Filmic dream, CG nightmare

posted on 26 Aug 2009

Much about this film was fantastic. Russell Crowe gives an excellent performance, which I've come to expect. Ridley Scott gives us something different, as I've come to expect --few of his films seem similar to one another. The cinematography and lighting is gorgeous, although I havesome technical beefs with the DP (please, filmmakers, don't overuse filters--it's a little cheesy). The story is quite something; a historical epic with a good deal to say about modern culture and society (Proximo: "I'm an entertainer." Maximus: "Are you not amused?"). However, I have a big problem with CG (computer-generated imagery). No matter how sophisticated, it always looks strange, and never looks real. Its use is better and more restrained here than, for example, in Star Wars: Episode One (a ridiculous waste of millions of dollars in technology), but here it's still oppressive. I think of all the people who must have put in months of their time making little tiny CG Romans walk around a big CG Colosseum, and I wonder what might have been a better use of their time... Oh well, I suppose I should get used to the CG trend, it seems to be here to stay.

A Must See Film

Its a good thing "Saving Private Ryan and Gladiator", were not out in the same year, I think it would have been a first time duel for Best Picture.I did enjoy this film greatly, but I had trouble with the basic plot, that is, the suppose killing of Maximus. His men were very loyal to him, and his right hand man "Quintas" was not in the Pretorian Guard,(who protects the Emperor), so for him to turn against Maximus is just not believable, during the Roman empire in the years A.D. it was the army who plotted against the Emperors and in many cases put their Generals as emperors.Be that as it may,its a story of the destiny of men "when death smiles at you, all you can do is smile back", as we will all dead, its the when and the how. This is also the third film that had this special type editing, I don't know what to call it, but its like a slow motion, speeded up editing process that's quite unique. This movie has a message here and its all to real

What we do today affects eternity!

I have always loved movies that deal with ideals like love, hate and revenge. This movie has all three. Russell Crows does a great job playing the slave that gets revenge and frees his men. As my boyfriend said as we were watching the movie- life is fight or die. Rome its rise and fall have always fascinated me. This movie embodies both the good and bad about the Roman empire. As a whole the move held my attention. The stunts were great and the music too. I am glad that I rented it. I plan to watch it several more times.

Excellent......

Great Film ! It not only has a strong story, but all the necessary elements to be a blockbuster. Very good direction, beautiful music and good cast. Russell Crowe, as always, is excellent, and proves again his talent as an actor.

Worst "Best Picture Oscar" since "The Last Emporer"

This movie is just such a mess, that last year must have been a worse year for movies than I'd realized. That said, Traffic is head and shoulders in quality beyond this silly toga movie. There are little scenes in this movie that do not relate to ANYTHING - most notably, the scene near the end where someone puts a poisonous snake in a bed. The viewers are lead to believe that a certain traitor was being killed; the set-up about Cleopatra had been made in the previous scene. But nothing happens - the character is clearly alive later. The scenes involving war crib from the best - Rashoman and Henry V, with music stolen from Holsts' The Planets. The gladiator scenes steal from Spartacus (with more gore, of course; Spartacus, made over 40 years ago, is a vastly superior movie despite Tony Curtis' problems with acting). The Collesium scenes use many shots from Ben Hur.The performances are all over the place. Richard Harris and Oliver Reed (whose ruminations on death in the movie are all the more eerie since he died during the filming) are terrific. Russell Crowe is pretty good, but not great. His best scenes are during his general days early in the movie. But Juanquin Phoenix and, to a degree, Connie Nielsen feel like they are in a completely different movie. Some of the photography and most of the CGI work (except when they attempted to animate a tiger) is quite good. The animated tigers intercut with real tigers showed the CGI isn't perfect because the perspective is extremely flat when the animated tigers are used. This movie is an ambitious disappointment. It is very much like Ben Hur in that it has flashes of brilliance but is undercut by a surprisingly awkward script. On the whole, I'll take Ben Hur and Spartacus for great cinema about Rome.

