Great teen horror
posted on 24 Aug 2009Ok the reasons I rented out this film was because I heard it was a good horror film and it had Seann William Scott who is one of my favourite actors.Alex falls asleep before a flight takes off to go to Paris. He has a nightmare about the plane exploding and when things happen when he wakes up that happened in the nightmare he wants to get off the plane but he starts a fight with Carter who thinks Alex is lying. Anyway when the fight happens 5 people are thrown off the plane. Alex's friend goes off to help Alex and a girl called Clear who also knows what's gonna happen goes off on her own free will. The plane crashes. Then Death keeps killing the survivors in order they would have died in the explosion. This could have been a comedy horror because it had comedy elements for example someone says "You may as well drop dead!" but they drop dead suddenly after. It has some of the best jump scares ever but I was hoping the Grim Reaper would take out a scythe to kill one of the survivors. He is death after all and the mortician mentioned him.Another thing though is that there isn't enough gore in this film. There is one gory(if even) death scene. Note down for sequel there must be more gore. There are characters you want to die that don't and people you want to survive that died in this film. Note again for sequel let likeable people survive and unlikeable people to be slaughtered. It had a great ending. The inevitable sequel comes out it should start the second the first one ended.A good teen horror. 9 outta 10.

posted on 24 Aug 2009Around the time of Final Destinations production, teen slasher films were very popular. The film was made to capitalize on that fleeting market, but I've have to give recognition to the writers and director for trying something a little bit different, at least for the time period in which it was made. James Wong did a good job directing. His style is far from innovative, but it provides the film with a nice tone. The screenplay could have went better. Though better than an average example, FD still suffers from lack of character developement and some mediocre dialogue. There are far worse examples in the genre, though. The acting was also good. Ali Larter was the only one I really didn't care for. She just seemed rather uninterested in what she was doing. There really wasn't that many parts I found to be particularly suspenseful or scary, though they will keep you from slipping off into boredom. The final 15 minutes or so was also rather dull. A good example of later teen horror films. There are evident negative elements, but there are some good ones too. If you don't take yourself too seriously, you should find it at least decent.6.5/10* * 1/2/ * * * *
it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be
posted on 22 Aug 2009Well, overall I liked it. The plane sequence was a little too realistic for me. I was sweating and squirming in my seat no matter how many times I told myself its just a movie. What I liked about it was that, while it was predictable, it was just as unpredictable. When something would occur that you might expect, something would happen right afterward that one would not expect. So, im my opinion that made up for it. I dunno, I kinda liked it.
The end was a little silly but I couldn't make one better so I'll deal with it.
There They Go, Here We Stay.
posted on 18 Aug 2009"Final Destination" starts off really well and right up and including the plane's err FINAL DESTINATION this film is really quite good! But it is quickly drawn into the cliches of a teen horror/thriller. I'm even sorry to say that I found some of the deaths almost amusing, is that sadistic or signs of a bad film???
Very Good Movie, lots of scares
posted on 25 Jul 2009I really enjoyed the movie. The only thing kind of upsetting about it was the fact that airplane blowing up was just a little to close to real life. Taking off from JFK to Paris. With a group of students from a high school. Just a little to close to being identical to the TWA Flight 800 Disaster. Very insensitive. Probably where the idea of the movie came from. They could have at least had it flying Boston to England or something. I normally don't bitch about these things. But come on guys, that was a little too similar. Still overall, I really enjoyed the movie and would highly recommend it :)
Accidental Surprise
posted on 25 Jul 2009I stumbled upon this movie recently when nothing else was on. Being an Ali Larter fan, I decided to try it out. It was amazing!! With such a young cast, I was worried about it becoming another teen slasher film, which it most certainly was not. What I liked best was the pace - not a second was wasted, from the film's first ten minutes until the shocking conclusion (just when you thought you were safe...) In fact, I appreciated the fact that - just when you thought you had been cheated - the ending comes about and turns your expectations upside down.
