Great Story!

posted on 30 Aug 2009

Being from San Antonio, I was super psyched when I read they were making movie about the haunted train tracks here in Texas. I was finally able to see Fingerprints and I'm happy to say they did a good job.I was not sure what all they would do with the urban legend of the kids and the school bus, but overall I think this was a pretty great story. I don't want to give anything away, but the ghost kids were spooky and I thought the death scenes were a lot of fun.Leah Pipes was really good and it was a pleasant surprise seeing Lou Diamond Philips.

I tried but couldn't like this...I just didn't care.

I always try to support or fight for low budget or independent film and from what I understand this is a low budget one, and for that it should be commended. To be fair it's not overly obvious that money was tight. However that's not the reason I didn't like this film. The plot in a nutshell is troubled teenager fresh out of rehab rejoins family in a new town. Cue an urban legend about a school bus stopping on the railroad tracks and a train smashing into it and killing all involved. Legend has it that if you put your car in neutral on the tracks the ghosts of the dead children will move your car off leaving behind fingerprints that you can see if you cover your car with talc beforehand.......yawn! Then there's a twist that's so blatant you want to shout at the scriptwriter, and a dark figure killing people all of a sudden. So there's nothing original in the story, it's cliché ridden, but acted okay...so far so average. The problem I had with the film was there wasn't a nice person in it, I couldn't have cared less about any of them including the heroine. I found myself refusing to give up on the film in case some good came of it, but desperately clock watching and wishing it would finish. It drags, it treats you like you're stupid, and you want them all to die.I wouldn't recommend it but it's not bad enough to say avoid like the plague.

Filmed in Texas & Oklahoma based on a Texas Legend

Someone commented on this being an urban legend from somewhere other than Texas. This is a good movie based on the urban legend of a little town in Texas. Where in fact in 1957 a school bus load of children were in fact killed in a train accident when the railroad crossing signs failed to opperate. All the children were killed. The film centers on a fictional Texas town of Emerald. However the real legend comes from a small town near San Antonio Texas. The Film was filmed in Oklahoma City & Gutherie as well as Texas. The high school scenes were in the historic Harding High School building in Oklahoma City. The Scenes of the older homes were filmed in the Heritage Hills neighborhood of Oklahoma City

This was a winner at the New York City Horror Film festival. The opening minute are so horrible that I had my mouth wide open as I realized along with the horrified townspeople what was going to happen.Fast forward 50 years into the future and there is an urban legend that, if you stop your car on the train tracks, the ghosts of dead children who got splattered there, will push your car off and leave their fingerprints.Melanie (Leah Pipes) is fresh out of drug rehab, and she sees a girl (Sydnee Harlan) on the tracks when some teens test the legend. Of course, no one believes her.She sees bloody messages, and more apparitions. Maybe there is some mystery, but it seemed like a simple accident. But, then things are not always what they seem. Even Geoffrey Lewis doesn't know the whole story. Is the sister (Oscar-nominee Sally Kirkland) of one of the dead children involved? There is a slasher aspect to the second half of the film. Mitch (Andrew Lawrence) and Carolyn (Ashley Wyatt) are the first victims; then Doug (Lou Diamond Phillips), while Crystal (Kristin Cavallari) gets the shock of her life.Melanie solves the mystery, but still has to go home to her horrid mother.

Good Flick

I really liked this movie. Mostly because I'm familiar with the urban legend. As all urban legends the same story seems to have happened in different places. Here in Long Island the same urban legend exists at a place called Mount Misery (which is not longer a railroad track but an underpass to a highway). Having experienced this legend myself at Mount Misery (came to a complete stop, put my car in neutral and was pushed up hill until I was clear of where the tracks used to be). I wonder if the neutral experiment works at the tracks in San Antonio as well.Anyway, I liked the movie, thought is was consistent all the way through. There are some holes, but hey it's a horror flick not a documentary.