Great ...but

Would have been a great film without the end.Once more Hollywood mistake, they can't figure out the end without a spectacle..a caesar fighting a gladiator in the arena!! Give me a break..Do they read History in hollywood?? 3 stars

GOOD MOVIE BUT BAD CHOICE WITH RUSSELL CROWE

posted on 12 Aug 2009

This may be a an outstanding epic but the choice of Russel Crowe for the lead roll was a pathetic choice. Russell Crowe is only capable of his two usual arrogant and stupid expressions and how this constitutes acting beats me.Readers may be interested to know that Mr Crowe is a rich kid not from the down side of priviledge, as he claimed in his Oscar speech.A gladiator would be expected to be rather muscular in stature and Russel crowe is an unfit and flabby old boy.Anyone who considers him to be an actor of more than pathetic ability is a conned hollywood stardom desperate. It is obvious that the film industry is capable of marketing any crap to iconic status.

One of the year's best; a startling experience. **** out of ****

GLADIATOR / (2000) ****Ridley Scott is an master at manufacturing highly visual motion pictures with energetic, luminous stories. "Blade Runner" and "Alien" dazzled us with high tech action and suspense. Now the roman epic "Gladiator" vividly captures the time period and atmosphere in which its characters inhabit. This is an excellent looking production, one of the year's best. The movie is a visual tour-de-France; beautiful scenery, awe-inducing sets, convincing cinematography, and believable costume designs bring the ancient Roman Empire to life on screen. The story, set in 180 A.D., details the bitter life of the highly proclaimed General Maximus (Russell Crowe). We first meet him as he reigns a bloody victory after combating a slew of savage barbarians. Dying roman emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris), greatly respects his favored warrior, and even chooses he, over his conniving son Commodus, (Joaquin Phoenix), to rule the dynasty after his passing. The emperor wishes for Maximus to restore the republican government to Rome. When Commodus perceives his father's intents, he is furious. Before Aurelius is able to explain his final demands to anyone, his own son murders him as well as Maximus' precious family, and orders his father's favorite to death. Maximus is underestimated, however, and escapes his condemnation, only to be captured soon afterward and sold into a slave camp led by the greedy Proximo (Oliver Reed). There, he and several other hopefuls, including Gracchus (Derek Jacobi) and Juba (Djimon Hounsou), are trained as gladiators, brutal and dehumanized warriors who fight one another to the death to amuse a live audience."Gladiator" contains a descriptive and clear first act. The set up and introduction defines the situations, characters, and motives respectfully. The character development is unordinary although extraordinarily effective; Maximus and Commodus are explained as the story progresses. The audience discovers more about them as the movie intertwines with perplexity. This method of character expansion devises depth and involvement within Maximus, Proximo, and Commodus and his good-hearted relative, Lucilla (Connie Nielsen). Russell Crowe ("LA Confidential") undoubtedly will be further recognized as a sensational actor after his appearance as the gladiator. This determined actor conquers his role with complexity and optimal intensity. His performance is more solid than his in the Oscar nominated "The Insider." Joaquin Phoenix ("Clay Pigeons," "8MM") is diabolical and mischievously believable. Connie Nielsen ("Soldier") also shimmers in her timid but decisive performance. The confrontation scenes between Commodus and Maximus are hypnotic. The movie grants profound power when the two arch enemies discover each other's identity for the first time. "Gladiator" portrays its riveting characters with style and penetration; I really cared about the compelling figures in this movie.I did find a few trifling external problems within this otherwise flawless production. The film's combat sequences are high impact, intensely believable and some of the most involving moments in movies this year. However, the camera work often deprives us from indulging in the shear graphic qualities of warfare. Sometimes the scenes are too sketchy and brief, unlike the fighting in "Braveheart" and "Saving Private Ryan."In a time of the year when high-brow movies are rare, "Gladiator" offers clever writing, smart dialogue, involving characters, and perfect timing. This film is a feast for the senses, an overwhelming jolt of energy, a touching journey into the past. "Gladiator" is not merely a movie, but it is an experience.