Thrilling cutaway shots throughout lead to suspense by hanging clues in front of us. And just when you think you've got it figured out, something else entirely happens... or does it? Great, GREAT movie. 8/10
Good movie all around
posted on 15 Jul 2009For most teen horror flicks, most focus on a tangible killer. This doesn't.Alex, played by Devon Sawa, and his French class are going to take a flight to Paris. While the plane is boarding, Alex doses off and has a premonition of the plane exploding. He wakes up to find that most of the premonition is true. So he causes a fuss and gets him, and about 6 other people kicked off the plane. Thus begining the killer, death itself, to claim the lives of the people who cheated him once. Now Alex has to figure out the pattern which Death is following and cheat it once again.Cast: Devon Sawa= Alex, Chad E. Donella= Todd, Ali Larter= Clear, Kerr Smith>Carter, and others.Good Points: Drifts away from most horror flicks where there is a human killer. People die different. The love story, if implied, does not take up much of the screen time ( original ending ). Good acting.Bad Points: The only real bad points i found were the alternate ending. What was that?!?! It was predictable, i'm glad they re-shot the ending. And the part where Alex is in Clear's cabin, that part confused me. what was up with eating what ever he was eating with the gloves?
GREAT SUSPENSE FILM
posted on 13 Jul 2009This is by far, the best horror/suspense film since Scream, even better. Never a dull moment, it leaves you wanting more and it never disappoints. This film makes you think, which makes it a great psychological thriller. All I can say is, if you have a fear of flying and you see this, you'll probably never overcome your fear. If you haven't seen this yet, by all means, rent it, or better yet...BUY IT!! My score: 10
unique,effective thriller
posted on 01 Jul 2009this is a pretty good entry in the thriller genre, with a twist.the killer in this one is unseen.death,to be exact.the unique premise in this one is that death has a design and is targeting a group of people according to that same design.sounds far fetched and way out there, right?well it is,and if you have trouble, suspending your disbelief, this is not your movie.many of the things that happen defy belief.but, get your head around that, and you have a thrilling, intense movie.it may be pretty gruesome for some people.it's also quite oppressive in feel.there is a definite pallor of doom hanging over it.overall,it's very effective.i enjoyed it a lot and highly recommend it to anyone who likes the thriller genre of movies.just remember to throw any semblance of realty out the window before watching.
Putrid Bile...
posted on 23 Jun 2009I hated this movie, I really did. I thought Prom Night and One Missed Call was bad. I was expecting a bad teenage "horror" movie, but what I got was worse; an atrocious abomination of cinema that doesn't even have it's cheap thrills. It's not a good thing when before anything happens in the movie you've predicted who's dying in which order, who survives by the end, and then you turn out to be correct. The dialogue is horrible, and the acting is mediocre (with the exception of Tony Todd). The first kid who died (which is almost always the one with the worse hair) got killed by slipping on his bathroom floor and getting strangled to death in his bathtub by a wire I'm not even sure where it came from. How is bathroom strangulation scary at all! This is the most predictable piece of crap I've seen since just about every Sci-Fi channel movie ever! The ways these kids die are so unrealistic, one of them dies from a flying piece of metal that got run over by a train and cut off half of is head...no.Avoid this pile of rotten clichés at all costs. i wouldn't torture my worst enemy with this...
101 ways to die.
posted on 19 Jun 2009I was very disappointed in this movie. It was just the same old teen horror flick recycled into something a bit different. I have to admit that the beginning of this movie is thrilling, but after this the movie becomes slow and has no point at all. The killings are bloody and often painful to watch(who really in their right mind wants to see some die, fake or not). If your really looking for a thrilling movie turn to something like "The Exorcist".
Lame and shallow
posted on 03 Jun 2009Really - this wasn´t much of a horror movie. Lame story, no characters. A lot of special effects - but with no meaning. I just got tired of it all and wished for death to do it´s jop properly. I mean if death was this messy doing it´s job everyday it´s a miracle that anyone dies at all....
...never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee
posted on 03 Jun 2009Final Destination is a weird concoction of horror, fantasy and maybe para-psychology. A young psychic throws a fit and is responsible for a number of his school chums and a teacher being off-loaded from a flight to Paris, which is pretty lucky because the plane explodes in mid air. Rather than being grateful for their salvation, his friends and their parents treat him as a freak and even the ubiquitous FBI are suspicious of his role in the air disaster. Not long after the various funerals for the fallen have taken place, the survivors begin meeting a sticky end one by one, and our psychic bright-spark figures via an utterly incomprehensible thought process that the Grim Reaper has been thwarted from achieving his daily quota and now wishes to balance the books before going on vacation(probably to Paris) by rendering all the survivors of the ill-fated flight deceased. Are you still with me? Our hero is a bit concerned because the girl he would most like to play doctors and nurses' with is on the death list as well. Can Death be cheated? Will our heroes survive? Is it all a figment of a film studio's imagination? Will anybody stay to the end of this frightful tosh? I did, but I wish I didn't. At least the Scream trilogy had a campy self-mocking tone, in spite of its obvious flaws. I'd love to have been a fly on the wall when the writers sat around smoking joints and thinking up this load of codswallop. The acting techniques of the marvellous young talent comprise long stares, grimaces and expressions of empty bewilderment. What a hoot! 2/10.