Waste of Time

I don't suggest watching this movie even when you have much time to kill. It's full of clichés, its plot is beyond predictable and there are major logical flaws. The killing scenes are stupid and funny. The sexy actors and sexual material don't help much. The abusive mother, goofy, affectionate father, the hot sister and the problematic daughter constitute the family. Then there is the friendly teacher, the abusive- psychopathic guy who happens to be very handsome, the good and handsome boyfriend-to-be and the silly and slutty cheerleaders. So there's everything needed to constitute the teen-slasher scary movie, but it just doesn't happen. I advise you to sit and watch The Urban Legends again, rather than watching Fingerprints. The only thing i liked about the movie was Leah Pipes, whose performance was worth much superior movies.

ruined by bad SFX

posted on 21 Nov 2008

Horror movies shot on video were once a genre for the scrappy independents. I now believe that part of horror history to be over. This was not shot like a horror film. It uses shaky camera motions and cutaways instead of real technique or any inspired moves. The fast motion shots are very obviously sped-up footage. The lighting does nothing but expose the flaws of the production. They look wacky and gimmicky. The horror SFX are lacking in believability. The good performances and a good script were wasted. I looked up the production company so I would be sure not to watch any more of their films. The Movie Channel should have found a find better cheaply-made horror film than "Fingerprints."

Promising Story, Terrible and Messy Resolution

posted on 17 Nov 2008

The teenager Melanie (Leah Pipes) arrives in Emerald after a period of rehabilitation on drugs. When she lived in California, she had an overdose of heroin with her boyfriend that died, but she was resurrected by the paramedics. Mel is welcomed by her older sister Crystal (Kristin Cavallari) that tells her about an accident between a school bus and a train in 1957 due to a problem in a railroad crossing gate where all the children died. In the present days, there is an urban legend telling that if you put the car in neutral in the same place, the children will push the car and their fingerprints will be printed in the car bumper. Melanie has a cold reception from her mother, and later Crystal invites her to go to a party. When they leave the party with two friends of Crystal, they drive to the spot where the accident happened and Melanie sees a little girl. Later Mel befriends her and finds that her name is Julie (Sydnee Harlan). When Melanie has visions and daydreams with the children and the accident, her mother believes she is on drugs while Melanie tries to discover the truth about the fatal accident."Fingerprints" has a promising beginning with a plot with huge potential and scenes that startle. However, the terrible and messy resolution of the mystery is frustrating, with many holes. The heroine, her sister and her boyfriend are nice and empathic characters; however the rest are totally unpleasant or uninteresting. What has triggered the insane killer after many years? How the killer has selected the victims? The attitudes of Melanie's abusive mother are not normal and irritate. What has happened to Penn's car that was parked side by side with Melanie's car when they arrive in the train station? The last scene with the police cars arriving is absurdly ridiculous and senseless since nobody called the police. My vote is six.Title (Brazil): "Almas Condenadas" ("Condemned Souls")

I agree with the other reviewers on here- not terrible, and it started OFF strong, but fizzled and became extremely sloppy.I have mainly questions, which addresses said sloppiness, rather than a re-hash of the plot you can already find here: 1.) If indeed the kids were killed by the conductor, why would they push cars to safety? They weren't actually hit by a train, and when they were abducted, they were in a stopped and safe position by the tracks.2.) I actually suspected Penn of being the killer for a while- so right away, I didn't question why/how he was at the Depot- then after he was killed, I now wonder how/why he was there.3.) How did the cops know she was in the cemetery? Also, when did Melanie find out that there were none of the other kids buried there? 4.) The Mayor- this is sort of silly- but the guy would have been at LEAST in his 80's- he looked to be maybe in his early 70's...was this just an attempt to get a semi-known actor (Geoffrey Lewis, actually 73) in the movie? Just a few things wrong- otherwise it got kind of boring. But at least they tried to make something original.

Fingerprints - Great flick!

Hey mindcat what's your problem? Get off your ass and make a movie. Fingerprints was very well written, and how can you say the acting was bad with the likes of Lou Diamond Phillips and Geoffrey Lewis, two very established actors who have combined put out great performances for years. For a film that was completed under a $1 million dollar budget, there's no surprise that it won Best Feature at the New York City Horror Film Festival, after you've seen it. Fingerprints is also set to air on Cinemax during the month of May. Cinemax isn't going to play the film you described mindcat. Hats off to the whole Fingerprints team! Keep on making interesting flicks for us all to enjoy!