Gladiator - The next generation of films

posted on 08 Aug 2009

This film will leave you stunned - It has an epic story-line, it has some really gruesome violence during the gladiator scenes (how can it really be classed as a 15?)and the portrayal of the characters, especially Caesar Commodus (he really does make your flesh crawl!)...It's akin to The Matrix and Phantom Menace because it uses massive amounts computer graphics to show the audience things that are impossible to recreate in real life. If Oliver Reed really was dead part way through filming, and his face really was digitally recreated, actors better beware, because it's impossible to know which bits are real Ollie Reed and which bits aren't.Hail Gladiator!

"Gladiator" is a truly outstanding movie. It works on so many levels.Great direction by Ridley Scott, memorable characters and some of the most breath-taking fight scenes ever filmed. This film is surely one of the best movies of the 90's.What can I say more?Go to the nearest cinema, rent it or buy it,because you should watch this modern masterpiece. This violent tale about honor and strength is truly without flaws. Now I am waiting for Ridley Scott's adaptation of the "Hannibal".By the way,one of the Maximus horses is named Argento. How funny?

Looking Back...

I just watched "Gladiator" the other day, and to be honest, it's not as great as I remember. Sure the fight scenes are great, but at some points it becomes boring and uninteresting. The acting is okay, except I found Joaquin Phoenix to get a bit annoying. It's not quite on the same level as "Braveheart". Watch that one instead. 6/10

A pretty good flick, but with some glaring errors :(

posted on 04 Aug 2009

Ok, I saw Gladiator last night, and on the whole I was impressed. The acting was good and there were some interesting in-jokes. However, historically it left much to be desired.First, the good parts: Marcus Aurelius' Meditations reveal that he did not much care for the public life, and longed to return to his quiet life on the farm back in the country. Sound familiar? Also, there had been a revolt by a senator named Cassius shortly before Aurelius' death, and he shows up in the movie, yay! I also liked the fight scenes, yes that makes me no better than the mob, but I thought it was interesting how the actual killings tended to be displayed either sped up or slowed down, in either case making them seem unreal. In regard to the mish-mash of accents, I thought it added charm to the movie, after all, Rome was a mish-mash of people, no?** There are some spoilers in the following section. You have been warned **As far as the history goes, I have heard some complaints from friends about Aurelius actually being in Germania (he did go out on the road with his armies) and Commodus entering the gladiatorial ring (which he also did). My major issue is the fact that Commodus enjoyed(?) a 12 year reign! He was not, repeat not, killed in the Coliseum by anyone, he was drugged and murdered the night before he was to accept a consulship. (Dressed as a gladiator, no less) For me, that brought this movie down a couple notches. Historical license is one thing, but killing emporers less than 6 months into their reign is too much for me.Final analysis: 6/10

Maximum Battles

Although I wouldn't say this is a "good" movie or even a "classic" like the muddled brain dead teens who claim it is the best piece of cinema in the world, I would call it entertaining and nothing more. The film was created to make money, not to stimulate our intellect and I understand that and in the end I said to myself, i could see this again, only for the ability of Crowe to convey to us the power of loss and imprisonment and especially for the stunning battles sequences that are exciting. The plot is unbelievable, and the special effects even worse and even the editing is loose and discordant but again, Crowe's presence and the fights are terrific so don't go to the theater thinking this is Spartacus.

Maybe it's the genre, but this movie was awful

posted on 27 Jul 2009

I thought the film was atrocious. Part of this was the mobmentality that pervaded the college theatre where I saw it, withhordes of frat boys cheering and applauding at the goriestscenes. Do they not realize they are just like the Romans inthis sense? I couldn't believe some of the dialogue that wasallowed to come out of characters' mouths. Some of the specialeffects were interesting, particularly the construction of theColiseum, but the sped-up look of the scenes was extremelyirritating. This film just seemed thoughtless and predictable, while not particularly entertaining or insightful. Definitelynot worth 2 1/2 hours or $8 for the price of ad

The Best !

