either their heads or limbs, get eaten or blown to pieces following a counterattack plan gone wrong. The make-up effects are very professional, gross and thankfully achieved the old-fashioned non-CGI way. The dialogs are fluently written and often really funny and the entire cast delivers spirited acting performances. Quite a few familiar faces in the cast as well, like former soft-core queen Krista Allen, Duane Whitaker, Balthazar Getty, Jason "Jay" Mewes and TV-screen legend Clu Gulager, who's the director's father. Terrific B-movie splatter fun for over-enthusiast new horror fanatics as well as elderly & more experienced admirers of the genre.
the greatest
posted on 18 Aug 2009I cannot conceive how anyone that loves horror movies did not love this movie, seriously now, were the people that gave this movie a bad vote blind and if so how did you get on a comp to review a movie. this is hands down the GREATEST.... yeah thats right the GREATEST horror movie I have ever seen. It not only pushed the envelope, it ripped it a new one! I love how it profiled the characters, which i bet will be done in many many more movies to come. It introduced the characters and told a lot about them without wasting much time so that the movie could get on with the slaughter. The filmmakers did not have any regard for the same old formulas that Hollywood force feeds to the public. Which is a REALLY GOOD THING and very much needed thing in films today. Every horror movie I have watched since this doesn't even compare to this movie and I damn the makers of this film for that... but I must also applaud them for making such a great flick
Comparable with "From Dusk till Dawn" if not better...
posted on 18 Aug 2009This is my first comment on IMDb so I wanna start with a movies which isn't a so-so also not a hot shot. Feast fits the profile. It's definitely not a kick ass movie with a big budget, big names and flashy scenes like Alien vs Predator but as far as I known Feast surpasses other horror flicks say, 5 years to date. If you've loved " From dusk till dawn" then you'll absolutely love this one. Maybe some of you won't agree with me but the truth is not every horror movie must be another Alien, Psycho or Shining to be recognized. Characters ain't deep but they got some development and the best is you couldn't predict who'll live and who'll die. I like the humorous aspect, some line are very funny especially "character description". A fine good one. Cheers
Trapped in a bar, surrounded by monsters...
posted on 16 Aug 2009So I just watched this film, and it really didn't do it for me.The plot is pretty simple: There's a bunch of people trapped in a bar at night, when a couple of monsters appear and won't let them get away. There's a lot of gore, and shouting, and screaming, and sometimes even ridiculous (i.e. unintentionally funny) moments in this film, but if you're not into watching one and a half hours of killing but want a story to it then just move on to the next film. After reading positive reviews and hearing good things about this film, I had somewhat high expectations. My fault! Killing and screaming - that's all there is to it. No explanation whatsoever for ANYthing. e.g.: Where did they come from?...In fact, the characters are shallow and not convincing at all, there's no plot there apart from a big killing. The monsters rather look like the aliens in "Alien" the film. There were completely pointless sex scenes, and above all: pretty much every second of the film was predictable. On the upside: it was entertaining... even though only for about 20 minutes. And it was gory, involving a lot of blood and ripped bodies (like in most horror films?).My opinion: save your money and time. There's plenty of really good horror films out there... but this one is not one of them.
Gastronomique
posted on 29 Jul 2009I will admit it I thought that I would end up switching it off after a few minutes. I was so totally wrong. The movie set the scene from the first moment and I loved the stop film descriptions of the characters. Our Hero's (grins)The black comedic moments prevented the gore from grossing me out, and there was plenty of blood and body parts for the most jaded palate. Who would have thought that people locked in a tatty old tavern in the middle of nowhere, would give us such a roller-coaster ride. And they stopped only for breath. Henry Rollins, although not a fan, sends himself up admirably and he gave us a few of the lighter moments of the film. The guy that got covered in monster bile, poor thing, who spent the rest of the film in shock and decay, was another. The monsters, well no explanation but one could imagine them living somewhere out there in the middle of nowhere. What did they live on before and what will they live on now. There mating skills where beyond belief.... So watch it, even if you are a little squeamish. The ride will be worth it.