What a treat...this one has it all! A good mystery, a great ghost story, a taste of the slasher genre, some deadpan humor....throw it all together and you get a cross between "Scream" and "Ghost Story"...a nice throwback to the '70s and '80s classic horror genre. I enjoyed every single minute of this roller coaster ride. Good film quality, nice camera work, remarkable special effects for the budget, decent acting...and even Lou Diamond Phillips. What more can you ask for? Too bad mom didn't get "offed", though...her Mommie Dearest personality certainly warranted it. Great effort on the part of the director and cast. I give it 8 stars.

Interesting and entertaining film

"Fingerprints" is one of the best ghost/slashers around and is immensely enjoyable.**SPOILERS**Returning home from rehab, Melanie, (Leah Pipes) finds her sister Crystal, (Kristin Cavallari) is the only one on her side, as their parents are upset over her situation. When she takes her to a party with friends Penn, (Josh Henderson) and Mitch, (Andrew Lawrence) they tell her about a local legend in town involving a bus of children at a railroad crossing years ago, and immediately begins thinking that the stories are true. When a series of accidents in town has he convinced even more about the stories, she soon learns the horrifying truth about the incident that was covered up years ago, and sets out to prove it correct to the doubting family and unsuspecting towns-members.The Good News: This had a whole lot of stuff worthwhile to like about it. One of the best features is that there's an incredibly strong story to it, one that feels unique and creative while also being able to deliver the framework for a great horror story. The back-story involving the haunted crossing is great, just the sort of thing you would find in a small town like that, and the way it's ingrained into the film is perfectly handled, from the growth of the myth to the different scenes where it's put into practice, are just a lot of fun and really well-done. When it's done to be a part of the film, such as the first two hauntings, it's just absolutely brilliant and creates an incredibly eerie atmosphere. The first one, where the friends stop to test it while an oncoming train approaches with them all frantically yelling to move and the ghosts appear to move it at the last second, is frankly one of the single best scenes in the film. The second one, where the technique is tried by a skeptic and transformed into a believer, is great due to the appearance of the ghostly hands appearing on the windshield due to the dew from the environment is a great tactic that makes it creepy and chilling than it would've otherwise. Later ghostly visions, including the spectacular freak-out in her bedroom when the ghost first appears in the mirror and then beckons for help, then showcasing a series of gruesome images to her, from the hardly distinguishable to scenes of a mouth being sewn shut and decomposing body parts crawling with bugs and maggots, as well as other frightening images that are done in just a few seconds time, allowing for a genuine freak-out that propels the story along even more, making for an absolute blast of a scene. That there's another one done somewhat later, still within the realms of plausibility in the film but done so as to urge along for more investigation following a string of dead-ends through the exact same tactics as before, with the sewn-shut mouth and maggot-covered body parts are just as effective as now, they're shown as to be allowed a clearer vision and just makes them all the freakier. Aside from the creepiness, there's also a somewhat fun and enjoyable action-packed finale that has a lot going for it. With the appearance of a spectacular-looking killer, an incredibly decrepit and worn-down looking basement that makes for a great setting for the action, and plenty of back-and-forth stalking on both ends are all wrapped up into a fantastic set-piece that is just really awesome. Mixed well with the brutality in the wounds and the dirty, disgusting look of the place, there is really nothing wrong with this sequence. The last plus here is the incredibly high blood-and-gore quotient, which is nice to have. There's a multitude of impalings with a metal pole, a razor blade slicing up an ankle, one is visibly shown to have their mouth sewn shut, one has impaled horizontally through the neck and another is run over by a train, among others in here, making this one quite messy at times when it wanted to. These here are the good parts to it.The Bad News: There wasn't a whole lot to this one that didn't work at all. In fact, the main problem to be had with this one was the frankly unbelievable family life that's portrayed here. From the very start, it's hard to believe that a family life would be in this light. Instead of being welcoming and trying to help their daughter get past it, having them constantly bellow at her for slight transgressions isn't that believable in a family, and nothing at all is given as to why they act like that. It gives off the feel of just being included to add more drama to the film, but it doesn't work that way at all and instead becomes irritating at times. Some of the early scenes don't make any sense either, such as the trip to the party despite being out of rehab less than a week, and the scenes showing them at school don't really serve much purpose, but still, the family life is the big one here that holds it down. The Final Verdict: With a lot to love about this one and a minor flaw to hold it down, this is one of the best entries out there in the genre. Really give this one a shot if you're into the killer ghost films or more modern-day slashers, or just the plain interested, while those who aren't fans of the style should heed caution.Rated R: Graphic Violence, Nudity, some Language, an unsuccessful rape attempt and underage drinking