Silly - but with Style!
posted on 01 Jun 2009The strength of FINAL DESTINATION lies in its ability to keep audiences on (to use a cliche) the edge of their seats. Or rather, to convince audiences that something is about to happen, then do a complete turn-around and have something else inexplicably happen.WHAT AM I TALKING ABOUT?Well, for example the death scenes. A large build-up ensues, where the movie convinces the audience that a character is going to die in all sorts of horrible ways. Then an anticlimatical drop occurs. The audience sighs, the character will be ok they think. But then - WHAM! - the character is killed in a most unexpected way. This is the power of this movie. Otherwise, the acting isn't very good; the script unsurprising; and the direction often slack, surprisingly so for John Woo.As for the core of the movie, the characters are hastily sketched with no depth and the storyline is rather old-hat fare. There is no denying it, this is a very silly film - but it will have you hooked till the end. Also of note: FINAL DESTINATION is a slasher movie, and the first without an actual killer - death itself stalks the protaganists instead. Interesting too is the way the movie turns everyday objects and occurrences into lethal weapons, and sometimes in rather original ways. There are also some neat in-jokes throughout.Bottom-line: Silly but with style and an ability to grip even the most reluctant viewer.
Decent with an original premise.
posted on 28 May 2009Final Destination attempted something that few movies have. It tried to be different. And it succeeded. Though not the best thriller i have ever seen, it manages to pull off quite a far fetched premise with a great feel. This film is basically about a group of teens who cheat death by not getting on a plane that is sent into flames before it gets far. Then death is after them and they begin to come to horrible deaths to make up for them surviving. The special effects are great, and some pretty gruesome deaths. The whole point though is that Final Destination's originality keep it up and put it into a good category, it is no Reservoire Dogs or anything, but it does keep your attention.Basically you should see this one just to say you did.
A movie about the simple things in life... and death
posted on 28 May 2009The best horror films exploit simple fears, and since no sane person isn't at least a little bit afraid of flying, Final Destination chooses a brilliant catalyst for its mirth. But a set-up isn't enough to carry a film on its own, and the reason Final Destination works so well is that the film-makers don't rely on their fantastic concept to push the movie. In less-capable hands, this story would have been a rote 10 Little Indians kill cycle, but by integrating genuine suspense and boundless creativity into the proceedings, Final Destination falls somewhere much closer to the category of modern classic.Without recounting the plot, the core premise here is that no one can cheat death, and that by challenging fate, we oppose powers far beyond our control or understanding. The "survivors" who get off of doomed Flight 180 are perfect essays for the range of human reactions to the inevitability of death. Some leave the plane in a panic, like those among us who fear death to the extent that we let this fear lead us through our lives and out of situations that may contribute to whatever nasty end we imagine is in store for us. Much more interesting, the others who disembark the jet before its inevitable destruction are led away from their fate by simple twists of chance, each with a series of minor actions that test the fabric of fate just enough to forge their unnatural survival of an event they were destined to perish in.This complex but identifiable crux is why Final Destination is such a masterfully-rendered work of horror. We've all had those moments in our life where a seemingly random series of events culminates in a significant occurrence. It's quite natural to question what forces are at work in these instances, and how many variables were required to lead us to the conclusion we face.According to Final Destination, the force at work here is Death, itself. And this Death is a relentless shadow that uses pure elements like water and fire (again, simple fears) to create extravagant macabre Rube Goldberg devices to carry out its task. The way each individual piece of these machinations relates to something most of us would consider mundane (a leaky water line, a crack in a glass) heightens the powerful horror that permeates the film. After all, these victims aren't doing things we would never do and creating their demises by irresponsible actions; they are in situations that could actually happen to us, and the brilliantly slow and suspenseful set-ups that accompany each death force us to question: would WE notice the dripping water that eventually leads to our death? The scenes in the airport at the beginning of the film are particularly gripping. The dread is built though a series of subtle images that don't look at all out of place in the airport (the departure board, the words "final destination" on the ticket), yet something about them is askew (note that the number on the luggage cart that drives beneath the plane as the characters board is "666", for instance). This series of little coincidences are all things that many of us would never pay attention to, or even notice to begin with, but if we saw them all as our main character does, could we draw