Excellent Gorefest, should have been released in theaters.
posted on 21 Jul 2009Superb gross out horror movie. Breaks the mold of most plots these days. Such as not too serious or trying to make some stupid point. From beginning to end it had me at the edge of my seat. I couldn't get enough. Feelings of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, feeling powerful one minute and powerless the next, being on top of your game and then being on bottom, having thought you'd seen it all, then realizing you'd seen nothing. And then for one individual being at the bottom of the barrel, then rising to the occasion and kicking butt. The only possible flaw would be, the lack of any nudity at all. I actually had seen project green light and have been patiently waiting for Feast's release. Disappointed I was not.
better than you think
posted on 13 Jul 2009This movie is exactly what I thought it would be from watching project greenlight before I watched it. The script is horrible, full of clichés and uninspired dialog. Yet somehow that scary awesome Gulager guy managed to make much of the movie enjoyable. The frantic, fragmented way he cut the fight scenes had me cheering, and the shots he used when 'Heroin' died made me cry. The name things were pretty cool, too, especially when they fooled you; it added a level of confusion to our expectations, which we as jaded movie goers expect to be fulfilled without thinking. And the lighting on the stairs scene--it was like a film noir, the way it made everything feel darker and deeper. So go Gulager! I'd really like him to make another movie, but because feast made no money, he probably won't, and that's a shame. It's dimension's goddam fault for choosing this script.
Horrifyingly witty...
posted on 07 Jul 2009Wee! At last waiting for Balthazar Getty to come out for this film is an admiration for me, Feast is absolutely startling with all those blood specked walls, gruesome killer creatures, disgusting vomits and maggots, limb slashing, head smashing, gut plunging aahhh, this movie is an absolute shocker.Got to love it!, you would never even expect that a dim-witted jackass, a wheel-chaired nerdy and a futile mom would lead the scene (How excruciating for Eric Dane's short appearance after the monster hacked his head of after saying the quotes "I'm the guy that's gonna save your ass").Though my comment for this movie is its over shabby and clumsy camera projections that I could not even get the real depiction of monsters and killing scene it quite make my eyes ache, but never mind this movie is worth..
DAMn! what a funny movie! but they push it to far
posted on 05 Jul 2009this is one of the best horror/comedy movies i have seen! i know u are sceptical, i mean, look at the cover and the story is the weakest i have ever seen, monsters just suddenly appearing from nowhere to a bar, wow, thats stupid. But anyway, the smart comments and the hilarious actions the character does, makes up for it. I mean like this comment "its a monster cock stuck in the door!" hahha. the characters was not so stupid in this movie as they usually are.the only thing that sux about this movie is that the creators took the whole monster sex thing to far. k the cock got stuck in the door, but when the monster wants to f**k the humans.. ehmm kinda nasty. still, the movie is great, lots of action, lots of killing and a lot of funny scenes. Believe me, RENT IT!
Worst horror film in years.
posted on 27 Jun 2009So ignorant it could be true if it wasn't so stupid. Pumping baby beasts, sick and a waste of time and brain power. Actors were needing a payday so the producers must have felt sorry for them. Film had no plot just gorry action that was at a D level. Executive Producers must not have anything else to do than this. Where did they get the creatures from, the Bruce Willis movie about the future cab driver that used to be a soldier but now helps the savior of the world? To be a horror film of Wes Cravens this is awful. Where did his style go? His artist touch? Man I don't know how many things I can write bad about this film just to get 10 lines . Well ONE MORE TIME, this film is awful, gross and substandard.
I knew it, I knew this movie would have some kind of undeserved 6.5 rating
posted on 27 Jun 2009It's really scary, because I was watching Feast and wasn't really enjoying it, but then I thought when I was going to comment on it that it'd probably have a 6.5 rating for those "cult lovers". Somewhere down the road I thought maybe I could see this movie getting more appreciated, but right now I wasn't too into it. I saw this movie getting advertised on the Sci-fi channel and a critic was just raving about it and how scary it was. So, even though I never heard of it, I decided to rent it.It's about these strangers in a bar who are just frankly, are a bunch of jerks, and when two people come into the bar bloodied up and say that there are aliens attacking them, the creatures decide to attack the whole bar. They have to band together and figure out a way to defeat the aliens and get out of the bar alive, but it'll be hard since the aliens keep reproducing babies.Sometimes comedy and sometimes horror, two genres that need to be carefully put together, but it failed in my opinion. The only part that made me laugh hysterically was when the "actress" got in the truck and sped off, it was pretty funny. This movie kinda reminded me of "Dead Alive" which I also didn't enjoy, so I think that's why I didn't get into it. But to those others who did enjoy it, it's cool, I see this movie becoming a cult classic in the near future, but it didn't amuse me.4/10
Why can't more direct-to-video movies be this good?