About the Parent's Guide for this movie . . .

posted on 07 May 2008

As a parent, I checked out the existing "Parent's Guide" for this movie today (after watching FINGERPRINTS once all the way through). The one sentence in the guide about violence\gore mentioned some impalings, and that was about it. After viewing quite a few parent guides for horror movies at this site, it seems that many of the contributors are either lazy or afraid of including "spoilers" (or both). Well, by its very nature, a parents guide should be composed entirely of "spoilers." (I just read IMDb's 13-point agreement for peer-editing the parent's guides, and it does NOT prohibit spoilers.) Now, most horror movie fans will not rule out a movie if it has "impalings." On the other hand, some will nix a flick if they know there's graphic violence against preteens. My own sister watches horror movies--maybe even those with graphic violence against preteens--but I know FINGERPRINTS has a specific violent act repeated twice--once WITH a preteen--which violates one of her "nails-on-a-chalkboard"-type taboos. So, if you are curious to find out exactly WHAT this act is, read the appropriate section of the parent's guide for this movie (which I clarified). And if YOU edit an IMDb parent guide yourself, do us all a favor: please be detailed AND comprehensive. (Since 90 per cent of the horror movies from the last 40 years are "gory," saying a horror movie "has many gory scenes" under the "Violence & Gore" section is not only redundant, but not very helpful!)

Ghost story crossed with a slasher film

posted on 29 Apr 2008

Lou D. Phillip stars as a teacher who lives in a small town haunted by the memory of the sudden loss of a busload of children years before. A young woman (Leah Pipes) returns from rehab to her family home, only to encounter the ghost of a little girl who slowly leads her to the lost children and the reason for their disappearance. That part of the movie is OK, and follows modern ghost movie traditions. But some bright bulb apparently decided to also make this a slasher film, with big boobs on display and lots of blood-letting for the JASON and FREDDY crowd. Th slasher segments all tie into the missing children plot, but they were absolutely unnecessary and damn near ruined the movie. We know who the masked killer is way too early, too. Ignore the cheesy slasher scenes, some of which look like they were filmed and inserted as an afterthought, and focus on the ghost plot. You will be rewarded. The ending is a dilly.

not often are low budget horror films good

But i found this to be very interesting. i mean you may have a few bad actors but the good ones make up for it in the movies like these. were the story is more profound and unique then the high budget films that use a franchise name to install 2 crappy sequels to a one good film like we have witnessed many a time. this at least uses originality, wit, cleaver story telling and is unique to the clicky genre! this is why i watch low budget films all the time, its times when i find a gem like this that makes my low budget scavenging pays off.great story, hope to see more from some of these people that took part in this feature!