Before I went to see Gladiator, I expected a trash popcorn movie with lots of special effects - but the film gave me a complete SHOCK !! This is surely the best film I've ever seen (it even overtakes my previous favourite, L.A. Confidential) !!Firstly, the scene : it's breathtaking, absolutely beautiful . The dark and shady forests of Germany, the greatness of Rome, etc. It's so lifelike, that you can feel the ancient air !Secondly, the actors : Russell Crowe is surely the best male actor of our time ! He proved it before in L.A. Confidential and The Insider, but this is even better . He's so real, that it's even scaring ! He became Maximus, that's for sure . But that's not all : Joaquin Phoenix is a disgusting, sadist animal (perfect), Connie Nielsen is elegant and majestic and poor Oliver Reed gave his best performance as Proximo .Despite all these things, you could say it's not enough - some say the movie's plot is too simple and that the conversations are dull and dumb . Well, they are surely not the wackiest and newest sentences, but what did you expect to hear - Shakespeare ?! The plot (I think) is just enough good for an action-drama like this . It's simple, you don't have to think about it for hours !And I've left the best thing for the last time : the movie has a great moral, which is nearly inimitable . Gladiator's power is striking through, the story is shocking and beautiful .I had a great time during watching (3 times) the film (I gave it 10 stars) and I can only recommend it to everybody ! It's a "MUST SEE" !!

This film was marvellous. It's high time we had some more epics of this type, and though quite a task to take on, this has succeeded beyond all expectations. It also proves beyond a doubt that films of this genre are never going to become 'unfashionable'.Though I've seen LA Confidential, I'm not actually overly familiar with Russell Crowe's work, but I have to say that from this point onwards, I'm going to look out for anything that he's in with interest.I'd give this film a strong 9 out of 10. The only complaint (and this isn't going to be a spoiler!!) is that I left with the feeling that they'd perhaps edited it rather harshly for whatever reason, and that we as the audience had maybe missed out in order to keep the length down, though maybe I'm wrong.....

Crowe was superb; Joaquin Phoenix deserved an Oscar - Contains Spoiler

posted on 25 Jul 2009

Russell Crowe was PERFECT for the role of Maximus, and he created a character so memorable and life-like that it actually makes me sad when I think of Maximus and remember that he died after his struggle. No. I'm not delusional, and I'm not a tough-guy wannabe, but I have to admit that the character reached me. Joaquin Phoenix was SO good, and the role was such a departure for him, yet he played it flawlessly. He deserved the Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting role. He brought Commodus to life as Crowe did Maximus. This is definetly one of my all time favorite movies. My only complaint: the fight scenes were choreographed too fast. At times it seemed like 3 people were dead with one swing of Maximus' sword. The movie had a cast member from "Braveheart" (Tommy Flanagan, a.k.a Cicero). He should have given the director some input on how more realistic the battle scenes in "Braveheart" were; the action could be seen in more detail. But, I still give "Gladiator" 9.9 out of 10. It's tough to beat.

Better than Braveheart

This is the movie that will make Russell Crowe a major star! The cinematography is wonderful, and Russell Crowe is just outstanding as Maximus. Although the film drags just a tiny bit after the intial opening scenes, the ending makes up for it completely. If you liked Braveheart, you will LOVE Gladiator.

Simply Amazing!!

Gladiator is quite simply one of the best movies ever made, and it deserved each of the 5 Academy Awards that it won. The story is brilliant, the acting is outstanding, and the soundtrack is perfect. All of the acting performances are outstanding, but the most memorable performance is that of Russell Crowe. His performance here put him at the top of the Hollywood A-list, and he deserved the Best Actor award. He is riveting as Maximus, the Roman General who was betrayed. He was forced to become a slave, and then a gladiator. Some of the most memorable quotes come from the character of Maximus, such as 'My name is Gladiator'.Another outstanding performance is that of Connie Nielsen as Lucilla. The action scenes are well done, and extremely bloody, but this makes them more authentic. If you haven't seen this movie yet, you are missing out on one of the best movies ever made.Definately 10/10!