any other conclusion than the one he realizes?Of course, there is also a lot to be said for the gleefully orchestrated carnage that keeps the pulse of the film steadily pumping. The plane crash is a truly shocking set-piece; chances are, no one reading this has been in one, but seeing it unfold on this screen, we get the sense that not only could the film-makers' scenario happen, it would probably happen EXACTLY like we see it here.Even knowing what's coming doesn't prepare the viewer for some of the more carefully-plotted "gotcha" moments. (If you aren't caught off guard by the bus hit, I'm guessing you have the same semi-psychic sense that drives our main character to get off the plane to begin with). By mixing in the right amount of carnage, and making it as over the top as the story allows, the film strikes a great balance between tension and release, a tenuous and not-often-realized phenomenon that classifies most of the best horror films of all time. This is not a perfect film, by any means. FD has flaws both minor (Clear Rivers is one of the worst film character names of all time) and major (the entire FBI subplot, and the wholly unrealistic actions of the two agents, which are in direct opposition to the "this could happen to you" element that makes the film so frightening). The film also takes a credibility leap when the characters start calmly discussing "finding the patterns" and "getting skipped" (would anyone in this situation really be able to understand and articulate the phenomenon they are experiencing?). But there's also lot to be said for making a good old-fashioned thriller, and since we know that's what we're in store for here, it's relatively easy to allow our analytical minds take a siesta and simply enjoy how well this entire concept is brought to, ahem, life."Simple". There's that word again. We keep coming back to it because the notion of simplicity is key to the film's successful delivery. If the main point of the story is that Death is coming, that's pretty simple, and still effective. However, the interlace of actions and reactions that construct each kill, and indeed the entire notion of Death searching for those who escaped it, is anything but simple. So, this entity seems simple on the surface, but is in fact a more intricately constructed web than we could possibly imagine. Such is life, and such is Final Destination.
I love this movie
posted on 26 May 2009This was a pretty good flick. It's different than todays horror flicks. It doesn't involve a psycho killer, but instead the Grim Reaper. This movie kept me in suspense the whole movie. I think this movie deserves a lot of praise, because it's original. Not too many movies out there involves the the Grim Reaper like that. The plot and acting was excellent. I recommend this movie to anyone who likes a good horror movie that will keep you in suspense.
Final Destination gets the job done almost perfectly, and will surely be remembered as a horror classic.
posted on 18 May 2009This thrilling horror movie brought something new to the horror genre, and spawned 2 sequels and possibly another in the future. It isn't your typical flesh and blood killer like in most slasher movies. The killer is death itself, and no human force is involved. This may not necessarily be scary, but it sure as hell is fun to watch and has a great, original storyline. In other words, it's original. Now, the acting is pretty typical for this kind of teen slasher movies. Some acting is a little mediocre and corny, but it gets the job done. It's actually above average for some characters, like Ali Larter for example. Some of the characters, like Larter's, Sawa's, and Cloke's are meant to be likable and are, while others aren't, like Smith's. The cocky jock and his hot girlfriend are in this (what slasher movie would be complete without it?), of course, and as usual, no one in the audience likes them, but that's what it's supposed to be like in some cases. The acting here is good, especially for horror. Now, the dialogue and script are excellent, and the plot is absolutely perfect, as I've said before. The characters all deliver their lines well.Overall, this movie delivers what you would expect plus more, and is definitely recommended by me.9.5/10
It works so why bother
posted on 16 May 2009'Final Destination' does not make any sense. The movie is not meant to be to make any sense so why would we bother that. It is supposed to be scary and it really is scary, sometimes. Although things are silly it is kind of original as well. A couple of people escape death because one of them had a vision. Because they messed up the plan death had for them death comes up with a new plan to kill the survivors. One by one they die but one of them, Alex (Devon Sawa), sees the design, the path that death follows. Together with the last survivors they are going to cheat death. One of them, Clear Rivers (Ali Larter), feels what Alex sees. You understand things don't have to make sense here. Right before the first time the group survives we see the vision Alex has. It is more than scary. After that things are a little the same but there are some nice ways to make a death scary. Like the sequel it is stupid but it works.

Bus scene
posted on 30 Aug 2009The bus scene makes watching this movie worth your while. It's about 1.5 seconds long. Nothing much else to say about the movie. It's just another teen horror without much play on the supernatural. Some of the scenes are actually very well acted.