The plot of movie Haunted railroad tracks lead a troubled teenager to discover the horrifying truth hidden in a small Texas townThis movies open with number of kids singing a song on the bus, there dads and mums are waiting for them and then the Parents notice train track are not working anymore, while there is train is on it way, Lady who driving then bus, couldn't see the parents telling her to stop as it was pouring down with rain, then train hit the bus killing everyone in there. Then the movie move on to Mel who is being told the story by her sister crystal tell her that if you park your car in the same place where it happened in neutral the ghost of children will move the car off the train track into safety. Later that night in party, Mel set of off with her best Friends, and her ass-hole boyfriends, who end up on train tracks were the kids were killed, (This scene just liked the one in Final Destination where carter doesn't move the car) But in this movie he dose move the car in time, as Mel scream no, as she see a little girl in front of the train. She run out of the car looking for the girl and see her ruining into the building and everyone else run after year and are stopped by older man telling them to leave this place. The next day she goes to the same place and leaves the car neutral and then car moves, then she see little girl again, and drop her off to her house. Then she drives off. Then again next day she goes to see owner of the house where she dropped the little girl off., but she find that girl doesn't live there anymore. So she goes back to train tracks again, walk into the old building find a pieces of paper and she run out of place as someone is watching her, then she run into her Asshole friends boyfriends who tired to raped her but gets away and leaving paper with him, Later that night, That guy is on date with a cheerleader in his car, and then someone is standing right out side car door and then both are killed in some very good deaths scenes, (Gory and fun at the time).Mel as been seeing things all day, In gym class she doing the roping climbing thing, as she get near to top she see blood on roof and saying help me, then she falls on to the mat.She tells the headmaster everything; even show him the paper she found Headmaster, tell her to forget everything and keeps the paper and she told that every one of those kids had street named after them, and even they had to be changed. Later that night, she get home to see that headmaster is telling her mum what she told him, crazy mum cut a piece of her hair, so she run to her, room. And then She see ghost of girl and telling her to help again on mirror in her room, she break out of the room. Mean while head master is at train track and find out that Mel was telling him the truth, later that night, headmaster is killed.I don't what to ruin the ending for you but I would say I was not disappointed how story came to a end.I loved this movie it is had supernatural, which was some very creepy scene in this movie and half way into in turns into Slasher movie which has some really good death scene and keeping the supernatural until end of movie too Acting from everyone is great and the Girl you played Mel did great job.And finally the only thing I didn't like about this movie was the last ten seconds of movies was so pointless, but the rest of the movie is fantastic.I give this movie 9/10

had potential but plot holes kind of sink it

posted on 19 Dec 2007

"Fingerprints" isn't terrible, and it does have some genuinely spooky moments, but it also has plot holes big enough to drive a train though (or a bus, perhaps). The premise is that 40 years ago, a bus full of school kids were hit by a train, due to a malfunctioning crossing signal, and all died. Now, in the present, there's a urban legend that if you go to this spot, put your car in neutral and wait, little hands will push your car to safety across the tracks. Now, in this town are some new residents, a family that has apparently just moved there from California, with two teenage daughters, Crystal & Melanie. It seems that Melanie has just gotten out of rehab, after overdosing on heroin with her boyfriend, who died. So the parents (especially the psycho-bitch mom) are a bit freaked out that Mel will just drift right back to what she was doing. Of course, as soon as Mel settles in, Crystal takes her to a party where lots of drugs and alcohol are present, and they end up in a car with the local bad-boy, who takes them to the tracks to do the "urban legend" thing. They wait till a train is coming too, and just before it gets there, Mel sees a young girl standing on the tracks. Mel will see a lot of this young girl in the days to come, and perhaps she has the ability to see ghosts because of having died and been brought back to life after overdosing. But she doesn't yet know that Julie is a ghost. She does find though, that Julie has a sister, now an old woman, who lives in town, and upon visiting her, a strange remark is made about the bus crash that supposedly happened...like, there never was one? So now Melanie is looking back at old newspapers for signs of a cover-up. And it seems like there was one, and that perhaps the ghost of Julie's father, the train station conductor, is now stalking teens in this town. And here is where this film begins to unravel into utter nonsense. The film takes a while to start getting to the good stuff, and when it gets there it's interesting, but then it becomes sketchy and begins to fall apart and doesn't make much sense. And therefore it becomes merely average, just another half-assed spook show for teens. I'm sure some will like this more than others but I was greatly disappointed. 5 out of 10.

Thumbs up!

I was able to catch a screening Fingerprints at Texas Frightmare Weekend and I give this movie a big thumbs up! It was nice to see an original horror movie that is NOT A REMAKE! Based on the urban legend surrounding haunted train tracks in Texas, Fingerprints was an awesome supernatural thriller with elements of slasher movies that I found to be a good mix of ghosts and gore. The lead actress in this film was extremely engaging and her acting was top notch. At one point I thought I knew where the movie was going, but I was pleasantly surprised by the good old fashioned twist at the end. I would recommend Fingerprints to anyone who is looking for a fun, horror/thriller.