posted on 27 Jun 2009It's no secret that the majority of direct-to-video movies are nothing but a waste of time and money. Many of them are horror films and I can't tell you how many times I rented one of these thinking I had picked up a hidden gem and hated myself after watching it. Movies like 'Dark Harvest,' 'Vampires vs. Zombies,' and the countless Ulli Lommel flicks are some of the worst offenders. But then there are those exceptions that every film fan hopes and dreams for. 'Feast,' the third Project Greenlight film just happens to be one of those.Pros: A solid cast. Great sense of humor, like those character intros. Looking for ample amounts of blood, gore, and carnage? Then you're watching the right movie. An impressive directorial debut for Gulager. Aside from a couple spots, the pace moves right along. Top notch special effects, especially for such a low budget effort. The monsters are some of the coolest and scariest in recent memory. Some unexpected shocks. A subtle, but decent score and a couple rockin' songs that play over the closing credits.Cons: Not too much we haven't seen before. At 81 minutes you'd think the pace wouldn't lag, but it does a couple times. The shaky camera thing gets old after a while.Final thoughts: In a time of remakes and watered down horror like 'Boogeyman' and 'The Messengers,' this tasty morsel is like a breath of fresh air. Sure it might not be original, but unlike those other films it really feels like a labor of love. It feels like it was tailor-made for us horror aficionados. My rating: 4/5
Welcome to the blood and gore café.................
posted on 21 Jun 2009Can someone please tell me what the "heck" this movie is about? I am a HUGE blood and gore fan but this was thoroughly a disappointment. It had no "real" plot....no story line.........it wasn't even worth the DVD rental of $4.00! HUGE, HUGE disappointment. I noticed that it had some "names" associated with it like Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Did these guys even bother to read the script? and if they did...they should have just taken the money they invested in this and burned it....at least they would have gotten more from it. I definitely would not recommend this movie to anyone! In fact it was so bad I actually took it back to my video rental place and requested my money back. Horror fans...stay far away from this one. It's just a waste of time.
Cynical, funny, witty, gory, but not much scary
posted on 09 Jun 2009It's not a big deal being cynical nowadays. There are plenty of funny stuff on TV, and as for gore... you know better. The trick is in making it work all at once. The Feast does.It starts ripping off cynically and witty all horror clichés in the first 10 minutes so it leaves you guessing on what happens during next 1 hour given that everything you could imagine had already happened. Most of the flicks would deflate at this point, but the Feast will ride till the last frame and even some more.Didn't see for a long a movie so rich in ideas that it didn't need much any plot, meeting ends, and stuff. So don't even bother with getting a clue where did those monsters come from, just relax. If written above hurts your aesthetically please kindly stop reading here and avoid The Feast. Thanks in advance.Surprisingly, apart from showing blonde's way of loading gun, there was also some psychology in theatrical meaning, even some satire on corporate management. Well, together with some genital level humor, although thanks it didn't concentrate on it.To complain, the only thing they didn't find a place was horror. It's not scary, only spooky at times. Man, if after doing all the above they could also build up a serious tension and scare, they would have get a bunch of Oscars instantly. As a matter of fact they didn't.Hint: If you like this one (given that you're still reading I'm pretty sure you will) check also the Severance, an English cocktail of scares and wit.
Wow
posted on 24 May 2009I just saw this at the first annual Fantastic Fest Film Festival in Austin, Texas and I liked it so much I felt compelled to write a review of it.This is simply one of the best horror movies I have ever seen. I don't know much about film distribution, but it amazes and saddens me that this isn't in wide release ranking somewhere in the top 10 current films. Horror movies usually don't scare me, but this one genuinely did. It was also really funny, and the way the movie plays with character stereotypes had me guessing as to which character was going to get it next. There were moments when I was seriously shocked by the blatant violation of standard horror conventions. It takes real talent to play with clichés so effectively. Don't make the mistake of thinking this is a straight to video deal either, this is a well crafted and filmed movie. If you like genre films like Evil Dead, Tremors, or just like horror in general, you HAVE to check this one out, if you get a chance. Unfortunately, you may have to wait for DVD.
great characters
posted on 18 May 2009well i really loved this movie, not till the special features did i realize that this was a low budget 1 million dollar movie, it sure don't look like it,, i like the enclosed feeling of the movie, the patrons of the bar getting attacked by creatures. the fact that they have all of those comical intros, like honey pie, and hero, that was cool, hey there's even a small little sex scene, that was cute . lot's of humor in this one,, including the beer guy getting slimed not once , but twice, buckets, and buckets of blood, neat creatures.. somehow i think that this resembles so of the tremors movies of the past, but the creatures are totally different in this one,, in fact they really don't even explain where the creatures come from or how they evolve. just the same premise i guess. overall this movie does rock, kicks butt, all in all really a joy to watch for the horror fan, i hope they actually make a feast 2
Krista Allen really is an excellent actor.
posted on 14 May 2009A rollicking good time is had by all in the making of this movie, it must have because there is not a single weak link in the cast. Its a gory howling wallow in extreme nastiness, exciting, thrilling and tight as a drum. The humour in some of the situations is well written and the cast misses no single opportunity to make the most of it. Apart from Clu Gulager, I had not heard of any cast member before and was most impressed with the brave and determined performance by Krista Allen who turns out to be the lead and well cast she is. After watching this movie I looked up her filmography and was a little surprised to see so much TV and Emanuelle work in her resume. She is seriously gifted.
Instant Cult Classic
posted on 14 May 2009We took a chance and bought Feast on DVD, but from the positive talk surrounding this movie, we decided to give it a try. We were not disappointed. Feast is filled with blood, gore, action, scares, and laughs. It is a great blend of horror and comedy, where the dialogue is witty, and the actors are perfectly suited to the characters they play. There are some very funny quips from Balthazar Getty, which have become new catch phrases in our home; and Henry Rollins is very funny as a less than motivating, and somewhat dim-witted motivational speaker. Clu Gulager is great as the bartender. He has not lost his charm, and is as great in Feast, as he is in The Return of the Living Dead. The women in this flick kick some serious monster butt despite suffering some very serious setbacks. The fact that there are strong, beautiful women in this film who take care of business is made more prominent because of all the characters in the bar, it's the women (well, 2 of them anyway) who take charge when the monsters come knocking. The movie dispels lots of horror film clichés, which is refreshing, and a credit to John Gulager's fine instincts as a first time director. Gulager certainly has an eye for cinematic, visual storytelling, although there are no real "fancy" shots. For example, we don't see panoramic shots; rather our perspective is kept at a very controlled, tight perspective, which heightens your sense of being trapped. There are no computer generated special effects; rather, the special F/X are good ol' fashioned puppets, and gallons of fake blood. The lack of CGI is a definite plus as is the fast shutter speed, which makes the action and gory sequences eve more crisp and vivid. We didn't really watch Project Greenlight, just a few episodes now and then, so that is not what was really behind our initial interest in Feast: it was our curiosity regarding all of the talk surrounding this movie. The verdict? The positive talk is definitely well deserved.
Feastyness
posted on 12 May 2009Good wow I did not know what to expect.Man five minutes in and I was hooked.Of course I love horror movies. For the average movie buff that wants in depth plot and character detail this is not for you.In fact you might hate it.However if you like gore and people getting offed left and right then you found home. The movie always keeps you guessin who is next to die. Most basic horror movies your fed the whole crappy movie buy a spoon. You almost instantly know what characters wont live after there first screen appearance. In feast however this is not true granted there are some obvious characters that you know are monster fodder. The move is action packed and funny, women will jump and men will yell for more.Definitely worth checking out if you love horror flicks.

Project Redlight
posted on 26 Aug 2009Feast: 10 out of 10: Wow this is the way B-movie horror should be done. The fact it came out of that self important coming of age auteur factory Project Greenlight is even more of a miracle.First of all the movie has an undeniable cool factor about it. Henry Rollins as a second rate Tony Robbins, a Jason Mewes joke, and a truly funny self referential anyone can and will die at anytime vibe all in the first ten minutes sets the table for a cool fun ride. The movie involves people inside a bar and monsters outside trying to get in. Nothing more. It turns into a surprisingly action packed film for what is basically a one set Rio Bravo remake. Like Shaun of the Dead (Another better than anyone could of hoped horror comedy) the characters make the difference. There is plenty of cannon fodder (Introduced in an almost to long for its own good style of captions rating the various bar patrons survivability) and eye candy and best of all a surprising amount of x-rated violence. (There isn't a body fluid not featured in the movie. Finally an unrated cut that is truly unrated and not just an "R" with some deleted exposition scenes.)The movie wisely never explains what the monsters are or how they got there. It concentrates on the real time survival of the bar patrons. Did I mention that anyone can die at anytime? Even your best horror movie watching radar will be put to the test as you try to figure out who among the rabble are the prerequisite hero and heroine.Plenty of fun and action and style cover any of the rough spots. Simply a great B movie.