These fingerprints leave an inferior mark!

posted on 01 Nov 2007

I've been reading about Brian Cleveland's "Fingerprints" ever since late 2005, but due to continuous release push-backs, I hadn't had the opportunity to actually check it out. That is, until now. The movie has just come to a close, and I'm sad to say, the flick didn't exactly impress. I mean, it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't good either. Which is a little unfortunate because... I was feeling very optimistic about this little horror/mystery movie.Straight out of rehab, Melanie (Leah Pipes) moves back home with her parents and sister, Crystal (played by "Laguna Beach" star Kristin Cavallari), and soon finds herself caught up in an old tragedy that plagues the town. As the story goes, back in 1957, there was a horrible accident between a school bus and a train, due to a problem in a railroad crossing gate, which resulted in death. Now, in the present day, there is an urban legend that if you put your car in neutral at the same spot the disaster took place, the ghosts of the dead school children will push the car and their fingerprints will be printed on the car bumper. The legend is actually quite refreshing for the horror genre, and it was presented well, but more than a quarter way into the film, the plot suddenly splits, and instead we get a double dose; with the outcome creating conflict. Not only is "Fingerprints" a supernatural tale, but it's also a slasher movie. Whilst the spooky happenings are going on, there is also a masked killer on the loose. This is where I lost interest. The film starts to lose its grip on the story, and it eventually becomes a sloppy "free for all," which then presents major plot holes. It's as though they had two ideas, and instead of deciding on one, they just included both. Which, in my opinion, didn't work. The flick started off well, better than I expected, but as the minutes went on, it started to frazzle. The acting was... good, for the most part. Leah Pipes did a good job with her portrayal, albeit a little overacted at times, but she held her own throughout. Kristin Cavallari, reality-TV star turned actress, impressed me for the first half of the movie; her acting seemed genuine and she was rather charismatic on screen. But I couldn't help but notice when the flick started to dive into its "serious territory," it was becoming more and more apparent that this wasn't her forte. But, you know, this was her first movie, so i'll cut her a break. Andrew Lawrence (Mitch) did a great job at portraying the typical "class clown/hooligan." It's ironic: his character was a total pig, yet there's something very engaging about the actor that makes you warm to him. The rest of the cast, Josh Henderson (Penn), Lou Diamond Phillips (Doug) and Geoffrey Lewis (Keeler), all did a decent job with their parts. However, Melanie's mother, Bethany (Ginger Gilmartin), handed in a lackluster performance. Almost robotic. The special effects were surprisingly effective for a low budget horror movie; job well done on that specific aspect. In conclusion, "Fingerprints" is one of those sub-par horror movies that you stumble upon at 3am whilst browsing through late night television. Only with this one you are most likely to stick around for the final act. It's a time waster; and that goes both ways.

Worth a look for fans wanting something new.

A young girl recently released from a drug rehab clinic, moves in with her sister & parents & soon becomes obsessed with the story of a group of children killed in a school bus accident near some train tracks. As the legend goes, the kids will push your car across the tracks if you park in front of them. The small town is still haunted by the incident which happened well over forty years ago, but as the girl digs further, she discovers some shocking truths covered up about the story & soon a diabolical killer starts to murder the towns teen citizenry. FINGER PRINTS is an interesting but ultimately confused story that can't decide exactly what it is, is it a ghost story? a mystery? a slasher film? a suspense film? by the time the film finishes you may not know either. The story is decently told however & the acting is strong for the is type of film, while the direction manages to keep on track as well. The film has a few suspenseful moments & some neat plot twists, but leaves several questions unanswered & although it's ending is suspenseful, it also finishes with a limp & unsatisfying conclusion. All in all not the greatest horror film out there, but it is a cut above more recent horror outings & at least tries to give us something new for a change rather than the dull SAW/Texas Chainsaw Massacre rip-offs we've been dealing with lately.*** stars
